I'LL TURN IT OVER TO DOCTOR MINER TO INTRODUCE YOU GUYS.
[7. SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS- 7:00 pm]
THANK YOU SO MUCH. WELL, IT IS A NIGHT OF CELEBRATIONS THIS EVENING.AND WE ALSO GET TO HEAR FROM MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL.
WE'RE GOING TO START WITH A STUDENT PRESENTATION ABOUT THEIR INCLUSION PLAN.
HI EVERYBODY. MY NAME IS UMAMA JUNEJO. I'M CURRENTLY THE SECRETARY FOR MARIO HIGH SCHOOL'S ASB.
AND HERE I HAVE WEN MICHAEL AND SHE IS THE JUNIOR SENATOR AND SHE'S ALSO RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT FOR ASB AND THEN WE HAVE CLAIRE, WHO IS A FRESHMAN SENATOR, AND SHE IS GOING TO BE HELPING US PRESENT THIS PRESENTATION.
SO WE'LL BE TALKING ABOUT MĆTODOS INCLUSION PLAN.
AND WE CREATED THIS DURING ASB. SO FOR THE TABLE OF CONTENTS WE WILL GO THROUGH LINK THROUGH LUNCH ACTIVITIES AND TESTING, BLUE CARD AND HIFI FRIDAYS AND CLUBS AVAILABLE.
SO FIRST UP IS LINK CREW AND I WILL HAVE WYN EXPLAIN THAT TO YOU GUYS.
SO LINK CREW IS BASICALLY A MENTORSHIP PROGRAM FOR FRESHMEN WHO ARE COMING INTO OUR SCHOOL, AND IT'S BASICALLY WHERE UPPERCLASSMEN PREPARE OVER THE SUMMER TIME FOR FRESHMEN TO COME IN WITH ACTIVITIES AND JUST A BIG GREETING SO THAT EVERYONE CAN FEEL MORE INCLUDED.
BECAUSE COMING IN FROM MIDDLE SCHOOL AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, IT'S A BIG CHANGE.
IT'S A BIG SHIFT COMING INTO THE HIGH SCHOOL SETTING.
SO IT'S JUST LIKE A WELCOME IN. AND NOT ONLY DO WE DO IT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, BUT THE LINK CREW MEMBERS, WHICH YOU SEE UP IN THE PICTURE, THERE'S A LOT OF US.
SO THE LINK CREW MEMBERS, THEY HAVE SPECIFIC GROUPS THAT THEY HAVE.
SO IT'S LIKE MADE UP OF LIKE MAYBE 6 OR 7 KIDS THAT THEY HAVE AND THEY PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THEM, CHECK IN WITH THEM THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, DO OTHER ACTIVITIES WITH THEM. WE HAVE A POPSICLE SOCIAL FOR THEM.
WE ACTUALLY CALL IT LIKE A POP QUIZ AND LIKE TRICK THEM A LITTLE BIT.
OUR LUNCHTIME ACTIVITIES ARE HOSTED BY LIKE ASB MEMBERS SUCH AS MYSELF AND [INAUDIBLE] AND WE BASICALLY JUST STAND UP ON LIKE THE BIG STAGE AND DO LIKE BINGO, NINTENDO SWITCH TOURNAMENTS. WE'VE DONE THAT BEFORE AND LIKE WE HAD LIKE THE STUDENTS WOULD GO IN FRONT OF EVERYONE OF THE WHOLE SCHOOL AT AN ASSEMBLY,
[00:30:06]
AND THAT WAS FUN AS WELL AND A LOT OF STUDENTS ENJOY AND ALWAYS PARTICIPATE IN DURING OUR THE WEEK LEADING UP TO RUBBER CHICKEN, WHICH IS LIKE A BASKETBALL GAME AGAINST OUR RIVAL, OUR RIVAL SCHOOL.WE HAD LIKE SPECIAL ACTIVITIES DURING LUNCH TIME, AND I FEEL LIKE EVERYONE IS ALWAYS INCLUDED AND JUST LOVES PAYING ATTENTION AND DOING OUR GAMES. AND THEN, YEAH, I'LL SWITCH IT OVER TO BACK TO [INAUDIBLE].
OKAY, SO FOR THE TESTING BLUE CARDS. THIS STARTED WITH OUR SOPHOMORE CENTERS LAST YEAR.
SO THEY CREATED THESE BLUE CARDS WHERE THEY WOULD GO TO EACH TESTING ROOM WITH LIKE SNACKS, PENCILS, DRINKS, WHATEVER THEY WOULD NEED BEFORE A BIG TEST, BASICALLY AND THERE ARE SOME PHOTOS OF THE SOPHOMORE CENTERS AND THE BLUE CARDS.
HIGH-FIVE FRIDAY IS SOMETHING LIKE A BIG TRADITION.
WE DO IT LIKE EVERY FRIDAY BEFORE THE FIRST VOWEL, SO USUALLY LIKE A CLUB OR A TEAM.
HELLO. WE HAVE A LARGE VARIETY OF CLUBS OFFERED AT MEADOWDALE MIDDLE SCHOOL.
EACH ONE PROVIDES INCLUSION AND HAPPINESS FOR THE STUDENTS AND ME PERSONALLY.
WE DO LOTS OF FUN ACTIVITIES AND DIFFERENT FUNDRAISERS FOR SAID CLUBS.
I REALLY LIKE MY CLUB AND YEAH. THANK YOU EVERYBODY.
THANK YOU GUYS. THAT WAS A VERY NICE PRESENTATION.
GAVE US A GOOD FEEL FOR THE CULTURE. I'M WONDERING, ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FROM EITHER OUR STUDENT ADVISORS OR THE OTHER BOARD DIRECTORS? YEAH, I JUST THE BLUE CART. I THINK THAT'S A REALLY GREAT IDEA THAT YOU HAVE.
I KNOW AT OUR SCHOOL A LOT OF TEACHERS KIND OF INDIVIDUALLY DO THAT KIND OF STUFF, BUT I THINK IT'S REALLY GREAT LIKE THAT COMMUNITY AND HAVING IT WITH ASB, AND THAT IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING THAT I'M GOING TO TAKE BACK TO MY SCHOOL TO TRY AND IMPLEMENT.
BECAUSE LIKE YOU SAID, PEOPLE ARE STRESSED OUT AND IT'S A GREAT WAY TO SHOW SUPPORT.
YEAH. THANK YOU. IS THERE ANY QUESTIONS? THIS IS NOT A QUESTION.
I THINK THAT'S A GREAT WAY TO ALSO LIKE INVOLVE STUDENTS THAT AREN'T NECESSARILY LIKE ATHLETICALLY ONLY LIKE INTERESTED IN GAME PLAYING AND GET STUDENTS LIKE ON TEAMS TOGETHER THAT USUALLY WOULDN'T INTERACT. SO I JUST THOUGHT IT WAS REALLY POSITIVE WHAT YOU GUYS SAID. AND CLEARLY YOU'RE REALLY DEVOTED TO WHAT YOU TALKED ABOUT. REALLY LOVELY.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU. AND SO I HAVE TO KNOW WHAT WHICH CLUB DO YOU BELONG TO? I DO YEARBOOK, AND I USED TO DO LIKE, TALK INTO THE MIC.
SO PEOPLE WHO ARE LISTENING IN CAN ALSO HEAR.
SO I DO YEARBOOK CLUB, AND I USED TO BE A PART OF AN AUTO TECH CLUB IN THE PAST, BUT NOT ANYMORE.
BUT IT WAS SUPER FUN. AWESOME. THANK YOU. SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I LOVED, PARTICULARLY ABOUT THE CLUBS, IS, AS I WAS READING THE LIST, THERE'S SO MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF CLUBS THAT IT SEEMS LIKE JUST ABOUT ANYBODY CAN FIND COMMUNITY THERE.
WHICH IS, YOU KNOW, WHAT IS GOING TO WORK WITH, INCLUDING PEOPLE, BECAUSE IF THERE'S A LIMITED AMOUNT OF CLUBS AND THERE'S NOT LIKE, I DON'T SEE ANYTHING FOR ME. THEN YOU KNOW, IT'S NOT INCLUDING EVERYONE, BUT JUST SUCH A WIDE VARIETY, WHICH IS SUPER COOL. THANK YOU SO MUCH. YES. AND I JUST I'M REALLY THRILLED BY THE SENSE OF MENTORING AND EXCITEMENT THAT YOU'RE BRINGING TO THE LINKEDIN, THE LINK PROGRAM THAT I THINK THAT WE CAN ALL LEARN FROM WHAT YOU'RE DOING TOO, AND FOSTERING A SENSE OF BELONGING AND ALSO SHARING WHAT WE KNOW WITH OTHERS.
SO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS. DIRECTOR GERRARD DID YOU WANT TO SAY ANYTHING? YES. I JUST THOUGHT THERE WERE SOME REALLY GREAT IDEAS IN THERE, LIKE THE LUNCH ACTIVITIES, THE TESTING BLUE CART AND THE HI FI FRIDAYS. LIKE THOSE ALL SOUND LIKE GREAT IDEAS AND I NEVER HEARD OF A RED CROSS CLUB BEFORE, BUT IT MAKES TOTAL SENSE. SO I JUST REALLY APPRECIATE THE THE VARIETY OF WAYS THAT YOU'RE USING TO ENGAGE AND BUILD COMMUNITY THERE. THANK YOU. SO MY OLDER SON WENT TO MEADOWDALE HIGH, GRADUATED AND I WANT TO SAY THE LAYNE CREW WHEN HE WAS A
[00:35:03]
FRESHMAN WAS REALLY IMPORTANT TO HIM. HIS LINK LEADER, WHO MENTORED HIM BECAUSE HE WAS SHY, AND IT WAS WE WERE NEW TO THE AREA. IT WAS A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF HELPING HIM FEEL LIKE HE BELONGED.AND THEN WHEN HE GOT OLDER, HE WANTED TO BE DOING THE SAME THING FOR OTHERS.
SO I HOPE THAT THERE'S THAT KIND OF CONTINUITY THAT'S GOING ON.
BUT THAT GOES WAY BACK. SO YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN DOING IT A LONG TIME.
I THINK IT'S A REALLY IMPORTANT WAY TO HELP NEW FRESHMEN FEEL CONNECTED.
SO THANK YOU SO MUCH. WE APPRECIATE IT. GREAT WORK GUYS.
THANK YOU. I WILL GO AHEAD AND TURN IT OVER TO THEIR PRINCIPAL FOR AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE ABOUT THEIR CIP PLAN.
GOOD AFTERNOON. IT IS SO GOOD TO BE HERE AND TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL.
I AM THE PROUD PRINCIPAL OF MEADOWDALE. MY NAME IS KIM WHITWORTH.
I AM JOINED TODAY BY ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL DREYER AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ANGUIANO AND THEN YOU GOT TO MEET THREE REPRESENTATIVES OF OUR AMAZING STUDENT LEADERSHIP TEAM. I'M GLAD THAT WE WERE ABLE TO START WITH THE WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT PIECE.
WE KNOW THAT FOR INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY, INTELLECTUAL RISK, STUDENTS HAVE TO FEEL COMFORTABLE.
WE ALSO WANTED TO HAVE A MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION RATE GOAL.
IT'S OUR WAY OF USING TARGETED UNIVERSALISM TO NARROW OUR FOCUS.
DO CYCLES OF INQUIRY, MAKE SURE THAT WHAT WE'RE TRYING.
SO WE ALSO HAVE AN ML GRADUATION GOAL OF 67.2% TO 80% FOR 2025.
