BUT THE PRIMARY REASON WHY WE'RE HERE IS TO NOT JUST CELEBRATE MOUNTLAKE TERRACE JOURNALISM PROGRAM, BUT AS YOU KNOW, BECAUSE YOU WERE THERE, AS WAS DOCTOR CHASE AND DOCTOR SCHWAB AT THE JANSPA NATIONAL JOURNALISM CONVENTION THAT WAS HELD IN APRIL IN SEATTLE. WE WERE HONORED WITH THE 15TH TIME WE RECEIVED THIS AWARD, 12TH IN A ROW. I DON'T KNOW IF THERE'S SUCH THING AS A 12 PEAT OR NOT, BUT WE'LL TAKE IT. WITH THE FIRST AMENDMENT PRESS FREEDOM AWARD, AND IT'S SPONSORED BY THE JOURNALISM EDUCATION ASSOCIATION, THE NATIONAL SCHOLASTIC PRESS ASSOCIATION, AND THE QUILL AND SCROLL JOURNALISM HONOR SOCIETY AND IT REALLY YOU DO NEED A GOOD JOURNALISM PROGRAM AT YOUR SCHOOL TO BE EVEN ELIGIBLE, BUT IT REALLY IS A COMMUNITY AWARD. AND SO MANY THINGS HAVE TO BE IN PLACE FOR THIS AWARD TO BE EVEN CONSIDERED. IT'S SEVERAL ROUNDS THAT YOU GO THROUGH EACH YEAR OF FILLING OUT ALL KINDS OF FORMS AND PAPERWORK AND ANSWERING QUESTIONS AND IN ONE ON ONE HAND, IT'S KIND OF COOL TO BE ONE OF ABOUT 12 SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTRY THAT GET THIS THIS YEAR. ON THE OTHER HAND, I THINK IT'S REALLY SAD THAT THERE ARE ONLY 12 SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTRY THAT ARE GETTING IT THIS YEAR AND SO I'VE DONE AS MUCH AS I CAN DO ON A LOCAL, STATE AND NATIONAL LEVEL TO MAKE SURE THAT STUDENT RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES ARE ARE UPHELD AND MY STUDENTS, FORTUNATELY, HAVE JUMPED INTO WE HAVE PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST STATE LAWS, AND I'VE BEEN TOLD ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS, THANKS TO THE SCHOOL BOARD, IN PARTICULAR TO DOCTOR SCHWAB AND A GROUP OF STUDENTS WHO WORKED WITH HIM ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO, THAT WE HAVE THE BEST SCHOOL BOARD POLICY FOR PROTECTING STUDENTS PRESS FREEDOMS AND RIGHTS IN THE COUNTRY AND IN FACT IS BEING USED AS A MODEL ALL OVER THE COUNTRY AND SO WITH THAT, THIS IS THE AWARD THAT WE RECEIVED THIS YEAR. [00:05:02] AND AT BOTH THE PHILADELPHIA NATIONAL CONVENTION LAST FALL AND AT THE SEATTLE CONVENTION THIS SPRING, WE HAD PROBABLY CLOSE TO 20 DIFFERENT STUDENTS EARN AWARDS, INCLUDING AS A GROUP AWARD. THE HAWKEYE PRINT NEWSPAPER PLACED IN THE TOP TEN LAST FALL, THE YEARBOOK PLACED IN THE TOP TEN. WE HAD THE OTHER COEDITOR, TRINA PERPETUA PLACED IN THE TOP TEN FOR EDITORIAL LEADERSHIP. AND WE HAD TWO STUDENT PHOTOGRAPHERS PLACE SECOND AND FOURTH IN THE COUNTRY FOR THEIR WORK AS PHOTOJOURNALISTS AND THEN A BUNCH OF OTHER INDIVIDUAL AWARDS THAT ARE KIND OF TOO NUMEROUS TO GO INTO RIGHT NOW. BUT I THINK I PASSED THAT ALONG IN THE NOTES TO THE BOARD. SO HOPEFULLY THOSE STUDENTS CAN ALSO BE RECOGNIZED AT SOME POINT, BUT WE JUST WANT TO THANK THE BOARD FOR YOUR SUPPORT. WE ARE ACTUALLY GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO MARIA GAVIOLA, WHO'S ONE OF OUR GRADUATING SENIORS. WHO BETTER TO HEAR FROM ON THE IMPACT OF THIS PROGRAM THAN OUR THREE YEAR VETERAN, MARIA. ALL RIGHT. HI, EVERYBODY. I'VE BEEN UP HERE A FEW TIMES OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS, BUT FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T KNOW ME, MY NAME IS MARIA GAVIOLA. I'M A SENIOR ON AT MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL, AND I'VE BEEN ON CHILL OUT FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS. I'M JUST A FEW WEEKS AWAY FROM GRADUATING AND HONESTLY, I CAN'T WAIT. BUT AS I LOOK BACK OVER THE LAST FOUR YEARS, I'VE REALIZED THAT WHAT I'M GOING TO MISS MOST IS WITHOUT A DOUBT, MY ROBOTICS TEAM WHEN I FIRST. WHEN I FIRST JOINED CHILL OUT, I DIDN'T REALLY KNOW WHAT I WAS GETTING INTO. I WAS JUST LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO DO AFTER SCHOOL. BUT WHAT I FOUND WAS SO MUCH MORE THAN A HOBBY OR AN EXTRACURRICULAR. JOINING THIS TEAM TURNED OUT TO BE ONE OF THE BEST DECISIONS I'VE EVER MADE. THROUGH ROBOTICS, I MET PEOPLE THAT QUICKLY WENT FROM FACES I PASSED IN THE HALLS WITHOUT A GLANCE TO SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS AS WE SPENT HOURS TOGETHER IN THE SHOP, WORKING THROUGH THE HIGHS AND LOWS, TRYING TO BUILD THE BEST ROBOT WE COULD. WE ALSO FOUND SOMETHING MUCH MORE IMPORTANT. THE FRIENDSHIPS I'VE MADE HERE ARE THE KIND THAT I KNOW I'LL CARRY WITH ME FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. I'M LIKE A LITTLE EMOTIONAL. THIS TEAM HAS ALSO INTRODUCED ME TO A COMMUNITY OF MENTORS AND VOLUNTEERS WHO HAVE