[6. SUPERINTENDENT REPORT-6:35 pm]

MINER FOR HER REPORT.

WELL, HOPEFULLY YOU HAD A LITTLE BIT OF A CHANCE TO WATCH OUR SOCIAL MEDIA THAT OUR COMMUNICATIONS TEAM PUT OUT AND A VIDEO THEY HAD DONE AROUND THE FIRST DAY, AND WE JUST HAVE A FEW MORE FIRST DAY IMAGES TO SHARE WITH YOU.

PRINCIPAL SENT ME THESE PICTURES AND THEN ERIN PUT THIS TOGETHER FOR US.

SO A FEW MORE.

IF A PICTURE TELLS A THOUSAND WORDS, AS THEY SAY, OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

I THINK YOU CAN GET A SENSE FROM BOTH OF THE VIDEOS THAT WERE PUT TOGETHER THAT IT WAS A JOYFUL DAY OF CELEBRATION AND ANTICIPATION FOR OUR STUDENTS.

GREAT TO SEE EVERYBODY OUT THERE AGAIN, AND OUR KINDERGARTNERS STARTED ON MONDAY.

HEARD FROM A LOT OF PRINCIPALS THAT THEY WERE OFF TO A GOOD START.

I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT A FEW CLASSROOMS THIS WEEK SO FAR AND THEY SEEM TO BE SETTLING IN NICELY AND ENJOYING THEIR TIME.

NEXT WEEK WE FEEL A LITTLE BEREFT WITHOUT OUR STUDENTS.

NEXT WEEK OR NOT NEXT WEEK, BUT AT THE NEXT BOARD MEETING WE'LL HAVE THE FIRST OF TWO BOARD MEETINGS WHERE WE'LL BE SWEARING IN NEW STUDENTS, STILL WORKING WITH THEM ON SOME TRAINING AROUND BEING A BOARD MEMBER, A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE BOARD THIS YEAR, IN ADDITION TO THE OTHER THINGS THEY'VE DONE, WE'RE GOING TO BE ASKING THEM TO PRESENT A QUARTERLY REPORT AS A BODY TO THE BOARD ON KIND OF THE THINGS THEY'RE WORKING ON AND THE THINGS THE ADVOCACY THEY'VE BEEN DOING AND THE THINGS THEY'VE BEEN LEARNING.

SO WE LOOK FORWARD TO HAVING THAT ENERGY BACK IN THE ROOM WITH THE ADDITION OF OUR STUDENT ADVISORS BACK WITH US NEXT WEEK.

THAT'S IT FOR ME. THANK YOU.

THE OPENING OF SCHOOL IS ALWAYS EXCITING AND I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH THE STUDENTS WHO ARE ON THE SUPERINTENDENT STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE, AND WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A GREAT GROUP OF STUDENT ADVISORS TO THE BOARD, AND MANY, MANY OF THEM WANTED TO DO THIS ROLE, AND I HOPE THEY'RE WORKING IT OUT WITHOUT DUKING IT OUT TOO MUCH THAT

[00:05:07]

[INAUDIBLE].

SO IT'S GOING TO BE WONDERFUL TO HAVE THEM.

NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS APPROVAL OF MINUTES, AND I'M GOING TO DO IT AS CHUNKS BY DAY FOR THOSE WHO WEREN'T HERE

ANY ABSTENTIONS.

ABSTAIN, AND THE MINUTES FROM THE AUGUST 30TH SCHOOL BOARD SPECIAL MEETING ARE APPROVED.

NEXT, DO WE HAVE PUBLIC COMMENTS?

[8. PUBLIC COMMENTS-6:50 pm]

WE HAVE THREE PUBLIC COMMENTS THIS EVENING.

FIRST, GERALD WHITMARSH.

YEAH, I APPRECIATE THAT.

DOES THIS GO UP? NO. OH, JUST PICK IT UP.

YOU TAKE [INAUDIBLE].

NO, IT'S JUST THE MICROPHONE.

OH, LOOK AT THAT. OH, [INAUDIBLE] IN HONOR OF CONSTITUTION DAY AND THE LAWS REQUIRING THE CONSTITUTION BEING TAUGHT IN SCHOOL, I WANTED TO READ SOME OF THE CONSTITUTION PREAMBLE.

THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES DATED SEPTEMBER 17TH, 1787.

WE, THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES, IN ORDER TO FORM A MORE PERFECT UNION, ESTABLISH JUSTICE, INSURE DOMESTIC TRANQUILITY, PROVIDE FOR THE COMMON DEFENSE, PROMOTE THE GENERAL WELFARE, AND SECURE THE BLESSINGS OF LIBERTY TO OURSELVES AND OUR POSTERITY.

DO ORDAIN AND ESTABLISH THIS CONSTITUTION FOR THE UNITED STATES.

THE FIRST THREE ARTICLES DEAL WITH LEGISLATIVE, EXECUTIVE AND JUDICIAL BRANCHES.

I WANTED TO SKIP TO ARTICLE FOUR SECTION FOUR DEALING WITH STATES.

THE UNITED STATES SHALL GUARANTEE TO EVERY STATE IN THIS UNION A REPUBLICAN FORM OF GOVERNMENT AND SHALL PROTECT EACH OF THEM AGAINST INVASION AND ON APPLICATION OF THE LEGISLATURE OR THE EXECUTIVE WHEN THE LEGISLATURE CANNOT BE CONVENED AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, AND SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PARTS ARE THE BILL OF RIGHTS WITH WHICH THE CONSTITUTION WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN APPROVED.

FIRST AMENDMENT CONGRESS SHALL MAKE NO LAW RESPECTING AN ESTABLISHMENT OF RELIGION OR PROHIBITING THE FREE EXERCISE THEREOF, OR ABRIDGING THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH OR OF THE PRESS, OR THE RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE PEACEABLY TO ASSEMBLE AND TO PETITION THE GOVERNMENT FOR A REDRESS OF GRIEVANCES.

SECOND AMENDMENT, A WELL-REGULATED MILITIA BEING NECESSARY FOR THE SECURITY OF A FREE STATE, THE RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. THIRD AMENDMENT NO SOLDIER SHALL, IN TIME OF PEACE, BE QUARTERED IN ANY HOUSE WITHOUT THE CONSENT OF THE OWNER, NOR IN TIME OF WAR, BUT IN A MANNER TO BE PRESCRIBED BY LAW.

[00:10:02]

FOURTH AMENDMENT, THE RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE TO BE SECURE IN THEIR PERSONS, HOUSES, PAPERS AND EFFECTS AGAINST UNREASONABLE SEARCH AND SEIZURE SHALL NOT BE VIOLATED AND NO WARRANTS SHALL ISSUE, BUT UPON PROBABLE CAUSE, SUPPORTED BY OATH OR AFFIRMATION, AND PARTICULARLY DESCRIBING THE PLACE TO BE SEARCHED AND THE PERSONS OR THINGS TO BE SEIZED. FIFTH AMENDMENT.