SO TO GET THE GRADING PRACTICES AND CREDITS. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE HAD TO DO IS TO MAKE SURE THAT WE WERE VERY CLEAR AMONGST OUR STAFF ABOUT WHAT WE WANT KIDS TO KNOW AND BE ABLE TO DO SO. THAT ESSENTIAL LEARNING TARGET IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE'VE STARTED WORKING ON.
THAT CLARITY OF FOCUS HELPS TEACHERS, HELP STUDENTS, HELPS WITH INTERVENTIONS AND ALL OF THAT.
THE SECOND THING WE DID, BASED ON WHAT WE WERE DOING WITH ESSENTIAL STANDARDS, IS LOOKING AT GRADING PRACTICES, SEEING IF WE CAN FIND SOME COMMON GROUND. WE ALSO USE OUR ESSENTIAL STANDARDS TO GUIDE OUR INTERVENTIONS, AND WE USE THAT AS WELL WHEN WE'RE BUILDING A WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT IN THE CLASSROOM, MOST OF THE ENGAGEMENT, MOST OF THE DISCOURSE THAT YOU'RE GOING TO SEE HAPPENING IN CLASSROOMS IS DIRECTLY CONNECTED TO ESSENTIAL STANDARDS.
WE WERE LOOKING AT DISCIPLINE. WE WERE LOOKING AT ATTENDANCE.
WE LOOKED AT SURVEYS, CLIMATE SURVEYS FOR STUDENT AND STAFF.
WE ALSO LOOKED AT, STATE ASSESSMENTS. WE USED AN ATLAS PROTOCOL AND WE MODIFIED IT A LITTLE BIT.
SO THAT'S HOW WE GOT FROM OUR GRADUATION RATE TO OUR GRADUATION RATE, BECAUSE WHAT WE NOTICED WAS OUR GRADUATION RATE FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS WAS STAYING PRETTY STAGNANT. AND WE KNEW THAT WE NEEDED TO TAKE A LOOK AT THAT.
MORE IMPORTANTLY, WE FOUND THAT OUR GRADUATION RATE WAS ALSO STAGNANT OVER TIME.
IF WE WERE GOING TO BE ABLE TO BE MORE THAN JUST, YOU KNOW, DATA RICH, INFORMATION POOR.
WE KNEW THAT THIS WAS A GROUP OF STUDENTS THAT NEEDED AND DESERVED OUR FOCUS AND ATTENTION.
SO STRATEGIES, ONE OF THE BOTH STUDENTS AND STAFF ARE MONITORING ESSENTIAL STANDARDS AND WE IN NINTH GRADE, BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT THIS IS NOT JUST A 12TH GRADE ISSUE ABOUT GRADUATION.
SO WE'RE STARTING IN NINTH GRADE LOOKING AT GRADUATION RATE, LOOKING AT GRADE, I'M SORRY, LOOKING AT GRADES, LOOKING AT CREDITS EARNED, COMING UP WITH PLANS OF ACTION.
WE IDENTIFIED THE CENTRAL STANDARDS FOR HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL ALIGNMENT.
WE BEGAN TO COME TOGETHER ON COMMON GRADING PRACTICES BASED ON THOSE ESSENTIAL STANDARDS.
SO WHAT IS IT WE WANT KIDS TO KNOW AND BE ABLE TO DO IN ADDITION TO THOSE STANDARDS, ITS BEHAVIOR AS WELL AND WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE REALLY THINKING ABOUT WHAT GRADES REPRESENT AND WHAT THEY MEAN, AND COMING TO SOME UNDERSTANDINGS VERTICALLY AND HORIZONTALLY.
[00:40:06]
WE ALSO KNOW THAT IF WE HAVE THOSE ESSENTIAL STANDARDS IDENTIFIED, THAT'S HELPING WITH OUR MTSS, OUR MULTI-TIERED SYSTEMS OF SUPPORT. SO WITH A STRONG, MULTI-TIERED SYSTEM OF SUPPORT AND IDENTIFIED STANDARDS, WE KNOW THAT OUR TEACHERS CAN INTERVENE FOR MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS AS WELL AS OUR STUDENTS WITH IEPS.WE HAVE TEAMS OF TEACHERS WHO ARE MONITORING STUDENT PROGRESS.
WE ALSO HAVE A LOT OF STAFF WHO ARE COMING IN AND LOOKING AT OUR DATA AND ALSO INTERVENING WITH GROUPS OF KIDS THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE AND INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE AS WELL. I THINK OUR FINAL STRATEGY THAT WE BELIEVE IS REALLY IMPORTANT IS CONSTANT, BRUTAL COMMUNICATION. WE TALK ABOUT WHAT WE VALUE AT MEADOWDALE.
WE VALUE LEARNING, AND WHAT LEARNING IS IN TERMS OF QUANTIFYING ARE THE GRADES THAT WE HAVE.
SO FOR EXAMPLE, WHEN WE HAVE STUDENTS COMING IN FOR DISCIPLINE, WE WILL TALK TO THEM ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED, WHY THEY DID IT, WHAT WOULD BE A BETTER CHOICE, WHAT CAN WE DO TO SUPPORT YOU? BUT WE ALSO PULL UP THEIR GRADES AND WE LOOK AT THEIR ATTENDANCE, AND WE HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH THEM ABOUT HOW IT'S GOING IN SCHOOL, USUALLY WHEN KIDS ARE ENGAGED, AND USUALLY WHEN KIDS ARE FEELING PRETTY GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES ACADEMICALLY, THE BEHAVIOR FOLLOWS THAT. SO WE TRY TO CONNECT THAT ALL TOGETHER FOR OUR STUDENTS WHEN WE'RE TALKING WITH THEM AND IT'S NOT EVEN WHEN THEY'RE IN TROUBLE, IT'S WHEN THEY'RE IN THE HALLWAY. WE'RE GETTING TO KNOW STUDENTS AND WHAT THEIR INTERESTS ARE, AND WE KNOW THEIR GRADES FOR THE MOST PART AS WE'RE WALKING AROUND.
SO WE STOP STUDENTS AND ASK THEM HOW THEY'RE DOING, WHAT'S GOING ON.
I STILL HAVE THAT STRAIGHT A OR HOW'S THAT MATH CLASS GOING? AND WE WANT TO CONTINUE THIS CONSTANT FOCUS AND COMMUNICATION WITH THEM ON GRADES.
ANOTHER THING THAT WE STARTED DOING IS PARENT SQUARE MID-QUARTER REPORTS.
SO WE RUN REPORTS RIGHT BEFORE THE END OF A QUARTER TO FIND OUT WHO MIGHT BE IN DANGER OF FAILING, WHO HAS A D, WHO HAS A FAILING GRADE. WE TAKE THAT LIST AND WE SEND OUT A PARENT SQUARE TO JUST REMIND PARENTS HOW TO GET ON TO PARENT SQUARE, HOW TO GET ON TO CANVAS FOR THEIR KIDS, AND JUST ENCOURAGE THEM TO HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH THEIR CHILDREN WITH THAT INFORMATION UP IN FRONT OF THEM. SO AGAIN, WHEN WE WANT TO MAKE SURE OUR KIDS KNOW IS THAT WE'RE ALWAYS INTERESTED IN LEARNING, WE ALWAYS WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT'S OUR FOCUS AND THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE VALUE.
SO WITH OUR GOALS WE HAVE SEEN SOME CHANGES IN PRACTICE IN THE CLASSROOM. WE'VE BEEN LOOKING AT DISCOURSE STRATEGIES AROUND THOSE ESSENTIAL STANDARDS AND HAVING CONVERSATIONS WITH TEACHERS THAT BEFORE YOU CAN EXPECT KIDS TO HAVE CONVERSATIONS IN CLASS ABOUT LEARNING, YOU'VE GOT TO GIVE THEM AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER.
SO ALONG WITH THE REST OF OUR HIGH SCHOOLS AND THE REST OF OUR SCHOOLS AND OUR DISTRICT, WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON DISCOURSE AS WELL AS THE SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL LEARNING THAT IS CONNECTED TO THAT AND WE'VE STARTED TO SEE SOME OF THESE PRACTICES IN ACTION.
SO WHEN KIM AND DEANNA AND I ARE HAVING CONVERSATIONS AT PRE OBSERVATION CONFERENCES, WE TALK ABOUT.
SO WHAT ENGAGEMENT STRATEGIES WILL YOU USE? WILL YOU BE USING ANY OF THE DISCOURSE STRATEGIES THAT WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON AND WE ALWAYS GIVE TEACHERS FEEDBACK IN THAT AREA AS WELL. SO AGAIN IT'S JUST THIS KEEPING THINGS VERY SIMPLE, KEEPING IT FOCUSED AND MAKING SURE THAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT IT AND CALLING IT OUT AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY THAT WE CAN. SO OUR GOALS, LET'S GET TO THAT.
FOR THE CLASS OF 2025, AFTER THE FIRST SEMESTER, OUR PREDICTED GRADUATION RATE IS 91.78.
SO THAT'S UP FROM THE 86.2 THAT WE WERE AT LAST YEAR.
IN ANALYZING OUR ML DATA, WHAT WE FOUND WAS AFTER THE FIRST SEMESTER, OUR GOAL, OUR GRADUATION PREDICTED GRADUATION RATE WAS ABOUT 68%, WHICH WAS UP FROM THE 65.7, BUT NOWHERE NEAR OUR 80% GOAL THAT WE'D SET FOR OURSELVES.
SO WE SAT DOWN AND WE STARTED LOOKING AT THE STUDENTS WHO WE BELIEVED MIGHT STRUGGLE WITH GETTING TO THAT GRADUATION GOAL AND WE IDENTIFIED 6 OR 7 STUDENTS WHO QUALIFY FOR ML SERVICES AND AS WE STARTED CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS, WE'RE LIKE, IF WE COULD GET THIS SIX ADDITIONAL STUDENTS, MAYBE WE'LL PAD A LITTLE BIT MORE IN THERE JUST IN CASE WE WILL COME AND REACH OUR 80%.
SO WE'RE STILL CONFIDENT THAT EVEN THOUGH IT IS THE 68% AND NOT THE 80% OR EVEN CLOSE.
IN SUMMARY, I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE CONTINUE TO TALK ABOUT WE HAVE A CLARITY OF FOCUS.
[00:45:07]
THE PROGRESS THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE MAKING AND WE BELIEVE THAT IF WE CONTINUE TO DO THIS WORK, WE'RE NOT DONE THIS YEAR PROBABLY WON'T BE DONE NEXT YEAR.THESE ARE AREAS OF FOCUS, AND THESE ARE STRATEGIES THAT WE'RE GOING TO BE CONTINUING TO DO FOR A FEW YEARS, THAT WE'RE GOING TO GET BETTER AND BETTER AT IT.
WE'RE GOING TO BECOME MORE ALIGNED, AND WE'RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO MEET THE NEEDS OF OUR KIDS, WHOEVER THEY ARE, WHEN THEY CROSS THE THRESHOLD OF OUR SCHOOL.
SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR FOR THE TIME, AND I WOULD LOVE TO ANSWER QUESTIONS.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. VERY INFORMATIVE REPORT. APPRECIATE IT.
STUDENT ADVISORS AND OR BOARD DIRECTORS. COMMENTS, QUESTIONS? THE COMMENT THAT I HAD WRITTEN DOWN AND THAT I THOUGHT WAS REALLY NICE WAS WHEN YOU MENTIONED THAT YOU LIKE THAT YOU GUYS APPROACH INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS AND JUST KIND OF ASK THEM, LIKE INDIVIDUALLY ABOUT THEIR GRADES. I THINK THAT THAT MAKES THEM FEEL LIKE YOU CARE FOR THEM, NOT AS JUST A COLLECTIVE NUMBER AND REALLY INDIVIDUALLY AS STUDENTS.
