[7. SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT-6:50 pm]

THE LAST TWO WEEKS HAVE BEEN A LITTLE BIT OF A TALE OF HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOWCASE THE DISTRICT.

LAST WEEK, SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION CHRIS REGAL WAS HERE, MEETING WITH SOME OF OUR EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT, ALSO TOURING SCHOOL BASE HEALTH FACILITY.

WE SPENT ABOUT TWO HOURS WITH ME HERE IN THE DISTRICT, AND THAT WAS EXCITING.

THEN TOMORROW, WE WILL HAVE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF WIAA MICK HOFFMAN.

HE WILL BE HERE AND MICK AND I WILL ATTEND A VOLLEYBALL GAME TOGETHER SO THAT HE CAME TO FOOTBALL, I THINK, MY FIRST YEAR HERE IN THE DISTRICT.

THIS YEAR WE'LL GO TO SOME VOLLEYBALL TOGETHER.

IT'S NICE FOR HIM TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACTUALLY SEE THE WORK THAT HE DOES WITH THE WASHINGTON INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION IN PLAY IN OUR SCHOOLS, SO PROUD TO HAVE THE CHANCE TO SHOWCASE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT WITH THEM.

>> THAT'S GREAT. THANK YOU.

NEXT, WE HAVE APPROVAL OF MINUTES,

[8. APPROVAL OF MINUTES-6:55 pm]

AND WE'LL TAKE THESE SEPARATELY.

FIRST, I'D LIKE TO HEAR A MOTION IN A SECOND TO APPROVE THE MINUTES FROM THE SEPTEMBER 24TH, 2024 SPECIAL MEETING.

[00:15:02]

2024 SPECIAL MEETING ARE APPROVED.

NEXT, WE HAVE THE MINUTES FROM THE SEPTEMBER 24TH, 2024 REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING.

DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE IN A SECOND?

>> SO MOVE.

>> SECOND.

>> I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE IN A SECOND.

IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE, I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE.

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF APPROVING THE MINUTES FROM THE SEPTEMBER 24TH, 2024 REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING, PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE.

>> AYE.

>> AYE.

>> AYE.

>> ALL THOSE OPPOSED SAY NAY? ANY ABSTENTIONS.

THE MINUTES FROM THE SEPTEMBER 24TH, 2024 REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING ARE APPROVED.

NEXT, WE HAVE OUR PUBLIC COMMENTS.

[9. PUBLIC COMMENTS-7:00 pm]

THE GUIDELINES REGARDING PUBLIC COMMENTS ARE ON THE DISTRICT WEBSITE.

THEY'RE ON EACH BOARD MEETING AGENDA, AND THERE'S A COPY ON THE TABLE WHERE YOU SIGN IN TO MAKE A COMMENT.

WE ASK THAT YOU LIMIT YOUR COMMENT TO THREE MINUTES.

A TIMER WILL BE RUNNING SO THAT YOU CAN MONITOR YOUR TIME.

PLEASE BE SURE TO TELL US YOUR NAME, YOUR CITY OF RESIDENTS, YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO THE DISTRICT, AND THE AGENDA ITEM OR SCHOOL DISTRICT TOPIC YOU'RE ADDRESSING TONIGHT.

PUBLIC COMMENTS ARE MADE FROM THE FRONT PODIUM FACING US AND THE FIRST ONE IS JASON MOORE.

>> JASON MOORE, LYNNWOOD.

I'D LIKE TO THANK THE BOARD PRESIDENT NANCY KATIMS, BECAUSE SHE RESPONDED TO MY EMAIL ON SHORT NOTICE.

HOWEVER, SHE DECLINED MY OFFER TO PROJECT IMAGES FOR THE BENEFIT OF EVERYBODY IN THIS ROOM AND VIEWING ONLINE THAT WOULD REINFORCE WHAT I'M HERE TO SPEAK ABOUT TODAY.

ALSO, AT THE STUDY SESSION, SHE REFUSED TO GIVE A MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC A COPY OF HER DRAFT RESOLUTION THAT WAS BEING DISCUSSED AT A PUBLIC MEETING ABOUT IMPLEMENTING STANDARDS-BASED LEARNING TO THIS DISTRICT.

THAT BEING SAID, I'LL MOVE ON TO WHAT I ACTUALLY CAME TO TALK ABOUT TODAY, WHICH IS THE OSPI REPORT CARD FOR THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT.

THIS PART COMES OFF THE ONE PAGER THAT'S AVAILABLE ON THEIR WEBSITE.

THE GRADUATION RATE IN THIS DISTRICT IS 83.1%.

THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS TEST SCORES ARE TESTING AT GRADE LEVEL KNOWLEDGE 51.8%, MATH,41.6%, SCIENCE, 44.7%, ATTENDANCE, 90% OR MORE SCHOOL DAYS THAT STUDENTS ATTEND, 71.1%.

WE HAVE IN THIS DISTRICT, 19% OF STUDENTS ARE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS.

