WELL, JUST BRIEFLY THIS EVENING, I HAD THE CHANCE TO DO MY FIRST SCHOOL VISIT OF THE YEAR TODAY AT BEVERLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

AND IT WAS JUST WONDERFUL TO GET OUT AND WATCH THE STUDENTS AND THE TEACHERS IN ACTION.

IN PARTICULAR TODAY I GOT TO OBSERVE A LOT OF THE 95% PHONICS CURRICULUM WORKING ON THE, I SOUND, AND SO THAT WAS TERRIFIC IN THE CLOSED SYLLABLE.

SO LEARNED A LOT ABOUT THAT AND HAD A GREAT TIME THERE.

ALSO ALONGSIDE THE SCHOOL SUPERVISORS, DOCTOR SCHWAB AND DOCTOR JOUNG, I'M DOING DATA CHATS WITH OUR PRINCIPALS.

AND SO WE BEGAN THOSE TODAY AS WELL.

AND WE ALSO HAVE ALSO HAD JASON AILLAUD AND JON BELL, OUR TWO EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS OF STUDENT LEARNING AND STUDENT SERVICES, ALONGSIDE US, SO THAT WE CAN REALLY TALK WITH THE PRINCIPALS ABOUT THEIR DATA, PARTICULARLY GRADUATION AND SBA, DEPENDING ON THE LEVEL AND WHAT WE CAN DO TO SUPPORT THEM AS WE'RE ALL WORKING TOGETHER TO IMPROVE STUDENT OUTCOMES.

INDEED, TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT OF THE YEAR THAT WE BEGIN REALLY INFUSING STUDENT VOICE BACK INTO OUR MEETINGS ALONG WITH OUR STUDENT ADVISORS.

WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A PRESENTATION THIS EVENING, OUR FIRST OF THE YEAR FROM SHERWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

AND WE'RE GOING TO BEGIN WITH OUR STUDENTS FROM SHERWOOD.

AND WE HAVE ALL BEEN AT SHERWOOD SINCE KINDERGARTEN.

DO YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT A DATA CHAT IS.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS FOR ME.

I MET MY TEACHER AND TALKED ABOUT I-READY SCORES LIKE WHAT GRADE LEVEL I'M PERFORMING AT AND HOW I DID.

IF YOU LOOK ON THE SCREEN, YOU'LL SEE MY DATA CHAT PAPERS.

THIS IS WHAT I DID.

FIRST, I TRACKED MY READINGS.

FIRST, I TRACKED MY READING SCORE AND DETERMINED WHAT I WAS GOOD AT AND WHAT I NEEDED TO WORK ON, THEN SET GOALS FOR WHAT I WANT TO DO OR HOW FAR I WANT TO GET BY THE END OF THE YEAR. MY GOAL MAY NOT BE SOMETHING MY TEACHER SET FOR ME.

IT COULD BE SOMETHING THAT I CAME UP WITH ON MY OWN AND THOUGHT IT MIGHT HELP ME IMPROVE MY I-READY SCORES AND HELP THEM GO UP.

SO I DECIDED TO FOCUS ON VOCABULARY AND I CREATED MY PLAN.

DO YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT INFORMATION WE USE IN OUR DATA CHATS? WE USE THE IRA DIAGNOSTICS FOR READING AND MATH.

I LOOKED AT THE RESULTS TOGETHER FOR READING MATH WITH MY TEACHER.

BUT FOR NOW, WE WILL FOCUS ON READING.

MY TEACHER AND I SET A GOAL FOR EACH AREA.

WE DETERMINE THE GOAL BY LOOKING AT WHERE I CURRENTLY SCORED AND DECIDED WHAT AREA TO FOCUS ON.

FOR EXAMPLE, I SAID I WAS REALLY CLOSE TO FINISHING THE VOCABULARY AREA AND MY TEACHERS CALL IT DOMAIN, AND I ASKED IF MY TEACHER COULD SHUT DOWN THE OTHER DOMAINS SO THAT I CAN IMPROVE AND JUST FOCUS ON JUST THAT SKILL.

ONCE I FINISHED THE LESSON IN THAT AREA, IT FELT GOOD THAT MY HARD WORK WAS PAYING OFF.

IT FELT GOOD WHEN I GOT QUESTIONS RIGHT AND MY TEACHER HELPED ME ALONG THE WAY.