AND I ALSO FEEL LIKE IT PROBABLY TAKES AWAY SOME OF THE FEAR OF LIKE, OH, THAT'S LIKE THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION. LIKE I THINK THAT IT WOULD PROBABLY BE NICE AS WELL AT MY SCHOOL TO LIKE BE JUST APPROACH LIKE THAT AND I REALLY LOVED THAT YOU NOTED ON THAT BECAUSE I THINK IT'S SUPER IMPORTANT.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PRESENTATION. I HAVE JUST A COUPLE OF QUICK THINGS HERE.
SO THIS IS YOUR FIRST YEAR AT MEADOWDALE, RIGHT? YES, SIR.
OKAY. GOOD. THAT KIND OF FITS BECAUSE I CAN SEE THAT YOU HAVE A LOT OF REALLY GOOD PLANS HERE, WHICH I REALLY LIKED TO SEE THAT YOU HAVE A GOAL MOVING FORWARD THAT YOU CAME IN AND YOU KIND OF HIT THE GROUND RUNNING, SO THAT'S GREAT. I'M CURIOUS, SO YOUR GOAL IS 80% AND THIS IS AN HONEST QUESTION.
I REALLY DO NOT KNOW THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION.
WHEN I HEAR YOU SAY, WE ONLY NEED SIX KIDS TO HIT 80%, I THINK SIX KIDS.
THAT DOESN'T SOUND HARD AT ALL. LIKE, DO YOU THINK REALISTICALLY THAT YOU CAN SHOOT PAST THAT IS THAT, YOU KNOW, DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE THE BANDWIDTH AND WHAT YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO SHOOT PAST THAT GOAL THIS YEAR, TO SHOOT PAST IT, KNOWING THAT WE'RE REALLY LOOKING AT SIX KIDS AND WE CARE FOR ALL OF THEM, AND WE ARE FOCUSING ON ALL OF THEM AS MUCH AS WE CAN.
IT'S ATTAINABLE. WE'RE GOING TO GO FOR 85. AWESOME.
WELL THANK YOU, THANK YOU. YOU KNOW, THAT'S THEIR ML GROUP THAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS SMALLER GROUP. SO SIX OUT OF THAT GROUP IS GOING TO BE A SMALLER PERCENTAGE THAN OF THE, YEAH. I WAS JUST CURIOUS.
YEAH. NO. GOOD QUESTION. OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS? HAWK. YEAH. I WAS JUST CURIOUS MORE ABOUT THE NUMBERS.
SO HOW MANY SENIORS DO YOU HAVE ALTOGETHER? ROUGHLY.
OH 300 AND 380. CLOSE TO 400. YEAH. AND OF THOSE.
SO IF YOU HAD THE SIX MORE KIDS FOR THE ML AND YOU CONTINUED TO WORK ON THE OTHER KIDS, LIKE HOW MANY MORE KIDS WOULD YOU NEED TO GET UP TO THE YOU GET 80%. BUT THEN THAT'S ALSO GOING TO BRING UP THE OTHER LEVEL TOO.
YES. SO THAT'S PART OF TARGETED UNIVERSALISM.
IF YOU FOCUS ON A SMALLER GROUP AND WHAT YOU KNOW, THAT'S GOING TO BRING UP THAT GROUP, WHICH BRINGS UP YOUR NUMBER IN TERMS OF THE 380, HOW MANY STUDENTS DO WE NEED TO REACH OUR GOAL OR SURPASS IT? I WOULD HAVE TO SIT AND DO THE MATH. WELL, IT LOOKS LIKE WITH YOU'RE ALREADY AT 1% FOR THE WHOLE.
CORRECT? YES. PROJECTED AND YOUR GOAL WAS 91%.
CORRECT. LET ME SEE. SORRY. I THOUGHT THAT WAS 92.7? YES. OKAY. SO YOU'RE REALLY CLOSE THERE AND THEN IF YOU DO GET FROM WHERE YOU ARE NOW, THE 68%, UP TO 80% SEEMS LIKE THAT YOU'LL BE CRUSHING THAT GOAL TOO.
YES. AND HOPE IS NOT A STRATEGY. SO. YES. ALL RIGHT.
WELL, I APPRECIATE THE FOCUS ON THE GRADUATION RATE BECAUSE AS YOU KNOW, THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE'VE BEEN REALLY PUSHING HARD THIS YEAR BECAUSE IT'S BEEN STAGNANT ACROSS THE DISTRICT FOR THE LAST TEN YEARS. SO I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT. SOUNDS LIKE GREAT WORK. THANK YOU, SO I REALLY APPRECIATE THE INTENTIONALITY THAT YOU'RE SHOWING IN YOUR WORK THERE.
THE FACT THAT YOU'RE TALKING WITH ALL YOUR STAFF ON A REGULAR BASIS AND WITH THE KIDS ABOUT WHAT ARE THE ESSENTIAL LEARNING TARGETS, WHAT ARE THE BEST GRADING PRACTICES TO USE? HOW DO WE GET ALIGNED? THOSE ARE ALL OUTSTANDING CONVERSATIONS TO HAVE TO BRING ALIGNMENT ACROSS.
ALSO, I'M PRESUMING THAT WHEN YOU'RE LOOKING AT THESE STUDENTS THAT WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT IN TERMS OF THE THE GOAL, YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT YOUR SENIORS. SO, YOU KNOW, WITHIN THAT GROUP THERE'S SOME WHO WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT THE 6 ML KIDS,
[00:50:08]
THEY COULD BE, BUT YOU'RE DOING THAT AS WELL AS ALONG THE WAY, STARTING WITH YOUR FRESHMEN, SO THAT YOU CAN MAKE SURE THAT WHEN THEY GET TO THAT SENIOR YEAR, THERE'S NOT A GROUP, WHICH I'M SURE THERE IS, BECAUSE THERE IS IN EVERY SCHOOL OF THOSE WHO JUST AREN'T GOING TO BE THERE IN FOUR YEARS, AS OPPOSED TO THOSE WHO COULD BE IF WE DO THE RIGHT THINGS AND GET THEM THERE.SO WHAT I'M SAYING IS IT JUST SOUNDS LIKE KEITH SAID, YOU HIT THE GROUND RUNNING.
BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE THERE'S REALLY GOOD, INTENTIONAL WORK GOING TOWARD WHAT MATTERS, WHICH IS HELPING THE KIDS FEEL LIKE AND KNOW THAT YOU CARE ABOUT THEM AND THAT YOU'RE THERE TO HELP THEM. SO THANK YOU. YEAH, WE CALL IT LOVE AND TOUGH LOVE.
WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO IS LEARN FROM ONE ANOTHER.
SO WE HAVE TEACHERS COMING IN AND PRESENTING THEIR PRACTICES IN FRONT OF STAFF, BECAUSE WHAT WE WANT TO DO IS CREATE SOME CONSISTENCY AND ALIGNMENT AND SYSTEMS IN PLACE SO THAT EVERY SINGLE KID HAS AN EQUITABLE EXPERIENCE, NO MATTER WHAT TEACHER THEY HAVE OR WHAT CLASS THEY'RE IN AND WE HAVE A STAFF THAT IS FULLY ON BOARD AND EXCITED ABOUT THE WORK FOR THE MOST PART.
SOUNDS GREAT. THANK YOU SO MUCH. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
THANK YOU. MAY I? OH, GOSH. YES. I'M SO SORRY.
DIRECTOR GIRARDI, I'M GLAD YOU JUMPED IN. THERE'S SO MUCH I LOVE ABOUT THIS THIS PLAN.
AND I LOVE THE PHRASES LIKE TARGETED UNIVERSALISM AND THE FACT THAT YOU'VE PULLED OUT A GROUP TO FOCUS ON THAT NEEDS, NEEDS THAT FOCUS IT AS YOU TRY TO REACH THAT GOAL WITH THOSE STUDENTS, THEN ARE USING CREDIT RETRIEVAL METHODS.
WHAT HOW IS THE HOW ARE YOU HELPING GET THE ONES THAT ARE NOT ON TRACK ON TRACK? I ASSUME IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT THE CLASSES THEY'RE TAKING THIS YEAR, IT'S ABOUT THE ONES THAT THEY MAYBE DIDN'T PASS IN THE PREVIOUS YEARS.
YES. SO IN ADDITION TO JUST THE CONVERSATIONS WE'RE HAVING, THE CONTACTING WITH TEACHERS, WITH PARENTS AND STUDENTS TOGETHER TO DO THOSE INDIVIDUAL PLANS SO THAT WE ARE BEING PROACTIVE INSTEAD OF REACTIVE.
WHAT WE ARE RESPONDING TO ARE THE KIDS WHO HAVE GONE FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW AND REALLY NEED MORE THAN JUST THE SIX PERIODS TO GRADUATE AND SO YES, WE'RE DOING WE HAVE THREE SECTIONS OF CREDIT RETRIEVAL THAT WE'RE DOING.
I MEAN, THIS IS ALL HANDS ON DECK. LAURA SCHWARZENBERGER IS A PERSON WHO IS ALSO JUST DOES A LOT OF STUDY HALL STUFF ON TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS AFTER SCHOOL. WE HAVE A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR KIDS TO GET HELP.
EXCELLENT. I GUESS THAT'S IT. THANKS. BEFORE WE CLOSE THIS PRESENTATION, I DO JUST WANT TO SAY SHE'S NOT ONLY HIT THE GROUND RUNNING. SHE'S ALSO BEEN HIRED FOR THE JOB THIS YEAR BECAUSE SHE HIT THE GROUND RUNNING AS AN INTERIM, THEN WENT THROUGH A FULL AND OPEN PROCESS TO BECOME THE ONGOING PRINCIPAL OF MEADOWDALE.
AND SO WE'RE GLAD TO HAVE YOU ON BOARD. THANK YOU.
WE'RE VERY GLAD TO HAVE YOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
THANK YOU. NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS THE SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT.
[8. SUPERINTENDENT REPORT-7:20 pm]
SO I DON'T WANT TO DO SPOILER ALERTS FOR THE BUDGET, WHICH WE'LL BE COVERING IN THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION.BUT I WOULD I SEE WE HAVE A NUMBER OF PUBLIC COMMENTS COMING UP ABOUT CONCERNS ABOUT THE BUDGET AND OBVIOUSLY WE SHARE THOSE DEEP CONCERNS ABOUT OUR BUDGET AND CARIN DURING THE LEGISLATIVE UPDATE, WE'LL BE SHARING INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT WE KNOW, WHAT WE DON'T KNOW, WHAT THE WHAT IT'S LOOKING LIKE. SO I HOPE THOSE OF YOU WHO CAN STAY BEYOND THE PUBLIC COMMENTS, WE DON'T HAVE A LOT OF ITEMS IN BETWEEN PUBLIC COMMENTS AND THAT LEGISLATIVE REPORT, AND I HOPE THAT FOLKS ARE ABLE TO STAY BECAUSE YESTERDAY THOSE BUDGETS DID DROP AND WE LEARNED A LOT MORE ABOUT THEM. SO THANK YOU. NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS THE APPROVAL OF MINUTES.
[9. APPROVAL OF MINUTES-7:30 pm]
WE HAVE THREE MEETINGS. WE'LL DO THEM IN TWO DIFFERENT LOADS.ONE IS 9.1. DO I HEAR A MOTION AND A SECOND TO APPROVE THE MINUTES FROM THE MARCH 4TH, 2025 SPECIAL MEETING? THAT WAS THE STUDY SESSION ON STUDENT SERVICES UPDATE.
