SIMILARLY, WE WE ASK EVERYONE IN THE AUDIENCE TO PLEASE SHOW RESPECT BY LISTENING QUIETLY WITHOUT TALKING OR WHISPERING TO EACH OTHER SO THAT EVERYONE CAN HEAR EACH COMMENT.
TONIGHT WE HAVE 6 PEOPLE WHO SIGNED UP.
THE FIRST ONE IS TONY SHAPIRO.
WHAT ASPIRATIONS DOES THIS BOARD IMPARTING TO OUR STUDENTS? IS OUR GENERATION COMPRISED OF A RESPONSIBLE AND SERIOUS PEOPLE.
DOES THIS BOARD CONSIDER THE ADVERSITIES, CHALLENGES AND CHALLENGES THAT OUR STUDENTS WILL ENCOUNTER IN BOTH THE SHORT AND LONG TERM IN THE UPCOMING YEARS? BLACK HISTORY MONTH STARTED OUT WITH GREAT ASPIRATIONS TO IMPART TO SOCIETY AND THE UPCOMING GENERATIONS THE GREAT BLACK LEADERS WHO INFLUENCED AND LED THIS NATION OVER THE CENTURIES. PEOPLE LIKE HARRIET TUBMAN, WHO LED MANY PEOPLE OUT OF SLAVERY IN THE YEARS LEADING UP TO THE CIVIL WAR, NOT TO MENTION HER INFLUENCE AFTER THE WAR. OR FREDERICK DOUGLASS, WHO BEFRIENDED AND ENLIGHTENED PRESIDENT LINCOLN DURING THE CHALLENGES OF THE SAME WAR.
IF THESE LEADERS ARE NOT CURRENT ENOUGH FOR THE MODERN MIND, WHICH FRANKLY EXPOSES THE SHALLOWNESS OF THE MODERN CITIZEN, WE JUST HAVE TO TURN BACK TO THE 60S, WHEN MARTIN LUTHER KING IMPARTED GREAT PRINCIPLES THAT WE SHOULD BE REGARDED AND JUDGED BY THE CHARACTER, RATHER THAN THE COLOR OF OUR SKIN.
ARE WE TEACHING OUR STUDENTS TO BE SELF-SUFFICIENT AND THE JOY OF HAVING PRIDE IN ACHIEVING DIFFICULT CHALLENGES? WHAT HAVE WE? WHAT DO WE SEE THIS DISTRICT EMBRACING AND PROMOTING IN THE MINDS OF OUR YOUNG CITIZENS TODAY? THE IDEALS, THE IDEALS OF AN ORGANIZATION LIKE BLACK LIVES MATTER TO RENAME A WEEK OF BLACK LIVES BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN HONOR OF THIS GROUP, WHEN WE SHOULD BE CELEBRATING AND DISCUSSING THE SIGNIFICANT BLACK LEADERS HAVE DONE IN THIS COUNTRY.
SOME OF US THINK THAT THIS IS NOT ONLY COUNTERPRODUCTIVE, BUT DESTRUCTIVE TO THE PRINCIPLES AND ASPIRATIONS WHICH FOUNDED AND BUILT THIS COUNTRY, AND BY AND LARGE, HAS STRIVED TO UPHOLD.
BY TURNING TO THIS ORGANIZATION THAT ESPOUSES THE DESTRUCTION OF THE NUCLEAR FAMILY, A MARXIST IDEA, AND ONE OF THE CORE REASONS POVERTY STILL EXISTS AND IS NOW RAMPANT, NOT ONLY IN OUR SOCIETY, BUT ESPECIALLY THE BLACK FAMILY, AS WELL AS RACIALLY EXPOSING CAPITAL.
[00:10:02]
CAPITALISM NEEDS NEEDS TO BE TRANSITIONED INTO SOCIALISM.I WILL CLOSE WITH A QUOTE FROM THE GREAT TEDDY ROOSEVELT, WHICH HAS INSPIRED ME OVER THE YEARS AND EMBODIED THE ZEST, AND HE EMBODIED THE ZEST FOR LIFE AND AN ACHIEVEMENT WHICH WAS SO CHARACTERIZED BY OUR COUNTRY DURING THAT ERA, UNLIKE TODAY.
HE WROTE. FAR BETTER IS IT TO DARE MIGHTY THINGS, TO WIN GLORIOUS TRIUMPHS, EVEN THOUGH CHECKERED BY FAILURE, THAN TO RANK WITH THOSE POOR SPIRITS WHO NEITHER ENJOY MUCH NOR SUFFER MUCH, BECAUSE THEY LIVE IN THE GREAT TWILIGHT THAT KNOWS NOT VICTORY OR DEFEAT.
SO I HOPE WE ARE TEACHING OUR KIDS TO STRIVE FOR GOALS AND OBJECTIVES THAT ARE OUT OF REACH, AND WORK TOWARD, AND LEARN WHAT IT IS TO HAVE JOY TO ACHIEVE THINGS. THANK YOU.
WHOSE LIFE MATTERS ACCORDING TO THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT, WITHIN THE CALENDAR OF THE DISTRICT, MONTH TO MONTH EQUITY THEMES WILL TELL THE COMMUNITY WHOSE LIVES MATTER.
SEPTEMBER HISPANIC HERITAGE OCTOBER DISABILITY AWARENESS I WHOLEHEARTEDLY SUPPORT THIS NOVEMBER INDIGENOUS NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE DECEMBER ALLYSHIP MONTH JANUARY CELEBRATE DIVERSITY FEBRUARY BLACK LIVES MATTER MONTH OF ACTION AND WHAT IS MEANT BY ACTION? MARCH WOMEN'S HISTORY, WHERE WE HAVE A SUPREME COURT JUDGE WHO CANNOT DEFINE WHAT A WOMAN IS.
APRIL ARAB AMERICAN HERITAGE MAY ASIAN AMERICAN NATIVE HAWAIIAN PACIFIC ISLANDER HERITAGE ENDING WITH JUNE PRIDE MONTH.
IT'S GREAT THAT EACH GROUP IS RECOGNIZED AND CELEBRATED.
BUT DOES ANYBODY QUESTION WHAT'S MISSING IN THE CALENDAR OF CELEBRATED MONTH IN THE CELEBRATED MONTHS? WHERE ARE THE EUROPEAN AMERICANS, THE WHITE PEOPLE AND ESPECIALLY MALES? NO REPRESENTATION AT ALL.
DO THEIR LIVES MATTER? ON THE WEBSITE UNDER OUR DISTRICT, IT SHOWS THE DIVERSITY PIE CHART.
IT IS. THIS IS THE ONLY REASON THE POPULATION, THE WHITE POPULATION, IS NOT REPRESENTED DUE TO THE FACT THAT THEY ARE 44.9% ON THIS CHART.
POLICY NUMBER 6600 ON RACE AND EQUITY UNDER THE ENSURE SYSTEMIC EQUITY SECTION STATES IT STANDS ON THREE CRITICAL PILLARS PILLARS, FAMILY, STUDENT AND COMMUNITY.
I PERSONALLY BELIEVE IT'S MISLEADING.
THE DISTRICT IS NOT REPRESENTING ALL FAMILIES, STUDENTS OR COMMUNITY.
IT'S TIME FOR THE DISTRICT TO RECOGNIZE THAT ALL LIVES MATTER.
I WILL END WITH THIS QUESTION.
WHAT WILL YOU TELL MY GRANDCHILD IN THE EDMONDS DISTRICT WHO IS BIRACIAL, THAT ONLY HALF HER LIFE MATTERS? THANK YOU. NEXT IS STEVE KEELER.
GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS STEVEN KEELER.
I'M A RESIDENT OF EDMONDS, WASHINGTON, TAXPAYER AND I HAVE NO STUDENTS IN DISTRICT SCHOOLS.
I PICKED UP A COPY OF THE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS DOCUMENT THAT WAS LEFT AT THE END OF THE JANUARY 9TH BOARD MEETING. I WOULD URGE EVERYBODY IN THIS ROOM TO GET A COPY OF THIS DOCUMENT AND STUDY IT.
HOW WILL FAMILIES BE SELECTED TO LIVE THERE? I SEE THAT THERE ARE THREE PRIORITIES.
[00:15:03]
THAT FIRST PRIORITY.FROM THE FRONT OF THE DOCUMENT, I READ THAT THERE ARE OVER 700 FAMILIES IN THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS. SO THE DOCUMENT TALKS ABOUT FAMILIES IN ONE PLACE AND STUDENTS IN ANOTHER.
HOWEVER, TO GO ON UNDER HOW WILL FAMILIES BE SELECTED? THERE ARE TWO OTHER PRIORITIES.
TALK ABOUT HOUSEHOLDS, NOT FAMILIES AND NOT STUDENTS.
SO I'M TEMPTED TO BE SLIGHTLY ENCOURAGED IF ONE DEFINES A HOUSEHOLD AS ONE OR MORE INDIVIDUALS OCCUPYING A DWELLING UNIT.
THAT THE DISTRICT MAY BE CONSIDERING TO INCLUDE HOMELESS VETERANS.
HOMELESS VETERANS HAVE SERVED THIS COUNTRY.
I WON'T GET TO ALL OF IT TONIGHT, BUT I WILL SAY THIS DOWN BELOW ON THE BACKSIDE.
WHAT HAPPENS IF A FAMILY'S CHILDREN ALL GRADUATE? THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION.
I READ FURTHER HOUSING HOPE CANNOT FORCE A FAMILY TO MOVE OUT.
I'M WONDERING IF ANYBODY SEES A PROBLEM OVER TIME WITH WHAT I JUST READ.
I WILL SPEAK TO THE LYNNWOOD CITY COUNCIL ON THIS MATTER, AND I WILL RESERVE THE RIGHT TO SPEAK FURTHER ON IT IN NEAR FUTURE BOARD MEETINGS.
THANK YOU. NEXT UP IS ERIC HAUSER.
ERIC. KATHY WARD IS SIGNED UP FIRST.
KATHY. KATHY WARD, EDMONDS TAXPAYER.
SO, BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN 1926, CARTER G.
MOVING FORWARD TO 1976, PRESIDENT GERALD FORD CALLED UPON AMERICANS TO SEIZE THE OPPORTUNITY TO HONOR THE NEGLECTED ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF BLACK AMERICANS SUCH AS DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, WHO FOUGHT FOR EQUAL RIGHTS, AND THURGOOD MARSHALL, THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN JUSTICE APPOINTED TO THE US SUPREME COURT, AND MANY OTHERS.
BUT SADLY, WHEN I LOOK ON THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT WEBSITE UNDER THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MONTH OF ACTION TAB, I SEE LOTS OF RESOURCES HOW TO TALK ABOUT RACE COPING WITH RACIAL TRAUMA.
HOW WHITE PARENTS OF WHITE CHILDREN CAN EMBRACE COLOR BRAVE CAREGIVING.
TRANSLATION, TEACH THEM ABOUT THEIR WHITE PRIVILEGE.
NO BLACK DOCTORS, NO BLACK LAWYERS, NO BLACK INVENTORS.
JUST A LOT OF RESOURCES TALKING ABOUT RACIAL DIVISION.
AS A MOTHER OF BIRACIAL CHILDREN.