I COULD SEE THE RESULTS IN THE NEXT DIAGNOSTIC.

WHEN I WAS SETTING MY GOAL, I KNEW.

WHEN I WAS SETTING WHERE AM I? I USED THE BAR GRAPH TO SAY WHERE I WAS AND HOW MANY POINTS I NEEDED TO REACH MY GROWTH GOAL OR MY STRETCH GOAL.

MY TEACHER WAS SUPPORTIVE OF WHAT I ACCOMPLISHED AND IT MADE ME FEEL GOOD.

YOU CAN SEE MY EXAMPLE ON THE SCREEN.

DATA CHATS HAPPENED IN MANY CLASSES AND THE I-READY SUCCESS WAS SHARED THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL.

ACTUALLY WE TALKED ABOUT SETTING GOALS IN OUR CLASS AND OUR TEACHER AND OUR CCC COMMUNITY [INAUDIBLE].

SORRY.

[LAUGHTER] GROUP OF STUDENTS WHO REPRESENT THE SCHOOL AS A GROUP.

WATCHING THEIR PROGRESS.

WHERE AM I? OH.

AS A GROUP. WALK AWAY, WALK AWAY.

AS WE IMPROVED OUR COMMUNITY CONNECTION COUNCIL, A GROUP OF STUDENTS WHO REPRESENT THE SCHOOL AS A GROUP, WE TALKED AND HELPED MAKE DECISIONS ABOUT HOW WE CAN GET STUDENTS TO WANT TO DO THE I-READY AND GET EXCITED ABOUT WATCHING THEIR PROGRESS.

AS WE IMPROVED, OUR CLASS GOT [INAUDIBLE] AN I-READY CHARACTER AS THE STUDENTS GOT EXCITED ABOUT WATCHING OVER THE CHARACTERS.

AS WE DID OUR LESSONS, THE CHARACTERS ROTATED AROUND THE ROOM, THE CLASS, AND THE CLASSROOM AS EACH PERSON DID THEIR LESSONS, THE PERSON IN THE CLASS WHO HAD THE MOST MINUTES GOT TO KEEP THE STUFFIE ON THEIR DESK.

ALSO, MRS. SALTZMAN MADE ANNOUNCEMENTS THAT CELEBRATED THE CLASSES, THE CLASSES THAT IMPROVED THE MOST BY GETTING THEIR MINUTES AND THEIR LESSONS.

THEN THE LITTLE KIDS REALLY LOVED IT AND MOTIVATED THE KIDS TO WANT TO GET THE STUFFIE WANT TO BE ON THE ANNOUNCEMENTS AND LISTEN TO THE ANNOUNCEMENTS.

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, IT GOT KIDS TO WANT TO DO THEIR I-READY.

WE MOVE INTO DIFFERENT GROUPS AREAS QUICKLY AND I GOT USED TO IT FAST.

WE SOMETIMES ARE CHALLENGED.

LEARNING IS FUN AND EXCITING.

WE ROTATE GROUPS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

WE EVEN GET TO CELEBRATE.

SOMETIMES STUDENTS READ BOOKS.

SOME WORK ON SOUNDS AND WORDS, SOME STUDENTS WORK ON VOCABULARY, AND SOME DO BATTLE OF THE BOOKS.

THERE ARE EVEN PHONICS STARS.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE GROUPS IS DOING FLUENCY WITH OUR TEACHER AND READER'S THEATER.

WE CAN BE READING CHAPTER BOOKS AND LITERACY CIRCLES.

SOMETIMES WE PLAY GAMES AROUND THE SKILL WE ARE WORKING ON.

AND WHAT YOU'RE DOING IN YOUR SCHOOL IS, IS SPECIAL.

AND HOPEFULLY THIS KIND OF SAME THING IS GOING TO BE HAPPENING IN ALL SCHOOLS ACROSS OUR DISTRICT.

SO MY QUESTION FIRST QUESTION IS TO ANY OF YOU, HOW DIFFERENT IS THIS YEAR AS OPPOSED TO LAST YEAR OR THE YEAR BEFORE THAT? YOU WANT TO ANSWER? MAYBE LIKE DIFFERENT CLASSROOMS? NOT REALLY THE DIFFERENCE.

I DON'T REALLY CARE. I THINK THAT WE ARE MORE ORGANIZED THAN WE WERE.