INSPIRED ME IN WAYS THAT I NEVER IMAGINED. [00:10:03] THESE ARE PEOPLE WHO CHOSE TO GIVE UP THEIR EVENINGS AND THEIR WEEKENDS NOT BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO, BUT BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE IN US AND THEY WANTED TO HELP US DO WHAT WE LOVE. THEY'VE TAUGHT ME MORE THAN I EVER THOUGHT I'D LEARNED IN HIGH SCHOOL, FROM HOW TO WRITE GRANT PROPOSALS, TO ORGANIZING FUNDRAISERS, TO HOW TO LEAD A TEAM, OR EVEN OPERATE A CNC MACHINE. THAT WAS A LOT OF FUN TO LEARN, BUT I'VE LEARNED SO MUCH FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS, I'VE SERVED AS THE BUSINESS LEAD FOR THIS TEAM, AND IF YOU ASKED ME FOUR YEARS AGO IF THAT WAS SOMETHING I'D EVER BE INTERESTED IN, THERE WOULD BE NO DOUBT IN MY VERY CONFIDENT NO. BUT THAT ROLE HAS TAUGHT ME REAL WORLD SKILLS THAT I KNOW WILL FOLLOW ME WELL INTO MY FUTURE AND INTO COLLEGE AND WHEREVER I GO FROM THERE. THESE EXPERIENCES HAVE HELPED ME FIGURE OUT NOT ONLY WHAT I'M GOOD AT, BUT WHAT I'M PASSIONATE ABOUT TOO. WHAT MAKES CHILL OUT SO SPECIAL ISN'T JUST THE ROBOTS WE BUILT. SO MUCH OF IT IS THE COMMUNITY WE'VE BUILT WITH IT. IT'S THE KIND OF COMMUNITY WHERE YOU CAN JUST BE YOURSELF, WHERE CHALLENGES BECOME OPPORTUNITIES, AND WHERE THERE'S ALWAYS SOMEONE THERE WILLING TO LEND A HAND. IT'S A COMMUNITY THAT TAUGHT ME IT'S OKAY TO FAIL AS LONG AS YOU HAVE. AS LONG AS YOU LEARN SOMETHING AND YOU'RE WILLING TO TRY AGAIN AND IT'S A PLACE THAT HAS SHOWN ME JUST HOW POWERFUL IT IS TO SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO LIFT YOU UP. I ALSO WANT TO GIVE A HUGE THANK YOU TO OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR ALLOWING US TO ACCESS THE PRACTICE FIELD AT FAMS. WITHOUT THAT SPACE, WE WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN ABLE TO BE ANYWHERE NEAR AS SUCCESSFUL AS OUR TEAM HAS BEEN THESE PAST FEW YEARS AND LET'S BE HONEST, WINNING IS HALF THE FUN. SO. SO I'VE BEEN THERE 30 YEARS, AND I'VE SEEN STUDENTS COME THROUGH THIS PROGRAM AND, ENTER INTO HIGHER EDUCATION AND IN PROFESSIONAL TECHNICAL PROGRAMS, AND, THE SKILLS THAT THEY LEARN IN THIS PROGRAM ARE HELP BUILD INTO THE CHARACTER AND THE WAY THEY PRESENT THEMSELVES AT A HIGHER LEVEL THAN, THAN THEY CAN JUST GAIN ON THEIR OWN. SO I APPRECIATE ALL YOUR SUPPORT IN THIS. I'M THE PRESIDENT OF ENGINEERING ON OUR TEAM AND A TWO YEAR MEMBER. WHEN I FIRST JOINED THE TEAM, I DIDN'T EXPECT IT TO BECOME SUCH A HUGE PART OF MY LIFE. I DIDN'T KNOW HOW MANY HOURS I WOULD DEDICATE TO FRC, AND I DIDN'T KNOW HOW MANY AMAZING MEMORIES I WOULD MAKE ON THE TEAM. I JOINED THE TEAM BECAUSE ONE OF MY FRIENDS KEPT BUGGING ME TO COME TO A MEETING AND I SAID, [00:15:07] HEY, WHY NOT? I ENDED UP GOING TO ONE OF THE OFF SEASON EVENTS THAT WE ATTENDED DURING THE FALL, AND ONE SPECIFIC MEMORY FROM THAT EVENT HAS ALWAYS STUCK WITH ME. ONE OF MY MENTORS, SHANE, ASKED ME IF I WANTED TO DRIVE THE ROBOT. AND I KIND OF SHRUGGED AT HIM AND I TOLD HIM I WASN'T SUPER INTERESTED. I DIDN'T IT WASN'T WHAT I WAS ENVISIONING WHEN I JOINED THE TEAM. HOWEVER, HE INSISTED THAT I TRY ANYWAYS ON THE OFF CHANCE THAT I MIGHT ACTUALLY ENJOY IT. THIS MOMENT SPARKED MY INTEREST IN DRIVING THE ROBOT, AND WITHOUT HIM, I WOULDN'T HAVE DECIDED TO TRY AND BECOME THE DRIVER THIS YEAR, WHICH I WAS THE DRIVER THIS PAST YEAR. MOMENTS LIKE THIS HAVE CONSTANTLY OCCURRED DURING MY TIME ON THE TEAM. MY FIRST SEASON, I WAS GIVEN THE RESPONSIBILITY TO DESIGN MY OWN SUBSYSTEM ON THE ROBOT. THIS YEAR, I WAS ELECTED AS THE PRESIDENT OF ENGINEERING AND THE ROBOT DRIVER. EVEN GIVING A SPEECH TODAY IS NOT SOMETHING I TYPICALLY DO ON MY OWN, BUT WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE TEAM PUSHED ME TO DO NEW THINGS. IT'S GIVEN ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE NEW SKILLS AND TRY NEW EXPERIENCES. GIVING THESE OPPORTUNITIES TO EVERY STUDENT IS THE GOAL OF OUR TEAM. WE STRIVE TO UPLIFT EVERY MEMBER OF THE TEAM AND CULTIVATE THEIR GROWTH. WE TEACH MANY SKILLS THAT GO BEYOND THE SCOPE OF ROBOTICS. STUDENTS LEARN TO LEAD PROJECTS, WORK IN TEAMS, MANAGE MONEY, AND MUCH MORE. THEY ALSO LEARN FIELD SPECIFIC SKILLS LIKE ENGINEERING, DESIGN, PROGRAMING, AND MANUFACTURING. BEING A MEMBER OF THE TEAM MEANS THAT YOU HAVE A GROUP OF MENTORS AND PEERS WHO ARE INVESTED IN YOUR SUCCESS AND WILL SUPPORT YOU THROUGHOUT YOUR DEVELOPMENTAL YEARS. THE LESSONS OF FRC EXTEND INTO THE FUTURE AND ADULT LIFE OF EVERY MEMBER. WE