I WONDER WHAT KIND OF MESSAGE WE'RE SENDING TO OUR BIRACIAL STUDENTS.
HOW CONFUSING IT MUST BE, ESPECIALLY FOR THE YOUNGER STUDENTS WHEN THEY'RE BEING TAUGHT THAT ON ONE HAND AND THEIR BLACK HERITAGE, THEY'RE OPPRESSED, THEY'RE VICTIMS, THEY'RE MARGINALIZED. WHILE ON THE OTHER HAND, THEY'RE BEING TAUGHT THAT THEIR WHITE HERITAGE, THEIR OPPRESSORS, THEIR BIGOTS.
UNFORTUNATELY, WHEN MOST OF SOCIETY LOOKS AT MY BIRACIAL SONS, THEY SEE YOUNG BLACK MEN.
NO ONE HAS EVER CLASSIFIED THEM AS WHITE, ALWAYS BLACK OR AFRICAN AMERICAN.
SO THEREFORE SOCIETY SEES THEM AS OPPRESSED VICTIMS. I REALIZE THAT EVEN IN THIS DAY AND AGE, THERE ARE STILL RACIST BIGOTS IN THIS COUNTRY.
THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK TODAY.
[00:20:01]
THEY ARE NEEDED NOW MORE THAN EVER.PROPOSITIONS ONE AND TWO WOULD BRING TRANSFORMATIVE CHANGE FOR THOUSANDS OF CURRENT AND FUTURE STUDENTS THROUGH CAPITAL PROJECTS AND MUCH NEEDED INVESTMENTS IN TECHNOLOGY AND EQUIPMENT. I MOVED TO THE EDMONDS BOWL NEARLY TWO YEARS AGO, PURCHASING A HOME WITH MY WIFE THAT NOW CONTAINS A TODDLER, A FOUR WEEK OLD BABY, AND A GRANDMOTHER.
MY WIFE AND I BOTH GREW UP ON CAMANO ISLAND AND ATTENDED STANWOOD PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
THERE, WE SAW FIRSTHAND THE CONSEQUENCES OF SCHOOL BALLOT MEASURES FAILING TO PASS.
IT TOOK ANOTHER 11 YEARS FOR ONE TO PASS AND BUILD A NEW HIGH SCHOOL.
IT WAS AFTER MOVING THAT I WAS SHOCKED TO LEARN ABOUT THE SUBSTANDARD QUALITY OF MANY BUILDINGS IN THE DISTRICT, INCLUDING THE MIDDLE SCHOOL THAT OUR DAUGHTERS WILL EVENTUALLY ATTEND. IT IS CLEAR THAT PROPS ONE AND TWO MUST PASS TO ENSURE THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION THAT EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT IS KNOWN FOR CAN BE MAINTAINED FOR GENERATIONS TO COME.
I URGE ALL VOTERS TO TURN IN THEIR BALLOTS BY TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 13TH, AND JOIN LOCAL LEADERS LIKE CONGRESSMAN RICK LARSEN, CONGRESSWOMAN SUSAN DELBENE, OUR STATE LEGISLATORS, MAYORS AND COUNCIL MEMBERS, AND COUNTLESS PARENTS, TEACHERS AND STUDENTS IN SUPPORTING THESE IMPORTANT MEASURES.
THANK YOU. AND NEXT IS SARAH DILLING.
HELLO, MY NAME IS SARAH DILLING.
I LIVE IN MOUNTLAKE TERRACE AND I HAVE A JUNIOR AT MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL.
MY FIRST THING I WANTED TO SAY WAS THAT I SEE ONE OF THE, OUT OF AREA, APPROVALS FOR THIS WEEK IS, TEACHER TRAXLER AND I WANTED TO SAY THAT HE'S A REALLY GOOD TEACHER, AND MY KID IS TAKING AP CHEMISTRY FROM HIM RIGHT NOW, AND IT'S THE FIRST TIME I'VE REALLY SEEN THAT SPARK LIGHT UP ABOUT SCIENCE AT SCHOOL.
NOT THAT I THINK YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE A FIGHT, BUT STILL, HE'S DOING A GOOD JOB.
ALSO, I WANTED TO SAY AFTER SOME COMMENTS LAST WEEK THAT I AM GLAD THAT THIS SCHOOL BOARD AND SCHOOL DISTRICT TEACHES EVEN OUR YOUNGEST CHILDREN AGE APPROPRIATE SEXUAL EDUCATION, BECAUSE THE BEST WAY TO PREVENT A CHILD FROM BEING MOLESTED IS TO GIVE THEM THE WORDS TO DESCRIBE WHAT'S HAPPENING TO THEM, AND PEOPLE WHO DON'T WANT THOSE CHILDREN TO HAVE THAT VOCABULARY.
I DON'T UNDERSTAND ENTIRELY BECAUSE IT IS A SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN WAY TO PREVENT MOLESTATION.
AND YET PEOPLE GET UPSET THAT THESE CHILDREN WILL BE CORRUPTED, AS OPPOSED TO LEFT WITH DEFENSES OR INOCULATED AGAINST DAMAGE. ALSO ON THE ONE HAND, I DON'T CARE WHAT Y'ALL CALL THE MONTH, BUT I APPRECIATE THAT THE STUDENTS ARE BEING TAUGHT DIFFERENT THINGS IN DIFFERENT MONTHS, AND THERE ARE THEMES WOVEN THROUGH ALL OF THE SUBJECTS THAT THEY HAVE, AND THAT YOU HAVE RESOURCES AVAILABLE ON YOUR WEBSITE FOR PARENTS TO SELF-EDUCATE.
I DO THINK THAT MONTH OF ACTION IMPLIES THERE'S GOING TO BE SCHOOL ORIENTED, COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS, AND THAT WOULD BE GREAT.
ALTHOUGH THEY WOULD PROBABLY FIGHT ME.
BUT, BUT BUT YEAH, IF IT SAYS MONTH OF ACTION, LET'S SEE A LITTLE ORGANIZATIONAL ACTION COMING OUT OF THE SCHOOLS AND AT OUR KIDS AND HAVE THEM DOING STUFF, BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE GREAT.
NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS OUR CONSENT AGENDA.
[9. CONSENT AGENDA-7:20 pm]
THIS IS THE GROUP OF REGULARLY ROUTINE ITEMS THAT WE VOTE ON AS A BLOCK AND CAN DISCUSS, INDIVIDUALLY AND OR TAKE OFF AND VOTE ON INDIVIDUALLY IF WE SO CHOOSE TO DO SO.TONIGHT ON OUR CONSENT AGENDA.
EXCUSE ME. WE HAVE 27 ITEMS. THREE HAVE TO DO WITH PERSONNEL.
ONE IS, ASSURANCES FOR OUR CTE PROGRAM IN TERMS OF FUNDING.
TWO HAVE TO DO WITH AGREEMENTS WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS.
TWENTY ONE ARE FIELD TRIPS, INCLUDING MUSIC, DRAMA, TECHNOLOGY, ATHLETICS, LEADERSHIP AND CTE CLUBS.
AND FOUR OF THEM ARE FOR KIDS GOING TO STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS.
[00:25:02]
WOO HOO! DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND FOR OUR CONSENT AGENDA? MOVE TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA.I'LL SECOND THAT. I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE.
AND A SECOND. IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? YEAH. I JUST WANT TO ALSO POINT OUT THAT OF THE TEACHERS I KNOW, MR. TRAXLER IS A VERY GOOD ONE.
AND MY SON HAD A VERY GOOD EXPERIENCE WITH HIM, SO YAY, YAY.
AND I, TOO WILL SPEAK TO THE JOYS OF JOHN TRAXLER BEING ONE OF HIS STUDENTS.
ACTUALLY, I WAS THE FIRST YEAR THAT AP CHEMISTRY WAS OFFERED THERE, AND I WAS IN HIS CLASS, AND I REMEMBER THERE WERE SOME IT'S FUNNY, HE'S TEACHING OUT OF AREA, AND THAT MAKES A LITTLE BIT OF SENSE BECAUSE THERE WERE CERTAIN PARTS OF THE CURRICULUM WHERE HE WAS LIKE, HOW DO I WANT TO EXPLAIN THIS? AND SO ME AND ONE OF MY FRIENDS AND HIM WOULD SIT DOWN AND WE WENT THROUGH IT AND KIND OF WORKED OUT A BIT OF HOW IT WOULD BE SHOWN TO THE CLASS, HOW IT WOULD BE UNDERSTOOD.
AND I ALWAYS ENJOYED THAT BECAUSE IT GAVE ME AN OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE PART IN MY EDUCATION.
AND GLAD TO SEE YOU STILL TEACHING THERE AT MTHS.
UNFORTUNATELY, I GO TO THE RIVAL SCHOOL, LYNWOOD HIGH SCHOOL, SO I DID NOT GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE THE AP CHEMISTRY, BUT I REALLY WISH THAT THERE WAS AP CHEMISTRY AT LYNWOOD.
I KNOW ONE OF THE MOST BELOVED CHEMISTRY TEACHERS, MR. CESAR AT LYNWOOD, IS VERY DELICATE AT TEACHING CHEMISTRY.
HE ALWAYS ENSURED EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS THE MATERIAL AND IS VERY FAIR.
AND I HOPE AP CHEMISTRY COMES TO LYNWOOD AT SOME POINT.
LIKE HOW THERE IS AT TERRACE, DANG IT.
AND I WOULD ALSO POINT OUT THAT MR. CROWFOOT AT LYNWOOD HIGH SCHOOL TAUGHT MY OTHER TWO SONS, AND HE IS VERY GOOD AS WELL.
I CAN'T EVEN REMEMBER THE NAMES OF MY KIDS.
PARTICULARLY THE ONE OF MY KIDS WHO'S MORE IN SCIENCE.
ANY OTHER DISCUSSION? I HAD SOME QUESTIONS REGARDING THE ITEM 9.6.
IT HAS TO DO WITH THE INTERLOCAL AGREEMENT WITH NORTHSHORE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
AND SO I THINK WE MIGHT TAKE THAT OUT OF THE CONSENT AGENDA, DR.
MINER, AND PUT IT AS A SEPARATE ITEM OR DO WE WANT TO DISCUSS IT NOW? I CAN DO IT EITHER WAY.
IF YOU WANT TO, JUST GO AHEAD AND HAVE LYDIA DISCUSS IT.
IF WE COULD BRING UP THAT, IS THAT ITEM UP ALREADY? IF YOU COULD BRING UP 9.6 THE QUESTION AND I'M SORRY WE DIDN'T GET TO THIS.
NORMALLY WE TRY TO EXPLAIN AS I LOOK AT THE AGREEMENT, IT SOUNDS LIKE A GENERAL AGREEMENT THAT SAYS WE AND THE NORTH SHORE SCHOOL DISTRICT ARE AGREEING THAT IF THEY'VE GONE THROUGH A BID PROCESS AND IT MAKES SENSE ON SOMETHING THAT WE'RE GOING TO DO, WE CAN SAVE OUR GOING THROUGH A BID PROCESS AND USE THEIR INFORMATION AND VICE VERSA.
BUT THEN I NOTICED IN THE BACKGROUND INFORMATION THERE WAS $150,000 FISCAL IMPACT.
