[2. ROLL CALL-6:31 pm (ALL TIMES ARE ESTIMATED)]

[00:00:09]

I'LL DO A ROLL CALL VOTE.

ALTHOUGH TWO OF OUR MEMBERS WERE TRYING TO GET UP ON ZOOM AND I'M NOT SURE THAT THEY WILL BE ABLE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT.

BUT WHEN THEY COME ON, WE WILL KNOW.

BUT ARE THEY ON? OKAY, SO LET'S START WITH DIRECTOR NOBLE.

DIRECTOR KILGORE.

DIRECTOR KATIMS. KEITH, CAN YOU HEAR US? HE UNMUTED SO.

KEITH, CAN YOU INDICATE THAT YOU CAN HEAR US? OKAY. THANK YOU DIRECTOR SMITH.

WE SEE YOUR HAND UP, SO WE'RE HOPING THAT THAT MEANS YOU CAN HEAR US EVEN IF WE CAN'T HEAR YOU YET.

DIRECTOR CHASE, CAN WE ASK YOU FOR THE SAME? CAN YOU GIVE US A RAISED HAND OR A THUMBS UP? PERFECT. SO THEY CAN HEAR US AT THIS POINT, BUT WE CAN'T HEAR THEM.

SO THAT MEANS THAT ALL FIVE OF US ARE HERE.

GREAT START.

AND I'LL ASK DR.

[3. LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT-6:32 pm]

MINER TO DO THE LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT.

THANK YOU SO MUCH, DR.

KATIMS. WE ACKNOWLEDGE THE ORIGINAL INHABITANTS OF THIS PLACE, THE SNOHOMISH PEOPLE AND THEIR SUCCESSORS, THE TULALIP TRIBES, WHO SINCE TIME IMMEMORIAL HAVE TAKEN CARE OF, HUNTED, FISHED AND GATHERED ON THESE LANDS.

WE RESPECT THEIR SOVEREIGNTY, THEIR RIGHT TO SELF-DETERMINATION, AND WE HONOR THEIR SACRED SPIRITUAL CONNECTION WITH THE LAND AND WATER.

BY ACKNOWLEDGING THESE HOMELANDS, WE COMMIT TO WORKING WITH TRIBAL NATIONS TO FURTHER THE EDUCATION AIMS THEY HAVE IDENTIFIED IN OUR CLASSROOMS AND SCHOOLS.

THANK YOU. NOW, IF YOU WILL RISE AND JOIN ME IN SAYING THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG.

[4. FLAG SALUTE-6:33 pm]

I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.

OR RAISING YOUR HAND ON ZOOM.

ALL THOSE OPPOSED SAY NAY.

ANY ABSTENTIONS? GREAT AND TONIGHT'S AGENDA IS APPROVED AS PRESENTED.

[6. SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS 6:35 pm]

WELL, I'M SORRY FOR THE UNUSUAL START TO OUR EVENING, BUT I COULDN'T BE MORE THRILLED TO INTRODUCE OUR STUDENT PRESENTERS THIS EVENING AND TO WELCOME THE TEAM FROM MADRONA.

SO PLEASE COME ON FORWARD.

AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING BOTH A STUDENT PRESENTATION AND THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN UPDATE FROM MADRONA.

GOOD EVENING, DR.

MINER AND BOARD OF DIRECTORS.

MY NAME IS REINA HALL, AND I'M THE ASB PRESIDENT AT MADRONA.

THIS IS SADIE RENICK AND SHE'S OUR ASB COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR.

AND THIS IS TOM GORNEY AND OUR PRINCIPAL, DR.

CASTILLEJA. NEXT SLIDE.

AND NEXT SLIDE.

SERVICE TO OTHERS IS THE RENT YOU PAY FOR YOUR ROOM HERE ON EARTH.

MUHAMMAD ALI. WHAT WE DO FOR OURSELVES DIES WITH US.

WHAT WE DO FOR OTHERS.

AND THE WORLD REMAINS AND IS IMMORTAL.

ALBERT PINE. NEXT SLIDE.

SYAYƏʔ OUR SIP GOAL OR OUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PROGRESS IS A SENSE OF BELONGING.

THIS IS FOR OUR SCHOOL WIDE SYAYƏʔ.

SO SYAYƏʔ MEANS FRIENDS OR FAMILY IN LUSHOOTSEED.

SO SYAYƏʔ IS BASICALLY WHERE WE TAKE STUDENTS ALL THE WAY FROM KINDERGARTEN TO EIGHTH GRADE, AND WE SEPARATE THEM INTO DIFFERENT CLASSROOMS AND SMALL GROUPS FOR ABOUT AN

[00:05:02]

HOUR SO THEY'RE IN A DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENT THAN THEY'RE USED TO.

THERE ARE A TOTAL OF 22 GROUPS AND IN THESE SYAYƏʔ EACH MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT HAS A JOB.

SO THESE JOBS ARE BASICALLY BECOMING A TEACHER FOR A DAY.

SO THE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE THE LEADERS TOWARDS THE YOUNGER STUDENTS SO THAT THEY CAN SEE, OH, THIS IS WHAT MIDDLE SCHOOL IS ABOUT.

AND THE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS ALSO GET A CHANCE TO BE IN A LEADERSHIP ROLE.

SO THE LESSONS WE FOCUS ON IN SYAYƏʔ ARE OUR PROJECTS AND GOALS FOR THE YEAR.

SO ONE OF THE PROJECTS WE'VE BEEN DOING IS JUST MAKING SURE THAT STUDENTS KNOW WHAT RECYCLING IS AND WHAT COMPOSTING IS SO THAT THEY'RE MORE AWARE OF WHAT THEY'RE DOING IN OUR WORLD. AND MOST OF ALL, IT JUST HELPS BUILD COMMUNITY.

AND IN ASSEMBLIES OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL ASB MEMBERS HAVE BEEN LEADING SOME ASSEMBLIES THIS YEAR AND WE'VE BEEN TEACHING THEM ABOUT CHARACTER ATTRIBUTES AND WE'VE BEEN ANNOUNCING THOSE IN OUR DAILY MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS.

NEXT SLIDE.

OKAY, SO MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS, LIKE I SAID, THEY BECOME THE TEACHERS.

SO THEY GET TO TEACH YOUNGER STUDENTS AND WE ALWAYS GO AND PICK UP THE KINDERGARTNERS.

THAT WAY THEY DON'T GET LOST ON THE WAY TO THEIR CLASSROOMS. AND WE ALWAYS MEET IN THE GYM.

AND OF COURSE, THE FIRST SYAYƏʔ WAS A BIT CHAOTIC, BUT WE ALWAYS FIGURE IT OUT.

AND THERE ARE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS HOLDING UP BIG POSTERS WITH NUMBERS ON THEM AND LITTLE KIDS KNOW WHAT THEIR NUMBER IS, SO THEY ALWAYS GO AND LINE UP WITH THOSE MIDDLE SCHOOLERS AND IT'S JUST REALLY, REALLY CUTE.

BUT MOST OF ALL, IT JUST SHOWS THEM WHAT BEING A MIDDLE SCHOOLER IS ABOUT.

SO IT GETS THEM EXCITED TO BE IN AN OLDER AND MORE LEADERSHIP ROLE.

NEXT SLIDE. OKAY SO AS YOU GUYS KNOW, THE PANDEMIC HAPPENED.

SO WE HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO DO THIS FOR A FEW YEARS, BUT THIS YEAR WE WERE FINALLY ABLE TO RESUME THIS KIND OF ACTIVITY.

AND IT'S JUST BEEN AWESOME BECAUSE WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO RECREATE THIS COMMUNITY THAT WE ONCE HAD.

AND LIKE REINA SAID, IT WAS PRETTY CHAOTIC THE FIRST TIME.

BUT I FEEL LIKE AS WE WENT ON AND WE'VE HAD ABOUT THREE NOW, I FEEL LIKE WE'VE FINALLY GOTTEN TO BE ABLE TO KNOW EACH OTHER.

AND WE'VE BUILT JUST LIKE THESE LITTLE COMMUNITIES AND WE'RE ABLE TO TALK TO EACH OTHER ABOUT THINGS.

AND I FEEL LIKE IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO HAVE THAT IN A K THROUGH EIGHT SCHOOL SINCE WE'RE ALL SO DIVERSE IN AGE.

NEXT SLIDE. SO ONE THING ONE OTHER THING THAT WE'VE BEEN LEARNING ABOUT IN SYAYƏʔ IS WE'VE BEEN TEACHING THE YOUNGER STUDENTS ABOUT WHAT JUNETEENTH AND PRIDE MONTH IS. JUNETEENTH IS A VERY IMPORTANT HOLIDAY THAT'S BEING CELEBRATED FOR THE FIRST TIME HERE IN WASHINGTON.

AND IT WAS THE EMANCIPATION OF SLAVES.

AND IN ON JUNE 19TH IN GALVESTON, TEXAS, THEY HEARD FOR THE FIRST TIME THAT THEY HAD BEEN FREED.

THE SLAVES HAD NOT KNOWN THAT THEY WERE FREED A YEAR AGO, AND THEY'VE BEEN STAYING SLAVES FOR THAT LONG AND THEY HADN'T KNOWN ABOUT IT.

SO IT'S LIKE THIS BIG CELEBRATION AND IT'S BEING CELEBRATED FOR THE FIRST TIME, AS I SAID HERE IN WASHINGTON.

AND PRIDE MONTH IS THE WHOLE MONTH OF JUNE.

SO PRIDE MONTH IS FOR THE LGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY AND IT CELEBRATES EQUAL JUSTICE AND OPPORTUNITY FOR EVERYBODY.

SO IT'S JUST REALLY MAKING SURE THAT THE YOUNGER KIDS ARE AWARE OF THIS.

AND WE'VE BEEN ANNOUNCING THE DISTRICT EQUITY THEMES IN OUR MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS.

SO THE YOUNGER KIDS HERE, LIKE THE DISTRICT EQUITY THEME FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH IS BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.

OR THIS YEAR IT'S WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH OR MONTH, NOT YEAR, THIS MONTH IT'S WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH.