MOVING ON TO ASSESSMENTS BY GRADE.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS.

THEY SEEM PRETTY CONSISTENT, ABOUT 54%-48%.

THESE ARE THE GRADE LEVEL KNOWLEDGE RATINGS.

MATH, MAJOR INCONSISTENCIES BY GRADE.

THE HIGHEST SCORES ARE THIRD GRADERS WHO SCORE 54.1%, AND THE LOWEST SCORES ARE 10TH GRADERS WHO SCORE 28.7%.

THERE'S A MAJOR DECREASE IN HIGHER GRADES, AND THERE'S NO NINTH OR 11TH OR 12TH GRADE LISTED.

SCIENCE, THE HIGHEST RECORDED IS FIFTH GRADERS AT 53%.

THE LOWEST RECORDED IS 11TH GRADERS AT 36.7%.

WHAT WE CAN SPECULATE HERE.

I'LL JUST SKIP TO THE MATH AND SCIENCE.

RESULTS ARE VERY TROUBLING BECAUSE AS THE STUDENTS MOVE UP TO HIGHER GRADES, THEY ARE SCORING WORSE AND WORSE.

THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY THE SUPERINTENDENT AND THE BOARD.

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO ADDRESS IT, AND WHAT IS THE STATUS OF THESE PLANS? IT'S NOT WHAT YOU'RE PROPOSING. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU. MR. MOORE, I DID SEND THE SLIDES THAT YOU HAD ASKED FOR THE BOARD TO RECEIVE THAT THEY DID RECEIVE THEM.

WE DID HAVE THE INFORMATION THAT YOU HAD SENT.

[00:20:01]

I MIGHT ALSO ADD FOR PEOPLE'S UNDERSTANDING THAT IF A STUDENT DIDN'T TAKE THE STATE ASSESSMENT, THEY'RE LISTED AS NOT HAVING MET STANDARD, AND AS WE GO UP AND GRADES, PARTICULARLY WITH OUR 10TH GRADERS FREQUENTLY, THEY CHOOSE TO NOT TAKE THE ASSESSMENT BECAUSE THEY CAN HAVE A DIFFERENT GRADUATION PATHWAY.

SOME OF THOSE PERCENTAGES DON'T NECESSARILY REFLECT WHETHER OR NOT THE STUDENTS HAVE MET THE STANDARD, BUT JUST THAT THEY DIDN'T CHOOSE TO TAKE THE TEST.

THE NEXT PERSON FOR PUBLIC COMMENTS IS ERIC BERGEN.

>> THANK YOU. TAKING MY TIME.

MY NAME IS ERIC BERGEN.

I LIVE IN EDMONDS, AND I HAVE A DAUGHTER AT COLLEGE PLACE MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND A DAUGHTER AT EDMONDS-WOODWAY HIGH SCHOOL.

MY PRIMARY REASON FOR BEING HERE IS THE SURVEY THAT WENT OUT TO PARENTS ABOUT THE NEW COLLEGE PLACE MIDDLE SCHOOL, SPECIFICALLY THE ONE OCCUPANT CHANGING ROOM IDEA, AND THAT YOU GUYS WERE GATHERING DATA ON COMMUNITY FEEDBACK, AND MY ISSUE IS HOW YOU WORDED THIS SURVEY.

THERE'S THREE THINGS THAT STOOD OUT TO ME.

NUMBER 1, JUST TO READ IT HERE, PART OF IT SAYS THE TRADITIONAL GROUP CHANGING AREAS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL LOCKER ROOMS HAVE LONG BEEN ENVIRONMENTS WHERE BULLYING AND STUDENT SAFETY ISSUES HAVE OCCURRED.

I'M A 27-YEAR TEACHER AT A HIGH SCHOOL ABOUT 12 MILES NORTH OF HERE, AND I CAN SAY ACCURATELY THAT MOST OF ALL OF THOSE THINGS THAT HAPPEN IN OUR SCHOOL AT OUR LUNCHROOM OR OUR BUILDING BATHROOMS, NOT IN OUR LOCKER ROOMS THAT WE HAVE IN THE PE ATHLETIC AREAS.

THAT'S TROUBLING TO ME.

TO ME, THAT'S A BIASED WAY TO PRESENT A SURVEY AND NOT GATHER ACCURATE INFORMATION IN TERMS OF WHAT THE COMMUNITY FEELS IS BEST WHEN IT COMES TO THIS NEW BUILDING.

THE SECOND PART OF THIS SURVEY THAT BOTHERED ME WAS THE QUESTION TO ASK PARENTS.

I DON'T HAVE THAT IN FRONT OF ME, SO I'M PARAPHRASING.

TO SHARE STORIES AND ANECDOTES WHERE THEIR CHILD MADE HIM BULLIED OR HARASSED IN TRADITIONAL LOCKER ROOMS WITHOUT ANOTHER QUESTION ASKING THE SAME PARENTS WHERE THEIR CHILD HAD POSITIVE EXPERIENCE IN PE ATHLETICS AND IN LOCKER ROOMS, BECAUSE THAT WAS TRUE FOR BOTH MY DAUGHTERS.