SO I UNDERSTAND THAT THAT HAS TO DO WITH THE PURCHASE THROUGH FOR FOOD SERVICES.
SO MY NEED FOR CLARIFICATION IS ARE WE VOTING ON THE THE AGREEMENT WHICH IS A GENERAL AGREEMENT, AND WILL THAT COME UP EACH TIME THERE'S A CONTRACT IT'S BEING USED? OR ARE WE VOTING ON THIS PARTICULAR $150,000 PURCHASE THROUGH THIS AGREEMENT? DOES THAT MAKE SENSE? IT ABSOLUTELY DOES.
OKAY. SO WE ARE REQUIRED BY LAW TO, BRING INTERLOCAL AGREEMENTS TO THE BOARD.
SO THAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS.
THE $150,000 BY FOOD SERVICE WAS JUST AN INDICATION OF THE FIRST WAY THAT WE KNOW THAT WE ANTICIPATE USING IT WOULD ONLY BRING THOSE PURCHASES TO THE SCHOOL BOARD IF THEY EXCEED BID THRESHOLDS, AND THEN WE WOULD INDICATE, THIS IS, NORMALLY REQUIRED TO BE BID, BUT IT'S PART OF THE INTERLOCAL PURCHASING AGREEMENT.
SO WE'RE BASICALLY TONIGHT VOTING ON THIS AGREEMENT.
YES. AND THE AND THE FOOD SERVICE IS SORT OF AN EXAMPLE OF HOW IT WOULD BE.
IT WOULD BE LIKE THE FIRST EXAMPLE OF HOW IT'S BEING USED.
OKAY. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? OKAY. HAVE WE HAD A MOTION TO APPROVE? AND A SECOND. YEAH, WE HAVE.
GOOD. THEN IT'S TIME FOR A VOTE.
EVERYBODY IN FAVOR OF THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED, PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE.
[00:30:02]
AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED SAY NAY.ANY ABSTENTIONS AND THE CONSENT AGENDA IS APPROVED AS PRESENTED.
WE HAVE ONE ITEM OF UNFINISHED BUSINESS THIS EVENING.
[10. UNFINISHED BUSINESS- 7:50 pm]
ITEM 10.1 IS A SECOND READING WITH REQUESTED APPROVAL BY THE BOARD OF PROPOSED CHANGES TO POLICY 3110.QUALIFICATIONS OF ATTENDANCE AND PLACEMENT.
THERE WERE NO CHANGES TO THIS PROPOSED POLICY BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND READING.
SECOND. I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? I JUST WANT TO USE THIS OPPORTUNITY.
WE TOOK A LITTLE BIT OF PUSHBACK FROM THE COMMUNITY A FEW MEETINGS AGO ABOUT NOT HAVING A LOT OF DISCUSSION ON ON THINGS AS THEY COME UP, AND IT WAS MENTIONED THAT A LOT OF THINGS ARE DONE BEHIND THE SCENES, AND THIS IS A GOOD CHANCE FOR ME TO POINT OUT LAST, LAST MEETING WHEN THIS CAME UP, I HAD BEEN LOCKED OUT OF MY DISTRICT RESOURCES OVER THE BREAK, SO I DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO DO THE STUFF THAT WE NORMALLY DO BEFORE THIS STUFF COMES BEFORE US.
SOMEONE HELP ME OUT WITH THIS.
I SOLICIT COMMUNITY FEEDBACK, DIDN'T HEAR ANYTHING THERE.
SO I ASSUME THERE AREN'T STRONG FEELINGS ON THAT.
REVIEWED THE DOCUMENTS THAT WERE BROUGHT IN.
THE REASON I MENTION THAT IS THAT WE DO THAT.
ALL OF US DO THAT FOR EVERYTHING THAT COMES ONTO OUR AGENDA.
AND THAT'S WHY YOU SAW ME KIND OF HAVE A MOMENT AT THE LAST MEETING OF ALMOST PANIC.
AND THEN NOW WHERE I'M LIKE, OKAY, I'M COMFORTABLE SUPPORTING THIS.
AND EVEN IF YOU DON'T ALWAYS SEE IT, WE ARE GETTING THE INFORMATION WE NEED.
OKAY, I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE.
AND A SECOND. AND WITH NO MORE DISCUSSION, I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.
3110 ON THE QUALIFICATION OF ATTENDANCE AND PLACEMENT IS APPROVED.
WE HAVE THREE ITEMS OF NEW BUSINESS THIS EVENING.
[11. NEW BUSINESS- 8:00 pm]
THE FIRST IS 11.1, WHICH HAS BEEN CHANGED TO REVIEW AND DISCUSS WIAAS PROPOSED AMENDMENTS FOR 2024.SO, AS I MENTIONED LAST, LAST TIME WE MET, I HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THE INTERSCHOLASTIC ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE FOR WSSDA, AND THAT INVOLVES, LIAISING BETWEEN SCHOOL BOARD DIRECTORS AND THE WIAA, WHICH IS THE, AUTHORIZING ORGANIZATION THAT OVERSEES SPORTS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES ACROSS THE STATE.
EACH YEAR, WIAA REVISITS THEIR HANDBOOK THAT IS FULL OF RULES AND REGULATIONS, AND USUALLY, AMENDMENTS PROPOSED ARE BROUGHT FORWARD BY VARIOUS SCHOOL DISTRICTS WHO HAVE CONCERNS OR HAVE OPPORTUNITIES.
SO FOR INSTANCE, IF A IF A SCHOOL DISTRICT OR IS GETTING INVOLVED IN A PARTICULAR SPORT THAT IS NOT OVERSEEN BY WIAA, THEY MAY COME FORWARD AND SAY, WHY DON'T YOU TAKE HOLD OF THIS AND HELP US OUT? AND THE REASON WIAA GETS INVOLVED IS THEY PROVIDE SERVICES.
THEY PROVIDE THAT INTERFACE BETWEEN, SAY, OFFICIAL, OFFICIALS LIKE, YOU KNOW, REFEREES AND THINGS.
THEY PROVIDE SOME, YOU KNOW, ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT.
AND OF COURSE, THEY PROVIDE PROCESSES FOR, MAKING SURE THAT THE THAT THERE'S FAIR COMPETITION ACROSS DISTRICTS, ESPECIALLY AS MORE DISTRICTS WILL JOIN IN, WITH THOSE SPORTS.
SO ALL THAT SAID, THIS YEAR WE HAD AN ENORMOUS NUMBER OF AMENDMENTS AND THE PROCESS BY WHICH SCHOOL DIRECTORS ADVISE WIAA WE DO NOT HAVE A A REAL VOTE OR WE DON'T HAVE ANYTHING MORE THAN AN ADVISORY VOTE.
WE ADVISE THEM ABOUT THESE AMENDMENTS.
AS I, AS A REPRESENTATIVE OF DISTRICT ONE, WHICH EXTENDS FROM BELLINGHAM DOWN TO SHORELINE,
[00:35:01]
I, I TRY TO GATHER INFORMATION FROM OUR SCHOOL BOARDS ACROSS THAT DISTRICT AND THEN BRING THEM FORWARD.AND WHEN WE HAVE A MEETING IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS WITH THE IAC, THAT WSSDA THE GROUP, AND THAT'S THE VARIOUS REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE VARIOUS WIAA DISTRICTS.
WE WILL VOTE AND WILL PROVIDE ADVICE TO WIAA ABOUT ALL THEIR AMENDMENTS.
AND, AND I ALSO PROVIDED THEM TO OUR, MY COLLEAGUES TO TAKE A LOOK AT.
MANY OF THEM ARE NOT, BY THEMSELVES, VERY MEANINGFUL TO EACH OF OUR DIRECTORS.
SOMETIMES AN AMENDMENT CAN BE VERY SPECIFIC TO A DISTRICT OR AN AREA, A REGION.
SOMETIMES THEY HAVE TO DO, YOU KNOW, IF YOU LOOK AT THE STATE, ACROSS THE STATE, WE HAVE OUR LARGE DISTRICTS, USUALLY ON THE WESTERN SIDE, AND OUR MUCH SMALLER RURAL DISTRICTS THAT HAVE TO TRAVEL FURTHER.
AND THEY HAVE A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF CHALLENGES.
AND SO SOMETIMES THERE ARE AMENDMENTS THAT HAVE TO DO WITH THOSE SMALLER DISTRICTS.
SO THEN THEY GET SOME, YOU KNOW, MAYBE SOME SPECIAL RULES SO THAT THEY CAN ALSO PARTICIPATE IN THE KINDS OF SPORTS THAT ARE LARGER DISTRICTS, PARTICIPATE IN.
ANYWAY, ALL THAT BEING SAID, I PICKED OUT A FEW AMENDMENTS THAT WE COULD DISCUSS.
ESPECIALLY BECAUSE DIRECTOR SMITH I HAVE TO POINT HIM OUT.
HE IS AN OFFICIAL, AND HE AND YOU REF TWO DIFFERENT SPORTS.
BUT GENERALLY SOME OF THE AMENDMENTS THAT ARE RELEVANT TO OUR DISTRICT, HAVE TO DO WITH, ALWAYS HAVE TO DO WITH ACCESS, PROVIDING MORE ACCESS TO KIDS TO THE SPORTS.
THEY HAVE TO DO WITH FAIRNESS, MAKING SURE THAT EVERY SCHOOL DISTRICT, ABIDES BY THE SAME KINDS OF RULES, THAT EVERY KID HAS THE SAME KINDS OF OPPORTUNITIES.
AND, AND, YOU KNOW, THAT THERE'S FAIR ACCESS.
THIS YEAR, BEHAVIOR IS AN ISSUE.
SO THE FIRST IS, REALLY ON BEHAVIOR.
AND WE HAD A COUPLE OF AMENDMENTS.
THE HISTORY OF A COUPLE OF AMENDMENTS ARE ASKING FOR IF A, IF A STUDENT ATHLETE IS EJECTED FROM A GAME, THEY WOULD TAKE SOME TRAINING AND IT'S GOING TO BE AN ONLINE TRAINING THAT I UNDERSTAND, TO LEARN HOW TO, I GUESS, NOT DO WHAT THEY WERE DOING TO TO HAVE BETTER BEHAVIOR. BUT WE ALSO HAVE THE TROUBLE OF COACHES GETTING EJECTED FROM GAMES.
THE HISTORY OF THAT IS THAT WE'VE MOVED AWAY FROM KIND OF THE TEACHER COACH MODEL.
WE DON'T HAVE AS AS MANY OF THOSE ANYMORE.
AND YOU KNOW, ON MODELING GOOD BEHAVIOR.
SO I WANT TO JUST TURN THAT OVER TO THE BOARD.
AND I'M SURE, LIKE I SAID, I LOOK FORWARD TO DIRECTOR SMITH'S COMMENTS IN PARTICULAR.
CAN I CAN I GO BEFORE YOU SO THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THIS ONE UP BECAUSE OF OF THOSE THAT I COULD ACTUALLY MORE RELATE TO.
IF IT'S UPHELD AND YOU DO THE TRAINING, DO YOU KNOW IF THIS TRAINING IS ALL THE STUDENTS TAKE THIS, OR IS IT ONLY IF YOU'RE EJECTED? [INAUDIBLE] I SUPPORT THIS AMENDMENT.