OFFER THESE OPPORTUNITIES TO MEMBERS IN A VARIETY OF WAYS. THERE ARE MANY AVAILABLE JOBS ON THE TEAM, LIKE LEADERSHIP POSITIONS OR ENGINEERING ROLES, OR ART POSITIONS FOR GRAPHIC DESIGN POSTERS, BUSINESS POSITIONS AS WELL FOR ACCOUNTING, MANAGING THE MONEY. WE PUSH STUDENTS OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE TO TRY NEW THINGS ALL THE TIME. THESE PAST TWO YEARS, WE'VE PERFORMED WELL ENOUGH TO COMPETE AT THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, AND WE ALSO WON MULTIPLE AWARDS AT LOCAL EVENTS. IN 2024, WE WON THE JUDGES CHOICE AWARD. IT'S BASICALLY AN AWARD WHERE YOU DON'T FIT INTO A SPECIFIC CATEGORY BECAUSE THEY HAVE A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT AWARDS, AND SO THEY NOMINATE YOU FOR THAT AWARD. THE THE HOST OF JUDGES AS WELL AND THEN IN THIS YEAR, WE WON THE GRACIOUS PROFESSIONALISM AWARD, IN LARGE PART FOR OUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE PRACTICE FIELD AT FAMS AND HELPING WITH THE COMMUNITY AT WORLDS. STUDENTS CAN CONNECT WITH OTHER TEAMS AROUND THE WORLD AS WELL AS PROFESSIONAL STEM COMPANIES AND SPONSORSHIPS. BEING A PART OF THESE ACCOMPLISHMENTS HAS BEEN AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITY FOR ME, AND I WILL ALWAYS CHERISH THE MEMORIES OF THESE EVENTS. SITTING AT MY FIRST MEETING WHEN THE ADRENALINE STARTED TO WEAR OFF, I THOUGHT THAT THERE WAS NO POINT IN SHARING IT ALL BECAUSE ALL THE KIDS AROUND ME KNEW SO MUCH MORE THAN I EVER WOULD. BUT AS I CONTINUED TO GO TO MEETINGS, THE TEAM WAS WELCOMING AND SHOWED ME THAT WITH ENOUGH TIME, ANYTHING WAS POSSIBLE AND NOW I FOUND A LEADERSHIP ROLE IN THE TEAM WHERE I HELP OVERSEE OUR OUTREACH, INCLUDING OUR ELEMENTARY ROBOTICS PROGRAM, RECRUITING, AWARDS AND JUDGING, AND OTHER NON ROBOTIC RELATED AFFAIRS. ONE OF MY PERSONAL FAVORITE OUTREACH PROGRAMS THAT WE'VE ENHANCED IN THIS PAST YEAR HAS BEEN OUR FIRST LEGO LEAGUE PROGRAM, OR FLL, WHICH HAS RECRUITED WHICH HAS REACHED 60 STUDENTS IN THE PAST YEAR ACROSS THREE DISTRICT SCHOOLS OAKS ELEMENTARY, WESTGATE ELEMENTARY AND ALDERWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL. OUR GOAL FOR THIS PROGRAM WAS TO HAVE THREE TEAMS OF TEN, ONE IN EACH SCHOOL, BUT DUE TO INCREDIBLE TEAM, BUT DUE TO INCREDIBLE SCHOOL SUPPORT AND ENGAGEMENT, WE STARTED THE SEASON WITH SIX TEAMS, DOUBLE WHAT WE HAD PLANNED FOR. THIS FORCED US TO MAKE CHANGES. WE WORKED WITH THE SCHOOLS TO SECURE THE NEEDED ROOMS FOR THE EXTRA DAYS, AND WROTE A GRANT THAT ACCOUNTED THAT HELPED FOR THE UNACCOUNTED FOR FUNDS. IN DECEMBER, WE HELD A SCRIMMAGE FOR THE YOUNG TEAMS AT OUR FRC PRACTICE FIELD, LOCATED AT THE FORMER ALDERWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL LOCATION, [00:20:01] WITH THE TOP THREE TEAMS MOVING ON TO THE OFFICIAL COMPETITION. THE ALDERWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL TEAM PLACED FOURTH AT THIS COMPETITION, ALLOWING THEM TO MOVE ON TO THE NEXT LEVEL OF REGIONAL COMPETITION. WE CANNOT BE MORE PROUD OF THESE STUDENTS. THIS OPPORTUNITY HAS TAUGHT ME RESPONSIBILITY, TIME AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND GRANT WRITING AND ABOVE ALL, HOW TO MANAGE CHILDREN. I LOOK FORWARD TO CONTINUING THIS PROGRAM IN THE FALL. THE LOCATION PEOPLE HAVE BEEN REFERRING TO AS FAM'S FOR OUR PRACTICE FIELD, WHICH IS ABLE TO HELP SUPPORT NOT ONLY US AND THE MOUNTLAKE TERRACE TEAM, BUT ALSO 30 DIFFERENT TEAMS FROM THE LOCAL AREA WHICH HAVE UTILIZED IT THIS YEAR. OF THE SEVEN TEAMS THAT HELPED BUILD THE FIELD, IN ADDITION, IN ADDITION TO UTILIZING IT, SIX OF THOSE TEAMS ATTENDED THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN HOUSTON THIS YEAR, WITH ALL OF THEM GOING TO PLAYOFFS AND ONE OF THE TEAMS EVENTUALLY WINNING THE ENTIRE COMPETITION. IT HELPS TO PROVIDE THE FIELD, HELPS TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR US TO PRACTICE AND HONE OUR SKILLS, AS WELL AS SUPPORT ROOKIE TEAMS AND OTHER SMALL TEAMS IN LOCAL AREA THAT OTHERWISE WOULD NOT GET THE SUPPORT. NOT ONLY IS THE PRACTICE FIELD A BIG DEAL FOR US, BUT WITHOUT IT, THE LOCAL COMMUNITY WOULD LOSE A CRUCIAL ELEMENT FOR SKILL DEVELOPMENT, AND THE PNW AREA WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO SHINE IN THE WAY IT DOES TODAY. SO HOW DO WE SHIFT AWAY FROM TEACHING FROM THE WHOLE TO TEACHING TO WHAT INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS NEEDS, AND THEN MONITORING HOW THEY'RE DOING THEIR PROGRESS WITH CLASSROOM WORK