WHENEVER I PICK UP A BOOK THAT I LIKE, IT'S A LOT EASIER TO READ THAN A BOOK THAT, LIKE MY TEACHER, MAY PICK THAT I DON'T LIKE VERY MUCH.

BASICALLY, OUR SECOND GRADERS, THEY WERE SECOND GRADE LAST YEAR AND THEY SAW A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF GROWTH IN THEIR SECOND GRADE.

SO OUR PLAN IS TO NOW TAKE THAT TO FIRST GRADE AND TO THIRD GRADE.

SO NOW THAT THEY'RE THIRD GRADERS, THEY KNOW THE ROUTINE OF THINGS, THEY'RE GOING TO PASS THAT ON TO THE OTHER TO THIRD GRADE.

SO THEY'RE GOING TO BE WORKING ON COMPREHENSION OF HIGHER LEVEL TEXTS AND BEING ABLE TO DO LITERACY CIRCLES AND DOING HIGHER LEVEL THINKING AROUND COMPREHENSION, BECAUSE NOW THEY'VE MASTERED THAT.

AND THEN ON THE FLIP SIDE, WE'RE GOING TO GO DOWN TO FIRST GRADE TO MAKE SURE THAT THOSE PHONICS GROUPS ARE HAPPENING.

LAP IS HAPPENING. ALL OF THE SKILLS THAT THE KIDS NEED IN ORDER TO GET TO THE POINT WHERE THEY'RE REALLY COMPREHENDING AND FLUID WITH THEIR READING.

SO HAVING THE SECOND GRADERS SHARE WITH YOU THEIR INFORMATION ABOUT WIN TIME AND WHAT I NEED HAS BEEN REALLY EFFECTIVE.

AND I KNOW THAT AS A SAMPLE, THEY ARE NOW GOING TO SPREAD THAT SECOND GRADE LOVE TO THE OTHER GRADE LEVELS SO THAT THEY'LL BE ABLE TO HAVE THAT EXPERIENCE AS WELL.

THE CONTEXT OF MY POINTS WERE ACTUALLY SOMEWHAT APROPOS, WITH THE GOALS THAT THE STUDENTS FROM SHERWOOD ELEMENTARY MADE TONIGHT, WHICH IS HEARTENING TO SEE THAT STUDENTS ARE THINKING ABOUT THESE KIND OF THINGS.

I WOULD LIKE TO ASK THE BOARD TO MAYBE CONSIDER MORE DISCUSSION ABOUT THE GOALS THAT YOU GUYS SET EVERY SPRING.

IT SEEMS TO RECALL.

YET THEY DON'T SEEM TO BE FOCUSED UPON MUCH AS YOU GO THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AND EXACTLY HOW YOU ARE IMPLEMENTING THESE GOALS, AND WORKING TO HAVE THEM CARRIED OUT IN A PRACTICAL WAY.

FROM THE VANTAGE POINT OF AN OUTSIDE CITIZEN WE FEEL THAT THESE ASPECTS NEED TO BE COVERED IN A MORE FOCUSED FASHION.

AND I THINK REALLY READING, WRITING, ARITHMETIC AND THE CONTEXT IS THE LOW GRADE LEVEL THAT WE HAVE WITH THE STATE TEST SCORES.

AND I KNOW WE CAN ALL ARGUE ABOUT THE LEGITIMACY OF THESE TEST SCORES AND WONDER IF THEY ARE TOTALLY ACCURATE OF WHAT'S GOING ON.

YET WE AS A SOCIETY ARE FALLING BEHIND IN SO MANY AREAS, AND I LOOK AROUND AND SEE WHAT'S GOING ON, WHETHER IT BE IN OUR CITIES OR WHETHER IT BE IN HOW THESE KIDS ARE FOCUSED IN THE CLASSROOM, WHETHER IT BE WITH IPADS OR WHATEVER, THE PADS THAT YOU GET, CHROME PADS YOU GUYS ARE USING.

IS THIS A DISTRACTION FOR THESE KIDS THAT THAT CAUSES THEM NOT TO BE AS FOCUSED UPON THE ASPECTS OF READING, WRITING, AND ARITHMETIC THAT I THINK IS SUCH A CRITICAL ASPECT.

WE KNOW OF A STUDENT THAT HAS LEFT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND GONE TO A PRIVATE SCHOOL, AND SHE HAS SPELLING TESTS EVERY YEAR, EVERY WEEK AND I HEARD THAT SHE WASN'T GETTING THAT HERE AT THIS SCHOOL, SHE HAS LEARNED TO WRITE CURSIVE, AND THE IDEA THAT SOMEHOW CURSIVE IS OUTMODED TODAY, IN TODAY'S SOCIETY.

