IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE. I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF APPROVING TONIGHT'S AGENDA AS PRESENTED, PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE. AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED SAY NAY. ANY ABSTENTIONS. AND TONIGHT'S AGENDA IS APPROVED AS PRESENTED. NEXT, WE'LL HAVE THE SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT. [6. SUPERINTENDENT REPORT-6:35 pm] WELL, JUST BRIEFLY THIS EVENING, I HAD THE CHANCE TO DO MY FIRST SCHOOL VISIT OF THE YEAR TODAY AT BEVERLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. AND IT WAS JUST WONDERFUL TO GET OUT AND WATCH THE STUDENTS AND THE TEACHERS IN ACTION. IN PARTICULAR TODAY I GOT TO OBSERVE A LOT OF THE 95% PHONICS CURRICULUM WORKING ON THE, I SOUND, AND SO THAT WAS TERRIFIC IN THE CLOSED SYLLABLE. SO LEARNED A LOT ABOUT THAT AND HAD A GREAT TIME THERE. ALSO ALONGSIDE THE SCHOOL SUPERVISORS, DOCTOR SCHWAB AND DOCTOR JOUNG, I'M DOING DATA CHATS WITH OUR PRINCIPALS. AND SO WE BEGAN THOSE TODAY AS WELL. AND WE ALSO HAVE ALSO HAD JASON AILLAUD AND JON BELL, OUR TWO EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS OF STUDENT LEARNING AND STUDENT SERVICES, ALONGSIDE US, SO THAT WE CAN REALLY TALK WITH THE PRINCIPALS ABOUT THEIR DATA, PARTICULARLY GRADUATION AND SBA, DEPENDING ON THE LEVEL AND WHAT WE CAN DO TO SUPPORT THEM AS WE'RE ALL WORKING TOGETHER TO IMPROVE STUDENT OUTCOMES. THAT'S GREAT TO HEAR. WE USED TO DO DATA CHATS, AND IT'S NICE TO HEAR THAT IT'S BEING DONE. VERY IMPORTANT. NEXT IS APPROVAL OF MINUTES. [7. APPROVAL OF MINUTES-6:40 pm] WE HAVE TWO SETS OF MINUTES TO APPROVE. ONE IS FROM THE SEPTEMBER 10, 2024 SPECIAL MEETING, WHICH WAS OUR STUDY SESSION ON START AND END TIMES. AND THE SECOND ONE IS APPROVAL FOR MINUTES FROM THE SEPTEMBER 10TH, 2024 REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING. DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND. I'LL MOVE TO APPROVE. SECOND. I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND. IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE. I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF APPROVING THE MINUTES FROM THE SEPTEMBER 10TH, 2024 SPECIAL MEETING AND THE SEPTEMBER 10TH, 2024 REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE. AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED SAY NAY. ANY ABSTENTIONS? AND THE MINUTES FROM THE SEPTEMBER 10TH, 2024 SPECIAL MEETING AND REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING ARE APPROVED. NEXT, WE HAVE ONE OF OUR FAVORITE THINGS, WHICH IS SCHOOL PRESENTATION TIME. [8. SCHOOL PRESENTATION- 6:45 pm] INDEED, TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT OF THE YEAR THAT WE BEGIN REALLY INFUSING STUDENT VOICE BACK INTO OUR MEETINGS ALONG WITH OUR STUDENT ADVISORS. WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A PRESENTATION THIS EVENING, OUR FIRST OF THE YEAR FROM SHERWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. AND WE'RE GOING TO BEGIN WITH OUR STUDENTS FROM SHERWOOD. GOOD EVENING SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS. PRESIDENT NANCY KATIMS, VICE PRESIDENT CARIN [LAUGHTER]. VICE PRESIDENT CARIN CHASE, DIRECTORS THOM GERRARD, KEITH SMITH AND HAWK CRAMER. AND DOCTOR MINER, OUR SUPERINTENDENT AND FAMILIES OF THE COMMUNITY OF EDMONDS. MY NAME IS DAHLIA. MY NAME IS MORGAN AND MY NAME IS LAUREN. AND WE HAVE ALL BEEN AT SHERWOOD SINCE KINDERGARTEN. DO YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT A DATA CHAT IS. HERE'S HOW IT WORKS FOR ME. I MET MY TEACHER AND TALKED ABOUT I-READY SCORES LIKE WHAT GRADE LEVEL I'M PERFORMING AT AND HOW I DID. IF YOU LOOK ON THE SCREEN, YOU'LL SEE MY DATA CHAT PAPERS. [00:05:03] THIS IS WHAT I DID. FIRST, I TRACKED MY READINGS. FIRST, I TRACKED MY READING SCORE AND DETERMINED WHAT I WAS GOOD AT AND WHAT I NEEDED TO WORK ON, THEN SET GOALS FOR WHAT I WANT TO DO OR HOW FAR I WANT TO GET BY THE END OF THE YEAR. MY GOAL MAY NOT BE SOMETHING MY TEACHER SET FOR ME. IT COULD BE SOMETHING THAT I CAME UP WITH ON MY OWN AND THOUGHT IT MIGHT HELP ME IMPROVE MY I-READY SCORES AND HELP THEM GO UP. SO I DECIDED TO FOCUS ON VOCABULARY AND I CREATED MY PLAN. DO YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT INFORMATION WE USE IN OUR DATA CHATS? WE USE THE IRA DIAGNOSTICS FOR READING AND MATH. I LOOKED AT THE RESULTS TOGETHER FOR READING MATH WITH MY TEACHER. BUT FOR NOW, WE WILL FOCUS ON READING. MY TEACHER AND I SET A GOAL FOR EACH AREA. WE DETERMINE THE GOAL BY LOOKING AT WHERE I CURRENTLY SCORED AND DECIDED WHAT AREA TO FOCUS ON. FOR EXAMPLE, I SAID I WAS REALLY CLOSE TO FINISHING THE VOCABULARY AREA AND MY TEACHERS CALL IT DOMAIN, AND I ASKED IF MY TEACHER COULD SHUT DOWN THE OTHER DOMAINS SO THAT I CAN IMPROVE AND JUST FOCUS ON JUST THAT SKILL. ONCE I FINISHED THE LESSON IN THAT AREA, IT FELT GOOD THAT MY HARD WORK WAS PAYING OFF. IT FELT GOOD WHEN I GOT QUESTIONS RIGHT AND MY TEACHER HELPED ME ALONG THE WAY. I COULD SEE THE RESULTS IN THE NEXT DIAGNOSTIC. WHEN I WAS SETTING MY GOAL, I KNEW. WHEN I WAS SETTING WHERE AM I? I USED THE BAR GRAPH TO SAY WHERE I WAS AND HOW MANY POINTS I NEEDED TO REACH MY GROWTH GOAL OR MY STRETCH GOAL. MY TEACHER WAS SUPPORTIVE OF WHAT I ACCOMPLISHED AND IT MADE ME FEEL GOOD. YOU CAN SEE MY EXAMPLE ON THE SCREEN. DATA CHATS HAPPENED IN MANY CLASSES AND THE I-READY SUCCESS WAS SHARED THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL. ACTUALLY WE TALKED ABOUT SETTING GOALS IN OUR CLASS AND OUR TEACHER AND OUR CCC COMMUNITY [INAUDIBLE]. SORRY. [LAUGHTER] GROUP OF STUDENTS WHO REPRESENT THE SCHOOL AS A GROUP. WATCHING THEIR PROGRESS. WHERE AM I? OH. AS A GROUP. WALK AWAY, WALK AWAY. AS WE IMPROVED OUR COMMUNITY CONNECTION COUNCIL, A GROUP OF STUDENTS WHO REPRESENT THE SCHOOL AS A GROUP, WE TALKED AND HELPED MAKE DECISIONS ABOUT HOW WE CAN GET STUDENTS TO WANT TO DO THE I-READY AND GET EXCITED ABOUT WATCHING THEIR PROGRESS. AS WE IMPROVED, OUR CLASS GOT [INAUDIBLE] AN I-READY CHARACTER AS THE STUDENTS GOT EXCITED ABOUT WATCHING OVER THE CHARACTERS. AS WE DID OUR LESSONS, THE CHARACTERS ROTATED AROUND THE ROOM, THE CLASS, AND THE CLASSROOM AS EACH PERSON DID THEIR LESSONS, THE PERSON IN THE CLASS WHO HAD THE MOST MINUTES GOT TO KEEP THE STUFFIE ON THEIR DESK. ALSO, MRS. SALTZMAN MADE ANNOUNCEMENTS THAT CELEBRATED THE CLASSES, THE CLASSES THAT IMPROVED THE MOST BY GETTING THEIR MINUTES AND THEIR LESSONS. THEN THE LITTLE KIDS REALLY LOVED IT AND MOTIVATED THE KIDS TO WANT TO GET THE STUFFIE WANT TO BE ON THE ANNOUNCEMENTS AND LISTEN TO THE ANNOUNCEMENTS. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, IT GOT KIDS TO WANT TO DO THEIR I-READY. THANK YOU FOR LETTING US BE HERE TONIGHT TO TALK ABOUT DATA CHATS. BECAUSE WE HAVE DATA CHATS WITH OUR TEACHER, IT WILL HELP US. AIM FOR THE STARS, OUR THEME THIS SCHOOL YEAR. [APPLAUSE] GOES FIRST OKAY, THAT ONE. WE WANT THIS ONE. THIS ONE. MY NAME IS WILL AND I'M GOING TO EXPLAIN WHAT WIN TIME IS. WIN TIME STANDS FOR WHAT I NEED TIME. STUDENTS DO DIFFERENT THINGS. WE GO TO DIFFERENT ROOMS WITH DIFFERENT TEACHERS AND SEE PEOPLE WE DON'T ALWAYS GET TO SEE. WE ALWAYS SEE SOMEONE WE KNOW. WE DO DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES. NOT EVERYONE DOES THE SAME THING. WE MOVE INTO DIFFERENT GROUPS AREAS QUICKLY AND I GOT USED TO IT FAST. WE SOMETIMES ARE CHALLENGED. LEARNING IS FUN AND EXCITING. WE ROTATE GROUPS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. WE EVEN GET TO CELEBRATE. SOMETIMES STUDENTS READ BOOKS. GOOD EVENING, BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND SUPERINTENDENT MINER. MY NAME IS BENNETT AND I AM A THIRD GRADER AT SHERWOOD ELEMENTARY. AND I'M GOING TO BE TELLING YOU WHAT WE DO DURING WIN. DURING WIN, SOME GROUPS WORK ON DIFFERENT SKILLS. SOME GROUPS WORK ON COMPREHENSION OF FICTION AND NONFICTION. SOME WORK ON SOUNDS AND WORDS, SOME STUDENTS WORK ON VOCABULARY, AND SOME DO BATTLE OF THE BOOKS. THERE ARE EVEN PHONICS STARS. ONE OF MY FAVORITE GROUPS IS DOING FLUENCY WITH OUR TEACHER AND READER'S THEATER. WE CAN BE READING CHAPTER BOOKS AND LITERACY CIRCLES. SOMETIMES WE PLAY GAMES AROUND THE SKILL WE ARE WORKING ON. [00:10:03] WE ALWAYS ARE PROUD OF OUR SUCCESS AT THE END. HOLD IT. HOLD IT. MY NAME IS LINNEA AND I AM IN THIRD GRADE AT SHERWOOD. I LIKE WIN BECAUSE I GOT TO GO TO OTHER CLASSES AND MEET DIFFERENT TEACHERS. I GOT TO READ WITH FRIENDS I DON'T NORMALLY SEE. I WANT TO KEEP DOING WIN BECAUSE I GOT SMARTER AND WE GOT TO PLAY GAMES AND WATCH MOVIES ABOUT WHAT WE READ. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING TO WHY I LIKE WIN. WE TAKE WIN TIME FOR THE WIN. YEAH. WE'RE GOOD. E-A-G-L-E-S. E-A-G-L-E-S. E-A-G-L-E-S. WE ARE THE SHERWOOD EAGLES! OH, WE'RE AT SHERWOOD AND WE'RE THE BEST. [SINGING] YOU CAN REALLY PUT US TO THE TEST. OH, WE'RE THE E-A-G-L-E-S. OH, WE'RE THE E-A-G-L-E-S. [SINGING] WOO HOO! [APPLAUSE] DID YOU WANT THEM TO STAY FOR QUESTIONS? THAT WAS WONDERFUL. WELL, LET'S SEE IF PEOPLE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS HERE. SO OUR STUDENT ADVISORS AS WELL AS OUR BOARD DIRECTORS ARE ALL WELCOME TO MAKE ANY COMMENTS OR HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR THE STUDENTS. NO. DO YOU WANT TO GO FIRST? GO AHEAD. ALL RIGHT. I ALWAYS LOVE THE STUDENT PRESENTATIONS, BUT THIS ONE WAS JUST HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD FOR ME. WHEN KIDS CAN COME AND TALK ABOUT THEIR SUCCESS BY SETTING GOALS AND MEETING THEIR GOALS, BY EXPLAINING HOW THEY SET THEIR GOALS AND EXPLAIN HOW THEY KNOW THEY'RE MEETING THEIR GOALS, THAT MAKES ME SUPER HAPPY AS A DIRECTOR. BECAUSE ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE ALL HAVE TO DO HERE IS TO SEE HOW WE CAN CONTINUE TO IMPROVE OUR DISTRICT FOR ALL KIDS. AND WHAT YOU'RE DOING IN YOUR SCHOOL IS, IS SPECIAL. AND HOPEFULLY THIS KIND OF SAME THING IS GOING TO BE HAPPENING IN ALL SCHOOLS ACROSS OUR DISTRICT. SO MY QUESTION FIRST QUESTION IS TO ANY OF YOU, HOW DIFFERENT IS THIS YEAR AS OPPOSED TO LAST YEAR OR THE YEAR BEFORE THAT? YOU WANT TO ANSWER? MAYBE LIKE DIFFERENT CLASSROOMS? NOT REALLY THE DIFFERENCE. I DON'T REALLY CARE. I THINK THAT WE ARE MORE ORGANIZED THAN WE WERE. OKAY. THANK YOU. OTHER COMMENTS. QUESTIONS. SO WE HAD A SAMPLE PLAN I THINK. WAS IT LAUREN WHO'S WORKING ON VOCABULARY? YEAH. ALL RIGHT. SO LAUREN, I LOVE AS A FORMER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LIBRARIAN, I LOVE ANY PLAN THAT SAYS READ, READ, READ IS PART OF HOW YOU ACHIEVE IT. YEAH. DO YOU HAVE PLANS OF WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO BE READING? I FEEL LIKE IT'S OH. WHENEVER I PICK UP A BOOK THAT I LIKE, IT'S A LOT EASIER TO READ THAN A BOOK THAT, LIKE MY TEACHER, MAY PICK THAT I DON'T LIKE VERY MUCH. [LAUGHTER] AND I'M SURE MR. SONNEN WILL HELP YOU FIND JUST THOSE BOOKS. YES. YES. ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU. OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS TO ANY OF OUR STUDENTS WANT TO WEIGH IN OUR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS? I JUST THINK IT'S REALLY COOL THAT YOU GUYS ARE TAKING CONTROL OF YOUR LEARNING IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND JUST EVEN LOOKING AT. WHAT WAS IT? WAS IT LAUREN THAT WANTED TO HAVE THE THE SEVENTH GRADE VOCABULARY? THAT'S REALLY COOL. THANK YOU. WELL, I'D LIKE TO SAY WE ALL SET GOALS. SO AS A SCHOOL BOARD WE HAVE GOALS. AS A DISTRICT, WE HAVE GOALS. AS GROWN UPS WE HAVE GOALS. YOU'RE LEARNING HOW IMPORTANT IT IS AT YOUR AGE TO HAVE GOALS BECAUSE IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE AND YOU GET TO SEE YOUR PROGRESS. AND YOU KNOW WHEN YOU'RE MEETING THOSE GOALS. AND I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPRESSIVE NOT ONLY THAT YOU'RE DOING THAT, BUT YOU'RE USING THE INFORMATION TO HELP MOVE YOUR LEARNING FORWARD. SO I AGREE WITH DIRECTOR CRAMER. THIS WAS A PARTICULARLY SPECIAL PRESENTATION FROM YOU GUYS, BECAUSE THIS IS JUST THE KIND OF THING WE LIKE TO HEAR FROM OUR KIDS AND WE'RE GLAD. ALSO, I LOVE YOUR SONG. JUST GOT TO SAY IT. THANK YOU. JUST GOT TO SAY. THANK YOU SO MUCH. [00:15:02] THANK YOU. I DO WANT TO JUST ADD ALSO THAT DIRECTOR KATIMS LOVES DATA. SO BRINGING THE DATA CHAT IS LIKE BRILLIANT. AND YOU ARE ALL SO THRILLED THAT YOU WERE ABLE TO COME HERE AND ALSO PRACTICE YOUR PUBLIC SPEAKING. IT WAS WONDERFUL. THANK YOU SO MUCH. THANK YOU. IN ADDITION, I WANT TO POINT OUT, SINCE DIRECTOR CHASE POINTED THIS OUT, YOU MAY NOT BE THINKING ABOUT IT, BUT YOU'RE USING MATH ALL THROUGHOUT THERE. WHEN YOU'RE DOING YOUR GRAPHS, YOU'RE SETTING YOUR GOALS, YOU'RE KEEPING TRACK OF THINGS THAT'S MATH. SO YOU MAY NOT BE THINKING ABOUT YOUR GOALS IN MATH, BUT WHAT I LOVE SEEING IS YOU'RE USING MATH IN EVERYDAY LIFE, WHICH IS WHAT MATH IS THE BEST FOR, IS SOLVING EVERYDAY PROBLEMS. SO YAY! THANK YOU. ONE LAST QUESTION FROM ME. OH, SORRY. OKAY, SORRY. HI, GUYS. JUST WATCHING YOUR PRESENTATION AS, LIKE, THIRD AND FOURTH GRADERS, LIKE, HEARING ABOUT YOUR GOALS AND YOU SETTING UP YOUR GOALS YOURSELF INSTEAD OF YOUR TEACHERS, AND THAT'S GREAT AND ALL. AND I WANTED TO ASK, LIKE, WAS IT SCARY FOR YOU GUYS TO, LIKE, FIRST RECEIVE THAT AND SET A GOAL FOR YOURSELF? LIKE, WERE YOU INTIMIDATED THAT YOU WOULD NOT, LIKE REACH YOUR GOAL? AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THAT IF YOU HAD THAT PROBLEM? ANYONE WANT TO ANSWER? YEAH. BECAUSE WE ARE IN WHAT I CAN SAY. BECAUSE WE HAD WIN TIME AND WE GOT TO LEARN ALL THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF READING, AND I THINK SOMETIMES, I THINK SOMETIMES IT WAS. I THINK SOMETIMES IT WAS HARD. BUT THE NICE PART IS THAT, LIKE, YOU CAN MAKE THEM CUSTOM TO YOU, AND IF YOU NEED TO CHANGE THEM, THEN THAT'S OKAY. AND THEN YOU CAN JUST GO FROM THERE ON WHAT'S HARD AND WHAT ISN'T. AND. YEAH. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THAT WAS REALLY BRAVE OF THEM. GOOD JOB EVERYBODY. BRAVE OF THEM. I WAS TELLING THEM ABOUT THE STUDENT LEADERS AND HOW EXCITING IT IS FOR THEM TO BE HERE AND FOR THEM TO SEE YOU ALL IN ACTION, BECAUSE THIS IS WHAT THEY COULD ASPIRE TO BE ONE DAY. SO THANK YOU FOR BEING THE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES HERE AT THIS BOARD MEETING. WE'LL GO BACK TO MY YEAH RIGHT THERE. SO ONE MORE SLIDE OVER AND WE'RE JUST GOING TO TALK A LITTLE BIT. WE ARE FOCUSING ON READING OBVIOUSLY WITH OUR DATA CHATS, WHICH HAS BEEN REALLY, REALLY EFFECTIVE THIS PAST COUPLE OF YEARS. BUT OH I DO. THANKS. OKAY. SO FOR OUR READING DATA, WE WANT TO TELL YOU THAT OUR GOAL IS WITHIN THIS FIVE YEAR SPAN WAS TO IMPROVE FROM 61% TO 68% PROFICIENT BASED ON OUR SBA SCORES FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS IN THIRD THROUGH SIXTH GRADE. WE SET THAT GOAL FOR TWO REASONS. ONE IS WE WERE GOING BACK TO HISTORICAL DATA OF BEFORE COVID, WHERE WERE WE BEFORE COVID AND WHERE ARE WE NOW AND HOW CAN WE, YOU KNOW, SLOWLY INCREASE THAT PARAMETER BY THE END OF 2027-8 AND HOW WE WE ARE DOING THAT, THAT TIME FRAME THAT THE THIRD GRADERS WERE TALKING ABOUT, ABOUT WIN TIME HAS BEEN EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE. BASICALLY, OUR SECOND GRADERS, THEY WERE SECOND GRADE LAST YEAR AND THEY SAW A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF GROWTH IN THEIR SECOND GRADE. SO OUR PLAN IS TO NOW TAKE THAT TO FIRST GRADE AND TO THIRD GRADE. SO NOW THAT THEY'RE THIRD GRADERS, THEY KNOW THE ROUTINE OF THINGS, THEY'RE GOING TO PASS THAT ON TO THE OTHER TO THIRD GRADE. SO THEY'RE GOING TO BE WORKING ON COMPREHENSION OF HIGHER LEVEL TEXTS AND BEING ABLE TO DO LITERACY CIRCLES AND DOING HIGHER LEVEL THINKING AROUND COMPREHENSION, BECAUSE NOW THEY'VE MASTERED THAT. AND THEN ON THE FLIP SIDE, WE'RE GOING TO GO DOWN TO FIRST GRADE TO MAKE SURE THAT THOSE PHONICS GROUPS ARE HAPPENING. LAP IS HAPPENING. ALL OF THE SKILLS THAT THE KIDS NEED IN ORDER TO GET TO THE POINT WHERE THEY'RE REALLY COMPREHENDING AND FLUID WITH THEIR READING. SO HAVING THE SECOND GRADERS SHARE WITH YOU THEIR INFORMATION ABOUT WIN TIME AND WHAT I NEED HAS BEEN REALLY EFFECTIVE. AND I KNOW THAT AS A SAMPLE, THEY ARE NOW GOING TO SPREAD THAT SECOND GRADE LOVE TO THE OTHER GRADE LEVELS SO THAT THEY'LL BE ABLE TO HAVE THAT EXPERIENCE AS WELL. AND WE WILL ONLY CONTINUE TO GET BETTER WITH OUR READING SKILLS. SO I THINK I PRETTY MUCH PRETTY MUCH TALKED ABOUT THAT. SO YOU CAN FLIP TO THE NEXT ONE. SO OUR THEORY OF ACTION IS WE WILL BE SHARING THAT INFORMATION. WE WILL FOCUS ON OUR INSTRUCTION IN THE WHOLE CLASS. WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON UTILIZING I-READY WITH FIDELITY AND ALSO REACHING THE STUDENTS THROUGH ALL SMALL GROUPS SO THAT WIN TIME REGARDLESS OF I-READY, IT'S ALL BASED ON STANDARD BASED PRACTICES THAT ARE GOING TO BE EFFECTIVE FOR INSTRUCTION. [00:20:01] OH, I'M IN CHARGE. SMALL GROUPS HAVE TARGETED THE INSTRUCTION FOR DATA. WE'RE USING ALL OF THAT DATA AND IT'S CONSTANTLY CHANGING, JUST LIKE AS WE SAID AS LAUREN SAID, THAT, YOU KNOW, SHE SAID HER GOALS AND SHE DECIDED SHE NEEDED TO CHANGE IT A LITTLE BIT. SOMETIMES THAT HAPPENS. SO ALONG THE WAY, AS WE'RE MONITORING THAT INFORMATION WE WILL SHARE IT. WE WILL REVISE, WE WILL REFLECT, WE WILL DECIDE HOW ARE WE GOING TO MIX UP OUR GROUPS A LITTLE BIT. SOME KIDS DO REALLY WELL REALLY QUICKLY IN ONE SETTING AND THEN NEED TO MOVE ON TO ANOTHER SETTING. AND SO IT'S BEEN REALLY, REALLY EFFECTIVE, AND WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING ALL STAKEHOLDERS INVOLVED IN THAT. WE'VE HAD OUR CLASSROOM TEACHERS, WE'VE HAD OUR ML TEACHERS, WE'VE HAD OUR LAP TEACHERS, SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS. EVERYBODY