I JUST WAS CURIOUS ON THAT AS I WAS THINKING ABOUT THIS.
TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE WELL, I SUPPORT THIS PARTICULAR AMENDMENT AND YOU KNOW, IF THE OPPORTUNITY ARISES, I'M WONDERING WHERE THE SPORTS CODES IS DISTRIBUTED TO THE STUDENTS AT SOME POINT, RIGHT? I'M SURE, OR WHEN IT'S DISCUSSED.
SO, I APPRECIATE THAT QUESTION.
AND I WOULD SAY THAT, NO, THEY DON'T TAKE THIS AUTOMATICALLY.
[00:40:04]
THEY GET THAT INFORMATION FROM THEIR COACHES WHO ARE SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN TRAINED IN, IN SOME OF THESE THINGS, AND ARE SUPPOSED TO MODEL GOOD BEHAVIOR.I REALIZE SOMETIMES IN THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT, THINGS BREAK DOWN.
SO IT DOES GENERALLY COME FROM THE COACHES.
AND WE'LL TALK ABOUT SOME OF THAT LATER WHEN WE TALK ABOUT COACH TRAINING.
I DEFINITELY, WANT TO SAY THAT I SUPPORT THAT.
AND WHEN WE GET INTO THE COACH STUFF, I TALK ABOUT THAT A LITTLE BIT MORE.
AS FOR THE STUDENT PIECE, IT'S HIT OR MISS WITH ME.
I'M NOT OPPOSED TO IT, BUT THE REASON THAT IT'S NOT SUPER STRONG IS MOST OF THE TIME WHEN A KID GETS EJECTED, A I'M AN ADULT AND I CAN TELL THEM THEY'RE ACTING LIKE AN IDIOT, AND B THEY'RE KIND OF JUST BEING KNUCKLEHEADS.
SO, YOU KNOW, I HAD TO KICK A KID OUT OF A GAME THE OTHER DAY BECAUSE HE PUSHED SOMEBODY AND THEN DECIDED TO THROW HIS JERSEY IN THE STANDS FOR NO IDEA WHAT THE PLAN WAS THERE. BUT THE POINT OF THE MATTER IS THAT IT GAVE THE OTHER TEAM IT WAS A RUNAWAY WIN FOR THAT TEAM, AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THEY ALMOST LOST BECAUSE THIS KID LOST HIS MIND.
AND, HE'S OUT TWO GAMES AND, YOU KNOW, REALLY, HE'S BEEN PUNISHED PRETTY SEVERELY AT THAT POINT.
AND I JUST DON'T KNOW THAT A MODULE IS GOING TO CHANGE.
I THINK IT COMES FROM THE TOP, FROM THE COACHES AND OTHER PEOPLE.
I JUST I JUST RESPOND TO THAT AND, AND THEN LET YOU CONTINUE.
AND SO THIS IS A NEW APPROACH WHERE THEY'RE GOING BACK TO ONE GAME SUSPENSION PLUS THE MODULE OKAY.
[INAUDIBLE] SO YOU KNOW I DON'T NOT SUPPORT IT.
I JUST DON'T HAVE AS STRONG OF FEELINGS AS I DO FOR THE BEHAVIOR OF ADULTS.
AND I DO WANT TO APPRECIATE YOUR SERVICE AS A AS AN OFFICIAL.
IT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO TO HOLD ON TO GOOD OFFICIALS BECAUSE AND PARTLY BECAUSE OF THESE BEHAVIORAL ISSUES, SOME SCHOOLS ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS. SO THERE HAVE BEEN SOME SOME MOVES, LIKE, I KNOW SNOHOMISH COUNTY COUNCIL DID A RESOLUTION LAST YEAR APPRECIATING SPORTS OFFICIALS. AND THEY'RE SO VERY IMPORTANT TO THE GAME.
OUR NEXT AREA TO LOOK AT IS THE NEW SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES THAT ARE BEING PROPOSED.
AND I THOUGHT IT WAS INTERESTING.
WE'VE GOT ESPORTS, WHICH I THINK I MENTIONED BECAUSE MY SON'S INVOLVED.
AND IN ALL THESE CASES, WHAT WE'RE LOOKING AT AND WHY WE WOULD SEE DIFFERENT KINDS OF VOTES, LIKE OUR ATHLETIC DIRECTORS TENDED TO BE OPPOSED TO THESE NEW SPORTS.
VERSUS OUR SUPERINTENDENTS WERE MORE IN FAVOR.
IS WE YOU KNOW, THE ATHLETIC DIRECTORS ARE LOOKING AT THE SPORTS SCHEDULES AND THEY'RE LOOKING AT, YOU KNOW, COMPETITION SOMETIMES, IS THIS GOING TO TAKE SOME OF OUR PLAYERS AWAY FROM SOME OF THE OTHER SPORTS? BUT THEY'RE ALSO LOOKING AT CAN WE GET COACHES AND, YOU KNOW, CAN WE GET A PLACE FOR THEM TO PRACTICE OR THE GYMS AVAILABLE, THE FACILITIES.
BUT I THOUGHT WE COULD WEIGH IN AS SCHOOL DIRECTORS.
HOW WOULD IT AFFECT OUR DISTRICT? HOW IS IT RELEVANT? ARE WE IN FAVOR? YOU KNOW? SO THIS IS ONE OF THE FEW THAT I RESONATED TO AND FELT LIKE I UNDERSTOOD AND COULD WEIGH IN ON.
I DON'T IS THERE ANY DOWNSIDE TO INCLUDING THESE? I THOUGHT I THINK ALL THREE OF THEM ARE GREAT IDEAS.
ESPORTS GETS TO A DIFFERENT KIND OF KID THAN SOME OF THE REGULAR ATHLETIC SPORTS, AND ADDING MORE GIRLS SPORTS I THINK IS GREAT. SO I'M TRYING TO SEE A DOWNSIDE BECAUSE I WOULD BE VERY MUCH IN FAVOR OF IT UNLESS THERE WERE AN OBVIOUS DOWNSIDE, WHICH I DON'T SEE.
I'M WONDERING IF ALL THOSE SPORTS ARE COMPLETELY SELF-FUNDED, OR DOES THE DISTRICT END UP SPENDING MORE MONEY OUT OF POCKET FOR THOSE? SO I THINK THAT WOULD BE THE DOWNSIDE.
YES, AND GYM SPACE CAN BECOME A CHALLENGE.
SO, YOU KNOW, YOU HAVE LIMITED FACILITIES.
ESPORTS NOT AS BIG A CHALLENGE.
[00:45:01]
I'M ASSUMING BADMINTON PROBABLY PRACTICES INDOORS, ALTHOUGH I DON'T KNOW THAT FOR SURE.AND SO YOU CAN HAVE SCHEDULING PROBLEMS. PUSHES SOME PRACTICES BACK VERY LATE IN THE EVENING POTENTIALLY IF YOU'RE SHARING GYM SPACE, DEPENDING ON WHAT SEASON THEY PLAY AND WHO ELSE THEY MAY BE SHARING GYM SPACE WITH.
WELL, DEFINITELY AS FAR AS OUR DISTRICT IS AFFECTED, ESPORTS IS GOING ON.
THE OTHER TWO I DON'T BELIEVE ARE IN OUR DISTRICT AT THIS TIME.
ALL THOSE, CONCERNS ARE REAL CONCERNS.
THERE IS SOME LANGUAGE ABOUT WHEN THEY TALK ABOUT THE RATIONALE, LIKE ESPORTS DOES REQUIRE SOME INVESTMENT OF COMPUTING TIME AND, YOU KNOW, MAYBE SPACE WITH THE COMPUTERS.
THE BADMINTON, NOT SO MUCH BECAUSE A LOT OF THE SCHOOLS ALREADY HAVE THE EQUIPMENT.
BUT THE GYM GYM TIME MIGHT BE A PROBLEM.
I THINK THERE MIGHT BE A OBVIOUSLY, THERE MIGHT BE A CONCERN THAT THEY'RE CALLING THEM.
BUT HAVING WATCHED THESE, I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY CALL THEM MATCHES, I GUESS.
THEY ABSOLUTELY DO USE TEAMWORK.
THEY DO GET SOME OF THE, YOU KNOW, DEFINITELY THE BENEFITS OF THAT.
THEY GET THE LEADERSHIP BENEFITS OF A OF AN ORGANIZED ACTIVITY.
WE'RE TALKING ABOUT IN THIS AMENDMENT IS THESE ARE THREE SPORTS THAT WIAA WOULD SPONSOR, WOULD BE WILLING TO SPONSOR, BUT IT'S UP TO EACH DISTRICT TO DECIDE BY DOING A STUDY OF IT OR A FEASIBILITY OR THE SITUATION, WHETHER OR NOT THEY WOULD WANT TO BE DOING IT.
BUT THOSE WHO WANT TO DO IT WOULD GET SOME EXTRA RESOURCES OR SUPPORT OR WHATEVER FROM WIAA.
THEY WOULD THEY WOULD GET THE REALLY THE COMPETITION, ADMINISTRATION.
THEY DON'T GET THE ABILITY TO COMPETE WITH OTHER DISTRICTS.
THEY MIGHT NOW WIAA ORIGINALLY I THINK THEY PROVIDED THE SERVER SUPPORT, BUT THERE IS ANOTHER AND I CAN'T THINK OF THE IT'S A WASHINGTON ESPORT ORGANIZATION.
THERE'S ANOTHER ORGANIZATION, A NONPROFIT THAT HAS BEEN VERY ACTIVE ABOUT PROVIDING THIS, THIS, SUPPORT. AND SO THE KIDS PLAY THROUGH THEIR SERVERS.
AND I WAS JUST TELLING YOU OFFLINE, THEY HAVE THEIR OWN COMMENTATORS, AND THEY'RE VERY FUNNY.
I'LL HAVE TO SEND YOU ALL, LIKE, A LINK TO THE TO THE YOUTUBE VIDEO, BUT YEAH.
SO THEY PROVIDE THAT KIND OF SUPPORT FOR THE COMPETITIONS.
BUT THE SCHOOLS WOULD STILL HAVE TO, YOU KNOW, PROVIDE THE ADVISOR AND THE AND THE, YOU KNOW, LOCAL SUPPORT. THE ADVANTAGE IS A LOT OF THESE KIDS, THEY'RE ESTIMATING SOMETHING LIKE 60% OF THE KIDS WHO ARE INVOLVED IN ESPORTS WERE NOT INVOLVED IN ANYTHING BEFORE THAT.
AND IT'S IT'S IN ABOUT 70 OFFERING SOMETHING TO A GROUP OF KIDS WHO HAVEN'T HAD THAT BEFORE.
IT WORKS WITHIN THEIR SCHEDULES AND WHATEVER.
THAT WOULD JUST BE MY FEELING ABOUT IT.
ME TOO. OKAY, SO IF ANYBODY IS LIKE SUPER OPPOSED, SPEAK NOW SO I CAN, AND THEN, SO I PUT THE AMENDMENTS 18 TO 21 TOGETHER.
THESE HAVE TO DO WITH RESTRUCTURING COACHES, TRAINING COACHES.
I'M NOT EVEN CLEAR ON WHAT THE WHAT THEIR TRAINING IS RIGHT NOW.