I'D LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT CURSIVE IS SOMETHING THAT IS VERY LEGITIMATE.

AND THE ABILITY, I BET MOST OF YOU UP THERE ARE WRITING IN CURSIVE ON NOTES THAT YOU'RE YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT RIGHT NOW.

SO I WOULD HOPE THAT THE DISTRICT WOULD PERHAPS WORK TO IMPLEMENT SOME OF THE YOU KNOW, SPELLING TESTS AGAIN AND PERHAPS HAVING CURSIVE AS A PRIORITY. ALSO, I WONDER A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MATHEMATICS.

I DON'T KNOW, IT'D BE INTERESTING TO HEAR WHAT PROPORTION OF THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS MOVE INTO TRIGONOMETRY AND ANALYTIC GEOMETRY, AND SOME OF THE HIGHER LEVELS OF MATH WHO TAKES SECOND ALGEBRA TWO AND THINGS LIKE THIS? THOSE ARE IMPORTANT.

IF KIDS WANT TO MOVE INTO A FIELD THAT WOULD UTILIZE THESE TOOLS AS THEY MOVE FORWARD IN, WHETHER THEY GO TO COLLEGE OR A COMMUNITY COLLEGE OR HOWEVER THEY WORK.

MATH IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT ASPECT IN TODAY, AND I WOULD HOPE THAT THE DISTRICT MIGHT FOCUS A LITTLE BIT MORE ON THESE ASPECTS.

SO THAT'S JUST A POINT I'D LIKE TO MAKE.

AND IT SEEMS TO BE APPROPRIATE IN CONTEXT OF WHAT THE STUDENTS WERE DOING TODAY.

FOR THOSE WHO ARE UNAWARE OF WHAT THE RECORDS INDEX IS, IT IS EXPLAINED IN RCW 42.56.070.

BASICALLY, IT'S A COMPILATION OF POLICIES, CURRICULUM STUDIES AND REPORTS, ETC.

ACCORDING TO THE RCW, IT SHOULD BE MADE AVAILABLE FOR THE PUBLIC INSPECTION DURING REGULAR BUSINESS HOURS.

HOWEVER, NOT ONE DISTRICT EMPLOYEE EVEN KNEW WHAT THE RECORDS INDEX WAS, ALL WHILE THE PUBLIC RECORDS OFFICER WAS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. WE ARE SURE THAT THE DISTRICT IS AWARE THAT THIS GENTLEMAN UPLOADED THIS REPORT TO YOUTUBE, AND THE VIDEO NOW HAS OVER 69,000 VIEWS. UNFORTUNATELY FOR THE DISTRICT, THIS REPORT HIGHLIGHTS THE DISTRICT'S LACK OF TRANSPARENCY AND WILLINGNESS TO PROVIDE THE PUBLIC

INFORMATION THEY NEED TO MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS, AND EDUCATED OPINIONS ABOUT HOW THE DISTRICT IS SERVING THE PUBLIC.

THE ONLY REASON THIS JOURNALIST VISITED THE DISTRICT WAS BECAUSE HE RECEIVED TIPS FROM AN ELDERLY RESIDENT, STATING THAT HE SUSPECTED THE DISTRICT WAS NOT PROVIDING HIM ALL THE INFORMATION THAT HE REQUESTED REGARDING CURRICULUM USED IN THE SCHOOLS.

SO WITHOUT A RECORDS INDEX, HOW ARE THE PEOPLE ABLE TO VERIFY IF THEY RECEIVED THE INFORMATION THAT THEY REQUESTED FROM THE DISTRICT? WHEN ASKED ABOUT THIS INTERACTION AND AFTER REVIEWING THE DISTRICT RESOLUTION NUMBER 09/52 FROM 2009, WHICH THEY CLAIM EXEMPTS THEM FROM PROVIDING A RECORDS INDEX TO THE PEOPLE, WE ASK IF THE DISTRICT WOULD CONSIDER REVISING THE RESOLUTION TO PROMOTE MORE TRANSPARENCY AND TRUST FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE DISTRICT, AND PROVIDE US WITH A RECORDS INDEX IN THE DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION FOR BUILDING, OR MAKE IT AVAILABLE ON THE DISTRICT WEBSITE.