WHEN YOU ASKED JUST ONE QUESTION THAT WAY, ARE YOU GOING TO GET IN THAT SURVEY OF THOSE NEGATIVE EXAMPLES? I COULD SEE BRINGING THAT SURVEY RESULTS IN FRONT OF THE COMMUNITY AND SAY, LOOK, 85% OF OUR RESPONDENTS HAVE RESPONDED WITH HARASSMENT, INTIMIDATION, AND BULLYING IN THESE AREAS, AND YET THERE WASN'T ANOTHER QUESTION WITH THE OPPOSING TYPE QUESTION ASKED, IF THAT MAKES SENSE.

THEN THE THIRD THING THAT BOTHERS ME IS ONE OF THE REASONS YOU GUYS ARE PUTTING THE SURVEY OUT, IN YOUR OWN WORDS, IS YOUR CONCERN FOR A STUDENT SAFETY.

I PROMISE YOU, THE NUMBER 1 SAFETY ISSUE IN ALL SCHOOLS, CERTAINLY AT MY SCHOOL IS RIGHT UNDERNEATH THE SURFACE OF ALL OF US, INCLUDING STAFF AND STUDENTS IS GUN SAFETY.

THERE'S AN UNUSUAL ALARM THAT GOES OFF.

SOMETHING HAPPENS AT ANOTHER SCHOOL AND IT SPREADS THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA.

YOU SHOULD SEE THE LOOK ON THOSE KIDS' FACES EVERY DAY. IT'S TROUBLING.

I WOULD ASK YOU TO PLEASE PUT RESOURCES INTO SCHOOLS THAT DO NOT ALLOW GUNS.

THERE'S NO WAY ANY OF YOU CAN GO TO ANY OF OUR SCHOOLS HERE IN EDMONDS AND KNOW FOR SURE THAT A KID DOESN'T HAVE A GUN ON THEM IN SCHOOL.

THERE'S NO WAY TO PREVENT THAT.

THAT'S TRUE AT MY SCHOOL.

UNFORTUNATELY, MY KIDS GO TO THIS SCHOOL, AND SO I'M BRINGING THIS ISSUE UP AT THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT, NOT MY OWN TO WHERE I WORK.

I WOULD ASK YOU TO RECONSIDER THE WAY YOU WORD THIS SURVEY AND PUT YOUR RESOURCES FOR A STUDENT SAFETY TO KEEP GUNS OUT OF SCHOOL. THANK YOU.

>> NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS OUR CONSENT AGENDA.

[10. CONSENT AGENDA-7:30 pm]

THIS IS THE GROUP OF ROUTINE ITEMS THAT WE CAN VOTE ON TOGETHER AND DISCUSS AS A GROUP OR SEPARATE IF WE SO CHOOSE.

TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA HAS 10 ITEMS. FOUR OF THEM HAVE TO DO WITH PERSONNEL AND STAFF.

ONE OF THEM IS THE SUPERINTENDENT'S GOALS, AND FIVE OF THEM ARE FIELD TRIPS. DID I COUNT THAT RIGHT? 01, 2, 3, 4, 5. I BELIEVE THAT'S TRUE.

DO I HEAR A MOTION AND A SECOND TO APPROVE TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED?

>> MOVE APPROVE.

>> MOVE TO APPROVE.

>> I'LL SECOND.

>> I ACTUALLY HEARD TWO MOTIONS TO APPROVE AND A SECOND.

IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE, I'LL CALL FOR A REGULAR VOTE.

[00:25:06]

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED, PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE.

>> AYE.

>> AYE.

>> AYE.

>> ALL THOSE OPPOSED NAY. A ABSTENTIONS? TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA IS APPROVED AS PRESENTED.

>> WE HAVE ONE ITEM OF UNFINISHED BUSINESS THIS EVENING.

[11. UNFINISHED BUSINESS- 7:45 pm]

THAT IS A SECOND READING WITH A RECOMMENDATION THAT THE BOARD APPROVE THE PROPOSED CHANGES TO POLICY 3205.

WE DID HAVE A FIRST READING OF THIS, AND THERE HAVE BEEN NO CHANGES BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND READING.

THIS POLICY IS ADAPTED FROM THE WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION MODEL POLICY, AND IS CONSISTENT WITH THE 2024 TITLE IX REGULATIONS.

>> THANK YOU. DO I HEAR A MOTION IN A SECOND TO APPROVE THE REVISED BOARD POLICY 3205, SEXUAL HARASSMENT OF STUDENTS PROHIBITED?

>> I MOVE TO APPROVE THIS POLICY.

>> SECOND.

>> I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND.

IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? THIS IS DISCUSSION AMONG BOARD MEMBERS. HEARING NONE.

SINCE THIS IS A SECOND READ AND WE HAVE DISCUSSED THIS BEFORE, I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.

