A LITTLE UPDATE ON SOME OF THE KEY PERFORMANCE MEASURES AND ACTIONABLE ITEMS THAT WE HAVE BEEN FOCUSING ON AS PART OF OUR PLAN OF WORK, AS WE CALL IT IN CTE, THE FIRST IS INCREASING OUR DUAL CREDIT WITHIN CTE PROGRAMS, CTE DUAL CREDIT OR WHAT USED TO BE KNOWN AS TECHPREP, IS THE MOST ACCESSED COLLEGE CREDIT BEARING OPPORTUNITY WITHIN OUR HIGH SCHOOLS, ROUGHLY 44% OF OUR GRADUATING CLASS IN '23, '24 EARNED CREDIT THROUGH A CTE DUAL CREDIT COURSE. FOR THOSE STUDENTS WHO ARE WHAT WE CALL OUR PATHWAY CONCENTRATORS, THOSE THAT TAKE TWO OR MORE CREDITS IN A PATHWAY, OVER 99% OF THOSE STUDENTS OBTAINED COLLEGE CREDIT THROUGH A CTE COURSE. WE HAVE MULTIPLE PARTNERSHIPS WITH COLLEGES IN OUR REGION, AS YOU CAN SEE, REFLECTED ON SCREEN, AND WE CONTINUE TO WORK WITH THEM TO EXPAND OUR ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR COLLEGE CREDIT. WE CONTINUE TO WORK ON PROVIDING STUDENTS OPPORTUNITIES TO EARN INDUSTRY RECOGNIZED CERTIFICATIONS, CREDENTIALS WHILE THEY'RE IN HIGH SCHOOL THROUGH OUR CTE PROGRAMS. IT'S BEEN A PRIORITY FOR US THAT WE'VE WORKED ON VERY INTENSELY OVER THE PAST FOUR YEARS. AS YOU CAN SEE ON SCREEN IN 2021, WHEN WE FIRST REALLY BEGAN FOCUSING HEAVILY ON THIS. WE HAD 92 INDUSTRY CERTIFICATIONS AWARDED. THIS LAST YEAR, WE HAD OVER 2,600 AWARDED, AND WE CONTINUE TO GROW IN THAT AREA. AS YOU CAN SEE, THESE ARE CREDENTIALS THAT ARE RECOGNIZED BY EMPLOYERS IN VARIOUS INDUSTRIES AS AN AFFIRMATION OF STUDENTS SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE THAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR IN THEIR WORK SETTINGS. AGAIN, WE CONTINUE TO WORK ON THAT AS A PROGRAM. CAREER CONNECTED LEARNING IS ANOTHER AREA THAT WE FOCUS ON HEAVILY. >> WE KNOW FROM OUR STUDENTS, BASED ON THE INFORMATION THEY HAVE SHARED WITH US, THAT THE NUMBER ONE REASON THAT THEY TAKE A CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION COURSE IS BECAUSE THEY WANT TO LEARN ABOUT CAREERS AND OPPORTUNITIES. WE PROVIDE THOSE OPPORTUNITIES IN A COUPLE OF WAYS. ONE IS THROUGH A WEALTH OF CAREER EXPLORATION ACTIVITIES, EVENTS, TOURS TO INDUSTRY, MEETING WITH INDUSTRY PARTNERS. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, WE HAD OVER 3,500 STUDENTS THIS PRIOR YEAR TAKE PART IN THOSE OPPORTUNITIES. WE ALSO HAVE FOCUSED HEAVILY ON INCREASING AND ESTABLISHING A ROBUST PAID INTERNSHIP PROGRAM FOR OUR STUDENTS, WHERE THIS PAST YEAR, WE HAD OVER 100 STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN A PAID INTERNSHIP, EITHER THROUGH SOME MORE OR DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR, AND YOU'LL HAVE A CHANCE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THAT SHORTLY. WE ALSO HAVE MEASURES THAT ARE PART OF OUR ACCOUNTABILITY MEASURES WITH