NO PERSON SHALL BE HELD TO ANSWER FOR A CAPITAL OR OTHERWISE INFAMOUS CRIME UNLESS ON PRESENTATION OR INDICTMENT OF A GRAND JURY, EXCEPT IN CASES ARISING IN THE LAND OR NAVAL FORCES OR IN THE MILITIA.

WHEN IN ACTUAL SERVICE, IN TIME OF WAR OR PUBLIC DANGER.

NOR SHALL ANY PERSON BE SUBJECT FOR THE SAME OFFENSE TO BE TWICE PUT IN JEOPARDY OF LIFE OR LIMB.

NOR SHALL BE COMPELLED IN ANY CRIMINAL CASE TO BE A WITNESS AGAINST HIMSELF, NOR BE DEPRIVED OF LIFE, LIBERTY OR PROPERTY WITHOUT DUE PROCESS OF LAW.

NOR SHALL PRIVATE PROPERTY BE TAKEN FOR PUBLIC USE WITHOUT JUST COMPENSATION.

SIXTH AMENDMENT.

IN ALL CRIMINAL PROSECUTIONS, THE ACCUSED SHALL ENJOY THE RIGHT TO A SPEEDY AND PUBLIC TRIAL BY AN IMPARTIAL JURY OF THE STATE AND DISTRICT WHEREIN THE CRIME SHALL HAVE BEEN COMMITTED. WHICH DISTRICT SHALL HAVE BEEN PREVIOUSLY? I'M GOING TO JUMP DOWN TO AMENDMENT TEN.

YOUR TIME IS UP. THE POWERS NOT DELEGATED TO THE UNITED STATES BY THE CONSTITUTION ARE PROHIBITED BY THE STATES ARE RESERVED TO THE STATES, RESPECTIVELY, OR TO THE PEOPLE.

THANK YOU. NEXT UP IS CHERYL [INAUDIBLE].

[INAUDIBLE] I LEARNED SOME NEWS ON SATURDAY MORNING AND THE FIRST THING I THOUGHT IS I THINK MY SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS PROBABLY ALREADY KNOW THIS, BUT IN CASE THEY DON'T, I NEED TO MAKE SURE TO SHARE IT WITH THEM.

THIS IS AN ARTICLE FROM K-12 DIVE.

GOP HOUSE COMMITTEE MEMBERS PROPOSE 80% CUT TO TITLE ONE.

THE REPUBLICAN LED HOUSE APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE PROPOSED A BILL AIMED AT REMOVING WASTE IN GOVERNMENT.

SOME SAY CUTS WOULD BE DETRIMENTAL.

I'LL JUST READ A LITTLE BIT OF THIS ARTICLE.

TITLE ONE FUNDING FOR SCHOOLS EDUCATING STUDENTS FROM LOW INCOME FAMILIES WOULD FACE A SEVERE 80% CUT UNDER A PROPOSAL FOR FISCAL YEAR 2024 BY THE REPUBLICAN LED HOUSE APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE.

REPUBLICANS ON THE COMMITTEE SAID IN A STATEMENT THURSDAY.

THE DECREASE IS JUSTIFIED BECAUSE OF UNSPENT FEDERAL COVID-19 FUNDS.

FURTHER INVESTMENTS WILL NOT BE PROVIDED UNTIL THESE FUNDS ARE USED RESPONSIBLY, THE STATEMENT SAID.

IN A SWIFT FRIDAY MORNING SESSION, THE HOUSE APPROPRIATIONS, LABOR, HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES, EDUCATION AND RELATED AGENCIES.

SUBCOMMITTEE CLEARED THE BILL FOR FULL APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE CONSIDERED AT A LATER TIME.

DEMOCRATS ON THE COMMITTEE SAID THAT THE LEGISLATION IS AN ASSAULT ON EDUCATION AND JOB TRAINING, DECIMATES RESEARCH FUNDING AND ABANDONS ONGOING PUBLIC HEALTH CRISES. IN A FRIDAY STATEMENT.

THEY ALSO SAID THAT THE CUTS WOULD LEAD TO A LOSS OF 220,000.

CLASSROOM TEACHERS.

THESE ARE MY STUDENTS.

THESE ARE OUR STUDENTS.

THESE ARE ALL OF OUR STUDENTS.

IN THE COUNTRY.

I DON'T HAVE A LETTER WRITTEN.

I'M JUST SPEAKING FROM THE HIP.

SO WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO? OBI-WAN, YOU ARE OUR ONLY HOPE.

I AM IN DISBELIEF, BUT UNFORTUNATELY NOT IN UTTER DISBELIEF ANYMORE.

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO? CUT FUNDING FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION.

THEREBY PROVIDING A SLIPPERY SLOPE TO PRIVATIZATION OR JUST GOT THE WHOLE MIDDLE CLASS SO THAT WE DON'T HAVE A FUNCTIONING DEMOCRACY IN OUR COUNTRY ANYMORE.

I'M SURE THAT THIS IS NOT NEWS TO YOU.

UNFORTUNATELY, IT WAS NEWS TO ME.

SO LET'S GET TO WORK.

WELL, I USUALLY DON'T COMMENT.

I WOULD POINT OUT THAT SOMETHING LIKE THAT HAS TO BE PASSED BY THE SENATE AS WELL, WHICH IS LESS LIKELY TO HAPPEN.

THANK YOU, AND NEXT IS SARAH [INAUDIBLE].

HELLO. I'D RATHER BE SOMEWHERE ELSE RIGHT NOW, BUT HERE WE ARE.

SO OKAY MY 11TH GRADER RECEIVED NEWS AT SCHOOL TODAY AT PROBABLY ABOUT THE SAME TIME AS I RECEIVED AN EMAIL AT 10:10 A.M.

[00:15:04]

SAYING THAT IF I'M NOT REGISTERED BY TOMORROW FOR THE PSAT, MY 11TH GRADER IS NOT TAKING IT.

THIS IS THE FIRST NOTICE OF ANYTHING THAT WE'VE HAD ABOUT THE PSAT, ASIDE FROM THE JUNE 14TH EMAIL FROM SOMEBODY SAYING THAT THE DISTRICT IS IN CHARGE OF PSAT REGISTRATION AND STUFF, AND IT'S POSSIBLE THAT MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL HAS A NEW PERSON IN THAT PARTICULAR OFFICE AND THEY WERE DELAYED AND THE OTHER HIGH SCHOOLS ALL GOT A WEEK OR TWO NOTICE.

