NEXT, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A CELEBRATION AND I'LL TURN IT OVER TO DR. MINER.
[8. CELEBRATION- 6:35 pm]
>> THANK YOU SO MUCH. WE HAVE ONE CELEBRATION THIS EVENING.
HAVE A PRESENTATION BY OUR ROBOTICS TEAMS. CHILL OUT ROBOTICS AND ROYAL ROBOTICS REPRESENT THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT WERE COMPETING IN FIRST ROBOTICS COMPETITIONS BASED AT MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL FOR CHILL OUT AND LYNNWOOD HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE ROYALS.
THE TEAMS ARE OPEN TO STUDENTS FROM ANY OF THE ESD HIGH SCHOOLS.
SO THE MEMBERS OF THE ROBOTICS TEAMS WILL NOW COME FORWARD TO PRESENT TO THE BOARD ABOUT THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS DURING THE 2022/2023 SCHOOL YEAR.
>> WELCOME TO THE FIRST SLIDE.
>> THIS IS OUR TEAMS AFTER OUR SECOND COMPETITION, WHICH WE WON TOGETHER.
THAT HAS NEVER HAPPENED IN THE HISTORY OF ROBOTICS TEAMS. AS YOU CAN SEE WE'RE VERY EXCITED.
I AM APOLLO GRAVES FROM MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL.
I'M THE TREASURER OF CHILL OUT.
>> I'M SIMON BRANCH, THE PROGRAMMING LEAD.
>> I'M KEVIN SENG, I'M THE VICE PRESIDENT OF ADMINISTRATION.
>> HI. I'M NORA COOK. I AM PRESENT.
>> SO WHAT IS FRC? EVERY YEAR, FIRST, THE COMPANY THAT HOSTS OUR COMPETITIONS RELEASES A NEW GAME WHICH OUR TEAMS PARTICIPATE IN.
WE HAVE SIX WEEKS TO DESIGN, BUILD, PROTOTYPE OUR ROBOT SO IT'S COMPETITION READY.
IT IS WORLDWIDE. THERE ARE OVER 25 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES PARTICIPATING, AND ONE OF THE CORE PRINCIPLES OF FIRST IS GRACIOUS PROFESSIONALISM.
[00:05:03]
>> SOMETHING THAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO OUR TEAMS SPECIFICALLY AS WELL AS FIRST IN GENERAL IS DIVERSITY.
WE REALLY TRY TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE FEELS REPRESENTED AND WELCOMED IN ROBOTICS AND STEM IN GENERAL.
IN THE PAST YEAR, CHILL OUT ALONE WAS ABLE TO TRIPLE THEIR FEMALE MEMBERS, AS WELL AS BOTH TEAMS BEING COMPLETELY FREE FOR ALL.
ANYONE CAN JOIN REGARDLESS OF FINANCIAL STATUS, AND WE ARE OPEN TO ALL ADMIN SCHOOL DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE DISTRICT THAT I ALREADY SAID.
>> FRC IS COMPLETELY STUDENT-LED ORGANIZATION IN GENERAL, AND FOR US TWO TEAMS WE DESIGN OUR ENTIRE ROBOT, MANUFACTURER THE ENTIRE ROBOT, PROGRAM IT.
WE DO ALL OUR GRAPHIC DESIGN AND MERCHANDISE IN-HOUSE AND MAKING JACKETS AND JERSEYS AND HOODIES AND ALL THAT KIND OF STUFF.
WE PLAN PUBLIC EVENTS FOR OUTREACH AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS, AND COMMUNITY EVENTS TO GET PEOPLE INVOLVED IN OUR TEAM.
IT'S MENTOR-SUPPORTED, NOT RUN BY MENTORS.
STUDENTS DO ALL THE WORK AND MENTORS ARE THERE TO SUPPORT THEM, AND IT'S COMPLETELY FUNDED BY THE COMMUNITY.
WE RAISE GRANTS EVERY YEAR TO FUND ALL THE MANUFACTURING AND ALL THE STUFF THAT WE DO.
WE FACED A LOT OF CHALLENGES LAST YEAR.
ONE OF THEM WAS AFTER COVID, WE'VE HAD SOME TROUBLES WITH REALLY IMPORTANT PEOPLE BEFORE COVID GRADUATING OBVIOUSLY.
SAME THING WITH THE YEAR BEFORE, WE HAD SOME IMPORTANT PEOPLE GRADUATE.
WE'RE REALLY WORKING ON KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER LAST YEAR AND MAKING SURE THAT THE TEAMS ARE SUSTAINABLE.
ANOTHER THING WAS THE INTERNET OUTAGE, WHICH LASTED ABOUT TWO WEEKS AT THE BEGINNING OF FEBRUARY.
DURING THAT PERIOD, WE DID ALL OF OUR WORK ON PAPER AND FOR PROGRAMMING USING HOSPITALS AND STUFF LIKE THAT.
JUST A LOT OF OTHER CURVEBALLS BASED ON DESIGN AND STUFF LIKE THAT.
>> ONE OF OUR STAPLE THINGS THAT WE DO FOR THE COMMUNITY AS A JOINT EFFORT IS THAT WE HOST THE PRACTICE FIELD BECAUSE WE'RE THE ONLY TEAM IN THE NORTH END OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST AND THE PUGET SOUND REGION WHO HOSTS THE PRACTICE FIELD.
ALL THE TEAM ALL THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST TEAMS THAT HAVE QUALIFIED TO GO ATTEND TO THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN HOUSTON, NEARLY ALL OF THEM HAD ATTENDED OUR PRACTICE FIELD AT THE AUXILIARY GYM OF FORMER ALDERWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL.
UNFORTUNATELY, THAT IS CURRENTLY UNDER A ROOF CONSTRUCTION ROOF BOARD RIGHT NOW.
UNFORTUNATELY, WE CAN'T HOST IT FOR PREPARATION FOR OUR OFF-SEASON EVENTS ON OCTOBER.
THOUGH, WE DO HOPE THAT IT WILL BE AVAILABLE IN JANUARY AND FOR THE YEARS BEYOND SO WE CAN CONTINUE TO HOST THE PRACTICE FIELD, AND WE THANK THE DISTRICT FOR ALLOWING US TO DO THIS.
>> WE ALSO HAVE SOME WEBSITES WHICH YOU CAN'T CLICK ON UNFORTUNATELY, BUT WE RUN OUR OWN WEBSITES AND HAVE OUR OWN SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS AND YOUTUBE CHANNELS, AND SO FORTH. ALL RIGHT?
>> CAN YOU COME UP HERE AND SPEAK?
>> BUT I DON'T WANT TO HOLD IT.
>> HELLO, EVERYONE. MY NAME IS NORA COOK.
I'M A JUNIOR AT EDMONDS WOODWAY HIGH SCHOOL.
I FOUND OUT ABOUT THE ROYAL ROBOTICS TEAM IN 2021 WHEN THEY DID A PRESENTATION IN THE DEAF AND HEARD OF HEARING CLASSROOMS AT MY SCHOOL.
I HAVE ALWAYS HAD AN INTEREST IN MECHANICS, IN COMPUTERS.
THAT TO ME MEANT THAT ROBOTICS WAS JUST A NATURAL EXTENSION OF IT.
ONE OF MY FIRST CHALLENGES WAS LEARNING HOW TO USE A CNC MACHINE.
IT TOOK SOME TIME TO LEARN THE PROCESS BECAUSE THE PROCESS CAN SOMETIMES GET MESSY.
BUT WITH THE HELP OF OUR FABULOUS MENTORS AND MY FELLOW TEAM MEMBERS, I WAS ABLE TO GAIN CONFIDENCE AND MASTER THOSE SKILLS.
I WAS ABLE TO DO ALL OF THAT UNDER SAFE CONDITIONS WITH TONS OF ENCOURAGEMENT.
[00:10:03]
ROBOTICS INSPIRES ME TO LEARN NEW THINGS, TO MEET NEW PEOPLE, AND TO HAVE FUN WITH THE MANY MEMBERS OF OUR TEAM.I WAS SURPRISED AND HONORED TO BE ELECTED AS PRESIDENT BY MY FELLOW TEAM MEMBERS FOR THIS YEAR, AND I AM VERY EXCITED TO SERVE.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND HAVE A WONDERFUL NIGHT.
>> JUST ONE MORE THING. THE CHILL-OUT TEAM HAS ASKED ME TO HAND TO THE DIRECTORS AND DOCTOR MINER AND ERIN, THEIR PINS ON BEHALF OF CHILL OUT 1778.
NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH THE YEAR THE US DECLARED INDEPENDENCE, 1776.
>> THAT IS ALL WE HAVE FOR TONIGHT. THANK YOU.
>> FIRST OF ALL, ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FROM ANY OF THE STUDENTS? ONCE YOU'RE SWORN IN, WE'LL LET YOU GO STUDENT ADVISORS NOW, OR THE BOARD MEMBERS.
I WONDER HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE ON EACH OF THE TEAMS APPROXIMATELY?
>> OUR TEAM HAS ABOUT 30, WE'RE DEFINITELY ONE OF THE SMALLER TEAMS GLOBALLY. I'M NOT SURE HOW MANY.
>> ROYAL ROBOTICS HAS ABOUT 15-25.
>> I AM JUST SO THRILLED AT HOW YOU'VE DEMONSTRATED THE RESILIENCY FOR THE CHALLENGES WITH INTERNET AND COVID AND PRACTICE SPACES AND THAT YOU'RE ALL EXCITED AND IT SHOWS AND ENGAGED IN THIS AND I WILL SAY, I AM A CHILL-OUT PARENT ALUMNI.
BUT WE LOVE LIBERTY OF COURSE.
[LAUGHTER] I'M JUST SO THRILLED TO GET THIS PRESENTATION EARLY IN THE YEAR AND LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING MORE ABOUT WHAT YOU GUYS ARE DOING. THANKS.
>> I'M JUST CURIOUS. WHAT'S YOUR BUDGET? HOW MUCH DOES IT ACTUALLY COST TO BUILD A ROBOT OVER THE SIX WEEKS, AND WHERE DO YOU GET THE BASIC FRAME FROM? DOES FIRST, PROVIDE THE BASIC FRAME OF A ROBOT, OR DO YOU HAVE TO PURCHASE THAT AT THE VERY BEGINNING?
>> OUR GENERAL BUDGET FOR A SEASON IS ABOUT $40,000, WHICH IS ALL FUND-RAISED BY OUR TEAM AND THE FRAME I BELIEVE WE BUILD IT.
>> THERE'S NO PRE-BUILT REFRAME.
YOU'RE NOT REQUIRED TO USE ONE.
YOU CAN, BUT WE BUILD OUR OWN FRAMES FOR A ROBOT, SO EVERYTHING IS BUILT IN OUR SHOP.
>> THE ONLY THING WE GOT FROM FIRST IS TWO SMALL GAME OBJECTS THAT WE USE FOR TESTING THAT ARE NOT PART OF A ROBOT AT ALL.
>> CAN I SPEAK, BRAD? I'M UP HERE.
ON THE PART OF ROYAL ROBOTICS, BECAUSE WE HAVE MENTORS FROM MICROSOFT AND FOR EACH HOUR THEY VOLUNTEER, OUR TEAM GETS PAID 25 DOLLARS AN HOUR.
WE HAVE IN TOTAL FOR INCOME 65,000 AND OUR EXPENSES AND ESPECIALLY BECAUSE WE WENT TO HAWAII ARE 80,000.
>> IF YOU GUYS DO WANT TO SEE WHAT ROYAL ROBOTS LOOKS LIKE OURS IS OVER THERE WINWOOD WAS UNABLE TO BRING THEIRS, BUT IT'S PRETTY COOL.
>> ARE YOU ABLE NOW TO MAKE TWO VERSIONS, ONE THAT YOU CAN PRACTICE ON AND THEN THE ONE THAT YOU TAKE WITH YOU. HOW DOES THAT WORK? BECAUSE I KNOW IN THE PAST THERE HAVE BEEN SCHOOLS WHO HAVE HAD THE CAPABILITY TO HAVE TWO, BUT NOT ALL THE SCHOOLS HAVE AND I HEARD THAT IT'S BECOME MORE CONSISTENT.
I'M CURIOUS WHAT THE SITUATION IS.
>> IT JUST DEPENDS ON THE TEAM'S BUDGET AND HOW MANY MEMBERS THEY HAVE.
OUR TEAM ISN'T REALLY LARGE ENOUGH TO DO THAT, AND WE DON'T HAVE THE FUNDING EITHER.
BUT SOME OF THE HIGHER-LEVEL TEAMS WITH A LOT OF MEMBERS, THEY DO MAKE TWO ROBOTS, ONE PRACTICE ON.
>> I'M SORRY I CAN'T HOLD BACK
>> TELL ME WHAT YOU SAY, AND I'LL SAY IT FOR YOU.
[00:15:03]
>> ACTUALLY, IF YOU CAN COME TO THE MIC BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE ON LIVE STREAM CAN'T HEAR COMMENTS FROM THE AUDIENCE.
IF YOU COULD PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
>> AND INTRODUCE YOURSELF. THANK YOU.
>> BRAD NELSON, COACH OF ROYAL ROBOTICS 2522, LYNNWOOD HIGH.
I STARTED THE TEAM 2008 AND THEY CAN'T REALLY GET RID OF ME.
I RETIRED A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, BUT I JUST DON'T GO AWAY.
ANYWAY. WE STARTED BUILDING TWO ROBOTS SOME TIME AGO.
IT WAS A FUNCTION OF OUR SIZE AND THE MONEY THAT WE HAD THAT OTHER PEOPLE DID NOT.
WE STOPPED DOING THAT TWO YEARS AGO BECAUSE, FIRST, IT STOPPED THE WAY THAT THEY WERE DOING BUSINESS.
THEY CHANGED THE WAY THAT THEY WERE DOING BUSINESS.
WE NOW JUST BUILD ONE ROBOT BECAUSE PREVIOUSLY WE WERE UNABLE TO ACTUALLY MAKE CHANGES BETWEEN, SO WE HAD TO HAVE ONE THAT WE WORKED ON AND ONE THAT WE PRACTICED WITH.
NOW WE CAN JUST HAVE ONE ROBOT. THAT'S WHAT WE DO.
IT'S MUCH MORE COST-EFFECTIVE, MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE WITH THE TIMES TEAM.
WE NO LONGER DO THAT, BUT IT'S NOT BECAUSE WE CAN'T, IT'S BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT TO.
>> THANK YOU FOR CLARIFYING. WE APPRECIATE THAT.
I WANT TO THANK ALL OF YOU AND EVERYBODY WHO'S INVOLVED WITH THE FIRST ROBOTICS.
I'VE HAD AN EXPERIENCE WITH A LOT OF THE STUDENTS ACTUALLY IN ANOTHER DISTRICT BECAUSE MY HUSBAND TAUGHT IN A SCHOOL THAT HAD A GREAT DEAL OF INVOLVEMENT WITH FIRST ROBOTICS.
I THINK IT'S AMAZING NOT ONLY FOR THE ACADEMIC LEARNING, THEIR WORKING ON STEM, BUT THE PRINCIPLES OF FIRST ARE THE PRINCIPLES THAT WE SHOULD HAVE THROUGHOUT OUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM.
THE BELIEF THAT EVERYBODY MATTERS, THAT EVERYBODY PLAYS A ROLE, THE DIVERSITY, THE RESPECT.
WHAT I'VE SEEN WHEN I'VE WATCHED SOME OF THE COMPETITIONS IS WHEN A TEAM GETS IN TROUBLE AND ANOTHER TEAM COMES AND HELPS THEM, EVEN IF THEY'RE NOT PARTNER TEAMS AT THE TIME.
THAT'S THE FEELINGS WE ALL NEED TO HAVE IN TERMS OF HOW WE DO THINGS IN THE WORLD.
I THINK FIRST IS A WONDERFUL MODEL OF THAT APPROACH.
I WANT TO THANK EVERYBODY, OUR MENTORS, OUR STUDENTS, OUR TEACHERS, EVERYBODY WHO'S INVOLVED WITH ALL OF THE STUDENTS WHO DO FIRST ROBOTICS.
I JUST WANTED TO GIVE A LITTLE PITCH FOR THEM .
>> [OVERLAPPING] CAN I FOLLOW UP COUPLE MORE QUESTIONS? HOW MANY KIDS OR STUDENTS ARE COMING FROM THE OTHER SCHOOLS, EDMONDS-WOODWAY AND SCRIBER?
>> FOR CHILL OUT, WE CAN SAY ABOUT 10 OR MAYBE EIGHT OUT OF 30, SO IT IS MOSTLY [INAUDIBLE].
>> I'M FROM EDMONDS-WOODWAY, FOR ONE.
>> ON PART OF ALL ROBOTICS, ABOUT 40% OF OUR TEAM MEMBERSHIP IS FROM EDMONDS-WOODWAY AND WE ACTUALLY HAVE ONE FROM NORTH BEND.
>> OH, WOW. ENTIRELY OUT OF DISTRICT THEN.
I ALSO HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT, IS THIS SCALABLE? WHAT IF YOU HAD 60 KIDS SHOW UP? WOULD THERE BE SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY TO DO?
>> WELL, IT DOES SCALE UP TO A POINT.
SOME LARGER TEAMS LIKE JACKSON ACTUALLY VET THEIR MEMBERS AND SO NOT EVERYBODY WHO WANTS TO JOIN CAN JOIN, WHICH I THINK HAVING SMALLER TEAMS IS JUST BETTER BECAUSE ANYBODY CAN JOIN WHO WANTS TO PARTICIPATE.
YOU CAN MAKE A BETTER ROBOT IF YOU HAVE MORE PEOPLE.
BUT PART OF THAT IS ALSO, YOU MIGHT JUST LAND WITH BETTER SKILL OF THE PEOPLE WHO WERE THERE.
>> THERE ARE THINGS FOR PEOPLE TO DO THOUGH THAT'S DEFINITELY SOMETHING WE WORKED ON THIS YEAR, WHERE EVEN IF THEY'RE NOT NECESSARILY WORKING ON THE ROBOT FOR THAT YEAR, THERE ARE THINGS THEY CAN DO.
THEY CAN LEARN CAD SKILLS, THEY CAN LEARN PROGRAMMING OUTSIDE OF JUST THE SPECIFIC ROBOT WE'RE BUILDING FOR THAT GAME THAT YEAR.
>> OBVIOUSLY THERE'S A HUGE AMOUNT OF OTHER STUFF THAT WE DO.
I MYSELF, MOSTLY DO FUNDRAISING AND STUFF AND NOT REALLY THE ACTUAL BUILDING OF ROBOTS, BUT KIDS CAN HELP WITH FUNDRAISERS, OUTREACH EVENTS, SOCIAL MEDIA, AND PLENTY OF OTHER THINGS OUTSIDE OF THE ROBOT.
>> SOME OF THE TEAMS IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST HAVE UP TO 100 MEMBERS.
>> EXCELLENT. THANK YOU FOR ALL OF
[00:20:02]
THAT INFORMATION AND FOR EVERYTHING THAT ALL OF YOU DO.WE APPRECIATE YOUR COMING AND SHARING IT WITH US.
>> DR. KATIMS, THE ONE THING I FORGOT TO MENTION WHILE I WAS UP THERE, ON THE PART OF ROYAL ROBOTICS, WE ARE ACTUALLY STARTING OUR FIRST LEGO LEAGUE TEAM AT OAK HEIGHTS.
>> THE STUDENTS AND SOME OF THE MENTORS, WE WILL BE MENTORING THE FIFTH AND SIXTH GRADERS ON A LEGO ROBOT AND THEN HOPEFULLY, WE'LL GO TO STATES IN JANUARY.
>> THAT'S GREAT. LET'S GET THEM IN AS YOUNG AS POSSIBLE.
[9. SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS- 6:50 pm]
WE HAVE A SCHOOL PRESENTATION.I'LL TURN IT OVER TO DR. MINER.
>> WELL, IT IS MY PLEASURE TO WELCOME FORWARD, AT LONG LAST, AS YOU MAY RECALL, THIS WAS A PRESENTATION THAT WAS DELAYED FROM THE SPRING, OUR STUDENTS FROM TERRACE PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, TO SHARE SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THEIR SCHOOL WITH US TONIGHT.
PLEASE WELCOME FORWARD OUR STUDENTS.
>> THEY'RE GOING TO PRESENT IN JUST A SECOND.
I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT WE'RE SO PROUD TO BE HERE TONIGHT.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING US HERE FINALLY.
I BROUGHT WITH ME TWO AMAZING STUDENTS.