ASSESSMENTS, I READY? THAT INFORMS INSTRUCTION ALONG THE WAY. WE USE SEVERAL DIFFERENT TYPES OF DATA ASSESSMENTS IN OUR MATH. SO I-READY, WE ARE WE USE I-READY, REALLY WELL IN OUR SCHOOL. WE USE THE PATHWAYS, THE LESSON PATHWAYS. TEACHERS MAKE INSTRUCTIONAL GROUPS BASED ON THE INFORMATION THEY'RE GETTING FROM THEIR WEEKLY LESSONS. SO SBA INTERIM ASSESSMENTS, WHICH PROVIDE ME AND MY STAFF REALLY CLEAR PICTURES OF HOW STUDENTS ARE MAKING GROWTH AND PROGRESS TOWARDS STANDARDS THAT ARE GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS AND THEN WHAT THEY'RE GOING TO BE ASSESSED ON, ON THE SMARTER BALANCED. AND THEN, OF COURSE, EACH SPRING WE TAKE THE SMARTER BALANCED SUMMATIVE TO SEE HOW WELL WE DID THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. SO OUR I-READY, DATA, THIS IS PROGRESS OVER TIME FROM FALL, WINTER AND SPRING. I DO WANT TO POINT OUT KINDERGARTEN DOES NOT TAKE I-READY, IN THE FALL, SO THAT'S WHY YOU DO NOT SEE A FALL SCORE FOR KINDERGARTEN. REALLY PLEASED WITH THE MOST OF OUR GROWTH AND OUR GRADE LEVELS. THE UPWARD TRENDS. AND AGAIN, I MENTIONED OUR TEACHERS ARE WORKING TO ENSURE THAT STUDENTS ARE ENGAGED IN THEIR LESSONS AND THEY'RE FOLLOWING THE MATH PATHWAYS. NOTICE THOUGH, THAT THIRD GRADE DID NOT MAKE AS MUCH GROWTH. WHEN I HAD THOSE RESULTS, I STARTED TO DO A LITTLE MORE INVESTIGATING AND WE ACTUALLY DID MAKE SOME GOOD. WE DID CLOSE SOME GOOD GAPS. SO IN THE MID TO ABOVE AVERAGE RANGE FOR THOSE FROM THAT WINTER TO SPRING, THAT WENT FROM 12% TO 25%. SO IT WAS A GOOD JUMP AND WE CLOSED THE GAP ON THE LOW END FROM 8% TO 6%, BUT WE STILL NEED TO DO SOME MORE WORK AROUND THE STUDENTS IN THE MIDDLE. SO THEN I DUG IN A LITTLE BIT DEEPER AND REALLY NOTICED THAT GEOMETRY AND NUMBERS AND OPERATIONS ARE REALLY AREAS WHERE WE CAN CONTINUE TO DO SOME MORE INTENTIONAL WORK AROUND WHETHER IT'S VOCABULARY, WHETHER IT'S HIGHER ORDER THINKING AND SO MOVING INTO NEXT YEAR I DID SOME CONSULTING WITH OUR TEACHERS. SO REALLY RECENT DATA AND THE LEVERAGE WITH THIS WAS REALLY FOR ME WORKING WITH THE INTERMEDIATE TEACHERS AND HELPING THEM TO UNDERSTAND HOW THE INTERIMS CAN BE USED AS A TOOL FOR THE STUDENTS AND ALSO A TOOL FOR THEMSELVES. SO NOT ONLY DO STUDENTS GET TO PRACTICE AND GET EXPOSURE AND GET COMFORTABLE WITH THE WAY THE ASSESSMENT IS GIVEN, THE TEACHERS USE THE DATA FROM THOSE RESULTS TO THEN SAY, WHERE ARE MY KIDS HITTING THE STANDARDS? SOME OF THE LANGUAGE I PULLED FROM THAT RESOLUTION AND PUT ON THIS SLIDE WAS THAT THE DISTRICT WAS TO FORM A TASK FORCE TO DEVELOP A PLAN THAT WILL LEAD TO A SET OF DISTRICT WIDE GRADING PRACTICES FOR SEVENTH THROUGH 12TH GRADE THAT ARE FAIR, ACCURATE AND STANDARDS BASED AND THOSE WORDS FAIR, ACCURATE AND STANDARDS BASED ARE REALLY WHAT WE TRIED TO CENTER. THIS WORK OF THE TASK FORCE ON THE TASK FORCE WAS GIVEN THE ASSIGNMENT OF DEVELOPING A PURPOSE OF GRADING STATEMENT ADDRESSING THE NEED FOR AN EQUAL INTERVAL GRADING SCALE AND A SYSTEM FOR SEPARATING ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, GRADES AND NONACADEMIC ASPECTS OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE. WE WERE TO GIVE QUARTERLY UPDATES TO THE SCHOOL BOARD, AND CLOSED WITH A SET OF RECOMMENDATIONS PRESENTED TO THE BOARD BY MAY 2025 THAT WOULD LAY OUT A PLAN FOR PHASED IN IMPLEMENTATION. AND I THINK YOU HAVE THE REMOTE. OH DO I. OH MY GOSH. THERE IT IS. THANK YOU, DOCTOR MINER. SO HERE'S SOME OF THE THINGS THAT THE DISTRICT DID TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS LAID OUT IN THE RESOLUTION. WE DID FORM A TASK FORCE THAT MET MONTHLY BEGINNING IN JANUARY 2025 AND WITH THAT GROUP WROTE AND ADOPTED A PURPOSE OF GRADING STATEMENT. WE DID PROVIDE THE BOARD WITH QUARTERLY UPDATES ON PROGRESS OF THE TASK FORCE. WE PROVIDED UPDATES TO THE COMMUNITY THROUGH A PUBLIC FACING WEBSITE, AND DURING THE TASK FORCE MEETINGS, WE CONSIDERED THE NEED FOR AN EQUAL INTERVAL GRADING SCALE AND SYSTEMS FOR SEPARATING ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, GRADES AND NONACADEMIC ASPECTS OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE AND BEFORE I HIT ON THE NEXT BULLET TWO, ANOTHER THING THAT WE DID, AND SOMETHING I'M VERY PROUD ABOUT THIS WORK, IS THAT WE PLANNED MEETINGS IN COLLABORATION WITH AEA AND AEA LEADERSHIP, WHICH WAS A STEP REALLY TOWARD BUILDING TRUST BETWEEN THE DISTRICT AND TEACHERS AND SO AEA WAS A COLLABORATION PARTNER THROUGH THIS PROCESS. ONE LITTLE FUNNY THING THAT I WOULDN'T