SO MOVED. IS THERE A SECOND? SECOND. I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE.
[00:55:05]
AND A SECOND. IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE.PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED SAY NAY.
ANY ABSTENTIONS. ABSTAIN. I ABSTAIN ALSO. NEXT ARE THE MINUTES.
AND SO THE MINUTES FROM THE MARCH 4TH, 2025 SPECIAL MEETING ARE APPROVED.
DO I HEAR A MOTION? AND A SECOND. SO MOVED. SECOND.
I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE. AND A SECOND. IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? JUST THAT THE REASON WHY THERE'S VERY RARELY ANY, YOU KNOW, DISCUSSION ABOUT ANY OF THE MINUTES IS BECAUSE THEY'RE TAKEN SO WELL, AND THAT'S BECAUSE OF THAT PERSON SITTING DOWN THERE.
YES. THANK YOU ERIN. ANY OTHER COMMENTS? HEARING NONE.
I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF APPROVING THE MINUTES FROM THE MARCH 11TH, 2025 SPECIAL MEETING, WHICH WAS THE STUDY SESSION ON I-READY AND THE MINUTES FROM THE MARCH 11TH, 2025 REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING.
PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED SAY NAY ANY ABSTENTIONS AND THE MINUTES FROM THE 2ND MARCH 11, 2025 BOARD MEETINGS ARE APPROVED. NEXT WE HAVE PUBLIC COMMENTS.
[10. PUBLIC COMMENTS-7:35 pm]
THE GUIDELINES REGARDING PUBLIC COMMENTS ARE ON THE DISTRICT WEBSITE.WE ASK THAT YOU LIMIT YOUR COMMENT TO THREE MINUTES.
A TIMER WILL BE RUNNING SO THAT YOU CAN MONITOR YOUR TIME.
PLEASE BE SURE TO TELL US YOUR NAME, YOUR CITY OF RESIDENCE, YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO THE DISTRICT, AND THE AGENDA ITEM OR SCHOOL DISTRICT TOPIC THAT YOU'RE ADDRESSING TONIGHT.
PUBLIC COMMENTS ARE MADE FROM THIS FRONT PODIUM FACING US AND ARE DIRECTED TO THE BOARD AND NOT TO THE AUDIENCE AND YOU THE YOU CAN JUST HOLD THE MIC, WHICH MAY MAKE IT EASIER TO MAKE SURE THAT PEOPLE WHO ARE LISTENING IN CAN HEAR.
I'M HERE TO ADDRESS THE PROPOSED CUT OF A STUDENT INTERVENTION COORDINATOR IN OUR TITLE ONE SCHOOLS, WHICH WOULD HAVE STRONG NEGATIVE IMPLICATIONS FOR OUR POPULATION OF STUDENTS AND TEACHERS.
MANY OF THE STUDENTS IN OUR SCHOOL, AS WELL AS IN ALL TITLE ONE SCHOOLS, ARE DEEPLY IMPACTED BY TRAUMA, RESULTING IN DAILY BEHAVIORS THAT ARE DIFFICULT FOR CLASSROOM TEACHERS TO MANAGE WHILE ALSO MAINTAINING A CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT OF ACADEMIC RIGOR.
SOME OF THESE EXAMPLES THAT WE SEE DAILY INCLUDE THROWING AND BREAKING CLASSROOM MATERIALS, RIPPING UP ASSIGNMENTS, STANDING UP ON TABLES AND CHAIRS.
YELLING, SCREAMING AND SWEARING AT CLASSMATES AND SCHOOL STAFF.
GRABBING, KICKING AND PUNCHING CLASSMATES AND LEAVING THE CLASSROOM WITHOUT PERMISSION.
THESE BEHAVIORS SIGNIFICANTLY DECREASED THE AMOUNT OF INSTRUCTIONAL TIME THAT IS ABLE TO TAKE PLACE IN OUR CLASSROOMS. ON DAYS WHEN THE CURRENT PART TIME SINK STUDENT INTERVENTION COORDINATOR IS IN THE BUILDING.
LEAVING THE BUILDING UNDERSTAFFED IN THIS AREA WHENEVER THE SINK IS NOT PRESENT.
IF WE DON'T HAVE THE STAFF TO SUPPORT AND HELP MEET THE VERY REAL SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL NEEDS OF STUDENT POPULATIONS LIKE OURS, ADMIN AND TEACHING STAFF WILL BURN OUT. THERE'S A REASON THAT CERTAIN SCHOOLS HAVE BEEN DESIGNATED AS TITLE ONE SCHOOLS, AND IT IS TO HELP MEET THE NEEDS OF ALL STUDENTS IN OUR DISTRICT, WHILE PROVIDING THE LEVEL OF EDUCATION THAT ENGAGED VETERAN TEACHERS AND ADMINS PROVIDE.
LOSING SKILLED AND VETERAN STAFF, WHICH HAS HAPPENED AT THE END OF EACH YEAR I'VE TAUGHT AT CEDAR VALLEY, WILL INEVITABLY INCREASE THE OPPORTUNITY AND ACHIEVEMENT GAP ALREADY PRESENT AT OUR SCHOOL AT CEDAR VALLEY, WE CURRENTLY HAVE A HALF TIME SINK, AND WHEN THEY ARE NOT IN THE BUILDING, OUR ADMIN SPENDS HIS ENTIRE DAY WITH STUDENTS WHO NEED EMOTIONAL SKILL, REGULATION AND SUPPORT. HE DOES NOT HAVE ANY TIME TO SUPPORT TEACHERS IN IMPROVING INSTRUCTION WITHOUT THIS HALF TIME POSITION.
THIS IS WHAT I SEE HAPPENING IN OUR BUILDING ADMIN SPENDING THEIR ENTIRE DAY SUPPORTING STUDENT BEHAVIOR, HIGH ADMIN BURNOUT AND TURNOVER, HIGH TEACHER BURNOUT AND TURNOVER.
[01:00:03]
OUR SCHOOL CONTINUING TO LOSE THE HIGH QUALITY VETERAN STAFF WE DESPERATELY NEED.CONVERSELY, IF WE WERE TO HAVE A FULL TIME SINK IN OUR BUILDING, STUDENTS WHO ARE STILL LEARNING AND PRACTICING EMOTIONAL REGULATION SKILLS WOULD HAVE A SPACE TO DE-ESCALATE, REFLECT, RECEIVE SOCIAL SKILL INSTRUCTION, AND RESTORE ANY BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS BEFORE RETURNING TO THE CLASSROOM, ALLOWING ACADEMIC INSTRUCTION TO CONTINUE FOR ALL STUDENTS THAT REMAIN IN THE CLASSROOM.
OH THANK YOU. OKAY. THANK YOU. AND MEET THE NEEDS OF OUR DIVERSE POPULATION OF LEARNERS.
PLEASE CONSIDER MAKING BUDGET CUTS SOMEWHERE ELSE SO THAT THE EQUITY AND BALANCE THAT EXISTS IN OUR SCHOOL DOES NOT INCREASE. THANK YOU. NEXT IS KIM COPELAND. HI.
THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING US THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK WITH YOU.
MY STORY IS BASICALLY VERY SIMILAR TO DEBBI MORGAN'S.
I'VE BEEN WORKING WITH HER FOR THE LAST SIX YEARS AT CEDAR VALLEY.
THIS IS MY 25TH YEAR IN THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND IN THE PAST I'VE WORKED AT OTHER ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AS WELL, AND I'M WRITING TO EXPRESS MY DEEP CONCERN REGARDING THE POTENTIAL REDUCTION OF THE BEHAVIORAL SUPPORT SERVICES AT CEDAR VALLEY AND ALL TITLE ONE SCHOOLS, SPECIFICALLY, THAT POSSIBILITY OF ELIMINATING THE PART TIME SYNC AS REPRESENTED IN THE BALANCING BUDGET ACT SIMULATION OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS. OUR SCHOOL HAS ALREADY SEEN A SIGNIFICANT DECLINE IN SUPPORT STAFF.
WHEN I FIRST STARTED AT CEDAR VALLEY FIVE YEARS AGO, THERE WAS A FULL TIME ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AND A FULL TIME STUDENT INTERVENTION COORDINATOR CURRENTLY FOR THE 450 STUDENTS THAT WE HAVE AT OUR SCHOOL.
WE HAVE A 0.5 PARAPROFESSIONAL NOW, AND THE DEMANDS OF OUR DUAL LANGUAGE TITLE ONE SCHOOL, WHICH INCLUDES 72.8% OF OUR STUDENTS FROM LOW INCOME HOMES.
AT LEAST 55% MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS AND 9% HOMELESS STUDENTS ARE FAR BEYOND WHAT A 0.5 FTE CAN REASONABLY ADDRESS. AND AS DEMI WAS SAYING, AS A RESULT, OUR PRINCIPAL, OUT OF NECESSITY, HAS HAD TO DIVERT MUCH OF HIS TIME AT LEAST THREE DAYS PER WEEK WHEN THE SINK IS NOT THERE, TO MANAGING BEHAVIORAL ISSUES, WHICH COMES AT A DIRECT EXPENSE OF HIS INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP DUTIES.
THIS IS UNSUSTAINABLE FOR HIM, AND IT ULTIMATELY UNDERMINES THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION OUR STUDENTS RECEIVE, ESPECIALLY IF WE'RE LOOKING AT GRADUATION RATES.
WE NEED TO START AT THE BOTTOM TO GIVE THOSE STUDENTS WHAT THEY NEED.
SO THIS YEAR, WE'VE PUT MANY TIER ONE INTERVENTIONS IN PLACE WITH OUR NEW PRINCIPAL AND OUR STAFF.
WE HAVE A NEW COMMITTEE, AND EVEN WITH THESE TIER ONE INTERVENTIONS IN PLACE, WE STILL HAVE MANY TIER TWO BEHAVIORS THAT ARE OCCURRING EVERY DAY, MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY.
LET'S SEE. SO BASICALLY, IF OUR SYNC WERE ACTUALLY TO BE FULL TIME, THEY COULD ADJUST THEIR SCHEDULE TO WORK WITH STUDENTS STUDENTS NEEDS. RIGHT? AND PROVIDE DAILY INTERACTION WITH THEM AND REMINDERS THEY COULD HELP THEM WITH SOCIAL STORIES AND CHECK INS.
THE TRUTH IS THAT THE 0.5 IS JUST NOT ENOUGH.
I MEAN, 21.9% OF OUR STUDENTS PASSED IN ENGLISH AND 13.9 IN MATH.
AND I THINK IF ANYTHING, WE NEED A FULL TIME SINK IN OUR SCHOOL.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME. NEXT UP IS LAUREN JOHNSON.
HELLO, SUPERINTENDENT MINER AND THE BOARD MEMBERS.
THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME SPEAK. SO MY NAME IS LAUREN JOHNSON.
[01:05:06]
SCHOOL DISTRICT THAT THEY NEED A SINK. THE STUDENT INTERVENTION COORDINATOR AND JUST TO EVEN EMPHASIZE MORE, THE TITLE ONE SCHOOLS REALLY DO NEED THE STUDENT INTERVENTION COORDINATOR.FOR MANY OF OUR STUDENTS IN OUR TITLE ONE SCHOOLS.
THESE COORDINATORS BUILD STRONG, TRUSTING RELATIONSHIPS WITH STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES, ENABLING THEM TO IDENTIFY EARLY WARNING SIGNS OF ACADEMIC AND EMOTIONAL DISTRESS AND INTERVENE IN WAYS THAT CAN MAKE A LONG LASTING DIFFERENCE.