THEY KIND OF KEEP ADDING MODULES TO THEIR TRAINING AND KEEP ADDING LIKE, OH, THEY GOT TO DO IT THIS TIME, YOU KNOW, BEFORE THEY START COACHING AND THEN THEY HAVE TO HAVE YEARLY REFRESHERS. AND I GET THE IMPRESSION THAT WIAA IS ACTUALLY GOING TO DO A BIG REFRESH.
[00:50:06]
SO RATHER THAN SORT OF TAKING EACH OF THESE AND SAYING, DO WE SUPPORT OR NOT, I'M GUESSING I JUST WANTED TO PUT IT OUT THERE.DO WE SUPPORT SORT OF A GENERAL REFRESH OF COACHES TRAINING? [INAUDIBLE] YEAH.
SO PART. PART TWO TO THE STORY WHERE THAT KID FREAKED OUT, AFTER I HAD EJECTED HIM.
ADULT COMES OUT OF THE STANDS, BLOCKS ME FROM GOING TO THE LOCKER ROOM.
JUST TRYING TO GET OUT OF THERE. AND I'M LIKE WHO ARE YOU? WHY ARE YOU HERE? WHAT'S GOING ON? I ASSUMED IT WAS THE KID'S DAD.
AND THIS GOES BACK TO SOMETHING WE TALKED ABOUT AS OFFICIALS.
THEY SHAKE YOUR HANDS, SAY, THANKS FOR BEING HERE.
THERE IS A COACH LOCAL TO HERE WHO I HAVEN'T SPOKEN ABOUT BUT WILL NOT SHAKE OFFICIALS HANDS, WILL NOT SPEAK TO US AT ALL PRE-GAME AND NOTHING BUT TROUBLE WITH HIS TEAMS. SO TO ME IT IS IF YOU SEE A COACH WHO'S COMING LIKE TEACHER COACHES NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THEM.
SO IF WE'RE GOING TO BE BRINGING IN PEOPLE WHO AREN'T PART OF THE DISTRICT AND DON'T, YOU KNOW, IF THEY JUST SHOW UP FOR A GAME LIKE, YEAH, THEY'RE ANSWERABLE THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR.
BUT REALLY, ARE THEY? BUT IF YOU'VE GOT A TEACHER WHO'S IN THAT BUILDING EVERY DAY AND THEY HAVE TO SEE THAT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AND LOOK THEM IN THE FACE, THEY ACT A LOT BETTER.
YOU KNOW, IT'S HERE FOR THE KIDS.
WE WANT TO MODEL THE GOOD BEHAVIOR, AND THE KIDS ARE 100% FOLLOWING THEIR COACHES BEHAVIOR.
I THINK THAT I WOULD AGREE WITH THAT.
AND THEN FINALLY I ADDED ONE THAT MIGHT SEEM A LITTLE, KIND OF ESOTERIC, BUT IT'S IT'S ACTUALLY SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN RELEVANT TO OUR DISTRICT.
WHICH IS SO A LOT OF OUR, OUR STUDENT ATHLETES ALSO PARTICIPATE IN, NON-SCHOOL CLUBS LIKE, YOU KNOW, SELECT SPORTS OR, YOU KNOW, SPECIAL SOCCER CLUB, LIKE SURF OR WHATEVER.
AND, AND USUALLY WELL, NOT USUALLY, BUT SOMETIMES THOSE CLUBS ARE VERY, AWARE OF THE HIGH SCHOOL SCHEDULES AND THEY TRY TO MAKE SURE THAT THEIR, THEIR EVENTS AND THEIR SEASONS DON'T OVERLAP WITH OURS, BUT THEY'RE NOT ALWAYS.
AND, AND SOME OF OUR MOST ELITE ATHLETES, ATHLETES WILL GO PARTICIPATE IN THESE CLUBS.
AND SO THE AMENDMENT IN QUESTION, AMENDMENT 12 IS ACTUALLY, IS TRYING TO PROVIDE A LITTLE MORE FLEXIBILITY TO SCHOOL DISTRICTS BECAUSE SCHOOL DISTRICTS RIGHT NOW HAVE, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE RULES.
THEY CAN'T PLAY IN THE GAMES UNLESS THEY PARTICIPATE IN THE PRACTICES LIKE ALL THE OTHER KIDS.
AND, THIS WOULD PROVIDE A LITTLE BIT MORE FLEXIBILITY FOR SOME OF THESE KIDS TO NOT BE HERE A COUPLE OF DAYS SO THAT THEY COULD GO, SAY, BE IN THEIR NON-SCHOOL TOURNAMENTS.
I'M NOT GOING TO TELL YOU WHAT MY OPINION IS.
I'M TRYING TO KEEP A POKER FACE.
AND I'LL THROW THAT OUT THERE FOR DISCUSSION.
AND IT'S VERY DIFFERENT FROM SCHOOL ATHLETICS.
[00:55:02]
BE IN THE ELITE PROGRAMS, CAN TOTALLY DO THAT.AND THAT AS SCHOOL DISTRICTS, WE NEED TO BE OFFERING OPPORTUNITIES FOR KIDS WHO AREN'T GOING TO MAKE IT IN THOSE ELITE PROGRAMS. SO AS LONG AS THIS DOESN'T IMPACT THEIR ABILITY TO PARTICIPATE AND STILL HAVE A GOOD EXPERIENCE.
YEAH THE MACHINATIONS AREN'T THAT IMPORTANT TO ME.
FOLLOWING ALONG WITH THAT POINT.
I SEE, AND THIS IS A REASON THAT MY COACH, WITH TRACK HAS A VERY STRICT THING ABOUT NOT NECESSARILY TRACK, BUT ALSO OTHER, CLUB SPORTS HAPPENING DURING THAT SEASON.
AND YOU SHOULDN'T BE MISSING PRACTICE AND STUFF LIKE THAT BECAUSE THE TRACK IS NON CUT WITH CUT SPORTS THAT THAT KID COULD BE POTENTIALLY TAKING AWAY A SPOT AND THEN NOT COMING TO PRACTICES AND MISSING GAMES.
AND SO IT'S NOT FAIR FOR LIKE YOU SAID, A STUDENT WHO ISN'T GOING TO BE ABLE TO GET INTO THOSE CLUB THINGS, TO BE LOSING AN OPPORTUNITY AT THE SCHOOL SPORTS TO SOMEONE WHO ISN'T PUT IN THE SAME EFFORT AND DEDICATION TO THAT TEAM.
SO I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.
AND IF I DON'T KNOW IF ANYBODY HAS REALLY STRONG FEELINGS ABOUT IT, I KIND OF DO THAT.
I DON'T THINK WE SHOULD MAKE IT, MORE OPEN FOR ELITE, YOU KNOW, MAKE A DIVIDE BETWEEN ELITE ATHLETES HAVING CERTAIN PRIVILEGES AND, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE OF THE EXPENSE, YOU KNOW, THAT THESE CLUBS ARE NOT OPEN TO ALL KIDS.
AND I THINK VIVIAN'S POINT WAS REALLY WELL STATED.
AND, YEAH, DEFINITELY GOT ME EVEN STRONGER OVER TO THAT PERSPECTIVE.
THANK YOU. COULDN'T BE BETTER SAID THAN WHAT VIVIAN SAID.
BUT I APPRECIATE EVERYBODY'S FEEDBACK AND I WILL TAKE IT FORWARD.
I HAVE TO LOOK AT THE OTHER DISTRICTS AS WELL, WHO ARE ALSO WEIGHING IN A LITTLE BIT.
NOT AS MUCH AS I'D HOPED, BUT SOME.
AND, YOU KNOW, WE'LL GO FROM HERE.
SO THANK YOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR REPRESENTATION FOR US AND FOR THE KIDS.
BEFORE BEFORE WE MOVE ON TOTALLY.
THERE WAS ONE THAT WE DIDN'T DISCUSS.
FOOTBALL IS THE SPORT WHERE I SEE MOST KIDS NOT HITTING THE PRACTICE NUMBER, AND MOST OF THE TIME IT'S I'LL TALK TO THEM AND THEY'LL SAY, WELL, MY FAMILY WAS ON VACATION AND FALL IS THE ONLY TIME WHERE WE RUN INTO THAT.
YOU MISSED SOME SOME OF THOSE PRACTICES, BUT WE'RE GOING TO LET YOU PLAY ANYWAY OR SOMETHING.
SO THAT WAS ONE OF THOSE WE DIDN'T DISCUSS, BUT I JUST WANTED TO GET $0.02 IN ON IT.
THANKS. I THINK THAT'S REALLY GOOD FEEDBACK AND I'LL BRING THAT FORWARD AS WELL.
OKAY. I'LL TURN THE NEXT PIECE OF NEW BUSINESS OVER TO DR.
THANK YOU. DR. KATIMS. WE HAVE TWO ADDITIONAL ITEMS OF NEW BUSINESS.
THERE'S A PARALLEL BETWEEN THEM WHICH YOU WILL SEE.
THE FIRST IS 11.2 A SINGLE READING TO APPROVE RESOLUTION 24-03 DECLARATION.
I'M SORRY. EMERGENCY DECLARATION FOR REPAIRS AT MEADOWDALE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
AS YOU ARE AWARE, WE HAD A SIGNIFICANT WATER DAMAGE SITUATION AT MEADOWDALE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
THIS RESOLUTION ALLOWS US TO COMPLETE THE WORK AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE AND BYPASS THE COMPETITIVE BID PROCESS PROCESS TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE AT MEADOWDALE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, THE PERSON WE WOULD BE USING IS INCURRED NOT ENCOURAGED, BUT IS ENDORSED BY OUR INSURER. SO IT IS SOMEONE WHO THEY, THINK COULD HANDLE THIS WORK FOR US.
AND THE EMERGENCY AS WE WANT TO GET KIDS BACK INTO THEIR SCHOOL JUST AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.
I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE. I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL.
DECLARATION FOR REPAIRS AT MEADOWDALE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RESOLUTION RESOLUTION 24-03 IS APPROVED.
[01:00:06]
THE NEXT ITEM IS 11.3.SECOND. I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? YEAH. I'VE MENTIONED THIS BEFORE.
I'LL MENTION IT AGAIN. MY PARENTS PROPERTY ABUTS THIS SITE.
THANK YOU. ANY OTHER DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE. I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.
OKAY, SO WE'LL TURN TO DIRECTOR CHASE.
[13. LEGISLATIVE UPDATES]
LOTS OF THINGS HAPPENING IN THE LEGISLATURE AND UNFORTUNATELY SOME ARE WELL, SOME ARE GOOD, SOME ARE NOT NECESSARILY SO GOOD.SO HOPEFUL THINGS ARE MOVING ALONG.
SO WE SAY, WE HAVE HAD THE WE HAVE AS YOU SEE, WE HAVE A PRESENTATION HERE.
AND THE WAY WE JUST HAD A PARTICULAR CUT OFF DAY YESTERDAY, THE WAY THE BILLS WORK THAT THEY WERE RETAINED IN, THE END OF LAST YEAR'S SESSION WERE STILL ALIVE, RETAINED THEIR PROGRESS FROM YEAR.