SO WE'VE BEEN SHARING QUOTES EVERY DAY FROM DIFFERENT WOMEN IN POWERS OF OR POSITIONS OF POWER.

THAT WAY, YOUNGER STUDENTS AND STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE SCHOOL REALLY CAN JUST HEAR THESE AMAZING QUOTES FROM THESE AMAZING AND STRONG WOMEN THAT JUST HAVE MADE THEIR WAY THROUGH LIFE AND THROUGHOUT ALL OF THE HARDSHIPS THAT THEY'VE SUFFERED THROUGH.

I THINK THAT'S ALL WE HAVE.

ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS FROM STUDENT ADVISORS AND OR BOARD MEMBERS.

I THINK IT'S REALLY GREAT WHAT YOU'VE COME UP WITH.

AND DO YOU KNOW HOW THE THIS WHOLE IDEA ORIGINATED? YOU SAY BEFORE COVID, THEY ALSO HAD THIS PROGRAM.

YES. SO THIS ACTIVITY WE'VE BEEN DOING AT MADRONA HAS BEEN A TRADITION FOR A LONG TIME.

IT STARTED WHEN ONE TEACHER DECIDED, HEY, THESE YOUNGER KIDS DON'T REALLY HAVE MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO HANG OUT WITH THE OLDER KIDS, MIDDLE SCHOOLERS ESPECIALLY.

SO WE DECIDED AND THIS WAS BEFORE I WENT TO MADRONA, SO I'M NOT COMPLETELY SURE ON ALL THE DETAILS, BUT WE DECIDED YOUNGER STUDENTS NEED TO BE ABLE TO HAVE TIME WITH THE OLDER STUDENTS, AND OLDER STUDENTS NEED TO BE ABLE TO HAVE TIME TO BE IN A LEADERSHIP ROLE SO THAT WHEN THEY GET TO HIGH SCHOOL AND THEY WANT TO DO DEBATE OR SOME KIND OF SPEECH OR MODEL CONGRESS OR WHATEVER IT IS THAT WE'RE DOING IN HIGH SCHOOL, WE'RE MORE PREPARED FOR THAT.

SO BEING IN A LEADERSHIP ROLE LIKE THIS IN LIKE ON A REGULAR BASIS AND WE'VE BEEN TRYING TO DO IT EVERY MONTH, WE'VE ONLY DONE IT ABOUT THREE TIMES.

[00:10:07]

SO ABOUT ONCE A QUARTER NEXT YEAR, WE'RE GOING TO IMPROVE ON THAT.

THAT'LL BE WHEN ME AND SADIE ARE ALREADY GONE, SADLY.

BUT I'M SURE THE SEVENTH GRADERS WILL DO GREAT AS EIGHTH GRADERS.

THANK YOU. WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE BENEFITS TO SOME OF THE YOUNGER KIDS FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY, THIS ACTIVITY? WELL, I FEEL LIKE IT'S KIND OF INTERESTING, BUT I FEEL LIKE I'VE REALLY GROWN TO FEEL LIKE MADRONA IS A FAMILY THROUGH THIS KIND OF THING.

AND IT'S LIKE REALLY NICE TO GET TO KNOW THESE YOUNGER STUDENTS AND GET TO KNOW WHERE THEY'RE COMING FROM AND JUST TO HAVE A PLACE TO TALK TO EACH OTHER.

AND I FEEL LIKE JUST HAVING THIS PLACE OR LIKE THESE SYAYƏʔ GIVES US A WAY TO JUST BUILD ON OUR COMMUNITY AND MAKE IT A SAFE PLACE FOR EVERYONE TO SAY WHAT THEY NEED TO SAY AND FEEL HOW THEY WANT TO FEEL.

AND I'D LIKE TO SAY IT'S ALSO REALLY NICE TO SEE THE YOUNGER STUDENTS LIKE THEY'LL SEE YOU IN THE HALLWAY AND THEY'LL SAY, HEY, THAT'S THE MIDDLE SCHOOLER IN MY SYAYƏʔ, AND THEY'LL START SCREAMING YOUR NAME AND WAVING AT YOU, AND THEIR TEACHERS WILL TELL THEM TO BE QUIET.

AND IT'S JUST REALLY, REALLY CUTE.

AND SOMETIMES THEY'LL EVEN RUN UP TO YOU AND GIVE YOU A HUG BECAUSE THAT'S HOW WELCOME THEY FELT IN SYAYƏʔ.

I'M CURIOUS.

FIRST OF ALL, I THINK THE WHOLE IDEA IS WONDERFUL.

THERE'S A LOT OF RESEARCH THAT SUPPORTS PEER TUTORING, PEER MENTORING, INTERACTIONS BETWEEN OLDER AND YOUNGER STUDENTS IN AN ACADEMIC SETTING BEING REALLY IMPORTANT IN A LOT OF DIFFERENT WAYS.

I'M WONDERING, ARE THERE OPPORTUNITIES? YOU KNOW, YOU MENTIONED LIKE THEY SEE YOU IN THE HALLS AND THAT, BUT AS YOU DO YOUR GROUP MEETINGS, IS THERE ANY LIKE TUTORING BETWEEN THE KIDS, READING BOOKS, SUPPORT IN TERMS OF ACADEMIC THINGS GOING ON IN THE SCHOOL? UM, WELL, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE HAVE FOR OUR ELECTIVES IS CALLED MENTORSHIP.

AND THIS IS A WAY FOR STUDENTS THAT ARE STRUGGLING IN ANY SUBJECT OR JUST FEEL LIKE THEY NEED THAT EXTRA ACADEMIC HELP.

MIDDLE SCHOOLERS HAVE THE CHOICE TO TAKE THE TIME AND USE THIS AS THEIR ELECTIVE, AND THIS GIVES THE STUDENTS TIME TO WORK ON ANY CLASSWORK THEY NEED.

AND IT ALSO ALLOWS THE MIDDLE SCHOOLERS TO HELP TUTOR THEM WITH ANY THING THEY NEED TO WORK ON.

THAT'S GREAT. YOU GUYS ARE DOING A GOOD JOB OF BUILDING THAT KIND OF THOSE CONNECTIONS ACROSS THE GRADE LEVELS AND WITHIN THE SCHOOL AND TO REALLY BUILD THAT SENSE OF BELONGING IN A STRONG WAY.

SO KUDOS.

I WOULD ONLY ADD MY THANKS TO YOU FOR PRESENTING AND YOU'LL NOTICE THAT WE DO HAVE SOME STUDENTS UP HERE.

WE HAVE TWO GROUPS YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN IN THE FUTURE.

ONE ARE THE STUDENT ADVISORS TO THE BOARD.

AND SO THESE ESTEEMED STUDENTS ARE SELECTED BY THE BOARD TO PARTICIPATE IN THESE MEETINGS AND IN THE PLANNING.

AND THEN ALSO I HAVE A STUDENT ADVISORY TO THE SUPERINTENDENT, WHICH IS SEPARATE FROM THESE STUDENTS.

AND I HOPE THAT YOU'LL CONSIDER JOINING EITHER OF THOSE GROUPS AS YOU CONTINUE SO THAT WE CAN GET YOUR INSIGHTS AS YOU CONTINUE THROUGH YOUR JOURNEY THROUGH EDMONDS.

IF YOU COULD SHARE EITHER BOTH EIGHTH GRADERS, IF YOU COULD SHARE WHAT YOUR PLANS ARE FOR NEXT YEAR.

UM, NEXT YEAR I'M GOING TO BE ATTENDING EDMONDS-WOODWAY AND I'M GOING TO BE TAKING THE IB PROGRAM.

SO I'M GOING TO BE TAKING ALL HONORS CLASSES, ALL OF THAT.

I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO IT.

UM, I'M GOING TO BE ATTENDING MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL, AND I HOPE TO TAKE SOME HONORS CLASSES.

NOT IN EVERY CLASS, THOUGH.

AND I HOPE TO LETTER IN SOME OF THE SPORTS I PLAY CURRENTLY.

GREAT. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

WE SO APPRECIATE YOUR COMING AND SHARING ALL THAT INFORMATION WITH US [APPLAUSE].

THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

IT'S ALWAYS A TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW THE STUDENTS.

SO WE'LL WISH YOU WELL.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WAS THINKING.

I JUST LIKE TO THANK OUR TWO STUDENTS, SADIE AND REINA AND TOM GORNEY HERE IS RETIRING THIS YEAR.

AND I WANT TO MAKE SURE I MENTION THAT HE'S BEEN AT OUR SCHOOL FOR 20 SOME YEARS AND HE'S BEEN TEACHING FOR ABOUT 40.

AND SO HE'S ONE OF US DINOSAURS.

AND I APPRECIATE HIS TIME WORKING WITH OUR KIDS IN A LEADERSHIP CAPACITY SO.

AS YOU CAN SEE, WE HAVE SOME GREAT STUDENTS AT MADRONA AND THESE ARE JUST A FEW THAT ARE A COUPLE OF THEM THAT ARE WORKING WITH OUR KIDS EVERY DAY.

ONE OF THE THINGS I WOULD LIKE TO SAY IS THAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR WAYS THAT THIS BECOMES EVEN MORE MEANINGFUL THAN IT HAS BEEN THIS YEAR.

I THINK THESE STUDENTS REALLY TOOK THE LEAD, TOOK ON THAT MANTLE AND REALLY PROMOTED THIS IDEA OF FAMILY SYAYƏʔ AT OUR SCHOOL.

[00:15:01]

AND I KNOW THEY WANTED TO DO THEM MORE, BUT BOY, IT WAS A BIG JOB AND I THINK THEY UNDERSTOOD THAT.

IT REALLY TOOK A LOT OF PLANNING, A LOT OF EFFORT, A LOT OF ORGANIZING, AND AND THEY DID IT ALL.

AND SO I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THE WORK THEY'VE DONE.

THEY REALLY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THAT SIP GOAL NUMBER THREE, THAT ACCEPTANCE AND BELONGING THAT WE'RE TRYING TO BUILD IN OUR SCHOOL OR BUILD ON IN OUR SCHOOL.