WHEN THE STUDENTS IN TITLE ONE SCHOOLS HAVE ACCESS TO A DEDICATED COORDINATOR, THEY ARE MORE LIKELY TO STAY ENGAGED IN SCHOOLS, IMPROVE THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND HAVE BETTER OVERALL OUTCOMES.
THESE COORDINATORS PLAY AN ESSENTIAL ROLE IN HELPING STUDENTS OVERCOME SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL CHALLENGES, WHICH ARE ESPECIALLY PREVALENT AMONG THOSE EXPERIENCING POVERTY AND ADVERSITY.
I STRONGLY URGE YOU TO RECONSIDER THE PROPOSED BUDGET CUT TO OUR SYNC POSITION.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME AND I HOPE YOU HAVE A WONDERFUL EVENING.
THANK YOU. NEXT IS CHERYL PASSARGE.
HELLO, EVERYBODY. YEAH. HELLO, EVERYBODY. I'M CHERYL, AND DESPITE THE FACT THAT I LIVE IN SEATTLE, I WORK AT THE EDMONDS FOR THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT AS A PROUD PARENT EDUCATOR.
FIRST THINGS FIRST. EXCELLENT ARTICLE IN THE EVERETT HERALD.
WOW. THANK YOU. AND THANKS, ANDY, WHEREVER YOU ARE.
ALTHOUGH I THANK YOU YESTERDAY. THANK YOU. SO GOOD, SO WELL DONE.
I WILL BE PRINTING IT UP AND SENDING IT TO MY THREE STATE LEGISLATORS, AND I WILL BE BRINGING IT TO THEM AT THEIR COFFEE WITH CONSTITUENTS AND HAND DELIVERING IT TO THEM.
DESPITE THE FACT THAT THEY REPRESENT THE 36TH DISTRICT, WHICH IS NOT THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT, THAT'S OKAY. THEY'RE STILL IN THE STATE. THEY NEED TO READ IT. THEY NEED TO HEAR IT. THEY NEED TO KNOW IT.
I DON'T KNOW IF THEY GET THE EVERETT HERALD, THEY'RE GOING TO GET IT FROM ME. SO THANK YOU.
MY SECOND THING IS THE NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED TEACHERS.
I UNDERSTAND THAT IN THE STATE SENATE, BUDGET CUTS TO STIPENDS ARE TAKEN OFF THE TABLE RIGHT NOW.
I DON'T KNOW YET ABOUT THE HOUSE BUDGET. SO I'M HOPEFUL THAT THE HOUSE IS GOING TO GO ALONG WITH THE STATE AND THAT THERE WILL NOT BE CUTS TO STIPENDS FOR NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED TEACHERS, BECAUSE, QUITE FRANKLY, WE NEED THEM.
SO MY CHALLENGE TO EACH OF THE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS, HI, THOM GERRARD IS HOW WILL YOU BE COMMUNICATING WITH YOUR THREE STATE LEGISLATORS REGARDING NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED STATE FUNDS IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS? I HAVE ALREADY COMMUNICATED WITH MINE ABOUT THE NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED TEACHER STIPENDS.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU. NEXT IS ERICA ESCAMILLA. HI.
[01:10:08]
IS IT ON? GOOD EVENING. I'M HERE TO SUPPORT MY CEDAR VALLEY COMMUNITY AS A PARENT. SECOND TIME AROUND. AND I'M HERE, I DON'T KNOW IF YOU GUYS WERE ON THIS BOARD TEN YEARS AGO OR A LITTLE MORE SO. BUT I STOOD AT THIS VERY SPOT BEGGING FOR OUR FAMILY RESOURCE ADVOCATES NOT TO BE SHARING SCHOOLS. THANK GOD THAT ALL GOT SETTLED OUT. BUT HERE WE ARE AND OUR KIDS NEED THOSE RESOURCES NOW MORE THAN EVER WITH THEIR FULL TIME FAMILY RESOURCE ADVOCATES.NOW WE ARE ADVOCATING FOR THE SAME COORDINATORS.
I'M HERE TO TELL YOU THE REAL LIFE STORY OF WHAT HAPPENS TO THE CEDAR VALLEY KIDS.
BECAUSE NONE OF MY SON'S FRIENDS ARE PROBABLY THEY'RE NOT GOING TO WALK ACROSS THE STAGE.
WE'RE STILL TRYING TO GET THERE WITH MY SON. THEY'RE ALL TRYING TO DO ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMS. THERE STILL HOPE, BUT THEY DIDN'T HAVE THAT, AND THEY DIDN'T GET TO HAVE A LINK WHEN THEY GOT TO HIGH SCHOOL BECAUSE THEY WERE COMING OUT OF COVID. SO EVERYONE NEEDS. SEEING COORDINATORS, BUT THESE SCHOOLS AND THESE TEACHERS AND I'VE SEEN IT.
IT'S MY SECOND TIME AT CEDAR VALLEY AND THOSE VETERAN TEACHERS THAT ARE THERE, NOT BECAUSE OF ALL THE PARENTS AND THE PTO MONEY. LAST YEAR, THE FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS COULDN'T EVEN GO ON A FIELD TRIP BECAUSE OF BEHAVIOR, AND THEY HAD TO SEPARATE THEM OUT AND IT WAS LIKE A WHOLE MONTH HOOPLA.
THE MALE TEACHER DIDN'T WANT TO TAKE HIS KIDS JUST TO THE ROLLER RINK BECAUSE OF SAFETY.
THESE THINGS DON'T GO AWAY. THEY ONLY GET WORSE AND OUR KIDS NEED THEM SO BAD IN THIS DAY AND AGE.
THE SOCIAL MENTAL HEALTH THE TEACHERS CAN'T TEACH.
A KINDERGARTEN TOLD ME A KID WAS CHUNKING STAPLER, THE STAPLER AT HIM INTO JANUARY LAST YEAR, AND SOME OF THESE KIDS DON'T GET ASSESSED TO GET TAKEN TO OTHER SCHOOLS UNTIL HOW MUCH LEARNING HAS BEEN LOST? WE WANT TO IMPROVE OUR GRADES. WE WANT TO IMPROVE OUR SCORES.
WE GOT TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR LITTLE HEARTS AND MINDS FROM WHAT'S HAPPENING AT HOME.
OTHER THAN THAT, THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH. THANK YOU, MR. GERRARD. WE ARE ALMOST DONE WITH THE FRAMEWORK OF THE CITY OF LYNNWOOD YOUTH COUNCIL.
WE'VE GOT ONE MORE MEETING TO FINALIZE THE APPLICATION AND WE WILL BE LAUNCHING IN APRIL.
AND THESE ARE NOT GOING TO BE WE WANT DIFFERENT.
WE WANT TO HEAR. WE WANT TO JOIN. WE WANT TO WORK TOGETHER.
I'M HERE FOR ALL OF THE REASONS. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.
GOOD AFTERNOON. MY NAME IS ANGELA GARRIDO. I'M THE FAMILY RESOURCE ADVOCATE AT CEDAR VALLEY ELEMENTARY, AND I AM COMING IN A SPECIAL MISSION TO INVITE YOU TO ONE OF OUR DAILY DAYS IN CEDAR VALLEY AND EXPERIENCE. HOW IS A DAY WITHOUT A SINK? BUT ALSO, I WOULD LIKE TO INVITE YOU TO A DAY WITH A SINK, SO YOU CAN SEE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ONE DAY AND THE OTHER DAY.
AND I AM COMING ALSO ON BEHALF OF OUR FAMILIES, THE CEDAR VALLEY FAMILIES THAT ARE HERE TODAY.
ALSO TO SAY THAT THE BUDGET BALANCING TOOL IS NOT A TOOL THAT REPRESENTS OUR FAMILIES, THAT IS OUR TOOL THAT OUR FAMILIES, THEY DON'T HAVE A WAY TO ACCESS.
SO THERE IS A THIS IS A WAY TO BE A VOICE FOR THEM AND SAY THAT THERE IS NO REPRESENTATION ON THOSE DECISIONS FROM OUR FAMILIES, THAT THEY ARE THE MOST IMPACTED BY THE DECISIONS THAT ARE TAKEN HERE.
AND ALSO, I WANTED TO SAY THAT WE ARE STILL STRUGGLING TO ACCESS REPORT CARDS FROM PARENTSQUARE AND SKYWARD. SO THOSE TOOLS THAT TRY TO GET THE VOICE OF PARENTS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT IS HAPPENING AT CEDAR VALLEY.
[01:15:08]
THAT IT IS A UNIQUE SCHOOL WITH UNIQUE STRENGTHS.I INVITE YOU TO GO TO OUR SCHOOL AND BE A SINK FOR A DAY OR TWO.
WE DESPERATELY NEED MORE HANDS AND NOT ONLY TRY TO AVOID TO CUT THE POSITION, BUT TRY TO REINSTATE THE FULL TIME POSITION.
I'VE BEEN IN CEDAR VALLEY FOR TEN YEARS. I KNOW ALL THE STRUGGLES AND TRAUMA THAT OUR FAMILIES FACE, BUT ALSO I KNOW ALL THE STRENGTH, THE POWER, THE COURAGE TO BE IN A COUNTRY WITH A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES.
AND I WOULD LOVE TO GIVE THEM FOR RECEIVING THOSE OPPORTUNITIES.
I APPRECIATE THIS TIME AND I STILL HAVE 30S. 2928 SO PLEASE GO TO CEDAR VALLEY.
YOU CAN JOIN US ONE DAY. THANK YOU. NEXT IS SARAH DILLING. MY KIDS GOING TO COLLEGE. I'M VERY EXCITED ABOUT THIS. I GOT THE MOM HAT AND EVERYTHING.
I WONDER IF THE ONLY WAY TO DO IT IS TO CANCEL ALL SPORTS AT ALL LEVELS, AND MAKE THEM NOTICE THAT A SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS COMPLETELY PULLED OUT OF INTRAMURAL STUFF AND THEY'LL GO, WAIT A MINUTE. MAYBE THEY DON'T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY FOR THAT.
BUT MAYBE A GRAND GESTURE IS WHAT'S NEEDED AT THIS POINT, AND I DON'T KNOW HOW TO FIX IT.
BUT LORD, WE NEED MORE MONEY NOW.
[11. CONSENT AGENDA-8:05 pm]
OR SEPARATE THEM IF WE NEED TO. TONIGHT'S AMENDED AGENDA INCLUDES NINE ITEMS. THREE HAVE TO DO WITH PERSONNEL AND STAFF AGREEMENTS.ONE HAS TO DO WITH AN AGREEMENT WITH THE EDMONDS POLICE DEPARTMENT THAT WE PREVIOUSLY APPROVED, BUT IT WAS LACKING IN ENDING DATE. TWO HAVE TO DO WITH THE PURCHASE OF TECHNOLOGY.
ONE IS OUR MONTHLY BILLS AND VOUCHERS AND TWO OUR FIELD TRIPS.
DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE? AND A SECOND FOR TONIGHT'S AMENDED CONSENT AGENDA.
MOVE TO APPROVE. I'LL SECOND. I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE. I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF APPROVING TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA, PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE.
AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED SAY NAY. ANY ABSTENTIONS AND TONIGHT'S AMENDED CONSENT AGENDA IS APPROVED.
WE HAVE TWO ITEMS OF NEW BUSINESS THIS EVENING.