PUSHES IN AT THAT TIME. SO WE BLOCK OFF THAT SPECIFIC TIME FOR OUR KIDS TO REALLY GET WHAT THEY NEED. IN READING, WE USE LOTS OF INFORMATION FROM ACADIANS TO I-READY TO RUNNING READING RECORDS AND CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION AND FORMATIVE AND SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS. AND TEAM PLANNING IS ESSENTIAL FOR THIS. WE ACTUALLY HAVE ONE OF OUR SECOND GRADE TEACHERS IN THE AUDIENCE WHO HAS HELPED PLAN ALL THIS, AND IT'S NOT EASY. IT TAKES A LOT OF DEDICATION AND DETERMINATION, BUT WE ALSO SEE THE BIG PAYOFFS. SO JUST LIKE A DIET, LIKE YOU WORK HARD AND YOU WANT TO EXERCISE AND DO ALL THE THINGS YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DO. IF YOU DO IT RIGHT, IT'S EFFECTIVE. RIGHT. AND SO THAT'S HOW WE FELT ABOUT WIN TIME. AND SO WE SAW TREMENDOUS GROWTH. AND WE'RE REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SHARING THAT WITH THE NEXT GRADE LEVELS TO COME. SO WHERE ARE WE. WE'RE CURRENTLY TAKING ALL OF OUR I-READY ASSESSMENTS. AND IN THE MIDDLE OF RUNNING READING RECORDS, IN THE MIDDLE OF A CADENCE, IN THE MIDDLE OF ALL OF IT. SO UNFORTUNATELY, OUR HANDS ARE TIED AND WE'RE CHOMPING AT THE BIT TO GET IT STARTED. BUT UNTIL WE HAVE ALL THE DATA, WE CAN'T REALLY MOVE FORWARD YET. OUR TEACHERS ARE WORKING ON THE READING STRATEGIES THAT WORKBOOK BY JENNIFER SERRAVALLO, AND WE ALSO HAVE THE DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVES IN THE LITERACY DEPARTMENT HELPING OUR TEACHERS, COACHING THEM SO THAT WE CAN GET THE FIRST AND THIRD GRADE ON BOARD. ANY QUESTIONS? QUESTIONS? COMMENTS? I NOTICED THAT IT SEEMS LIKE I-READY IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF THIS. IT'S SOMETHING THAT THE BOARD IS WONDERING ABOUT BECAUSE I-READY SCORES DON'T SEEM TO BE CORRELATING VERY WELL WITH SBA. SO COULD YOU TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF THE I-READY IN YOUR PLAN? SURE. WELL, THAT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST PIECES OF DATA THAT WE HAVE THAT IS CONSISTENT. AND I THINK ONE OF OUR STRUGGLES IS COLLECTING AS MUCH DATA THAT IS NOT AS SUBJECTIVE, RIGHT. BECAUSE A RUNNING READING RECORD IS BASED ON WHAT A TEACHER'S PERSPECTIVE IS ABOUT THINGS. SO WE WANT TO COLLECT AS MUCH DATA AS POSSIBLE. AND I-READY IS A TOOL THAT WE CAN USE TO DO THAT. SO I THANK YOU. GREAT PRESENTATION. VERY CLEAR. BUT I HAVE A SORT OF FOLLOW UP QUESTION TO THAT. SURE. SO THE GOAL IS ABOUT MAKING SURE X AMOUNT OF STUDENTS, PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS ARE MEETING THE SBA. CORRECT. RIGHT. BUT THE MEASURE IS THE I-READY SO DO YOU DO YOU WORRY ABOUT A POTENTIAL MISMATCH BETWEEN THE TWO? WELL THE I-READY AND IS SUPPOSED TO BE TEACHING THE STATE STANDARDS, RIGHT. STATE STANDARDS ARE THE ONES THAT ARE IN THE ASSESSMENTS OF SBA. SO IF THEY'RE WORKING CORRECTLY, WE'RE GOING TO SEE GROWTH. OUR SECOND GRADERS STARTED OUT I THINK IT WAS 14% OF THEM WERE ABOVE OR ON LEVEL IN READING. AND AT THE END IT WAS 64%. THERE WERE 50% OF OUR ON AND ABOVE GRADE LEVEL, AND THAT WAS BASED ON WIN THE MEASURE YOU COULD SEE IN I-READY. BUT THE REALITY WAS, IS THE INSTRUCTION WASN'T NECESSARILY THE I-READY INSTRUCTION, IT WAS ACTUALLY THE INDIVIDUALIZED PLANNING FROM THE TEACHERS. YEAH. SO I DON'T. I DON'T KNOW IF I HAVE THAT EXACT ANSWER THAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR. WELL, IT SOUNDS LIKE WE'LL FIND THAT EXACT ANSWER AT THE END OF THIS YEAR WITH THE SBA SCORES FOR THIS CLASS. THIRD GRADE CLASS. RIGHT. AND IT ALSO SOUNDS LIKE THE IMPLEMENTATION, THE FIDELITY OF THE IMPLEMENTATION IS REALLY IMPORTANT, NOT JUST USING THE STUFF, BUT ALSO THE COORDINATION OF DESIGNING THOSE SMALL GROUPS AROUND IT. SO I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING HOW YOU GUYS DO. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK. ME TOO. THANK YOU. PIGGYBACKING ON THAT, FIRST OF ALL, GREAT JOB, STUDENTS. AND, ROBIN, YOUR PRESENTATION HAS BEEN GREAT. THANK YOU. BUT PIGGYBACKING ON THAT IN TERMS OF THINKING ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN I-READY AND WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT KIDS LEARNING AND RELATIONSHIP TO SBA? ONE OF THE QUESTIONS WE'VE HAD HAS TO DO WITH THE EXTENT TO WHICH STUDENTS ARE DOING THE I-READY INSTRUCTION. SO ACCORDING TO THE I-READY PUBLISHERS, I THINK IT'S 72 LESSONS PER YEAR THAT IS SORT OF THE [00:25:09] MAGIC NUMBER. AND SO WE'RE LOOKING AT TO SEE WHEN KIDS DO A CERTAIN NUMBER OF LESSONS DOES THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE. BUT YOU JUST SAID SOMETHING THAT MADE ME THINK HMMM. BECAUSE IF TEACHERS ARE DOING A GOOD JOB OF FOLLOWING UP ON THE INFORMATION THEY'RE GETTING FROM I-READY IN THEIR EVERYDAY INSTRUCTION, IT MAKES THE I-READY INSTRUCTION LESS IMPORTANT AND THE DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION MORE IMPORTANT. SO I'M WONDERING FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE AND WHAT YOU'VE SEEN, WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE BALANCE BETWEEN TO WHAT EXTENT ARE YOUR TEACHERS REALLY USING THAT I-READY INSTRUCTION ON A REGULAR BASIS, OR ARE THEY RUNNING WITH IT IN THEIR OWN PLANNING? I COULD SAY EACH GRADE LEVEL IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT BECAUSE SECOND GRADE USE THAT INFORMATION FOR MAKING GROUPS FOR, YOU KNOW, BEING ABLE AND OUR OTHER GRADES AS WELL FOR MAKING GROUPS AND FIGURING OUT WHERE KIDS ARE ACADEMICALLY. RIGHT. SO THEN THEY TAKE THE STANDARD INSTRUCTION AND THE CURRICULUM THAT WE'RE CURRENTLY GIVEN IN ADDITION. SO I THINK THEY HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER. AND I HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION. YOU JUST MENTIONED GROUPING. AND THROUGHOUT HERE YOU'VE TALKED ABOUT GROUPING AND REVISING GROUPING. I'M WONDERING TO WHAT EXTENT ARE YOU ABLE TO HAVE FLUID GROUPING AND CHANGING THE GROUPS AS NEW DATA COMES? TO WHAT EXTENT? HOW OFTEN DOES THAT HAPPEN? DOES IT HAPPEN ACROSS CLASSROOMS? I KNOW PLANNING IS REALLY TOUGH TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN. I'M JUST REALLY CURIOUS ABOUT HOW YOU CONFIGURE AND MAKE REGROUP AS NEEDED BASED ON HOW KIDS NEEDS CHANGE. SO WE USE THAT AS OFTEN AS WE HAVE NEW DATA. SO IF YOU'RE GOING TO USE I-READY AS AN EXAMPLE, THAT'S THREE TIMES A YEAR. DOESN'T MEAN THAT'S OUR ONLY SOURCE OF DATA. SO WE USE WHAT WE CAN CONSTANTLY AS THINGS ARE CHANGING. WHEN LAP GROUPS ARE REDONE AND THEY HAVE MORE ASSESSMENTS FOR LAP, WE CAN SEE KIDS THAT HAVE PASSED OUT OF THAT, OR WE HAVE [INAUDIBLE] RESULTS AND WE HAVE KIDS THAT ARE NOW ABLE TO, YOU KNOW, BE ABLE TO SPEAK AND MAYBE MOVE FORWARD IN THEIR KNOWLEDGE. SO THE GROUPS ARE DIFFERENT FOR EVERY GRADE LEVEL, AND THE REVISIONS OF THEM ARE BASED ON WHAT ASSESSMENTS THEY'RE USING, WHETHER THEY'RE SUMMATIVE. MOST OF THE SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS THEY'RE USING AT EACH GRADE LEVEL. ARE YOU ABLE TO GROUP ACROSS CLASSROOMS OR IS IT MOSTLY? WE SURE ARE. YEAH. GOOD FOR YOU. YEAH. SO OUR OUR PRIMARY ARE GOING ACROSS GRADE LEVELS THIS YEAR AND FOR READING AND OUR INTERMEDIATE FOURTH, FIFTH AND SIXTH ARE DOING IT FOR MATH. SO THAT'S THE OTHER HALF OF OUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN. THE MATH. THANK YOU. NO THAT'S THAT'S WONDERFUL. WONDERFUL. OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS. THANK YOU. EXCELLENT PRESENTATION. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR HAVING US TODAY. ABSOLUTELY. WE APPRECIATE ALL THE WORK THAT YOU'RE DOING AND IT SHOWS. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE]. OFF. NEXT IS ANOTHER REALLY FUN PART OF WHAT WE ARE HERE ABOUT. AND THAT IS THIS IS THE TIME FOR OUR STUDENT ADVISORS TO TAKE THEIR OATH OF OFFICE. [9. STUDENT ADVISOR OATH OF OFFICE- 7:05 pm] SO IF YOU ALL WILL COME UP HERE AND DOCTOR MINER IS GOING TO DO THE HONORS, AND MAYBE THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE A PORTABLE MIC AT YOUR TABLE, GO AHEAD AND BRING IT WITH YOU AND TURN IT ON AND WE'LL ALL GATHER DOWN THERE. OKAY, SO ARE WE ALL SET? THESE WERE OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE GOING TO BE WITH US THIS YEAR. THEY'VE ALREADY ATTENDED A SOME OF THEM YOU RECOGNIZE FROM LAST YEAR, AND THEY HAVE ATTENDED A LITTLE SESSION TO GET US GOING THIS YEAR. BUT I'M GOING TO HAVE THEM BEFORE WE TAKE THE OATH IF YOU CAN JUST SAY YOUR NAME AND WHAT SCHOOL YOU'RE AT AND WHAT YEAR YOU'RE AT, THAT WOULD BE GREAT. OH, LET ME MAKE SURE IT'S ON. HI. OH, HI. I'M TATIANA LINDBERG, I'M A JUNIOR, AND I'M FROM EDMONDS HEIGHTS. SO. YEAH. HI, I'M SCARLETT, AND I'M A JUNIOR AT EDMONDS WOODWAY HIGH SCHOOL. I'M VIVIAN, AND I'M A SENIOR AT MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL. OH, OKAY. THANK YOU. MY NAME IS AMAYA, AND I'M A SENIOR AT MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL. [00:30:01] MY NAME IS SANTIAGO AND I AM A SENIOR AT LYNNWOOD HIGH SCHOOL. YEAH. MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL, SO I CAN'T WAIT TO GET ALL THE INSIGHTS THAT WE'RE GOING TO GAIN FROM YOU THIS YEAR. BUT IN THE MEANTIME, LET'S TAKE THE OATH OF OFFICE. I'LL TRY TO BREAK THIS DOWN INTO SMALL SECTIONS. SO I STATE YOUR NAME. I, DO SOLEMNLY SWEAR. THAT I WILL SUPPORT. AND WILL FAITHFULLY PERFORM. ACCORDING TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY. LET'S GIVE THEM A BIG ROUND OF WELCOME. [APPLAUSE] OH, SURE. LET'S. AND BECAUSE OUR STUDENTS. JUST TO LET EVERYONE KNOW, BECAUSE OUR STUDENTS ARE BUSY PEOPLE WITH OTHER PROJECTS AS WELL, THEY'VE EACH SIGNED UP FOR A MINIMUM OF HALF OF THE MEETINGS THIS YEAR. SO WE'VE MADE SURE THAT WE'LL HAVE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES EVERY TIME. BUT AN INDIVIDUAL MAY NOT BE HERE EVERY SINGLE TIME DUE TO SOME OTHER COMMITMENTS THEY HAVE. SO, SO GRATEFUL TO ALL OF YOU FOR BEING WILLING TO STEP UP AND PARTICIPATE THIS YEAR. AND I'M GLAD YOU'RE HERE. NEXT UP NEXT IS PUBLIC COMMENTS. [10. PUBLIC COMMENTS-7:10 pm] BEFORE WE GET STARTED, I DID WANT TO NOTE THAT WE HAD TWO WRITTEN COMMENTS WHICH GO ON THE AGENDA ON BOARD DOCS FOR EVERYBODY TO SEE, BUT ONE OF THEM WAS FROM A PARENT WHO ASKED ABOUT THE ADOPTION CYCLE FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL CURRICULUM. AND I KNOW DOCTOR MINER WILL HAVE SOMEONE FOLLOW UP WITH HER TO MAKE SURE THAT SHE GETS THAT INFORMATION, BUT ALSO THAT THE INFORMATION THAT IS ON THE WEBSITE IS CURRENT BECAUSE THE PARENT WASN'T SURE ABOUT THAT. THE OTHER WRITTEN COMMENT WAS A COMMUNITY MEMBER WHO WAS THANKING US FOR STRENGTHENING THE RESOLUTION THAT WE ARE DOING TONIGHT ON SEXUAL HARASSMENT. THE GUIDELINES REGARDING OUR PUBLIC COMMENTS ARE ON THE DISTRICT WEBSITE. THEY'RE ON EACH BOARD MEETING AGENDA, AND THERE'S A COPY ON THE TABLE WHERE YOU SIGN IN TO MAKE A COMMENT. WE ASK THAT YOU LIMIT YOUR COMMENT TO THREE MINUTES, A TIMER WILL BE RUNNING SO THAT YOU CAN MONITOR YOUR TIME. PLEASE BE SURE TO TELL US YOUR NAME, YOUR CITY OF RESIDENCE, YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO THE DISTRICT, AND THE AGENDA ITEM OR SCHOOL DISTRICT TOPIC THAT YOU'RE ADDRESSING TONIGHT. PUBLIC COMMENTS ARE MADE FROM THIS FRONT PODIUM THAT'S FACING US. I DON'T HAVE IT IN FRONT OF ME. MAYBE. THE FIRST IS JONATHAN SCHAEFER. GOOD EVENING, SCHOOL BOARD. I'M GOING TO HOLD THIS UP. I'M A LITTLE TALL FOR THE PODIUM UP HERE. MY NAME IS JONATHAN SCHAEFER. I LIVE IN THE CITY OF MOUNTLAKE TERRACE. I TEACH AT MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL. I COACH CROSS COUNTRY AT MOUNTLAKE TERRACE TRACK. I'M THE ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR. ALL THE THINGS SOMETIMES I'M THE LAST PERSON LEFT IN THE BUILDING AND I'M HERE TO SAY I LOVE MY JOB. I LOVE THE PEOPLE I WORK WITH, MY COMMUNITY. I DO FEEL THAT THE SCHOOL BOARD HAS ITS PRIORITIES CORRECT IN TRYING TO PROTECT OUR STUDENTS. THE ONLY THING I WANT TO COME UP HERE AND SAY WAS KIND OF THE FRUSTRATION THAT I THINK MY COLLEAGUES ARE FEELING, ESPECIALLY ON THAT. WE NOTICED THIS MOST ABOUT THE COMMUNICATIONS, ABOUT THE ATHLETICS AND THE INCREASE IN ATHLETIC FEES. AND THE FIRST THING THAT MY ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT POINTED OUT TO ME WAS THE FIRST LINE THERE WAS AS THE RESULT OF COMMUNITY FEEDBACK. AND I KNOW I DON'T NEED TO EXPLAIN. YOU ARE ALL ABUNDANTLY AWARE. WE'RE REALLY AT A BREAKING POINT BEFORE WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO MAKE SOME SERIOUS AND HARSH CUTS, AND IN ORDER FOR THE STATE TO DO WHAT IT NEEDS TO DO, WE NEED TO GET THE COMMUNITY RALLIED BEHIND US AND PUT THAT PRESSURE ON THE STATE. AND SO THAT LEAVES ME WONDERING WHY THE FIRST SENTENCE IN THAT EXPLANATION IS NOT DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE STATE IS NOT FUNDING US APPROPRIATELY, AND I, AS SOMEONE WHO LOVES MY JOB, LOVES MY STUDENTS, WILL PUT IN THE HOURS. IT'S I KNOW THAT'S WHAT WE NEED AND IT'S DISHEARTENING TO NOT SEE THAT YET. SO IT'S MORE OF A SUGGESTION AND WE'RE NOT THE ONLY SCHOOL DISTRICT. [00:35:05] I THINK THIS IS GOING TO NEED TO BE A BIG PUSH FROM A LOT OF THEM, BUT I THINK THAT EVERY COMMUNICATION NEEDS TO HAVE SOME UNDERTONE OF WE NEED THE STATE TO STEP UP AND DO WHAT IT NEEDS TO DO AT THIS POINT, AND GETTING THAT COMMUNICATION TO OUR COMMUNITY I THINK WE'LL FIND AN EASIER TIME GETTING THAT SUPPORT FROM THEM. SO THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND I APPRECIATE ALL YOUR TIME AND ALL THAT YOU DO FOR US. THANK YOU VERY MUCH AND WE WILL BE DOING THAT. NEXT UP IS TONY SHAPIRO. GOOD EVENING. THANKS FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK A FEW WORDS HERE. THE CONTEXT OF MY POINTS WERE ACTUALLY SOMEWHAT APROPOS, WITH THE GOALS THAT THE STUDENTS FROM SHERWOOD ELEMENTARY MADE TONIGHT, WHICH IS HEARTENING TO SEE THAT STUDENTS ARE THINKING ABOUT THESE KIND OF THINGS. I WOULD LIKE TO ASK THE BOARD TO MAYBE CONSIDER MORE DISCUSSION ABOUT THE GOALS THAT YOU GUYS SET EVERY SPRING. IT SEEMS TO RECALL. YET THEY DON'T SEEM TO BE FOCUSED UPON MUCH AS YOU GO THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AND EXACTLY HOW YOU ARE IMPLEMENTING THESE GOALS, AND WORKING TO HAVE THEM CARRIED OUT IN A PRACTICAL WAY. FROM THE VANTAGE POINT OF AN OUTSIDE CITIZEN WE FEEL THAT THESE ASPECTS NEED TO BE COVERED IN A MORE FOCUSED FASHION. AND I THINK REALLY READING, WRITING, ARITHMETIC AND THE CONTEXT IS THE LOW GRADE LEVEL THAT WE HAVE WITH THE STATE TEST SCORES. AND I KNOW WE CAN ALL ARGUE ABOUT THE LEGITIMACY OF THESE TEST SCORES AND WONDER IF THEY ARE TOTALLY ACCURATE OF WHAT'S GOING ON. YET WE AS A SOCIETY ARE FALLING BEHIND IN SO MANY AREAS, AND I LOOK AROUND AND SEE WHAT'S GOING ON, WHETHER IT BE IN OUR CITIES OR WHETHER IT BE IN HOW THESE KIDS ARE FOCUSED IN THE CLASSROOM, WHETHER IT BE WITH IPADS OR WHATEVER, THE PADS THAT YOU GET, CHROME PADS YOU GUYS ARE USING. IS THIS A DISTRACTION FOR THESE KIDS THAT THAT CAUSES THEM NOT TO BE AS FOCUSED UPON THE ASPECTS OF READING, WRITING, AND ARITHMETIC THAT I THINK IS SUCH A CRITICAL ASPECT. WE KNOW OF A STUDENT THAT HAS LEFT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND GONE TO A PRIVATE SCHOOL, AND SHE HAS SPELLING TESTS EVERY YEAR, EVERY WEEK AND I HEARD THAT SHE WASN'T GETTING THAT HERE AT THIS SCHOOL, SHE HAS LEARNED TO WRITE CURSIVE, AND THE IDEA THAT SOMEHOW CURSIVE IS OUTMODED TODAY, IN TODAY'S SOCIETY. I'D LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT CURSIVE IS SOMETHING THAT IS VERY LEGITIMATE. AND THE ABILITY, I BET MOST OF YOU UP THERE ARE WRITING IN CURSIVE ON NOTES THAT YOU'RE YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT RIGHT NOW. SO I WOULD HOPE THAT THE DISTRICT WOULD PERHAPS WORK TO IMPLEMENT SOME OF THE YOU KNOW, SPELLING TESTS AGAIN AND PERHAPS HAVING CURSIVE AS A PRIORITY. ALSO, I WONDER A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MATHEMATICS. I DON'T KNOW, IT'D BE INTERESTING TO HEAR WHAT PROPORTION OF THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS MOVE INTO TRIGONOMETRY AND ANALYTIC GEOMETRY, AND SOME OF THE HIGHER LEVELS OF MATH WHO TAKES SECOND ALGEBRA TWO AND THINGS LIKE THIS? THOSE ARE IMPORTANT. IF KIDS WANT TO MOVE INTO A FIELD THAT WOULD UTILIZE THESE TOOLS AS THEY MOVE FORWARD IN, WHETHER THEY GO TO COLLEGE OR A COMMUNITY COLLEGE OR HOWEVER THEY WORK. MATH IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT ASPECT IN TODAY, AND I WOULD HOPE THAT THE DISTRICT MIGHT FOCUS A LITTLE BIT MORE ON THESE ASPECTS. SO THAT'S JUST A POINT I'D LIKE TO MAKE. AND IT SEEMS TO BE APPROPRIATE IN CONTEXT OF WHAT THE STUDENTS WERE DOING TODAY. SO THANK YOU. THANK YOU. STEVE MOSSMAN NEXT. I'M GOING TO CHOOSE TO DEFER TO A LATER DATE. OKAY. JASON MOORE THEN IS NEXT. JASON MOORE, AT LYNNWOOD. IT WAS RECENTLY BROUGHT TO OUR ATTENTION THAT THE DISTRICT WAS VISITED BY AN INDEPENDENT JOURNALIST WITH THE GOAL OF INSPECTING THE DISTRICT RECORDS INDEX. FOR THOSE WHO ARE UNAWARE OF WHAT THE RECORDS INDEX IS, IT IS EXPLAINED IN RCW 42.56.070. BASICALLY, IT'S A COMPILATION OF POLICIES, CURRICULUM STUDIES AND REPORTS, ETC. ACCORDING TO THE RCW, IT SHOULD BE MADE AVAILABLE FOR THE PUBLIC INSPECTION DURING REGULAR BUSINESS HOURS. HOWEVER, NOT ONE DISTRICT EMPLOYEE EVEN KNEW WHAT THE RECORDS INDEX WAS, ALL WHILE THE PUBLIC RECORDS OFFICER WAS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. WE ARE SURE THAT THE DISTRICT IS AWARE THAT THIS GENTLEMAN UPLOADED THIS REPORT TO YOUTUBE, AND THE VIDEO NOW HAS OVER 69,000 VIEWS. UNFORTUNATELY FOR THE DISTRICT, THIS REPORT HIGHLIGHTS THE DISTRICT'S LACK OF TRANSPARENCY AND WILLINGNESS TO PROVIDE THE PUBLIC [00:40:10] INFORMATION THEY NEED TO MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS, AND EDUCATED OPINIONS ABOUT HOW THE DISTRICT IS SERVING THE PUBLIC. THE ONLY REASON THIS JOURNALIST VISITED THE DISTRICT WAS BECAUSE HE RECEIVED TIPS FROM AN ELDERLY RESIDENT, STATING THAT HE SUSPECTED THE DISTRICT WAS NOT PROVIDING HIM ALL THE INFORMATION THAT HE REQUESTED REGARDING CURRICULUM USED IN THE SCHOOLS. SO WITHOUT A RECORDS INDEX, HOW ARE THE PEOPLE ABLE TO VERIFY IF THEY RECEIVED THE INFORMATION THAT THEY REQUESTED FROM THE DISTRICT? WHEN ASKED ABOUT THIS INTERACTION AND AFTER REVIEWING THE DISTRICT RESOLUTION NUMBER 09/52 FROM 2009, WHICH THEY CLAIM EXEMPTS THEM FROM PROVIDING A RECORDS INDEX TO THE PEOPLE, WE ASK IF THE DISTRICT WOULD CONSIDER REVISING THE RESOLUTION TO PROMOTE MORE TRANSPARENCY AND TRUST FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE DISTRICT, AND PROVIDE US WITH A RECORDS INDEX IN THE DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION FOR BUILDING, OR MAKE IT AVAILABLE ON THE DISTRICT WEBSITE. THEY RESPONDED AS FOLLOWS. AGENCIES ARE NOT REQUIRED TO MAINTAIN A SPECIFIC INDEX WHEN ITS GOVERNING BODY DETERMINES DOING SO WOULD BE UNDULY BURDENSOME. AT THIS TIME THE DISTRICT DOES NOT ANTICIPATE CHANGING OR UPDATING THAT WAS ESTABLISHED IN THE RESOLUTION 2009. THE DISTRICT HAS A BUDGET OF 400 TO 500 MILLION, AND YOU ARE TELLING US THAT IT WOULD BE BURDENSOME AND SUBSTANTIALLY DETRACT FROM THE PERFORMANCE OF OTHER DUTIES? SO EVERY TIME THE PEOPLE WANT TO VIEW SOME DOCUMENTS ABOUT CURRICULUM SURVEYS, TEST POLICIES, ETC., WE WILL HAVE TO BEG THE SCHOOL DISTRICT TO PLEASE ALLOW US TO VIEW THE DOCUMENTS THAT WE HAVE PAID TO CREATE. THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. IF ANYONE WANTS TO JOIN US IN OUR RESEARCH, YOU CAN REACH US AT PARENTSFORSAFESCHOOLS @PROTON.ME. PARENTS FOR SAFE SCHOOLS AT PROTON DOT ME. THANK YOU. NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS OUR CONSENT AGENDA. [11. CONSENT AGENDA-7:40 pm] OUR CONSENT AGENDA IS A COLLECTION OF ITEMS THAT ARE FAIRLY ROUTINE ITEMS THAT WE CAN VOTE ON IN ONE GROUP OR AND DISCUSS INDIVIDUALLY AND OR VOTE ON SEPARATELY IF WE CHOOSE TO. TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA HAS NINE ITEMS THREE RELATE TO PERSONNEL AND STAFF AGREEMENTS, TWO HAVE TO DO WITH CONTRACTS WITH OTHER EDUCATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS IN TERMS OF MEETING STUDENTS NEEDS. ONE IS OUR MONTHLY BILLS AND VOUCHERS THAT WE ALWAYS LOOK AT, AND THREE ARE FIELD TRIPS. DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND ON THE CONSENT AGENDA? I'LL MOVE TO APPROVE. I'LL SECOND. I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND. IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? I KNOW THAT THERE ARE CONCERNS IN THE CONSENT AGENDA REGARDING, THE SCHOOL THAT COSTS A LOT OF MONEY FOR STUDENTS, AND I JUST WANTED TO LET PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT WE'RE REQUIRED BY LAW TO FIND AN APPROPRIATE SETTING. AND THE STATE OF WASHINGTON DOESN'T HAVE APPROPRIATE SETTINGS FOR ALL STUDENTS AS A RESULT OF SOME OF THE LAWS OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON HAS. SO SOMETIMES WE'RE REQUIRED TO GO OUTSIDE OF THE STATE. SO I JUST WANTED TO ADD THAT PIECE OF INFORMATION OUT THERE. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. ANY OTHER COMMENTS? SORRY. DIRECTOR SMITH, YOU GOOD UP THERE? I AM GOOD, OKAY. JUST DOING A TOUCH BASE. SO HEARING NO FURTHER DISCUSSION, I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF APPROVING TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED, PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE. AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED SAY NAY, ANY ABSTENTIONS AND THE CONSENT AGENDA IS APPROVED AS PRESENTED. NEXT WE HAVE REPORTS. [12. REPORTS-7:50 pm] JUST ONE REPORT AND PRESENT JUST ONE REPORT THIS EVENING, THE BUSINESS AND FINANCE REPORT WELCOMING FORWARD EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS AND FINANCE LYDIA SELLIE, WHO WILL PRESENT THE JULY 2024 FINANCIALS. OKAY. WE'RE IN THE HOME STRETCH FOR 23-24, EVEN THOUGH IT'S ALMOST OCTOBER, I KNOW. [00:45:02] SO LOOKING TO THIS FIRST SLIDE A GENERAL FUND BALANCE FUND BALANCE IS IMPROVED. AND IT'S PREDOMINANTLY BECAUSE OF OUR SAFETY NET AWARD, WHICH I WILL MENTION ON ANOTHER SLIDE. AND AGAIN IT'S EARLY. THERE'S STILL A LOT OF TRANSACTIONS THAT NEED TO HAPPEN TO RECORD BACK TO AUGUST 31ST. SO I AM CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC ABOUT YEAR END FUND BALANCE. ONE OF THE STATE RULES IS THAT WE CAN'T OVERSPEND WHAT THE BUDGET THAT THE BOARD HAS APPROVED. AND THIS REPORT TAKES ACTUAL EXPENDITURES, WHICH IS THE RULE, AND COMBINES THEM WITH PROJECTED EXPENDITURES WHICH HAVE NOT HAPPENED. THEY MAY NOT HAPPEN OR THEY MAY NOT HAPPEN BY THE END OF AUGUST. SO I JUST WANT TO LET YOU KNOW THAT CAPITAL PROJECTS FUND WILL NOT BE OVERSPENT AT AUGUST 31ST. CAPITAL PROJECTS, YOU HAVE TO TAKE A MULTI YEAR PLAN AND CAPTURE IT IN THE F195 THE ONE YEAR BUDGET DOCUMENT. IT DOESN'T WORK VERY WELL FOR CAPITAL PROJECTS. SO THEY WILL NOT BE OVERSPENT AT THE END OF THE YEAR. REMEMBER, IT'S HARD TO REMEMBER, IT'S BEEN A YEAR ALREADY THAT THE JULY REPORT WAS WHEN WE WERE UNDERGOING THE SKYWARD CONVERSION TO THE CUMULATIVE PRODUCT, AND WE WERE UNABLE TO OBTAIN ENCUMBRANCE DATA FOR THE JULY REPORT A YEAR AGO. SO THIS REPORT IS NOT APPLES TO APPLES BECAUSE OF LAST JULY. ON REVENUES JUST A REMINDER THAT WE DID A RECERTIFICATION LAST FALL FOR OUR 2024 CALENDAR YEAR LEVY. WE WILL BE GETTING DATA HERE IN THE NEXT MONTH TO SEE IF WE NEED TO DO ANOTHER TRUE UP TO WHAT THE COUNTY SAYS TO LEVY IN TAXES. WE ALSO HAVE EXCEEDED OUR REVENUE BUDGET BY TUITION IN THE DHH PROGRAM. AND THEN IF YOU LOOK AT THE OTHER REVENUES COLUMN, WHICH IS HIGHER THAN BUDGET, IT'S BECAUSE WE HAVE THE PUGET SOUND TAXPAYER ACCOUNTABILITY GRANT, EARLY CHILDHOOD GRANT, AND THE FAMILY RESOURCE ADVOCATE GRANTS. ONE OF THE CHALLENGES ON TRAVEL, BUDGETING TRAVEL IS WE BUDGET THAT TRAVEL THAT IS CHARGED TO BASIC ED. IF SOMEONE SAYS. OH, WE'RE GOING TO DO A FIELD TRIP AND WE'VE GOT THIS FUNDING SOURCE FOR THE FIELD TRIP, WE DON'T KNOW THAT FUNDING SOURCE EXISTED OR THAT THEY WERE GOING TO DO A FIELD TRIP. YOU KNOW, A GOOD 15 MONTHS BEFORE IT HAPPENED. SO THAT'S WHY THAT TRAVEL BUDGET ALWAYS APPEARS OVERSPENT. IT'S A LITTLE BIT TRICKY TO PUT IT IN THE RIGHT PLACE. IN BOTH REVENUES AND EXPENDITURES IF WE HAD THE JANUARY 15TH FREEZE EVENT, PARTICULARLY CLASSROOMS WERE DAMAGED AT MEADOWDALE ELEMENTARY, AS WELL AS SOME DAMAGE AT SOME OTHER SITES. THE DAMAGE HAS BEEN REPAIRED AND INSURANCE RECOVERIES ARE PAYING FOR THAT, BUT THERE ARE ALSO AN INCREASE IN EXPENDITURES AS A RESULT OF THAT, THAT DAMAGE. SO AGAIN, THE MAIN REASON THAT FUND BALANCE IS HIGHER IS BECAUSE OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION SAFETY NET AWARD IS $1.8 MILLION ABOVE WHAT WE BUDGETED, WHICH IS VERY IMPRESSIVE WORK BY THAT SPECIAL EDUCATION TEAM. SO KUDOS TO THEM. AND I JUST WANT TO AS LYDIA SWITCHES TO OUR NEXT SLIDE, CALL THAT IT AGAIN AND ECHO THAT THIS IS A TEAM THAT'S WORKING VERY HARD TO MAXIMIZE THOSE POTENTIAL REVENUES TO THE DISTRICT. WE HAVE TO APPLY WHEN A STUDENT COSTS A CERTAIN AMOUNT OVER THE THRESHOLD OF WHAT WE ARE PROVIDED FOR SPECIAL ED, THAT TAKES HARD WORK FROM THE TEACHER LEVEL. THOSE IEPS HAVE TO BE ABSOLUTE PERFECTION. IT TAKES HARD WORK FROM THE TEAM THAT REVIEWS THEM, FROM THE FISCAL TEAM, WHICH IS TELLING THEM WHICH IEPS WILL BE COVERED UNDER SAFETY NET. SO THEY REALLY HAVE WORKED VERY HARD OVER THE LAST PERIOD OF ABOUT FOUR YEARS TO MAXIMIZE OUR COLLECTIONS FROM THE SAFETY NET. IT'S MONEY WE'RE ALREADY SPENDING. SO TO MAXIMIZE THAT COLLECTION BACK FROM THE STATE FOR THOSE FUNDS. OKAY. AGAIN, EXPENDITURES CORRESPOND. THE INCREASE FOR THE FREEZE EVENT CORRESPOND TO THE AMOUNT OF THE INSURANCE RECOVERY. [00:50:04] AND AGAIN, POINTING OUT THAT TOTAL FUND BALANCE HAS INCREASED SLIGHTLY OVER THE PRIOR MONTH'S REPORT. AND YOU'LL SEE THAT AGAIN ON THIS PARTICULAR GRAPH. SO AGAIN CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC BUT A LOT OF INS AND OUTS, BOTH REVENUES AND EXPENDITURES STILL HAPPENING. AND THEN WE DON'T CHANGE THIS REPORT AFTER OUR LAST ENROLLMENT REPORT FOR THE YEAR WHICH IS JUNE. SO THIS IS THE SAME AS JUNE. HAPPY TO TAKE ANY QUESTIONS. ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS. THANKS FOR KEEPING US SO WELL INFORMED. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK. GOOD REPORT. WE APPRECIATE IT. FOR OUR NEW BUSINESS THIS EVENING WE HAVE A FIRST READING, NO ACTION REQUESTED AT THIS TIME OF A REVISED BOARD POLICY 3205 SEXUAL HARASSMENT OF STUDENTS PROHIBITED. [13. NEW BUSINESS- 8:10 pm] THIS THE POLICY AMENDMENTS HERE ARE IN LINE WITH SOME LEGAL CHANGES THAT ARE COMING AT US. AND SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR POLICY IS IN COMPLIANCE WITH STATE AND FEDERAL GUIDELINES. THIS POLICY IS CONSISTENT WITH THE 2024 TITLE NINE REGULATIONS. SO THERE'S NO ACTION TONIGHT. IT'S JUST A FIRST READING AND A DISCUSSION ITEM. SO IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION ON POLICY 3205 THE REVISED POLICY 3205. I'M REALLY GLAD WE'RE GETTING THIS UPDATED. SO WE HAVE CURRENT LANGUAGE AND IN ALIGNMENT WITH ANY NEW DIRECTIVES THAT ARE COMING FORWARD. AND IT'S JUST INCREASING OUR LEVEL OF AWARENESS AND PROTECTION FOR OUR STUDENTS. SO I APPRECIATE THAT. AND THE WRITTEN COMMENT THAT WE HAD GOTTEN ABOUT THIS BASICALLY SAID THAT THAT THERE'S DEFINITELY IS MAKING THE DEFINITION MORE EXPLICIT AND THEREFORE MORE USEFUL IN TERMS OF PROTECTIONS FOR EVERYBODY. DIRECTOR SMITH, DO YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS? JUST THAT I THINK IT'S GOOD THAT WE'RE UPDATING OUR POLICY. I TOOK A LOOK AT IT. NOTHING BIG JUMPS OUT AT ME OTHER THAN IT'S A, YOU KNOW, A GOOD POLICY UPDATE. SO YEAH, I THINK THAT NOTHING THAT CONCERNS ME AT THIS POINT. OKAY. DO ANY OF THE STUDENTS HAVE ANY COMMENTS ABOUT IT? OKAY. HEARING NO MORE DISCUSSION, I THINK WE CAN GO ON TO OUR LEGISLATIVE UPDATE. [14. LEGISLATIVE UPDATES] I'LL TURN IT OVER TO DIRECTOR CHASE. THANK YOU, DIRECTOR KATIMS. WELL, AS YOU KNOW, WE HAD THIS LAST FRIDAY WAS THE GATHERING GENERAL ASSEMBLY ACROSS THE STATE OF THE WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION I ATTENDED ON FRIDAY. IT WAS. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT STATEWIDE GATHERING TO UPDATE OUR POLICIES SO THAT WE CAN TOGETHER ADVOCATE IN OLYMPIA ON AND DIRECT OUR STRATEGIC ADVOCACY POSITIONS AT THE STATE AND THE FEDERAL LEVEL. WE REVIEWED OVER 50 POLICIES, AND I AM PROUD TO SAY THAT WE WERE ABLE TO STRENGTHEN POSITIONS AROUND THE AMPLE AND EQUITABLE FUNDING OF STAFFING BY ADDING SUBSTITUTES INTO THE LIST OF POSITIONS THAT NEED TO BE FULLY FUNDED, BY DOING A NEW MENTAL HEALTH POSITION FOR STUDENT SUPPORTS, DOING SOME ADVOCATING, STRENGTHENING OUR POSITION ON OPERATING COSTS WITH AMENDMENTS TO THE MATERIAL, SUPPLIES AND OPERATING COSTS POSITIONS, AND A NEW POSITION ON FULLY FUNDING DISTRICT INSURANCE COSTS. AND WE ALSO LET'S SEE WHAT WE DO HAVE A NEW POSITIONS ON ADVANCING EDUCATIONAL EQUITY WITH EVIDENCE BASED LITERACY, AND USING DISAGGREGATED DATA IN BOARD REPORTS, AND ALSO IMPLEMENTING THE AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES WORKGROUP RECOMMENDATIONS, WHICH WAS A POLICY BROUGHT FORWARD BY EMILY WILLIAMS IN SHORELINE. SO WAS A REALLY PLEASED TO SUPPORT THESE POLICIES. AND WHAT WAS SURPRISING HERE IS WE WERE ABLE TO END, NOT SURPRISING, VERY PROUD THAT RATHER THAN A TWO DAY CONFERENCE, IT WAS A ONE DAY CONFERENCE THAT FINISHED UP ON FRIDAY. OTHERWISE, I MAY HAVE BEEN TAPPING IN SOME FELLOW BOARD MEMBERS TO HELP ATTEND THE LONG POLICY DISCUSSION MEETINGS. AND SO THE NEXT STEP IS, IS TO I'LL SUBMIT ALL OF THE POLICY PRIORITIES THAT WE DETERMINED LAST AT OUR LAST MEETING. AND ELECTIONS FOR NEW POSITIONS ARE GOING TO BE OPENING UP OCTOBER 1ST, AND ALL BOARD MEMBERS WILL GET TO VOTE IN THOSE. [00:55:06] AND SO WE'LL BE GETTING SOME INSTRUCTIONS FROM WSSDA ON THAT. SO NEXT UP IN THE CALENDAR IS THE THE POSITION PRIVATIZATIONS IN THE ELECTIONS ARE HAPPENING NOW IN NOVEMBER OR THAT'S OCTOBER NEXT MONTH IN NOVEMBER IS THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE. AND THEN DECEMBER WE TAKE A LITTLE BIT OF BREAK AND JUMP INTO THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION IN JANUARY AND IN PREP FOR THE JANUARY LEGISLATIVE SESSION WE ARE STILL SCHEDULING MEETINGS WITH OUR LEGISLATORS, AND I THINK WE'VE GOT ONE COMING UP IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS. AND ANY QUESTIONS, I REALLY WANT TO THANK YOU FOR GOING TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY. AND IT SOUNDS LIKE IT WAS MUCH LESS CONTENTIOUS THAN LAST YEAR WHICH IT WAS THE TWO FULL DAYS AND IT WENT ON INTO THE EVENING EACH DAY. AND SO WHAT'S NICE ABOUT IT IS IT SEEMS THAT IT'S MUCH MORE FOCUSED AND IT'S FOCUSING ON THE NEEDS, WHICH IS FUNDING. YEAH. THE FUNDING WITH THE BUDGET CRISIS THAT ALL THE STUDENTS, ALL THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE FACING, I THINK THAT HAD A HEIGHTENED AWARENESS OF THE NEED TO SPEAK COLLABORATIVELY AND COLLECTIVELY AND FOCUS ON BUDGET ISSUES. SO YEAH. NO. THAT'S GREAT. YEAH. ALSO, I WANTED TO MENTION WSSDA HAS A STUDENT NETWORK THAT'S GETTING GOING. SO NOW THAT WE HAVE STUDENTS ENGAGED, I KNOW THAT THE MEETINGS ARE COMING UP. AND WSSDA UPDATED THEIR WEBSITE SO IT'S EASIER TO FIND SOME OF THAT INFO. AND WE CAN I CAN SEND THAT LINK DIRECTLY TO OUR STUDENTS THERE AND IF YOU'LL HELP ME REMEMBER, WE'LL SEND YOU THAT LINK IN CASE YOU WANT TO ENGAGE WITH THAT WORK. I DO WANT TO SAY LAST YEAR AT THE WSSDA CONFERENCE, I MET SEVERAL OF THE STUDENT REPS FROM DIFFERENT DISTRICTS. THEY ALL SEEM TO FIND IT TO BE VERY ENLIGHTENING AND EXCITING AND PEOPLE WERE REALLY LISTENING. I CAN TELL YOU THAT WHEN I WAS IN A LARGER SESSION AND WHEN A STUDENT SPOKE, EVERYBODY WAS LIKE REALLY LISTENING AND IN HEIGHTENED AWARENESS BECAUSE IT'S FOR YOU ALL THAT ALL THIS WORK IS GOING ON. SO JUST KEEP THAT IN MIND. YOU KNOW, IF YOU HAVE THE TIME AND ENERGY TO START GETTING INVOLVED AS A STUDENT REP IN THE STUDENT REP NETWORK, IS THAT WHAT IT'S CALLED? ACROSS THE STATE, IT'S STUDENT REPS LIKE YOURSELF WHO ARE ON SCHOOL BOARDS ALL ACROSS DISTRICTS. AND IT WAS INTERESTING BECAUSE THEY SHARED WHAT THEY HAVE IN COMMON AND THE COMMON KINDS OF CONCERNS OR INTERESTS OR IDEAS THAT THEY HAD. AND ALSO, YOU KNOW, THINGS THAT WERE DIFFERENT WHERE SOMEBODY WOULD SAY, I'M DEALING WITH THIS AND THEY WOULD SAY, WELL, THAT'S INTERESTING. WE DIDN'T HAVE THAT. SO ANYWAY, JUST TO GIVE YOU SORT OF A PERSPECTIVE ON THAT WORK SO YOU GET, YOU HEAR WHAT'S GOING ON MORE ACROSS THE STATE ALSO FROM STUDENT PERSPECTIVES. BUT STUDENTS LIKE YOURSELVES WHO ARE VERY INVOLVED. SO ANYWAY, JUST A LITTLE MARKETING FOR GREAT MARKETING. AND JUST REMEMBER THAT OFTEN LAWMAKERS AND DECISION MAKERS GET TIRED OF LISTENING TO US, AND THEY REALLY DO WANT TO HEAR STUDENT VOICE YOUR PERSPECTIVE AND YOUR EXPERIENCES, BECAUSE IT'LL BE YOU'LL HAVE A DIFFERENT, OBVIOUSLY DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE THAN WE DO. SO JUST REMEMBER THAT YOUR VOICES ARE VERY IMPORTANT. ANY OTHER SO NEXT OR BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS. [15. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS] AND WE ALWAYS START WITH STUDENTS. AND I'M GOING TO START WITH AMIN AS SOMEBODY WHO'S DONE THIS BEFORE. SO I'M NOT PUTTING ONE OF OUR NEW STUDENT ADVISORS TO THE YOU KNOW, TEST TO START WITH. YOU'RE WELCOME TO MAKE A COMMENT. IT CAN BE ABOUT SOMETHING HAPPENING AT SCHOOL. IT CAN BE SOMETHING IN RELATIONSHIP TO WHAT'S HAPPENED AT THE MEETING TONIGHT. WHATEVER. OR YOU CAN PASS. IT'S ENTIRELY UP TO YOU, BUT I THOUGHT I'D START WITH OUR EXPERIENCED ONES. YEAH. OF COURSE. SO. HI, GUYS. MY NAME IS AMIN, AND I'M A SENIOR AT MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL. AND JUST A COMMENT ABOUT THIS YEAR. SINCE COVID, OF COURSE, IT HAS BEEN HARD FOR EVERY SINGLE SCHOOL TO COME BACK TO ITS PACE. AND THIS YEAR I REALLY SEE THE DIFFERENCE. I REALLY SEE ALL THE TEACHERS, ALL THE STAFF MEMBERS, EVERYBODY GOING BACK INTO PACE, BACK INTO SCHEDULE. THEY'RE ALREADY LIKE STARTING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WORKS WELL, WHAT DOESN'T. AND SO DOES THE STUDENTS AT THE SCHOOLS. AS A MEMBER OF LIKE, ASB AND OTHER LEADERSHIPS AT SCHOOL, IT'S REALLY COMING, REALLY COMING TOGETHER LIKE, REALLY WELL. SO I REALLY LOVE TO SEE THAT. THANK YOU. VIVIAN. YEAH. SO I'M VIVIAN AND I'M A SENIOR AT MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL. AND I JUST WANTED TO COMMENT ABOUT WE WERE JUST TALKING ABOUT THE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE NETWORK. AND SO I WAS PART OF THAT LAST YEAR, AND IT'S WITH STUDENT BOARD REPS FROM ACROSS THE STATE AND WE MEET ONCE EVERY MONTH. [01:00:01] I'M PRETTY SURE THE FIRST ONE IS COMING UP SOON, AND I THINK IT'S A REALLY GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO SEE, TO EXPAND THE STUDENT VOICE. AND I THINK A BIG PUSH IS TRYING TO GET MORE SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO HAVE THIS HAPPENING, BECAUSE IT'S GREAT AND I'M EXCITED TO BE PART OF THE BOARD AGAIN THIS YEAR. WE'RE EXCITED TO HAVE YOU TOO. SANTIAGO. HI, I'M SANTIAGO, I'M A SENIOR AT LYNNWOOD, AND I JUST WANTED TO UPDATE YOU ALL ON HOW LYNNWOOD IS DOING THIS YEAR. I BELIEVE OUR SPORTS ARE DOING FANTASTIC. OUR GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TEAM IS CURRENTLY ON A WINNING STREAK, AND OUR BOYS TENNIS TEAM IS HAS A 5 3 RECORD. SO HOPEFULLY