BECAUSE AS THEY'VE MENTIONED, THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR MANY YEARS AT OUR SCHOOL, USED TO BE CALLED TRIBES, AND THEN WE WORKED WITH TULALIP TRIBES AND THEY GAVE US THIS NAME TO USE IN OUR SCHOOL THAT WE THOUGHT WAS MORE APPROPRIATE.

AND SO IT'S GOT A LONG TRADITION IN OUR SCHOOL SO.

NOW I FEEL THE PRESSURE.

SO GOOD EVENING, SUPERINTENDENT MINER, BOARD OF DIRECTORS, COMMUNITY MEMBERS.

IT'S AN HONOR TO BE HERE TO REPRESENT MADRONA SCHOOL.

I AM AN INTERIM PRINCIPAL.

MY NAME IS FABIAN CASTILLEJA.

I'VE BEEN IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR FIVE YEARS.

HOLLY ZENS IS OUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL.

SHE'S BEEN WITH OUR SCHOOL FOR ABOUT FOUR YEARS, AND SHE REALLY HAS DONE A GREAT JOB OF KIND OF INFORMING ME ABOUT THE HISTORY AND THE FOCUS OF OUR SCHOOL THAT THEY'VE HAD OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS AND KIND OF REMINDED ME THE DIRECTION THAT WE'RE HEADED.

SO I APPRECIATE THE HELP SHE'S GIVEN TO US THROUGHOUT THAT TIME, AND IT'S BEEN A REALLY GOOD YEAR.

I REALLY FEEL LIKE WE'VE DONE A PRETTY, PRETTY DECENT JOB OF MOVING TOWARD THE THE GOALS THAT WE HAVE IN PLACE.

THERE'S A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR SCHOOL.

MADRONA IS REALLY AN INTERESTING PLACE.

IT'S A K-8 SCHOOL, ONE OF TWO IN OUR DISTRICT.

IT'S THE ONLY MULTI-AGE SCHOOL, SO WE DO A SINGLE GRADE KINDERGARTEN, THEN WE DO ONE THROUGH THREE GRADES TOGETHER AND WE DO FOUR THROUGH SIX TOGETHER.

AND THEN SIX AND SEVEN ARE MIXED TOGETHER IN A SIX PERIOD DAY.

AND SO WE ALSO ARE THE REGIONAL HOME FOR THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING PROGRAM. AND SO WE HAVE QUITE A FEW STUDENTS IN THERE FROM PRESCHOOL ALL THE WAY THROUGH EIGHTH GRADE.

AND WE AGAIN, PART OF OUR GOAL IS TRY TO BRING THEM INTO OUR SCHOOL WAS JUST, YOU KNOW, A MADRONA STUDENT.

THEY'RE A STUDENT WHEN THEY WALK THROUGH THE DOOR, DOESN'T MATTER WHERE THEY'RE COMING FROM.

THEY ARE OUR STUDENT AND WE REALLY ARE TRYING TO BUILD THAT SENSE OF BELONGING FOR ALL STUDENTS.

AS YOU CAN SEE, WE HAVE ABOUT 610 STUDENTS IN OUR SCHOOL.

WE HAVE A GROWING NUMBER OF MULTILINGUAL STUDENTS.

WE HAVE GROWING NUMBER OF FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH STUDENTS THAT QUALIFY FOR FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH, A GROWING POPULATION OF SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS.

OUR DIVERSITY IS REALLY GROWING AT MADRONA.

I THINK THAT AGAIN, ANYWHERE THAT YOU HAVE THIS CHANGE IN POPULATION, IT ALWAYS CREATES A LITTLE BIT OF FRICTION.

I THINK THAT FOLKS HAVE TO ADJUST TO WHAT OUR OUR STUDENTS ARE DEALING WITH, WHERE THEY'RE COMING FROM, AND FOR US TO INCREASE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE POPULATIONS WE'RE WORKING FOR. AND SO WE'VE BEEN GOING THROUGH THAT AT MADRONA THIS YEAR, AND I KNOW THEY'VE BEEN WORKING WITH THAT IN THE IN THE PAST FEW YEARS.

SO I GOT TO PUSH A BUTTON.

SO THIS IS ANOTHER AREA THAT I THINK WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON THIS YEAR THAT WE REALLY TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT WE CREATE THAT CONSISTENCY ACROSS THE BOARD WITH CURRICULUM, WITH PERSONNEL, WITH UNDERSTANDING OF OUR BELIEFS AND WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO AS A MULTI MULTI-AGE SCHOOL.

WE TRYING TO CREATE AGAIN AS WE TALK AND I'LL SHARE WITH YOU LATER ABOUT SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE DOING WITH OUR MATH PROGRAM TO TRY AND MAKE THAT CONSISTENT INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES WORK ACROSS K THROUGH EIGHT AND ALSO CREATE THESE SUPPORTIVE, HEALTHY AND SAFE SYSTEMS IN OUR SCHOOLS SO.

I WANT TO TALK ABOUT OUR SIP GOAL NUMBER TWO, WHICH IS MATH.

AND SO THIS IS OUR THEORY OF ACTION.

WE SAY, OF COURSE, THAT IF WE DO THESE THINGS, THEN EVERYBODY DOES THEIR JOB.

ADMINISTRATION IS PRIORITIZED PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AND COLLABORATION.

TEACHERS ENGAGE IN DEEP INVESTIGATION OF CONTENT STANDARDS AND OF ALL STAFF COLLECTIVE OR COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ACADEMIC GROWTH OF ALL STUDENTS.

THEN ALL STUDENTS WILL ACCESS ESSENTIAL ACADEMIC AND GRADE LEVEL EXPECTATIONS AND RECEIVE A MEANINGFUL AND TARGETED INTERVENTION.

[00:20:04]

SO THESE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE REALLY FOCUS ON.

OUR GRADE LEVEL MATH GROUPS MAY MEET ON A REGULAR BASIS.

THEY MEET IN PRIMARY LEVEL TEAMS AND INTERMEDIATE LEVEL TEAMS. THEY IDENTIFIED THIS YEAR REALLY THIS MATH PRIORITY STANDARDS AND TRY TO GET EVERYBODY TO FOCUS ON THE PRIORITY STANDARDS FOR MATH AND TO HAVE THE SAME LANGUAGE SO THAT OUR KIDS ARE AGAIN, MOVING FROM GRADE LEVEL TO GRADE LEVEL, REALLY WITH THE SAME UNDERSTANDING OF MATH THROUGHOUT OUR SCHOOL.

THEY REALLY WANT TO FOCUS ON SOME MATH FLUENCY PRACTICE ON A WEEKLY BASIS.

SO THEY'RE GIVING THEM TESTS ON ADDING OR DEPENDING ON THE GRADE LEVEL LIKE MULTIPLICATION SKILLS, DIVISION SKILLS, ALL THOSE KIND OF MATH FLUENCY THINGS TO HELP THEM WORK THROUGH THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MATH PROBLEMS AND BE REALLY FLUENT IN THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF MATH.

SO THIS EXAMPLE, ALL OF OUR TEACHERS GOT TOGETHER AND WORKED TOGETHER AND LOOKED AT THE CONTENT STANDARDS FOR MATH.

AND THIS HAS BEEN A PROCESS OVER THE OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS.

AND AGAIN, THERE WAS SO MUCH DISRUPTION IN OUR SCHOOL.

WE HAVE A BEAUTIFUL SCHOOL AT MADRONA.

IF YOU HAVEN'T HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO COME VISIT, I INVITE YOU TO COME SEE THAT SCHOOL.

IT'S JUST AN AMAZING FACILITY.

BUT IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING THERE OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS, OUR SCHOOL HAS MOVED THREE TIMES.

SO WE'VE MOVED FROM OUR OLD FACILITY TO ALDERWOOD BECAUSE THERE'S AN ISSUE WITH WATER AT THAT SCHOOL.

AND SO HALFWAY THROUGH THE YEAR, THAT FIRST YEAR, THEN THEY MOVED BACK TO MADRONA AND THEN THE NEXT YEAR THEY WERE THERE TILL MARCH, AND THEN WE HAD THE PANDEMIC.

AND SO WE WERE OUT, JUST SO MUCH DISRUPTION OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS.

AND AS I MENTIONED, WE'VE HAD THREE PRINCIPALS IN OUR SCHOOL IN THE LAST THREE YEARS.

AND SO A LOT OF THINGS HAVE DISRUPTED THIS PROCESS OF DISCUSSING AND REALLY COMING TO AN UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT THE PRIORITY STANDARDS ARE FOR THE DIFFERENT GRADE LEVELS. BUT WE'VE COMPLETED THAT PROCESS AND WE TALKED ABOUT IT AGAIN THIS YEAR.

WE PUT IT ALL TOGETHER SO THAT AGAIN, THIS IS THE SIXTH GRADE FOCUS.

YOU CAN SEE THERE'S JUST KIND OF THREE AREAS THAT THEY'RE FOCUSING ON.

IT ALSO TALKS ABOUT THE IDEA THAT THEY'RE BUILDING ON SKILLS COMING FROM OTHER GRADE LEVELS.

AND SO, AGAIN, I FEEL REALLY CONFIDENT IN MATH THAT OUR TEACHERS ARE PREPARED TO REALLY KIND OF ADDRESS SOME OF THE CONCERNS THAT WE'VE HAD AS FAR AS LACK OF CONSISTENCY IN TEACHING AND INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES FOR ALL OUR KIDS K THROUGH SIX AND ACTUALLY K THROUGH EIGHT.

AGAIN, WE'VE BEEN, I THINK, SHOWN SOME REALLY GOOD GROWTH IN OUR STUDENT IREADY TEST.

OUR FALL SCORES ARE THERE ON THE LEFT.

AND AGAIN, WE PUT THESE TOGETHER, COMBINED OUR FOURTH THROUGH SIXTH GRADE SCORES SO THAT YOU CAN KIND OF SEE THEM FOUR THROUGH SIX.

WE'RE SITTING RIGHT AT 41% THAT OUR EXCUSE ME 16% IN THE FALL.

AND THEN IF YOU COMBINE THE TWO, IT'S ABOUT 43% FOR THAT EARLY ON GRADE LEVEL AND MID OR ABOVE.