[12. NEW BUSINESS- 8:15 pm]
THE FIRST IS 12.1, A SINGLE READING TO APPROVE RESOLUTION 2509.THIS IS IN REGARD TO REPAIRS OF FORMER ALDERWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL FROM WINTER WATER DAMAGE.
WHEN WE HAD THAT HEAVY FREEZE, DO I HEAR A MOTION AND A SECOND TO APPROVE RESOLUTION NUMBER 25-09 ACCEPTANCE OF THE COMPLETED PUBLIC WORKS CONTRACT FOR EMERGENCY REPAIRS AT FORMER ALDERWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL FROM WINTER WATER DAMAGE.
MOVE TO APPROVE. I'LL SECOND. I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE.
AND A SECOND. IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? JUST WANT TO GO ON THE RECORD HERE.
THIS WOULD BE TYPICALLY ONE THAT I WOULD STAY AWAY FROM BECAUSE OF ISSUES I'VE DISCUSSED BEFORE, BUT BECAUSE THIS IS WORK THAT IS ALREADY DONE, I DON'T FEEL THE NEED TO RECUSE MYSELF ON THIS ONE. THANK YOU.
ANYTHING ELSE? HEARING NONE. I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF APPROVING RESOLUTION NUMBER 25-09, PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE.
[01:20:06]
FORMER ALDERWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL FOR WINTER WATER DAMAGE IS APPROVED.DO I HEAR A MOTION AND A SECOND TO APPROVE THE BID AWARD TO EXCEL PACIFIC INCORPORATED, THE LOWEST RESPONSIBLE BIDDER FOR THE COVERED PLAY STRUCTURES PROJECT. MOVE TO APPROVE.
I'LL SECOND. I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE. AND A SECOND.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT THIS IS BEING FUNDED OUT OF THE 2021 LEVY, AND IT'S GOING TO BEVERLY AND MARTHA LAKE. SO I'M GLAD TO SEE THOSE SCHOOLS GETTING THIS.
ANY OTHER DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE. I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE.
PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE. AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED SAY NAY.
ANY ABSTENTIONS AND THE BID AWARD TO EXCEL PACIFIC INCORPORATED, THE LOWEST RESPONSIBLE BIDDER FOR THE COVERED PLAY STRUCTURES PROJECT, IS APPROVED. NEXT WE HAVE OUR LEGISLATIVE UPDATES.
[13. LEGISLATIVE UPDATES]
IF I COULD JUST SET THE STAGE FOR THIS ONE A LITTLE BIT AS A REMINDER, JUST WE ANTICIPATE ABOUT $8.6 MILLION IN BUDGET REDUCTIONS NEEDED THIS YEAR. IF THERE IS NO LEGISLATIVE INTERVENTION ON THE BALANCING ACT, WE ASKED PEOPLE TO TALK ABOUT $2 MILLION OF THOSE NOT THE FULL 8.6, BECAUSE FRANKLY, AS WE'VE DISCUSSED HERE MANY TIMES, WE DON'T EVEN KNOW WHERE WE'LL BEGIN TO GET $8.6 MILLION. THE CHALLENGE IN A $400 MILLION BUDGET, $8.6 MILLION, FRANKLY, IS NOT VERY MUCH.SO I THINK TONIGHT WE HAVE A LITTLE BIT MORE OPTIMISTIC NEWS, BUT I WANTED TO JUST SET THAT STAGE KIND OF THE REALITY WE'RE LIVING IN AND EXPERIENCING RIGHT NOW AND WHAT WE'RE DOING TO TRY AND ALTER THAT REALITY.
SO I'LL LOOK TO DIRECTOR CHASE, WHO IS OUR WONDERFUL AND VALUED LEGISLATIVE REPRESENTATIVE.
I THANK YOU, DIRECTOR KATIMS. IT TAKES A VILLAGE.
JUST SAY IT. WELL, AS WE KNOW, WE ARE ON THE 10TH WEEK IS IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR.
AND WE HAVE, AS WE CONTINUE ON OUR YEAR ROUND ADVOCACY.
AS YOU CAN SEE, WE ARE STILL INTERACTING WITH THE LEGISLATURE.
WE'VE GOT 5263 ON SPECIAL ED AND 5192. THEY BOTH HAD HEARINGS ON THE 19TH, AND I HAD TO DOUBLE CHECK THIS REPORT. BUT ON 5192, THERE WERE 4680 PEOPLE SIGNED IN.
SO THAT IS SOME SERIOUS ADVOCACY. THAT'S THE [INAUDIBLE] BILL.
AND OF THOSE THREE QUARTERS, 3 TO 2, THREE QUARTERS OF THOSE WERE SIGNING IN PRO.
AND SO THIS IS JUST A TESTAMENT TO PEOPLE ARE PAYING ATTENTION.
THAT'S A LOT OF PEOPLE. AND THEN ON THE SPECIAL ED BILL 5263, THERE WERE JUST ABOUT 2600 PEOPLE SIGNING IN AND THERE ONLY TEN WERE CON. AND I HAD TO LOOK AT THAT AGAIN, THAT THERE WERE REALLY ONLY 10 SO SO I THINK THAT AS FAR AS LETTING OUR LEGISLATORS, OUR LAWMAKERS, KNOW THAT THOSE OPINIONS OF THOSE OF US IN EDUCATION ADVOCACY FEEL ABOUT, I THINK EVERYBODY'S GETTING A GOLD STAR ON THIS ONE.
NOW, THEY DID HAVE HEARINGS, BUT WE DO NOT HAVE ANY INDICATION YET ON EXECUTIVE ACTION TAKEN.
AND I'M ASSUMING THAT IS BECAUSE THE BUDGET FORECAST JUST CAME OUT.
ANYTHING ON THOSE TWO BILLS THAT WE'VE GOT? ANY OTHER INSIGHT? I DON'T HAVE ANY OTHER INSIGHT ON THOSE PARTICULAR BILLS. DID OKAY.
WELL, THE HOUSE AND BUDGET, HOUSE AND SENATE OPERATING BUDGETS HAVE BOTH BEEN RELEASED.
THAT'S ON TOP OF A REVENUE FORECAST OF 844 MILLION DECREASE.
AND SO THEY HAVE PUT THEIR BUDGETS FORWARD. JUST YESTERDAY.
SO THERE'S A LOT OF UNPACKING TO DO. WHAT WE DO KNOW IS THINGS ARE GOING TO MOVE REALLY FAST THIS WEEK THROUGH THEIR HOUSES, AND THEN THERE'S GOING TO BE SERIOUS NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN THE HOUSES TO RECONCILE SOME OF THE DISCREPANCIES BETWEEN THE TWO IN A TOP.
[01:25:09]
JUST KIND OF LIKE QUICK LOOK, THE SENATE IN PARTICULAR BUDGET HAD ONE POINT, A LITTLE OVER A BILLION IN SPECIAL ED FUNDING, WHILE THE HOUSE ONLY HAD 188 MILLION. SO THAT'S SOMETHING TO PAY ATTENTION TO AND MY NOTES SAY THAT THE SENATE ALSO HAD NO CHANGE TO THE NATIONAL BOARD BONUSES, AND THE HOUSE HAD NO CUTS TO THE NATIONAL BOARD BUDGET.WE WILL SEE. THERE'S A GENERAL SENSE THAT THERE IS APPETITE TO ALIGN BETWEEN THE HOUSE AND THE SENATE, BUT WE REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT'S GOING TO LOOK LIKE AND I REALLY WISH I HAD MORE TO SAY ABOUT THIS.
I ATTENDED THE DISTRICT ONE TOWN HALL LAST NIGHT, WHICH WAS VIRTUAL, SPOKE AT THAT I IN FAVOR OF THE SENATE'S BUDGET BECAUSE THAT IS AND JUST TO BE REALLY CLEAR SPECIAL ED, WE CONTRIBUTE A LOT OF MONEY TO SPECIAL EDUCATION THROUGH OUR GENERAL FUND BECAUSE WE'RE SO UNDERFUNDED IN GENERAL FUND.
SO ANY ASSISTANCE WE GET TO SPECIAL ED REDUCES WHAT WE WOULD CONSIDER TO BE ILLEGAL COMPLIANCE ON OUR LOCAL DOLLARS FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION AND FREES THOSE UP TO DO OTHER THINGS.
SO I SPOKE ON BEHALF OF THAT. I ALSO ASKED ABOUT THE LEVY LID LIFT.
THAT WAS MY QUESTION. WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE ASKING QUESTIONS. I TOSSED IN A LITTLE BIT OF ADVOCACY TOO, BUT I ASKED ABOUT THE LEVY LID LIFT BECAUSE OUR VOTERS HAVE VOTED, AS WE ALL KNOW, MORE TAX AUTHORITY FOR THE DISTRICT THAN WE ARE ABLE TO COLLECT.
AND THEY SAID THAT A BILL DROPPED YESTERDAY AND TODAY I JUST DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO CHASE THAT DOWN.
BUT THERE MAY BE A BILL ABOUT THAT. EVEN THOUGH IT'S LATE IN THE SESSION, THEY CAN STILL DO THINGS THAT ARE NECESSARY TO IMPLEMENT THE BUDGET, AND THAT COULD BE A PART OF THAT. THAT WOULD BE GREAT NEWS.
SO AS I WAS GOING THROUGH SOME OF THE BILLS YESTERDAY TO SEE THE STATUS, THERE ARE TWO BILLS THAT ARE NOT CALLED THE LEVY LID BILLS, BUT THE LEVY LID. RAISING THE CAP ON THE LEVY LID WAS PART OF THESE TWO BILLS AND I DON'T I DIDN'T WRITE THEM DOWN, I DON'T KNOW OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD WHAT THEY WERE, BUT I WAS REALLY PLEASED TO SEE THAT, EVEN THAT I THINK IT WAS BOTH THE HOUSE AND THE SENATE.
I WOULDN'T BET ON THAT, BUT THAT THOSE ARE STILL THAT'S STILL ALIVE IN AS SUBSETS, AS A COMPONENT IN OTHER BILL, SOME BILLS THAT ARE ALSO FOCUSING ON SOME OTHER THINGS.
WE CAN I'LL TAKE A QUICK LOOK SO WE'LL BE ABLE TO OUR NEXT UPDATE.
I'M SORRY I DIDN'T DO A VERY GOOD JOB OF COMMUNICATING.
YEAH, IT SEEMS LIKE IT'S STILL THERE. IT SEEMS LIKE IT'S STILL THERE.
SO THAT WAS 32ND AND ASKED, AND CINDY SAID SOMETHING ABOUT THE FACT THAT THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY SUPPORTING GOING FROM 1% TO 3% AS THE CAP ON THE LEVY LID.
SO AND I DO WANT TO I WANT TO THANK SHERYL FOR HAVING POINTED OUT THE LETTER THAT WAS JOINTLY WRITTEN BY DOCTOR MINER AND MYSELF AND ANDY NOFZIGER TO SHOW THE TRIFECTA OF LEADERSHIP IN THE DISTRICT.
ALL THAT WE ARE IN AGREEMENT. THAT LETTER WAS SENT TO EVERY LEGISLATOR, NOT JUST OURS, EVERY LEGISLATOR IN THE STATE. IT'S BEEN PUBLISHED IN THE HERALD AND IT'S TODAY CAME OUT IN THE MY EDMONDS NEWS, MY MOUNTLAKE TERRACE NEWS, LYNNWOOD TODAY NETWORK. SO IF YOU WANT TO SEE IT, THOSE ARE ACCESSIBLE TO THE PUBLIC.