HAVE REALIZED PRIOR TO BEING IN THIS POSITION IS THAT THE SLIDES THAT YOU'RE SEEING RIGHT NOW WERE ACTUALLY TURNED IN, SUBMITTED TO THE BOARD PRIOR TO THE MAY 21ST MEETING TAKING PLACE. SO SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU SEE IN THE SLIDES ARE KIND OF INDICATIVE OF MY PREDICTIONS, ALMOST OF WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN AT THE MEETING. AND WHEN WE MAKE PREDICTIONS ABOUT ANYTHING LIKE TASK FORCE MEETINGS AND WEATHER IN THE NORTHWEST AND WHATEVER ELSE. IT DON'T ALWAYS GO AS YOU THINK THAT THEY MIGHT. SO THE FINAL BULLET THERE SAYS WE PROVIDED THE BOARD WITH A PLAN FOR PHASED IN IMPLEMENTATION, WHICH WE'LL GET INTO LATER THAT UNFORTUNATELY, WE DO NOT HAVE TODAY. SO I WANTED TO JUST GO OVER A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE MAKEUP OF THE TASK FORCE, JUST TO LET YOU ALL KNOW WHO WE WERE WORKING WITH AND THEN A BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE MEETINGS THAT TOOK PLACE. SO WE HAD 41 TEACHERS ON THE TASK FORCE, SIX BUILDING ADMINISTRATORS, AND I THINK AT LEAST ONE PERSON'S HERE. WE HAD DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION ON THE TASK FORCE. AND THEN YOU CAN SEE THE TEACHERS IS BROKEN DOWN BY GRADE LEVEL BETWEEN MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL AND THEN HERE'S THE I WON'T READ THROUGH ALL OF THIS, BUT YOU CAN SEE THE DISTRIBUTION BY SCHOOL AND BY CONTENT AREA. THROUGH THE MEETINGS, THEY WERE CAREFULLY PLANNED TO EVENTUALLY LEAD TOWARD A THOUGHTFUL RECOMMENDATION. [01:15:05] THE TEAM DID ENGAGE IN MEANINGFUL LEARNING REGARDING GRADING STRUCTURES AND PRACTICES. WE READ CHAPTERS OUT OF THE GRADING FOR EQUITY BOOK. WE HELD DISCUSSIONS WITH SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS WHO HAVE SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTED BUILDING WIDE GRADING PROCEDURES AT THEIR SCHOOL SITES. WITHIN THIS DISTRICT, WE DID, AND THIS IS EXCITING. WE DID APPROVE A SECONDARY PURPOSE OF GRADING STATEMENT. WE DISCUSSED TIMELINES FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF GRADING EXPECTATIONS. WE WILL HAVE SOME RECOMMENDATIONS OF EXPECTATIONS TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE FALL. THAT DID HAPPEN. WE WERE NOT ABLE TO BRING A RECOMMENDED FIVE YEAR PLAN TO CONTINUE THE WORK TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE RESOLUTION, AND WE'LL GET INTO THAT A LITTLE BIT MORE LATER. SO THOSE BULLET POINTS HAVE THE ASTERISK, BECAUSE, AGAIN, WE HADN'T HAD THE MEETING AT THE TIME OF THE SUBMISSION OF THESE SLIDES. SO, AS YOU SAW EARLIER, ONE OF THE TASKS LAID OUT IN THE BOARD'S RESOLUTION WAS TO DEVELOP A PURPOSE OF GRADING STATEMENT FOR SECONDARY AND THIS IS THE PURPOSE OF GRADING STATEMENT THAT THE TASK FORCE WROTE AND APPROVED AND THIS WAS APPROVED BY THE TASK FORCE UNANIMOUSLY TO MOVE FORWARD. SO I WON'T READ THAT TO YOU, BUT I'LL LET YOU TAKE A MOMENT AND READ THROUGH THE SECONDARY PURPOSE OF GRADING STATEMENT. SO THIS IS ONE OF THE FIRST TASKS. WELL, IT'S REALLY THE FIRST CONCRETE PRODUCT THAT WE GOT FROM THE TASK FORCE AND IT WAS VERY INTENTIONAL TO START HERE SO THAT AS THE TASK FORCE MOVED FORWARD, WE WOULD HAVE THIS THIS TOUCHSTONE, THIS REFERENCE TO LOOK BACK ON AND HAVE SOMETHING TO REALLY REFERENCE AS WE MOVE THE WORK FORWARD. I THOUGHT IT WAS IMPORTANT TO CENTER OUR WORK AROUND THIS STATEMENT THAT WAS WRITTEN COLLABORATIVELY SO WE COULD CONTINUE TO MOVE THE WORK FORWARD BASED ON SOMETHING THAT THE GROUP AGREED TO. THAT'S WHY IT'S ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS THAT WE DID. SO AT THE MAY 21ST MEETING, ONE OF THE ITEMS THAT WE HAD ON THE AGENDA TO GO THROUGH WAS GRADING EXPECTATIONS THAT COULD BE PUT INTO PLACE BY THIS FALL AND BY THE END OF THE MEETING, THE TASK FORCE HAD AGREED ON TWO OF TWO EXPECTATIONS THAT COULD BE PUT INTO PLACE IN SEPTEMBER. THE FIRST IS THAT ALL COURSE SYLLABI WILL INCLUDE A LATE WORK AND A RETAKE POLICY AND THAT EXPECTATION PASSED UNANIMOUSLY BY THE TASK FORCE. THE NEXT HAD TO DO WITH THE GRADE BOOK AND HOW IT'S WRITTEN INTO THE SKYWARD GRADING SYSTEM. SO THE TASK FORCE AGREED THAT A MAXIMUM OF SIX GRADEBOOK CATEGORIES FOR INDIVIDUAL COURSES WOULD WOULD BE THE TOP. SO THERE'S A MAXIMUM OF SIX GRADEBOOK CATEGORIES FOR INDIVIDUAL COURSES. WHICH IS TRYING TO THINK OF A GOOD WAY TO DESCRIBE THIS. IT'S AREAS THAT ARE GRADED. SO A TEACHER MIGHT HAVE LIKE A QUIZ CATEGORY, A HOMEWORK CATEGORY, A TEST CATEGORY, LAB