AND SO YOU CAN SEE IN THE ONE GRADE LEVEL BELOW ON THE FALL, IT WAS 40.8% AND THEN 10% TWO GRADE LEVELS BELOW 7%, THREE OR MORE.

AND SO THEN IF YOU GO TO THE RIGHT, YOU SEE OUR WINTER SCORES.

YOU CAN SEE EVERY LEVEL.

WE REALLY HAVE IMPROVED IN ALL THOSE CATEGORIES.

AND SO WE'RE MOVING UP.

WE HAVE ONLY 8% AND TWO GRADE LEVELS BELOW THAT.

THAT GROUP OF [INAUDIBLE] ONE GRADE LEVEL BELOW 35.6% IS IMPROVED, RIGHT? IT'S FROM 40.6%.

BUT ALSO THOSE OTHER AREAS HAVE GROWN A LOT.

AND SO WE REALLY ARE FOCUSING ON THAT ONE GRADE LEVEL BELOW.

IF WE CAN GET THOSE KIDS TO MOVE, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A REALLY BIG IMPACT ON THOSE KIDS AND THOSE SCORES AND MAKING SURE THAT THEY HAVE A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF OUR OUR MATH STANDARDS. THIS IS A BREAKDOWN.

I HOPE YOU CAN SEE IT. THESE ARE ACTUALLY BY GRADE.

AND SO IF YOU LOOK AT THE BLUE FOURTH, ORANGE IS FIFTH, GREEN IS SIXTH.

AND IF YOU GO ACROSS AGAIN, YOU CAN SEE ON GRADE LEVEL AND THEN THEY GO TO EARLY ON, THEN ONE GRADE LEVEL BELOW, WHICH IS THAT BIG MIDDLE ONE ON THE LEFT.

AND THOSE ARE THE FALL SCORES ON THE LEFT.

AND YOU CAN SEE AGAIN, OUR WE WANT THE SCORES ON THE LEFT TO KIND OF GO UP.

WE WANT THE SCORES ON THE RIGHT TO KIND OF GO DOWN AND ALL GRADE LEVELS.

THAT'S WHAT'S HAPPENING THERE.

THE BARS ON THE RIGHT ARE GOING DOWN ON THE FAR RIGHT IN WINTER.

[00:25:02]

THE BARS ON THE LEFT FOR WINTER ARE GOING UP.

AND AGAIN, WE LOOK AT THAT MIDDLE SCORE WHERE WE'RE ONE GRADE LEVEL BELOW FOR ALL GRADES, THAT THAT REALLY IS A FOCUS THAT WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THOSE KIDS REALLY GET SOME MORE INTENSIVE INSTRUCTION SO THAT WE IMPROVE IN THAT AREA.

WE HAVE JUST COMPLETED THE DATA TEAM REVIEW PROTOCOL FROM KINDERGARTEN THROUGH SIXTH GRADE.

THIS IS AN MTSS MULTI-TIERED STUDENT SYSTEM OF SUPPORTS FOR ACADEMICS THAT WERE THE DISTRICT IS INTRODUCING.

WE HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE TO BE A PILOT SCHOOL AND IT REALLY THE REALLY COOL THING ABOUT THIS IS IT PULLS ALL THIS DATA THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT.

IT PULLS ALL THIS WORK THAT WE'VE BEEN DOING IN TEAMS ABOUT PRIORITY STANDARDS.

IT PULLS ALL THE DISCUSSION ABOUT WHAT IS WORKING AS FAR AS INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES IN THE CLASSROOM TOGETHER TO PUT IT IN A FORMAT SO WE CAN REALLY LOOK AT IT AND WE CAN SHARE WITH ONE ANOTHER AND WE CAN FIGURE OUT WHAT'S WORKING, WHAT'S NOT WORKING, WHAT DATA IS KIND OF DRIVING OUR DECISIONS AND REALLY KIND OF COMING UP WITH A GOOD PLAN FOR US TO GO AFTER AGAIN, FOR THE STUDENTS THAT NEED TO HAVE MORE INSTRUCTION, TO HAVE TARGETED INSTRUCTION, HAVE OTHER SUPPORTS IN PLACE. THIS IS A REALLY IT LOOKS LIKE A GREAT TOOL TO USE.

AND OUR TEACHERS WERE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT USING IT YESTERDAY.

WE'VE BEEN LOOKING AT IT FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS AND NOW WE WERE WE'RE JUST REALLY ABLE TO KIND OF SEE WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE AND WE'RE GOING TO MEET AGAIN AND GO THROUGH THIS PLAN AND HOPEFULLY WE'LL BE ABLE TO SHARE SOME MORE INFORMATION WITH IT ABOUT SO YOU CAN SEE SOME OF THE PROGRESS WE'RE MAKING WITH THIS TOOL.

BUT IT'S A GOOD TOOL AND I APPRECIATE THE OPPORTUNITY TO USE IT AT OUR SCHOOL.

AND THAT'S WHAT WE'RE DOING AT MADRONA RIGHT NOW.

I KNOW IT WAS HOPEFULLY WE KIND OF GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF SOME OF THE CONVERSATIONS WE'RE HAVING INSTRUCTIONALLY, BUT ALSO UNDERSTANDING THAT WE ARE COMING FROM A PLACE.

I THINK ONE OF THE THINGS THAT ALL SCHOOLS MENTIONED, BUT, YOU KNOW, WE FEEL IT EVERY DAY THAT WE'RE COMING FROM A PLACE [INAUDIBLE] REAL DIFFICULT.

OUR STAFF HAS REALLY BEEN FANTASTIC WORKING IN SOME REALLY DIFFICULT SITUATIONS AND AND HELPING STUDENTS DEAL WITH SOME REAL TOUGH SOCIAL EMOTIONAL ISSUES THAT THEY FACE WHEN THEY COME BACK TO SCHOOL.

AND EVEN THOUGH THIS IS OUR SECOND YEAR, WE'RE STILL DEALING WITH A LOT OF THE ISSUES THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE BRINGING WITH THEM WHEN THEY COME THROUGH OUR DOORS.

AND OUR STAFF HAS BEEN GREAT ABOUT BEING FLEXIBLE, REALLY FOCUSING ON THE NEEDS OF THE KIDS AND ALSO WORKING TOWARDS IMPROVING OUR INSTRUCTION SET.

EVERY KID THAT WALKS THROUGH THE DOORS AT MADRONA GETS THAT OPPORTUNITY FOR SUCCESS.

SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH AND HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS FROM STUDENTS OR BOARD MEMBERS? I DO HAVE A QUESTION.

SO I UNDERSTOOD THAT ONE OF YOUR INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES WAS LEVELED MATH GROUPS.

AND ARE YOU DOING THAT BY GRADE OR ARE YOU STILL.

EXACTLY. IT'S BY GRADE.

AND SO WHAT AGAIN, IT'S INTERESTING.

AGAIN, I'M GETTING TO LEARN A LOT ABOUT HOW WE DO THINGS AT MADRONA AND LOOKING FORWARD TO MAKING SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT.

BUT THREE OF OUR INTERMEDIATE GRADES ACTUALLY WALKED TWO AND THEY TEACH GRADE LEVEL MATH.

SO WE HAVE A SIXTH, FIFTH, FOURTH GRADE LEVEL MATH BEING TAUGHT AROUND OUR CAMPUS.

TWO OF ONE CENTER OR TWO TEACHERS AT TEAM TEACH TOGETHER OPTED TO STAY IN THEIR OWN CENTER.

AND SO THEY TRADE BACK AND FORTH AND THEY ALTERNATE TEACHING SIXTH GRADE MATH AND FIFTH GRADE MATH AND SO THEY ARE DOING THAT WITHIN THEIR OWN CENTER GATHERING DATA.

THEY MET ALTOGETHER AS A GROUP YESTERDAY, AND SO THEY BROUGHT ALL THE DATA TOGETHER.

SO IT WAS A GOOD CHANCE TO COMPARE, RIGHT, TO SEE HOW EACH GROUP WAS DOING.

AND SO I THINK WE'RE GOING TO LOOK MORE INTENSELY AT THAT TO SEE WHAT THE DATA IS TELLING US ABOUT HOW THAT INSTRUCTION IS GOING AND MAYBE DRIVE SOME DECISION MAKING FOR NEXT YEAR.

SO JUST TO CLARIFY, ALL THE STUDENTS IN FOURTH THROUGH SIXTH ARE LEARNING MATH JUST IN THEIR OWN GRADE OR ARE THEY DOING COMBINATION? THEY'RE LEARNING MATH AT THEIR OWN GRADE LEVEL.

SO THEY'RE ALL JOINING OTHER FOURTH GRADERS OR WHATEVER.

OR YEAH. OR AND I'LL MENTION THIS, THERE ARE A FEW THAT ARE WORKING ABOVE GRADE LEVEL, RIGHT? AND SO WE HAVE SIXTH GRADERS WORKING IN SOME MAYBE PRE-ALGEBRA.

AND SO WE HAVE STUDENTS THAT ARE WORKING AND THEY WORK WITH TOM MR. GORNEY HELPS US WITH THOSE STUDENTS AND GETTING MATERIAL OR THINGS TO THE TEACHER, BUT THEY WORK IN OUR CLASSROOMS AT THE AT THE INTERMEDIATE LEVEL.

THANK YOU. OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS?

[00:30:14]

COULD YOU GO TO THE MIC? THAT WAY THE PEOPLE AT HOME WILL BE ABLE TO HEAR YOU AS WELL.

AND AND ONE OF THE THINGS THAT THE K-8 AND THE MIXED CLASSES DO IS IT ALLOWS THE STUDENT TO BE WHERE THEY BELONG.

IF THERE'S A FOURTH GRADER THAT NEEDS TO BE IN FIFTH GRADE MATH OR MAYBE EVEN SIXTH GRADE MATH, BECAUSE THAT CHILD IS ABLE TO DO THAT MATH, IT GIVES THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO THAT SO THEY CAN SLIDE UP AND DOWN.

IF WE HAVE A STUDENT WHO'S A FIFTH GRADER, WHO'S STILL STRUGGLING OR NEEDS SOME EXTRA HELP, WE DO THAT AS WELL.

WE ALSO HAVE TUTORING WHERE THE KIDS COME INTO MY CLASSES.