THEY RESPONDED AS FOLLOWS.

AGENCIES ARE NOT REQUIRED TO MAINTAIN A SPECIFIC INDEX WHEN ITS GOVERNING BODY DETERMINES DOING SO WOULD BE UNDULY BURDENSOME. AT THIS TIME THE DISTRICT DOES NOT ANTICIPATE CHANGING OR UPDATING THAT WAS ESTABLISHED IN THE RESOLUTION 2009. THE DISTRICT HAS A BUDGET OF 400 TO 500 MILLION, AND YOU ARE TELLING US THAT IT WOULD BE BURDENSOME AND SUBSTANTIALLY DETRACT FROM THE PERFORMANCE OF OTHER DUTIES? SO EVERY TIME THE PEOPLE WANT TO VIEW SOME DOCUMENTS ABOUT CURRICULUM SURVEYS, TEST POLICIES, ETC., WE WILL HAVE TO BEG THE SCHOOL DISTRICT TO PLEASE ALLOW US TO VIEW THE DOCUMENTS THAT WE HAVE PAID TO CREATE.

THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.

ONE OF THE STATE RULES IS THAT WE CAN'T OVERSPEND WHAT THE BUDGET THAT THE BOARD HAS APPROVED.

AND THIS REPORT TAKES ACTUAL EXPENDITURES, WHICH IS THE RULE, AND COMBINES THEM WITH PROJECTED EXPENDITURES WHICH HAVE NOT HAPPENED. THEY MAY NOT HAPPEN OR THEY MAY NOT HAPPEN BY THE END OF AUGUST.

SO I JUST WANT TO LET YOU KNOW THAT CAPITAL PROJECTS FUND WILL NOT BE OVERSPENT AT AUGUST 31ST.

CAPITAL PROJECTS, YOU HAVE TO TAKE A MULTI YEAR PLAN AND CAPTURE IT IN THE F195 THE ONE YEAR BUDGET DOCUMENT.

IT DOESN'T WORK VERY WELL FOR CAPITAL PROJECTS.

SO THEY WILL NOT BE OVERSPENT AT THE END OF THE YEAR.

REMEMBER, IT'S HARD TO REMEMBER, IT'S BEEN A YEAR ALREADY THAT THE JULY REPORT WAS WHEN WE WERE UNDERGOING THE SKYWARD CONVERSION TO THE CUMULATIVE PRODUCT, AND WE WERE UNABLE TO OBTAIN ENCUMBRANCE DATA FOR THE JULY REPORT A YEAR AGO.

SO THIS REPORT IS NOT APPLES TO APPLES BECAUSE OF LAST JULY.

ON REVENUES JUST A REMINDER THAT WE DID A RECERTIFICATION LAST FALL FOR OUR 2024 CALENDAR YEAR LEVY.

WE WILL BE GETTING DATA HERE IN THE NEXT MONTH TO SEE IF WE NEED TO DO ANOTHER TRUE UP TO WHAT THE COUNTY SAYS TO LEVY IN TAXES.

WE ALSO HAVE EXCEEDED OUR REVENUE BUDGET BY TUITION IN THE DHH PROGRAM.

AND THEN IF YOU LOOK AT THE OTHER REVENUES COLUMN, WHICH IS HIGHER THAN BUDGET, IT'S BECAUSE WE HAVE THE PUGET SOUND TAXPAYER ACCOUNTABILITY GRANT, EARLY CHILDHOOD GRANT, AND THE FAMILY RESOURCE ADVOCATE GRANTS.

ONE OF THE CHALLENGES ON TRAVEL, BUDGETING TRAVEL IS WE BUDGET THAT TRAVEL THAT IS CHARGED TO BASIC ED.

IF SOMEONE SAYS.

OH, WE'RE GOING TO DO A FIELD TRIP AND WE'VE GOT THIS FUNDING SOURCE FOR THE FIELD TRIP, WE DON'T KNOW THAT FUNDING SOURCE EXISTED OR THAT THEY WERE GOING TO DO A FIELD TRIP. YOU KNOW, A GOOD 15 MONTHS BEFORE IT HAPPENED.

SO THAT'S WHY THAT TRAVEL BUDGET ALWAYS APPEARS OVERSPENT.

IT'S A LITTLE BIT TRICKY TO PUT IT IN THE RIGHT PLACE.

