WE ALSO HAVE SOME ACTIVE MEMBERS, AND IN OUR UNIT, WE HAVE 1,350 MEMBERS, 300 OF THEM ARE ACTIVE MEMBERS IN EITHER EDMONDS, SHORELINE, OR NORTHSHORE SCHOOL DISTRICTS.
THOSE ARE THE THREE DISTRICTS THAT OUR UNIT COVERS.
WE HAVE SEVERAL THINGS THAT WE DO TO GIVE BACK, AND ONE OF THE THINGS ARE TEACHER GRANTS OR SCHOOL GRANTS.
WE DO UP TO $400, AND THIS LAST FALL, WE GAVE $15,000 TO PEOPLE IN THE THREE SCHOOL DISTRICTS FOR THEM TO USE IN THEIR SCHOOLS, BUY BOOKS, BUY PE EQUIPMENT, WHATEVER.
THEY JUST HAVE TO BE A MEMBER OF OUR ORGANIZATION, WHICH IS ONLY $7 A MONTH, AND THEY GET BACK A GOOD THING FOR IT.
THE SECOND THING WE DO IS WE GIVE MONEY TO AN ORGANIZATION IN EACH SCHOOL DISTRICT THAT DOES SOMETHING FOR KIDS IN NEED.
WE DO $300 IN THE THREE DISTRICTS FOR THAT.
WHAT I'M HERE TODAY FOR IS ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIPS THAT WE GIVE TO GRADUATING SENIORS.
I'M CO-SCHOLARSHIP CHAIRMAN OF OUR UNIT, AND WE GIVE $2,500 SCHOLARSHIPS TO FOUR STUDENTS.
THIS YEAR, TWO WERE FROM NORTHSHORE, AND TWO WERE FROM EDMONDS.
VERY NICE TO BE HERE TO BE ABLE TO TALK ABOUT THESE TWO WONDERFUL STUDENTS.

FIRST IS KERA CROFT.KERA IS AT EDMONDS-WOODWAY HIGH SCHOOL, AND SHE'S IN THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM, HAS DONE EXCEEDINGLY WELL, AND SHE HAS MADE QUITE A COMMITMENT TO HER STUDIES.
SHE'S GOING TO BE CONTINUING HER EDUCATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT.
SHE'LL MAJOR IN SECONDARY EDUCATION WITH A FOCUS ON ENGLISH.
SHE PARTICIPATES IN THE EDMONDS HEIGHTS PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAM.
SHE HAS HELPED CONTRIBUTE TWO MUSICALS A YEAR.
SHE'S BEEN A LEADER IN RAINBOW GIRLS GIRL SCOUTS, AND SHE'S BEEN PRESIDENT OF THE FRENCH CLUB.
SHE'S A DEVOTED STUDENT AND A COMPASSIONATE PERSON WITH LEADERSHIP ABILITIES, AND HAS DONE A LOT FOR THE COMMUNITY.
THE SECOND PERSON IS COLIN MCGUIRE, AND COLIN GOES TO MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL, AND COLIN HAS BEEN VERY ACTIVE AT MEADOWDALE, AS WELL AS EXCELLING ACADEMICALLY.
HE WANTS TO GO TO THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON, AND HE WANTS TO BE A HISTORY TEACHER LIKE HIS DAD, WHO TEACHES AT MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL.
HE HAS BEEN CAPTAIN OF THE HI-Q TEAM.
HE'S BEEN ASB PRESIDENT, LINK COORDINATOR, CAPTAIN OF THE TENNIS TEAM, AND HE'S COMPETED IN TRACK AND FIELD.
COLIN IS ONE OF THOSE DISTINGUISHED SENIORS THIS YEAR AT MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL, WHO'S DEMONSTRATED LEADERSHIP AND DEDICATION THROUGHOUT HIS FOUR YEARS AT MEADOWDALE.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THESE EXCEPTIONAL YOUNG STUDENTS.