>> DIRECTOR GARRARD?

>> AYE.

>> DIRECTOR SMITH?

>> AYE.

>> DIRECTOR CHASE?

>> AYE.

>> DIRECTOR KATIMS?

>> AYE. THE REVISED BOARD POLICY 3205, SEXUAL HARASSMENT OF STUDENTS PROHIBITED IS APPROVED.

>> WE HAVE TWO ITEMS OF NEW BUSINESS.

>> I MOVE TO APPROVE.

>> IS THERE A SECOND?

>> I'LL SECOND.

>> I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND.

IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE, I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.

>> DIRECTOR GARRARD?

>> AYE.

>> I MOVE TO APPROVE.

>> IS THERE A SECOND?

>> SECOND.

>> I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND.

IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE VOTERS.

THE COST FOR THIS NOW IS COMING THROUGH THE 2024 BOND THAT OUR VOTERS VERY GRACIOUSLY AND SUPPORTIVELY APPROVED SO THAT WE'RE ABLE TO GO AHEAD WITH THIS WORK.

I WANT TO THANK THE VOTERS FOR THEIR SUPPORT AND APPROVAL OF KEEPING OUR SCHOOLS UP-TO-DATE.

ANY OTHER DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE, I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.

>> DIRECTOR GARRARD?

>> AYE.

>> DIRECTOR KATIMS.

>> AYE. THE AUTHORIZATION FOR THE CONTRACT AWARD FOR THE GENERAL CONTRACTOR/CONSTRUCTION MANAGER FOR THE NEW MIDDLE SCHOOL PROJECT AND PRELIMINARY BUDGET AUTHORIZATION ARE APPROVED.

NEXT IS THE LEGISLATIVE UPDATE.

[13. LEGISLATIVE UPDATES]

DIRECTOR CHASE.

>> THANK YOU, DIRECTOR KATIMS. WE ARE WORKING ON THE DRAFT OF OUR LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES FOR THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND THOSE ARE IN PROCESS RIGHT NOW.

WE ALSO HAVE THE WSSDA IS HOSTING THE LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE MEETING FOR 2024 IN PREPARATION FOR 2025 THIS COMING WEEKEND.

WELL, THEY'LL BE REVIEWING THE RESULTS OF THE STATEWIDE LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES.

RECALL THAT WE ADOPTED OUR PRIORITIES A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, AND THEY'VE BEEN SUBMITTED TO WSSDA, SO WE'LL BE HAVING A REVIEW ON HOW THAT AND THEN TALKING ABOUT SHARING OUR DISTRICT PRIORITIES,

[00:30:01]

ORGANIZING THE MEETING SCHEDULES, AND SUCH.

THAT WILL BE HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND.

ALSO, I WANT TO REMIND EVERYONE THAT THE EDUCATION FUNDING TOWN HALL IS GOING TO BE AT EDMONDS-WOODWAY, OCTOBER 23RD FROM 6:00-7:30.

DR. KATIMS, YOU CAN, I'M SURE, SHARE MORE ABOUT THAT IN THE DETAILS, AS YOU HAVE BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN HELPING GET THAT GOING.

THAT'S ACTUALLY ALL I'VE GOT RIGHT THIS SECOND.

>> THANK YOU. IN MY COMMENTS, I'LL GIVE MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE TOWN HALL ON OCTOBER 23RD.

ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON IN TERMS OF LEGISLATIVE UPDATES? DR. CHASE, WE REALLY APPRECIATE ALL OF YOUR WORK IN THIS AREA AND KEEPING US SURPRISED.

NEXT, ARE BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS.

[14. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS]

WE'LL START WITH OUR STUDENTS.

TATIANA, YOU WANT TO START?

>> HI, EVERYONE. I'M TATIANA LINDBERG, AND I'M FROM EDMONDS HEIGHTS.

JUST A QUICK UPDATE.

FIRST OF ALL, ROBOTICS IS GETTING MOVING.

OUR SCHOOL IS HOSTING LEAGUE MEET 1 AND LEAGUE MEET 2, WHICH IS PRETTY EXCITING, AND OUR WHOLE SCHOOL GETS TO COME AND SUPPORT OUR ROBOTS, WHICH IS REALLY COOL AND A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO COLLABORATE AND LEARN FROM OTHER TEAMS, WHICH I'VE REALLY ENJOYED IN THE PAST, AND I'M EXCITED TO PARTICIPATE AGAIN THIS YEAR.

OUR SCHOOL ALSO HAS GROWN ITS ASB THIS YEAR.

IN THE PAST, WE HAVEN'T HAD AS MUCH INTEREST, BUT THIS YEAR IT'S REALLY GROWN, AND THERE'S A LOT MORE STUDENTS THAT ARE SHARING THEIR VOICES, AND THAT'S REALLY AMAZING.

OUR [INAUDIBLE] ALSO HELD A BOO BASH, WHICH IS COMPLETELY STUDENT-LED, WHICH WAS REALLY AWESOME TO HAVE SO MANY FAMILIES COME AND PARTICIPATE AND BE EXCITED TOGETHER.