CATEGORY. TO KIND OF GIVE YOU AN IDEA AND IN SOME CASES, THERE'S MANY CATEGORIES AND THAT GETS THAT CAN GET COMPLICATED. IN ADDITION TO TOPPING OUT AT SIX CATEGORIES, THE CATEGORIES WILL NEED TO BE DEFINED IN THE COURSE SYLLABUS SO THAT IT'S NOT A MYSTERY WHAT WILL BE THERE AND THERE'LL BE A GENERAL UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT EACH OF THOSE CATEGORIES MEANS. THAT DID NOT HAVE UNANIMOUS CONSENSUS AS IT PASSED, BUT IT WAS AT ABOUT 92%. SO NOW WE'LL NEED TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE FIVE YEAR PLAN. AND BEFORE I START GOING DOWN THIS ROAD, WE RAN THIS TASK FORCE WITH THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS DRAFT FIVE DECISION MAKING POLICY. AND AT THE BEGINNING OF THE FIRST TASK FORCE MEETING, THE TASK FORCE HAD TO DECIDE WHAT THEIR LEVEL OF CONSENSUS FOR MOVING INITIATIVES FORWARD WOULD BE AND THE GROUP DECIDED ON AN 80% CONSENSUS FOR MOVING INITIATIVES, [01:20:06] MOVING RECOMMENDATIONS FORWARD. WHEN WE PRESENTED THE DRAFT OF THE FIVE YEAR PLAN, WE OPENED THIS UP FOR DISCUSSION. EVERYONE HAD A COPY OF IT. THE TEACHERS WERE TASKED FIRST WITH INDIVIDUALLY GOING THROUGH THE FIVE YEAR PLAN, THINKING ABOUT WHAT WORKED, WHAT MAYBE WOULD NEED MORE SUPPORT, WHAT DIDN'T WORK FOR THEM, AND THEY SPENT A SOLID CHUNK OF TIME INDEPENDENTLY GOING THROUGH IT. AND THEN WE STARTED WORKING IN GROUPS. AFTER SOME GROUP WORK, WE HAD A WHOLE GROUP DISCUSSION, AND MEMBERS OF THE TASK FORCE WERE SHARING REALLY GREAT IDEAS FOR WAYS THAT THE FIVE YEAR PLAN COULD BE UPDATED OR CHANGED TO BEST SUPPORT THE TRANSITION TO THOSE FAIR, ACCURATE AND STANDARDS BASED GRADES AS WRITTEN INTO THE RESOLUTION AND AFTER. GOSH, IT WAS PROBABLY A GOOD 20 MINUTES OF DISCUSSION AND SOME REVISION ON THE FLY. WE DID AN INFORMAL QUICK VOTE TO SEE IF WE HAD 80% CONSENSUS TO TAKE A VOTE ON THE FIVE YEAR PLAN, AND IT WAS CLEAR AFTER THAT WE DID NOT. AND DIDN'T FEEL LIKE WE HAD TIME IN THE EVENING TO GET TO THE POINT WHERE WE WOULD BUILD THAT 80% CONSENSUS. SO IT MADE THE DECISION ON THE FLY TO SWITCH INTO LOOKING AT YEAR ONE OF THE FIVE YEAR PLAN. AND IF WE COULD GET 80% CONSENSUS ON YEAR ONE SO WE COULD MOVE FORWARD WITH PUTTING THAT INTO PLACE AND LAUNCHING THAT WORK THIS FALL. WE TOOK ONE FORMAL VOTE AND DIDN'T MAKE THE 80% CONSENSUS. SO WE HAD BROUGHT THE GROUP TOGETHER, HAD MORE DISCUSSION, THINKING ABOUT WHAT WE COULD DO TO GET TO 80%, HOPEFULLY GET PEOPLE TO CHANGE THEIR VOTE. AND AFTER PROBABLY A GOOD TEN MINUTES OF FURTHER DISCUSSION TOOK ANOTHER VOTE AND WE WERE AT 76% CONSENSUS. AND SO THE YEAR ONE RECOMMENDATION UNFORTUNATELY FAILED TO ADVANCE BEYOND THAT SINCE WE DIDN'T MEET THE 80%. BUT. THERE'S A LOT, I THINK THAT WE CAN STILL DO AND THAT WE CAN STILL PUT INTO PLACE TO CONTINUE THIS WORK INTO NEXT YEAR WITH THE SCHOOL BOARD SUPPORT. SO SOME OF THE RECOMMENDATIONS THAT I AM MAKING WOULD BE TO RECONVENE THE TASK FORCE IN THE FALL TO REDEVELOP AND AGREE UPON A LONG TERM PLAN THAT COULD BE IMPLEMENTED AND THE WORK STARTS NEXT YEAR. MY OWN DEPARTMENT IS THE STUDENT LEARNING DEPARTMENT. WE HAD BEEN PLANNING TO FOCUS ON IMPLEMENTING OPTIONAL, BUT I THINK IT'LL BE PRETTY AWESOME. MTS COACHING AROUND SCAFFOLDING AND DEPTH AND COMPLEXITY FOR OUR TEACHERS. WE ALSO ARE GOING TO BE DIVING IN AND LOOKING AT IDENTIFYING PRIORITY STANDARDS FOR DIFFERENT CONTENT AREAS. THAT WILL INCREASE GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF ACADEMIC STANDARDS. AND AGAIN, I THINK START PAVING THIS AVENUE TO HAVE THE FAIR BALANCED AND STANDARDS BASED GRADING. WE'D BE DOING THAT WORK IN CONJUNCTION WITH CONTENT TEACHERS, SMALLER GROUPS, SO THAT WE'D BE FACILITATING THESE CONVERSATIONS TO IDENTIFY PRIORITY STANDARDS IF THEIR MATH STANDARDS WITH MATH TEACHERS, IF THEIR ELA STANDARDS WITH ENGLISH TEACHERS, AND SO ON. STUDENT LEARNING WILL BE SHARING OUT THE APPROVED SECONDARY PURPOSE OF GRADING STATEMENT WITH STAFF AND FAMILIES AND PROMOTING HOW WE CAN CENTER OUR, OR AT LEAST BEGIN TO CENTER OUR GRADING AROUND THAT STATEMENT. WE'LL CONTINUE OUR WORK. I'M VERY HOPEFUL OF THIS. WE'LL CONTINUE OUR WORK WITH AEA AND CONSIDER HOW WE CAN BEST SUPPORT TEACHERS IN MAKING THESE TRANSITIONS AND THAT INCLUDES THINKING ABOUT TIMELY UPDATES OF GRADE BOOKS AND HAVING A RENEWED EMPHASIS ON MEETING THE REQUIREMENTS THAT ARE WRITTEN INTO THE CBA ABOUT CONSISTENT GRADE UPDATES. THE TASK FORCE THEMSELVES WILL BE RECONVENING, WILL RECEIVE ONGOING PROFESSIONAL