I DON'T KNOW. HOWEVER, HERE WE ARE.

MY CHILD ALSO GOT THAT NOTICE AND THEY WERE LIKE, OH, DID DID WE REGISTER? I'M LIKE, I DON'T KNOW, MAN.

I WENT ON THE WEBSITE AND I PAID THE 18 BUCKS, BUT IS THERE SOMETHING ELSE WE NEED TO DO? SO I REPLIED TO THAT EMAIL AND SAID, IS THERE SOMETHING ELSE WE NEED TO DO? I GAVE YOU THE MONEY BECAUSE I WOULD LIKE MY CHILD TO TAKE THE PSAT, BUT THE NOTICE OF 24 TO 36 HOURS, DEPENDING ON WHAT TIME TOMORROW THEY CUT OFF THE REGISTRATION.

I DON'T KNOW. THEY JUST SAID BY SEPTEMBER 13TH.

I'M LIKE, THAT'S REAL SHORT NOTICE ANYWAY, SO IF WE COULD FIX THAT, THAT'D BE GREAT FOR NEXT YEAR'S JUNIORS.

THANK YOU. NEXT IS THE CONSENT AGENDA.

[9. CONSENT AGENDA-7:20 pm]

THIS IS THE GROUP OF FAIRLY ROUTINE ITEMS THAT WE VOTE ON TOGETHER AS A BLOCK, BUT WE CAN DISCUSS SEPARATELY AND OUR VOTE ON SEPARATELY.

TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA INCLUDES SIX ITEMS. THREE OF THEM HAVE TO DO WITH PERSONNEL AND OR AGREEMENTS WITH WITH STAFF OR RELATED TO STAFF.

TWO ARE INTERLOCAL AGREEMENTS AND ONE IS A FIELD TRIP.

DO I HEAR A MOTION IN A SECOND TO APPROVE TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA? MOVE TO APPROVE. SECOND.

I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE IN A SECOND.

IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? I DID WANT TO SAY ONE THING ON HERE, SO I ACTUALLY HAVE BEEN WORKING A LITTLE BIT IN MY DAY JOB WITH THE WASHINGTON CENTER FOR DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING YOUTH.

SO I'M GLAD THAT THE DISTRICT IS GETTING AN AGREEMENT WITH THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE DOING A LOT OF REALLY GOOD THINGS, AND WHAT I HAVE LEARNED ALSO IS THAT THERE'S A LOT OF MOVEMENT IN THE DEAF COMMUNITY ABOUT BEING RECOGNIZED AND HOW THE WAYS THAT WE WORK WITH THEM AREN'T WORKING.

FOR EXAMPLE, WHAT I DIDN'T REALIZE IS THAT NOTE WRITING IS NOT A GOOD WAY TO COMMUNICATE WITH DEAF PEOPLE BECAUSE THEY LEARN SIGN LANGUAGE AND THE GRAMMAR AND SYNTAX AND SIGN LANGUAGE IS NOT THE SAME AS WRITTEN ENGLISH, SO IT'S A REALLY HARD WAY TO COMMUNICATE.

SO ANYWAY, I JUST THAT JUMPED OUT AT ME AND I'M GLAD THAT WE'RE DOING WORK WITH THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE A GOOD GROUP.

THANKS, KEITH.

ANY OTHER COMMENTS? OKAY. I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE.

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF APPROVING TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA, PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE.

AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED SAY NAY.

ANY ABSTENTIONS? AND TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA PASSES.

NEXT IS UNFINISHED BUSINESS.

[10. UNFINISHED BUSINESS- 7:50 pm]

JUST HAVE ONE ITEM OF UNFINISHED BUSINESS TONIGHT.

ITEM 10.1 IS THE SECOND READING AND A RECOMMENDATION TO APPROVE A NEW BOARD POLICY 3117 STUDENTS IN OR RELEASED FROM AN INSTITUTIONAL EDUCATIONAL EDUCATION FACILITY.

THERE ARE NO CHANGES FROM THE FIRST READING THAT WE SAW IN AUGUST, AND THIS WAS BROUGHT FORWARD TO US BY GREG SCHWAB.

EXCELLENT. DO I HEAR A MOTION AND A SECOND TO APPROVE THE NEW BOARD POLICY 3117? MOVE TO APPROVE.

SECOND.

I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE, AND A SECOND.

IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? I THINK WE DID DISCUSS IT LAST TIME WHEN WE FIRST LOOKED AT IT.

OKAY, I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.

THE NEW BOARD POLICY 3117 REGARDING STUDENTS IN OR RELEASED FROM AN INSTITUTIONAL EDUCATION FACILITY IS APPROVED.

NEXT, WE HAVE OUR LEGISLATIVE UPDATE.

[12. LEGISLATIVE UPDATES]

THANK YOU, DIRECTOR KATIMS. AS WE KNOW, THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY IS COMING UP ON THE 22ND AND 23RD OF THIS MONTH, AND THIS IS THE MEETING WHERE THE ALL THE SCHOOL DIRECTORS GET TOGETHER AND DECIDE TO VOTE ON PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO THE [INAUDIBLE] AND DECIDE THE PRIORITIES OF THE LEGISLATIVE PROPOSALS THAT HAVE BEEN BROUGHT FORWARD EARLIER IN THE YEAR.

WE AS A DISTRICT SUBMITTED EIGHT OF THEM, AND OF THOSE EIGHT, MOST OF THEM DO HAVE A DO PASS.

THE PROCESS IS THAT THE RESOLUTIONS COMMITTEE THEN LOOKS AT ALL THE PROPOSALS, MAKES SOME RECOMMENDATIONS TO GENERAL BODY, BUT THESE ARE NOT BINDING.

THEN WE ALL GET TOGETHER, WE REVIEW AND THEN VOTE IF WE WANT TO ADOPT, AMEND OR NOT ADOPT THE PARTICULAR PROPOSALS.

[00:20:07]

THERE ARE THIS TIME 48 PROPOSALS THAT WILL BE VOTED ON, INCLUDING A BYLAWS AMENDMENT.

THERE'S BEEN A COALITION OF SCHOOL DISTRICTS WORKING TOGETHER TO REVIEW SOME OF THESE PROPOSALS AND MAKE SOME PARTICULAR RECOMMENDATIONS.

I THINK EVERYONE HAS IN THEIR PACKET SOME OF THE NOTES FROM THOSE MEETINGS SO THAT WE CAN THINK ABOUT WHAT KIND OF POSITIONS WE WANT TO TAKE ON HERE.