WE'RE LOOKING TOWARDS ANOTHER WINNING SEASON. ALL OF OUR CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS TSA, FBLA, DECA, THESE ARE DOING REALLY, REALLY WONDERFUL. WE'RE ALL HAVING OUR FIRST MEETINGS AND THINGS LIKE KEY CLUB AND OUR NEW COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS CLUB IS ALSO DOING AMAZING. AND PROMOTION ON THE ANNOUNCEMENTS AND STUFF IS DOING ALSO REALLY GOOD. OUR ASB TEAM THIS YEAR HAS DONE WONDERFULLY WITH MAKING VIDEOS FOR THE YEAR, MAKING PROMOTIONAL POSTS, ETC. SO OVERALL I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS YEAR. THANK YOU. AND WHAT YOU JUST SAID IS REALLY IMPORTANT, SINCE WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO FEEL LIKE THEY BELONG. AND THE THINGS THAT YOU WERE MENTIONING ARE THE KINDS OF THINGS THAT HELP CONNECT KIDS TO THE SCHOOL AND TO OTHER STUDENTS AND GROWNUPS THERE. SO THANK YOU. SCARLETT. HELLO, EVERYONE. MY NAME IS SCARLETT, AND I'M A JUNIOR AT EDMONDS WOODWAY HIGH SCHOOL. THIS IS MY FIRST YEAR AS A BOARD REP, SO I THOUGHT I'D SAY A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MYSELF. I'M A PART OF THE SUPERINTENDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE, WHICH IS WHAT ALSO GOT ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE HERE. AND I'M SO GRATEFUL AND EXCITED TO BE SPENDING MY TIME WITH A BOARD THAT MOVES IN THE SAME DIRECTION AS ME AND HAS THE SAME GOALS AS ME TOWARDS EDUCATION. AND JUST AN UPDATE FROM MY SCHOOL, LIKE SANTIAGO, WE'VE BEEN DOING PRETTY OKAY IN SPORTS. THERE'S A GIRLS VOLLEYBALL VARSITY GAME TONIGHT AT HOME, AND THEN THIS FRIDAY WE ARE PLAYING MEADOWDALE FOR FOOTBALL. SO HOMECOMING IS ALSO OCTOBER 18TH. AND. YEAH. THANK YOU. HI. MY NAME IS AMAYA AND I'M A SENIOR AT MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL. I JUST HAD SOME EXTRA COMMENTS FOR THE STUDENT PRESENTATION EARLIER. I THINK IT'S REALLY AMAZING HOW THEY'RE ABLE TO JUST MAKE GOALS FOR THEMSELVES AND JUST ABLE TO STEP BACK AND SAY, THIS IS WHAT I NEED IN ORDER TO LEARN. LEARNING THAT AT AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LEVEL IS VERY BENEFICIAL, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU GO INTO HIGH SCHOOL. THERE ARE SO MANY STUDENTS WHO DON'T KNOW HOW TO ADVOCATE FOR THEMSELVES AND SAY, THIS IS WHAT I NEED TO LEARN, THIS IS HOW I'M GOING TO BE SUCCESSFUL. SO THAT'S REALLY NICE TO SEE. MOUNTLAKE TERRACE IS DOING PRETTY WELL WITH THEIR FOOTBALL. I'M NOT GOING TO NOT GOING TO SHADE YOU GUYS KIND OF SMOKED YOU, YOU KNOW BUT OUR BLACK STUDENT UNION JUST STARTED. WE JUST GOT THE BALL ROLLING ON PRINCIPAL ADVISORY TEAM AND I. YEAH, THAT'S ABOUT IT. GREAT. THANK YOU. I LOVE HEARING ALL OF A SUDDEN THIS COMPETITION [LAUGHTER]. IT'S VERY CUTE. TATIANA. HI, I'M TATIANA, I'M FROM EDMONDS HEIGHTS AND I'M A JUNIOR. AND I WANTED TO SAY KIND OF BASED OFF OF SOME OF THE STUFF THAT WE SAW TODAY, LIKE FROM THE KIDS ESPECIALLY. IT MADE ME THINK ABOUT, LIKE, HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO HAVE LIKE, SELF MOTIVATION WHEN IT COMES TO LIKE YOUR OWN LEARNING AND LIKE YOUR CHOICES, LIKE, ESPECIALLY IN HIGH SCHOOL. I'VE NOTICED MY SCHOOL DOESN'T REALLY HAVE SPORTS, BUT WE DO HAVE ROBOTICS, AND THAT'S KIND OF OUR SPORT. AND SOMETHING THAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT IN THAT IS THAT LIKE IT IS STUDENT LED AND LIKE OUR TEAM CAPTAIN IS ANOTHER STUDENT. AND SO TO HAVE LIKE KIDS PRACTICING THOSE LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL KIND OF WORKS INTO ALSO LIKE IMPLEMENTING THAT IN HIGH SCHOOL. AND WE'RE TWO WE'RE TWO WEEKS AHEAD ON OUR ROBOT THIS YEAR THAN WE WERE LAST YEAR. AND I THINK THAT THAT COMES FROM BEING ABLE TO AS YOURSELF LIKE, COMPETE LIKE NOT FOR YOUR SCHOOL NECESSARILY, BUT ALSO LIKE FOR YOUR TEAM AND LIKE THE WORK THAT YOU SEE PUT IN FROM YOUR FRIENDS. AND IT BECOMES MORE PERSONAL AND LESS BROAD WHEN YOU REALLY SET THOSE GOALS FOR YOURSELF. AND SO I THINK IT'S REALLY GREAT THAT THEY'RE STARTING THAT IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, BECAUSE THAT KIND OF TRANSFERS OVER TO HIGH SCHOOL AND IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT AND GREAT. SO YEAH, AND MY SCHOOL IS DOING PRETTY GOOD. IT'S JUST GETTING KIND OF STARTED WITH THIS YEAR. AND IT'S A K-12. SO YOU KNOW EVERYONE'S FINDING THEIR CLASSES. THE KINDERGARTNERS KNOW WHERE THEY'RE GOING. AND THAT'S WHAT'S IMPORTANT TO ME IS THAT EVERYONE IS JUST DOING AS WELL AS POSSIBLE AND FINDING THEIR WAY. AND WE HAVE A LOT OF LIKE MENTORSHIP FROM THE OLDER KIDS TO THE YOUNGER KIDS. AND IT'S JUST GOOD TO HAVE THAT CROSSOVER. AND YEAH, SO THAT'S ALL. THANK YOU. AND I DO WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT ONE OF OUR STUDENT ADVISORS LAST YEAR WHO GRADUATED WAS A HUGE ROBOTICS PERSON. SO HE GAVE US THE REGULAR ROBOTICS UPDATE ACROSS EVERYTHING. SO IT'S GOOD WE HAVE SOMEBODY FILLING IN FOR THAT ROLE. [LAUGHTER] DIRECTOR GERRARD. [01:05:05] THANK YOU. I WANT TO THANK FIRST THE STUDENT DIRECTORS FOR JOINING US. I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT YOU'RE HERE AND THAT YOU WILL BRING YOUR VOICE AND YOUR EXPERIENCES TO SHARE WITH US AND YOUR PERSPECTIVES ON THE THINGS THAT WE DISCUSS. A COUPLE OF OTHER APPRECIATIONS FROM TONIGHT. I THOUGHT LIKE HAS ALREADY BEEN MENTIONED BY SOME OF OUR STUDENTS THE GOAL SELECTION IN THE SHERWOOD PLAN IS THAT IS JUST AWESOME. THAT IS WONDERFUL. I ALSO WANTED TO, SAY KUDOS TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED US EARN THE SAFETY NET FUNDING BECAUSE FUNDING IS SUCH A BIG ISSUE. AND THAT'S GREAT TO HAVE THAT. AND I KNOW IT'S A LOT OF WORK, SO I APPRECIATE THAT. TWO OTHER THINGS I WANTED TO MENTION. THERE IS AN ELECTION THIS FALL FOR THE SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION. THE TWO CANDIDATES WILL BE DEBATING IN EDMONDS AT THE EDMONDS CREATIVE ARTS CENTER, OR CENTER FOR THE ARTS ON THURSDAY AT 7 P.M.. SO IF YOU WANT TO HEAR FROM THOSE TWO CANDIDATES FIND THAT ON THE WEBSITE AND GET A TICKET FREE TICKET THROUGH EVENTBRITE. ALSO, RECENTLY I JUST FINISHED READING A BOOK CALLED THE TEACHERS BY ALEXANDRA ROBBINS IN WHICH SHE LOOKED AT THE EXPERIENCES OF PRIMARILY FOCUSED ON THREE TEACHERS IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE COUNTRY IN DIFFERENT LEVELS OR ASSIGNMENTS, AND DID AS WELL AS OTHER SUPPLEMENTAL INTERVIEWS, AND REALLY BROUGHT A CLARITY TO THE DIFFICULTY AND THE DEMANDS THAT ARE MADE ON TEACHERS THESE DAYS. I JUST THINK THAT IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE THINK ABOUT WAYS TO LIMIT SOME OF THE PROBLEMS THAT SHE MENTIONS IN THERE, SOME OF THE DEMANDS FOR TIME FOR THAT, THAT IMPACT THE TEACHER'S ABILITY TO BE PART OF THEIR FAMILY, PART OF THEIR COMMUNITY. THEY STILL DO IT. ALL THOSE NONE OF THEM QUIT BECAUSE THEY ALL LOVE THE KIDS AND THEY ALL LOVE THE WORK. BUT SOMETIMES WE NEED TO BE THINKING ABOUT HOW WE CAN MAKE THIS A MORE SUSTAINABLE PROFESSION. SO I JUST WANTED TO DRAW THAT BOOK TO YOUR ATTENTION. IT'S CALLED THE TEACHERS BY ALEXANDRA ROBBINS. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. DIRECTOR CRAMER. YEAH. SO I WANT TO FOLLOW UP ON JUST A COUPLE OF POINTS MADE BY MY COLLEAGUE HERE. FIRST, ABOUT THE CHALLENGE OF TEACHING. SO MY WIFE HAS BEEN A TEACHER FOR MANY, MANY YEARS, AND SHE TOOK A LEAVE OF ABSENCE THIS YEAR FOR THE YEAR BECAUSE OF THE DEMANDS OF THE TEACHING WERE SO GREAT THAT SHE WAS NOT ABLE TO FEEL LIKE SHE COULD BE AS SUCCESSFUL AS A MOTHER, AS A WIFE, AS A DAUGHTER, AND SHE WANTED TO BE PRESENT FOR HER CHILDREN AND AS WELL AS TO HELP TAKE CARE OF HER PARENTS. DID NOT HAVE THAT CAPACITY LAST YEAR. AND SO MUCH OF THAT AS A RESULT OF AS MR. SCHAEFER. IS THAT RIGHT? YEAH. ATTESTED. YOU'RE SPENDING SO MUCH TIME OUTSIDE OF JUST THE DAY IN THE CLASSROOM BECAUSE YOU DO LOVE THE KIDS AND YOU LOVE THE COMMUNITY AND, YOU KNOW, AND BUT THERE'S A LIMIT. YOU'RE YOUNG. AND SO YOU CAN DO THAT FOR A WHILE. BUT YOU GET TO MY AGE AND IT'S LIKE, OH, GOD, IT'S CRUSHING. SO IT'S A VERY REAL THING. SO I WANTED TO JUST UNDERSCORE THAT POINT BECAUSE IT HITS HOME CLOSELY TO ME. THE OTHER POINT THAT I WANTED TO UNDERSCORE IS, MR. SHAPIRO, YOU BROUGHT UP THE DISTRACTIONS IN THE CLASSROOM WITH THE SCREENS. MR. SHAPIRO YES. AND THAT'S A VERY REAL THING. IT'S A VERY REAL CONCERN. IT DOES TAKE AWAY FROM THE FOCUS THAT KIDS HAVE IN MY SCHOOL. WE HAVE. AND I'M NOT IN THIS DISTRICT. I'M TEACHING AT A DIFFERENT DISTRICT. [01:10:01] THE KIDS HAVE DEVICES, AND FROM TIME TO TIME, THEY'RE REQUIRED TO GET ON THOSE DEVICES TO ACCESS CONTENT. BUT AS SOON AS THAT SCREEN COMES UP, THEIR EYES ARE OFF AND THEIR EARS ARE OFF. AND SO AND THIS IS EARLY ON IN THE SCHOOL YEAR. AND SO THIS IS THE TIME WHERE WE SET ROUTINES AND THINGS LIKE THAT. AND SO YOU REALLY HAVE TO SAY OKAY, ALL SCREENS DOWN, ALL SCREENS DOWN. DO NOT GO ON QUITE