NOW WE HAVE A REPORT, AS THE NEXT CUT OFF HAPPENED, WE HAD YESTERDAY THE THE WAS THE HOUSE OF ORIGIN BUDGET CUT OFF AND ANY BILL REFERRED TO A BUDGET COMMITTEE HAD TO PASS OUT BY THE END OF THE DAY.
AND FLOOR ACTIVITY ON THOSE SURVIVING BILLS STARTED TODAY.
WHAT THIS MEANT IS THERE FROM THOSE EDUCATION BILLS THAT WE WERE TRACKING, DROPPED FROM 127 TO THE UPDATE I JUST GOT TODAY WAS DOWN TO 76. AND IF WE TAKE A LOOK AT THE NEXT SLIDE THERE.
WE'LL JUST SKIP THIS BECAUSE I WANT TO KEEP GOING AND TALK ABOUT THE BILLS.
IF FOR THOSE INTERESTED, WE HAVE A LINK TO OUR, WSSDA LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES AS WELL AS OUR EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT PRIORITIES THAT WE JUST PASSED, AND WE TRACKED BILLS THAT ARE IN ALIGNMENT WITH THESE SHARED PRIORITIES.
THE BILLS THAT WERE IN FOCUS THAT WE'VE BEEN TRACKING HAVING TO DO WITH THE PROTOTYPICAL SCHOOL FUNDING MODEL 1960 AND 58 52, 5852 IS STILL ALIVE.
IT MADE THE CUTOFF. THAT'S STILL GOING FORWARD.
THE TWO THAT THE 2223 PROTECTING SCHOOL LIBRARIES BY INCREASING LIBRARIANS THAT DID NOT MAKE IT 2212 DID NOT EITHER. WHEN I SAY IT DIDN'T MAKE IT, IT DID NOT MAKE THIS LAST CUT OFF.
WE KNOW THAT ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN AT THE END OF SESSION.
BUT AS FAR AS TRACKING THESE BILLS, THEY ARE NO LONGER FOLLOWING THROUGH ON THE PROCESS BY WHICH BILLS ARE MADE INTO LAW AT THIS TIME . THE FOCUS ON SPECIAL EDUCATION BILLS.
WE WERE TRACKING A NUMBER OF BILLS OF THESE ON SPECIAL ED OF THIS LIST THE ONLY ONE THAT IS STILL ON OUR BILL TRACKER IS 2180.
AND SENATE BILL 6014, WHICH LIFTS THE CAP TO 17.25%.
SO THAT'S NOT GOING TO HELP US AT ALL.
IT MAY NOT NOW, BUT IT COULD IN THE FUTURE OR SPECIAL EDUCATION, CONTINUES TO INCREASE IN PERCENTAGE WITH ADDITIONAL STUDENTS BEING REFERRED AND OR MOVING INTO THE DISTRICT.
SO IT WOULDN'T BE NEGATIVE AND IT COULD HELP US IN THE FUTURE.
JUST TO UNDERSTAND AM I CORRECT THAT AS OUR.
PERCENTAGES INCREASE, OUR EXPENSES THAT AREN'T COVERED BY THE STATE ARE INCREASING AT A LIKE OPERATING WHATEVER ARE INCREASING MORE THAN WHAT WE'RE GETTING?
[01:05:03]
DEPENDS ON THE NEEDS OF THE STUDENT.BUT OFTEN THERE IS A GAP BETWEEN EVEN WHAT THE STATE DOES FUND AND WHAT WE SPEND TO PROVIDE A STUDENT WITH THE NEEDS OF THEIR IEP AND BEFORE THEY HIT THE SAFETY NET THRESHOLD.
THAT'S TRUE. AND RECALL AMENDMENTS AND DISCUSSION WILL BE ON THE FLOORS THAT WE CAN WATCH AND SEE THE PROGRESS AND THE EVOLUTION OF THESE BILLS AS THEY MOVE FORWARD.
I'M GOING ON TO TO GO THROUGH THIS.
WE'LL TALK ABOUT THIS TOO MORE.
THE BILLS IN FOCUS ON TRANSPORTATION 5873 DID NOT MAKE THE CUT OFF.
STUDENT SUPPORTS, 2058 DID NOT MAKE THE CUT OFF.
ON LEVEES AND BONDS THE ONLY ONE, LET'S SEE THAT DIDN'T 2458.
DR. KATIMS, IF YOU'D LIKE TO SPEAK TO THIS ONE AS YOU COMMENTED JUST TO.
YES. UNFORTUNATELY, THE FIRST VERSION OF THE EXPERIENCE FACTOR BILL HELPED US TREMENDOUSLY, WOULD HAVE BROUGHT US $3 MILLION INTO THE DISTRICT ON A YEARLY BASIS THAT WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN GETTING.
WE VALUE THE EXPERIENCE LEVEL OF OUR TEACHERS VERY MUCH.
BUT UNFORTUNATELY, THERE WERE CHANGES MADE SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THE FIRST WRITING OF THE BILL WHEN I LEFT TESTIMONY SAYING HOW MUCH IN FAVOR OF IT WE WERE, AND WHEN IT ACTUALLY WENT TO THEIR EXECUTIVE SESSION, AND THEY VOTED ON IT IN THE SECOND VERSION, WHERE IT DOES NOT HELP US BECAUSE THEY REWROTE IT IN SUCH A WAY THAT 19 OUT OF THE 29 DISTRICTS THAT WOULD HAVE BENEFITED FROM THIS NO LONGER BENEFIT.
SO IN MY MIND, WE'VE GONE FROM A PRO TO A CON OR A WE COULDN'T CARE LESS BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT HELPING US ANYMORE, WHICH IS REALLY UNFORTUNATE BECAUSE IT MEANS WE HAVE STRONG, EXPERIENCED TEACHERS THEY PROVIDE MENTORSHIP TO YOUNGER TEACHERS.
THEY DO A GREAT JOB WITH OUR STUDENTS.
AND YET THIS THE STATE IS NOT RECOGNIZING THE VALUE IN HAVING MORE EXPERIENCE AND MORE EDUCATION.
AND I JUST WANT YOU TO REMEMBER IT'S NOT OVER TILL IT'S OVER.
I WISH I COULD UNDERSTAND HOW IT COULD COME BACK.
SO WHEN IT GOES INTO SESSION FULL SESSION, IS IT POSSIBLE FOR A BILL TO COME BACK? IT HAS TO GO TO THE FLOOR NOW, RIGHT? YEAH. AND THERE CAN BE DEBATES.
THIS IS WE'RE STILL TRACKING THIS ONE ON THE BILL TRACKER.
WELL, IT DID PASS. YEAH, IT DID PASS.
SO IT WOULD BUT FOR ONE THAT LET'S SAY DIDN'T PASS.
OH, THOSE THAT DIDN'T PASS WELL UNTIL THE END OF SESSION.
THERE'S A LAST GASP EFFORT THAT BILLS CAN BE BROUGHT UP THAT HAVE NOT MADE IT THROUGH THIS PROCESS.
BUT WE WON'T KNOW THAT FOR A LITTLE WHILE.
BUT YOU'RE SAYING THAT THIS ONE THAT MADE IT THROUGH WITH CHANGES COULD GO TO THE FLOOR, AND COULD IT BE REVISED AGAIN ON THE FLOOR? OR IS WHAT GOES TO THE FLOOR WHAT STAYS ON THE FLOOR? SO OUR LAWMAKERS DO MANY THINGS ON THE FLOOR, AND WE JUST DON'T KNOW UNTIL IT COMES RIGHT OUT THE RINGER.
IT'S A DIFFICULT BECAUSE YOU DON'T, YOU KNOW, THINGS THINGS CHANGE.
AS IT STANDS, IF IT MADE IT OUT OF THE COMMITTEE WITH THIS, I WOULD SAY IT'S NOT LIKELY TO CHANGE.
BUT YOU JUST, YOU KNOW UNTIL [INAUDIBLE].
I'M JUST WONDERING IF ADDITIONAL ADVOCACY ON OUR BEHALF WOULD MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE.
WELL, I THINK THAT ADVOCACY TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR LAWMAKERS HAVE A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING, WE HAVE NINE OF THEM, HAVE A REALLY DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THIS IMPACT HOW THIS THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN SUCH A BENEFIT TO US WITH THIS $3 MILLION, I THINK IS ALWAYS GOOD.
SO WRITING THEM AGAIN ABOUT IT.
OKAY. I'M GOING TO OKAY, I'M GOING TO I'M GOING TO GET EVERYBODY I KNOW TO DO IT TOO.
SURE. AND WE WILL I DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO SEE THE THE FLOOR SCHEDULE.
SO I CAN'T COMMENT IN WHEN THESE ARE ALL COMING UP.
BUT IT'S THIS WEEK SO WE CAN TAKE A TRACK THERE.
AND JUST REMINDING FOLKS THAT BEING ABLE TO SIGN IN, WITH OUR BOARD ON POSITIONS ON THESE BILLS, TESTIFYING IN PERSON AND REMOTELY IS ALWAYS AS, AS OUR PRESIDENT HAS BEEN DOING FREQUENTLY AND WRITTEN, CONTACTING OUR LEGISLATORS AND COMMITTEE MEMBERS IS ALWAYS, ALWAYS AN IMPORTANT THING FOR US TO BE DOING, BECAUSE WE'RE ALSO NOW THINKING ABOUT IT'S COMING UP.
[01:10:03]
FINANCE FAQS WITH THEM.SO THEY HAVE A REAL DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT WE'RE ALL FACING.
YOU KNOW, HAVING THEM COME OUT TO OUR SCHOOLS, WE WANT TO DEVELOP THESE RELATIONSHIPS.
YOU KNOW, JUST AS FORWARD THINKING, PLANNING ON THAT.
ONE THING ALSO IS THE POSITIONS PLATFORM REVISION WINDOW IS COMING UP, MARCH 11TH THROUGH APRIL 8TH IS THE TIME THAT WE CAN, IF WE SO CHOOSE AS A BOARD, MAKE, AMENDMENTS OR PROPOSALS TO THE WSSDA POSITION CATALOG SHALL WE CALL IT? AND THERE'LL BE MORE INFORMATION COMING UP.
IT SEEMS LIKE THIS JUST HAPPENED, BUT I GUESS, YOU KNOW, TIME MARCHES ON.
SO THAT'S GOING TO BE RIGHT AFTER SESSION.
AND WE DID THIS LAST YEAR WITH ABOUT THREE OF THEM.
SO. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? COMMENTS? I HAVE A QUESTION.
IT SEEMS LIKE THE PROTOTYPICAL MODEL LEGISLATION IS STILL IN PLAY.
LET'S SEE WHICH ONE. IS THAT WHAT YOU SAID? SO IT IS.
SO YEAH, IT WOULD GIVE US 26 ADDITIONAL PARA, THE MONEY FOR 26 ADDITIONAL PARAS, WHICH, LYDIA, THANK YOU E STIMATES TO BE MAYBE $2.4 MILLION, WHICH WOULD BE A LITTLE BIT OF HELP.
IT WOULD BE BETTER THAN NOTHING.
AND THE NICEST PIECE OF IT, WHICH I SAID IN BECAUSE I DID MAKE, PUBLIC TESTIMONY ON THIS, IS THAT IT DOES HAVE THREE YEARS IN IT WITH INCREMENTAL INCREASES.