TO REMIND US BRIEFLY, I WILL TELL US THE FIRST, THERE'S ONE BYLAW AMENDMENT, AND THIS PARTICULAR ONE I DO NOT THINK WE SHOULD BE SUPPORTING BECAUSE WHAT THIS DOES IS IT TAKES AWAY THE WEIGHTED VOTES FROM ACROSS THE DISTRICT, AND SO THERE'S A LOT OF DISCUSSION ON THIS PARTICULAR THIS PARTICULAR BYLAW AMENDMENT.

WHAT THE WEIGHTED VOTES DO IS RIGHT NOW, EVERY BOARD HAS A LEGISLATIVE REPRESENTATIVE.

SO WE ALL START OFF ON EQUAL WEIGHTS THERE, AND IF SOMETHING COMES UP IN A NUMBER OF DISTRICTS WISH TO CALL FOR A WEIGHTED VOTE ON AN ISSUE, THEN THE DISTRICTS ARE ALLOCATED THE NUMBER OF WEIGHTED VOTES DEPENDING ON THE SIZE OF THEIR DISTRICT.

SO, FOR INSTANCE, IF A WEIGHTED VOTE IS CALLED AND WE ARE PARTICIPATING IN THAT, WE WOULD GET A CERTAIN NUMBER OF DELEGATES.

SO I WOULD HAVE LIKE EIGHT VOTES, WHERE A SMALLER DISTRICT WOULD HAVE ONE, AND FOR ME, THIS DOES HELP REPRESENT THE MORE ADEQUATELY REPRESENT THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF THE STATE, AND SO THAT THE REPRESENTATION OF THOSE PEOPLE THAT WE REPRESENT AS BOARDS AND STUDENTS ARE BETTER REPRESENTED BY KEEPING A WEIGHTED VOTE.

THERE'S A LOT OF DISCUSSION ON THIS, BUT MY RECOMMENDATION WOULD BE THAT WE DO NOT SUPPORT THIS BYLAW AMENDMENT, AND SO THAT'S ONE THING TO BRING UP AS A DISCUSSION, AS A BOARD IF WE AGREE WITH THAT.

SO I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU.

I HAD I HAD LOOKED OVER SOME OF THESE FROM WHAT YOU HAD SENT US ON THE EMAIL FROM WSSDA AND I'M GOING TO ASK SOMETHING THAT MAY SOUND A LITTLE SNARKY, BUT DO WE GET THE WEIGHTED VOTE WHEN WE VOTE ON THIS, WHETHER OR NOT WE WANT TO PASS THIS, NOT ON THIS PARTICULAR BYLAW? YOU'RE KIDDING. IT'S ONE [CHUCKLING] ON THIS ONE IT'S ONE VOTE FOR THE ONE VOTE FOR EACH DELEGATE, AND WHO CAME UP WITH THAT RULE? IT'S IN OUR RULES.

IT'S IN THE RULES SOMEWHERE.

YEAH. OKAY. THEY DIDN'T JUST, LIKE, ARBITRARILY--JUST DIDN'T, NO, BUT I'LL ACTUALLY DOUBLE CHECK.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? BECAUSE HAVING PARTICIPATED IN THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY LAST YEAR FOR THE FIRST TIME, I FIND IT VERY INTERESTING, BUT I THOUGHT THAT THE WEIGHTED VOTE WAS PARTICULARLY A HELPFUL PIECE WHEN IT WAS SOMETHING THAT WAS SOMEWHAT CONTENTIOUS, AND OBVIOUSLY THOSE OF US WHO REPRESENT MORE, MORE STUDENTS IN THE DISTRICT IN THE STATE SHOULD HAVE MORE WEIGHT IN--I AGREE.

I THINK IT ALSO IT ADDS TO DIVERSITY.

YOU KNOW, WE ARE A MAJORITY STUDENT OF COLOR DISTRICT, AND SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR VOICE IS WELL REPRESENTED THERE.

SO I AGREE, AND I WOULD JUST LIKE TO PUT FORWARD A REMINDER THAT WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT WHEN WE'RE TALKING ABOUT VOTING, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT VOTING ON POSITIONS THAT WSSDA WOULD SUPPORT OR NOT SUPPORT AS THEY'RE DOING THEIR LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY.

SO WE'RE NOT ACTUALLY DECIDING ANYTHING OTHER THAN WHAT WOULD THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS ORGANIZATIONS REPRESENTING THEM SUPPORT IN THEIR OWN ADVOCACY.

ABSOLUTELY. THANK YOU FOR THAT CLARIFICATION.

THESE ARE POSITIONS THAT THE WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION WILL ADOPT, WHICH WILL ALLOW THEM TO ADVOCATE IN OLYMPIA ON BEHALF OF THE ENTIRE STATE SCHOOL DISTRICTS, AND SINCE WE GO AND WE GET TO VOTE, WE WERE TRYING SOMETHING A LITTLE BIT NEW HERE, TALKING ABOUT THIS MORE AT THE BOARD SO THAT WE'RE MORE ENGAGED AS A BOARD.

OFTEN IT WOULD BE ME OR THE PRESIDENT GOING AND MAKING SOME EVALUATIONS ON THE PROPOSALS COMING FORWARD IN COLLABORATION, BUT I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE TALK ABOUT THIS SO THAT WE KNOW THAT THERE'S QUITE A PROCESS AND A LOT OF WORK THAT GOES IN ON THIS.

THE OTHER ONE THAT IS OF INTEREST, A PROPOSAL THAT WE PUT FORWARD HAS TO DO WITH DIVERSITY, AND THERE'S A THERE WAS APPARENTLY A NUMBER OF BOARDS THAT PUT FORWARD A PROPOSAL ON THIS, AND THE RESOLUTIONS COMMITTEE DECIDED TO CREATE THEIR OWN PROPOSAL.

YEAH, I KNOW. SORRY, NANCY. THAT'S REALLY SMALL.

THEIR OWN PROPOSAL.

I'VE GOT ELECTRONICALLY THAT KIND OF PUTTING THEM ALL TOGETHER TO REFLECT IT.

I PERSONALLY LIKE OURS BETTER, AND I WOULD THINK THAT WE OUGHT TO STICK WITH WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS BEING THE FIRST, AND THERE'S SOME RATIONALE ON THAT ONE, TOO.

[00:25:01]

ANY THOUGHTS ON THAT? SO I AM ATTENDING THE WSSDA 22ND AND 23RD IS THIS PHRASING OF THE DIVERSITY ONE THEIRS AND NOT OURS? YEAH, ACTUALLY I'VE GOT THAT.

SO WHAT THE OUR PROPOSAL, THE CURRENT STATEMENT IS WAS TO BELIEVES IN UNIVERSAL RESPECT FOR ALL PEOPLE.

FURTHER, SCHOOL DIRECTORS SHOULD PRESERVE AND PROMOTE RESPECT FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL AND AFFIRM THAT DIVERSITY IS VALUABLE BY ADOPTING AND PERIODICALLY REVIEWING THE BOARD'S POLICIES RELATIVE TO STUDENT AND STAFF DIVERSITY.