I'M REALLY ENJOYING WHAT'S GOING ON RECENTLY AND JUST SO MUCH STUDENT INVOLVEMENT REALLY THIS YEAR, ESPECIALLY SINCE COVID, SO THAT'S REALLY AMAZING. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU. GOOD REPORT.

APPRECIATE THAT. SCARLET.

>> HI, EVERYONE. MY NAME IS SCARLETT AND I'M A JUNIOR AT EDMONDS-WOODWAY HIGH SCHOOL.

RECENTLY, WE HELD A CLUB FAIR, ACTUALLY, YESTERDAY IN THE GYM DURING LUNCH.

IT SHOWCASED SOME OF OUR CLUBS LIKE TSA, DECCA, BSU, KEY CLUB, STUDENTS SAVING SERMON, AND SO MUCH MORE.

THERE WERE SOME NEW AND RETURNING CLUBS.

THEN FOR SPORTS, TONIGHT, THERE IS A GIRLS JV AND VARSITY SOCCER GAME AGAINST SHOREWOOD AND THIS THURSDAY, THERE WILL BE A JV AND VARSITY AGAINST MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL.

THEN TONIGHT FOR VOLLEYBALL, THERE IS A JV AND VARSITY GAME AGAINST LYNNWOOD.

OUR HOMECOMING IS SCHEDULED TO BE NEXT WEEK, SO A LOT OF STUDENTS ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU. GOOD THINGS GOING ON. VIVIAN.

>> I'M VIVIAN. I'M A SENIOR AT MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL, AND THIS WEEK IS OUR SCHOOL'S HOMECOMING.

THERE'S BEEN SPIRIT DAYS, AND PEOPLE ARE VERY EXCITED.

YESTERDAY, WE HAD AN OPEN HOUSE AT OUR SCHOOL SO OUR COMMUNITY COULD COME IN AND SEE ALL OF OUR HALLWAYS DECORATED BY CLASSES THAT EVERYONE WORKED VERY HARD ON OVER THE WEEKEND, 12 HOUR DAYS.

SHOUT OUT TO OUR ASB MEMBERS.

THIS FRIDAY IS OUR HOMECOMING GAME AT 8:00 PM AT THE EDMOND STADIUM AGAINST SHOREWOOD.

HOPEFULLY, IT GOES GOOD.

>> GO HAWKS. AMINA.

>> HI, EVERYONE. MY NAME IS AMINA.

I'M A SENIOR AT MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL.

WE HAD OUR HOMECOMING LAST SATURDAY.

IT WAS ONE OF THE BIGGEST THAT WE'VE SEEN SO FAR.

WE HAD A LOT OF INVOLVEMENT IN THE SPIRIT DAYS AS WELL AS AT HOMECOMING THERE WAS A LOT OF STUDENTS.

I SAW A LOT OF FRESHMEN THERE, SO I'M GLAD THAT THE FRESHMEN IS ENJOYING HIGH SCHOOL.

ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS WOULD BE, I BELIEVE, TWO FRIDAYS AGO, MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL WENT AGAINST EDMONDS-WOODWAY, AND WE BEAT THEM THE FIRST TIME IN THREE YEARS WITH THE SCORE OF 34 TO 27.

I'M REALLY HAPPY ABOUT THAT.

THAT'S ABOUT EVERYTHING FOR ME.

>> IT'S AN EXCITING TIME, THE FALL AND HOMECOMING. SANTIAGO.

>> HI, EVERYONE. I'M SANTIAGO.

I'M A SENIOR AT LYNNWOOD.

ONE THING FOR LYNNWOOD ASB, WE CURRENTLY STARTED THIS NEW THING CALLED ROYAL RUNDOWNS, AND EVERY MONDAY DURING ADVISORY.

THEY'LL HOST LITTLE VIDEOS ABOUT FUN SCHOOL SPORTS ACTIVITIES OR CLUB UPDATES AND I THINK THAT'S A REALLY COOL WAY TO GET THE SCHOOL INVOLVED.

OUR HOMECOMING IS NEXT WEEK WITH A BUNCH OF COOL AND FUN SPIRIT DAY, SO I'M REALLY REALLY EXCITED FOR THAT.

I BELIEVE CURRICULUM NIGHT FOR LYNNWOOD IS EITHER TONIGHT OR TOMORROW.

I THINK IT'S TOMORROW. I'LL BE GOING TO THAT AND SEEING WHAT IS NEW WITH ALL OF OUR CLASSES IN SCHOOLS.

>> GREAT. THANK YOU. DIRECTOR GARRARD.

[00:35:02]

>> THANK YOU. IN THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS, I WAS ABLE TO MAKE A ATTEND WITH OUR SUPERINTENDENT, A VISIT TO SPRUCE ELEMENTARY.

I HAD NOT BEEN THERE SINCE IT WAS REMODELED.