YOU HAVE TO HAVE PERFECT PAPERWORK.

OPEN DOORS, WHICH IS ALSO KNOWN AS DROPOUT RECOVERY, IS 157.
THAT ACTUALLY IS REALLY GOOD NEWS.
THESE ARE STUDENTS WHO THEY'RE NOT SIMPLY CREDIT-DEFICIENT.
THEY HAVE LEFT OUR SYSTEM FOR A YEAR, FOR TWO YEARS, FOR LONGER, AND OUR OPEN DOORS PROGRAM REACHES OUT TO THESE STUDENTS AND HELPS THEM OBTAIN THEIR HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA.

MINER AND ANDI NOFZIGER AND I CO AUTHORED A LETTER THAT WE SENT TO THE GOVERNOR ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF FUNDING ALL THE BILLS THAT ARE SUPPORTING EDUCATION, AND PARTICULARLY THE ONE IN TERMS OF THE LEVY CAP AND THANKS TO INFORMATION THAT I HAD GOTTEN.
IT WAS VERY INTERESTING BECAUSE WE DID NOT KNOW BEFORE THAT HOW MANY DISTRICTS WOULD BE BENEFITING FROM THE RAISING OF THE LEVY CAP.
I HAD THE INFORMATION THAT THERE WERE 70 DISTRICTS.
I DID AN ANALYSIS ON THE 70 DISTRICTS FOR OUR LETTER.
IN THOSE 70 DISTRICTS, THEY RANGED LITERALLY FROM THE SMALLEST TO THE LARGEST.
THERE WERE 16 DISTRICTS THAT HAD LESS THAN 200 KIDS IN THE DISTRICT, AND NINE OF THOSE DISTRICTS HAD MORE THAN 10,000 KIDS.
THEY REPRESENTED 28 COUNTIES OUT OF THE 38 COUNTIES ALL OVER THE STATE.
WITHIN THAT GROUP, IT'S OVER 300,000 KIDS WHO WOULD BENEFIT AND IN THAT GROUP OF 300,000 KIDS, SOMETHING LIKE 39 TO 40% OF THEM ARE LOW INCOME SO THESE

ARE NOT LARGE AFFLUENT DISTRICTS THAT WERE THE ONLY ONES WHO ARE BENEFITING.IT WAS CLEARLY ACROSS THE BOARD, AND ABOUT 13 POINT SOMETHING PERCENT ARE MULTILINGUAL, WHICH IS VERY CLOSE TO THE STATE AVERAGE.
SO PART OF OUR RATIONALE TO THE GOVERNOR WAS, THIS ACTUALLY REPRESENTS BOTH GEOGRAPHICALLY AND DEMOGRAPHICALLY THE STATE. IT ISN'T JUST.
WHAT WAS SO INTERESTING IS I COPIED CHRIS REYKDAL, ON THE LETTER THAT WE SENT, AND HE WROTE US BACK ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AND SAID, THANK YOU TO US FOR WRITING THIS, BUT HE CORRECTED THE NUMBERS.
HE SAID, IT'S MORE LIKE 500,000 KIDS, WHICH IS HALF THE KIDS IN THE STATE, WHO WOULD BENEFIT.
HE ALSO SAID, AND THERE IS LEA MONEY IN THERE FOR DISTRICTS WHO DO NOT HAVE THE LEVY CAP BENEFIT, WHICH I DIDN'T KNOW AND HE GAVE THE NUMBER, WHICH I DON'T REMEMBER OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD.
FOR THOSE WHO WERE VERY CONCERNED AND COMMUNICATED CONCERN ABOUT DISTRICTS NOT ALL BENEFITING, ACTUALLY, THERE IS STUFF IN THERE WHERE EVERYBODY BENEFITS, AND IT'S A MUCH LARGER GROUP WHO BENEFIT FROM THE LEVY CAP AS WELL, SO THERE ARE FEWER THAT THE STATE HAS TO COVER IN TERMS OF THE LEA.
I DON'T PAY THAT MUCH ATTENTION, BUT EVERYBODY WHO ISN'T FORTUNATE TO HAVE A COMMUNITY THAT SUPPORTS US IN TERMS OF GIVING US GOOD LEVY MONEY WILL BE SUPPORTED AS WELL.