THAT'S WHAT'S CURRENTLY WE PROPOSED AS A BOARD.

ALONG WE SAID JUST WSSDA BELIEVES THAT DIVERSITY IS AN IMPORTANT AND VALUABLE PART OF THE LEARNING AND WORK ENVIRONMENTS IN OUR SCHOOLS.

TO THIS END, SCHOOL DIRECTORS SHOULD ADOPT AND PERIODICALLY REVIEW THE BOARD POLICIES WHICH PROMOTE AND PROTECT DIVERSITY THROUGH AFFIRMING THE HUMANITY OF EACH PERSON AND SUPPORTING THE SAFETY, DIGNITY, ACCESS, BELONGING AND SUCCESS OF ALL PRESENT AND FUTURE STUDENTS, FAMILIES AND STAFF.

I LIKE THAT ONE BECAUSE WE PUT A LOT OF THOUGHT INTO IT AND OUR BOARD SUBMITTED IT ALONG WITH SHORELINE, THE PROPOSED STATEMENT THAT IS A COMPILATION OF A NUMBER OF PROPOSALS THAT THE RESOLUTION COMMITTEE PUT FORWARD, MERELY SAYS WSSDA BELIEVES THAT LEARNING STANDARDS, CURRICULUM AND SCHOOL DISTRICT POLICIES AND PRACTICES SHOULD BE INCLUSIVE AND REFLECT THE INTEGRATION OF EXPERIENCES, CONTRIBUTIONS AND HISTORIES OF THE DIVERSE COMMUNITIES THAT HELPED FORM WASHINGTON STATE, THE UNITED STATES AND THE GREATER GLOBAL COMMUNITY.

WE BELIEVE STUDENTS NEED TO HAVE THAT OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN FROM AND ABOUT DIVERSE COMMUNITIES AND VOICES, BROADENING THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THE INTERCONNECTEDNESS OF US ALL. I MEAN, IT'S OKAY.

[INAUDIBLE] THIS IS SOMETHING FOR US TO TALK ABOUT.

THAT'S WHAT'S OUT THERE. THAT'S WHAT'S IN THE DISCUSSION RIGHT NOW, AND WE HAVE SOME RATIONALE TO KEEP OURS, AND SO IT'S JUST TO THINK ABOUT AS WE GO.

WHAT IS THE REASONING BEHIND CHANGING THE ONE THAT'S CURRENTLY IN PLACE? WELL, LET'S SEE.

I WILL TELL YOU. ARE THESE ATTEMPTING TO MAKE MAKE IT MORE INCLUSIONARY? YEAH, THEY WERE TRYING TO DO THAT.

LET ME JUST GET TO THE RIGHT PAGE AND I CAN TELL YOU THAT REAL QUICK.

STAFF, AND SO THE IDEA HERE IS SO THAT WE HAVE BROAD AWARENESS OF THE PROPOSALS THAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THROUGHOUT THE STATE. JUST A MINUTE.

I CAN GET TO YOU.

IT IS, OKAY, SO THE RATIONALE FROM THE COMMITTEE WAS AFTER REVIEWING ALL THE SUBMISSIONS ON DIVERSITY, THE COMMITTEE HAS AMENDED THE AMENDED THE CURRENT DIVERSITY STATEMENT TO BE INCLUSIVE AND NOT LIMITING THE COMMITTEE ALSO BELIEVES THE STATEMENT SHOULD NOT BE LIMITED TO THE LEARNING CATEGORY, BUT SHOULD APPLY TO ALL ASPECTS OF WHAT WE DO AS SCHOOL DIRECTORS.

I THINK THERE'S GOOD INTENT THERE, BUT I THINK OUR STATEMENT HITS THE MARK BETTER.

WELL, THE CURRENT ONE I FEEL IS PRETTY UNIVERSAL, AND.

I GUESS OUR STATEMENT I LIKE BETTER THAN.

THIS FULLY INCLUSIVE PROPOSED STATEMENT.

THE CONCERN IS ALWAYS IF YOU KEEP NAMING THINGS AND NAMING THINGS AND NAMING THINGS, THEN YOU LOSE SIGHT OF THE PRINCIPLE AND YOU GET STUCK IN THE WEEDS, AND THEN YOU ALWAYS WORRY ABOUT WHAT DID I LEAVE IN, WHAT DID I LEAVE OUT? AND INSTEAD JUST.

I THINK A GENERAL DIVERSITY STATEMENT IS BEST.

SO I DON'T WANT TO MINIMIZE THIS, BUT I THINK THERE'RE MORE IMPORTANT RESOLUTIONS ON HERE THAT HAVE A MORE IMPORTANT IMPACT, PARTICULARLY THE REDEFINITION OF BASIC EDUCATION, I THINK IS REALLY KEY AS WE WORK ON ADVOCATING FOR BETTER FUNDING FROM THE STATE. PART OF THE I THINK AMBIGUITY THAT CURRENTLY EXISTS IN THE DEFINITION OF BASIC EDUCATION DOESN'T EXPLICITLY CALL OUT SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING, AND BY NOT CALLING IT OUT EXPLICITLY, THERE ARE THOSE LEGISLATORS WHO COULD CLAIM THAT IT IS NOT THEIR RESPONSIBILITY.

WHEN THE CONSTITUTION, STATE CONSTITUTION SAYS WE HAVE TO AMPLY FUND THAT THE STATE HAS TO AMPLY FUND BASIC EDUCATION, THAT THEY WOULD SAY THAT DOESN'T INCLUDE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL, SO THEY DON'T HAVE TO GIVE US WHAT WE REALLY NEED TO BE ADDRESSING THE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL NEEDS OF OUR KIDS AND SO I THINK WE'RE TALKING ABOUT NUMBER FIVE, RIGHT? YES. I THINK EXPANDING THE DEFINITION OF BASIC EDUCATION TO MAKE IT VERY EXPLICIT THAT IT INCLUDES SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING IS VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE

[00:30:03]

IT IMPACTS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY FOR FUNDING US APPROPRIATELY, AND TO ME, AS I WAS READING THROUGH THEM, THIS ONE STOOD OUT TO ME AS A REALLY IMPORTANT ONE.

IT WAS ALSO SOMETHING WHEN I MET WITH SENATOR [INAUDIBLE] THAT HE POINTED OUT THAT THERE'S A BELIEF THAT BASIC EDUCATION DOESN'T INCLUDE THAT IN TERMS OF THE STATE'S RESPONSIBILITY.