THE STATE AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WITH REGARD TO OUR, AGAIN, WHAT I CALL OUR CONCENTRATORS. THESE ARE STUDENTS WHO COMPLETE TWO OR MORE CREDITS. IN ONE OF OUR CTE PATHWAYS, AND WE ARE MEASURED AROUND A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT AREAS RELATED TO THOSE GROUPS, FINE PRINT ON SCREEN, BUT IN THIS PAST AROUND WITH THE 23/24 COHORT, WE EITHER MET OR EXCEEDED, FOR THE MOST PART, ALL OF THE ACCOUNTABILITY MEASURES. THE ONE AREA THAT WE WERE CLOSE, BUT DIDN'T QUITE MAKE WAS OUR ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS PROFICIENCY. I WILL SAY THAT ONE OF THE REASONS THAT WE ARE STARTING TO SEE IMPROVEMENT IN OUR PERFORMANCE IN THESE AREAS, PARTICULARLY IN THE ACADEMIC AREAS, HAS BEEN THE DISTRICT'S EFFORT TO HAVE ALL STUDENTS SIT FOR THE SBA. [01:05:04] THAT HAS MADE A TREMENDOUS DIFFERENCE FOR US. I GIVE KUDOS TO THE DISTRICT FOR EMPHASIZING STUDENTS TAKING THAT ASSESSMENT. I ALSO SHARE WITH YOU OUR GRADUATION RATE, AND THIS IS PROBABLY MY PROUDEST SLIDE THAT I SHARE ANNUALLY, OUR CTE CONCENTRATORS. AGAIN, THE CLASS OF 23/24, WE HAD OF OUR GRADUATING CLASS, 567 STUDENTS WHO QUALIFIED AS CONCENTRATORS, MEANING THEY COMPLETED TWO OR MORE CREDITS. ONE OF OUR PATHWAYS, THEIR GRADUATION RATE WAS 96.3% AT FOUR YEAR GRADUATION RATE. THAT HIGH RATE TENDS TO BE REFLECTED IN ALL DEMOGRAPHIC AND PROGRAM AREA GROUPS. THAT RESULTED IN, AS I MENTIONED EARLIER, THE NUMBER 1 REASON THAT STUDENTS GO INTO CTE CLASSES BECAUSE THEY WANT TO HAVE EXPOSURE TO CAREERS. THAT CAME DIRECTLY FROM THE DATA GATHERED FROM THE STUDENT ADVISORY. MY TEACHERS, WE HAVE WORKED WITH THEM TO REALLY EMPHASIZE THAT IN ALL OF OUR COURSES. THE OTHER THING THAT WAS DONE, AND WE DID THIS LAST YEAR IS THE ADVISORY ASKED US THE QUESTION, YOU DO ELECT AFFAIRS IN ALL THE HIGH SCHOOLS, BUT YOU REALLY DON'T DO ANYTHING FOR MIDDLE SCHOOLS, AND YOU DON'T PROVIDE ANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARENTS TO SEE YOUR PROGRAMS, AND TO BE ABLE TO TALK TO YOUR INSTRUCTORS AND ASK QUESTIONS. DIRECTOR GARRAD. >> SINCE THE LAST MEETING, I WAS ABLE TO REFEREE MEADOWDALE LYNNWOOD AND MOUNTLAKE TERRACE, AS AN ASSISTANT REFEREE. ENJOYED SEEING ALL THOSE OUR STUDENTS PLAY. TODAY, WE HAD A VISIT WITH DR. MINER TO MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL, AND REALLY APPRECIATED THE STAFF THERE FOR SHARING THEIR TIME, [01:55:01] PARTICULARLY THE PRINCIPAL AND HER ASSISTANTS WHO ALL WERE AVAILABLE TO DISCUSS WITH US AND GUIDE US THROUGH THE SCHOOL. THE MONTH OF OCTOBER IS DISABILITY HISTORY AND AWARENESS MONTH. I JUST WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT THAT BECAUSE A LOT OF TIMES WE TALK ABOUT INCLUSIVE SCHOOLS, AND WE ARE