I KNOW THE HERALD OPENED IT UP SO THE PUBLIC CAN SEE IT WITHOUT HAVING TO BE A SUBSCRIBER AND IT'S CALLED LAWMAKERS MUST ABIDE DUTY FOR AMPLE K-12 FUNDING. THE STATE NEEDS ARE MANY, BUT THE CONSTITUTION MAKES CLEAR WHERE ITS PARAMOUNT DUTY LIES.
IT'S AN EXCELLENT ARTICLE, AND I THINK THE TITLE THAT THERESA WHIPPLE CHOSE FOR THE NETWORK NEWS WAS WE HAVE NOTHING LEFT TO CUT, WHICH IS A QUOTE FROM IT. WHAT WE FOCUSED ON IN THERE IN TERMS OF THE THREE ASKS, ONE IS THE SPECIAL ED FUNDING, ONE IS THE MSAC FUNDING, AND ONE IS LIFTING THE LEVY CAP.
THERE ARE OTHER DISTRICTS AROUND THE STATE WE HAVE GIVEN THIS TO AND SAID, MAKE IT YOURS,
[01:30:03]
PUBLISH IT IN YOUR LOCAL MEDIA AND THERE ARE SOME WHO ARE DOING THAT AS WELL, WHO ARE GETTING THEIR LEADERSHIP SIMILAR TO OURS, TO DO THAT KIND OF JOINT OP ED IN THEIR LOCAL MEDIA.SO HOPEFULLY. BUT ANYBODY WHO WANTS TO TAKE A COPY OF THIS AND HAND IT OUT TO LEGISLATORS IN CASE THEIR LEGISLATIVE ASSISTANT DIDN'T HAND IT TO THEM FROM THEIR EMAIL. YOU GO FOR IT. YOU'RE WELCOME TO USE ANY OF THE INFORMATION FROM THAT TO DO WHATEVER ADVOCACY THAT YOU CHOOSE TO DO. SO WE APPRECIATE THE COVERAGE AND THE FEEDBACK THAT WE'VE GOTTEN ON THAT AND IT REALLY MAKES A DIFFERENCE.
THANK YOU. NO, I APPRECIATE THE TEAMWORK AND I KNOW ALL OF YOU HAVE BEEN SUPPORTIVE.
I'VE GOTTEN FEEDBACK ALONG THE WAY. AND IT'S JUST VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE ALL, THE COMMUNITY, THE PARENTS, THE STAFF, ALL OF US AND STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THAT WE'RE ALL NEEDING TO GET THE STATE TO RISE AND MEET THEIR CONSTITUTIONAL DUTY, BASICALLY, WHICH IS WHAT WE KEPT SAYING TO THEM, WHERE THEIR CONSTITUTIONAL DUTY.
AND THEN ON THE NEXT SLIDE, I ALSO DID SEND ALL OF OUR LEGISLATORS INITIALLY THE BALANCING ACT SURVEY WITH AN EMAIL TO SAY, LOOK AT THE REALLY HORRIFIC DECISIONS THAT ARE FACING OUR DISTRICT.
AND THEN I ALSO SENT THEM THE RESULTS, INCLUDING 100 PAGES OF COMMENTS, WHICH I'M GRATEFUL TO OUR COMMUNITY FOR, WHICH INDICATE EXACTLY HOW DIFFICULT THESE POTENTIAL CUTS WOULD BE TO OUR DISTRICT.
AGAIN, EMPHASIZING, AND I DID SAY THIS TO THE LEGISLATORS, EMPHASIZING THAT THIS IS ONLY 2 MILLION OF THE POTENTIAL EIGHT THAT WE WOULD BE FACING, AND THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATING ON TOP OF EVERYTHING ELSE.
NOT THAT THE LAST YEAR'S CUTS IN THE YEAR BEFORE CUTS WERE IN DEVASTATING, BUT WE'RE REALLY GETTING, AS THE HEADLINE SAID, THERE'S NOTHING LEFT TO CUT.
SO ONE THING I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU IS WE'VE HAD ONE ON ONE MEETINGS WITH ALL OF OUR LEGISLATORS.
WE CARE ABOUT ALL OUR SCHOOLS, BUT IT IS A NEEDY SCHOOL, AND WE KNOW THAT WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE WITH THE KIND OF STUDENT INTERVENTION COORDINATOR, SUPPORT OR NOT THAT'S THE KIND OF SHARING OF DETAILS OF THE PERSONAL IMPACT THAT YOU SEE EVERY DAY AS A STAFF MEMBER AND OR AS A PARENT. THAT CAN BE VERY COMPELLING TO OUR LEGISLATORS.
DID I DO THAT CAREFULLY ENOUGH? OH, THIS IS GREAT.
SO LET'S TAKE A LOOK. GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE. AS ALWAYS, THIS PRESENTATION IS ON OUR WEBSITE.
AND THE NEXT SLIDE IS HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROCESS.
AND THEN THE NEXT SLIDE IS A REMINDER OF WHO OUR LEGISLATORS ARE AND THERE WE ARE REPRESENTED BY THREE LEGISLATIVE DISTRICTS, MEANING WE HAVE NINE PEOPLE THAT ARE REPRESENTING US DOWN IN OLYMPIA AND THE NEXT SLIDE IS, IF YOU'RE NOT SURE WHERE YOU LIVE WE HAVE A DISTRICT FINDER.
I MEAN, WHICH LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT? THERE'S A DISTRICT FINDER FOR YOU.
AND NEXT DEADLINE IS APRIL 2ND. ALL THESE THESE BILLS THAT THEY'RE QUICKLY GOING THROUGH IS NEXT DEADLINE IS APRIL 2ND TO GET THAT THROUGH AND AS A REMINDER, IF WE'RE NOT GOING TO GO INTO SPECIAL SESSION, IT IS APRIL 27TH WHERE WE HAVE TO HAVE A RECONCILIATION OF ALL OF THE BUDGETS THAT HAVE BEEN PROPOSED. SO TIMES MARCH AND FAST LOOKING FORWARD TO SOME CELEBRATIONS AT THAT TIME, I AM TOO. ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS FROM OUR GROUP? STUDENTS? YOU FOLLOWING EVERYTHING HERE? I KNOW YOU ARE.
[01:35:04]
THEY'RE ON IT. YEAH, YOU'RE ON IT. OKAY. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT REPORT.WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOU KEEPING US UP TO DATE ON EVERYTHING.
IT'S SO COMPLICATED. SO NEXT WE HAVE BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS.
[14. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS]
AND WE'LL START WITH OUR STUDENTS. VIVIAN, YOU WANT TO START? SURE. YEAH. SO ONE OF THE BIG THINGS WE'VE BEEN FOCUSING ON MEETINGS A LOT, AND THEN WE TALKED ABOUT WITH THE PRESENTATION TODAY WAS GRADUATION RATES AND I REALLY LIKE THE THEORY OF ACTION THAT YOU GUYS HAVE, BECAUSE LATINO STUDENTS ARE ONE OF THE GROUPS WITH THE LOWEST PERCENTAGE OF GRADUATION RATES AND A LARGE SECTION OF THOSE STUDENTS ARE OUR MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS AND AS IT SHOWED, THERE WAS A LARGE DISCREPANCY BETWEEN THAT AND SO I THINK THE STRATEGY OF FOCUSING ON SMALLER GROUPS, LIKE A SMALLER GROUP WITHIN A SMALL GROUP TO BOOST IT IS SUCH A SMART IDEA AND EVEN THE FOCUS OF SIX STUDENTS, THAT SEEMS LIKE A SMALL DIFFERENCE. BUT WHEN LOOKING AT THE PERCENTAGES, IT'S SO BIG AND I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING WE SHOULD BE THINKING ABOUT AS A WAY TO IMPLEMENT ACROSS OTHER SCHOOLS. I THINK IT'S TOO HARD TO SAY.HERE'S GRADUATION RATES FOR, YOU KNOW, 400 KIDS OF ONE SENIOR CLASS, RIGHT? THAT'S SO MANY KIDS. I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE FIND WAYS TO MAKE THAT GROUP SMALLER AND SEE HOW WE CAN FOCUS ON INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS, INDIVIDUAL GROUPS OF STUDENTS, TO RAISE THAT GRADUATION RATE.
SO I HOPE YOU'RE THINKING OF MAJORING IN EDUCATION OR EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION.
THAT WAS EXCELLENT. VIVIAN. THANK YOU. TATIANA.
HI, EVERYONE. I'M TATIANA. AS YOU CAN PROBABLY SEE FIRSTLY, I WANTED TO SAY THAT I WAS REALLY MOTIVATED AND JUST HAPPY TO SEE WHAT WE HAD AT THE VERY BEGINNING OF THIS BOARD MEETING WITH ALL OF, LIKE, THE STAFF THAT CAME UP AND WAS LIKE PERSONAL ANECDOTES FROM LIKE THE REST OF THE STAFF AND STUFF WAS SHARED ABOUT THEM. I THINK THAT THERE'S SO MUCH UNSEEN GREATNESS IN EVERY SCHOOL IN THIS DISTRICT THAT KEEPS IT RUNNING AND KEEPS IT GOING.
AND THERE ARE REALLY SO MANY STAFF MEMBERS THAT I THINK JUST YEAH.
SHOULD ALWAYS BE APPRECIATED. AND I THINK IT WAS SO GREAT TO SEE SO MANY STAFF MEMBERS APPRECIATED TODAY. AND THAT WAS LOVELY. AS SOME UPDATES FOR MY SCHOOL WE WENT TO STATE THESPIAN A FEW DAYS LAST WEEK, I THINK, OR THIS WEEK.
WE LEFT THE 19TH AND WE ARE MAINTAINING OUR GOLD HONOR TROUPE STATUS, WHICH IS LOVELY.
A LOT OF STUDENTS PUT IN A LOT OF HARD WORK, AS WELL AS STAFF MEMBERS INTO MAKING SURE THAT WE CAN MAINTAIN OUR GOLD HONOR TROUPE THESPIAN STATUS, IF YOU KNOW WHAT THAT IS. AND SO, YEAH, THAT WAS REALLY GREAT.
AND I HAD A LOVELY EXPERIENCE GOING TO STATE THESPIAN.
ADDITIONALLY, WE ARE IN THE ROBOTICS OFF SEASON RIGHT NOW, WHICH JUST MEANS A LOT OF WORK.
SO WE ALREADY HAVE A CLEAR VISION OF WHAT WE'RE DOING AND I THINK THAT ROBOTICS IS A LOVELY PROGRAM TO BE A PART OF, AND I'M SO GLAD THAT THE STUDENTS THAT I AM ON MY TEAM WITH SEEM TO TAKE IT JUST AS SERIOUSLY AS I DO, AND THAT'S LOVELY. MY SCHOOL ALSO HAD A MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCE LAST WEEK, WHICH I HEARD WENT VERY WELL.
I AM NOT A MIDDLE SCHOOLER, BUT MY SISTER IS AND SHE HAD A LOVELY TIME.
I MEAN, PRE-COVID, I REMEMBER THAT BEING A BIG DEAL AT MY SCHOOL, AND THEY'RE JUST NOW KIND OF STARTING TO GET THE SAME AMOUNT OF INVOLVEMENT THAT WE HAD PRE-COVID WITH THAT. AND I THINK THAT THAT IS WHAT'S THE MOST MOVING TO ME ABOUT THAT.
SO YEAH. THANK YOU EVERYONE. THANKS, TATIANA DIRECTOR GERRARD.
YES, I'LL TRY TO BE MORE CONCISE THAN I HAVE BEEN IN THE LAST MEETING.
THIS IS SO IMPORTANT. I MEAN, STUDENTS NEED SINKS, THEY NEED BAND.