SO I WOULD REALLY WANT TO SEE WSSDA PUSH FOR THAT AND FOR US TO ADVOCATE STRONGLY FOR THAT BECAUSE, IT SEEMS SIMPLE, BUT IT HAS HUGE IMPLICATIONS FOR THE FUNDING THAT WE NEED.

I AGREE.

SO FOR THIS PARTICULAR DOCUMENT, I CAN TELL YOU REALLY QUICKLY WHICH EIGHT WE PUT EIGHT PROPOSALS IN THERE AND THEN WE CAN GO BACK, AND SO [INAUDIBLE] AS A BOARD, WE SUBMITTED EIGHT OF THEM AND I BELIEVE THEY ALL HAVE A DUE PASS EXCEPT FOR THAT DIVERSITY ONE, AND SO LET ME JUST GET TO. IT WAS AMPLY FUNDING STAFFING LEVELS WHERE 26.

YES. SO IF YOU WHAT I'M DOING, I'M LOOKING AT THE HANDBOOK.

SO I'M SKIPPING, I'M CHEATING, I'M MAKING IT EASY FOR MYSELF.

I'M LOOKING AT THE HANDBOOK BECAUSE YOU HAVE THE LINK TO THE HANDBOOK ALSO, AND SO THOSE NUMBER 26 THAT WE SUBMITTED AMPLY FUND STAFFING LEVELS AND IT'S RECOMMENDED DO PASS BY THE RESOLUTIONS COMMITTEE.

SO THIS IS JUST WHAT THE ASSEMBLY IS GOING TO SEE.

THE SECOND ONE WAS A FEDERAL POVERTY RATE CALCULATION, AND THAT WAS ALSO DO PASS.

THAT'S NUMBER 31? AND THAT'S NUMBER 31.

NUMBER 32 AND I CAN UPDATE THIS.

I MEANT TO DO THAT TO COMBINE THE TWO, BUT IT WAS A LITTLE.

YEAH NUMBER 32, LANGUAGE ACCESS.

WE ALSO DID THAT ONE THAT'S GOT A DUE PASS RECOMMENDATION.

NUMBER 34 PEDESTRIAN BICYCLE SAFETY THAT ALSO HAS A DUE PASS.

PREVENTING SELF-HARM AND SUICIDE, ALSO A DO PASS, AND THAT WAS THE OTHERS WERE ALONG WITH THE SHORELINE SCHOOL DISTRICT.

THIS WAS ALSO SUBMITTED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE SPOKANE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND SHORELINE.

THAT WAS NUMBER 35.

NUMBER 36, PREVENTING SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND OVERDOSE OVERDOSES ALSO HAS A DO PASS, AND THAT WAS ALSO WITH SHORELINE AND SPOKANE.

NUMBER 42, WHICH WAS DIVERSITY.

THAT WAS A DO NOT PASS FOR THE REASONS WE JUST DISCUSSED THAT THEY, AND WHOOPS, [INAUDIBLE] WHERE'S THE NEXT ONE AND OH, THAT'S IT.

SO THE ONE ABOUT BASIC EDUCATION WASN'T ON THAT LIST? NO, I JUST WENT THROUGH THOSE THAT WE DID SUBMIT.

THE ONE THAT WAS SUBMITTED, THE EXPANDING BASIC EDUCATION WAS SUBMITTED BY [INAUDIBLE] WAIT.

NOPE, NOPE, NOPE IT WASN'T. HOLD ON.

SO I FIND THIS REALLY FUN.

I MEAN, YOU GUYS [INAUDIBLE] [CHUCKLING].

SO THANK YOU FOR DEDICATING THE NEXT HOUR OF OUR MEETING TO THIS.

SO JUST A MINUTE. I JUST WANT TO TELL YOU.

WELL, UNDER THAT ONE, IT SAYS PROPOSE REVISION.

YEAH OKAY SO THAT WAS OKAY. SO THE PROPOSED REVISION IS JUST A DISCUSSION, A COMMITTEE DISCUSSION OF A COLLABORATIVE.

SO NOT NECESSARILY DOING THAT.

WE CAN DECIDE THE RESOLUTIONS COMMITTEE SUBMITTED THIS.

SO THE RESOLUTIONS COMMITTEE SUGGESTED THAT EXPANDING BASIC EDUCATION AND TO SAY EXPANDING BASIC EDUCATION, THE PROPOSAL WOULD BE WSSDA BELIEVES LOCAL SCHOOL BOARDS SHOULD INCORPORATE INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS RELATED TO SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING, ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND RESPECTFUL ENGAGEMENT WITH YOUR COMMUNITY AND ONLINE AS PART OF BASIC EDUCATION, AND SO THAT WOULD AMEND IT, AND SO THAT WAS AN AMENDMENT THAT THE RESOLUTIONS COMMITTEE BROUGHT FORWARD.

THE DISCUSSION ON SOME OF THE REVISIONS THAT MAY COME FROM THE FLOOR IS THE INTENT TO EXPAND WHAT IS BASIC EDUCATION REMOVES THE CORE STATEMENT.

THAT WSSDA BELIEVES THIS SHOULD BE PART OF THE DEFINITION OF BASIC EDUCATION.

OKAY. WSSDA BELIEVES THEY WANT TO INCLUDE CIVIC EDUCATION IN THEIR ENGAGEMENT AND CITIZENSHIP.

[00:35:02]

WE'LL HAVE TO TAKE A LOOK AT THAT ONE A LITTLE CLOSER.

SO THAT'S AN AMENDMENT THAT MAY COME FORWARD.

RIGHT NOW, THE PROPOSAL TO EXPAND BASIC EDUCATION IS COMING FORWARD FROM THE RESOLUTIONS COMMITTEE, BUT IT DOESN'T INCLUDE THE AMENDMENT WOULD BE TO I NCLUDE CITIZENSHIP BACK IN THERE INSTEAD OF TAKING IT OUT.

OKAY. WHICH I THINK IS FINE.

YEAH, I FEEL LIKE RESPECTFUL ENGAGEMENT HAS A BIG OVERLAP WITH SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING.

I MEAN, AT LEAST AS I'VE SEEN IT IN THE CLASSROOM AND IT DOESN'T INCLUDE CIVIC EDUCATION HERE, YOU KNOW, CITIZENSHIP OR WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT, ALTHOUGH I BELIEVE THERE'S A STATE REQUIREMENT THAT WE GIVE OUR KIDS CIVIC EDUCATION AND THAT CIVICS IS PART OF THE CURRICULUM AT SOME LEVEL LOOKING BACK.

HIGH SCHOOL. YEAH.

[INAUDIBLE] I'M REALLY LOOKING AT THE STAFF IN THE BACK.

I'M GOING TO READ YOU THE COMMITTEE RATIONALE.

A VOTE FOR THIS PROPOSAL WOULD AMEND THE CURRENT POSITION.