LEARNING REGARDING GRADING PRACTICES TO BUILD UP A DEPTH OF KNOWLEDGE WITHIN THAT GROUP. [01:25:08] SO AS I'VE BEEN MENTIONING, SOME OF THE PROPOSED WORK WILL BE STARTING BECAUSE IT'S NOT NECESSARILY DIRECTLY CONNECTED TO WHAT WAS THE INITIAL, I GUESS, LANGUAGE IN THE RESOLUTION, BUT WILL SUPPORT THAT WORK AS WE PUT IT INTO PLACE OR AS WE START IT UP. WE WILL ALSO BE ABLE TO WEAVE GRADING PRACTICE INFORMATION INTO PROFESSIONAL LEARNING THAT WE LAUNCH FOR STAFF UP NEXT SCHOOL YEAR. SO THAT CAN BE WOVEN INTO SECONDARY PROFESSIONAL LEARNING. SO THOSE ARE SOME OF THE STEPS THAT I PLAN ON TAKING THAT WE I FEEL ARE COMFORTABLE MOVING FORWARD WITH THAT WOULD SUPPORT THIS WORK BEFORE THE FORMAL RECOMMENDATION GETS PUT INTO PLACE, THAT WOULD HAVE OTHER ITEMS THAT WOULD DIRECTLY IMPACT THE GRADING. SO SOME ADDITIONAL ACTION STEPS THAT I PUT DOWN ON THE SLIDE SHOW BEFORE WE HAD THE MEETING IS THAT WE. AS I MENTIONED, I WILL BE WORKING WITH MY TEAM TO REFOCUS THE TEACHER ON SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT ROLES WITHIN STUDENT LEARNING. SHIFTING THAT TO HELPING FACILITATING CONVERSATIONS WITH TEACHERS TO DEFINE PRIORITY STANDARDS AND SHIFT COACHING TO SUPPORT DIFFERENTIATION INSTRUCTION AND THAT INCLUDES DEPTH AND COMPLEXITY, SCAFFOLDING, AND RIGOROUS INSTRUCTION IN GENERAL. I DO WANT TO MAKE A STRONG PUSH TOWARD STANDARDS FOCUSED INSTRUCTION AT ALL GRADE LEVELS. TO REINTRODUCE CONTENT INTEGRATION INSTRUCTION INSTRUCTIONAL MODELS IN ELEMENTARY WITH A FOCUS ON KNOWLEDGE BUILDING INSTRUCTION. SO WHEN WE WERE THINKING, YOU KNOW, WE'RE WE CAN WEAVE SOCIAL STUDIES INSTRUCTION INTO LITERACY, WEAVE SCIENCE INTO LITERACY HAVE THAT INTEGRATION HAPPENING ACROSS OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, WHICH WILL, ELEMENTARY STUDENTS WILL BECOME MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS EVENTUALLY. WE WANT TO PUSH INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS THAT EXPOSE ALL STUDENTS TO QUALITY TIER ONE INSTRUCTION, AND THAT IS A GOAL SYSTEM WIDE FOR US AS WE FOCUS ON THAT MTS MODEL. AND THIS HAS KIND OF BECOME A SLOGAN FOR ME, BUT I WANT TO ENCOURAGE AND PROMOTE TEACHING AT A PERKY PACE TO ENSURE ALL GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS ARE TAUGHT TO EACH STUDENT, SO THAT WE KNOW THAT TEACHERS ARE KNOWLEDGEABLE OF THE STANDARDS, ARE GOING THROUGH THEIR CURRICULUM, AND ENSURING THAT EACH STUDENT ARE TAUGHT GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS BY THE END OF THE YEAR. JUST AS A SIDE NOTE, I HAD A CONVERSATION RECENTLY WITH SOMEONE WHO I HADN'T SEEN IN ABOUT 15 YEARS WITH SOME OF MY PEERS, AND SHE TURNS EVERYONE AT THE TABLE AND SHE WAS LIKE, YOU KNOW, JASON USED TO BE PERKY, AND I'M LIKE, WE'RE BRINGING PERKY BACK. WE'RE BRINGING PERKY BACK. SO REALLY ENCOURAGING THAT PERKY PACE, TEACHING THROUGH THE STANDARDS. SO WHERE WE'RE HEADING AGAIN WROTE THE SLIDES BEFORE THE MEETING, BUT WE DID. HAVE THE ADOPTION OF THE PURPOSE OF GRADING STATEMENT. THAT'S A CELEBRATION THAT HAPPENED IN APRIL. SHORT TERM AND LONG TERM IMPLEMENTATION PLANS WERE REVIEWED BY THE TASK FORCE, BUT WE'LL RECONVENE IN THE FALL AND WE'LL MOVE FORWARD AT THAT POINT. I'M HOPEFUL OPTIMISTIC OF THAT. OUR FIVE YEAR PLAN WAS REVISED IN MAY. WE'LL NEED TO REVISIT IT IN THE FALL. WE DID NOT GET TO THE BOARD REVIEW OF RECOMMENDATIONS IN THE FIVE YEAR PLAN. OUTSIDE OF THE 25-26 EXPECTATIONS THAT I ALREADY DISCUSSED WE WILL BE ABLE TO BEGIN PLANNING SHORT TERM IMPLEMENTATION WITH THE FALL EXPECTATIONS IN JUNE. AND WE WILL. I WILL BE ABLE TO WORK WITH MY TEAM TO REALLY CONSIDER HOW WE'RE GOING TO MOST EFFECTIVELY SUPPORT TEACHERS WITH THE IDENTIFICATION OF PRIORITY STANDARDS AND QUALITY TIER ONE INSTRUCTION. THE LAUNCH OF THE FIVE YEAR PLAN AT THIS POINT IS SLIGHTLY UP IN THE AIR, BUT I'M CONFIDENT THAT IN THE FALL AS THE GROUP RECONVENES, WE'LL COME TOGETHER AND FIND A PATH FORWARD AND PUT THAT INTO PLACE SO THAT WE CAN HAVE THE FORMAL RECOMMENDATION AND CONTINUE THE WORK TOWARD THE ACCURATE AND STANDARDS BASED GRADING PRACTICES. AFTER SOME DISCUSSION AND DEBATE ABOUT WHETHER IT WOULD BE, YOU KNOW, 70, 75, 80 85 WAS SUGGESTED AND THAT WAS THE NUMBER THAT THE GROUP LANDED ON . JUST OUT OF CURIOSITY HOW MANY VOTES IS 6%? I MET A WHOLE BUNCH OF PARENTS OF KIDS THAT OF, YOU KNOW, FRIENDS OF MY OWN DAUGHTER WHO'S THERE? IT'S JUST SUCH A GREAT COMMUNITY, YOU KNOW, BUILDING THING. AND I'M SO GLAD THAT IS NOT GOING TO BE SOMETHING