IT'S A STUNNING SCHOOL, AND I REALLY ENJOYED THE LIBRARY IN PARTICULAR.

ALSO, I WAS INTERESTED THAT THE SECOND GRADE CLASS HAD DISCOVERED THE PACIFIC TREE FROGS HAD MOVED INTO THE PROPERTY THAT DIDN'T USED TO BE THERE.

AND THEY FELT LIKE SOME OF THEIR SCHOOLMATES WERE NOT TREATING THEM VERY WELL SO THEY WERE SETTING OUT TO EDUCATE THE REST OF THE SCHOOL ABOUT PACIFIC TREE FROGS.

UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THEIR SECOND GRADE TEACHER, DR. WARMOUTH.

IS IT WARMOUTH?

>> WARMOUTH.

>> WARMOUTH. LATER, SOMEONE MENTIONED TO ME, DID THEY KNOW ABOUT THE FROG LADY IN EDMONDS? I WAS ABLE TO CONNECT HER TO THE FROG LADY, SO MAYBE SHE HAS ANOTHER RESOURCE TO SUPPORT HER PROJECT THERE.

THAT WAS REALLY A WONDERFUL VISIT, SO THANKS TO ALL THE STAFF AND STUDENTS AT SPRUCE.

WE HAD A STUDY SESSION A WEEK AGO ON THE CTE, CAREER IN TECHNICAL EDUCATION.

WAS VERY ILLUMINATING.

WE HAVE A LOT OF OPTIONS FOR STUDENTS TO PURSUE PREPARATION FOR CAREERS IN DIFFERENT AREAS THAT MAYBE DON'T ALL REQUIRE OR MANY OF WHICH DO NOT REQUIRE ATTENDING FOUR-YEAR UNIVERSITY.

IT WAS REALLY NICE TO SEE THAT AND LEARN MORE ABOUT THAT.

LAST WEEKEND WAS THE FOUNDATION FOR EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT FUN RUN/WALK.

I GOT TO DO WALKING THIS TIME.

BUT WE DID HAVE SOME OF OUR INTREPID CABINET MEMBERS RUNNING.

THE PART I REALLY ENJOYED ABOUT THAT WAS BEING ABLE TO SEE THE DRUM LINES FROM THE HIGH SCHOOLS.

I THINK THERE WAS A KOREAN GROUP AS WELL THAT WAS BASED AT ONE OF THE HIGH SCHOOLS.

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE, I THINK IT WAS. WAS IT?

>> THEIR LEADER IS ACTUALLY PART OF OUR FISCAL SERVICES TEAM HERE IN THE DISTRICT.

THE STUDENT PARTICIPANTS DO SPAN THE WHOLE DISTRICT, SO I'M NOT SURE WHERE THEIR HOME BASE IS.

>> GREAT. THANKS. I HAD A FORMER STUDENT IN THE EDMONDS-WOODWAY DRUM LINE AND A FORMER STUDENT IN THE MOUNTLAKE TERRACE DRUM LINE, SO IT WAS GREAT TO SEE THEM.

SPEAKING OF MOUNTLAKE TERRACE AND EDMONDS-WOODWAY GIRLS SOCCER, THURSDAY, I GET TO OFFICIATE THERE, SO I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THE SCHOOLS COMPETE AND KEEPING IT FAIR. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU. IT'S HARD TO BE OBJECTIVE.

WELL, YOU HAVE TO BE OBJECTIVE.

THEY BOTH ARE. IT'S GREAT.

DIRECTOR SMITH.

>> FIRST AND FOREMOST, I WANTED TO THANK OUR STUDENTS FOR COMING IN WITH THEIR ART.

I DID GET A CHANCE TO SEE SOME OF THE STUFF ON THE WEBSITE PREVIOUSLY, BUT I WISH THAT I WAS THERE.

IT IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS IS TO GET TO SEE THEM AND BE PART OF THAT.

REGRETTABLY I WASN'T ABLE TO ATTEND, BUT I DO WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT I GIVE A SPECIAL SHOUT OUT TO THEM BECAUSE IT IS PROBABLY ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS TO GET TO SEE OUR STUDENTS WORK.

I DO ALSO WANTED TO JUST MAKE QUICK MENTION THAT BECAUSE GRADING CAME UP, IT IS A THING THAT WE ARE LOOKING AT VERY SERIOUSLY THIS YEAR.

IT'S REALLY ONE OF OUR FOCUSES FOR THIS YEAR.

STAY TUNED FOR HOW WE'RE GOING TO ADDRESS SOME OF OUR GRADING THINGS AND HOW HOPEFULLY WE'LL BE ABLE TO GET OUR GRAD RATES UP BY LOOKING AT MASTERY BASED THINGS VERSUS JUST SOME OTHER OF THE SOFTER SKILLS THAT WE SEE.

WE WANT TO MAKE SURE OUR STUDENTS ARE PREPARED GOING TO THE NEXT PORTION OF THEIR LIVES.

WE THINK THAT WE'RE HEADING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION ON THAT.