THE RESOLUTIONS COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS A REVISION TO THIS POSITION TO REFLECT THE DEBATE AT GENERAL ASSEMBLY 2022, WHERE DELEGATES VOICED CONCERNED VOICED CONCERN THAT THE TERM CITIZENSHIP COULD NOT BE DEFINED AND MAY BE SEEN AS INCLUSIVE BECAUSE A NUMBER OF DISTRICTS WERE SERVED STUDENTS AND FAMILIES WHO ARE NOT US CITIZENS.

YEAH, WELL, I THINK THEN WE NEED TO OR WSSDA NEEDS TO ARTICULATE EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS THEY MEANT BY CITIZENSHIP.

BECAUSE RESPECT AGAIN, I WOULD JUST SAY RESPECTFUL ENGAGEMENT WITHIN YOUR COMMUNITY.

THAT IS NOT CITIZENSHIP OR WHAT I THINK OF AS CITIZENSHIP.

SO AND IT SEEMS LIKE IT'S AN OVERLAP WITH SEL, LIKE I SAID.

SO A COUPLE OF WEEKS. LET ME LET ME ASK YOU THE LOGISTICS.

LAST TIME WE SORT OF TOOK TURNS PASSING THE BATON THROUGH THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY SCHEDULE.

DO YOU WANT TO DO IT THAT WAY AGAIN? I THINK SO. IT'S LIKE SO I DEFINITELY CAN CAN START AND THEN WE CAN JUST COORDINATE ON WHEN THE CREDENTIAL IS PASSED.

YEAH, WE CAN DO THAT ON AN EMAIL BECAUSE IT'S JUST LOGISTICS.

YEAH. SUPER EASY.

OKAY, AND THAT'S, AND IT'S GOING TO BE EXCITING.

I'M SORRY THAT I CAN'T BE THERE IN PERSON, BUT THAT'S THE DIGITAL WORLD WE LIVE IN, [INAUDIBLE] IT'S HYBRID, AND I THINK IT'S GOING TO BE A REALLY SUCCESSFUL HYBRID.

OKAY. SO THAT'S WHAT WE'VE GOT RIGHT NOW.

NO, THAT'S IN NOVEMBER.

THIS ONE'S IN SPOKANE.

ANY OTHER COMMENTS? AND IF YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE THIS WHAT THIS IS REALLY THIS IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT'S ALL THE WORK THAT GOES INTO, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE WHEN THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION STARTS AND THERE'S BILLS AND YOU'RE DOING THIS COLLABORATIVE WORK WITH WSSDA AND THE OTHER GROUPS THAT I'LL COLLABORATE, THE ADVOCACY COMMITTEE REPRESENTS THE STATEMENTS AND THE POSITIONS OF WSSDA, AND SO THIS ALLOWS THEM TO HAVE A POSITION ON THINGS THAT COME UP BECAUSE THE POLICY HAS BEEN DEFINED THROUGHOUT THE STATE.

SO THERE WE GO.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP.

WE REALLY WE APPRECIATE YOUR LEADERSHIP SO MUCH ON BRINGING US THIS AND HELPING US UNDERSTAND WHAT'S GOING ON AND WHAT WE CAN DO.

HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS. THANK YOU.

OKAY, SO NEXT WE HAVE BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS.

[13. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS]

WE'LL START WITH DIRECTOR SMITH.

I'M EXCITED THAT WE'RE STARTING A NEW SCHOOL YEAR AGAIN.

I'VE ALREADY GOTTEN TO SEE SOME OF THE KIDS OUT ON THE FIELDS THIS YEAR PLAYING FOOTBALL.

THEY'RE ALL VERY EXCITED TO BE OUT THERE.

IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE TIMES OF YEAR TO SEE ALL THE KIDS COMING BACK OUT, HAVING FUN, GETTING TO SEE THEIR TEAMMATES, GETTING COACHED UP, HAVING A GOOD TIME OUT THERE.

SO I'M VERY EXCITED FOR THAT.

I'M GLAD I FULLY BELIEVE THIS WILL BE AN EXCELLENT SCHOOL YEAR FOR THE DISTRICT AND I'M EXCITED FOR THAT AS WELL TO SEE WHERE THIS YEAR TAKES US, AND I ALSO DID WANT TO THANK I'M SORRY THAT I DO NOT REMEMBER YOUR NAME, BUT THE INDIVIDUAL.

WHAT WAS THAT? JERRY.

JERRY WHO READ PART OF THE CONSTITUTION TO US.

I DO THINK THAT IS OUR FOUNDING DOCUMENTS ARE IMPORTANT THING FOR EVERYBODY TO HAVE A CHANCE TO LOOK AT.

I DIDN'T REALLY LOOK AT THEM UNTIL LATER IN MY LIFE AND REALLY TRIED TO DIGEST THEM A LITTLE BIT, AND, YOU KNOW, ONCE YOU GET A CHANCE TO READ THOSE THINGS, YOU'RE LIKE, OH, NOW I KIND OF SEE WHERE PEOPLE WERE COMING FROM AND WHATNOT.

SO IT'S GOOD TO KNOW OUR HISTORY.

SO I DO APPRECIATE YOU ENTERING THAT INTO OUR RECORD, AND WITH THAT, I JUST WISH EVERYONE A GOOD YEAR.

YEAH I ALWAYS SAY MY FAVORITE THING AS BEING A BOARD MEMBER IS GOING TO GRADUATIONS BECAUSE THAT'S THE CULMINATION OF EVERYTHING WE DO IN THE DISTRICT, BUT MY SECOND FAVORITE THING IS THE FIRST COUPLE OF DAYS OF SCHOOL BECAUSE IT'S SO MUCH FUN TO SEE THE KIDS OUT THERE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT GETTING INTO SCHOOL, AND YOU CAN SEE FROM THE SLIDESHOW AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MEETING, A LOT OF REALLY GOOD THINGS ARE GOING ON.

SO I THANK EVERYBODY THAT HAS MADE THIS A REALLY SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL OPENING YEAR.

[00:40:04]

SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

THAT'S ALL I HAVE. ECHOING THAT THE EXCITEMENT OF THE FIRST YEAR, AND WHAT I'M REALLY EXCITED IS THE CALENDARS ARE OUT.

OH, I WAS SO WORRIED BECAUSE SEPTEMBER IS DONE AND SO I'M REALLY EXCITED.

IT'S BEAUTIFUL ARTWORK AND I'M JUST REALLY EXCITED TO HAVE THAT ON MY FRIDGE THIS NEXT YEAR, AND I GREW UP WITH SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK, SO YEAH, JUST SAY IT.

YEAH, I'VE GOT IT. YEAH I HAD IT MEMORIZED FROM THE EARLY TIMES.