I'M GOING TO LET THEM TAKE IT AWAY.
THIS IS MATEO AND THIS IS YUME.
>> COME NEAR THE MICROPHONE, SO EVERYBODY CAN HEAR YOU.
>> HI. MY NAME IS YUME ALOKOA.
TODAY WE'RE GOING TO BE PRESENTING YOU THIS COOL SENSE OF BELONGING AND HOW THE SCHOOL GETS TOGETHER.
>> BUT BEFORE WE GET STARTED, I'D LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT SOME STUDENTS THAT ATTEND TERRACE PARK WORKED VERY HARD TO MAKE YOU GUYS A VIDEO.
BUT WHEN WE WERE MAKING A VIDEO, THE SOUND WASN'T WORKING VERY WELL, SO I'D JUST LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THEY WORKED VERY HARD.
>> HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLE FOR THE SCHOOL SENSE OF BELONGING.
A BUDDY SYSTEM IS WHERE A YOUNGER STUDENT GETS PAIRED UP WITH AN OLDER STUDENT.
A BUDDY SYSTEM HELPS TO PROMOTE FRIENDSHIP, BETTER SUPPORT OF COURSEWORK, BEHAVIORAL, AND SOCIAL NEEDS.
ALSO, IT CAN FOSTER A GREATER SENSE OF BELONGING AND MORE INCLUSIVE SCHOOL COMMUNITY.
THEY DO THIS TO PROVIDE SUPPORT THROUGH FRIENDSHIP AND EDUCATION.
>> ANOTHER THING THAT HELPS BUILD COMMUNITY IN OUR SCHOOL IS THAT THERE'S ALWAYS AT LEAST HALF A DOZEN ADULTS OUTSIDE GREETING THE STUDENTS IN THE MORNING AND HOW THAT MAKES THE STUDENTS FEEL IS LIKE THEY'RE PART OF THE SCHOOL, LIKE THEY'RE PART OF A WOLF PACK.
>> SPEAKING OF SENSE OF BELONGING, THE WHOLE ENTIRE SCHOOL READ THIS BOOK CALLED MAGIC RAMEN, WHICH BROUGHT THE WHOLE ENTIRE SCHOOL TOGETHER.
THE BOOK CALLED MAGIC RAMEN WAS WRITTEN BY ANDREA WANG, ILLUSTRATED BY KANA.
I'M SORRY, I CAN'T PRONOUNCE THEIR LAST NAME.
THE BOOK MAGIC RAMEN IS ABOUT A MAN NAMED MOMOFUKU ANDO.
FOLLOWING WORLD WAR II, MOMOFUKU ANDO STRUGGLES TO PERFECT HIS RECIPE FOR A NOODLE SOUP THAT IS DELICIOUS, INEXPENSIVE, AND A QUICK WAY TO FEED THE HUNGRY.
IN READING THE BOOK, IT HELPS TO BUILD MORE CONVERSATIONS AND MORE UNDERSTANDING THAT THERE'S A LOT OF PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO REALLY NEEDS HELP, NO MATTER WHETHER IT'S YOUR FAMILY OR NOT, YOU STILL HAVE TO HELP THEM.
ALSO, SOME CLASSES MADE TOP RAMEN AND ATE IT TOGETHER.
>> FINALLY, WE'D LIKE TO TEACH YOU A CHANT THAT WE DO AT OUR SCHOOLS FOR ASSEMBLIES AND THAT HELPS BUILD COMMUNITY BECAUSE WE'RE ALL SAYING THE SAME THING AT THE SAME TIME, LIKE ONE BIG SCHOOL.
FIRST, ME AND YUME WILL DEMONSTRATE AND THEN WE'D LIKE TO DO IT WITH YOU GUYS.
>> LET ME SEE THE WAY YOU ROLL.
>> ARE YOU GUYS READY? [LAUGHTER] [BACKGROUND]
>> LET ME SEE THE WAY YOU ROLL.
>> H-O-W-L, H-O-W-L. [LAUGHTER] [APPLAUSE]
[00:25:07]
>> NOW WE HAVE A GIFT FOR YOU.
DO YOU GUYS HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR US?
>> WELL, I'M JUST GOING TO JUMP IN.
WHEN DO YOU GET YOUR FIRST BUDDY?
>> ARE YOU IN KINDERGARTEN WHEN YOU GET YOUR FIRST BIG BUDDY?
>> WHAT DID YOU THINK OF YOUR BUDDY WHEN YOU FIRST MET THEM? WHAT GRADE WERE THEY IN? DO YOU KNOW?
>> MINE WAS SECOND GRADE AND THEY WERE REALLY NICE AND I LIKED THEM.
>> DID THEY MAKE YOU FEEL WELCOME?
>> I REALLY LIKED THAT YOU ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THE VIDEO PRESENTATION WASN'T ABLE TO DO IT.
BUT IF YOU'VE GOT SOMETHING WITHOUT SOUND AND YOU WANT TO SHARE IT WITH US ANYWAYS, JUST LET YOUR TEAM KNOW THAT WE'D BE VERY HAPPY TO SEE IT.
>> I CAN SEND THAT OUT AS A PART OF THE FRIDAY MEMO.
>> FOLLOWING UP ON THE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE BUDDY PROGRAM, WHICH I THINK WE ALL REALLY LOVE TO HEAR THE SOUND OF, DO YOU KEEP THE SAME BUDDY YEAR AFTER YEAR OR CHANGE IT EACH YEAR OR WHEN THE OLDER STUDENT GRADUATES? HOW DOES IT WORK IN TERMS OF THE LENGTH OF THE RELATIONSHIP?
>> I THINK WE SWITCH BUDDIES EACH YEAR WE GO TO SCHOOL.
>> ARE THEY RANDOMLY ASSIGNED?
>> OKAY. [LAUGHTER] WHAT'S THE FAVORITE THING FOR EACH OF YOU THAT YOU'VE DONE WITH YOUR BUDDY?
>> WE DID THIS REALLY FUN THING ONE TIME WHEN WE WENT OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL AND WE DIDN'T HAVE TRASH BAGS AND GLOVES.
WE PICKED UP TRASH AROUND THE SCHOOL, THAT WAS FUN.
>> BOTH OF YOU AGREE WITH THAT?
>> WELL, ENVIRONMENTALLY SPEAKING, WE THINK YOU'RE GREAT, [LAUGHTER] THAT YOU THINK THAT'S FUN. THAT'S SUPER.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS FROM ANY OF THE OTHER STUDENTS? THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR COMING.
WE REALLY APPRECIATE IT AND WE WILL LOOK AT THE VIDEO AS WELL.
>> NOW WE'LL HEAR FROM PRINCIPAL RACHEL TORAZZI TO TALK ABOUT THE SIP PRESENTATION FOR OUR SCHOOL AT TERRACE PARK.
I WISH THEY WERE STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO ME.
THEY'RE LIKE MY SECURITY BLANKET.
THANK YOU FOR LETTING US COME OUT.
AGAIN, I'M DR. RACHEL TORAZZI AND I AM THE LEARNER LEADER FOR OUR TERRACE PARK ELEMENTARY.
WE ARE THE LARGEST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN OUR DISTRICT.
WE'RE ONE SCHOOL, BUT WE HAVE TWO PROGRAMS. THE STUDENTS AND FAMILIES WHO LIVE IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD, OF COURSE, COME TO OUR SCHOOL.
BUT WE ALSO HOST THE FAMILIES OR THE STUDENTS BOTH, WHO QUALIFY FOR THE HIGHLY CAPABLE PROGRAM.
TONIGHT I'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU OUR SENSE OF BELONGING GOAL.
I FEEL LIKE I'M FAR AWAY FROM THIS MIC, BUT, THANK YOU. I'M LEANING.
OUR GOAL IS TO INCREASE STUDENTS SENSE OF BELONGING BY 10%.
HOWEVER, I HAVE FULL CONFIDENCE IN MY STUDENTS AND STAFF THAT THIS CAN BE DONE.
I DON'T WANT TO LOWER THE BAR IN ORDER TO BE AFRAID OF NOT OBTAINING OUR GOAL, SO WE'RE GOING TO INCREASE IT BY 10%.
WE USE TWO DATA POINTS OR TWO DIFFERENT PIECES OF DATA.
THAT IS WRITTEN FOR OR GIVEN TO THIRD THROUGH SIXTH GRADERS.
ALSO MY TEACHERS CREATE A SURVEY WHICH I'LL SHOW IN A MINUTE.
THOSE ARE MY K1 AND 2 TEACHERS.
WE DO THIS BECAUSE WE BELIEVE IN OUR KIDS, WE BELIEVE IN STUDENTS, WE BELIEVE IN KNOWING THEIR STORY, STRENGTH, AND THEIR NEED.
FROM THE OFFICE STAFF, FROM THE CUSTODIAL, OUR EDUCATORS, EACH OF US KNOWING ALL OF OUR STUDENTS.
[00:30:02]
HOWEVER, IT'S OUR JOB TO KNOW ALL OF THEM.THAT IS ANOTHER READING STUDENTS.
HEY, HOW WAS LAST NIGHT? TYING THAT IN BECAUSE THERE'S SO MANY OF THEM.
AT TERRACE PARK, WE BELIEVE, AGAIN, IT'S THE CONNECTION.
CONNECTION IS THE KEY FOR STUDENTS, FOR THEIR HEALTH AND THEIR WELL-BEING ALONG WITH THEIR ACADEMIC SUCCESS.
STRATEGIES WAS TO CREATE A SCREENER.
I'M LOOKING OVER HERE AND HERE.
STRATEGIES, THE PANORAMA WE WENT INTO IS ONLY THIRD THROUGH SIXTH GRADE, BUT WE DEFINITELY NEEDED TO KNOW HOW TO OUR VENDORS AND OUR FIRST OR SECOND GRADERS FEEL AT SCHOOL.
WE SHARE THE DATA WITH FAMILIES, WHICH WE DEFINITELY WOULD LIKE TO DO MORE OF THAT.
AS A SCHOOL, SEPTEMBER, WE'VE WORKED REALLY HARD SO FAR TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR TIER 1, THE THINGS THAT ALL OF US ARE DOING IN ALL OF OUR CLASSROOMS. WE DID SOME WORK AROUND THIS AND WE'RE STILL WORKING ON THIS CURRENTLY.
HERE'S AN EXAMPLE OF FOR THE QUESTIONS THAT MY FIRST GRADE TEAM CAME UP WITH.
AGAIN, THESE ARE MY NEIGHBORHOOD TEACHERS AND MY CHALLENGE TEACHERS.
IT WAS CONNECTED TO THE PANORAMA DATA OR PANORAMAS SURVEY QUESTIONS.
WE HAVE FALL, WINTER, AND SPRING, AND RIGHT OFF THE BAT, YOU CAN SEE WE HAVE WORK TO DO.
THIS IS WHY DATA IS SO IMPORTANT.
IT'S NOTHING TO RUN AWAY FROM, ITS TO ACKNOWLEDGE.
WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO? THAT IS THE WORK THAT WE'RE DOING RIGHT NOW.
STUDENTS LIKE COMING TO SCHOOL.
I COULD STAND HERE AND SAY, WELL, IT WAS SPRING.
THEY WANTED TO GO HOME, THEY WANTED SUMMER.
BUT WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT AS A SCHOOL? THAT'S WHERE THE WORK COMES IN.
I CAN SAY THAT IT WAS PRETTY EXCITING THAT AT THE END, 94% OF MY FIRST GRADERS KNEW THAT THEIR TEACHER CARED ABOUT THEM.
THAT'S A WIN. I'M GOING TO TAKE THAT ONE.
BECAUSE MANY OSPI, PANORAMA, THE NEWS GUY WORD, THEY RECOGNIZE TERRACE PARK IS TWO ENTITIES.
I WOULDN'T HAVE SEPARATED THE DATA OUT, BUT PANORAMA.
MY NEIGHBORHOOD CLASSES, HERE'S AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT I WOULD SEE FROM MY GRADES THREE THROUGH FIVE.
NOTICE HOW THE PERCENTAGE IN THE SPRING IS ONLY 60%.
AGAIN, I'M HOPING MY LEADERSHIP TEAM, WE ARE WORKING TOWARDS INCREASING OUR SENSE OF BELONGING BY 10%.
DASH IS GETTING ME TO BACK BEFORE PRE-PANDEMIC.
IT IS DOABLE. WE HAVE WORK TO DO.
IF I LOOK AT MY NEXT GRAPH, THESE ARE MY CHALLENGE CLASSROOMS, AND IT'S HOVERING ABOUT THE SAME AS A PERCENT ABOVE BEFORE PRE PANDEMIC, BUT THAT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
WE HAVE WORK TO DO. BUT THAT'S OKAY.
AT THE END OF THE YEAR, WE WERE ABLE TO ANALYZE THE DATA AS A TEAM.
LEADERSHIP TEAM, EQUITY TEAM, PTA, EVEN, AND SO WE TALKED ABOUT THE SECOND STEP CURRICULUM THAT WE USE FOR SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING.
WE TALKED ABOUT THE IDEA OF CREATING A SENSE OF BELONGING LESSONS.
THAT AGAIN, WE'RE TALKING TIER 1, SO THAT ALL STUDENTS, ALL CLASSROOMS WOULD RECEIVE THESE LESSONS THAT WERE SIMILAR.
AGAIN, WE'RE CREATING THE SCREENER FOR K2.
THE ADJUSTMENTS THAT I JUST TALKED ABOUT, THE FIRST ONE, BUT AGAIN, WE NEED TO ELEVATE STUDENT VOICE AND FAMILY VOICE.
WHEN I SURVEYED STUDENTS, THERE ARE MANY TIMES WHERE THEY ASKED, CAN WE SPEND MORE TIME WITH YOU? CAN WE EAT LUNCH WITH YOU? CAN WE TALK ABOUT WHAT'S GOING WELL AND WHAT IDEAS WE HAVE? LET'S DO THAT. WE'RE GOING TO WORK TOWARDS THAT TOO.
THERE'S A QUICK LITTLE GLIMPSE OF TERRORISTS PARK ELEMENTARY.
GUYS HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR ME OR ANYTHING I CAN CLARIFY.
>> YOU GUYS HAVE QUESTIONS, COMMENTS.
WELL, I'LL BE THE GOOD STUDENT.
[00:35:01]
[LAUGHTER] I APPRECIATE YOU SHARING THIS DATA, EVEN IF IT DOESN'T LOOK AS SUN SHINY AS YOU MIGHT LIKE IT TO LOOK.MY QUESTION BECAUSE I'VE WONDERED ABOUT PANORAMA DATA LIKE THIS SENSE OF BELONGING, IT'S A CONSTRUCT MADE UP OF A NUMBER OF QUESTIONS?
>> OR IT'S NOT JUST ASKING STUDENTS, DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU BELONG? IT'S THOSE OTHER THINGS.
DO YOU HAVE FRIENDS HERE, DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR TEACHER? I DON'T REMEMBER WHAT THEY ARE, BUT I FEEL LIKE THERE'S AN ADULT WHO CARES ABOUT YOU AND THE SCHOOL, THAT KIND OF THING.
I'VE WONDERED IF ALL OF THOSE QUESTIONS MAP TO WHAT WE THINK.
ACTUALLY STUDENT MAKES STUDENTS FEEL LIKE THEY BELONG.
I WONDER ABOUT THE VALIDITY OF THE CONSTRUCT.
MY QUESTION FOR YOU, AS A PRINCIPAL WHO SPENDS EVERY DAY IN THE SCHOOL.
WHAT'S YOUR SENSE OF, DO YOU FEEL LIKE THIS REFLECTS I'M A DECREASING VIBE OR ARE THERE THINGS THAT YOU SEE THAT ARE PROMISING? REAL CONCRETE WHAT MAKES YOUR STUDENTS LOOK HAPPIER TO BE THERE?
>> HERE'S THE THING. WHEN THEY'RE COMING IN, WHEN THEY'RE OUT HERE IN THE MORNING AND THEY'RE COMING IN WITH SMILES.
THERE WERE DOING HIGH FIVES, ARE TALKING ABOUT WHAT THEY DID LAST NIGHT AND ALL DIFFERENT THINGS.
WHEN THEY'RE IN THE BUILDING, THEY'RE STILL SMILING, THEY'RE WAVING AT ME BECAUSE WE HAVE A ZERO VOICE IN THE HALL AND THEY'RE ACKNOWLEDGING PEOPLE.
IT FEELS LIKE A PLACE WHERE THEY WANT TO BE.
IT FEELS THAT WAY FROM MY POINT OF VIEW.
WHEN THEY LEAVE, THEY'RE STILL SMILING.
FOR ME, THIS WAS OKAY, THAT DOESN'T MATCH HOW I'M SEEING.
BUT THEN AGAIN, THERE'S A DATA POINT SO I CAN'T IGNORE IT.
I STILL HAVE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT, BUT IT DOESN'T FEEL LIKE IT MATCHES.
>> I'M SORRY, I'LL FINISH IN A MINUTE.
BY INCLUDING SOME OF THESE STUDENTS AND THE CYCLE OF INQUIRY YOU MIGHT.
>> EXACTLY. DIFFERENT GROUPS TOO.
LAST YEAR I ONLY MET WITH MY STUDENT LEADERSHIP TEAM, BUT THAT'S JUST A LITTLE SNIPPET OF TWO KIDS FROM EVERY CLASS AND I HAVE 35 CLASSES.
WHAT OTHER GROUPS OF STUDENTS CAN I MEET WITH THAT AREN'T ON THE LEADERSHIP TEAM.
THOSE ARE THE VOICES I WANT TO HEAR FROM.
THEN I'LL COME BACK TO YOU AND SAY, THERE IS A DISCREPANCY OR IT'S ACCURATE.
WE JUST GOT SOME WORK TO DO [LAUGHTER].
>> ALONG THOSE LINES, IT WOULD BE REALLY INTERESTING TO SIT WITH SOME KIDS AND SAY, HOW DID YOU ANSWER THIS AND WHY DID YOU ANSWER IT THAT WAY, BECAUSE SOMETIMES YOU FIND OUT KIDS ARE INTERPRETING THE QUESTION DIFFERENTLY.
YEAH, IT'S HARD TO WRITE GOOD SURVEY QUESTIONS AND IT'S PARTICULARLY HARD TO WRITE GOOD SURVEY QUESTIONS ON SOMETHING LIKE FEELINGS.
>> WHEN DEBORAH IS TALKING ABOUT THE VALIDITY AND YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT THE DISCONNECT.
THE DISCONNECT COULD EASILY BE THEY THINK THEY'RE THIS ONE'S ANSWERING THIS ONE AND THIS ONE IS ANSWERING THIS AND THIS ONE'S ANSWERING THAT.
THERE MIGHT BE, BUT THAT'S DOESN'T HELP YOU HAVE YOUR SENSE OF IT.
ANYWAY. JUST A THOUGHT FROM SOMEONE WHO'S WRITTEN A BUNCH OF SURVEYS IN HER LIFE TO KNOW HOW HARD IT IS[LAUGHTER] TO DO THAT WELL.
WHAT I'M CURIOUS ABOUT, I LOVE YOUR THEORY OF ACTION BECAUSE I THINK THE NOTION OF KNOWING EVERY STUDENT'S STORY STRENGTHENED NEED IS A KEY TO MAKING THOSE CONNECTIONS AND HELPING ALL STUDENTS FEEL LIKE THEY BELONG.
I SEE THAT YOU SAY YOU'RE DEVELOPING A CURRICULUM FOR THEM TO BE ABLE TO SHARE THAT.
BUT I'M WONDERING, HOW DO YOU SEE IT? BECAUSE THE THEORY OF ACTION IS IF BUILDING STAFF KNOW THIS ABOUT EVERY KID, THEY CAN HELP MAKE THIS SENSE OF BELONGING HAPPEN.
FROM THE CURRICULUM TO HELP THEM LEARN HOW TO SHARE IT? HOW WILL THAT GET USED IN A WAY TO BUILD UPON IT? I DON'T KNOW IF MY QUESTION IS MAKING SENSE.
>> WHEN YOU SAID THAT IT MADE ME THINK OF MORNING MEETINGS, IT MADE ME THINK THAT MY TEACHERS KNOW THEIR STUDENTS.
MORNING MEETINGS IS A PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO TALK ABOUT SOME SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL.
BUT I KNOW THAT THIS STUDENT DOESN'T PARTICULARLY WANT TO ANSWER OUT LOUD.