I HAVE A GEOMETRY CLASS AND AN ALGEBRA CLASS WHERE THE KIDS THAT NEED HELP WILL COME IN ONE DAY A WEEK AND WE WORK WITH THEM AND HELP THEM WITH THE SKILLS THAT THEY NEED TO KNOW.

SO THAT'S THE NICE THING ABOUT MADRONA AND WORKING THREE YEARS, THEY CAN MOVE UP OR DOWN WHERE THEY BELONG.

I'VE ALSO HAD SIXTH GRADERS DO SEVENTH GRADE MATH WITH ME, AND THEN THEY'RE READY FOR PRE-ALGEBRA ALGEBRA IN SEVENTH GRADE.

SO WE'RE VERY FLEXIBLE THAT WAY.

OKAY, GOOD QUESTION.

ANYTHING ELSE? DIRECTOR CHASE OR DIRECTOR SMITH I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'RE ABLE TO GIVE COMMENTS.

IF YOU WANT TO ASK QUESTIONS.

OKAY. SO WE THANK YOU SO MUCH.

IT'S GOOD TO HEAR.

WE KNOW THAT MADRONA HAS A DIFFERENT CONFIGURATION AND A DIFFERENT SET OF CONCEPTS ABOUT THE STRUCTURING, AND IT'S ALWAYS GOOD TO SEE THE KIND OF PROGRESS THAT YOU'RE MAKING AND HOW YOU GUYS ARE GOING ABOUT DOING THE WORK THAT'S SO IMPORTANT.

SO WE APPRECIATE THAT SO MUCH.

GREAT. THANK YOU.

IN CASE YOU DIDN'T SEE IT, WE DID HAVE A COMMENT FROM DIRECTOR CHASE WHO SAID REALLY APPRECIATE THE PRESENTATION.

THEY'RE NOT ABLE TO COME IN SO THAT WE CAN HEAR THEM.

BUT SHE DID PUT THAT INTO THE CHAT.

SO THANK YOU. APPRECIATE IT.

THANK YOU, FOLKS. THANK YOU [APPLAUSE].

NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS THE SUPERINTENDENT REPORT.

[7. SUPERINTENDENT REPORT-6:55 pm]

WELL, APPARENTLY, WHILE MANY OF US WERE WORKING AWAY IN THE BUILDING TODAY, WE HAD A BIT OF WEATHER OUT THERE IN THE IN THE SCHOOLS.

WE HAD SEVERAL BUILDINGS GO LOSE POWER AND THEY KIND OF STARTED COMING IN ONE AFTER THE OTHER.

AND SO WE REALIZED THERE MUST BE SOME WIND OR SOMETHING GOING ON.

I BELIEVE EVERYTHING'S BEEN RESTORED NOW AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO HAVING A NORMAL ON TIME START.

BUT THANK YOU FOR THE PATIENCE OF OUR STUDENTS AND OUR FACULTY AS WE WORK THROUGH SOME OF THAT TODAY.

I'D SAY THEY RANGED FROM ABOUT 90 MINUTES TO MERE MINUTES THROUGHOUT THE DAY TODAY, IMPACTING AT LEAST 4 OR 5 SCHOOLS.

THANK YOU FOR THAT UPDATE.

BUT EVERYBODY'S BACK ON TRACK.

I BELIEVE THAT TO BE THE CASE.

BUT I ALSO HAVEN'T BEEN PAYING THAT MUCH ATTENTION TO MY PHONE, BUT I'M PRETTY SURE WE'RE ON TRACK AS OF NOW.

EXCELLENT. NEXT ON THE AGENDA, WE HAVE APPROVAL OF MINUTES, AND I'D LIKE TO MAKE SURE THE BOARD KNOWS THAT WE HAVE DONE A LITTLE BIT OF RESEARCH AND IT IS POSSIBLE FOR US TO NOW APPROVE MINUTES FOR MORE THAN ONE MEETING AT THE SAME TIME, SIMILAR TO HOW WE DO THE CONSENT AGENDA.

AND WE ALSO LEARNED THAT IF SOMEBODY HAS BEEN ABSENT FROM A MEETING, THEY DON'T HAVE TO ABSTAIN.

AND IN THE PAST WE HAVE USED THAT THEY MAY ABSTAIN IF THEY CHOOSE TO.

BUT WE ALSO REALIZE THAT BOARD MEMBERS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO WATCH IT LIVE STREAM OR TO GO BACK TO VIDEO.

AND SO IT'S NOT A REQUIREMENT TO ABSTAIN FROM APPROVING MINUTES IF YOU WEREN'T AT A MEETING, BUT YOU CAN CERTAINLY CHOOSE TO DO THAT.

SO WITH THAT BEING SAID, WE HAVE TWO SETS OF MINUTES FOR TONIGHT.

[8. APPROVAL OF MINUTES-7:05 pm]

ONE IS THE MARCH 7TH, 2023 SPECIAL MEETING, AND THE OTHER WAS THE REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING ON MARCH 14TH, 2023.

DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE THOSE SETS OF MINUTES? I MOVE TO APPROVE.

SECOND, I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND.

IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE. I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE.

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF APPROVING THOSE TWO SETS OF MINUTES, PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE AYE OR BY RAISING YOUR HAND.

AND I SEE HANDS AND I SEE BOTH HANDS RAISED FOR DIRECTOR CHASE AND DIRECTOR SMITH.

OKAY. ANYBODY NAY WHO'S OPPOSED WILL SAY NAY.

AND ANY ABSTENTIONS? AND SO THOSE TWO SETS OF BOARD MEETING MINUTES ARE APPROVED.

NEXT, WE HAVE PUBLIC COMMENTS.

[9. PUBLIC COMMENTS-7:15 pm]

[00:35:12]

THE PUBLIC COMMENT SECTION OF THE AGENDA IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CITIZENS TO ADDRESS THE SCHOOL BOARD.

SINCE THIS IS A BUSINESS MEETING OF THE SCHOOL BOARD, THE PURPOSE OF PUBLIC COMMENTS IS FOR OUR STAKEHOLDERS TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE BOARD DIRECTORS ABOUT ITEMS ON THE AGENDA OR OTHER SPECIFIC WORK THAT'S WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.

THIS IS NOT A TIME FOR THE AUDIENCE TO ADDRESS EACH OTHER.

WITH THAT IN MIND, WE ARE RETURNING TO THE CONFIGURATION THAT WAS USED FOR YEARS PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC, WITH PUBLIC COMMENTS BEING DELIVERED DIRECTLY TO THE BOARD AT THE TABLE FACING THE BOARD.

ITEMS BROUGHT FORWARD DURING THIS PORTION OF THE MEETING ARE NOT TYPICALLY ACTED UPON BY THE BOARD AT THIS TIME, BUT MAY BE FOLLOWED UP BY THE BOARD, THE SUPERINTENDENT AND OR STAFF AT A LATER TIME.

PEOPLE MAY SUBMIT PUBLIC COMMENTS FOR A BOARD MEETING IN THREE DIFFERENT WAYS.

YOU MAY CHOOSE TO READ YOUR COMMENT ALOUD IN PERSON OR STATE YOUR COMMENT IN PERSON.

YOU MAY CHOOSE TO READ YOUR COMMENT ALOUD VIRTUALLY, OR YOU MAY CHOOSE TO SUBMIT YOUR COMMENT IN WRITING.

TONIGHT, WE DON'T HAVE ANY VIRTUAL OR COMMENTS IN WRITING, BUT WHEN WE DO, THE BOARD READS ALL READS ALL THE WRITTEN COMMENTS WHICH ARE LATER ATTACHED TO THE MEETING AGENDA AND AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC ON THE BOARD DOCS WEBSITE.

THE BOARD ALSO ACCEPTS WRITTEN COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS AT ANY TIME THROUGH EMAIL.

WE READ EACH COMMENT AND EMAIL WE RECEIVE AND WE APPRECIATE THE TIME AND EFFORT THAT IT TAKES FOR THOSE WHO WRITE THEM.

WHILE WE ENCOURAGE AND APPRECIATE PUBLIC COMMENTS, PLEASE LIMIT YOUR COMMENTS THAT ARE READ ALOUD TO THREE MINUTES.

IF A COMMENT BECOMES TOO LENGTHY, I MAY NEED TO INTERRUPT IN ORDER TO ALLOW EACH PERSON EQUAL TIME.

WE ALSO ASK THOSE WHO ARE MAKING A PUBLIC COMMENT DURING A BOARD MEETING TO PLEASE MAKE THEIR COMMENTS IN A CIVIL MANNER WITHOUT DISPARAGING NAME CALLING OR OTHERWISE TARGETING ANY ONE PERSON OR GROUP IN THE DISTRICT.

SIMILARLY, WE ASK EVERYONE IN THE AUDIENCE TO PLEASE SHOW RESPECT BY LISTENING QUIETLY WITHOUT TALKING OR WHISPERING TO EACH OTHER SO THAT EVERYONE CAN HEAR EACH COMMENT.

TONIGHT. EXCUSE ME.

I'M FIGHTING A COLD, WHICH IS WHY I'M PROTECTING EVERYBODY BUT SNIFFLING AT THE SAME TIME.

WE HAVE FIVE FOLKS WHO'VE SIGNED UP FOR PUBLIC COMMENTS.

THE FIRST ONE IS ROBERT FRETZ.

WHY TALK ABOUT HISTORY AT THESE MEETINGS? THREE YEARS A SUBSTITUTE HERE I WAS SURROUNDED BY SIGNS OUR KIDS AREN'T TAUGHT CRITICAL THINKING IN HISTORY.

THE ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION OF AN ISSUE TO FORM A JUDGMENT.

I FOUND A ESD HISTORY TEACHING CLOSE TO 100% ONE END OF THE SPECTRUM.

THE ONLY POSTERS IN HALLWAYS AND CLASSROOMS WERE LEFT WING.

BOOKS ON DISPLAYS IN LIBRARIES WERE LEFT WING.

BY THE WAY, FLAG DAY IS IN JUNE.

HERE IN GREATER SEATTLE, WHERE REPUBLICANS DON'T GET 10% OF THE VOTE.

YOU THINK MOST OF THE COUNTRY THINKS THE WAY PEOPLE HERE DO.