IN BOTH REVENUES AND EXPENDITURES IF WE HAD THE JANUARY 15TH FREEZE EVENT, PARTICULARLY CLASSROOMS WERE DAMAGED AT MEADOWDALE ELEMENTARY, AS WELL AS SOME DAMAGE AT SOME OTHER SITES.

THE DAMAGE HAS BEEN REPAIRED AND INSURANCE RECOVERIES ARE PAYING FOR THAT, BUT THERE ARE ALSO AN INCREASE IN EXPENDITURES AS A RESULT OF THAT, THAT DAMAGE.

SO AGAIN, THE MAIN REASON THAT FUND BALANCE IS HIGHER IS BECAUSE OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION SAFETY NET AWARD IS $1.8 MILLION ABOVE WHAT WE BUDGETED, WHICH IS VERY IMPRESSIVE WORK BY THAT SPECIAL EDUCATION TEAM.

SO KUDOS TO THEM.

AND I JUST WANT TO AS LYDIA SWITCHES TO OUR NEXT SLIDE, CALL THAT IT AGAIN AND ECHO THAT THIS IS A TEAM THAT'S WORKING VERY HARD TO MAXIMIZE THOSE POTENTIAL REVENUES TO THE DISTRICT. WE HAVE TO APPLY WHEN A STUDENT COSTS A CERTAIN AMOUNT OVER THE THRESHOLD OF WHAT WE ARE PROVIDED FOR SPECIAL ED, THAT TAKES HARD WORK FROM THE TEACHER LEVEL.

THOSE IEPS HAVE TO BE ABSOLUTE PERFECTION.

IT TAKES HARD WORK FROM THE TEAM THAT REVIEWS THEM, FROM THE FISCAL TEAM, WHICH IS TELLING THEM WHICH IEPS WILL BE COVERED UNDER SAFETY NET.

SO THEY REALLY HAVE WORKED VERY HARD OVER THE LAST PERIOD OF ABOUT FOUR YEARS TO MAXIMIZE OUR COLLECTIONS FROM THE SAFETY NET.

IT'S MONEY WE'RE ALREADY SPENDING.

SO TO MAXIMIZE THAT COLLECTION BACK FROM THE STATE FOR THOSE FUNDS.

OKAY. AGAIN, EXPENDITURES CORRESPOND.

THE INCREASE FOR THE FREEZE EVENT CORRESPOND TO THE AMOUNT OF THE INSURANCE RECOVERY.

THANK YOU, DIRECTOR KATIMS. WELL, AS YOU KNOW, WE HAD THIS LAST FRIDAY WAS THE GATHERING GENERAL ASSEMBLY ACROSS THE STATE OF THE WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION I ATTENDED ON FRIDAY.

IT WAS. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT STATEWIDE GATHERING TO UPDATE OUR POLICIES SO THAT WE CAN TOGETHER ADVOCATE IN OLYMPIA ON AND DIRECT OUR STRATEGIC ADVOCACY POSITIONS AT THE STATE AND THE FEDERAL LEVEL.

WE REVIEWED OVER 50 POLICIES, AND I AM PROUD TO SAY THAT WE WERE ABLE TO STRENGTHEN POSITIONS AROUND THE AMPLE AND EQUITABLE FUNDING OF STAFFING BY ADDING SUBSTITUTES INTO THE LIST OF POSITIONS THAT NEED TO BE FULLY FUNDED, BY DOING A NEW MENTAL HEALTH POSITION FOR STUDENT SUPPORTS, DOING SOME ADVOCATING, STRENGTHENING OUR POSITION ON OPERATING COSTS WITH AMENDMENTS TO THE MATERIAL, SUPPLIES AND OPERATING COSTS POSITIONS, AND A NEW POSITION ON FULLY FUNDING DISTRICT INSURANCE COSTS.

AND WE ALSO LET'S SEE WHAT WE DO HAVE A NEW POSITIONS ON ADVANCING EDUCATIONAL EQUITY WITH EVIDENCE BASED LITERACY, AND USING DISAGGREGATED DATA IN BOARD REPORTS, AND ALSO IMPLEMENTING THE AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES WORKGROUP RECOMMENDATIONS, WHICH WAS A POLICY BROUGHT FORWARD BY EMILY WILLIAMS IN SHORELINE.

SO WAS A REALLY PLEASED TO SUPPORT THESE POLICIES.