I'M DEFINITELY BECAUSE I KNOW MY STUDENTS, I'M GOING TO SAY, YOU KNOW WHAT,
[00:40:01]
TURNED TO A BUDDY AND GO AHEAD AND TELL ONE PERSON BECAUSE I KNOW MY STUDENTS, I'M NOT GOING TO JUST HAVE THEM FEEL EXPOSED AND START THEIR DAY OFF WITH SOME ANXIETY.THAT'S KNOWING YOUR STUDENTS, KNOWING THEIR STORY.
THEN, THAT'S WHAT MADE ME THINK OF IT WHEN YOU WERE SAYING THAT.
>> I WAS JUST WONDERING IF YOU AND YOUR LEADERSHIP TEAM HAVE COME UP WITH ANY STRATEGIES THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO USE FOR THIS YEAR, OR WILL YOU LIKE TO COME UP AS YOU GO ON WITH THE YEAR?
>> WELL, LET'S JUST SAY WE NEEDED TO MAKE IMPROVEMENTS ON MAKING SURE STUDENTS, WE DIDN'T JUST TELL THEM WHAT THE SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS WERE, BUT WE PRACTICED IT, WE POSITIVE REINFORCE IT, AND WE'RE ACTUALLY POSTING IT.
WHAT A CONCEPT TO ACTUALLY SEE.
A STRATEGY FOR A TIER 1 IS TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL STUDENTS KNOW WHAT'S EXPECTED OF THEM.
TO DO THAT TOGETHER AND HAVE STUDENTS A PART OF THE VISUALS.
THAT'S WHAT WE'RE WORKING ON NOW TO GET, I GUESS ALSO INCLUDE AND GET THEIR BUY-IN.
THAT'S ONE STRATEGY WE STARTED.
>> YEAH, THIS ONE. LOOKING AT THE ROW ABOUT MY TEACHER LIKES AND CARES ABOUT ME.
I'M SEEING POSITIVE TREND THAT KIDS ARE CONFIDENT IN THEMSELVES THAT THEY CAN GO TO YOUR TEACHER, ASK THEM QUESTIONS, OR ADVOCATE FOR THEMSELVES ON SOMETHING.
I THINK THAT'S A CRITICAL SKILL THAT THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO WITH REGARDS TO THE I LIKE COMING TO SCHOOL.
KIDS, THEY JUST DON'T WANT TO GO TO SCHOOL [LAUGHTER].
>> I WANT MY KIDS TO COME TO SCHOOL, THOUGH I WANT THEM TOO.
>> YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO MAKE A POSITIVE TRANSLATION UPWARDS, BUT THAT DOWNWARD TREND, IT'S GOING TO BE THERE.
THERE ARE SOME STRANGE THINGS I SAW WITH THE I FEEL SAFE AT SCHOOL.
IT DIPPED DURING THE WINTER AND WITH THE I HAVE FRIENDS AT SCHOOL, IT JUMPED.
IS THERE AN EXPLANATION FOR THIS?
WE'RE WORKING ON IT. GOOD QUESTION THOUGH.
HI. MY NAME IS VICTORIA MCCULLOUGH.
I AM A JUNIOR AND MADILL HIGH SCHOOL.
AND I JUST HAD A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS AS A PERSON WHO HAS HAD TO TAKE THOSE PANORAMA SURVEYS OVER AND OVER THROUGHOUT MY HIGH SCHOOL JOURNEY, I JUST HAD A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW YOU DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT THE DATA IS ACCURATE OR NOT.
BECAUSE I KNOW THAT OFTENTIMES STUDENTS MAY FEEL LIKE THEIR ANSWERS OR NOT MAYBE BEING HEARD.
THAT THEY'RE JUST GETTING BUNCHED IN WITH A BUNCH OF OTHER STUDENTS.
MAYBE THE PEOPLE THAT DO NEED HELP THAT DO FEEL LIKE THEY DON'T BELONG, THAT DO FEEL UNSAFE.
HOW DO YOU MAKE IT SO THAT EACH STUDENT BELIEVES THAT THEY'RE BEING HEARD AND THEIR CONCERNS?
>> IF YOU HAVE A SUGGESTION, BECAUSE YOU'VE BEEN DOING THIS, I AM OPEN TO LIKE IF [OVERLAPPING]
>> EXCUSE ME, I'M GOING TO CONTINUE ON.
I WAS JUST GOING TO SAY THAT I BELIEVE THAT ONLINE SURVEYS ARE MAYBE NOT THE BEST AND NOT THE MOST INNOVATIVE WAY TO GET STUDENTS VOICE ACROSS.
I BELIEVE THAT A BETTER IDEA, LIKE YOU HAVE A LEADERSHIP TEAM WHICH I THINK IS AN EXCELLENT CHOICE.
BUT THEN THERE'S ALSO WHAT YOU NOTICE IN THAT MOST OF THE SCHOOL LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS IS THAT THE PEOPLE THAT DO SPEAK OUT, THAT DO STAND UP ARE EITHER EITHER PEOPLE WHO FEEL SAFE AND THAT THEY BELONG AT SCHOOL WHO CONTRIBUTE AND OTHER ACTIVITIES AND STUFF LIKE THAT.
THE PROBLEM OFTEN LIES IN STUDENTS WHO MIGHT NOT CONTRIBUTE AS MUCH, WHO KEEP TO THEMSELVES, WHO FEEL OFTEN SHY.
I BELIEVE WHAT A BETTER IDEA WOULD BE MAYBE HAVING ONE-ON-ONE MEETINGS WITH THOSE CHILDREN WHO THE TEACHERS HAVE DISCUSSED HAVE HAD PROBLEMS IN THE PAST, MAYBE SOCIALIZING, STUFF LIKE THAT AND NOT MORE OF LIKE AN INTERROGATION.
IT JUST AS LIKE MAYBE SIT WITH THEM AT LUNCH.
JUST A WAY TO GET FEEDBACK FROM THE ONES WHO ARE MAYBE AFRAID TO TALK TO YOU.
>> I WILL WEIGH IN HERE THAT PANORAMA IS SOMETHING WE EXPECT OF ALL OF OUR SCHOOLS CURRENTLY SO WELL, DR. TRACY HAPPENS TO BE THE PERSON HERE TODAY AND SHARING THEIR RESULTS.
IT IS SOMETHING THAT WE DO ACROSS OUR SCHOOLS, BUT WE ALSO DO INTEND TO INTERROGATE WHETHER PANORAMA IS THE BEST TOOL FOR US TO BE USING.
WE DECIDED TO CONTINUE WITH PANORAMA THIS YEAR BECAUSE IT WOULD GIVE US SOME CONTINUITY OF DATA POST PANDEMIC.
BUT THERE ARE OTHER TOOLS OUT THERE AND OTHER WAYS AS YOU POINT OUT, VICTORIA, TO GET THAT INFORMATION THAT WE WILL BE EXPLORING THIS YEAR.
[00:45:06]
>> HELLO. MY NAME IS SANTIAGO GONZALEZ.
I'M A CURRENT JUNIOR AT MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL.
I WAS JUST CURRENTLY WONDERING ABOUT YOUR HIGHLY CAPABLE PROGRAM AT THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LEVEL AND WHAT THAT REALLY ENTAILS FOR THIS 4TH, 5TH, AND 6TH GRADE LEVEL EDUCATION, AND WHAT REALLY MAKES THE DIFFERENCE.
>> THE HIGHLY CAPABLE PROGRAM IS FIRST THROUGH SIXTH GRADE.
QUICKLY IN A NUTSHELL, IS TO GO DEEPER AND MORE COMPLEX.
>> IS THE STRUCTURE OF THE EDUCATION OR THE CLASSROOM DIFFERENT OR IS IT MORE OF WHAT YOU'RE TEACHING THESE KIDS?
>> WHAT YOU'RE TEACHING. IF I'M A FOURTH GRADER THEN I'M LEARNING FIFTH-GRADE MATH, SO A GRADE ABOVE IN MATH.
BUT IF YOU COME TO MY SCHOOL YOU WON'T SEE A CHALLENGE SIDE OF THE SCHOOL AND THE NEIGHBORHOOD SIDE OF THE SCHOOL.
DOWN, EVEN THE PODS, WE HAVE NEIGHBORHOOD AND CHALLENGE WHERE ALL IF I'M A THIRD GRADER I HAVE LUNCH WITH THIRD GRADERS, IF I'M A SIXTH GRADER I HAVE RECESSED WITH SIXTH GRADERS.
IT REALLY IS THE CHALLENGE TEACHER AND THE WAY THEY ARE TEACHING THEIR CLASS AND THEN THERE IS A GRADE ABOVE IN MATH.
HI, MY NAME IS AMINA, I'M ALSO A JUNIOR AT MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL.
ADDING ON TO VICTORIA, I THINK GETTING RESPONSES FROM STUDENTS FROM ANOTHER STUDENT WOULD PROBABLY BE THE BEST IDEA TO GO.
AS WHEN THE STUDENT TALKS TO A TEACHER THEY MIGHT FEEL A LITTLE BIT OF FEAR AS IN THEY'RE OLDER THAN YOU, SO I THINK IT'S A GREAT IDEA OF WHAT VICTORIA SAID.
>> THANK YOU. I LOVE YOUR IDEAS. I WILL TAKE THEM.
>> DR. THERESA. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
[LAUGHTER] YOU'VE OPENED UP OBVIOUSLY ENTICING INTERESTING QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION AND FOR US TO THINK ABOUT.
IT'S SOMETHING THAT THE BOARD DIRECTORS CERTAINLY HAVE BEEN DISCUSSING IS HOW BEST TO UNDERSTAND SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING FOR OUR STUDENTS.
WHAT STRATEGY IS TO DO? HOW BEST TO UNDERSTAND HOW WELL WE'RE MEETING THE GOAL TO HAVE ALL STUDENTS BELONG? YOUR PRESENTATION HELPS TO REPRESENT AT ONE SCHOOL AND APPROACH AND GIVES A GREAT OPPORTUNITY.
IT'S BEEN GREAT TO HEAR FROM OUR STUDENT ADVISORS AS WELL.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR COMING AND HELPING TO REPRESENT TERRACE PARK, AND ALL THE GOOD WORK GOING ON.
>> THANK YOU, AND THANKS FOR PARTAKING IN THE CHAT.
THAT WAS FUN TO SEE. [LAUGHTER]
>> [LAUGHTER] IT WAS FUN. [APPLAUSE] NEXT
[10. STUDENT ADVISOR OATH OF OFFICE- 7:10 pm]
WE HAVE AN EXCITING PIECE WHERE DR.MINER IS GOING TO GIVE OUR NEW STUDENT ADVISORS. THESE ARE NOT ALL OF THEM.
WE HAVE THREE OR FOUR MORE WHO WILL BE AT THE NEXT MEETING, BUT SHE'S GOING TO GIVE YOU ALL THE OATH OF OFFICE.
I SUPPOSE THIS IS AN OFFICE. IS THAT RIGHT?
>> I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO DR. MINER.
>> IF YOU WOULD ALL COME AND STAND IN FRONT OF THE BOARD AND I HAVE CIRCLED THERE, THAT WOULD BE TERRIFIC.
WE'LL GET SOME PHOTOS AS SOON AS WE'VE GOT YOUR NAME AND WE'LL ASK THE BOARD MAYBE TO COME DOWN AS WELL TO GET A PHOTO WITH THE ENTIRE GROUP.
YOU'RE GOING TO BE FACING ME ON THIS. THERE WE GO.
THAT'S PERFECT. I'M GOING TO SAY I, AND YOU WILL STATE YOUR NAME FOR THE FIRST ONE.
READY? THIS IS A STUDENT ADVISOR OATH OF OFFICE.
>> OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON.
>> OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON.
>> AND WILL FAITHFULLY PERFORM.
>> AND WILL FAITHFULLY PERFORM.
>> THE DUTIES OF STUDENT ADVISOR.
>> THE DUTIES OF STUDENT ADVISOR.
>> AT THE EDMOND SCHOOL DISTRICT.
>> AT THE EDMOND SCHOOL DISTRICT.
>> ACCORDING TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY.
>> ACCORDING TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY.
>> PLEASE WELCOME THE STUDENTS THIS YEAR.
[APPLAUSE] > STAY RIGHT THERE. WE'RE GOING TO HAVE THE BOARD COME OVER.
>> YOU WANT TO JUST STAND THERE.
HOW MANY CAN WE SEE THE BOARD IF THEY STAND THERE OR DO WE NEED THEM TO COME DOWN?
[INAUDIBLE] [LAUGHTER] [APPLAUSE]
>> AS DR. KIM SAID, WE'LL BE SWEARING IN THE REST OF OUR STUDENTS NEXT WEEK.
LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT. IT'S SUCH A FUN THING FOR THE SUPERINTENDENT TO GET TO DO AND I GET TO DO IT TWICE THIS YEAR.
[00:50:03]
>> BEFORE WE GO ONTO THE NEXT ITEM, I DO WANT TO SAY IF THE FOLKS HERE FROM THE ROBOTICS TEAM WANT TO LEAVE, YOU'RE WELCOME TO LEAVE.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO STAY FOR THE WHOLE MEETING.
IF YOU WANT TO STAY FOR THE WHOLE MEETING, THAT WOULD BE GREAT.
BUT SOMETIMES PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW THAT IT'S OKAY.
[LAUGHTER] IT'S A SCHOOL NIGHT.
[11. SUPERINTENDENT REPORT-7:15 pm]
>> [LAUGHTER] NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS THE SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT.
>> EXCUSE ME, ONE OF THE HALLMARKS OF A BOARD SUPERINTENDENT RELATIONSHIP HAS NO SURPRISES, BUT TODAY WE GET WORD OF A GOOD SURPRISE.
I'M GOING TO GO AHEAD AND SHARE THIS WITH YOU HERE TODAY.
YOU MAY RECALL THAT LAST YEAR WE READ AN ARTICLE IN THE PAPER ABOUT SCHOOLS WHICH WERE HAVING GUARANTEED ADMISSIONS PROGRAMS TO VARIOUS COLLEGES.
THANK YOU TO GREG [INAUDIBLE], ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT, WHO WORKED ON THIS.
THIS YEAR WE WERE JUST NOTIFIED THIS MORNING THAT WE ARE ALSO INCLUDED IN THE GUARANTEED ADMISSION.
FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW ABOUT THIS, EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT STUDENTS WHO HAVE A MINIMUM OF A 3.0 GPA OR HIGHER AND THEY HAVE COMPLETED OR ARE ON TRACK TO COMPLETE BY THE FALL OF 2024 THE COLLEGE, ACADEMIC DISTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTS THAT'S LIKE FOUR YEARS OF ENGLISH, ETC.
WILL BE GUARANTEED ADMISSION TO ANY OF THE FOLLOWING UNIVERSITIES, CENTRAL WASHINGTON, EASTERN WASHINGTON, EVERGREEN STATE COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON TACOMA, WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY, AND WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY.
WE'RE REALLY EXCITED THAT THIS WILL BE SOMETHING THAT'S AVAILABLE TO OUR STUDENTS AS A PART OF THEIR RANGE OF OPTIONS, AND WE JUST FOUND OUT THIS MORNING, SO I'M VERY EXCITED TO SHARE THAT HERE TONIGHT.
>> IT'S A GOOD ONE. [LAUGHTER] IT'S A GOOD ONE FOR SURE.
NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS APPROVAL OF MINUTES.
[12. APPROVAL OF MINUTES-7:20 pm]
WE HAVE TWO MEETINGS FOR WHICH WE WANT TO APPROVE THE MINUTES, ONE FROM THE SEPTEMBER 12TH STUDY SESSION THAT WAS ON THE CAPITAL TECH LEVY AND THE OTHER ON THE MINUTES FROM THE SEPTEMBER 12TH REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING.DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND?
>> IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE, I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF APPROVING THE MINUTES FROM THE TWO, SEPTEMBER 12TH MEETINGS, PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE.
ANY ABSTENTIONS? THE MINUTES FROM THE TWO BOARD MEETINGS ON SEPTEMBER 12TH, 2023 ARE APPROVED.
NEXT, WE HAVE PUBLIC COMMENTS.
[13. PUBLIC COMMENTS-7:25 pm]
THE PUBLIC COMMENTS SECTION OF THE AGENDA IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PEOPLE TO ADDRESS THE SCHOOL BOARD.SINCE THIS IS A BUSINESS MEETING OF THE SCHOOL BOARD, THE PURPOSE OF PUBLIC COMMENTS IS FOR THOSE INTERESTED TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS ABOUT ITEMS ON THE AGENDA OR OTHER SPECIFIC WORK WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
THIS IS NOT A TIME FOR THE AUDIENCE TO ADDRESS EACH OTHER.
ITEMS BROUGHT FORWARD DURING THIS PORTION OF THE MEETING ARE NOT TYPICALLY ACTED UPON BY THE BOARD AT THIS TIME, BUT MAYBE FOLLOWED UP BY THE BOARD, THE SUPERINTENDENT, AND OR STAFF AT A LATER TIME.
PEOPLE MAY SUBMIT PUBLIC COMMENTS FOR A BOARD MEETING IN THREE DIFFERENT WAYS.
YOU MAY CHOOSE TO READ YOUR COMMENT ALOUD IN PERSON, YOU MAY CHOOSE TO READ YOUR COMMENT ALOUD VIRTUALLY, OR YOU MAY CHOOSE TO SUBMIT YOUR COMMENT IN WRITING.
THE BOARD READS ALL WRITTEN COMMENTS WHICH ARE LATER ATTACHED TO THE MEETING AGENDA AND AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC ON THE BOARDDOCS WEBSITE.
TONIGHT WE DO HAVE ONE COMMENT THAT'S GOING TO BE MADE VIRTUALLY, AND WE HAVE SEVERAL COMMENTS THAT WILL BE MADE IN PERSON, AND WE RECEIVED SEVERAL COMMENTS IN WRITING, ALL DEALING WITH THE PRACTICE SPACE FOR THE ROBOTICS TEAM.
THE BOARD ALSO ACCEPTS WRITTEN COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS AT ANYTIME THROUGH EMAIL.
WE READ EACH COMMENT AND EMAIL WE RECEIVE AND WE APPRECIATE THE TIME AND EFFORT THAT IT TAKES FOR THOSE WHO WRITE THEM.
WHILE WE ENCOURAGE AND APPRECIATE PUBLIC COMMENTS, PLEASE LIMIT YOUR COMMENTS THAT ARE READ ALOUD TO THREE MINUTES.
IF A COMMENT BECOMES TOO LENGTHY, I MAY NEED TO INTERRUPT IN ORDER TO ALLOW EACH PERSON EQUAL TIME.
WE ALSO ASK THOSE WHO ARE MAKING A PUBLIC COMMENT TO PLEASE MAKE THEIR STATEMENTS IN A CIVIL MANNER WITHOUT DISPARAGING, NAME-CALLING OR OTHERWISE TARGETING ANY ONE PERSON OR GROUP IN THE DISTRICT.
SIMILARLY, WE ASK EVERYONE IN THE AUDIENCE TO PLEASE SHOW RESPECT BY LISTENING QUIETLY WITHOUT TALKING OR WHISPERING TO EACH OTHER SO THAT EVERYONE CAN HEAR EACH COMMENT.
WE'RE GOING TO START WITH OUR FIRST VIRTUAL COMMENT, WHICH IS GOING TO BE DONE BY KYLE PIHL.
[00:55:06]
>> KYLE PIHL. THIS IS HIGH COACH OF JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL ROBOTICS TEAM, 2010.
>> HI, ARE YOU ABLE TO HEAR ME?
>> YES, WE CAN HEAR YOU, THANK YOU.
>> AWESOME. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING ME.
MY SISTER CHRISTY ACTUALLY TEACHES IN YOUR DISTRICT, SO I'M FAMILIAR WITH YOU GUYS.
I'M A TEACHER AT HENRY M. JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL, AND AS THEY POINTED OUT, I'M THE HEAD COACH FOR FOC 2910 JACK IN THE BOT, NEVER AT SCHOOL DISTRICTS.
I'VE BEEN IN EDUCATION PROFESSIONALLY FOR NEARLY A DECADE NOW, AND I COME FROM A FAMILY OF EDUCATORS AND I ASKED TO SPEAK TONIGHT BECAUSE I HEARD THAT THE ROYALS AND CHILL OUT WE'RE PRESENTING ABOUT THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS THIS PAST SEASON AND ABOUT THE PRACTICE FIELD SPACE.