DEMOCRATS GOOD REPUBLICANS ARE BAD, BUT GO 90 MILES NORTH, RED TOWNS ALONG THE CANADIAN BORDER, 75 MILES EAST, RED COUNTY, 75 MILES SOUTH, RED COUNTIES 50 MILES WEST, RED COUNTIES.

THE KIDS NEED TO BE ABLE TO TALK TO PEOPLE WHO THINK DIFFERENTLY.

I'M NOT SURE THAT THEY CAN.

I FEAR KIDS ARE BEING PREPARED TO LIVE IN A BLUE ECHO CHAMBER, NOT AN EVENLY DIVIDED COUNTRY.

RECENT ELECTIONS HAVE BEEN 50/50.

THE SENATE IS 51/49 DEMOCRATS, THE HOUSE REPUBLICANS 222 TO 213.

AND TWO VERY WEAK PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES LEAD THE POLLS.

I TAUGHT SOCIAL STUDIES 11 YEARS AT KING'S CHRISTIAN SCHOOL, REALIZED I WASN'T TEACHING GAY RIGHTS.

SO, ADDED OBERGEFELL, THE SUPREME COURT CASE LEGALIZING GAY MARRIAGE.

I THEN WROTE A UNIT ON THE COLORADO BAKER NOT YET DECIDED, ADDING THE TRI-CITIES FLORIST, A NEW MEXICO WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER AND AN OREGON CATERER, AS TO WHETHER THEY HAD TO CREATE A GAY EVENT OR NOT.

I TOOK ARTICLES FROM THE TWO BIG GAY MAGAZINES OUT IN THE ADVOCATE.

PLUS NATIONAL REVIEW, THE LEADING CONSERVATIVE NEWS MAGAZINE, AND CHRISTIANITY TODAY, THE LEADING CHRISTIAN NEWS MAGAZINE, FORMED INTO FOUR GROUPS DISCUSSED PRESENT BOTH SIDES TO THE CLASS, THEN EACH WRITE A FIVE PARAGRAPH ESSAY GIVING HOW YOU THINK YOUR CASE SHOULD BE DECIDED, CITING EXISTING LAWS IN THE CONSTITUTION.

YOU DECIDE YOU DEFEND YOUR BELIEFS.

I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK.

I CARE THAT YOU DO THINK AND RESPECT OTHERS THAT THINK DIFFERENTLY.

THAT'S EDUCATION.

FOR YEARS, WHITE PEOPLE DID CRUEL, UNSPEAKABLE THINGS TO BLACK AND NATIVE AMERICANS.

[00:40:02]

BUT SO DID EVERYONE ELSE DO HORRIBLE THINGS.

EVERY PERSON SHIPPED OUT OF AFRICA IN CHAINS WAS FIRST CAPTURED BY A FELLOW AFRICAN.

ONLY 4% OF THOSE WHO CAME ACROSS THE ATLANTIC CAME HERE.

ACROSS THIS CONTINENT FOR CENTURIES BEFORE THE ARRIVAL OF WHITE PEOPLE.

NATIVE AMERICANS HAD SLAVES.

IT WAS COMMON.

WE WERE ALL BAD AND WE WERE ALSO ALL GOOD.

WE SURVIVED AND DID GREAT THINGS.

WHITE PEOPLE DID. BLACK PEOPLE DID.

NATIVE AMERICANS DID.

ASIANS DID.

NOBODY HAS EARNED THE RIGHT TO POINT OUT THAT ONE SIDE IS BETTER THAN THE OTHERS.

I TALK ABOUT HISTORY, BOTH SIDES OF THE STORY BECAUSE I DON'T THINK BOTH SIDES ARE BEING TAUGHT.

THANK YOU [APPLAUSE]. NEXT UP IS STEPHEN KEELER.

THEY SHOULD ALL BE THE SAME.

JUST ONE PAGE.

THANK YOU.

GOOD EVENING TO ALL PRESENT.

MY NAME IS STEPHEN KEELER.

I'M A RESIDENT OF EDMONDS, A TAXPAYER WITH NO STUDENTS IN THE SCHOOLS.

MS. CHASE I LIVE IN YOUR DISTRICT AND I WILL ADDRESS YOU BRIEFLY THIS EVENING.

I'M SORRY YOU'RE NOT HERE.

I HOPE YOU'RE WELL.

I RECOGNIZE YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COMMUNITY AND THE DISTRICT.

THE SIX MONTH ANNIVERSARY OF A PAST EVENT AT EDMONDS-WOODWAY HIGH SCHOOL IS UPON US.

I REPEAT MY REQUEST TO YOU, MS. CHASE, TO HAVE THE DISTRICT PLACE UNIFORMED POLICE OFFICERS IN DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOLS AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS.

I HAVE PROVIDED PAGE TWO OF A TWO PAGE CHARGING DOCUMENT.

UNFORTUNATELY, BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT HERE, YOU CAN'T SEE IT.

BUT IN THE FUTURE I WILL GET A COPY TO YOU.

THIS PAGE DESCRIBES FACTS IN THIS PAST GUN INCIDENT GATHERED BY THE SNOHOMISH COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE.

AS YOU COULD READ IF YOU WERE HERE.

THIS INDIVIDUAL'S EXCUSE IS THAT HE JUST HAS A GUN FOR SELF PROTECTION.

IT'S STATED IN PARAGRAPH TWO THE FULL PARAGRAPH TWO, SECOND TO THE LAST SENTENCE.

I ASK, IS THIS NOTHING MORE THAN ABSURD DECEIT FROM A GANG MEMBER CHARGED WITH PAST FELONIES? MS. CHASE HAVE YOU DECIDED THAT DISTRICT STUDENTS HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT? I ASK YOU REGARDING THE UNTHINKABLE, WHICH SCENARIO WOULD YOU PREFER? A UNIFORMED LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER ASSIGNED TO AN IN A SCHOOL.

OR A FRANTIC STAFF MEMBER DIALING 911.

THANK YOU AND GOOD EVENING [APPLAUSE].

NEXT UP IS SANDRA ESCO.

GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS CASSANDRA ESCO AND I AM A TEACHER AT LYNNWOOD HIGH SCHOOL.

JUST A FEW WEEKS AGO, I WAS HERE AT THE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING WHILE A PRESENTATION WAS MADE REGARDING GRADUATION RATES.

WE HEARD THAT CURRENTLY ON TIME, GRADUATION RATES ARE JUST BELOW 85%, BUT THAT ALL HIGH SCHOOLS HAVE A SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN TO IMPROVE THOSE RATES TO 95% IN THE 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR.

ONE OF THE ITEMS MENTIONED WAS THAT THE DISTRICT WAS PROVIDING CREDIT RETRIEVAL AT ALL OF THE HIGH SCHOOLS.

I'M SORRY. THIS IS WHY I'M READING THIS.

CREDIT RETRIEVAL, FORMERLY KNOWN AS CLIP, IS A PROGRAM THAT I HAVE BEEN TEACHING SINCE 1998.

WHEN I STARTED IN THE DISTRICT.

PROVIDING THE STAFFING TO EACH BUILDING WAS ABOVE AND BEYOND THE STAFFING OF BASIC EDUCATION.

SOMETIME AROUND 2010 THIS CHANGED AND IT WAS LEFT TO BUILDINGS TO FUND CREDIT RETRIEVAL PROGRAMS USING THEIR BASIC

[00:45:08]

FUNDING. SEVERAL HIGH SCHOOLS GAVE UP THEIR PROGRAMS COMPLETELY.

IN THE PAST FEW YEARS SUDDENLY THESE PROGRAMS WERE BACK AND IT SOUNDED LIKE THE DISTRICT WAS ONCE MORE STEPPING UP AND FUNDING THIS PROGRAM IN ALL BUILDINGS. TODAY I FOUND OUT THIS IS NOT TRUE.

AT LYNNWOOD HIGH SCHOOL THE ADMINISTRATION IS LOOKING AT REMOVING AN ELECTIVE PSYCHOLOGY SIGNED UP FOR BY 64 STUDENTS IN ORDER TO COVER THE 0.2 STAFFING OF CREDIT RETRIEVAL.

0.2 STAFFING IS ONE CLASS PERIOD EACH SEMESTER OR 35 STUDENTS EACH SEMESTER, A REDUCTION FOR CREDIT RETRIEVAL OF 0.2 AS I CURRENTLY HAVE 71 STUDENTS AND HAD 69 LAST SEMESTER.

IN A PERFECT WORLD, STUDENTS WOULD PASS 100% OF THEIR CLASSES 100% OF THE TIME.

UNTIL THE SCHOOLS ARE FILLED WITH PERFECT TEENAGERS WE WILL NEED OPPORTUNITIES FOR CREDIT RETRIEVAL.

THE DISTRICT NEEDS TO PAY FOR THIS ABOVE AND BEYOND THE LIMITS OF BASIC EDUCATION ALLOCATION.

THANK YOU [APPLAUSE]. NEXT UP IS SANDRA HIGGINS. GOOD EVENING.

I THINK IT'S TIME WE REVISIT HAVING A POLICE OFFICER IN OUR SCHOOLS.

LAST WEEK A FRIEND OF MINE WHO'S A PARA EDUCATOR WAS ATTACKED BY A STUDENT AND NOW HAS A BROKEN SHOULDER AND A CONCUSSION.

SHE WAS A SHORT TIME AWAY FROM RETIREMENT, AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT'S GOING TO DO TO THAT NOW.

THE STUDENT WAS EXPELLED, BUT WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? DO THEY JUST GET EXPELLED FROM EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT FROM THAT PARTICULAR SCHOOL? WILL HE BE ATTENDING ANOTHER SCHOOL? PROBABLY. SO THESE STUDENTS, I THINK WE NEED TO REALLY LOOK AT THEM AND SCREEN THEM CAREFULLY AND WHILE SECURITY OFFICER IN A BUILDING CAN'T BE EVERY PLACE ALL THE TIME AND CAN'T PREVENT ACCIDENTS OR HARM FROM HAPPENING, I THINK THAT THEIR PRESENCE IS A DETERRENT.