THAT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO LOOK AT DOING AWAY WITH NEXT YEAR, BECAUSE I JUST CANNOT IMAGINE GOING FORWARD WITHOUT SPORTS IN MIDDLE SCHOOLS. I ALSO WANT TO POINT OUT THAT THERE ARE MULTIPLE DISTRICTS THAT ARE THIS YEAR PUTTING IN A POLICY THAT BANS CELL PHONES FROM ALL SCHOOLS AND IN THEIR DISTRICT FROM BELL TO BELL AND INCLUDING MY OWN SCHOOL DISTRICT WHERE I TEACH, WHICH IS SNOHOMISH SCHOOL DISTRICT AND I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE HAVE TO, YOU KNOW, [02:10:01] MAYBE STEP UP OUR EFFORTS ON AS WELL, BECAUSE IT'S THERE'S WAY TOO MUCH RESEARCH OUT THERE THAT TELLS YOU THAT IT'S JUST NOT GOOD TO HAVE THEM IN SCHOOL, PERIOD. WHEN WE WERE IN EXECUTIVE SESSION, WE TALKED ABOUT IT, AND I BROUGHT IT UP, AND I JUST WANTED TO SHOW THE GRAPH TO OUR BOARD MEMBERS HERE. OUR BOYS HAVE CONSISTENTLY BEEN BEHIND OUR GIRLS AT GRAD RATES ANYWHERE FROM FOUR TO, I THINK, UP TO 8% SOME YEARS. THIS IS A THING THAT I DON'T THINK THAT WE REALLY WERE AWARE OF. IT MIRRORS NATIONAL TRENDS. SO IT'S NOT SUPER SURPRISING THAT IT'S HAPPENING HERE, BUT I THINK IT'S SOMETHING THAT WE WEREN'T FULLY AWARE OF. BUT NOW WE ARE AND IT'S DEFINITELY SOMETHING THAT I FEEL LIKE WE NEED TO ADDRESS WHEN WE TALK ABOUT GRAD RATES AND WE TALK ABOUT EQUITY AND WE TALK ABOUT ALL THESE OTHER THINGS WE ARE CLEARLY LEAVING QUITE A FEW OF OUR BOYS BEHIND FOR REASONS THAT I DON'T NECESSARILY KNOW. AND SO I DID SPEAK TO DOCTOR MINER ABOUT THIS, AND I REALLY HAVE PUT THIS SORT OF BACK IN THE DISTRICT'S COURT TO HELP US FIGURE OUT WHY IT IS THAT WE ARE LAGGING IN THIS WAY, BECAUSE THESE TWO GROUPS, FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES, SHOULD BE EQUAL. THEY'RE RANDOM SAMPLINGS. THERE'S NOTHING THAT WOULD STAND OUT TO ME THAT WOULD MAKE ME THINK THAT BOYS SHOULD BE GRADUATING AT A LOWER RATE THAN OUR GIRLS. I ALSO NEVER THOUGHT THAT I'D HAVE THIS HAPPEN, AND TWO OF THEM HAVE LEFT. BUT THREE OF MY FORMER INSTRUCTORS WERE IN THE AUDIENCE TONIGHT. SO THAT WAS WEIRD. BUT HE'S NOT HERE NOW. BUT I DO JUST WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF JOURNALISM AND HOW IF YOU HAD ASKED ME WHEN I GRADUATED, WHAT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I DID IN HIGH SCHOOL WAS, JOURNALISM WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN THE ANSWER. IT WAS A FUN THING THAT I DID, BUT IT TAUGHT ME TO ASK THE TOUGH QUESTIONS, WHICH I NOW DO AS A CAREER. I WAS I REMEMBER LIKE, HAVING TO DO INTERVIEWS WITH TEACHERS OR I'M SURE DOCTOR SCHWAB DOES NOT REMEMBER THIS. BUT DURING THE SMALLER SCHOOLS DEBATE AT MALIK TERRACE, I HAD SOME TOUGH QUESTIONS FOR HIM AND IT WAS THE FIRST TIME, I THINK, IN MY LIFE THAT I TOLD SOMEONE IN A POSITION OF POWER THAT I THOUGHT THEY WERE MAKING A HUGE MISTAKE. AND IT MADE ME, YOU KNOW, IT WASN'T HIS DECISION, BUT HE WAS THE FIGUREHEAD AT THE TIME, AND HE WAS THE PERSON WHO I TOLD YOU WERE MAKING A MISTAKE AND IT PUT ME IN A POSITION WHERE I BECAME COMFORTABLE BEING UNCOMFORTABLE. I HAD TO ASK THOSE QUESTIONS OF PEOPLE AND AGAIN, IT IS A SKILL I USE EVERY DAY. AND THE QUESTION THAT VINCE TOLD US TO ASK EVERYBODY AT THE END OF EVERY INTERVIEW, IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD? AND IT'S SO SIMPLE, BUT EVERY TIME I ASK IT, I THINK OF EVENTS AND I THINK OF THE HAWKEYE AND I THINK OF JOURNALISM. AND SO THERE'S ALWAYS GOING TO BE A SOFT SPOT IN MY HEART FOR, HAWKEYE. AND I JUST LOVE THE WORK THAT THEY DO AND THE LESSONS THAT THE STUDENTS LEARN FROM IT. AND LIKE I SAID, IF YOU HAD ASKED ME AT THE END OF HIGH SCHOOL WHAT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I DID WAS, IT WOULD NOT BE THAT. BUT IT TURNS OUT IN THE ARC OF MY LIFE IT HAS BEEN THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. SO AND THEN THERE WAS JUST ONE MORE THING I WANTED TO SAY HERE. IT OCCURRED TO ME EARLIER THIS WEEK AND THIS IS JUST MORE REFLECTIVE, AND THIS IS DIRECTED TO OUR STUDENTS HERE AND MAYBE ANY OTHER STUDENT WHO MIGHT WATCH A BOARD MEETING, WHICH I HAVE MERCY UPON THEIR SOUL IF THEY'RE WATCHING BOARD MEETINGS. BUT IT'S JUST THIS IDEA THAT. AND I'M I KNOW THAT. SO I'M THE ONLY BOARD MEMBER HERE WHO IS A MILLENNIAL. AND GROWING UP, WE HEARD THAT ALL THE TIME. THEY THINK THEY'RE SPECIAL. THEY'RE DOING THIS. I WROTE DOWN SOME THINGS THAT WE HAVE KILLED. MILLENNIALS HAVE KILLED RELIGION. WE HAVE KILLED MARRIAGE. WE HAVE KILLED MOTORCYCLES, DOORBELLS, SOMEHOW. MAYONNAISE.