I WILL ALSO BE HAPPY TO FORMALLY INVITE YOU GUYS TO AN OFF-SEASON EVENTS TO SEE BOTH OF YOUR TEAMS IN ACTION AND IF YOU WISH TO PERSONALLY WALK YOU THROUGH THE COMPETITION BITS, LETS YOU SEE THE TEAMS AND SHARE THE JOY THAT WE FIND IN FIRST WITH YOU.
YOU HEARD THE KIDS AND OTHERS SPEAK ABOUT PROFESSIONALISM AND CO-OPETITION, INCLUSION, AND A CULTURE OF KINDNESS.
THE KIDS ARE FRIENDLY AND AMAZING, BUT I WILL SPECIFICALLY POINT OUT THAT YOUR STUDENTS ARE IMPRESSIVE.
SPEAKING AS THEIR NEIGHBOR, I WANT TO TELL YOU THAT BOTH OF YOUR TEAMS ARE HELD IN EXTREMELY HIGH REGARD AMONG OVER 120 TEAMS IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST.
YOUR ROYALS WON AN AWARD FOR THEIR GRACIOUS PROFESSIONALISM AT THEIR FIRST EVENT LAST YEAR.
BOTH TEAMS ADVANCED TO THE DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP WHICH REQUIRES THEM TO BE IN THE TOP THIRD OF TEAMS IN THE P&W.
CHILL OUT FROM MY PERSPECTIVE, MADE SOME TOUGH AND HONESTLY FANTASTIC DESIGN DECISIONS FOLLOWING THEIR WEEK 1 EVENTS THAT REQUIRED REALLY MATURE APPROACHES TO ENGINEERING.
THE MISSION OF FIRST IS INSPIRATION AND I WANT TO ENCOURAGE YOUR BOARD TO CONSIDER YOUR FIRST PROGRAMS THROUGH THIS LENS, NOT JUST WHAT YOUR STUDENTS ARE DOING OR HOW MANY ARE CURRENTLY ENROLLED, BUT IT SHIFTS TO TWO MAIN QUESTIONS WHICH IS WHAT OUR STUDENTS INSPIRED TO DO AND HOW ARE THEY INSPIRED AND INSPIRING OTHERS.
IN THIS WAY, I WOULD ENCOURAGE YOU TO THINK ABOUT YOUR PROGRAMS AND THAT PRACTICE FIELD SPACE THAT YOU HAVE DIFFERENTLY THAN YOU MAY CURRENTLY BE THINKING OF IT.
WE KNOW THAT AD SPACES FOSTER COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION.
AS A RESULT OF YOUR DISTRICTS LEADERSHIP TEAMS ARE MORE FAMILIAR WITH EACH OTHER.
THEY BECOME FRIENDS IN THE CHALLENGE, THEY BREAK DOWN SOCIAL BARRIERS.
THEY GET COMFORTABLE APPROACHING A DIFFICULT CHALLENGE TOGETHER.
THE KIDS BEING AMAZING KIDS THAT YOU'VE SEEN TODAY.
THEY WILL CONTINUE TO BENEFIT FROM THIS PROGRAM BUT THEY ARE ALSO THROUGH THEIR OUTREACH TO BECOMING THE VERY INSPIRATION THAT WE SOUGHT TO PASS OFF TO THEM.
THEY GENERATE A PASSION FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND THEIR PEERS AND THE NEXT GENERATION OF ROBOTICS STUDENTS.
THEY TACKLE TOUGH PROBLEMS AND PERSISTENT SOLVING THEM, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THEY DO THIS BY TACKLING THE TASK OF BEING KIND.
TRULY, THE PURPOSE OF ME COMING IN TODAY IS JUST TO SAY THANK YOU, HOW MUCH I ADMIRE YOUR BOARD, YOUR DISTRICT, YOUR COMMITMENT TO FIRST ROBOTICS, YOUR COMMITMENT TO ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE, AND HOW YOU TREAT PEOPLE IN YOUR ORGANIZATIONS AND SUPPORT YOUR ROBOTICS TEAMS, I THINK IS PHENOMENAL AND JUST THANK YOU.
IT'S REALLY A TESTIMONY TO YOUR COMMUNITY.
THE FIRST IN-PERSON COMMENT WILL BE DONE BY CYNTHIA NELSON.
>> IF YOU CAN JUST HOLD ON, WE'RE GOING TO MAKE SURE YOUR MIC IS LIVE.
>> CAN YOU HEAR ME BETTER NOW? I THINK MOST OF YOU KNOW WHO I AM, THE FORMER RETIRED TECHNOLOGY DIRECTOR, AND I ALWAYS TELL PEOPLE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FIRST ROBOTICS AND ATHLETIC SPORTS IS THAT WE'RE THE SPORT OF THE BRAIN AND MOST OF OUR STUDENTS BECOME PROFESSIONAL IN THAT AREA.
WE'RE REALLY HAPPY THAT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT LETS US USE THESE FACILITIES BECAUSE I ALSO WANT TO POINT OUT THAT WE GET NO FUNDING FROM THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, BUT WE DO GET USE OF THAT FACILITY AND THAT'S WHY IT'S VERY IMPORTANT.
NOW THAT WE HAVE STUDENTS THAT NEED ASL INTERPRETERS, WE ALSO HAVE THAT, SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THAT SUPPORT.
I JUST I'M A LITTLE CONCERNED THAT WHEN THINGS CHANGE AND I'M AFRAID THAT EVENTUALLY WE WILL LOSE OUR PRACTICE FIELD, WHILE NO BASKETBALL TEAMS WILL LOSE THEIR FIELDS OR FOOTBALL OR TENNIS,
[01:00:04]
I'M JUST ENCOURAGING THE SCHOOL BOARD TO KEEP THINKING MAYBE JUST ONE STEM FIELD FOR THE WHOLE SCHOOL DISTRICT.I THINK AS KEVIN MENTIONED, OUR TEAM IS STARTING A FIRST LEGO LEAGUE TEAM AT OAK HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY THIS YEAR.
IN FACT, NOT ONLY THAT, BUT ANOTHER RETIRED EDMOND SCHOOL DISTRICT PERSON, SANDRA SMITH, SHE AND HER HUSBAND ARE DOING A FIRST LEGO LEAGUE EXPLORE TEAM AT OAK HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY, WHERE THEY TEACH SECOND GRADERS ABOUT WHAT DOES BUILDING SOMETHING PROGRAMMING, SOLVING PROBLEMS, DOING PRESENTATIONS LOOK LIKE.
I THINK IT'S REALLY EXCITING THAT RETIRED EDMOND SCHOOL DISTRICT STAFF ARE WILLING TO PUT IN TIME FOR FIRST ROBOTICS EVEN AT ELEMENTARY LEVEL OR HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR LISTENING TO ME AGAIN.
>> THE NEXT SPEAKER IS GERALD WHITMARSH.
>> THE FOLLOWING IS A NEWS ARTICLE THAT I GATHERED FROM WOMEN SYSTEM.COM.
IT WAS PUBLISHED A WEEK AGO ENTITLED SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING PIONEER SURRENDERS THERAPISTS LICENSED FOLLOWING EVIDENCE OF TEEN SEXUAL ABUSE COVER UP.
ON SEPTEMBER 1ST, A WEEK AFTER PUBLICATION OF AN INVESTIGATION ON JENNIFER FREED, SHE WROTE ON HER BLOG THAT SHE WAS SURRENDERING THE LICENSE SHE HAD HELD FOR THE PAST FOUR DECADES.
FREED IS THE FOUNDER OF AHA SANTA BARBARA, WHICH IS PAID BY THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO CONDUCT TALK CIRCLES WITH CHILDREN WHILE ALSO RUNNING AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS. EVIDENCE SUGGESTS THAT FREED, WHO HAS USHERED INTO SCHOOLS BASED ON HER CREDENTIALS AS A PSYCHOLOGIST, MARKETS HERSELF AS ASTROLOGISTS AND SEX GURU, REPEATEDLY FAILED TO DISCLOSE CASES OF RAPE OR ABUSE.
FREED'S WRITING SUGGESTED SHE WAS COACHING YOUNG TEEN GIRLS TO BE MORE SEXUAL IN ORDER TO RELIVE EXPERIENCES FROM HER YOUTH.
QUOTE, I HAD JUST FINISHED MY PHD IN PSYCHOLOGY AND WHAT MY 400 PAGE DISSERTATION WAS ON IS TEEN GIRLS AND SEX THAT LED ME TO REALIZE WHAT'S MISSING IN EDUCATION IS WHAT'S MISSING FOR GIRLS AND GUYS.
I CREATED THIS PROGRAM CALLED SEXUAL WISDOM, SHE SAID, IT WAS BUILT TO PARENTS AS RELATIONSHIP WISDOM.
IN THE DISSERTATION, FREED REPEATEDLY SAYS SHE LOOKED AT SEX BY YOUNG TEENS AS A RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE AND VIEWS HERSELF AS A PRIESTESS, USHERING YOUNG GIRLS THROUGH IT.
QUOTE, ENTERING JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL, WE SLOWLY PROGRESSED TO GENITAL PLAY, WHERE WE DELIGHTED IN THE MIRACLES OF MUTUAL AROUSAL.
THE 2003 DISSERTATION SET OUT TO ESTABLISH THE NEED FOR PROGRAMS LIKE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING, WHICH HAS SINCE SWEPT K12 SCHOOLS.
IN IT FREED TRANSCRIBED INTERVIEWS WITH FOUR GIRLS TALKING ABOUT EXPERIENCES.
SHE HOPED TO PAINT A PORTRAIT OF A UTOPIA WHERE YOUNG TEENS HAD LOTS OF GREAT SEX.
SHARING THEIR DETAILS WITH HER AS AN ADULT MENTOR AS AN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT.
INSTEAD, ALL FOUR GIRLS DESCRIBE SITUATIONS THEY REGRETTED DESPITE FREED REPEATEDLY TRYING TO GET THEM TO TALK ABOUT PLEASURE.
ALL FOUR DISCLOSED CRIMES, RAPE OR STATUTORY RAPE, WHICH FREED HAS NO RECORD OF REPORTING PER MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS.
NAFTA ZIGER, THE PROSECUTOR, SET HER DISSERTATION, MAKES IT PRETTY CLEAR SHE WASN'T INTERESTED IN TRULY HELPING THESE GIRLS.
SHE JUST WANTED TO BRAINWASH THEM THAT BEING RAPED WAS A GOOD THING END QUOTE, SEL OFTEN BRINGS STUDENTS INTO CONTACT WITH ADULTS FOR INTIMATE DISCUSSIONS SOMETIMES TOUTING THAT FORMER GANG MEMBERS AND THE LAKES HAVE A UNIQUE ABILITY TO RELATE TO YOUTHS.
AHA HAS HIRED STAFF OFF OF CRAIGSLIST.
>> THE NEXT SPEAKER IS ANTHONY SHAPIRO.
[01:05:01]
>> GOOD EVENING. I'D LIKE TO DRAW THE COMPARISON BETWEEN THOSE SPRAY BRITISH SOLDIERS OF LONDON WHO ENDURED THE BLITZ AND THE WINTER OF 1940 WITH THOSE OF YOU WHO MANAGE AND TEACH IN THIS DISTRICT.
THE CITIZENS OF BRITAIN SACRIFICED THE CHANCE OF LIVING WITH THEIR KIDS IN THE WAR TO HELP ASSURE THAT THEY WOULD LIVE TO SEE THE END OF THE WAR BY SENDING THEM OUT INTO THE HINTERLANDS AND THUS ESCAPING THE DEATH AND DESTRUCTION THE NAZIS WERE INFLICTING UPON LONDON.
THESE BRAVE CITIZENS CHOSE TO STAY THE COURSE IN LONDON, TAKING THEIR CHANCES TO LIVE, YET ENDURE THE HELL OF WAR, AND TO EXHALE OUR CHILDREN TO RESIDE WITH STRANGERS CLINGING TO THE HOPE THEIR LINEAGE WOULD CONTINUE AND THERE'LL BE FUTURE GENERATIONS TO CARRY ON THE GLORY OF BRITAIN.
LET'S COMPARE THE CHARACTER OF THAT GENERATION WITH THIS COUNTRY'S EDUCATIONAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX.
SPECIFICALLY THIS DISTRICTS TAKE TOWARD THE SUPPOSED TRANSITION MOVEMENTS SWEEPING OUR YOUNGER GENERATION.
THE FACT THERE'S NO ONE CAN TRANSITION FROM ONE SEX TO THE OTHER.
THE INHERENT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO CANNOT BE RECREATED IN AN INDIVIDUAL BY MODERN SCIENCE, AS HAS BEEN DISCUSSED AT THIS VERY PODIUM.
HE HAD NOT ONLY ARE YOU PERMITTING THIS TO HAPPEN, YOU ARE ENCOURAGING IT UNDER THE GUISE OF BEING COMPASSIONATE, BY INDOCTRINATING THESE KIDS TO BELIEVE THEY ARE IN THE WRONG BODY AND THEN LEADING THEM TO EMBRACE THE FEUDAL IDEA THAT THEY CAN BECOME THE OPPOSITE SEX WOULD BE MADE A CRIME IN A MORE CIVIL SOCIETY.
HISTORICALLY, IT IS THE AGE OF COGNITIVE DISCERNMENT LATE IN THE TEENS AND EARLY '20S WHEN OUR SOCIETY LEGALLY ALLOWED OUR YOUTH TO DRIVE VOTES, SMOKE, CONSUME ALCOHOL, AND JOIN THE MILITARY.
YET THIS DISTRICT AND STATE ARE ENCOURAGING THE DECISION THAT HAS A PERMANENT LIFELONG CONSEQUENCES ON YOUNGER AND YOUNGER CHILDREN WITHOUT PARENTAL OVERSIGHT.
OR THERE'S A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF THE HUMAN POPULATION HISTORICALLY AROUND 0.3% WHO MIGHT HAVE THIS BELIEF THE PROPORTIONS OF CHILDREN WE ARE SEEING TODAY UPWARDS AT 20% AND EVEN HIGHER.
ACCEPT IN THIS NOTION, IT'S DUE TO THE INDOCTRINATION, PEER PRESSURE, AND THE MENTALITY FOISTED UPON THEM BY THE EDUCATIONAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX.
I WILL CLOSE WITH THE POINT THAT THE BRITISH GENERATION OF WORLD WAR II SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES SO THEIR CHILDREN TO HAVE A LEGACY TO LIVE.
THIS GENERATION IS SACRIFICING THE NEXT-GENERATION ON THE ALTAR OF TRANSGENDERISM, WHICH WILL DISABLE THEM FROM BEING ABLE TO HAVE A FUTURE GENERATION. THANK YOU.
>> THE NEXT SPEAKER IS KAREN MOSMAN.
MY NINE-YEAR-OLD GRANDCHILD WAS IN THEIR WORDS, CALLED DOWN FOR ASKING A QUESTION IN CLASS.
YOU MIGHT BE THINKING, WHY WOULD THAT BE? NINE-YEAR-OLDS ARE INQUISITIVE AND LEARNING ALL ABOUT THE WORLD AROUND THEM.
HOWEVER, MY GRANDCHILD SIMPLY ASKED THE QUESTION AS THEY WERE CONFUSED THAT HOW COULD THE STUDENT NEXT TO THEM, CLEARLY A BOY, SAY HE'S A GIRL.
IS IT THE DISTRICT'S EXPECTATION THAT STUDENTS, REGARDLESS OF AGE OR NOT TO ASK QUESTIONS, OR IS IT ONLY IF IT DOESN'T LINE UP WITH THE NARRATIVE OR GENDER BEING PROMOTED.
THIS CLEARLY VIOLATES A FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHT.
IN CLOSING FROM THE PROPHET ISAIAH, WOE TO THOSE WHO CALL EVIL GOOD AND GOOD EVIL. THANK YOU.
>> THE LAST SPEAKER IS PATRICIA SIMON.
>> THANK YOU. I'M PATRICIA SIMON AND I'M A TAXPAYER LIVE IN LYNNWOOD.
I WAS MOST CONCERNED AND WANTED TO SPEAK LAST WEEK, BUT NOW I GET A CHANCE.
AS YOU ARE WELL AWARE, THERE WAS A MURDER IN GLENDALE PARK, LABOR DAY, 10:00 PM ON THE BASKETBALL COURTS THAT MY DAUGHTER USED TO PLAY ON 200 YARDS FROM LINDELL ELEMENTARY.
I CALLED THE OFFICE MANAGER TO SEE HOW THEY WERE HANDLING THAT AND SHE SAID, WELL, THE PARENTS ARE VERY CONCERNED.
SHE LIVES IN THE NEIGHBORHOODS, SO THEY HAVE A NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH AND THEY'RE REALLY LOOKING OUT FOR ONE ANOTHER.
A 17 YEAR OLD DEAD, ONE IN CRITICAL CARE,
[01:10:01]
AND THREE OTHERS INVOLVED.I FOLLOW THE EVERETT HERALD, BUT I HAVEN'T HEARD OR HAVEN'T READ HOW IT HAS WORKED THROUGH ON THE ONE IN THE HOSPITAL.
BUT THERE HAVE BEEN FLOWERS LAID OUT FOR THE ONE WHO DIED AT THE PARK.
I ASKED WHAT WOULD BE HER ANSWER FOR IMPROVING ON THE MURDERS THAT ARE HAPPENING IN OUR COMMUNITY? SHE THOUGHT THAT REPLACING THE RESOURCE OFFICERS THAT WERE TAKEN OUT SEVERAL YEARS AGO BY THE BOARD AND REALLY FELT THAT THEY GOT TO KNOW THE STUDENTS, THEY GOT TO KNOW WHERE THE GANGS WERE STARTING AND BUILDING UP OR DISPUTES, AND THEY ACTUALLY KNEW THE KIDS COULD INTERVENE PERSONALLY.
THAT WAS HER ADDITION OR HER INPUT.
I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE THE ADDITION THAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE POSTING OF THE 10 COMMANDMENTS BACK IN EVERY PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOL IN SNOHOMISH COUNTY.
THIS BEING THE SET OF RULES FOR HUMAN LIFE AND FOR A CIVIL SOCIETY.
I REALIZED THAT IN 1980, THE SUPREME COURT RULED THAT IT WAS DECLARED UNCONSTITUTIONAL TO POST THEM IN THE STONE VERSUS GRAHAM DECISION.
STATE OF TEXAS RECENTLY, THIS LAST MAY TRIED TO MAKE IT MANDATORY THAT ALL PUBLIC SCHOOLS WOULD BE REQUIRED TO POST THE 10 COMMANDMENTS BUT IT FAILED TO MEET A VOTING DEADLINE ON MAY 24TH, SO THERE ARE GROUPS OR STATES RISING TO THE OCCASION.
THE EAGLES HAVE PRESENTED THE 10 COMMANDMENTS HERE TO THE EVERETT POLICE DEPARTMENT.
THEY'RE POSTED OUT FRONT FOR ALL TO SEE.
I BELIEVE THIS WOULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO SEE THESE 10 COMMANDMENTS IN EVERY SCHOOL POSTED.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT WOULD MAKE IF STUDENTS WERE TO HEAR OF THE GOD WHO LOVES THEM AND WANTS THEM TO HAVE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL OUTCOME OF THEIR LIVES.
THAT WOULD BE TO HAVE NO OTHER GOD BEFORE THEM, TO HONOR THEIR FATHER AND MOTHER, TO DO NOT STEAL ANYTHING, DO NOT MURDER OF YOUR NEIGHBOR, AND LEAVE HIS POSSESSIONS AND HIS SPOUSE TO HIMSELF.
>> THANK YOU. NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS OUR CONSENT AGENDA.
[14. CONSENT AGENDA-7:55 pm]
THIS IS A GROUP OF ROUTINE ITEMS THAT WE VOTE ON AS A BLOCK.WE CAN DISCUSS THEM SEPARATELY AND/OR VOTE ON ANY OF THEM SEPARATELY IF WE CHOOSE TO DO SO.
TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA CONSISTS OF EIGHT ITEMS. FIVE RELATE TO PERSONNEL AND AGREEMENTS WITH STAFF GROUPS ON VARIOUS TOPICS.
ONE IS OUR MONTHLY APPROVAL OF BILLS AND VOUCHERS.
ONE IS AN MOU WITH THE SHORELINE COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO PARTNER WITH US FOR OUR CTE DUAL CREDIT PROGRAM AND ONE IS A FIELD TRIP.
DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND?
>> I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE, I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA, PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE.
>> DIRECTOR SMITH, ARE YOU HERE? DID WE LOOSE HIM? WELL, ALL THOSE OPPOSED SAY NAY.
ANY ABSTENTIONS? THE CONSENT AGENDA PASSES.