AND I WORKED IN A SCHOOL THAT HAD A POLICE OFFICER, A SECURITY OFFICER THEY CALLED AND THE KIDS LIKED THEM BECAUSE THEY SAW THESE POLICEMEN NOT AS A UNIFORM BUT AS A PERSON, BUT AS A PERSON THAT WOULD HELP THEM.

SO WE HEARD OF THE TRAGIC EVENTS THAT HAPPENED IN NASHVILLE.

AND I WOULD JUST HOPE WE WOULD BE PROACTIVE THAT SOMETHING LIKE THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN HERE.

AND AS I WAS SITTING THERE, I WAS THINKING A FEW MONTHS AGO I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY OR THE MISSION TO DELIVER SOMETHING TO ONE OF OUR LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS.

I WALKED RIGHT IN.

NOBODY STOPPED ME.

NOBODY QUESTIONED ME.

I FEEL LIKE I COULD HAVE GONE ANY PLACE IN THE BUILDING AND CARRIED WHATEVER I HAD TO CARRY.

AND I DON'T THINK THAT'S TOO SAFE.

SO I WOULD ENCOURAGE YOU TO REALLY GIVE THAT SOME DISCUSSION AND REVISIT OUR SECURITY OFFICERS, THANK YOU [APPLAUSE].

AND NEXT UP IS SARAH DILLING.

SO I WAS LOOKING AT THE AGENDA TODAY AND GOING OVER IT AND FIGURING OUT WHAT I WANTED TO TO SPEAK TO YOU ABOUT THAT YOU WERE ABOUT TO DO BUSINESS ON.

AND THE THING THAT STUCK OUT TO ME WAS THE OUT OF AREA ASSIGNMENTS FOR CERTIFICATED STAFF FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR, AND THEY ALL SEEM TO BE AT THE SAME SCHOOL, WHICH IS SCRIBER LAKE, WHICH IS OUR ALTERNATIVE HIGH SCHOOL.

AND I WAS I WAS CURIOUS TO FIND OUT THE REASON WHY THERE ARE SO MANY OUT OF AREA ASSIGNMENTS AND PUZZLE PIECES BEING MOVED AROUND, WHETHER THEY LOST A TEACHER OR WHETHER THERE IS AN OVERSUBSCRIPTION OF STUDENTS FOR WHAT WE HAD PREVIOUSLY BUDGETED FOR OR WHAT.

SO I'M HOPING THAT WILL GET ADDRESSED AND WE CAN FIND OUT HOW TO MANAGE THINGS BETTER.

SO NEXT YEAR THEY'RE GETTING TAUGHT BY PEOPLE WHO KNOW THAT SUBJECT WELL ENOUGH TO GET CERTIFICATED IN IT.

I MEAN, I'M SURE AT A CERTAIN LEVEL ANYBODY CAN TEACH ALGEBRA, BUT CAN SOMEBODY TEACH ALGEBRA WELL, AND THAT'S THE GOAL, IS TO HAVE THE TEACHERS DOING WHAT THEY ARE, WHAT THEY ARE GREAT AT FOR THE STUDENTS.

[00:50:02]

THANK YOU [APPLAUSE].

THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY WHO CAME AND SPOKE.

NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS OUR CONSENT AGENDA.

[10. CONSENT AGENDA-7:45 pm]

TONIGHT, THE CONSENT AGENDA CONSISTS OF ELEVEN ITEMS. TWO ARE PERSONNEL.

TWO HAVE TO DO WITH THE GRADUATION ALLIANCE.

ONE HAS TO DO WITH TECHNOLOGY UPGRADE OF WIRELESS ACCESS POINTS.

ONE HAS TO DO WITH APPROVING OUR MONTHLY BILLS AND VOUCHERS, AND FIVE ARE FIELD TRIPS.

AND DO I HEAR A MOTION AND A SECOND TO APPROVE OUR CONSENT AGENDA FOR TONIGHT.

MOVE TO APPROVE.

I SECOND. I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND.

IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? I DID WANT TO POINT OUT WITH REGARD TO OUR CONTRACT WITH THE GRAD ALLIANCE, WHICH WILL BE TURNING OVER AGAIN, IS THAT IT WAS VERY GOOD TO SEE THAT OUR NUMBERS ARE IMPROVING OF THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS WHO ARE BEING SERVED BY THIS EXTRA GROUP THAT IS ABLE TO DO WORK THAT WE'RE NOT ABLE TO DO IN TERMS OF FOLLOWING UP STUDENTS WHO HAD DROPPED OUT OR HAD NOT GRADUATED AND ARE BRINGING THEM BACK AND HELPING THEM TO GET THE CREDITS AND FINISH THE REQUIREMENTS. SO THAT WAS REALLY GOOD TO SEE THAT THAT WE ARE SEEING IMPROVEMENT AND SOMETHING LIKE 68 STUDENTS CURRENTLY ARE ON THE PROCESS OF GETTING GRADUATED WHO HAD NOT BEEN GRADUATED THROUGH THAT.

SO WE WE ARE FINDING SUCCESS IN THAT REGARD.

SO. IS THERE ANY OTHER COMMENT? OKAY. I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE.

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF APPROVING TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED, PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE, AYE.

AND I SEE SOME RAISED HANDS AS WELL.

THANK YOU. AND ALL THOSE OPPOSED SAY NAY.

AND ANY ABSTENTIONS? AND THE CONSENT AGENDA FOR TONIGHT IS APPROVED.

NEXT, WE HAVE NEW BUSINESS.

[11. NEW BUSINESS- 8:00 pm]

I'LL TURN THAT OVER TO SUPERINTENDENT MINER.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. WE HAVE TWO RESOLUTIONS THIS EVENING, BOTH SINGLE READINGS UNDER NEW BUSINESS.

THE FIRST IS SINGLE READING RESOLUTION 23-04 REDIRECTION OF SELECTED LEASE AND RENTAL EARNINGS TO THE GENERAL FUND.

THIS IS UNDER OUR CW.

WE'RE ALLOWED TO CERTAIN MONIES DERIVED FROM REAL PROPERTY TO BE DIVERTED FROM THE CAPITAL PROJECTS FUND TO GENERAL FUNDS.

AND THESE DIVERTED FUNDS HAVE TO BE USED FOR NON-RECURRING COSTS.

AND SO SPECIFICALLY, THIS IS RELATED TO CELL TOWERS.

EXCELLENT. THANK YOU FOR THAT BACKGROUND.

DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND FOR APPROVING RESOLUTION 23-04, WHICH IS A DIRECTION OF SELECTED LEASE AND RENTAL EARNINGS TO OUR GENERAL FUND.

I MOVE TO APPROVE.

SECOND. I HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND.

IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE. I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.

DIRECTOR SMITH.

DIRECTOR NOBLE, AYE.

DIRECTOR CHASE.

OKAY. DR. KILGORE, AYE.

THANK YOU.

DIRECTOR KATIMS, AYE.

AND THE RESOLUTION 2304 REDIRECTING SELECTED LEASE AND RENTAL EARNINGS TO OUR GENERAL FUND IS APPROVED.

THE SECOND RESOLUTION THIS EVENING 11.2 IS A SINGLE READING TO APPROVE OAK HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL REPLACEMENT [INAUDIBLE] NEW IN LIEU OF MODERNIZATION.

RESOLUTION NUMBER 23-05.

DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND? MOVE TO APPROVE.

I SECOND. I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND.

IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? SO I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT IT IS BECAUSE OF THE 2021 LEVY.

AND WE'RE, AS ALWAYS, VERY GRATEFUL TO OUR VOTERS THAT ALLOWS US TO BE ABLE TO ACTUALLY REBUILD OAK HEIGHTS INSTEAD OF JUST SIMPLY, QUOTE, MODERNIZING IT. I THINK IT'S AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT IMPROVEMENT TO OUR CAPABILITY.

ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE.

I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.

DIRECTOR SMITH. DIRECTOR NOBLE, AYE.

DIRECTOR CHASE.

DIRECTOR KILGORE, AYE.

DIRECTOR KATIMS, AYE.

AND THE RESOLUTION 23-05 TO APPROVE OAK HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL REPLACEMENT IN LIEU OF MODERNIZATION IS

[00:55:07]

APPROVED. WE DON'T HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL PUBLIC COMMENTS.

SO NEXT, WE HAVE OUR LEGISLATIVE UPDATE.

[13. LEGISLATIVE UPDATES]

I'M NOT SURE. SO CARIN CAN'T REALLY.

I CAN DO A LITTLE BIT ON THIS THIS EVENING.

THE SENATE RELEASED THEIR BUDGET ON 323 AND IT WAS A LITTLE BIT BETTER THAN WE HAD EXPECTED THINGS MIGHT BE.

OF COURSE, THERE'S STILL THINGS TO WORK OUT NOW BETWEEN THE SENATE AND THE LEGISLATURE.

THE LEGISLATURE RELEASED THEIRS ON 328 AND TO BE HONEST, I HAVEN'T HAD A CHANCE TO REALLY TAKE A DEEP DIVE OR REALLY ANY KIND OF A DIVE INTO THAT YET. BUT WE'RE HOPING THAT THERE ARE SOME POSITIVE THINGS IN THAT ONE AS WELL FOR US.

AND I HAVE A COUPLE OF MESSAGES FROM DIRECTOR CHASE THAT I WILL SHARE WITH YOU.

ONE HAS TO DO WITH REMINDING ALL OF THE BOARD MEMBERS THAT COMING UP ON THURSDAY, APRIL 20TH AT 8 P.M. IS THE DIRECTOR AREA ONE REGIONAL MEETING THAT'S HOSTED BY THE MOUNT VERNON SCHOOL DISTRICT THAT WILL HELP US DISCUSS THE KINDS OF PRIORITIES THAT WE HAVE FOR WSSDA.

SHE'S ALSO SHARED FROM WSSDA A SURPRISING AMENDMENT PASSED YESTERDAY IMPACTING SENATE BILL 5102.

THE SCHOOL LIBRARY PROGRAM BILL.

THE AMENDMENT READS IF YOU ARE A DISTRICT WITH MORE THAN 2,000 STUDENTS AND WE ARE BY FAR THIS BILL WOULD NOW REQUIRE YOU TO HIRE AT LEAST ONE CERTIFIED TEACHER LIBRARIAN FOR EVERY THOUSAND STUDENTS.