THINKING ABOUT OTHER THINGS BESIDES, NEURODIVERGENCE. THIS WAS THE FOCUS OF THE EQUITY ALLIANCE FOR ACHIEVEMENT MEETING LAST NIGHT. THERE WAS A PRESENTER TALKING ABOUT AUTISM WHO ACTUALLY IS HIMSELF AUTISTIC, AND HE WAS VERY GOOD AT HELPING NEUROTYPICAL PEOPLE, LIKE MYSELF, UNDERSTAND HOW AUTISTIC PEOPLE VIEW THE WORLD, AND WHY THEY WOULD HAVE DIFFERENT RESPONSES IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS. AND SO I THOUGHT THAT WAS A REALLY EXCELLENT PRESENTATION. OTHER THAN THAT, I JUST WANT TO SHOUT OUT ELEMENTARY TEACHERS. I KNOW THEY'RE WORKING HARD DOING ALL THE CONFERENCES WITH PARENTS THIS WEEK, SO I WANT TO THANK THEM. AND THAT'S THE END OF MY COMMENTS. THANK YOU. >> THANK YOU. DIRECTOR KRAMER. >> THANK YOU. IT'S BEEN A LONG EVENING, BUT I JUST WANT TO SAY HOW MUCH I'VE APPRECIATED HEARING FROM PARENTS TONIGHT, AS WELL AS OUR PSC AS SOMEONE WHO'S BEEN IN EDUCATION SINCE I GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE. I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO FOCUS ON HOW WE IMPROVE. WE'RE NOT THERE YET. EVERY TIME THERE'S SOME FAILURE, WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE IT BETTER TO GROW, TO LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKES. I KNOW AS A SCHOOL BOARD, WE ARE 100% COMMITTED TO THAT PROCESS OF GROWTH AND IMPROVEMENT ACROSS THE BOARD AND EVERY ASPECT OF WHAT OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT DOES. FROM THE INDIVIDUAL STUDENT INTERACTIONS TO HOW WE SUPPORT DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES IN OUR COMMUNITY AND HOW WE PROTECT THEM. TO HOW WE SUPPORT THE GROWTH OF ALL OF OUR STAFF IN TERMS OF THEIR OWN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, AND ALSO THE CONTRACTS. IT'S A HUGE DISTRICT WITH LOTS OF DIFFERENT COMPETING INTERESTS, BUT WE ARE FOCUSED ON THE RIGHT THINGS ON MAKING IT BETTER FOR OUR KIDS, FIRST AND FOREMOST, AND THAT MEANS IT'S GOT TO BE BETTER FOR OUR ENTIRE SYSTEM. BEFORE THIS SCHOOL YEAR STARTED, WE ALL KIND OF AGREED TO TRY AND KEEP OUR COMMENTS TO ABOUT A MINUTE AND A HALF, BUT I DO HAVE SOMETHING THAT I WANT TO TALK ABOUT. IT MIGHT TAKE ME A LITTLE BIT LONGER THAN 90 SECONDS THERE. BUT FIRST, I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO OUR TECH STAFF FOR LETTING ME APPEAR HERE OR NOT LET ME, BY MAKING IT POSSIBLE FOR ME TO APPEAR VIA ZOOM. I WASN'T FEELING GREAT THIS WEEK. I'M NOT REALLY SURE IF IT'S A COLD OR IF I'VE JUST BEEN RUNNING MYSELF DOWN SO MUCH THAT I'M JUST EXHAUSTED AND, JUST HAVING A ROUGH GO OVER HERE, BUT EITHER WAY, BEING ABLE TO APPEAR VIA ZOOM ALLOWED ME TO COME IN HERE AND DO THE DISTRICT, WORK ON BEHALF OF THE DISTRICT, SO I REALLY APPRECIATE IT AND THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU THAT MADE THAT HAPPEN. THE THING THAT I WANTED TO TALK ABOUT, THOUGH THAT IS NEAR AND DEAR TO MY HEART RIGHT NOW IS SOMETHING THAT DIRECTOR GARRAD POINTED OUT TO ME EARLIER THIS WEEK WHEN WE WERE SPEAKING. AND THAT IS A BILL IN THE WASHINGTON STATE LEGISLATURE THAT DIED LAST YEAR, BUT MAYBE YOU'LL COME BACK FOR A COMMISSION ON BOYS AND MEN IN WASHINGTON STATE. WE HAVE THESE COMMISSIONS FOR ALL GROUPS. THE REASON THAT I WANT TO MENTION THIS, AND IT'S KIND OF A HARD SELL SOMETIMES BECAUSE PEOPLE THINK WHAT WHAT IS SPECIFIC THAT BOYS AND MEN MAY NEED. BUT WHAT I THINK IS IMPORTANT IS THAT WE'RE ALL HUMANS. WE'RE ALL PEOPLE. WE ALL HAVE WEAKNESSES AND THINGS THAT WE NEED HELP WITH AND PLACES WHERE WE NEED SUPPORT. I WAS LISTENING TO OR I WAS READING AN ARTICLE THE OTHER DAY ABOUT SOME OF THE STRUGGLES THAT YOUNG BOYS ARE HAVING THESE DAYS AND SOMETHING THAT JUMPED OUT AT ME WAS THIS FATHER WHO TOLD THE STORY ABOUT HOW HE WAS WALKING HIS SON THROUGH HIS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AND THEY HAD A WALL THAT WAS DEDICATED TO GETTING WOMEN INTO STEM AND ALL THE WAYS THEY WERE HELPING WOMEN, AND THAT'S FANTASTIC. I THINK THAT IS AMAZING, AND THOSE ARE THINGS WE SHOULD DO. BUT THEN HE SAID, BUT THINK OF IT THROUGH THE EYES OF THAT 10-YEAR-OLD WHO'S WALKING DOWN THE HALLWAY, [02:00:01] AND THERE'S AN ENTIRE WALL FOR ALL THE WAYS THAT WE'RE HELPING GIRLS. BUT WE'RE NOT DOING ANYTHING FOR THE BOYS. HOW WOULD THAT MAKE YOU FEEL? AS ADULTS, WE ARE WE SOMETIMES LOSE SIGHT OF THAT. LIKE ALL OF THIS STUFF IS VERY WELL MEANING, BUT THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD, THAT'S PROBABLY REALLY HARD TO UNDERSTAND. I THINK THAT IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE FOCUS ON SOME OF THE STRUGGLES THAT OUR BOYS ARE HAVING, AND THERE'S A LOT OF THEM. THE FALL BEHIND AT SCHOOL, THERE'S JUST SOME OF THE JOBS THAT TYPICALLY WERE MALE DOMINATED ARE NO LONGER JOBS THAT WE HAVE HERE AND SO HOW DO FIT INTO SOCIETY WHEN WE'VE SET UP A WAY MEN ARE SUPPOSED TO BE AND WHAT THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE AND WHAT THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO DO. THE WORLD IS CHANGING, AND EVERYBODY NEEDS SUPPORTS, MEN, WOMEN, LGBTQ, ALL OF IT. BASICALLY WHAT I'M SAYING IS, I WANT TO GET US AWAY FROM THINKING ABOUT GROUPS THAT NEED SUPPORT AND THINK ABOUT HOW CAN WE SUPPORT EVERYONE? AND SO THAT IS WHY I REALLY THINK THIS IS A GREAT BILL THAT'LL BE IN THE LEGISLATURE, SOMETHING I WILL BE WATCHING. I REALLY HOPE HAS SUCCESS, BECAUSE I THINK THAT THAT WOULD BE A WAY THAT WE CAN HELP SUPPORT THE NEXT GENERATION IN A CHANGING WORLD. THEN THE LAST THING I JUST WANTED TO MENTION REALLY QUICKLY WAS ABOUT JUST