>> WE HAVE ONE REPORT AND PRESENTATION THAT ONE REPORT THIS EVENING,
[15. REPORTS-8:00 pm]
15.1 BUSINESS AND FINANCE REPORT, BROUGHT TO US BY DIRECTOR OF FINANCE, LYDIA SALLY.>> IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT JULY AND IT'S ALMOST OCTOBER.
I GUESS I DO HAVE THE CLICKER.
WHILE WE'RE STILL UNDERGOING, BASICALLY, WE HAVE CONVERTED TO CUMULATIVE, BUT THERE HAVE BEEN SOME INSTANCES WHERE WE'RE STILL WORKING THE BUGS OUT.
IN JUNE WE HAD THE DOUBLED UP ENCUMBRANCES AND IN JULY WE HAVE NO ENCUMBRANCES AT THE MOMENT.
AUGUST IS THE CONCLUSION OF THE FISCAL YEAR, SO THE AUGUST REPORT, WE NEVER HAVE ENCUMBRANCES BECAUSE WE CLOSE OUT THE YEAR.
COME THE SEPTEMBER REPORT, YOU SHOULD SEE ENCUMBRANCES AGAIN.
[01:15:08]
I DIDN'T MAKE A NOTE ON THIS BEFORE I PRESENTED THIS OR POSTED THIS ON THE BOARD AGENDA.BUT AS I'M STARTING TO WORK ON YEAR END, I'M A LITTLE BIT NERVOUS, I SHOULD SAY, THAT THE NET CHANGE IN FUND BALANCE, WE'RE EXPECTING TO DRAW DOWN THE FUND BALANCE BY ABOUT THREE OR FOUR MILLION, BUT JULY CAME IN ABOUT OVER FIVE MILLION, LESS THAN IT WAS THE PREVIOUS JULY.
WE ARE WORKING HARD TO ANALYZE ALL OUR GRANTS, ALL OUR FUNDING, ALL OUR EXPENSES, AND JUST KEEPING THAT IN MIND.
AGAIN, JULY EXPENDITURES, WE GET REIMBURSEMENT BACK IN AUGUST.
AUGUST EXPENDITURES, WHICH WE WON'T KNOW ALL OF AUGUST EXPENDITURES UNTIL THE SEPTEMBER PAYROLL IS POSTED, WHICH SOUNDS ODD.
BUT IF WE HAVE PEOPLE PAID ON A TIME SHEET IN AUGUST, THEY DON'T GET PAID UNTIL SEPTEMBER 30TH AND THEN WE MOVE THOSE COSTS BACK TO THE 22, 23 FISCAL YEAR AND THEN WE CAN ASK IF IT'S A FEDERAL GRANT, THEN WE CAN ASK FOR REIMBURSEMENT.
A LOT OF STEPS BEFORE WE KNOW WHAT THE FINAL CONCLUSION OF AUGUST IS.
JULY, PROJECTED EXPENDITURES ARE TRACKING.
AGAIN, AUGUST APPEARS TO BE JUST A BIT HIGHER THAN EXPECTATIONS AND WE'LL JUST KEEP DOING OUR WORK FOR YEAR END CLOSE.
ALSO WHEN THIS WAS PRODUCED FOR THE JULY DATA, IT WAS STILL TRACKING PRETTY WELL.
IT MAY BE A BIT DOWN FROM THAT WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE.
AGAIN, JUNE WAS THE FINAL MONTH OF ENROLLMENT, SO THERE IS NO CHANGES IN JULY.
THEN IF YOU WOULD PULL UP THE OTHER REPORT, IF YOU DON'T MIND, ON THE AGENDA.
THIS IS OUR NEW BUDGET STATUS, WHICH COMING OUT OF CUMULATIVE.
DESPITE THE FACT THAT THERE ARE NO ENCUMBRANCES, I DO FIND THAT IT IS MORE LEGIBLE AND EASIER TO READ, SO I DO APPRECIATE CUMULATIVE FOR THAT LITTLE BIT OF AN UPGRADE.
>> THANK YOU. ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS?
>> I WAS JUST CURIOUS HOW OUR ENROLLMENT FIRST FOOT DAY OR SEPTEMBER ENROLLMENT DATA IS LOOKING AS YOU HONE IN THE DATA BETTER.
>> SURE. IN A NORMAL YEAR AS DR.
MINER WOULD SAY WE ARE WITHIN A VERY SMALL PERCENTAGE OFF OF WHAT WE BUDGETED.
BUT UNFORTUNATELY, WE CAME IN ABOUT 94 FULL-TIME EQUIVALENT STUDENTS SHY OF OUR BUDGET.
WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO OCTOBER, SEE HOW MANY STUDENTS RETURN TO SCHOOL A LOT OF TIMES IN SEPTEMBER IF THEY DIDN'T HAVE THEIR VACCINATIONS COMPLETE, THEY COULDN'T ATTEND SCHOOL IN SEPTEMBER.
IF THEY WERE FINISHING UP THEIR VACATION AND DIDN'T MAKE IT BACK UNTIL THE FIFTH DAY OF SCHOOL AND THEY WEREN'T COUNTED IN SEPTEMBER.
WE WERE 94 DOWN, BASICALLY ABOUT HALF OF THAT IS IN GRADES ONE THROUGH 12.
WHEN YOU SPREAD IT OUT OVER ALMOST 20,000 STUDENTS, THAT'S NOT BAD, BUT OUR KINDERGARTEN WAS SHY OVER 50 OF OUR PROJECTIONS, AND OUR PROJECTIONS WERE VERY CONSERVATIVE THIS YEAR.
WE'LL JUST KEEP WATCHING IT AND HOPE THAT ENROLLMENT IMPROVES IN OCTOBER.
>> JUST GOING TO ADD THAT, THAT'S IN KEEPING AND TALKING WITH MY SUPERINTENDENT COLLEAGUES WITH WHAT MOST IN SNOHOMISH COUNTY ARE SEEING EXCEPT SOME OF THE FARTHEST OUT DISTRICTS.
IT DEPENDS ON HOW THEY PROJECT IT.
HOW CAN VERY CONSERVATIVELY THEY'RE PROJECTED,
[01:20:02]
BUT MOST ARE SEEING THAT THEIR KINDERGARTEN CLASSES ARE SMALLER THIS YEAR.>> OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS?
>> THANK YOU AND THANK YOU FOR PARTICULARLY LOOKING CLOSELY AT THAT FUND BALANCE SITUATION BECAUSE THAT'S OBVIOUSLY OF CONCERN TO US. WE APPRECIATE THAT.
>> WE HAVE TWO ITEMS OF NEW BUSINESS THIS EVENING.
[16. NEW BUSINESS- 8:15 pm]
THE FIRST WITH RECOGNITION AND APPRECIATION TO THE BOARD ON DEVELOPMENT OF THE SCHOOL BOARD GOALS.I APPRECIATE THAT WE ARE STAYING THE COURSE AND CONTINUING TO MAINTAIN OUR FOCUS BY IMPROVING THESE, THIS EVENING, SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO DO SO, THAT WILL ALLOW ME TO DEVELOP AND SUPPORT YOUR GOALS THROUGH MY GOALS.
>> DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND? MOVE TO APPROVE?
>> I'M REALLY THRILLED THAT WE'VE, WITH ALL THE WORK THAT HAS BEEN PUT IN BY THIS BOARD, AND TO ALIGN GOALS FOR THE BOARD.
NANCY'S BEEN A PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT PROJECT TO YOU, BUT ALL OF US ALSO, BUT I DO APPRECIATE YOU.
I'M SPEARHEADING THIS TO MAKE SURE THAT WE WERE ABLE TO COME TONIGHT AND ADOPT THESE PARTICULAR BOARD GOALS.
I REALLY APPRECIATE THE WORK ON IT AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO US WORKING TOGETHER IN ALIGNMENT WITH OUR STRATEGIC PLAN.
>> OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS.
I'D LIKE TO PARTICULARLY THANK DR.
MINER BECAUSE SHE REALLY HELPED US ALIGN OUR GOALS WITH THE STRATEGIC PLAN AND WITH THE WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION HAS STANDARDS.
I THINK HAVING THEM AS WONDERFUL LAST YEAR WAS THE FIRST YEAR WE USED THEM AT OUR RETREAT TO DO A SELF-APPRAISAL OF, HOW WELL ARE WE DOING? WHERE DO WE WANT TO GET MORE ATTENTION? WHAT HAVEN'T WE LOOKED AT, WHAT DO WE FEEL LIKE IT'S GOING WELL OR THAT WE'RE CONCERNED WITH AND HAVING THE CONTINUATION OF THE WORK.
BUT USING THE GOALS AS LIKE DR.
MINER SET AS A TOOL NOT ONLY TO ALIGN THE SUPERINTENDENT'S GOALS AND THE STRATEGIC PLAN, BUT OUR WORK AND MAKING SURE THAT THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS ALSO ARE ALL IN ALIGNMENT.
HAVING THAT ALIGNMENT ACROSS THE DISTRICT IS A KEY PIECE OF AN EFFECTIVE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
I WANT TO THANK ALL MY BOARD COLLEAGUES AND DR.
MINER FOR HELPING US TO STAY THE COURSE BUT YOU CAN'T STAY THE COURSE WITHOUT GOALS.
>> CAN I JUST ASK THAT WE PUT THEM UP HERE? I DON'T THINK ALL OUR STUDENTS KNOW WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT AND MAYBE NOT THE AUDIENCE EITHER.
>> IT'S THE ATTACHMENT ON THIS ONE?
>> IT'S AN ATTACHMENT RIGHT IN THE AGENDA RIGHT NEXT TO THE REPORT.
>> YOU CAN SEE ONE THING ABOUT GOALS IS NEVER HAVE TOO MANY.
SOME SAY DON'T EVER HAVE MORE THAN THREE TO FIVE.
WE HAVE NINE, BUT MANY OF THEM GO TOGETHER.
YOU CAN SEE THAT PROBABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT GOAL IS THE SECOND SET, WHICH IS THE ONE THAT DIRECTLY DEALS WITH STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT.
WHAT'S VERY IMPORTANT IS WE'RE SAYING WE WANT AT THE EARLY LEVEL FOR OUR KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS TO BE READY FOR GRADE 1 BECAUSE EARLY LEARNING IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOUNDATION FOR LATER SUCCESS.
THEN ALL ALONG THE WAY, KEEPING KIDS ON GRADE LEVEL, BUT MAKING SURE THAT OUR GRADUATION RATE CONTINUES TO IMPROVE.
IT'S THREE GOALS THAT ARE DESIGNED DIRECTLY AT THE ACADEMIC PIECE.
THEN THE REST ARE ALL VERY IMPORTANT AS WELL IN TERMS OF STAFF, IN TERMS OF OUR COMMUNITY, BUT OUR STUDENTS, AND OUR STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AND THEY'RE FEELING THAT THEY BELONG IS VERY IMPORTANT.
THANKS FOR SUGGESTING TO PUT THAT UP.
EXCELLENT. OTHER DISCUSSION OR QUESTIONS?
>> YES, SO I DO WANT TO POINT OUT THAT ONE OF THE SCOOPER GOALS HERE IS THAT BY THE CLASS OF 2026, THAT THE GRADUATION RATE RAISED TO AT LEAST 94%.
WHAT THE LAST DATA THAT HAS BEEN RELEASED WITH CLASS OF 2022, I THINK THAT HAS BEEN LIKE AROUND 85%, WAITING FOR THE THE 23 RATE TO COME OUT THIS OCTOBER.
HIGH-SCHOOL HAS A GOAL THAT THE CLASS OF 2024 HAS A GRADUATION RATE OF 95%.
[01:25:06]
THE ISSUE I SEE WITH THIS IS THAT I BELIEVE THIS IS HIGHLY UNRELATED SOLICITING AND IT MIGHT BE TOO SOON BECAUSE WE'RE GRADUATING 24 THIS YEAR AND TWO YEARS LATER WE EXPECT THAT IT GO UP TO 94.I'M NOT SURE HOW FEASIBLE THIS IS AND I'LL JUST WANT TO KNOW, SEE WHAT THERE IS, WHAT STRATEGIES THERE ARE TO MAKE SURE THAT STUDENTS ARE ENGAGED AND ARE SUCCEEDING WITHOUT NEEDING TO LOWER THE STANDARDS.
>> DO YOU WANT TO TAKE THAT, OR YOU WANT ME TO TAKE THAT.
IT'S A DISCUSSION THAT IS UNDERWAY.
WE HAVE A NUMBER OF IDEAS IN MIND THAT WE THINK CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
ONE AREA THAT I'M PARTICULARLY INTERESTED IN, IS IN BRINGING CONSISTENCY TO OUR GRADING PRACTICES.
AS IN GRADING FOR EQUITY, WHICH WE'RE ALL GOING TO BE READING.
WE'VE HAD A STUDY SESSION ON IT.
WE ARE CONCERNED THAT THERE ARE STUDENTS WHO MAY NOT BE RECEIVING CREDIT FOR COURSES, BUT NOT NECESSARILY FOR THE RIGHT REASONS, BECAUSE SOME THINGS MIGHT BE MIXED IN THAT ARE DIFFERENT FROM TEACHER TO TEACHER AND WE WANT TO BRING CONSISTENCY TO THAT.
WE'RE WORKING WITH THE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENTS AS WELL, THE CABINET AND TERMS, AND THE STUDENT LEARNING DEPARTMENT, TO MAKE SURE THAT BEST PRACTICES ARE BEING USED AT EACH HIGH SCHOOL.
WE'RE HOPING THAT THEIR DISCUSSIONS WITH STUDENTS, PARTICULARLY STUDENTS WHO ARE AT RISK AND TO IDENTIFY KIDS AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE, LIKE NINTH-GRADE WHO AREN'T ON AN EVEN BEFORE THAT BUT NINTH GRADE, IF YOU'RE NOT GETTING THE CREDITS YOU NEED AT NINTH GRADE, THOSE ARE KIDS WHO ARE MOST LIKELY NOT TO GRADUATE.
WE WILL BE HAVING STUDY SESSIONS ALL ALONG THE WAY IN TERMS OF FIGURING OUT STRATEGIES, BECAUSE I PERSONALLY DON'T THINK IT HAS TO BE EXPENSIVE PROGRAMS THAT WILL SOLVE THIS, BUT DIFFERENT WAYS THAT WE HANDLE SITUATIONS IN SCHOOLS.
>> I DO HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOU ABOUT THE EARLY LEARNING BECAUSE I THINK THAT'S WHERE YOU HAVE TO START GETTING THEM ENGAGED, BECAUSE ONCE THEY'RE OUT OF TOUCH, THAT'S WHERE THE ISSUE COMES TO PLAY IN.
I THINK IT'S BEST THAT WE GET THEM CONTINUOUSLY ENGAGED AS EARLY ON RATHER THAN FIXING IT DOWN BELOW THE LINE ONCE THEY'RE IN HIGH SCHOOL.
I DID WANT TO SAY THAT AS KEVIN MENTIONED, OUR LEWAN HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENT EQUITY TEAM DID HAVE A MEETING TODAY DURING ADVISORY TO MENTION AND TALK ABOUT THESE SUB-GOALS.
>> WE DID TALK ABOUT THESE AND CAME TO A CONSENSUS THAT OUR MAIN IDEA FOR INCREASING THE GRADUATION RATE AND GETTING THAT STUDENT CONNECTION IS HAVING THE TEACHERS AND PROVIDING A LESSON FOR THESE TEACHERS TO BUILD THAT EMOTIONAL CONNECTION WITH THE STUDENTS AND REALLY BE ABLE TO BOND WITH THESE STUDENTS AND BE ABLE TO MAKE SCHOOL FEEL AT HOME FOR THE STUDENTS.
THAT WAS OUR MAIN IDEA AND THE BIG TOPIC WE DISCUSSED TODAY BECAUSE PERSONALLY SPEAKING FROM THE MEMBERS AT THE STUDENT EQUITY MEETING, THEY FELT LIKE THE TEACHERS THAT THEY COULD FEEL AN EMOTIONAL CONNECTION WITH OR JUST GENERALLY A BOND WITH, THEY ENJOYED GOING TO CLASS OR THEY ENJOY DOING THE CLASSWORK OR THEY ENJOYED THAT PRESENCE OF BEING THERE IN THE CLASSROOM.
SO OUR MAIN TAKEAWAY OR IDEA WAS THAT INCREASING THAT TEACHER CONNECTION WITH STUDENTS AND POSSIBLY PROVIDING A LESSON OR SOME EMOTIONAL CONNECTION WITH THE STUDENTS.
>> YEAH. THANK YOU FOR TELLING ME ON WHAT WAS DISCUSSED IN THAT MORNING. I WAS AT WORK.
>> AND I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO ADD.
SO LAST YEAR I SPENT THE ENTIRE YEAR ON MY FIFTH PERIOD WORKING WITH NEW COMING UKRAINIAN STUDENTS AS A PEER MENTOR.
SO MY DUTIES WERE NOT JUST TRANSLATING, BUT GUIDING THEM THROUGH EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE.
BUT I ESSENTIALLY BECAME THEIR FRIEND OR MENTOR THAT THEY WOULD TURN TO IN ANY SCHOOL PROBLEM.
AND AN ISSUE THAT I QUICKLY REALIZED WHEN SUMMER CAME AROUND REGARDING GRADUATION, IS THAT THE STUDENTS WHO HAVE SHOWN AMAZING PROGRESS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, WHO HAVE SHOWN A LOT OF INTELLECTUAL CAPABILITIES, THAT WERE VERY BRIGHT, THEY WERE NOT BEING RECOGNIZED AND COULD NOT GRADUATE WHEN THE TIME CAME AROUND.
AND THIS WAS BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT GET THERE, ALTHOUGH THEY HAD THE TRANSCRIPTS TO PROVE FOR IT, THEY HAD THE INFORMATION BACK FROM UKRAINE, THEY COULD NOT PROVE THAT THEY HAD EXCELLED IN CERTAIN SUBJECTS AND THEY WERE GREATLY BEHIND IN SUBJECTS SUCH AS MATH AND OTHER COURSES THAT WOULD KEEP THEM FROM GRADUATING.
SO WHAT I NOTICED IS THAT THESE KIDS THAT HAD AMAZING POTENTIAL, THAT HAD A REALLY BRIGHT FUTURE AHEAD OF THEM, COULD NOT GET JOBS OR CAREERS THAT THEY WERE REALLY HOPING TO DO.
THEY WERE COMING HERE THINKING THAT THIS WOULD BE A COUNTRY OF OPPORTUNITY AND
[01:30:04]
WHAT HAPPENED WAS NOW THAT THEY FELT LIKE THEY WERE LESS THAN.AND WHAT I NOTICED IS THAT WHEN THEY WERE BEING TOLD THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GRADUATE WHEN SUMMER CAME, EFFORTS AND NOT JUST IN THAT CLASS, BUT JUST IN SCHOOL IN GENERAL, HAVE PLUMMETED BECAUSE THEY BELIEVED THAT, OKAY, WELL, IF I CAN'T GRADUATE, THEN I CAN'T DO ANYTHING.
WHAT HAPPENED WAS IN THE FIRST SEMESTER GRADES, THEY WERE OKAY.
WHEN SECOND SEMESTER GRADES CAME AROUND, THAT WAS REALLY HARD ON THEM.
AND I NOTICED THAT IT WAS STARTING TO INFLUENCE HOW THEY WERE ACTING IN OTHER CLASSES.
THEIR EFFORT IN GENERAL DROPPED BECAUSE BEING TOLD THAT YOU'RE NOT ABLE TO GRADUATE, WHICH IS LIKE AN ACCOMPLISHMENT THAT THEY WORKED FOR THEIR ENTIRE LIFE, THAT WOULD HIT THEM REALLY HARD.
AND I WANTED TO ADVOCATE FOR BETTER PROGRAMS FOR THE STUDENTS BECAUSE GRADUATION IS AN ACHIEVEMENT THAT OTHER STUDENTS, 80%. WHAT DID YOU SAY?
>> EIGHTY FIVE PERCENT. YES. WITH THE STUDENTS THAT I WORKED WITH AT MY SCHOOL, WE HAVE APPROXIMATELY, I'M NOT SURE HOW MUCH IS IT RIGHT NOW, MAYBE AROUND 35 STUDENTS.
I WOULD SAY THAT ABOUT, I DON'T WANT TO BE WRONG, BUT I WOULD SAY THAT WE HAD AT LEAST TEN PEOPLE THAT COULD NOT GRADUATE LAST YEAR AND SOME THAT WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GRADUATE WHEN THEY ARE SENIORS.