WELL, I TOO AM EXCITED ABOUT THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR, BUT OF COURSE, AS A PARENT WITH A KID STILL IN SCHOOLS, I ALSO STRUGGLE WITH SOME OF THE FRUSTRATIONS AND I HAD I CAN'T EVEN REMEMBER WHAT THE CRISIS WAS, BUT IT WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE AND MY KID TEXTED ME LIKE, YOU HAVE TO HELP ME NOW, AND IT WAS LIKE, NOBODY'S AT WORK.

I CAN'T THERE'S NOBODY TO CALL RIGHT NOW.

SO WE'LL HAVE TO WAIT TILL THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL FOR THESE TO WORK OUT YOUR SCHEDULE OR WHATEVER IT WAS, BUT I THINK EVERYTHING'S SMOOTHING OUT FOR HIM, AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO MY FIRST DAY IN THIS YEAR IN THE CLASSROOM TOMORROW AS A VOLUNTEER, A NEW CROP OF FOURTH GRADERS. SO I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT.

I HAVE BEEN DOING A LITTLE BIT OF READING ON AI BECAUSE I KNOW THAT'S SOMETHING THAT'S INTERESTING TO US AND I KNOW WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A STUDY SESSION ON IT, BUT I WANTED TO I CAME ACROSS A SOMEBODY MUST HAVE RECOMMENDED IT TO ME.

I DIDN'T JUST RANDOMLY FIND THIS, BUT IT'S A WHITE PAPER RELEASED BY THE RANKING MEMBER, REPUBLICAN BILL CASSIDY OF THE HEALTH, EDUCATION, LABOR AND PENSIONS COMMITTEE, TALKING ABOUT AI, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND THE PLUSES AND MINUSES SUCH AS THEY'VE DISCOVERED SO FAR AND THINGS THAT WE HAVE TO WE MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN AND IN AREAS OF HEALTH, EDUCATION AND LABOR IN PARTICULAR, AND IT WAS A VERY INTERESTING, VERY WELL WRITTEN FOR THE LAYMAN LAYPERSON, KIND OF SOME OF THE ISSUES.

I THINK THEY'RE STILL A LITTLE A LITTLE VAGUE ON HOW IT'S GOING TO IMPACT EDUCATION.

THERE WERE SOME VERY INTERESTING ELEMENTS HAVING TO DO WITH HEALTH IN TERMS OF PHARMACEUTICALS AND DRUG DEVELOPMENT AND DIAGNOSIS. WE CAN REALLY EMPLOY AI IN THOSE AREAS PRETTY WELL.

SO ANYWAY, I DID WANT TO KIND OF DRAW PEOPLE'S ATTENTION TO IT BECAUSE IT WAS INTERESTING AND IT WAS WELL WRITTEN FOR NORMAL PEOPLE LIKE MYSELF, AND ALSO, YOU KNOW, THIS IS AN AREA THAT BOTH SIDES OF THE AISLE ARE INTERESTED IN, JUST LIKE A LOT OF AREAS THAT THEY DO.

THERE'S A LOT OF WORK THAT THEY DO THAT DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS WORK TOGETHER AND ACTUALLY SOLVE PROBLEMS AND PASS LEGISLATION, AND I HOPE THAT WE CAN CONTINUE TO LOOK FOR THOSE OPPORTUNITIES.

IT'S NOT ALWAYS A FIGHT, I THINK, AND I HOPE MAYBE I HOPE MAYBE I'M NAIVE, BUT IT'S NOT ALWAYS A FIGHT. IT'S THERE'S A LOT OF INTEREST IN AREAS THAT AFFECT US HERE IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND SO WELCOME BACK.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

I HOPE EVERYBODY HAD A GREAT SUMMER.

I DON'T KNOW WHY EVERY YEAR IT SEEMS TO BE GOING FASTER AND FASTER.

LOVE THE OPENING OF SCHOOL.

THANK YOU FOR THAT SLIDESHOW.

IT'S REALLY CAPTURED.

I, I SENSE FROM TALKING TO PEOPLE THAT THERE'S A LOT OF EXCITEMENT.

I THINK WE'RE JUST ABOUT BACK TO A REGULAR SCHOOL YEAR.

I HOPE THAT'S TRUE.

ONE THING I WANTED TO MENTION THAT I DIDN'T MENTION IS THAT WE DID HAVE ONE WRITTEN PUBLIC COMMENT AND IT WAS FROM A MATH TEACHER WHO WAS CONCERNED WITH THERE SEEMED TO BE QUESTIONS ABOUT RESOURCES FOR THE MATH TEACHERS, BOTH TECH RESOURCES AND OTHERS, AND HOW DECISIONS ARE MADE FOR THEIR AVAILABILITY OR THEIR LACK OF AVAILABILITY.

SO I'M LOOKING TO DR.

MINER TO FOLLOW UP AND LET THE BOARD KNOW WHAT YOU DISCOVER AND TO MAKE SURE, OF COURSE, I KNOW YOU WILL FOLLOW UP WITH THE TEACHER AS WELL AND MAKE SURE THAT'S CLEARED UP.

ABSOLUTELY. OKAY.

OTHER THAN THAT, I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING STUDENT ADVISORS.

AS I SAID, I MET THEM AT THE I MET THE WHOLE STUDENT ADVISORY SUPERINTENDENTS COMMITTEE AND THIS IS A

[00:45:09]

DYNAMIC GROUP OF KIDS WHO ARE ALL EXCITED AND WANT TO BE INVOLVED, AND I THINK IT WILL JUST BE A WONDERFUL YEAR WITH THEIR INPUT, AND I ALSO LIKE THE CHANGES THAT DR.

MINER HAD SUGGESTED WITH THEM, AND THEY SEEM TO RESONATE TO THEM FOR THEM TO MAKE PRESENTATIONS FOR US.

SO I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT.

THANK YOU, AND I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO ADD FROM MY INITIAL COMMENTS.

THEN THE LAST ITEM, AS ALWAYS, IS ARE THERE ANY ITEMS FOR FUTURE DISCUSSION THAT WE HAVEN'T YET PUT ON OUR MASSIVE STUDY SESSION CALENDAR?

[14. ITEMS FOR FUTURE CONSIDERATION OR INFORMATION]

I THINK I DID SEND ANOTHER ONE.

DID I SEND ANOTHER ONE AFTER OUR BOARD RETREAT SAYING, OH, BUT I THINK IT WAS ALREADY ON SOMETHING, BUT IS THERE ANYTHING THAT WE REALLY HAVEN'T GOTTEN ON THERE? BECAUSE WE DID A GREAT JOB AT OUR RETREAT.

WE GOOD? OKAY WITH THAT BEING SAID, NOW ADJOURNED.