HIT ON THE COMMENTS REALLY QUICKLY ABOUT THE LOCKER ROOM SITUATION. I JUST WANTED TO SAY ON THAT THAT I RESPECT ANYONE WHO WANTS TO COME AND TALK TO US ABOUT THAT. YOU WERE TALKING TO THE RON PEOPLE THOUGH.STATE LAW IS VERY, VERY CLEAR. THAT PEOPLE GET TO USE THE LOCK ROOM BASED UPON THEIR GENDER IDENTITY. I KNOW I'M NOT GOING TO SUPPORT A POLICY THAT WOULD GO AGAINST STATE LAW. LEGISLATIVE SESSIONS COMING UP. YOU WANT TO TALK TO SOMEBODY, YOU WANT TO TRY AND GET THAT LAW CHANGED. THEN THEN THINGS COULD BE DIFFERENT. BUT AS OF TODAY, I LIKE RIGHT HERE. AS OF TODAY, I'M GOING TO CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THE STATE LAW, WHICH IS PEOPLE USE THE LOCK ROOMS THAT FIT WITH THEIR GENDER IDENTITY. THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO SAY. FROM SCHOOL BOARD TO MUNICIPAL TO STATEWIDE AND I WAS ABOUT TO SAY FEDERAL, BUT THERE IS THERE ON THE FEDERAL LEVEL THAT THOSE THAT I ENGAGE WITH, AT LEAST. OUR LEGISLATIVE SESSION STARTS JANUARY 12TH, IN CASE ANYBODY'S TRACKING. THAT'S IT. >> THANK YOU. I'LL BE REAL QUICK. BOTH HAVE BEEN REALLY EXCELLENT ONE ONES ON AI, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, WITH A REAL FOCUS ON HOW IS THE DISTRICT HELPING TO TEACH OUR KIDS TO USE IT RESPONSIBLY AND TO USE IT CAREFULLY, AS A TOOL AND AS A RESOURCE, BUT NOT AS A WAY TO TRY TO DO THEIR WORK FOR THEM. JUST HELP THEM GET STARTED AND TO BUILD THE CRITICAL THINKING AND USING REASONING AND PROBLEM SOLVING TO MAKE SURE THAT ANY INFORMATION THEY'RE GETTING FROM AI IS IN FACT, USEFUL AND RELEVANT. SO THAT WAS VERY HOPEFUL. TONIGHT, AND ANNUALLY, WE DO WHAT'S CALLED A BOARD SELF ASSESSMENT, WHICH IS THAT WE AS A GROUP, TAKE AN ASSESSMENT THAT'S PUT TOGETHER BY WAZDA. IT'S BASED ON THE STATE STANDARDS. IT'S VERY MUCH BUILT ON SOME VERY STRONG RESEARCH THAT CONNECTS THE BEHAVIORS OF SCHOOL BOARD DIRECTORS WITH STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT, AND THAT WHEN SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS DEMONSTRATE CERTAIN BEHAVIORS AND ACTIONS. IT CAN LEAD TO HIGHER STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT, AND WHEN THEY DON'T, IT CAN LEAD TO LOWER STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT. WE HAVE DONE THIS FOR FOUR YEARS, WE LOOKED AT THE DATA LONGITUALLY, AND WE SHOWED SOME LOVELY IMPROVEMENT ACROSS THESE FOUR YEARS. IN TERMS OF THE WORK THAT WE'RE DOING ARE COMING TOGETHER, WORKING WELL WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT AND WORKING WITH EACH OTHER AND THE COMMUNITY. HOPEFULLY WE WILL CONTINUE TO SEE THAT IN TERMS OF [02:05:02] STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AND POSITIVE OUTCOMES THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT.