AND I WANT TO ADVOCATE FOR BETTER PROGRAMS FOR THESE STUDENTS BECAUSE THERE'S SO MUCH POTENTIAL WITH THEIR VOICES AND THEY'RE VERY SMART AND BRAVE FOR DOING WHAT THEY DO.
WE NEED BETTER SYSTEMS TO ANALYZE THEIR INTELLECT AND ANALYZE THEIR CAPABILITIES BECAUSE TRANSCRIPTS AND STUFF LIKE THAT, THEY MIGHT NOT CORRELATE BETWEEN COUNTRIES AND OVERSEAS, THEY MIGHT NOT TRANSFER OVER SO MAYBE THERE COULD BE BETTER TESTS TO ANALYZE THEIR ACADEMICS?
I DO WANT TO MENTION THAT ONE THING THAT I THINK IS IMPORTANT IS TO REMOVE THE STIGMA OF NEEDING TO BE A FIFTH YEAR SENIOR OR TAKE AN EXTRA YEAR TO GRADUATE.
THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT.
AND WHEN SOMEONE COMES FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY, I THINK ABOUT GOING TO A COUNTRY WHERE ENGLISH ISN'T THE FIRST LANGUAGE AND HAVING TO DO ACADEMICS IN THAT AND HOW DIFFICULT THAT IS.
AND IT'S OKAY WHETHER OR NOT YOU'RE AN ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER OR NOT, TO TAKE EXTRA TIME IN ORDER TO GET WHAT'S NECESSARY TO BE SUCCESSFUL.
SO I ALSO THINK, WHILE WHAT YOU'RE SAYING IS VERY IMPORTANT AND IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE PROGRAMS, SOMETIMES WHEN STUDENTS COME TO US, WHEN WE'VE ANALYZED THE GRADUATION OF STUDENTS WHO WE'VE HAD FROM KINDERGARTEN ON, WE HAVE VERY HIGH RATES.
BUT AS STUDENTS LATER AND LATER ENTER THE SYSTEM, THAT'S WHERE WE SEE LOWER AND LOWER GRADUATION RATES BECAUSE WE HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO GET THEM THE PREPARATION THAT THEY NEED NECESSARILY.
AND IF A STUDENT NEEDS EXTRA TIME, THAT SHOULD BE OKAY AND THERE SHOULD BE NO STIGMA IN TERMS OF THAT, BUT I DON'T THINK WE COMMUNICATE THAT WELL ENOUGH.
>> DIRECTOR JAY ADAMS, I GUESS I WOULD LOOK AT THE OTHER SIDE OF IT.
DO WE HAVE MECHANISMS WITH OUR MASTERY-BASED POLICIES THAT WE HAVE PUT INTO PLACE THAT MIGHT BE HELPFUL IN THESE CASES? I DON'T KNOW IF THESE ARE MECHANISMS. THIS IS A OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO DEMONSTRATE THEIR MASTERY OF SUBJECTS AND THERE'S A NUMBER OF OPTIONS IN THESE POLICIES.
SO THAT MIGHT BE A WAY TO HELP THESE STUDENTS AND HOPEFULLY THAT'S SOMETHING WE'RE ALREADY DOING.
>> THIS IS A GREAT DISCUSSION.
IT IS SO WONDERFUL TO HAVE STUDENTS VOICES BACK.
HOW INTERESTING THAT OUR GOALS HAVE KICKED THIS OUT.
GRADUATION RATE IS PROBABLY NUMBER ONE PRIORITY AND WHEN YOU SAY YOU THINK IT'S AN UNREALISTIC GOAL, THROUGHOUT MY CAREER, I'VE ALWAYS SOUGHT GOALS THAT I WOULD CALL DIFFICULT BUT DOABLE.
I WANT TO HAVE AMBITIOUS GOALS.
WE MIGHT NOT MAKE IT BUT LET'S SEE, LET'S WORK TOWARD IT, LET'S HAVE HIGH EXPECTATIONS AND PUSH OURSELVES.
WE DIDN'T SAY 100%, ALTHOUGH I'D LIKE TO HAVE 100%.
THAT'S ANOTHER WAY TO THINK ABOUT THAT, I APPRECIATE YOUR COMMENTS.
>> I JUST WANT TO MENTION ONE THING THAT MOST PEOPLE PROBABLY ARE NOT REALLY AWARE OF.
THE WAY THEY FIGURED GRADUATION RATES IS THEY, YOU LIST ALL THE STUDENTS YOU HAVE IN NINTH GRADE AND FOUR YEARS LATER, YOU COUNT HOW MANY OF THOSE STUDENTS WENT ACROSS THE PODIUM.
AND SO IT'S BASED UPON A NINTH GRADE COHORT.
HOW MANY GRADUATE IN 12TH GRADE.
AND SO ONE OF THE PROBLEMS IN GRADUATION RATES IS SOME STUDENTS DISAPPEAR,
[01:35:05]
THEY STOP COMING TO SCHOOL.IT MAY BE BECAUSE THEY MOVED TO ANOTHER STATE OR ANOTHER SCHOOL DISTRICT OR MAYBE THEY'VE MOVED TO A DIFFERENT COUNTRY.
OFTENTIMES WE DON'T KNOW BUT ANY KID THAT MOVES OUT OF OUR DISTRICT THAT WE DON'T KNOW WHERE THEY GO, THEY ACCOUNT IT IS A NON GRADUATE.
AND SO THAT'S ACTUALLY A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF STUDENTS BY THE TIME ALL THE NINTH GRADERS GET TO 12TH GRADE, THERE'S MANY KIDS THAT ARE NO LONGER IN OUR DISTRICT.
AND IF WE FIND OUT THEY'RE REGISTERED IN ANOTHER SCHOOL, THEN THEY GET ON THAT SCHOOLS COUNT BUT IF WE CAN'T FIND THAT OUT, THEY STAY ON OUR ACCOUNT.
ONE OF THE THINGS WE'VE DONE IS WE'VE HIRED AN OUTSIDE COMPANY THAT SPECIALIZES IN TRACKING DOWN THE KIDS, FINDING WHERE THEY WENT AND ALSO THE OTHER PART OF THEIR SERVICE IS THEY'RE TRAINED TO RE-ENGAGE KIDS, GET THEM BACK INTO THE EDUCATION SYSTEM IN OUR DISTRICT OR THROUGH A PROGRAM THEY HAVE.
SO THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS WE'RE DOING TO TRY TO IMPROVE THAT RATE.
BUT WHEN THE STUFFING, PREVENTING DROPOUTS OR IF KIDS DO DROPOUT, FIGURING OUT WHY THEY DID IT AND WHERE THEY WENT IS A REALLY DIFFICULT ISSUE AND IT CONTRIBUTES TO OUR GRADUATION RATE.
>> GOOD DISCUSSION. ANYTHING ELSE? OKAY. I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE IN A SECOND AND SOME VERY GOOD DISCUSSION.
I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE. DIRECTOR SMITH?
>> AYE. AND THE SCHOOL BOARD GOALS ARE APPROVED FOR THE COMING YEAR.
>> SECOND ITEM OF NEW BUSINESSES, A SINGLE READING TO APPROVE RESOLUTION 23, 19.
THIS ENABLES NEWLY ELECTED BOARD MEMBERS TO ATTEND THE WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE.
BECAUSE SCHOOL DIRECTORS ARE ELECTED BEFORE, BUT TAKE THE OATH OF OFFICE AFTER THE CONFERENCE.
THIS ENABLES US TO ALLOW THEM, DESPITE THE FACT THAT THEY AREN'T EMPLOYEES OR BOARD MEMBERS YET TO ATTEND THE CONFERENCE, SHOULD THEY SO CHOOSE.
>> DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE IN A SECOND?
>> IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE, I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.
>> RESOLUTION 23-19 IS APPROVED.
ARE THERE ANY ADDITIONAL NOPE.
NEXT WE HAVE LEGISLATIVE UPDATE.
[18. LEGISLATIVE UPDATES]
>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH. EXCUSE ME.
IT'S CARIN CHASE, LEGISLATIVE REPRESENTATIVE FOR THE BOARD.
IN CASE WE HAD TO LET OUR STUDENTS KNOW THAT I'M THE LEGISLATIVE REP TO THE SCHOOL BOARD, AND I WAS VERY HAPPY TO ATTEND THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY THIS LAST WEEKEND, WHICH IS THE SCHOOL DIRECTORS A CROSS THE STATE, CHOOSING TO EVALUATE AND ADOPT, OR NOT 49 LEGISLATIVE PROPOSALS IN BYLAW AMENDMENT TO THE WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL DIRECTORS LEGISLATIVE POLICIES.
WE TOOK THE FULL WEEKEND ALL DAY FRIDAY, ALL DAY SATURDAY.
THE THREE OF US, DIRECTOR KILLGORE, DIRECTOR KATIMS, WE TRADED OFF SO THAT NONE OF US HAD TO BE THERE THE ENTIRE TIME AND WE PARTICIPATED VIRTUALLY.
FROM THAT THE THE BYLAW AMENDMENT THAT WE DID DISCUSS WAS ADOPTED.
THAT CHANGE SOME OF THE PROCESS BY WHICH WE VOTED, AND WE DID GET THROUGH 49 LEGISLATIVE PROPOSALS THAT WERE EITHER ADOPTED OR NOT.
THE STAFF HAS UPDATED THE LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES FOR WASHINGTON AND NOW OUR NEXT JOB IS TO PRIORITIZE OUR TOP 10 FOR OUR DISTRICT.
OF THE NEWLY ADOPTED PROPOSALS, AND WE'LL GET A FULL DEBRIEF ON ALL OF THE PROPOSALS AND THE DISCUSSION WHICH WILL BE SENDING OUT SOON.
BUT RIGHT NOW WE HAVE THE UPDATED POLICY POSITIONS.
THERE ARE 123 OF THEM, AND WE GET TO CHOOSE OUR TOP 10 FOR THE DISTRICT.
NOW, OF THOSE 123, THERE ARE 45 THAT DO DEAL WITH FUNDING AND FUNDING ALLOCATION.
OF THOSE, I WOULD SUGGEST, I BELIEVE I SENT THIS LIST TO EVERYONE, BUT I'LL SEE IF WE CAN GET IT IN A SOME A SPREADSHEET SO IT'S A LITTLE BIT EASIER TO ACCESS.
THERE ARE A FEW, I'M JUST GOING TO POINT OUT ON,
[01:40:03]
LET'S SEE, EQUITABLE SCHOOL FUNDING THAT I THINK MIGHT BE OF INTEREST TO OUR DISTRICT.BUDGET STABILITY, ENHANCED FUNDING FOR TRANSITIONAL BILINGUAL EDUCATION, AMPLY FUNDED STAFFING LEVELS, AMPLY FUNDING FOR HIGH POVERTY SCHOOLS, ALLOWING SUBMISSION OF A TWO YEAR BUDGET.
AS I SCAN LOOKING AT THOSE THAT WE MAY BE INTERESTED IN, THIS HAS TO BE PUT IN BY I THINK IT IS OCTOBER 16TH.
WE HAVE SOME TIME TO TAKE A LOOK AT THIS, SHARE IT WITH OUR STUDENT REPS TO ITS MEETINGS STUFF, BUT THERE'S GOOD LINKS THAT YOU CAN GO TO SEE WHAT WE FEEL ARE PRIORITIES FOR OUR DISTRICT.
THEN IT WILL BE COMPILED AND THE TOP 10 LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES WILL BE WHAT WAS TO FOCUSES ON DURING THIS NEXT LEGISLATIVE SESSION.
THIS NEXT LEGISLATIVE SESSION IS A SHORT ONE, AND SO WE'RE BEING REMINDED TO MANAGE OUR EXPECTATIONS BECAUSE OFTEN IN THESE SHORTER LEGISLATIVE SESSIONS, NOT A LOT OF NEW BUSINESS HAPPENS.
IT DOES HAPPEN, BUT THERE'S A LOT OF CLEANUP AND IT'S SHORT.
BUT TO THAT END, WE HAVE BEEN MEETING WITH OUR LEGISLATORS AND SCHEDULING MEETINGS IN OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER TO SHARE WITH THEM WHAT OUR PRIORITIES ARE.
IT'D BE VERY TIMELY FOR US TO DO OUR PRIORITIES AT THEM.
I BELIEVE OCTOBER 10TH MEETING IS WHEN, IF I HAVE READ MY CALENDAR RIGHT, OCTOBER 10TH WE CAN HAVE THIS JUST TO VOTE ON THEM, OR IN THE PAST WE HAVE JUST HAD A CONVERSATION DURING THE LEDGE REP DISCUSSION.
WHICHEVER WAY WE WANT TO HANDLE THAT, WHICHEVER WAY IS APPROPRIATE.
>> BUT THAT IS SOMETHING WE NEED TO VOTE ON, SO IT NEEDS TO BE AN AGENDA ITEM. I MEAN, WE CAN MAKE IT.
>> LET'S MAKE IT AN AGENDA ITEM.
>> WE WILL MAKE IT AN AGENDA ITEM SO THAT WE CAN VOTE ON IT.
BECAUSE LAST TIME I THINK WE DID A RANKING.
ANYWAY, IF WE HAVE IT AS AN AGENDA ITEM, WE HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO THEN DO A REGULAR VOTING [OVERLAPPING].
>> LET'S MAKE THAT AN AGENDA ITEM AND I'LL MAKE SURE SINCE WE HAVE NEW STUDENT BOARD WHILE WORK WITH AARON TO MAKE SURE WE CAN GET THIS LEGISLATIVE PRIORITY EMAIL.
IT JUST CAME OUT TODAY, ON THE POSITIONS AND THE POSITION CATALOG.
THAT'S AS FAR AS I WAS GOING TO GO RIGHT NOW ON THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY, OR THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, UNLESS YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE SOME OF YOUR EXPERIENCES.
>> WELL, SINCE WE HAD TALKED ABOUT THIS AT THE LAST MEETING, I THINK WE SHOULD PROBABLY BRING IT UP SINCE FIVE HOURS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY WAS SPENT ON THIS ONE PARTICULAR BYLAW.
WE HAD TALKED ABOUT THE FACT, AND I DON'T KNOW IF DIRECTOR NOBLE AND DIRECTOR SMITH YET KNOW THIS.
BUT WE HAD TALKED ABOUT THE FACT THAT UP UNTIL NOW THROUGH HAS BEEN THE OPTION OF WHAT'S CALLED A WEIGHTED VOTE SO THAT LARGER DISTRICTS, WE HAVE MANY, MANY, MANY TINY LITTLE DISTRICTS IN WASHINGTON STATE, LESS THAN 1,000 KIDS, AND WE HAVE ABOUT 15 MIDDLE TO LARGE DISTRICTS AT THAT.
DID YOU SAY THAT THAT'S ABOUT?
>> SINCE MIDDLE TO LARGE DISTRICTS REPRESENT A HUGE PROPORTION OF STUDENTS IN THE STATE, THERE HAS BEEN THIS WEIGHTED VOTE SO THE BOARD MEMBERS WHO WERE THERE CAN CALL FOR A WEIGHTED VOTE, AND THEN THE LARGER DISTRICTS MIGHT HAVE EIGHT VOTES TO A SMALL DISTRICTS, ONE VOTE.
THAT WAS A BYLAW, AND THERE WAS FIVE HOURS SPENT AT THE CONFERENCE GOING THROUGH AMENDMENT AFTER AMENDMENT.
BUT IT WASN'T ALLOWED TO HAVE A WEIGHTED VOTE.
IN FACT, THAT WAS CHANGED AND THEY REMOVED THE WEIGHTED VOTE.
THOSE OF YOU WHO'VE TAKEN GOVERNMENT, THINK ABOUT THIS AS THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE.
WHEN WE ELECT THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, IT'S NOT BY POPULAR VOTE, IS IT? IT'S BY NUMBER OF STATES.
A STATE AS SMALL AS DELAWARE, OR RHODE ISLAND, GETS THE SAME NUMBER, OR EQUIVALENT KIND AS THE VERY LARGE STATES.
THERE'S A LOT OF DISCUSSION AMONG THE LARGE DISTRICTS AS TO WHETHER, OR NOT OR THE EXTENT TO WHICH WAS TO WILL CONTINUE TO REFLECT THE NEEDS OF LARGE DISTRICTS.
WE WILL SIMPLY SEE HOW IT GOES, AND IF NECESSARY, THERE WOULD BE SUCH A THING AS A LARGE DISTRICT CAUCUS.
WHEN WE WANT TO ADVOCATE FOR WHAT'S IMPORTANT FOR LARGE DISTRICTS,
[01:45:01]
WE MIGHT USE A CAUCUS, OR A BLOCK LIKE THAT TO BRING MORE POWER TO OUR DISCUSSIONS WITH LEGISLATORS WERE VERY EARLY TO THIS, BUT THERE WAS A LOT OF DISAPPOINTMENT [LAUGHTER] ON THE MEDIUM AND LARGE DISTRICTS THAT NOW AT DISTRICT OF OUR SIZE THAT REPRESENTS MORE THAN 19,000 STUDENTS WOULD GET THE SAME VOTE FOR PARTICULAR WASN'T A POLICY, FOR EXAMPLE, DISTRICT THAT HAS ONE SCHOOL.>> I THINK THAT'S A VERY GOOD SUMMARY.
IT WAS FIVE HOURS ON THIS ONE PARTICULAR SUBJECTS, SO YOU CAN SEE THAT THERE WILL BE A LOT OF DEBRIEFING AND DISCUSSION ON THIS.
I'M PARTICULARLY POINTED OUT THAT OUR DISTRICT WITH OVER 19,000 STUDENTS IS MAJORITY STUDENTS OF COLOR.
I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT NONE OF THESE VOICES ARE MARGINALIZED WHEN MAKING POLICY DECISIONS.
IT'S SOMETHING FOR US TO KEEP PAYING ATTENTION TO.
>> DEBORAH, DID YOU WANT TO ADD ANYTHING?
>> OH, JUST THAT IT WAS ACTUALLY VERY INTERESTING THIS TIME AROUND.
I THOUGHT WE MADE A REALLY GOOD TAG TEAM.
MOSTLY I JUST MADE IT A POINT TO REPRESENT MY BOARD BECAUSE WE HAD DISCUSSED HOW WE FELT AS A BOARD.
IT'S ALWAYS IMPORTANT TO REMIND OURSELVES AND EACH OTHER THAT NONE OF US MAKES DECISIONS ON OUR OWN.
I DON'T REMEMBER, BUT THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN THIS ONE TIME WHERE I WAS LIKE, OH, MAN, I'D PROBABLY LOOK THIS WAY.
BUT NO, MY BOARD AS A WHOLE WOULD VOTE THAT WAY AND THAT'S THE WAY THAT I'M GOING TO DO IT.
>> [LAUGHTER] YOU'RE WELCOME. [LAUGHTER] IT WASN'T ANY BIG DEAL FOR SURE.
>> DIRECTOR CARIN, THANK YOU FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP ON ALL THAT.
>> THANK YOU. WELL, I ALSO REALLY APPRECIATED WAS DOING THIS HYBRID IN-PERSON PLATFORM THEY USED.
AS WE CONTINUE DOING THIS, I THINK THAT IT'S MUCH MORE ENGAGEMENT AND MANY MORE FOLKS WERE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS.
WE DO HAVE A COUPLE OF THINGS.
WE ALSO HAVE, WHAT'S IN NOVEMBER, OUR ANNUAL ASSEMBLY IN NOVEMBER 14TH?
>> THEY ARE ANNUAL CONFERENCE.
>> ANNUAL CONFERENCE THAT'S COMING UP THAT WE JUST VOTED ON.
>> FIFTEENTH TO SIXTEENTH [OVERLAPPING].
>> JUST REMEMBER TO PUT THAT TOGETHER IN OUR CALENDAR.
THEN ALSO JUST ON A LITTLE ASIDE, WE HAVE A FEDERAL RELATIONS NETWORK THAT WE GET FEDERAL UPDATES, AND THERE WAS ONLY TWO THINGS.
FIRST, I'LL TELL YOU THAT, I JUST GOT A NOTE THAT THE USDA PUBLISHED A FINAL RULE CHANGE THAT MOVES THE COMMUNITY ELIGIBILITY THRESHOLD FOR FREE AND REDUCED LUNCHES FROM 40 TO 25%.