ADDITIONALLY, I WENT TO THE STEM EXPO WITH MY ROBOTICS TEAM, AND IT WENT REALLY WELL.
WE REACHED 151 STUDENTS, I BELIEVE, WHICH WAS REALLY NICE, AND WE GOT TO PRESENT TO THE COMMUNITY ABOUT WHAT WE DO AND GET PEOPLE INVOLVED IN FIRST, WHICH WAS REALLY EXCITING, AND SHOW OUR ROBOT.
THEN I ALSO GOT TO MEET OTHER EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT STUDENTS THAT WERE PRESENTING THEIR SCIENCE, THERE BASICALLY THEIR STEM ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND WHAT THEY'RE WORKING ON, AND THAT WAS ALSO A REALLY LOVELY WAY TO MEET OTHER STUDENTS.
ADDITIONALLY, MY SCHOOL THESPIAN BOARDERS HAVING STUDENTS APPLY TO BE ON THE THESPIAN BOARD FOR NEXT YEAR, SO THAT'S REALLY EXCITING.
THEN LASTLY, WE HAVE THE GALA AND PROM COMING UP AT OUR SCHOOL AT THE VERY END OF THIS MONTH.
THAT'S REALLY EXCITING, AND WE'RE JUST GETTING READY FOR THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. THANK YOU.

ALMOST 14% OF OUR STUDENTS ARE ASIAN, ALMOST 1% ARE NATIVE HAWAIIAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER.THIS IS A DIVERSE GROUPING, NOT A MONOLITH, SO THE EXPERIENCES ARE VERY DIFFERENT, AND COMING TO THIS COUNTRY HAS BEEN VERY DIFFERENT.
THE CHINESE EXCLUSION ACT IN 1882, JAPANESE INTERNMENT IN WORLD WAR TWO.
THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF RACISM DIRECTED TOWARDS PEOPLE FROM ASIA.
BUT SINCE 1965, THE IMMIGRATION HAS BEEN ON THE RISE, AND SINCE 2010, IT'S OUTPACED HISPANIC IMMIGRATION TO THIS COUNTRY.
AND IT'S THE ONLY GROUP THAT IS MORE THAN 50% IMMIGRANT.
54% OF THE ASIAN AMERICANS IN THE COUNTRY ARE IMMIGRANTS.
INTERESTING STUFF THAT I WAS FINDING OUT.
JEWISH AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH, AS WELL.
IT'S HARD TO TALK ABOUT JEWISH AMERICAN HERITAGE WITHOUT TALKING ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST, WHICH RAISES IMPORTANT QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT EUROPEANS COULD HAVE DONE TO STOP THE RISE OF NAZISM IN GERMANY, AND ITS ASSAULT ON EUROPE'S JEWS.
QUESTIONS ALSO COULD BE ASKED OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY LIKE THE UNITED STATES.

QUESTIONS OF WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF EDUCATION, AND ARE WE ALL CLEAR ON WHAT THAT PURPOSE OF EDUCATION IS CONSIDERING THAT AI CAN DO A BETTER JOB SYNTHESIZING, AND BETTER JOB WRITING, AND BETTER JOB SUMMARIZING AND DO IT MUCH FASTER THAN MOST GRADUATE STUDENTS.
WE DO HAVE SOME SOUL SEARCHING TO DO AS A NATION, AND WE HAVE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO, AND WE HAVE TO DO IT QUICKLY BEFORE THIS BECOMES THE NEXT CATASTROPHIC EXPERIMENT ON KIDS.