AND THAT'S WHAT MAKES THIS BUDGET SITUATION SO DIFFICULT.
I THINK THAT'S IMPORTANT TO PAY ATTENTION TO.
I WANT TO CONGRATULATE THE NATIONAL BOARD CANDIDATES.
SORRY, I COULDN'T BE THERE FOR THE RECEPTION.
[01:40:01]
ALSO, ALL THAT GREAT WORK BY THE EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT TEAM, OUR WHOLE EDUCATION TEAM IS IMPORTANT. ALL THE EMPLOYEES IN OUR DISTRICT, FROM ALL THE UNITS THAT WORK SO HARD TOGETHER TOWARDS THE COMMON GOALS THAT WE HAVE.I MADE A VISIT TO MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL.
IT WAS REALLY GREAT TO SEE THE SCHOOL IN ACTION.
AND SEE SOME OF MY FORMER STUDENTS GROWING UP AND I EVEN REMEMBERED SOME OF THEIR NAMES THIS TIME.
ALSO GOT TO SEE MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL PLAY SOCCER TWICE.
ONCE WAS AGAINST MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL. SO I ALSO GOT TO SEE THEIR SOCCER TEAM PLAY.
I ENJOYED OFFICIATING THOSE CONTESTS. SO THAT IS THOSE ARE THE THINGS THAT I WANTED TO TO MENTION AND I SHOULD BE BACK WITH YOU NEXT TIME. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
DIRECTOR CRAMER. I THINK TODAY IS A REALLY PROUD DAY FOR EDMONDS SCHOOLS.
I THINK IT'S A PROUD DAY BECAUSE THERE'S A LOT THAT WE CANNOT CONTROL.
BUT WHAT WE CAN CONTROL, WE'RE DOING OUR DAMNEDEST AND THAT'S FROM EVERYTHING THAT WE SAW TODAY, FROM THE PARAEDUCATORS, WHO WE KNOW ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF OUR SCHOOLS.
EVERYTHING WOULD FALL APART OR FALL APART WITHOUT THEM.
TO OUR NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED TEACHERS WHO, EVEN THOUGH THEY'RE WORKING THEIR TAIL OFF, FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT EVERY DAY IN THE CLASSROOM, THEN THEY'RE ADDING WORK ON TOP OF THAT TO IMPROVE THEIR GAME.
AND TO THE CEDAR VALLEY STAFF THAT CAME TODAY.
I KNOW I USED TO WORK IN A TITLE ONE SCHOOL, AND I CANNOT IMAGINE IT WITHOUT A FULL TIME DEAN OF STUDENTS, LET ALONE JUST HAVING A FULL TIME SINK. AND AND HAVING A HALF TIME SINK IS JUST.
BUT I KNOW WHERE YOU'RE COMING FROM, AND YOUR WORDS RESONATE DEEPLY WITH ME.
BUT THE FACT THAT YOU CAME HERE AFTER THE DAY THAT YOU HAD AND STILL ARE HERE TO ADVOCATE FOR YOUR KIDS, ON TOP OF THAT, THAT'S A PROUD DAY FOR EDMONDS SCHOOLS.
AND I ALSO THINK IT'S A PROUD DAY TO HAVE OUR SUPERINTENDENT AND OUR PRESIDENT OF THE SCHOOL BOARD AND OUR, THE HEAD OF THE TEACHERS UNION PULLED TOGETHER TO WRITE AN INCREDIBLE ARTICLE THAT HAS BEEN SHARED ACROSS THEIR ADVOCACY HAS BEEN AS LEADING OTHER ADVOCACY EFFORTS ACROSS THE STATE BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY'VE DONE.
IT'S A PROUD DAY FOR EDMONDS. WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT, AND THE MORE WE PULL TOGETHER, THE STRONGER THAT FIGHT WILL BE, AND IT'S GOING TO BE FOR ALL THE BENEFIT OF ALL OF OUR KIDS.
SO THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR WORK. THANK YOU, DIRECTOR SMITH.
I ALSO WANT TO THANK THE CEDAR VALLEY STAFF FOR COMING OUT.
I HEAR WHAT YOU'RE SAYING. I DEFINITELY HEAR THAT AND FEEL IT.
I TAUGHT FOR A YEAR AND ONE OF MY BIGGEST STRUGGLES WAS CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT.
I COULD TOTALLY DO IT ALL DAY. BUT FOR THE KIDS THAT NEED THE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT, I JUST COULDN'T DO IT AND SO WHEN YOU TELL THESE STORIES ABOUT NEEDING THE SINKS AND EVERYTHING LIKE, I HEAR YOU, I FEEL YOU. IF WE ARE IN A WORLD WHERE THE DISTRICT HAS TO CUT $8 MILLION, WE DON'T HAVE, I HONESTLY DO NOT KNOW WHAT WE DO.
BUT I DO WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT ASSUMING THAT THE LEGISLATURE IS GOING TO GIVE US SOME FUNDING, THAT IS AN ISSUE. THAT IS SOMETHING THAT RESONATES WITH ME AND SOMETHING I RESPECT, AND SOMETHING I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU GUYS DO NEED AND THAT TEACHERS NEED.
AND YOU TALKED ABOUT LOSING ADMIN AND STUFF. YOU LOSE NEW TEACHERS TOO.
LIKE, I DIDN'T STICK AROUND BECAUSE I COULDN'T CUT IT. THERE ARE GOING TO BE OTHER NEW TEACHERS WHO CAN'T CUT IT BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE THAT SUPPORT. SO I HEAR YOU, I UNDERSTAND, AND I'M HOPING THAT WE GET SOME BETTER BUDGET NEWS SOON SO THAT IT'S A REALISTIC OPTION TO DO THE THINGS THAT YOU GUYS WOULD LIKE TO DO.
I ALSO AM GOING TO TALK TO DOCTOR MINER A LITTLE BIT JUST ABOUT THE THE COMMUNICATION DIVIDE.
IF WE'RE NOT DOING THAT, WE NEED TO FIGURE THAT OUT.
[01:45:03]
IT'S OBVIOUSLY MAKING A DIFFERENCE. THERE IS ONE THING THAT IS IN THIS BUDGET AND THEY'RE CALLING IT A WEALTH TAX.HOWEVER YOU WANT TO THINK ABOUT IT, AND IT'S 5% OF THE BUDGET.
IT'S BASICALLY WHAT'S GOING TO MAKE UP FOR 5% OF THE BUDGET.
AND I DON'T KNOW, WE'LL SEE HOW IT ALL PLAYS OUT.
BUT WHAT WE CAN ALL DO HERE AS IT RELATES TO EDUCATION IS WHEN YOU MEET WITH YOUR LEGISLATORS, GET A COMMITMENT FROM THEM THAT IF FOR WHATEVER REASON, THAT PIECE OF THE BUDGET DOESN'T WORK OUT, THEY'RE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT OUT ON EDUCATION, THAT IS STILL A PLACE THAT IS SACROSANCT AND WE'RE NOT GOING TO ACCEPT CUTS THERE.
SO THANK YOU. THANK YOU. AND DIRECTOR CHASE, YOU KNOW, IT'S REALLY GREAT TO BE IN SUCH A GREAT COMMUNITY THAT WE'RE ALL OUT DOING THE ADVOCACY AND AND ALSO, WHEN I GO AT THIS POINT IN THE COMMENTS, I CAN JUST SAY THANK YOU FOR ALL THE COMMENTS ABOUT THAT WE'VE HAD.
BUT I WILL SAY THAT IT WAS REALLY FELT REALLY GOOD TO BE HERE IN COMMUNITY WITH OUR THE CELEBRATIONS THAT WE HAD AND A FULL BOARDROOM OF OUR COMMUNITY, BECAUSE OFTEN IT'S JUST US AND A FEW PEOPLE IN THE AUDIENCE.
SO THANK YOU FOR EVERYONE THAT CAME OUT TONIGHT.
I WILL SAY, YOU KNOW, WE ARE JUST FOCUSING ON THEIR PRESENTATION ON, YOU KNOW, THE BIG THREE BILLS, BUT THERE'S A LOT OF REALLY GOOD BILLS THAT ARE OUT THERE TOO. SO YOU KNOW, FOR INSTANCE, THERE'S ONE THAT'S REALLY MOVING ALONG ON IMPROVING STUDENT ACCESS TO DUAL CREDIT. I WAS JUST CHECKING THAT IT ACTUALLY GOT SOME ACTION AND IT'S GOING TO BE REFERRED TO WAYS AND MEANS.
SO LET'S JUST KEEP GOING FORTH AND ADVOCATING FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS IN EDUCATION.
THANK YOU. SO SINCE THE LAST BOARD MEETING, I'VE GOTTEN TO JOIN DOCTOR MINER AND DIRECTOR GERRARD, VISITING MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL, WHICH IS ALWAYS DELIGHTFUL.
I ALSO ATTENDED SHERWOOD ELEMENTARY'S FACULTY MEETING, WHERE THEY DISCUSS STRATEGIES THAT ALL STAFF CAN USE WORKING WITH KIDS WHO ARE EXPERIENCING TRAUMA THAT'S INTERFERING WITH THEIR LEARNING.
OH, IT'S NOT THAT DIFFERENT. BUT MOSTLY WHAT I WANT TO SAY IS WHAT REALLY TOUCHED ME TONIGHT WITH SEEING OUR HONORING ALL OF THOSE WONDERFUL, CLASSIFIED PEOPLE WHO SO RARELY GET RECOGNITION.
THEY ARE THE HEART OF OUR DISTRICT. THEY ARE SO IMPORTANT TO EVERY PART, FROM THE BUS DRIVERS TO THE CUSTODIANS, TO THE PARAEDUCATORS, TO THE OFFICE PEOPLE. THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE THE FRONTLINE PEOPLE, TO OUR KIDS, TO OUR PARENTS. THEY DO SO MUCH AND I THINK THEY ARE UNSUNG HEROES.
AND I JUST WANTED TO REALLY GIVE ANOTHER BIG SHOUT OUT TO THEM.
I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT. WE DID IT FOR THE FIRST TIME LAST YEAR, AND I CRIED AND I CRIED AGAIN TONIGHT, SO THEY'RE WONDERFUL. THANK YOU. I'LL TURN IT OVER TO DOCTOR MINER.
WELL, MANY OF OUR COMMENTS TONIGHT WERE A NICE SEGUE TO ME FOR A REMINDER ABOUT OUR EXPERIENCE EDMONDS EDUCATION COMMUNITY TOUR, WHICH IS BOTH AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE AND IS WAS SENT OUT IN OUR PARENT AND STAFF NEWS THIS WEEK.
IT'S MARCH 27TH, SO THIS WEEK AND IT HAPPENS TO BE AT CEDAR VALLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
I DO KNOW, AT LEAST AS OF TONIGHT, IT'S STILL OPEN ON THE WEBSITE.
I'M ABOUT AT SOME POINT WE DO CLOSE THAT APPLICATION DOWN JUST SO THAT WE CAN PLAN FOR HOW MANY LUNCHES WE'RE GOING TO NEED, ETC. SO IF YOU'RE OUT THERE LISTENING, OR IF YOU DON'T WORK THERE AND YOU'RE HERE IN THE ROOM AND YOU WOULD LIKE TO COME TOUR, PLEASE COME AND JOIN US TO FOR OUR SECOND EXPERIENCE EDMONDS EDUCATION COMMUNITY TOUR THIS WEEK.
WONDERFUL. THANK YOU. AND THIS REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING OF THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT
BOARD OF DIRECTORS IS ADJOURNED.