AND WHAT WAS SURPRISING HERE IS WE WERE ABLE TO END, NOT SURPRISING, VERY PROUD THAT RATHER THAN A TWO DAY CONFERENCE, IT WAS A ONE DAY CONFERENCE THAT FINISHED UP ON FRIDAY.

OTHERWISE, I MAY HAVE BEEN TAPPING IN SOME FELLOW BOARD MEMBERS TO HELP ATTEND THE LONG POLICY DISCUSSION MEETINGS.

AND SO THE NEXT STEP IS, IS TO I'LL SUBMIT ALL OF THE POLICY PRIORITIES THAT WE DETERMINED LAST AT OUR LAST MEETING.

AND ELECTIONS FOR NEW POSITIONS ARE GOING TO BE OPENING UP OCTOBER 1ST, AND ALL BOARD MEMBERS WILL GET TO VOTE IN THOSE.

AND SO WHAT'S NICE ABOUT IT IS IT SEEMS THAT IT'S MUCH MORE FOCUSED AND IT'S FOCUSING ON THE NEEDS, WHICH IS FUNDING.

YEAH. THE FUNDING WITH THE BUDGET CRISIS THAT ALL THE STUDENTS, ALL THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE FACING, I THINK THAT HAD A HEIGHTENED AWARENESS OF THE NEED TO SPEAK COLLABORATIVELY AND COLLECTIVELY AND FOCUS ON BUDGET ISSUES.

SO YEAH. NO. THAT'S GREAT.

YEAH. ALSO, I WANTED TO MENTION WSSDA HAS A STUDENT NETWORK THAT'S GETTING GOING.

SO NOW THAT WE HAVE STUDENTS ENGAGED, I KNOW THAT THE MEETINGS ARE COMING UP.

AND WSSDA UPDATED THEIR WEBSITE SO IT'S EASIER TO FIND SOME OF THAT INFO.

SO JUST KEEP THAT IN MIND.

YOU KNOW, IF YOU HAVE THE TIME AND ENERGY TO START GETTING INVOLVED AS A STUDENT REP IN THE STUDENT REP NETWORK, IS THAT WHAT IT'S CALLED? ACROSS THE STATE, IT'S STUDENT REPS LIKE YOURSELF WHO ARE ON SCHOOL BOARDS ALL ACROSS DISTRICTS.

AND IT WAS INTERESTING BECAUSE THEY SHARED WHAT THEY HAVE IN COMMON AND THE COMMON KINDS OF CONCERNS OR INTERESTS OR IDEAS THAT THEY HAD.

AND ALSO, YOU KNOW, THINGS THAT WERE DIFFERENT WHERE SOMEBODY WOULD SAY, I'M DEALING WITH THIS AND THEY WOULD SAY, WELL, THAT'S INTERESTING.

WE DIDN'T HAVE THAT. SO ANYWAY, JUST TO GIVE YOU SORT OF A PERSPECTIVE ON THAT WORK SO YOU GET, YOU HEAR WHAT'S GOING ON MORE ACROSS THE STATE ALSO FROM STUDENT PERSPECTIVES.

BUT STUDENTS LIKE YOURSELVES WHO ARE VERY INVOLVED.

SO ANYWAY, JUST A LITTLE MARKETING FOR GREAT MARKETING.

AND WE'RE TWO WE'RE TWO WEEKS AHEAD ON OUR ROBOT THIS YEAR THAN WE WERE LAST YEAR.

AND I THINK THAT THAT COMES FROM BEING ABLE TO AS YOURSELF LIKE, COMPETE LIKE NOT FOR YOUR SCHOOL NECESSARILY, BUT ALSO LIKE FOR YOUR TEAM AND LIKE THE WORK THAT YOU SEE PUT IN FROM YOUR FRIENDS.

AND IT BECOMES MORE PERSONAL AND LESS BROAD WHEN YOU REALLY SET THOSE GOALS FOR YOURSELF.

AND SO I THINK IT'S REALLY GREAT THAT THEY'RE STARTING THAT IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, BECAUSE THAT KIND OF TRANSFERS OVER TO HIGH SCHOOL AND IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT AND GREAT.