JUST TO THE COMMENTS THAT WERE MADE EARLIER, WE ARE TAKING THAT VERY SERIOUSLY AND THAT IS TOP OF MIND FOR US.

THAT'S ABOUT IT. I THINK I'LL BE BACK FOR NEXT MEETING IN PERSON, WHICH I'M VERY EXCITED FOR.

I WILL SEE YOU ALL IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS.

[00:40:01]

>> GREAT, DIRECTOR SMITH. THANK YOU.

WE KNOW YOU'RE ON A DIFFERENT TIME ZONE, SO WE APPRECIATE HOW LATE IT IS FOR YOU. DIRECTOR CHASE.

>> YEAH, THANK YOU. BEING ON ZOOM FOR THE MEETING AFFORDS ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO WATCH IT AS A WEBINAR.

I WANT TO SAY I REALLY ENJOY SEEING THE SEATS FILLED BY FUTURE LEADERS IN OUR DISTRICT.

I NEGLECTED TO GIVE A GREAT SHOUT OUT TO CURTIS CAMPBELL, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS, WHO HAS BEEN WORKING ON HELPING GET OUR ONE PAGE OF THE LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES TOGETHER.

IT'S LOOKING REALLY GOOD, AND I DO, DEFINITELY LOOKING FORWARD TO SHARING THIS WITH EVERYONE.

WE DID BREAK IT INTO THREE ON MEETING REQUIREMENTS FOR SPECIAL ED, STUDENT HEALTH SAFETY AND WELL BEING, AND OF COURSE, CENTERING, PROVIDING RESOURCES FOR AMPLE, EQUITABLE, AND STABLE EDUCATION AND I REALLY DO LOOK FORWARD TO HAVING A MORE IN DEPTH CONVERSATION AS WE MOVE FORWARD WITH THESE PRIORITIES AND THINKING ABOUT EDUCATION FUNDING.

THAT'S ALL I'VE GOT FOR RIGHT NOW.

I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL MY COLLEAGUES AND I LOVE SEEING STUDENT ART ALSO.

>> THANK YOU, DIRECTOR CHASE.

WE APPRECIATE YOUR BEING WILLING TO BE PART OF THIS.

WE KNOW YOU'RE DEALING WITH A FAMILY EMERGENCY, SO WE APPRECIATE YOU BEING HERE.

IT SHOWS A LOT OF COMMITMENT.

SEVERAL OF YOU HAVE ALREADY MENTIONED SOME OF THE THINGS I WAS GOING TO MENTION, SO I WON'T BE REDUNDANT.

BUT I DID WANT TO REITERATE HOW MUCH I ENJOYED THE CHRIS RICHTER VISIT.

PARTICULARLY, I WENT TO THE MEADOWDALE MIDDLE SCHOOL PART OF HIS VISIT.

HE HAD A Q&A WITH THE STUDENTS.

IT WAS ABOUT 38TH GRADE KIDS WHERE HE ASKED THEM QUESTIONS.

A LOT OF FOCUS ON AI AND HIS WANTING TO UNDERSTAND BETTER HOW STUDENTS WERE DEALING WITH AI, HOW THEY'RE USING AI, AND THINKING ABOUT THE IMPACTS.

OBVIOUSLY, THEY'RE DOING PLANNING AT THE STATE LEVEL IN TERMS OF THAT, BUT HE REALLY LISTENED CAREFULLY TO THEM.

HE ASKED HIM ABOUT A NUMBER OF OTHER THINGS, AND HE ASKED THEM QUESTIONS.

THE KIDS MOSTLY HAD SOME GREAT QUESTIONS OF HIM.

IT WAS I THOUGHT AN EXCELLENT Q&A AND DISCUSSION.

BUT ONE OF THE KIDS, AND THIS IS GOING TO LEAD ME TO THE SECOND THING I WANT TO TALK ABOUT, ACTUALLY SAID, AND WHAT ABOUT THOSE BUDGET CUTS? WHAT'S CAUSING THAT? I WAS REALLY PLEASED THAT THE STUDENT REALIZED THAT IT'S A STATE LEVEL SITUATION THAT'S GOING ON THERE.

I DID WANT TO FOLLOW UP ON DIRECTOR CHASE'S COMMENT ABOUT THE LEGISLATIVE UPDATE.

EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT AND NORTH SHORE SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND SHORELINE SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE COLLABORATING ON WHAT IS BEING CALLED A K-12 FUNDING CRISIS, TOWN HALL ON OCTOBER 23RD.

WE HOPE STUDENTS WILL COME, AS WELL AS THE COMMUNITY AND STAFF AND EVERYBODY WHO CARES ABOUT PUBLIC EDUCATION.

IT'S GOING TO BE AT EDMONDS-WOODWAY HIGH SCHOOL 6-7:30.

I CAN SEND YOU A LINK TO REGISTER. IT'S FREE.

IT'S OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. IF YOU DON'T HAVE A TICKET, YOU CAN JUST COME ANYWAY.