THIS WILL RESULT IN OVER 100,000 WASHINGTON STUDENTS NOW RECEIVING FREE BREAKFAST AND LUNCH, AND MOVE US EVEN CLOSER TO ACHIEVING FREE FOOD FOR ALL AND SOME OF THE WASA GOALS SO THAT WAS REALLY GOOD NEWS THAT CAME TODAY.
THEN ALSO IN THE FEDERAL UPDATES AT ONE THAT WE HAD, I THINK A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, THERE WAS A SOME LABS AT THE GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY TALKING ABOUT DISTRICT FINANCES POST S THAT THEY'RE DOING A FORUM AND SOME CLASSES ON SOME A FOUR-PART VIRTUAL WORKSHOP, AND THERE WERE SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE.
I WAS AWARDED A SCHOLARSHIP TO THE GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY FINANCE, THAT'S WHERE THEY CALL IT DISTRICT FINANCES POST SA CONFERENCE, SO THAT'S GOING TO BE STARTING IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS.
I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO IT AND SEE WHAT THE CONVERSATION IS.
>> DO YOU GET TO GO TO DC FOR THAT?
>> IT'S ALL VIRTUAL. OH, YEAH. [LAUGHTER].
>> I'M NOT SURE THEY WOULD HAVE GIVEN ME THE FULL SCHOLARSHIP AND PLANE FLIGHT YET.
>> BUT HOPEFULLY YOU'LL SHARE WHAT YOU LEARNED WITH US.
>> ABSOLUTELY, YEAH, THEY ALREADY SENT ME THE PACKET AND IT STARTS ON THURSDAY.
IT'S CALLED THE WORLD LIGHT AHEAD.
>> EXCELLENT. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
>> THAT'S IT, LET'S KEEP THE GOVERNMENT GOING.
BUT THAT'S A WHOLE DIFFERENT SUBJECT, SO YES.
>> NEXT AGENDA ITEM IS BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS,
[19. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS]
AND THIS IS WHERE WE EACH SAY WHATEVER IS HAPPENING, OR PARTICULARLY OF INTERESTS THAT WE THINK WE WANT TO SHARE, AND WE WILL START WITH THE STUDENTS.YOU GUYS CAN MAKE A COMMENT OR YOU CAN PASS EACH MEETING, IT'S REALLY UP TO YOU.
I'M GOING TO START WITH KEVIN BECAUSE HE'S SITTING OVER HERE.
>> THANK YOU DR. KIM'S I DID WANT TO COMMENT BACK ON THE ROBOTICS PRESENTATION WHO HAVE LEFT EARLIER.
I'M NOT SURE ABOUT THAT MOUNTAIN LIKE TERRORISTS, BUT AT LITTLEWOOD, IT'S NEARLY NOT AS TALKED ABOUT AS TSA OR DECA.
[01:50:01]
I THINK A FIRST ROBOTICS IS SOMETHING THAT MORE PEOPLE SHOULD REALLY KNOW ABOUT, AND THE FACT THAT HOW UNNOTICED THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS GO IS SOMETHING THAT I THINK THEY SHOULD RECEIVE MORE RECOGNITION FOR THAT.I THINK I WANTED TO RECITE WHAT THEIR VICE PRESIDENT ADMINISTRATION SAID, KEVIN.
ABOUT THE PRACTICE FIELD THOUGH, I DID SEE THE MANY WRITTEN COMMENTS AND ALSO THE WRITTEN COMMENTS FROM THE CANCELED JUNE 12TH MEETING, THE RESCHEDULED JUNE 12TH FOR MEETING.
I THINK THAT CYNTHIA'S IDEA OF HAVING A DEDICATED STEM FIELD IN THE DISTRICT IS SOMETHING I'VE NEVER HEARD OF IT, BUT IT'LL BE LIKE THE FIRST IN THE NATION IF WE DID HAVE ONE AND I'LL LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING HOW THAT WOULD TURN OUT.
AMIN, WOULD YOU LIKE TO MAKE A COMMENT? NEXT AMAYA, AM I SAYING YOUR NAME RIGHT?
>> AM I ALLOWED TO RESPOND TO THE COMMENTS THAT WERE SAID EARLIER?
>> I HAD A QUESTION ABOUT THE FIRST PERSON THAT SPOKE, I BELIEVE IT WAS YOU THAT TALKED ABOUT A GURU AND BROUGHT UP AN ARTICLE.
I WANTED TO ASK, HOW DOES THAT RELATE TO THE EDMOND SCHOOL DISTRICT?
>> NO. I THINK THOUGH THAT THE POINT IS WE WOULD LIKE ALL OF OUR PEOPLE WHO MAKE PUBLIC COMMENTS, AND I THINK THE POINT BEING MADE HERE IS THAT ANY COMMENTS SHOULD RELATE DIRECTLY TO THE WORK GOING ON IN THE DISTRICT? [BACKGROUND] YES, BUT IT WASN'T ABOUT ANYTHING IN OUR DISTRICT.
IT WAS ABOUT A SPECIFIC STORY THAT WENT ON THAT AND THERE ARE CASES EVERYWHERE.
IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH OUR SEL CURRICULUM.
I DON'T THINK YOU'VE LOOKED AT OUR SEL CURRICULUM TO KNOW IT.
I WOULD ALSO ASK AND I'M GOING TO ADD IT THAT I THINK AND I'M JUST PIGGYBACKING ON THIS, I THINK IT'S INAPPROPRIATE TO MAKE PUBLIC COMMENTS THAT HAVE GRAPHICS SEXUAL LANGUAGE IN THEM.
WE HAVE STUDENTS WHO LISTENED TO THIS, THIS IS A PUBLIC FORUM.
WE HAVE PARENTS AND STUDENTS WHO LISTENED TO OUR BOARD MEETINGS TOGETHER, IT'S UNNECESSARY TO MAKE POINTS USING SUCH GRAPHIC AND UNNECESSARY LANGUAGE.
BUT I THINK YOUR POINT IS PARTICULARLY WELL-TAKEN THAT IT WASN'T RELATED TO OUR SITUATION.
IT WASN'T ONE OF OUR STAFF MEMBERS, IT'S NOT EVEN IN OUR STATE, IT'S NOT OUR SEL CURRICULUM AND NO, WE DON'T NEED TO HEAR A RESPONSE.
ANYWAY, WAS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANTED TO ASK.
>> ALSO THE COMMENTS OF TRANSGENDER STUDENTS.
I BELIEVE, I'M SORRY, I DON'T KNOW EVERYONE'S NAME.
I BELIEVE IT WAS YOU WHO MADE THE COMMENT OF YOUR NINE-YEAR-OLD GRANDDAUGHTER ASKING ABOUT TRANSGENDER STUDENTS AND YOU MADE IT SEEM AS IF YOUR GRANDDAUGHTER WAS TARGETED FOR ASKING ABOUT TRANSGENDER STUDENTS.
YET YOU DID NOT PROVIDE AN EXAMPLE OF YOUR GRANDDAUGHTER FACING ANY BACKLASH FOR THOSE QUESTIONS.
YOUR POINT WAS A LITTLE CONFUSING.
ALSO, I WANTED TO BRING UP THE COLLECTIVE IDEA THAT I HEARD WAS PUSHING AN AGENDA.
BEING IN THE EDMOND SCHOOL DISTRICT I HAVE NOT SEEN THIS AGENDA THAT YOU KEEP BRINGING UP, AND YOU MAKE IT SEEM AS IF WE ARE FORCING OUR STUDENTS TO BE TRANSGENDER THAT IS NOT THE CASE.
TRANSGENDER STUDENTS ARE COMING TO THIS REALIZATION ON THEIR OWN AND THE RESPONSE TO PUTTING, THE 10 COMMANDMENTS UP IN THE SCHOOL AND BRINGING FORTH THE MESSAGE OF GOD IS FRANKLY HYPOCRITICAL BECAUSE YOU ARE MAD THAT SOMEONE ELSE IS PUSHING THE AGENDA, BUT YOU ARE FORCING YOUR RELIGION ONTO OTHERS SO THAT IS ALL I HAVE TO SAY.
>> YES. MY MAIN TOPIC OR THING I WANTED TO DISCUSS WAS OFF OF KEVIN STEM AND CTE EDUCATIONS.
THIS IS PERSONALLY REALLY IMPORTANT TO ME BECAUSE I AM
[01:55:01]
A WASHINGTON TECHNOLOGY STUDENT ASSOCIATION STATE OFFICER.I LOVE PUSHING THE EDUCATION OF STEM IS SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE OF TSA.
BUT AT THE SAME TIME, THERE ARE MANY OTHER CISOS AND THE DISTRICT SUCH AS DECA OR FCA LA OR AT UCLA, PLA.
I REALLY WANTED TO PUSH THIS IDEA OF PROMOTING THESE AMONG THE SCHOOL DISTRICT BECAUSE I DON'T LIKE TERRACE HIGH HAS A VERY STRONG TSA PROGRAM AND MIA LIN, WHAT I'M TRYING TO GET THIS PROGRAM STARTED OR VERY PUSHED AND OR IMPORTANT IN OR MAKE IT IMPORTANT IN MY SCHOOL PERSONALLY.
MY MAIN IDEAS, I REALLY WANTED TO GET THIS IDEA OF CTE AND CTS EDUCATION AND REALLY PUSH IT'S IMPORTANCE AMONG ALL OF OUR DISTRICT SCHOOLS.
BECAUSE AS FAR AS I KNOW, METAL DELL DOES NOT HAVE A TSA CHAPTER, BUT THOUGH THEY DO HAVE A DECA CHAPTER OR A PLA CHAPTER OR OTHER CTS L CURRICULUMS SO I WANTED TO MAKE WHETHER THIS IS IN A FLYER OR GENERALLY SPEAKING, INFORMATION PUSHED OUT TO TEACHERS TO GET INVOLVED AND GET US INVOLVEMENT RIGHT NOT ONLY IN CERTAIN SCHOOLS, BUT EVERY SINGLE SCHOOL IN THE DISTRICT SO WE CAN SEE STUDENTS FROM EACH SCHOOL SHY IN THESE CATEGORIES, WHETHER IT BE STEM OR BUSINESS, OR HOUSE OR HEALTH CARE OR STUFF LIKE THAT.
>> GREAT. THANK YOU. VICTORIA.
>> I HAVEN'T INTRODUCED MYSELF YET.
I'M A JUNIOR AT MOTLEY TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL.
FIRST OFF, I TOTALLY AGREE WITH EVERYTHING ON MY HEAD SAID, I HAVE WATCHED THESE BOARDROOMS IN THE PAST, I THINK IT'S VERY UNFORTUNATE THAT AS YOU SAID, STUDENTS WATCHING THIS WITH THEIR PARENTS HAVE TO HEAR THIS NEGATIVE STUFF BUT I REALLY APPRECIATE THE BOARDS RESPONSE TO THIS AND SHOWING THAT WE DO CARE ABOUT ALL THE STUDENTS IN THE DISTRICT AND JUST WANTED TO THANK YOU, GUYS.
>> ADDING ON TO THE WHOLE CTE CONVERSATION, I DO THINK THAT BUSINESS EDUCATION IS VERY IMPORTANT AND NOT JUST BUSINESS, BUT JUST SPECIALIZED CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES.
I THINK THAT IT IS VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE I'M NOTICING A BIG SURGE OF PEOPLE LIKE THIS GENERATION THAT MAYBE YOU'RE NOT REALLY SURE WHAT THEY WANT TO DO THAT DON'T REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT MIGHT NOT HAVE A BRIGHT SENSE OF THE FUTURE.
I KNOW I'VE BEEN CALLED THE CRAZY BEFORE FOR PLANNING, SO AHEAD AND EVERYTHING.
I DO WANT TO ADVOCATE FOR MAYBE MORE SPECIALIZED CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES WITHIN THE SCHOOLS AND JUST MAKING SURE THAT PEOPLE ARE AWARE THAT THESE THINGS ARE AVAILABLE TO THEM.
BECAUSE WHAT I'VE NOTICED IN MY HIGH SCHOOL AND IN SCHOOLS IN GENERAL IS THAT YOU'VE GO THIS 10% THAT GET INVOLVED AND THEY GET INVOLVED EVERYWHERE.
BUT THEN THE REST OF THE SCHOOL MIGHT NOT EVEN BE AWARE THAT THESE OPPORTUNITIES ARE WAITING FOR THEM.
YOU'VE GOT PEOPLE WHO WANT TO BE FUTURE MECHANICS, BUT THEY DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE AUTO SHOP PROGRAM.
YOU'VE GOT PEOPLE WHO WANT TO BE FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS, BUT THEY MIGHT NOT BE INVOLVED IN DECA.
THESE ARE JUST THINGS I DON'T THINK IT IS BECAUSE OF A LACK OF INTERESTS, BUT I DO BELIEVE IT IS BECAUSE OF A LACK OF AWARENESS.
THERE'S JUST NOT ENOUGH REALLY REPRESENTATIONS OF THESE THINGS AND WE DO NOT HAVE A TSA CHAPTER.
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I'M HEARING IF TSA, BUT WE DO HAVE DECA AND DECA IS GROWING, BUT I WILL SAY THAT WE ARE STILL SEVERELY UNDERDEVELOPED COMPARED TO OTHER SCHOOLS AND OTHER DISTRICTS AS WELL.
I KNOW THAT OTHER SCHOOLS HAVE IT AS A CLASS.
FOR US, IT IS A CLUB AND IN FACT, IT IS HARD TO GET PEOPLE INVOLVED IN DECA.
IT IS BEEN A REALLY BIG CHALLENGE THAT ME AND THE ADVISOR HAVE FACED IN THE SENSE THAT THERE ARE JUST SIMPLY NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE THAT KNOW ABOUT IT AND THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT.
I WOULD APPRECIATE SOME MORE MAYBE INFORMATIVE INFORMATION BEING SENT OUT TO STUDENTS ABOUT CERTAIN THINGS THAT THEIR SCHOOL HAS TO OFFER. THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU. UNDERSTAND THAT WE HAVE STAFF IN THE BACK WHO WORKED DIRECTLY WITH OUR PRINCIPALS, SO I KNOW THAT THEY ARE PROBABLY TAKING NOTES ON ALL OF THE GOOD INFORMATION AND IDEAS THAT YOU ALL HAVE TO SHARE WHEN THEY MEET WITH THEIR ADMINISTRATORS THAT THEY WORK WITH.
IT GOES BEYOND THIS GROUP AND HOPEFULLY GETS INTO THE OPERATIONAL PIECES. THANK YOU.
DIRECTOR SMITH, DO YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS YOU WANT TO MAKE?
>> YEAH. A COUPLE OF QUICK THINGS I WANT TO [OVERLAPPING]
>> WAIT. I'M SORRY, I THOUGHT YOU HAD PASSED.
BUT IF YOU WANT TO MAKE A STATEMENT, GO AHEAD.
>> I'M JUST GOING TO ADD ONTO WHAT THEY SAID AND I TOTALLY AGREE WITH THE PROGRAMS AROUND SCHOOL AND I KNOW THAT THAT'S HARD RIGHT NOW BECAUSE OF TEACHERS AND BUDGETING.
I UNDERSTAND BECAUSE I'M AN ASP BUT MAYBE ADDING AP, MICROECONOMICS, AND MACROECONOMICS THERE'S A LOT OF CLASSES THAT'S AT SOME SCHOOLS,
[02:00:01]
I THINK [INAUDIBLE] OFFERS, BUT NOT A LOT FOR OTHER SCHOOLS IN OUR DISTRICT.I THINK IF WE OPEN THAT UP, IT WOULD BE REALLY GREAT. THAT'S IT.
>> I STILL WANT TO ADD ON WHAT EVERYBODY IS TALKING ABOUT CTE.
A LOT OF CTE COURSES HAVE EQUIVALENCY CREDIT WHERE, FOR EXAMPLE, LIKE INTRO TO ENGINEERING DESIGN.
NOT ONLY CAN YOU EARN 1.0 CREDITS OF CTE, YOU CAN ALSO EARN ANOTHER 1.0 CREDITS IN ARTS.
SINCE THERE IS A LOT OF CLASSES THAT CAN FULFILL LIKE ENGLISH, SOCIAL STUDIES, THIRD-YEAR MATH, OR MAYBE EVEN SNOW AISLES TECH SKILLS CENTER CAN ALSO SATISFY SOME OF THE CORE REQUIREMENTS, ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE WHO AREN'T PARTICULARLY COLLEGE BOUND.
I THINK WE NEED TO INCREASE THE KNOWLEDGE AND AWARENESS THAT THESE ARE OPTIONS THAT THEY CAN ALSO TAKE ON.
>> THE FIRST THING I JUST WANTED TO MENTION WAS ABOUT THE ROBOTICS DEPARTMENT.
I THINK THAT'S A GREAT PROGRAM THAT WE HAVE GOING ON, A GREAT CLUB THERE.
I REMEMBER THAT WHEN I WAS A HIGH SCHOOL AGE, WE WERE JUST STARTING TO SEE SOME OF THAT STUFF GO MAINSTREAM LIKE ON TV AND WHATNOT WHERE YOU WOULD SEE PEOPLE BUILDING ROBOTS AND WHATNOT AND I ALWAYS THOUGHT TO MYSELF, THERE'S NO WAY I COULD DO THAT, THESE PEOPLE ARE GENIUSES.
NOW THAT WE HAVE IN OUR SCHOOLS I THINK IT'S A REALLY COOL PROGRAM.
IT SOUNDS LIKE, AND I WAS UNAWARE OF THIS, BUT THEY WERE USING ALL THE WOOD METAL AS A PRACTICE AREA AND NOW WITH THE ROOF SITUATION THAT THEY'RE HAVING TO SCRAMBLE A LITTLE.
I TRUST THAT THE DISTRICT IS FIGHTING THEM PLACES TO BE.
I KNOW THAT WE HAVE SPOKEN ABOUT WHAT THE FUTURE OF ALDERWOOD MIDDLE LOOKS LIKE.
I KNOW IT DOESN'T FEEL GOOD FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE BEING MOVED FROM WHERE THEY'RE USED TO BEING TO SOMEWHERE ELSE TO BE MOVED.
BUT HONESTLY, WE HAVE AS A DISTRICT A LOT OF PLANS THERE FOR THAT, ALDERWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL SITE THAT ARE GOING TO MAKE THE DISTRICT A LOT BETTER OVERALL.
I JUST REALLY HOPE THAT WE'RE ABLE TO PUT THAT ROBOTICS DEPARTMENT UP AT A PLACE THAT GIVES THEM THE SPACE THEY NEED AND THE RESOURCES THEY NEED WHILE WE ALSO IMPROVE OUR DISTRICT.
THEN THE ONE LAST THING I WANTED TO MENTION WAS THAT I WILL START WITH I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT'S LIKE TO WALK IN THE SHOES OF AN INDIVIDUAL WHO IS LGBTQ.
WHAT DOES EVERYDAY LIFE FOR THEM? I DON'T KNOW.
I'M STRAIGHT WHITE MAN, I KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE FOR ME AND IT'S PRETTY EASY.
IN TWO WEEKENDS AT MAGNUSSON PARK, THERE IS THE LARGEST, AND I WILL BE THERE, THE LARGEST GATHERING OF LET'S JUST CALL THEM DON STRAIGHT ATHLETES AS THERE'S A LARGE FLIGHT FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT THERE.
IF YOU'RE AN INDIVIDUAL WHO JUST WANTS TO GO AND BE A PART OF THAT, PERHAPS YOU'RE PART OF THE COMMUNITY AND YOU JUST WANT TO BE SOMEWHERE WHERE IT'S GOING TO BE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO ARE VERY ACCEPTING AND THAT MAKES YOU FEEL A BIT MORE AT HOME, NOTE THIS COMING WEEK AND THE FOLLOWING WEEKEND AT MAGNUSSON PARK, ALL SKILL LEVELS, YOU COULD JUST COME OUT AND WATCH A GAME THAT NO CHARGE TO GET AND EVERYTHING.
IT'S PEOPLE WHO'VE JUST PICKED UP A BALL, WANT TO PLAY ALL THE WAY UP TO, I KNOW THERE'S AT LEAST ONE PERSON OUT THERE THAT HAD AN NFL TRYOUT AT ONE POINT IN THEIR LIFE.
IT IS REALLY ALL LEVELS OF SKILL THAT GO OUT AND PLAY AND IT'S A GREAT TIME, THREE DAYS, FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY.
IF LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO DO IN TWO WEEKENDS AND IT'S A COMMUNITY THAT MAYBE YOU DON'T ALWAYS HAVE A PLACE THAT YOU FEEL LIKE YOU CAN GO, THIS WOULD BE A FANTASTIC PLACE TO SPEND A WEEKEND.