SO IN THE SECOND SO THE $2.4 MILLION WOULD BE FOR NEXT YEAR.
THE FOLLOWING YEAR WOULD BE $4.7 MILLION, WHICH WOULD BRING ABOUT 47 PARAS.
AND THEN MORE AFTER THIS, AFTER THAT IN THE THIRD YEAR.
THE FACT THAT THEY KEEP TWEAKING IT IS VERY FRUSTRATING.
BUT I REALIZE IT'S A SHORT SESSION AND IT'S SOMETHING THAT AND FROM WHAT I CAN TELL, IT'S THE ONLY ONE THAT'S REALLY SITTING OUT THERE THAT WOULD BRING US AT LEAST A EVEN THOUGH NOT A HUGE CHUNK, A LITTLE CHUNK OF MONEY, TO HELP US.
YEAH. KEEP TRACKING THOSE TWO.
AND THEY'RE THEY'RE EXACTLY THE SAME ONE SENATE, ONE HOUSE THEY'RE GOING THROUGH TOGETHER.
THEY BOTH MADE IT THROUGH BOTH THEIR COMMITTEE VERSION AND THEIR APPROPRIATIONS FOR WAYS AND MEANS.
AND THEY'RE BOTH GOING TO RULES.
SO THEY'RE ON THEY'RE THEY ARE ON A TRAJECTORY AT LEAST TO GET TO THE FLOOR.
RIGHT. SO IT IS WHAT I HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE CONTINUES TO HEAR THAT.
AND IT IS WHAT I HAVE DESCRIBED IN WRITING AS BRINGING A WATERING CAN TO A BLAZING FOREST FIRE.
THANK YOU FOR THAT CLARIFICATION.
I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT EVERYBODY KNOWS WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT.
AND THANK YOU, DIRECTOR CHASE.
YEP. THAT'S IT FOR NOW. WELL, WE REALLY APPRECIATE EVERYTHING YOU'RE DOING.
BEING THE LIAISON WITH WSSDA IS REALLY HELPFUL.
I SAW THEM SHOW UP, AND MARISSA WAS THERE.
IT WAS VERY IT WAS VERY EDUCATIONAL, ENLIGHTENING.
THANKFULLY, I HAVE EARBUDS SO I CAN WALK AROUND THE HOUSE AND DO OTHER THINGS WHILE TRYING TO LIVE.
BUT OH MAN, I CAN SEE WHY MOST PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO DO IT.
IT'S KIND OF GRUELING, AND WHAT YOU GET IS A MINUTE FOR EACH ONE THAT YOU'VE SIGNED UP FOR A MINUTE TO BE SUCCINCT AND SAY EVERYTHING THAT'S MOST IMPORTANT.
YEAH. SO I DON'T KNOW THAT I'LL DO THAT AGAIN DURING WRITTEN TESTIMONY.
[01:15:01]
SEEMS A LITTLE EASIER.WELL, I THINK ONCE WE HAVE OUR LEGISLATORS IN DISTRICT, IT'LL BE A LITTLE EASIER TO HAVE A REAL IN-DEPTH CONVERSATION I THINK SO TOO. THANK YOU.
ANYWAY, THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING YOU'RE DOING.
SO NEXT ON OUR AGENDA ARE OUR BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS.
[14. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS]
AND WE START WITH OUR STUDENTS.I DON'T REALLY HAVE MUCH TO SAY OTHER THAN I'M IN MR. TRAXLER'S AP CHEMISTRY CLASS AND AND HAD HIM AS MY CHEMISTRY TEACHER LAST YEAR ALSO.
AND IT SEEMS LIKE OTHER PEOPLE TO CONTINUE LEARNING ABOUT CHEMISTRY DOING SCIENCE.
SO I JUST WANT TO ADD TO EVERYONE'S PRAISE FOR HIM.
THERE ARE MANY, MANY, MANY OF THE CTE CLASSES HAVE HAVE OPPORTUNITIES TO EARN DUAL CREDIT.
AND THE ONES I'M ABOUT TO POINT OUT ARE INTER DISTRICT PROGRAMS WHERE EVEN THOUGH THEY'RE OFFERED AT ONE SCHOOL, OTHER SCHOOL, OTHER STUDENTS FROM OTHER HIGH SCHOOLS CAN ATTEND THEM. TRANSPORTATION IS PROVIDED LIKE APPLIED ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING AND HIGH SCHOOL COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN AT EDMONDS-WOODWAY, HEALTHCARE AND AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY AT MEADOWDALE, CARPENTRY AND CONSTRUCTION AT MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL.
AND THERE'S ALSO MANY OTHERS LIKE THE SNO-ISLE TECH SKILLS PROGRAM.
I ALSO WANT TO POINT OUT THE THREE OTHER SCHOOLS IN THE DISTRICT.
THERE'S EDMONDS HEIGHTS, SCRIBER LAKE, THE IB PROGRAM AT EDMONDS-WOODWAY, THE STEAM MAGNET PROGRAM AT LYNNWOOD HIGH SCHOOL, STEM MAGNET PROGRAM AT MOUNTLAKE TERRACE, AND AND THE EVERETT COMMUNITY COLLEGE OCEAN RESEARCH COLLEGE ACADEMY, JUST TO POINT OUT MANY PROGRAMS FOR ANY STUDENTS OR PARENTS WHO MAY BE INTERESTED, PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AT THOSE FOR FUTURE CONSIDERATION.
THEY CAN ALSO SPEAK WITH THEIR COLLEGE OR CAREER COUNSELOR OR ASSIGNED COUNSELOR FOR THOSE.
MAKE SURE. I ALSO HAVE TRAXLER AS A TEACHER, HE'S VERY ENGAGING.
AND I THINK HE CREATES A NICE ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL STUDENTS LEARNING CHEMISTRY.
IT IT'S DEFINITELY MADE ME BECOME WHAT'S THE WORD? IT DEFINITELY HELPED ME IN THE CLASS.
I'M DECIDING WHETHER OR NOT I WAS GOING TO ADDRESS THE PREVIOUS COMMENTS MADE, I'M GOING TO, I THINK THAT THE MOST INTERESTING COMMENT THAT I HEARD WAS THE CONCERN THAT THERE ISN'T A MONTH THAT REPRESENTS, EUROPEAN AMERICANS.
I WOULD LIKE TO BRING UP THAT, THOUGH IT IS DISAPPOINTING TO SOME.
WE HAVE THIS THING CALLED AMERICAN HISTORY, WHICH IS, PRETTY MUCH BASED ON, WHITE EUROPEANS THAT, SETTLED IN AMERICA. AND, THE CONCERN OF THE RESOURCES ON THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT WEB PAGE.
I ALSO THINK THAT THE COMPLAINT OF THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT, MAKING STUDENTS OF COLOR BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE, OPPRESSED.
IT'S ALSO INTERESTING TO COME TO THIS MEETING FROM A PLACE OF PRIVILEGE WHERE YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMPLAIN THAT, THERE ISN'T ENOUGH OF YOUR REPRESENTATION WHEN FOR SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THIS COUNTRY AND THE FOUNDING OF THIS COUNTRY.
[01:20:01]
EVERYTHING THAT IS WHITE, EVERYTHING THAT IS STRAIGHT, EVERYTHING THAT IS MALE HAS BEEN CONSIDERED TO BE RIGHT.YEAH, THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO SAY.
YEAH. I WANT TO JUST SHARE SOME GRATITUDE.
OVER THE PAST SINCE JOINING THE SCHOOL BOARD, I WAS COMING TO THE SCHOOL BOARD FROM A PLACE OF BELIEVING THAT, I WAS JOINING THE SCHOOL BOARD IN ORDER TO SEE WHAT I COULD DO TO HELP.
RIGHT THE SHIP. THAT'S THE PERSPECTIVE THAT I BROUGHT.
AND I HAVE A TREMENDOUS GRATITUDE FOR THE LEADERSHIP THAT I'VE SEEN BOTH ON THE SCHOOL BOARD AND AT THE SUPERINTENDENT LEVEL, TO BE WORKING AS HARD AS THEY CAN TO PROVIDE THE REAL SUPPORTS THAT KIDS NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL, FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT BRINGING EVERYONE FROM THE HEAD SHED, AS WE USED TO CALL IT, OVER TO MEADOWDALE ELEMENTARY WITH THEIR BALING BUCKETS TO TAKE, YOU KNOW, TO GET THE WATER OUT. SPENDING ALL DAY OVER THERE WHERE THEY HAD THEIR PLATES FULL HERE.
TO, OUR SCHOOL BOARD DIRECTOR, SPENDING ALL DAY WAITING TO BE HEARD FOR ONE MINUTE ON TWO DIFFERENT, TWO DIFFERENT BILLS.
AND GRATEFUL TOO THAT WE HAVE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES WHO ARE SO ENGAGED IN THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES, AS WELL AS INFORMING THE SCHOOL BOARD.
SO, I AM JUST FULL OF GRATITUDE FOR BEING PART OF THIS DISTRICT, OUR DISTRICT.
AND WE HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT BECAUSE THE DAYS AHEAD ARE GOING TO BE TOUGH.
AND IN THE TOUGH DAYS WE NEED TO REMEMBER TO LOOK AT EACH OTHER WITH, EMPATHY AND KINDNESS AND GRATITUDE.
THANK YOU. THAT WAS A VERY NICE STATEMENT, AND WE ARE HAPPY TO HAVE YOU ON THE BOARD TOO.
SO MY FIRST GOAL FOR TONIGHT IS TO EMBARRASS ONE PERSON HERE.
I THOUGHT YOUR NAME WAS GLEASON FOR THE LONGEST TIME, AND IT WASN'T UNTIL THE.
SO NOW I'M TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO SAY IT.
THE NEXT FOUR MONTHS, I'M SURE WILL BE FUN.
AND I TAUGHT IN GRANITE FALLS.
IT'S A WONDERFUL LITTLE COMMUNITY.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS IS AT GRADUATION.
ALSO, OVER THE LAST TWO WEEKS, I MANAGED TO VISIT SCRIBER WITH DR.
MINER. AND IT WAS REALLY GREAT TO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE BUILDING THAT THEY ARE IN.
I HAD I FINALLY GOT THE TIMELINE AS TO WHAT HAPPENED, AND THIS IS WHY I HAD BEEN SO CONFUSED ABOUT SCRIBER IS THAT PRIOR TO MY GRADUATION, IT WAS LOCATED BY SCRIBER LAKE.
AND AT SOME POINT IT HAD MOVED UP TO WHERE IT IS NOW AS A TEMPORARY BUILDING.
AND SO THAT'S WHY I WAS JUST SUPER CONFUSED AS TO WHAT WAS GOING ON.
BUT HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO IN THERE AND SEE IT, I WAS HAPPY TO TALK TO THEIR PRINCIPAL AND A COUPLE OF STUDENTS AND A FEW TEACHERS, AND WE HAVE SOME PLANS FOR MAKING SOME FIXES THERE.
SO AT LEAST WE'RE GETTING SOME OF THOSE THINGS DONE THERE.