YET. EYES UP HERE. EARS, EYES. AND THEN I LOOK AROUND THE CLASSROOM AND SAY, HEY, YOU KNOW, JAMAL OR WHOEVER, YOU KNOW, IT'S LIKE UP HERE. OKAY, NOW WE'RE READY TO GO. AND THIS IS SORT OF GETTING THE ROUTINES DOWN. AND I SEE SOME NODS OF OTHER TEACHERS IN THE CLASS, LIKE, THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE TO DO. ALSO AN I READ ABOUT THIS IN LOS ANGELES, THEY JUST PASSED A LAW BANNING CELL PHONES FROM SCHOOLS. AND I DON'T KNOW IF THE STATE IS GOING THAT DIRECTION, BUT I KNOW THAT WE ARE IN CONTINUED DISCUSSIONS HERE, MOVING IN THAT SAME DIRECTION, BECAUSE IT'S JUST SUCH A TREMENDOUS DISTRACTION FOR THE KIDS, AND IT IS INTERFERING WITH LEARNING, AND IT IS UNHEALTHY FOR OUR KIDS. SO ALL THAT SAID, THANK YOU. ALL THAT SAID, I DO SO MUCH APPRECIATE THE WORK THAT THE SAFETY NET FOLKS HAVE DONE. BECAUSE AS A RESULT OF THAT, WE GET REIMBURSED FOR MASSIVE EXPENSES, LIKE SENDING STUDENTS TO SCHOOLS THAT ARE OUTRAGEOUSLY EXPENSIVE BECAUSE WE HAVE TO. SO THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT WORK. THANK YOU, DIRECTOR SMITH. YEAH, I WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU TO THE SHERWOOD KIDS FOR COMING IN. I ALWAYS LOVE HEARING FROM THE STUDENTS, ESPECIALLY THE LITTLE ONES. THEY ARE ALWAYS FUN. MOST PRESENTATIONS ARE FUN. AND WELCOME OUR STUDENT ADVISORS AS WELL. SORRY I COULDN'T BE THERE. IT'S, YOU KNOW, ALMOST 11 WHERE I'M AT. SO I WANT TO ALSO THANK ALL OF YOU FOR KEEPING THIS MEETING TO A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR ME. I ASSUME YOU DID THAT ON MY BEHALF. BUT OTHER THAN THAT YOU KNOW, I JUST REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THE WORK THE DISTRICT'S DOING. AND WE'RE GETTING STARTED HERE ON A NEW YEAR. SO EVERYONE'S GETTING INTO THEIR ROUTINES, AND I THINK THAT IT'S GOOD THAT AS FAR AS I KNOW, I HAVEN'T SEEN ANY BIG ISSUES COME ACROSS. AND THAT'S REALLY SORT OF THE THING WE HOPE FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR IS THAT EVERYONE CAN SETTLE INTO THE ROUTINE AND GET A YEAR GOING WITHOUT ANY BIG HICCUPS. AND I THINK THAT SUPERINTENDENT MINER AND THE WHOLE DISTRICT HAVE DONE A GOOD JOB OF KEEPING THINGS GOING SMOOTHLY DURING THIS TIME. SO THAT'S ALL I'VE GOT. I'LL HAND IT BACK OVER. THANK YOU. AND DIRECTOR CHASE. WELL, ONE OF THE ADVANTAGES OF GOING FORTH OR ACTUALLY ONE, TWO, THREE FOUR, FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT IS I GET TO REITERATE, I AGREE WITH EXPRESSING THOSE SENTIMENTS MY COLLEAGUES EXPRESSED ON THE I'M VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE GOAL SETTING THAT'S BEEN MODELED AND, AND SHOWN TO US, SOME OF THOSE TOOLS THAT WE CAN USE IN OUR OWN WORK AS WE CONTINUE WORKING ON GOALS SETTINGS. SO THANK YOU, SHERWOOD, FOR SCHOOLING US UP. I ALSO WANT TO MENTION THAT I DO APPRECIATE THE THAI SELECTION OF MY COLLEAGUE, DIRECTOR GERRARD AND I BELIEVE IT'S WE HAVE THE STUDENTS JOINING US AND SO WE HAVE A STUDENT THAI. I WILL ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO NOTICE THE THAI THEME AS EACH BOARD MEETING COMES FORWARD. AND I AM. YES. CHILDREN OF THE WORLD. I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION THIS YEAR, AND I REALLY FEEL THAT WE'VE GOT SOME COLLECTIVE STRENGTH MOVING FORWARD, AS WE ARE ALL FOCUSING ON THE LACK OF ADEQUATE FUNDING THAT WE ARE RECEIVING FROM THE LEGISLATURE. SO. THANK YOU. I'M GOING TO DO SOMETHING I DON'T USUALLY DO, AND THAT IS RESPOND TO SOME OF THE PUBLIC COMMENTS. MR. MOORE, I WATCHED THE VIDEO THAT WAS CREATED AS A RESULT OF THE VISIT OF THE REPORTER WHO CALLED HIMSELF AN AUDITOR. YOU CLAIMED THAT OUR PUBLIC RECORDS OFFICER WAS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND, BUT IN FACT, HE WAS ON THE VIDEO FOR ABOUT HALF THE TIME. NO, NO, THIS IS MY TURN. THIS IS MY TURN. THIS IS TIME FOR BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS. THIS ISN'T AN OPEN FORUM. YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO RESPOND TO IT. THERE IS NO SUPPOSED TO. WE USUALLY DON'T. WE USUALLY RESPOND IN AN EMAIL OR NOT. I'M SAYING I'M DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT. YOU MADE A COMMENT AND I'M LETTING THE COMMUNITY KNOW MY PERSPECTIVE. MY PERSPECTIVE IS I WATCHED THE VIDEO. OUR PUBLIC RECORDS OFFICER WAS ON THE VIDEO FOR ABOUT HALF THE TIME, TRYING TO BE VERY, VERY HELPFUL. [01:15:03] EVERYBODY FROM THE DISTRICT WAS BEING VERY HELPFUL CONSIDERING THAT THIS PERSON WAS FULLY MASKED. AND I DON'T MEAN WITH A SURGICAL MASK, I MEAN WITH A FULL FACE MASK AND A HAT. SO THIS PERSON WAS NOT BEING TRANSPARENT ABOUT HIS IDENTITY. AND I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT IF SOMEONE WALKED IN LIKE THAT, IT WOULD MAKE ME NERVOUS. AND I FELT LIKE OUR STAFF DID A VERY, VERY NICE JOB OF RESPONDING TO HIM WITHOUT THE KIND OF REACTION THAT WAS IMPLIED. JUST MY COMMENT ON THAT. SO, MR. SHAPIRO, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR COMMENT ABOUT OUR GOALS. WE ACTUALLY THIS YEAR, I THINK YOU WEREN'T HERE AT THE LAST BOARD MEETING WHEN WE TALKED ABOUT HAVING ELEVATED THREE OF OUR GOALS TO GIVE THEM FOCUS, AND WE'VE ASTERISKED THEM. YOU WILL SEE MUCH MORE INTENTIONAL WORK IN TERMS OF OUR STUDY SESSIONS ON THE TOPICS OF WHAT WE HAVE ELEVATED AS WE FEEL ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT GOALS. IN TERMS OF SOME OF THE PRACTICES YOU TALK ABOUT, LIKE SPELLING TESTS AND CURSIVE. SO THERE'S A LOT OF RESEARCH IN TEACHING AND LEARNING. IT'S THE SAME AS I DON'T THINK YOU WOULD WANT YOUR DOCTOR TO BE DOING THE SAME PRACTICES THAT WERE DONE ON YOU AS A CHILD, BECAUSE THERE'S A LOT OF RESEARCH IN MEDICINE. THERE'S A LOT OF RESEARCH IN EDUCATION AND TEACHING AND LEARNING. SO WHEN WE TALK ABOUT OUR PHONICS PROGRAM, OUR PHONICS PROGRAM IS TEACHING THE UNDERLYING NEEDED SKILLS, THE FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS THAT GO AS PART OF SPELLING AND LEARNING HOW TO READ. THERE'S A LOT OF INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT IS HOW WHAT BEST TEACHING AND LEARNING IS. AND I JUST ENCOURAGE EVERYBODY TO GO TO THE OSPI WEBSITE AND LOOK AT THE STANDARDS, THE STATE STANDARDS, TO SEE WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS IN TERMS OF, AS YOU SAY, READING, WRITING AND ARITHMETIC, BUT ACROSS ALL THE SUBJECTS. IN TERMS OF HIGHER LEVELS OF MATH, THERE ARE REQUIREMENTS IN TERMS OF NUMBER OF YEARS OF MATH, NUMBER OF YEARS OF SCIENCE LAB WORK, THAT HAS TO BE TAKEN. THE EXPECTATIONS ARE VERY HIGH IN TERMS OF THOSE KINDS OF THINGS. AND LASTLY, JONATHAN, I'D REALLY LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR ENCOURAGING EVERYBODY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ADVOCACY WITH THE STATE. AND TO BETTER UNDERSTAND WHAT IS MEANT WHEN YOU SEE THE WORDS INADEQUATE STATE FUNDING. AND I'M GOING TO USE THAT AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO REMIND THE COMMUNITY OF SOMETHING I MENTIONED EARLIER IN AN EARLIER MEETING THAT ON OCTOBER 23RD, EDMONDS NORTH SHORE AND SHORELINE ARE COLLABORATING ON A FUNDING CRISIS TOWN HALL. IT'S OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. IT'S FREE, BUT WE ASK YOU TO REGISTER SO WE CAN HAVE THE PROPER NUMBER OF SEATING AND HANDOUTS AND EVERYTHING. THERE ARE CURRENTLY TEN STATE LEGISLATORS WHO HAVE COMMITTED TO COMING. THE GOAL IS TO PROVIDE INFORMATION AND PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT THE IMPACTS ON THEIR PARTICULAR SITUATION MAY BE A PARENT OR A STUDENT OR A TEACHER, WHATEVER, IN TERMS OF WHAT THE CURRENT FUNDING SITUATION IS. AND THEN THERE WILL BE TIME FOR EVERYBODY TO GO AND SPEAK WITH THEIR LEGISLATORS ABOUT THE SITUATION, TO MAKE THEIR VOICE HEARD AND TO LEARN MORE. SOME PEOPLE MAY NOT THINK IT'S A CRISIS, BUT IT'S AN INFORMATIONAL TIME. IT'S GOING TO BE AT EDMONDS WOODWAY HIGH SCHOOL, OCTOBER 23RD FROM 6:00 TO 7:30. WE REALLY ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO COME. THAT BEING SAID, NOW I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO DOCTOR MINER. WELL, I JUST REALLY WANT TO BRING US BACK TO OUR STUDENTS TONIGHT AND TO THANK THEM ALL FOR BEING HERE. THIS IS AN INCREDIBLY WELL ROUNDED GROUP OF STUDENTS. I KNOW AT LEAST TWO OF THEM ARE TAKING RUNNING START COURSES THIS YEAR, MAYBE MORE. THEY BELONG TO SO MANY DIFFERENT CLUBS, OBVIOUSLY REPRESENTING DIFFERENT SCHOOLS. I CAN'T WAIT TO LEARN WITH YOU AND FROM YOU THIS YEAR, BOTH IN THE SUPERINTENDENT STUDENT ADVISORY AS WELL AS HERE AS THE YEAR GOES ON, BECAUSE WE REALLY DO APPRECIATE YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS. SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY. AND THIS MEETING, THIS REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING OF THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF DIRECTORS IS ADJOURNED. * This transcript was compiled from uncorrected Closed Captioning.