>> THANK YOU, DIRECTOR SMITH. DIRECTOR NOBLE.
>> I'LL BE BRIEF. I JUST WANTED TO THANK THE ROBOTICS TEAMS FOR COMING.
I LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT ROBOTICS AND THE COMMENT THAT DECA AND TSA SEEMED TO GET ALL THE PUBLICITY.
I BELIEVE IN OUR BOARD MEETINGS, WE'VE ACTUALLY HAD MORE PRESENTATIONS FROM THE ROBOTICS TEAMS, THAN EITHER DECA OR TSA.
AT LEAST THEY'RE TALKING TO US.
THE OTHER THING I JUST WANT TO CONGRATULATE YOU GUYS FOR BEING BACK HERE ON THE BOARD.
THROUGH THE SUMMER IS JUST WEIRD COMING TO THESE BOARD MEETINGS AND NOT HAVING STUDENTS AROUND US AND COMMENTS.
IT JUST FEELS RIGHT THAT WE ARE STUDYING STUDENTS BACK IN THIS ROOM.
THANK YOU GUYS FOR COMING. THAT'S ALL.
>> THANK YOU. ORIGINALLY I WAS TO LEAVE IT AT MY LEDGE REPORT, BUT NOW I'M EXCITED ABOUT SOME OTHER THINGS.
I WANT TO WELCOME ALL OF OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES AND YOUR ENGAGEMENT IS EXCITING AND EXHILARATING AND GIVES DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES THAT WE DON'T HAVE.
WE'RE OBVIOUSLY BEEN OUT OF THE CLASSROOM FOR A LITTLE WHILE AS STUDENTS.
EVEN THOUGH I'M DOING A GROWTH MINDSET, CONTINUING EDUCATION, IT'S STILL A DIFFERENT THING.
BUT THERE'S A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE NETWORK THROUGH
[02:05:01]
WASA AND IT'S ALL ACTIVE STUDENTS AND BOARDS CAN BE PART OF THIS.AARON'S GOING TO SEND YOU THE LINK BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE YOUR EMAILS YET.
THIS GROUP THAT GROUP MEETS MONTHLY DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR FROM SEPTEMBER TO MAY TO CONNECT STUDENT BOARD REPRESENTATIVES TO ISSUES AND TOPICS REGARDING K12 EDUCATION IN WASHINGTON STATE.
YOU ALL CAN JOIN THIS IF YOU'RE INTERESTED BECAUSE IT SEEMS THAT YOU'VE GOT SOME INTEREST AND SOME IDEAS AND THIS WOULD BE A GREAT WAY FOR YOU TO CONNECT WITH NOT ONLY THE LEGISLATIVE NETWORK BUT STUDENTS.
BECAUSE I REALLY BELIEVE THAT ONE OF THE THINGS WE WANT TO DO IS EMPOWER STUDENTS TO BE THEIR OWN LEADERS BECAUSE YOU KNOW BEST HOW TO ORGANIZE YOURSELVES, I THINK.
THIS, AARON, I JUST SENT IT TO YOU.
[LAUGHTER] THERE'S THAT AND THE OTHER WAS SENDING.
YOU'LL BE GETTING THE PRIORITIES LIST FOR THOSE THINGS.
IT'S A LOT TO READ THROUGH, SO DON'T WORRY IF YOU DON'T GET THROUGH IT.
AS A BOARD, WE'RE REQUIRED TO DO EQUITY BIAS TRAINING.
WE RECENTLY HAD, I BELIEVE IT WAS MICROAGGRESSION TRAINING.
WAS THAT THE BOARD ONE THAT WE DID? WE HEARD ABOUT TEACHING TOLERANCE.
I THINK THE MATERIAL IS AVAILABLE SINCE IT WAS AN OPEN BOARD MEETING THAT I INVITE ALL OF OUR MEMBERS OF OUR AUDIENCE TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE TRAINING WE'RE TAKING.
ONE OF IT THAT I AM THINKING ABOUT THIS IS WE HAVE THIS HANDY-DANDY GUIDE CALLED SPEAK UP AT SCHOOL, RESPONDING TO EVERYDAY STEREOTYPES AND BIAS.
FOR THE ADULT LEARNING FOR US, IT'S HANDY TO HAVE THIS GUIDE.
AS YOU'RE IN SITUATIONS LIKE OUR STUDENTS HAVE BEEN SPEAKING UP ALREADY, IT SHOWS WHAT YOU CAN DO TO INTERRUPT QUESTION AND EDUCATE AN ECHO WHEN YOU HEAR THINGS OF BIAS, MICRO-AGGRESSIVE, INTOLERANT, OR HATEFUL THINGS.
ONE OF THE THINGS IS TO INTERRUPT THE SPEAKER AND ADDRESS IT RIGHT NOW, WHICH I BELIEVE OUR STUDENTS ARE MODELING THAT BEHAVIOR FOR US AS ADULTS AND TO INTERRUPT WHEN WE SAY WE DON'T LIKE WORDS LIKE THAT OR THAT'S HURTFUL.
THEN WE CAN QUESTION, EDUCATE, AND ECHOES THAT WE CAN HAVE A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING HOW HURTFUL SOME OF THE WORDS THAT WE AS ADULTS, IN PARTICULAR IN THIS SITUATION AND THE IMPACT THAT WE'RE HAVING UPON OUR STUDENTS AND OUR LISTENING AUDIENCE.
I'M GOING TO INVITE EVERYONE WHO LIKES TO COME TO BOARD MEETINGS A LOT BECAUSE I'VE SEEN MANY OF YOU FOR MONTHS NOW THAT TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ADULT EDUCATION AND GROWTH MINDSET THAT WE AS A BOARD ARE DOING RIGHT NOW.
IT'S ALSO THE LAW. I'M GOING TO INVITE YOU TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE BOARD STUDY SESSION.
I'LL BE VERY HAPPY TO SHARE SOME OF THE INFORMATION BECAUSE AS ADULTS WE SOMETIMES FORGET THAT WE NEED TO ALSO BE CONTINUING TO EDUCATE OURSELVES AND UNDERSTAND HOW THE INTENT AND THE IMPACT CAN BE DIFFERENT ON WHAT WE'RE DOING.
AS WE'RE ALL HERE AT 8:38 AT NIGHT, THERE'S OBVIOUS INTEREST.
I THINK THAT WE CAN GROW AND LEARN TOGETHER.
I REALLY WANT TO APPRECIATE YOU SPEAKING OUT ON THESE ISSUES THAT WERE BROUGHT UP FOR ALL OF YOU.
I REALLY LOOK FORWARD TO THIS YEAR.
THIS IS GOING TO BE VERY EXCITING.
THERE WE GO. I'VE GOT MORE OF THESE.
IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE TO TAKE ONE OF THESE TEACHING TOLERANCES, ANYONE IN THE AUDIENCE, I'VE GOT THIS INFORMATION AND CAN SHARE THE LINKS ALSO BECAUSE WE'RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER.
>> THANK YOU. DIRECTOR KILBOURNE.
>> BUT I'M SORRY, THIS IS NOT THE TIME FOR AUDIENCE COMMENTS. WE'VE GOT TO KEEP GOING.
>> THANK YOU, DIRECTOR CHASE AND ALL OUR STUDENTS.
I APPRECIATE YOUR COMMENTS AND YOU WILL GET TO KNOW THAT THIS IS A VERY UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR FROM THE PUBLIC, HEAR FROM EACH OTHER, AND CONDUCT THE BUSINESS OF THE DISTRICT ALWAYS TO STAY FOCUSED.
IN THAT SENSE, WHEN I WAS LOOKING AT OUR AGENDA, AND I WAS REMEMBERING THE WORK THAT WE DID ON OUR SCHOOL BOARD GOALS WHICH ARE ALIGNED TO THE STRATEGIC PLAN THAT TOOK US MANY YEARS TO DEVELOP WITH OUR COMMUNITY, ONCE AGAIN, IT'S SO HELPFUL TO STAY FOCUSED.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I LOOKED, OF COURSE, LIKE DIRECTOR KAYDENS, I LOOKED RIGHT AT OUR SECOND SET OF GOALS, OUR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT GOALS AND I SAID, WHAT ARE WE DOING, WHAT AM I DOING? I LOOKED UP OUR TEST SCORES BECAUSE THEY'RE NOW UP ON THE OSPI WEBSITE AND I'M CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC THAT WE HAD ACTUAL SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT.
[02:10:04]
WE STILL HAVE WAYS TO GO TO GET PAST THE PANDEMIC AND THE LEARNING LOSS THAT STUDENTS EXPERIENCE BUT I DID SEE, FOR INSTANCE, IN OUR MATH SCORES, 8.5%.I'LL ADMIT THAT, BUT IT WAS 8.5% INCREASE. THAT'S COOL.
THANK YOU, DR. MINER AND STAFF FOR CONTINUING TO SHEPHERD OUR STUDENTS ALONG.
I WOULD JUST ADD MY QUALITATIVE EXPERIENCE.
STEPPING BACK INTO THE CLASSROOM AS A VOLUNTEER, I VOLUNTEER FOR THE FOURTH GRADE.
THIS YEAR STUDENTS REALLY APPEAR TO BE AHEAD ALREADY, THERE WELL AHEAD IN THEIR READING SKILLS AND THEIR MATH SKILLS FROM THE SAME TIME LAST YEAR.
QUALITATIVELY ANECDOTALLY, ONE CLASSROOM, I'M SEEING KIDS WHO ARE AHEAD OF WHERE THE KIDS WERE LAST YEAR.
THIS CLASSROOM IS UNIQUE, IT'S GOT A LOT OF MULTILINGUAL STUDENTS IN IT AND IT'S REALLY COOL.
THESE ARE GOOD LITTLE KIDS AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THEM GROW THIS YEAR.
OTHERWISE, THAT WOULD BE IT. THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU. I JUST WANT TO CLARIFY PROTOCOL BECAUSE THERE SEEMS TO BE A LITTLE BIT OF ENGST AND WE DON'T WANT TO CREATE A ENGST.
THE WAY THE BOARD MEETING IS SET UP IS FOR THE PUBLIC TO COME AND MAKE PUBLIC COMMENTS.
HOPEFULLY, THAT RELATE TO WHAT'S ACTUALLY GOING ON IN THE DISTRICT OR SPECIFIC AGENDA TOPICS.
WE DON'T RESPOND AT THAT TIME.
WE CAN RESPOND, DURING OUR BOARD COMMENT TIMES AND IT'S NOT AN OPEN FORUM.
THIS ISN'T LIKE A Q&A OR COMMUNITY FORUM.
HOWEVER, ANYBODY WHO WANTS TO SPEAK WITH US INDIVIDUALLY AFTER A MEETING IS WELCOME TO DO SO.
WE'RE AVAILABLE ON E-MAIL, YOU CAN COME TO ANOTHER MEETING AND MAKE A PUBLIC COMMENT.
WERE SIMPLY FOLLOWING A PROTOCOL, THAT IS SET UP FOR BOARD MEETINGS AND IT'S A REGULAR BOARD MEETINGS.
I JUST WANTED TO EXPLAIN HOW THINGS GO THAT DURING THE BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS, WHICH INCLUDES A STUDENT ADVISORS THAT'S ARCHED, OUR TIME TO SAY WHAT WE FEEL IS NECESSARY TO SAY.
I'M SO THRILLED TO HAVE YOU GUYS HERE, THE STUDENT ADVISORS, YOU'RE CLEARLY GOING TO BE A WONDERFUL CONTRIBUTION TO OUR WORK.
IN PAST YEARS, IT'S USUALLY TAKEN A MEETING OR TWO BEFORE WE SEE THE KIND OF BRAVERY THAT SOME OF YOU HAVE REALLY SHOWN TONIGHT IN TERMS OF SAYING YOUR MIND, SHARING WITH US EXACTLY YOUR EXPERIENCES AND YOUR PERSPECTIVES BASED ON YOUR EXPERIENCES.
IN THE CONTEXT OF WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT.
IT'S JUST OBVIOUSLY OUR TEACHERS HAVE DONE A GREAT JOB WITH YOU GUYS, YOUR PARENTS TOO.
I DID WANT TO MENTION LAST TUESDAY WE HAD A STUDY SESSION ON OUR DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM.
WE GOT TO SEE A LOT OF VERY GOOD DATA.
GOOD BOTH IN TERMS OF VERY HELPFUL DATA AND VERY POSITIVE DATA.
I'M LOOKING AT DR. VERGARA WHO IS HAS BEEN OVERSEEING THAT.
THIS IS A PROGRAM THAT STARTED IN KINDERGARTEN IN TERMS OF HAVING BOTH ARE NATIVE SPANISH-SPEAKING STUDENTS AND NATIVE ENGLISH-SPEAKING STUDENTS IN A CLASS WHERE THEY'RE ALL SPEAKING, 90% OF THE TIME IN SPANISH AND 10% OF THE TIME IN ENGLISH IN KINDERGARTEN AND THEN WHEN THEY MOVE UP TO FIRST GRADE, IT'LL BE 80, 20, AND THEN 70, 30, ETC.
WHEN THEY HIT FOURTH OR FIFTH GRADE, IT'S 50/50 AND IT STAYS.
IT'S IMPROVING BY LINGUALISM AND BY LITERACY FOR OUR STUDENTS AT A VERY YOUNG AGE, WE STARTED AT TWO OF OUR SCHOOLS, COLLEGE PLACE ELEMENTARY IN CEDAR VALLEY WHERE WE HAVE A LOT OF MULTILINGUAL STUDENTS.
THEY ARE NOW WE HAVE, NOW WE HAVE K1 AND 2 THERE.
THIS YEAR WE'RE STARTING KINDERGARTEN CLASSROOM AT MOUNT LIKE TERRACE ELEMENTARY AND SPRUCE.
DO I HAVE THAT CORRECT? THAT CORRECT.
I THINK IT'S EXCITING THE PROGRESS THAT WE'RE SEEING ON THE DATA POINTS THAT ARE BEING COLLECTED SHOW BETTER PROGRESS FOR OUR DUAL LANGUAGE KIDS THAN OUR DISTRICT LEVEL KIDS.
THE RESEARCH ON THIS REALLY SHOWS THAT WHEN THESE KIT YOU CAN IMAGINE, I MEAN, I PERSONALLY WISH THAT I HAD LEARNED SPANISH WHEN I WAS A KID BECAUSE LITTLE KIDS PICK UP LANGUAGES MUCH,
[02:15:02]
MUCH FASTER THAN US OLD PEOPLE.BUT ANYWAY, IT'S JUST A REALLY EXCITING PROGRAM THAT IS SHOWING A LOT OF PROGRESS, A LOT OF PROMISE.
WE REALLY APPRECIATE IT, THAT STUDY SESSION THAT WE HAD ON IT AND WE ALSO APPRECIATE IT.
I WANTED TO THANK YOU FOR THE FOLLOW-UP DATA IN RESPONSE TO OUR QUESTIONS THAT WAS REALLY TIMELY.
I WANT TO THANK THE TOURIST PARK, KIDS AND PRINCIPAL WHO CAME AND THE DISCUSSION THAT FOLLOWED IN TERMS OF BELONGING, I THINK WAS REALLY GREAT.
THE ROBOTICS IS, I ALREADY MADE MY SPEECH ABOUT HOW MUCH I LOVE ROBOTICS.
I'M JUST EXCITED ABOUT THIS SCHOOL YEAR.
I THINK WE'RE REALLY UNDERWAY.
I THINK YOUR COMMENTS ABOUT THE KIDS BEING STARTING FOURTH-GRADE MORE READY, THAT WE'RE SEEING, THAT JUMPING BACK INTO NORMALCY AND IT'S TAKEN A FEW YEARS POST PANDEMIC, BUT I THINK WE'RE GETTING CLOSE TO GETTING RID OF SOME OF THAT PANDEMIC STUFF.
THAT'S REALLY POSITIVE NEWS AND IT'S EXCITING.
I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO DR. MINER.
>> JUST A COUPLE OF THINGS TONIGHT.
ONE COMMON THEME I THINK I HEARD WAS STEADY SESSIONS AND I DO WANT TO JUST FOR OUR STUDENTS OF COURSE, AND THOSE WHO MIGHT BE LISTENING AT HOME.
THE STEADY SESSIONS ARE A WAY THAT THE BOARD TAKES A DEEP DIVE INTO A TOPIC.
WE WILL SPEND AN HOUR TO AN HOUR AND 15 MINUTES ON ONE TOPIC AS WE DID WITH THE DUAL LANGUAGE AND MULTILINGUAL LEARNER PROGRAMS. IT'S A GREAT WAY TO LEARN ABOUT SOMETHING DEEPLY.
THERE IS NO PUBLIC COMMENTS ON THAT.
THOSE MEETINGS, IT'S A MORE INFORMAL WAY FOR THE BOARD TO LEARN ABOUT SOMETHING, BUT WE HAVE PUBLISHED OUR TOPICS FOR THE YEAR.
AND I WOULD DEFINITELY ENCOURAGE PEOPLE INCLUDING OUR STUDENTS WHO AREN'T REQUIRED TO COME TO THOSE.
TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE SCHEDULE OF TOPICS FOR THE YEAR, SEE WHAT INTERESTS YOU AND PLEASE JOIN US INTO THOSE AT HOME AS WELL.
THREE EVENTS I'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU TONIGHT, FRIDAY IS ORANGE SHIRT DAY IN HONOR OF RECOGNITION OF THE NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR THOSE WHO WERE PLACED IN, SUFFERED IN INDIAN BOARDING SCHOOLS.
IF YOU GO TO OUR INDIAN ED PAGE ON OUR WEBSITE, YOU CAN LEARN ABOUT THE ACTIVITIES IN SEATTLE THIS WEEKEND, WHICH MANY IN OUR DISTRICT WILL BE PARTICIPATING IN.
FRIDAY ARE INSURED DAY THREE OPPORTUNITIES TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ENTRY PLAN FOR OUR COMMUNITY.
AS YOU KNOW, I'M GOING TO EVERY SCHOOL, EVERY DEPARTMENT, BUT THESE ARE BIG COMMUNITY FORUMS. THOSE ARE TOMORROW AT EDMUNDS WOOD WEIGH, HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARY, OCTOBER 11TH AT THE MOTLEY TOURISTS PUBLIC LIBRARY, AND OCTOBER 26TH AT THE LYNN WOULD HIGH-SCHOOL LIBRARY.
THOSE ARE ON OUR WEBSITE. WE'LL WEBSITE WILL ALSO BE POSTING A VIRTUAL ONE THAT PEOPLE CAN JUST WATCH THEM PARTICIPATE TAPES, THOSE ARE ALL IN THE EVENINGS AND THE SCHEDULES ON THE WEBSITE.
FINALLY, SATURDAY WE HAVE THE FIESTA CULTURAL FROM 11-2 AND COLLEGE PLACE, MIDDLE-SCHOOL COMMONS.
THIS IS OUR CELEBRATION OF HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH.
I HOPE THAT MANY WILL BE ABLE TO ATTEND THAT AND CELEBRATE OUR STUDENTS.
THERE'S SOME WONDERFUL PERFORMERS SLATED TO BE THERE AND SOME OTHER GROUPS.
I HOPE THAT FOLKS WILL BE ABLE TO ATTEND THAT.
THANK YOU. THAT BRINGS US TO THE LAST ITEM,
[20. ITEMS FOR FUTURE CONSIDERATION OR INFORMATION]
WHICH IS ARE THERE ANY ITEMS ARE TOPICS THAT BOARD MEMBERS WOULD LIKE US TO ADD TO OUR STUDY SESSION OR BOARD DISCUSSION AGENDAS OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU WANT TO BRING UP, A TOPIC WE SHOULD ADDRESS?>> NO. I THINK WE GET THE LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES ONE WE GOT THAT.
>> WE WANT TO HAVE A VOTE ON THAT WHEN WE'RE READING.
>>I'M JUST EXCITED TO SEE HOW OUR BOARD OF DISTINCTION APPLICATION GOES.
>> WELL, THAT WILL BE FUN TOO.
WE'LL SEE, I DON'T THINK WE FIND OUT ABOUT THAT TOE WAS THEIR ZONING.
WE'RE GOOD WE CERTAINLY HAVE PLENTY OF TOPICS.
WHEN YOU GUYS LOOK AT OUR AGENDAS FOR THE STUDENTS STUDY SESSIONS, I THINK YOU'LL SEE WE'RE TALKING ABOUT A LOT OF THINGS AS HERE.
WITH THAT BEING SAID, THIS REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF DIRECTORS IS ADJOURNED