ALSO, I THOUGHT THAT I WOULD WALK IN THERE AND THERE WOULD BE THESE HUGE ASKS, BUT SOME OF THE THINGS THAT THEY WANTED IS, A SINK FOR THEIR ART ROOM BECAUSE THEY CAN'T CURRENTLY USE IT FOR POTTERY, OR THERE'S A BROKEN CHEMICAL HOOD AND THEIR SCIENCE LAB.
YOU KNOW, THESE ARE RELATIVELY SMALL THINGS THAT I REALLY HAVE A LOT OF FAITH THAT THE DISTRICT IS GOING TO BE ABLE TO MAKE THAT STUFF WORK, AND IT'S A REAL ACCESSIBILITY THING FOR EDUCATION. SO WHILE THE LONG TERM GOAL IS OBVIOUSLY GOING TO BE GETTING THEM INTO A BUILDING THAT IS NICER THAN WHERE THEY ARE NOW, I DEFINITELY THINK THAT WE CAN MAKE A FEW MINER CHANGES AT THIS POINT AND AT LEAST GET SOME OF THAT STUFF DONE FOR THEM THAT THEY DEFINITELY DESERVE.
THE STRAIGHT WHITE MALE IN THE ROOM.
SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR WORDS.
YOU KNOW, THE ONLY THING THAT I HAVE TO SAY TO THAT IS THAT I CERTAINLY HOPE MY LIFE MATTERS.
[01:25:02]
I WOULD HOPE SO. IT MATTERS TO ME.I'VE NEVER BEEN SCARED THAT THE POLICE WOULD PULL ME OVER AND SHOOT ME.
I'VE NEVER BEEN CALLED A TERRORIST.
I'VE NEVER BEEN CALLED AN ILLEGAL.
I'VE NEVER BEEN CALLED A WETBACK.
I'VE NEVER BEEN CALLED ANY OF THE OTHER NAMES THAT SO MANY PEOPLE ARE EXPOSED TO ALL THE TIME.
I'VE JUST BY DEFAULT, NEVER BEEN PUT IN A SITUATION WHERE I FELT LESS THAN.
I JUST WALKED THROUGH THE WORLD.
SO FOR US TO BE ABLE TO REACH OUT TO OUR STUDENTS AND LET THEM KNOW THAT THESE ARE THE THINGS THAT ARE IN FRONT OF YOU, AND THESE ARE THE THINGS THAT YOU SEE AND WE ARE ACCEPTING OF YOU, AND WE ARE TRYING TO HELP YOU THROUGH THAT.
THAT'S I DON'T SEE THAT AS A WEAKNESS.
BUT THERE ARE OTHER GROUPS WHO DON'T HAVE THAT LUXURY, AND THEY MIGHT.
AND THEY THEY DO NEED THE SPECIAL MONTH SO THAT THEY CAN SEE THE THINGS, THE GREAT THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN DONE BY PEOPLE WHO LOOK LIKE THEM, SO THAT THEY KNOW THAT THEY CAN ACHIEVE IN A WAY. THE ONLY ANALOGY I HAVE TO THIS IS WHEN I GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL, NO ONE IN MY FAMILY HAD EVER GONE TO COLLEGE.
I'M THE FIRST COLLEGE GRADUATE AND I HAD NO IDEA WHAT TO DO.
BECAUSE I'D NEVER SEEN ANYBODY WHO'S LIKE ME, ANYBODY IN MY FAMILY GO.
SO BEING ABLE TO SHOW PEOPLE FROM MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES WHERE THEY CAN GO AND HOW THEY CAN ACHIEVE THAT, THAT IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT DOES OPEN DOORS FOR THEM, EVEN IF IT'S JUST SHOWING THEM THAT IT'S POSSIBLE.
THOSE WERE ALSO VERY WELL SAID STATEMENTS.
THANK YOU. I JUST SO APPRECIATE THIS BOARD.
OUR STUDENT ADVISORS AND I ALWAYS AM I ALWAYS APPRECIATE BEING ABLE TO SERVE WITH YOU BECAUSE, I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE ARE HEARING FROM THOSE THAT ARE IMPACTED BY THE DECISIONS WERE BEING MADE AND BY THIS NEW, NEW THE AND BY THE WORLD AS IT IS TODAY, NOT AS IT WAS WHEN WE WERE CHILDREN.
RIGHT. AND AS I THINK ABOUT MY LIFETIME OF PRACTICE, SOME OF THE QUOTES OF THOSE THAT I RESEARCHED, ONE JUST ALWAYS COMES TO MIND THAT WE HAVE THE TREMENDOUS RESPONSIBILITY TO WORK TOWARDS A FUTURE MARKED BY EMPATHY, LOVE AND INCLUSION, BY COMMITTING TO LIVING AND TEACHING ANTI-RACISM EVERY SINGLE DAY.
AND THIS SENTIMENT IS ONE THAT COMES FORTH FROM THOSE THAT ARE THINKING ABOUT LIFETIMES OF PRACTICE.
AS WE THINK ABOUT BLACK HISTORY MONTH, AND I WOULD ENCOURAGE FOLKS TO REFLECT ON HOW THEY CAN SHOW UP AND ENGAGE IN THIS LIFETIME OF PRACTICE. THANK YOU SO MUCH, DIRECTOR KILGORE.
IN PARTICULAR OUR STUDENTS, FOR, INFORMING, THE WIAA AMENDMENT PROCESS.
IT'S IT'S REALLY, AS DIRECTOR KATIMS POINTED OUT, IT'S NOT NECESSARILY IN OUR WHEELHOUSE.
SO I APPRECIATE YOUR WILLINGNESS TO LEARN WITH ME AND, PROVIDE FEEDBACK FROM OUR DISTRICT.
SOME OF THE DISCUSSION TONIGHT REMINDED ME OF BACK IN THE LATE 90S.
I WAS AN EDUCATOR, SO I'VE BEEN AROUND FOR A WHILE, AND, I WANTED TO DO, I WAS I HAD A VERY DIVERSE AUDIENCE OR A DIVERSE CLASS.
ADULTS, ADULT LEARNERS, VERY DIVERSE.
AND WE WERE LOOKING AT WE WANTED TO DO SOMETHING AROUND CHILDREN'S BOOKS.
AND I COULD NOT FIND IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND A NUMBER OF CHILDREN'S BOOKS.
SO, I MEAN, THAT WAS A WHILE AGO, BUT IT WAS, SAY, 2020.
BUT YEAH, IT WAS 25 YEARS AGO.
I COULD NOT FIND A GOOD NUMBER OF CHILDREN'S BOOKS THAT REFLECTED MY CLASS IN TERMS OF COLOR AND LIFE EXPERIENCE.
AND TODAY I THINK THAT WE HAVE, YOU KNOW, WITH THE INTENTIONAL WORK THAT EDUCATORS HAVE DONE OVER THE YEARS, WE HAVE A MUCH BETTER CHANCE OF FINDING BOOKS THAT THAT REFLECT OUR STUDENTS.
[01:30:08]
WERE REFLECTIVE OF OUR, OUR STUDENTS EXPERIENCES.AND I THINK WE STILL NEED THE MONTHS, BECAUSE I THINK WE STILL NEED TO BE INTENTIONAL ABOUT IT TO MAKE SURE THAT, ALL OUR, ALL OUR STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO SEE THEMSELVES IN, IN THE CURRICULUM AND IN THE BOOKS THAT, THAT THEY READ.
OTHER THAN THAT, DIRECTOR KATIMS AND I AND DR.
SO DITTO TO WHAT EVERYBODY HAS SAID.
SO I DON'T HAVE TO REPEAT PEOPLE.
BUT I WILL SAY PART OF MY GRATITUDE FOR WORKING WITH THE BOARD AND AND THE STAFF REALLY CAME THROUGH LOUD AND CLEAR LAST THURSDAY WHEN WE HAD OUR RETREAT.
SO WE HAD A THREE HOUR EVENING RETREAT.
WE DID IT ALSO AS A WAY TO BRING OURSELVES TOGETHER AS THE NEW BOARD, WHO WE ARE, AND THAT EVERY TIME WE HAVE A NEW BOARD MEMBER, WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE COMMON UNDERSTANDINGS OF OUR ROLES AND THAT WE CAN AGREE TO DISAGREE.
BUT HOW WE GO ABOUT DOING OUR DISCUSSIONS AND OUR DECISION MAKING.
AND IT WAS, I THOUGHT, AN EXTREMELY VALUABLE DISCUSSION THAT WE HAD AND REALLY APPRECIATED EVERYBODY'S OPENNESS AND WILLINGNESS TO SHARE AND COLLABORATE AND SORT OF CONGEAL TOGETHER AS A NEW GROUP.
MINERS GOALS FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR, WHICH IS ALWAYS GOOD FOR US TO REMEMBER WHERE OUR LASER FOCUS NEEDS TO BE IN TERMS OF STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENT AND STUDENT SUCCESS.
ONE OTHER PIECE THAT I WANT TO DO IS I WANT TO THANK SOME PARENTS WHO HAVE BEEN STRONG ADVOCATES, REALLY AMAZING TO RISE UP AND NOT ONLY ADVOCATE DIRECTLY WITH LEGISLATORS, BUT TO SEND OUT MESSAGES TO HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF PARENTS IN THE DISTRICT ABOUT THE LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES.
ONE OF THESE IS JENNIFER CASTLE WORKING WITH CAROLYN HARVEY, WHO ARE BOTH, MUSIC BOOSTER PRESIDENTS, ONE FOR EDMONDS-WOODWAY, ONE FOR MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL, AND SO APPRECIATIVE OF ALL OF THEIR WORKING TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS WE'RE TRYING TO DO AND HOW PARENTS CAN STEP UP AND DO IT AND EXPLAIN IT TO LARGE NUMBERS OF PARENTS WHO HAVE ALSO BEEN DOING THIS.
THE OTHER PERSON I WANT TO THANK IS VINITA FRANCISCO, WHO IS THE HEAD OF THE PTA COUNCIL FOR THE DISTRICT, WHO HAS ALSO BEEN WORKING TIRELESSLY TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL THE PTAS ACROSS THE DISTRICT KNOW HOW THEY CAN GO AHEAD AND CONTACT THEIR LEGISLATORS AND ADVOCATE FOR MORE FUNDING AND FOR WHAT WE NEED IN THE DISTRICT.
SO, I MEAN, IT'S JUST IT TAKES A VILLAGE.
THAT'S ALL I CAN SAY IS IT TAKES A VILLAGE.
AND SEEING ALL THE PARENT GROUPS RISE UP AND WORK TOGETHER AND HELP US IN THE WORK THAT WE'RE ALL TRYING TO DO IS JUST VERY GRATIFYING.
SO THANK YOU TO ALL OF THOSE PEOPLE.
MINER [APPLAUSE]. I DON'T KNOW THAT I HAVE ANYTHING TO ADD TONIGHT.
I APPRECIATE EVERYONE'S EFFORTS AND WORK.
IT'S A LITTLE. IT'S A TIGHT TURNAROUND WHEN WE HAVE A THURSDAY RETREAT AND A TUESDAY MEETING.
SO I APPRECIATE EVERYONE'S PREPARATION AND ATTENTION TO OUR WORK TONIGHT.
[15. ITEMS FOR FUTURE CONSIDERATION OR INFORMATION]

AND THIS REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING OF THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF DIRECTORS IS
ADJOURNED.