ALSO, RECENTLY I JUST FINISHED READING A BOOK CALLED THE TEACHERS BY ALEXANDRA ROBBINS IN WHICH SHE LOOKED AT THE EXPERIENCES OF PRIMARILY FOCUSED ON THREE TEACHERS IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE COUNTRY IN DIFFERENT LEVELS OR ASSIGNMENTS, AND DID AS WELL AS OTHER SUPPLEMENTAL INTERVIEWS, AND REALLY BROUGHT A CLARITY TO THE DIFFICULTY AND THE DEMANDS THAT ARE MADE ON TEACHERS THESE DAYS.

I JUST THINK THAT IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE THINK ABOUT WAYS TO LIMIT SOME OF THE PROBLEMS THAT SHE MENTIONS IN THERE, SOME OF THE DEMANDS FOR TIME FOR THAT, THAT IMPACT THE TEACHER'S ABILITY TO BE PART OF THEIR FAMILY, PART OF THEIR COMMUNITY.

DID NOT HAVE THAT CAPACITY LAST YEAR.

AND SO MUCH OF THAT AS A RESULT OF AS MR. SCHAEFER. IS THAT RIGHT? YEAH. ATTESTED.

WE ACTUALLY THIS YEAR, I THINK YOU WEREN'T HERE AT THE LAST BOARD MEETING WHEN WE TALKED ABOUT HAVING ELEVATED THREE OF OUR GOALS TO GIVE THEM FOCUS, AND WE'VE ASTERISKED THEM.

YOU WILL SEE MUCH MORE INTENTIONAL WORK IN TERMS OF OUR STUDY SESSIONS ON THE TOPICS OF WHAT WE HAVE ELEVATED AS WE FEEL ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT GOALS. IN TERMS OF SOME OF THE PRACTICES YOU TALK ABOUT, LIKE SPELLING TESTS AND CURSIVE.

SO THERE'S A LOT OF RESEARCH IN TEACHING AND LEARNING.

IT'S THE SAME AS I DON'T THINK YOU WOULD WANT YOUR DOCTOR TO BE DOING THE SAME PRACTICES THAT WERE DONE ON YOU AS A CHILD, BECAUSE THERE'S A LOT OF RESEARCH IN MEDICINE.

THERE'S A LOT OF RESEARCH IN EDUCATION AND TEACHING AND LEARNING.

SO WHEN WE TALK ABOUT OUR PHONICS PROGRAM, OUR PHONICS PROGRAM IS TEACHING THE UNDERLYING NEEDED SKILLS, THE FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS THAT GO AS PART OF SPELLING AND LEARNING HOW TO READ.

THERE'S A LOT OF INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT IS HOW WHAT BEST TEACHING AND LEARNING IS.

AND I JUST ENCOURAGE EVERYBODY TO GO TO THE OSPI WEBSITE AND LOOK AT THE STANDARDS, THE STATE STANDARDS, TO SEE WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS IN TERMS OF, AS YOU SAY, READING, WRITING AND ARITHMETIC, BUT ACROSS ALL THE SUBJECTS.

IN TERMS OF HIGHER LEVELS OF MATH, THERE ARE REQUIREMENTS IN TERMS OF NUMBER OF YEARS OF MATH, NUMBER OF YEARS OF SCIENCE LAB WORK, THAT HAS TO BE TAKEN.

THE EXPECTATIONS ARE VERY HIGH IN TERMS OF THOSE KINDS OF THINGS.

AND LASTLY, JONATHAN, I'D REALLY LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR ENCOURAGING EVERYBODY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ADVOCACY WITH THE STATE.

IT'S OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

IT'S FREE, BUT WE ASK YOU TO REGISTER SO WE CAN HAVE THE PROPER NUMBER OF SEATING AND HANDOUTS AND EVERYTHING.

THERE ARE CURRENTLY TEN STATE LEGISLATORS WHO HAVE COMMITTED TO COMING.

THE GOAL IS TO PROVIDE INFORMATION AND PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT THE IMPACTS ON THEIR PARTICULAR SITUATION MAY BE A PARENT OR A STUDENT OR A TEACHER, WHATEVER, IN TERMS OF WHAT THE CURRENT FUNDING SITUATION IS.

AND THEN THERE WILL BE TIME FOR EVERYBODY TO GO AND SPEAK WITH THEIR LEGISLATORS ABOUT THE SITUATION, TO MAKE THEIR VOICE HEARD AND TO LEARN MORE. SOME PEOPLE MAY NOT THINK IT'S A CRISIS, BUT IT'S AN INFORMATIONAL TIME.