BUT WE'RE TRYING TO GET A SENSE OF HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL BE THERE SO THAT WE CAN HAVE HANDOUTS AND SEATING AND EVERYTHING SET UP.

WE CURRENTLY HAVE OVER 700 PEOPLE WHO HAVE SIGNED UP.

WE KNOW WE'RE GOING TO GET GOOD PARTICIPATION, BUT WE REALLY WANT THE 10 LEGISLATORS WHO REPRESENT ALL FIVE OF THE LEGISLATIVE DISTRICTS THAT SERVE THESE THREE SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE GOING TO BE THERE.

IT'S SET UP SO THAT HALF OF IT IS DESIGNED TO REALLY EDUCATE THE LEGISLATORS AND THE AUDIENCE ABOUT WHAT SOME OF THE CAUSES AND IMPACTS ARE OF THE FUNDING CRISIS, WHICH IS REALLY CAUSED BY INADEQUATE STATE FUNDING, FLAWED FORMULAS THAT ARE USED.

A LOT OF REASONS THAT WE'LL BE TALKING ABOUT.

THEN HALF OF IT IS GOING TO BE WHERE WE GO INTO BREAKOUTS, AND EVERYBODY CAN GO TO SPEAK TO THE STATE LEGISLATORS WHO SERVE THEIR LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT WITH A Q&A.

IT'S A COMBINATION OF BOTH.

WE REALLY ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO COME.

WE ALSO HAVE HAD MEDIA COVERAGE ALREADY ON IT.

SOME PEOPLE HAVE SEEN.

PEOPLE AT THE GYM STOP ME AND SAID, I SAW YOU ON TV. I'M LIKE, GREAT.

BUT KING 5 COVERED THE FUNDING CRISIS TOWN HALL THAT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE AND TIED IT TO THE PROBLEMS THAT ARE GOING ON IN DISTRICTS ACROSS THE STATE.

THERE WILL BE MORE MEDIA THERE AS WELL.

BUT WE'RE HOPING THAT THIS IS JUST ANOTHER IMPORTANT STEP TOWARD ALL OF THE WORK IN

[00:45:07]

ADVOCATING AT THE STATE LEVEL FOR THEY'RE MEETING THEIR CONSTITUTIONAL DUTY TO FULLY FUND PUBLIC EDUCATION, WHICH ISN'T HAPPENING NOW, WHICH IS WHY ALL OF THE BUDGET CUTS THAT ARE HAPPENING HAVE BEEN HAPPENING.

IF ANYBODY WANTS MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME ON THAT.

WITH THAT, I'LL TURN IT OVER TO DR. MINOR.

>> WELL, IT'S FUN TO LISTEN TO ALL OF OUR STUDENTS TONIGHT BECAUSE YOU EXPRESSED GLOBALLY A TREND THAT I HAVE DEFINITELY BEEN SEEING, WHICH IS SO MUCH INCREASED STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN THINGS THIS YEAR.

I'M FREQUENTLY, OR ALMOST EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE STADIUM WATCHING A GAME, THE GATES HAVE BEEN HIGHER.

MORE STUDENTS ARE ATTENDING.

SO MANY STUDENTS ARE PARTICIPATING IN A VARIETY OF THINGS.

I'VE BEEN TO SOME VOLLEYBALL GAMES.

JUST A LOT OF STUDENTS OUT PARTICIPATING AND CELEBRATING.

I'M HEARING FROM OUR ADVISORS THAT OUR NINTH GRADERS ARE AMAZING.

THEY'VE HAD A MORE TRADITIONAL MIDDLE SCHOOL EXPERIENCE THAN SOME OF YOU DID THROUGH COVID.

THEY ARE JUST READY TO HOP RIGHT ON AND PARTICIPATE IN THEIR SCHOOLS.

IT'S BEEN REALLY, REALLY FUN FOR ME TO BE A PART OF THAT AND SEE THOSE EXCITING SCHOOL AND STUDENT EVENTS AND THE ENTHUSIASM WITH WHICH THEY ARE REALLY APPROACHING AND EMBRACING THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE A WONDERFUL TIME IN HIGH SCHOOL.

I ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO GET OUT AND SEE A CONCERT OR A SPORTING EVENT OR SOMETHING. THEY'RE GREAT CONTESTS.

IT WAS PINS AND NEEDLES AT THAT EDMONDS-WOODWAY GAME THAT WAS SO CLOSE AGAINST YOUR SCHOOL, AND IT WAS A LONG GAME AND A STRESSFUL GAME.

AN EVENTUAL WIN IN OVERTIME, BUT VERY EXCITING EVENTS AT OUR SCHOOLS.

I ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO PARTICIPATE IN ANYTHING THAT'S OPEN.

I GET OUT THERE AND CHECK IT OUT BECAUSE THERE'S SOME GREAT THINGS HAPPENING.

>> GREAT. THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY WHO'S PARTICIPATED.

THIS REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING AT THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF DIRECTORS IS ADJOURNED.