HOW WOULD THIS IMPACT US? CONCERNED THAT YOUR LEGISLATORS ON HOUSE APPROPRIATIONS KNOW BEFORE IT IS HEARD ON COMMITTEE, WHICH IS LIKELY NEXT WEEK.

THAT'S A BUDGET CONCERN.

THANK YOU, DIRECTOR CHASE.

OKAY. ANY OTHER INPUT IN TERMS OF LEGISLATION OTHER THAN ANOTHER UNFUNDED MANDATE TO DEAL WITH? OKAY, SO WE'RE AT BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS.

[14. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS]

OHANA WOULD YOU LIKE TO START? OKAY, THAT'S FINE.

YOU DON'T NEED TO START. IF YOU.

IF YOU WANT US TO COME BACK TO YOU, LET US KNOW.

SADIE. IT DOESN'T MOVE, BUT YOU HAVE TO PUSH THE BUTTON.

IN THE MIDDLE. IN THE MIDDLE.

THERE YOU GO. OKAY, GREAT.

UM. YEAH.

SO. HI.

UM, I JUST REALLY WANT TO GET STARTED ON WHAT YOU SAID WITH THE POLICE OFFICERS.

UM, THEY.

WHEN I WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, WE HAD AN SRQ, IF THAT IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY.

UM, AND I BECAME REALLY GOOD FRIENDS LIKE ME AND MY FRIENDS WERE REALLY GOOD FRIENDS WITH THEM.

UM, AND JUST BEING ABLE TO HAVE THAT PROTECTION WAS REALLY NICE.

BUT I GOT TO UNDERSTAND THAT THERE'S A LOT MORE OTHER CONCERNS WITH DIFFERENT RACES AND HOW WE'RE ACTUALLY FACING, UM, JUST ALL THESE SHOOTINGS.

AND I GUESS THE PRIORITY OF A SCHOOL IS MORE IMPORTANT IN THAT WAY.

AND IT'S JUST THAT THERE'S MORE SCHOOL SHOOTINGS HAPPENING IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND IN HIGH SCHOOLS, AND IT'S JUST REALLY NERVE WRACKING THAT LAST YEAR IT HAPPENED AT EDMONDS-WOODWAY AND MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HAD LIKE A SCHOOL THREAT THAT WE TOOK CARE OF.

BUT IT JUST, I DON'T KNOW, IT'S JUST WANTING TO HAVE THAT SECURITY TAKEN AS A PRIORITY RATHER THAN JUST LIKE KIND OF GOING AROUND IT AND GETTING LIKE EMAILS ABOUT IT OR LIKE NOTES OR SAYING THAT, OH, THIS HAPPENED, BUT WE'RE TAKING CARE OF IT, BUT JUST NOT SEEING MORE ACTION ON IT.

OR THAT'S JUST MOSTLY MY CONCERN.

AND IF WE CAN REALLY FIND A WAY TO, UM I DON'T KNOW, MAKE IT A PRIORITY AND NOT LIKE ALL THE SCHOOLS.

THAT WOULD BE JUST BE MORE REASSURING FOR ME.

UM, AND JUST WITH THE MADRONA KIDS SEEING THE LEADERSHIP EVEN IN MIDDLE SCHOOLS, WAS REALLY AMAZING.

AND SADIE, THE OTHER SADIE, UM, WITH HER SAYING THAT SHE'S GOING TO BE GOING TO MOUNTLAKE TERRACE.

LIKE, I KIND OF FELT SOME SENSE OF PRIDE AND BE LIKE, WHOA, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A, LIKE, FRESHMAN NEXT YEAR, ARE GOING TO HAVE A REALLY GOOD LEADER.

[01:00:07]

AND JUST SEEING MIDDLE SCHOOLS PREPARING FUTURE LEADERS FOR HIGH SCHOOL WAS REALLY AMAZING SO.

THANK YOU SO MUCH, PETER.

UM. HI. LONG TIME NO SEE.

I AGREE WITH WHAT A LOT OF SADIE SAID.

IT REALLY STRUCK ME WHEN YOU MENTIONED THAT YOU WERE ABLE TO JUST WALK IN.

BECAUSE WHEN WE HAVE OUR LUNCH AT LYNNWOOD, IT'S JUST THE OPEN AGORA.

AND, YOU KNOW, THE DOORS ARE UNLOCKED BECAUSE STUDENTS ARE WELCOME TO EAT OUTSIDE IF THE WEATHER'S NICE.

AND, YOU KNOW, SOMETIMES ME AND MY FRIENDS WILL THINK ABOUT, YOU KNOW, SOMEONE ANYONE COULD JUST WALK IN THROUGH THOSE DOORS AND WE'D HAVE NO IDEA.

SO I DEFINITELY THINK THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE SHOULD START LOOKING AT A LITTLE CLOSER.

AND I DO AGREE. I DO WISH THERE WAS A LITTLE BIT MORE OF AN ACTION PIECE BECAUSE A LOT OF THE STUFF THAT GOES ON AT MY SCHOOL, I FIND OUT ABOUT 2 OR 3 DAYS LATER IN A NEWSLETTER THAT'S EXPLAINING WHAT HAPPENED AND THEN SAYING IT'S BEEN TAKEN CARE OF, BUT THERE'S NO REAL FOLLOW UP OR ANYTHING ELSE TO REALLY REASSURE YOU THAT, OH, WE'RE IN A SECURE LOCATION OR WHATEVER.

AND I DON'T THINK KIDS I DON'T THINK IT HELPS THEIR SENSE OF BELONGING IF THEY'RE WORRIED ABOUT THEIR SAFETY.

YEAH. AND THEN I HAD A QUESTION FOR THE BOARD IN LIGHTER, A LITTLE BIT LIGHTER NEWS.

I'M WORKING WITH TWO OF MY FRIENDS TO INSTALL A MURAL AT MY SCHOOL AND I DIDN'T KNOW IF THAT NEEDED TO BE SCHOOL BOARD APPROVED BECAUSE AS I'M LIKE, WE'RE IN OUR PLANNING STAGE RIGHT NOW. SO I DIDN'T KNOW IF THAT WAS SOMETHING THAT NEEDED TO BE SCHOOL BOARD APPROVED OR IF THAT WAS A BUILDING SPECIFIC.

I SEE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT SCHWAB RAISING HIS HAND, AND I'M GOING TO GUESS THAT WOULD GO THROUGH MAINTENANCE AND FACILITIES TO GET THEIR THOUGHTS ON THAT FIRST.

AWESOME. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

THAT'S GREAT, THOUGH. WHAT'S THE MURAL GOING TO BE ABOUT? WE ARE A VERY DIVERSE SCHOOL, SO WE'RE WANTING TO BRING IN THIS IDEA OF BELONGING AND BRINGING IN A LOT OF DIFFERENT, I THINK, CULTURAL ASPECTS.

AND THEN WE ALSO HAVE A LOT OF AMAZING PROGRAMS LIKE OUR MUSIC PROGRAMS, REALLY AMAZING AND ALL THESE DIFFERENT THINGS.

AND I'M LEAVING IT UP TO THESE TWO GIRLS FOR NOW FOR THE DESIGN BECAUSE THEY ARE SOME OF THE MOST TALENTED ARTISTS I'VE SEEN.

AND I KNOW THAT WE HAVE A LOT OF REALLY GREAT TALENT IN OUR SCHOOL, AND SO I'M JUST REALLY EXCITED TO CREATE THIS OPPORTUNITY FOR THEM TO GET INVOLVED AND HAVE THEIR WORK SEEN AND HOPEFULLY INSPIRE, YOU KNOW, FRESHMEN WHO ARE COMING IN THAT, OH, THERE'S A MURAL, THAT MEANS I COULD PROBABLY DO THIS.

AND THEN THEY FILL UP ALL THESE UGLY BRICK WALLS AT MY SCHOOL WITH SOME REALLY PRETTY ART, SO.

THAT SOUNDS GREAT. I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING IT WHEN IT'S DONE.

ELIZABETH. GOOD AFTERNOON, GUYS.

I WOULD LIKE TO SAY JUST A LITTLE QUICK THING THAT I WANTED TO MENTION.

MY LSU CLUB AT MEADOWDALE IS HOSTING A MOD FUNDRAISER ON APRIL 26TH.

IF YOU GUYS WOULD LIKE TO GO TO THE MOD FUNDRAISER ON 164TH AND JUST TELL THEM THAT YOU'RE WITH LSU.

THEY WOULD GIVE US LIKE 20% OF THEIR PROCEEDS TOWARDS OUR CLUB, WHICH WAS RAISED FOR LIKE MORE FUNDRAISERS FOR US TO HOST AND OTHER FUN THINGS.

BUT CAN YOU TELL US AGAIN WHERE THAT IS? IT'S THE MOD PIZZA ON 164TH.

YOU JUST HAVE TO LIKE, EITHER TELL THEM THAT YOU'RE WITH MEADOWDALE OR WE'LL HAVE FLYERS POSTED UP ON OUR SOCIAL ACCOUNTS AND YOU CAN JUST SHOW THEM THE FLYER AND THEN THEY'LL JUST HAVE US GIVE US 20% OF WHATEVER YOUR PURCHASE IS.

WHAT'S THE DATE AGAIN? APRIL 26TH.

AND IT'S ALL DAY. SO FROM OPENING AND CLOSING.

I WOULD LIKE TO SAY IT'S INTERESTING THAT IT'S MENTIONED THAT POSTERS ARE CONSIDERED LEFT OR RIGHT, BECAUSE I DON'T NECESSARILY THINK A POSTER SAYING LIKE, OH, YOU BELONG HERE BECAUSE WE GENUINELY HAVE POSTERS THAT SAY YOU BELONG HERE OR HAVE A GOOD DAY TODAY.

HAVE A GOOD LIKE ASK FOR HELP IF YOU NEED OR SUCH POSTERS THAT ARE JUST ENCOURAGING MESSAGES.

I DON'T BELIEVE THOSE POSTERS ARE GENERALLY LEFT OR RIGHT OR I DON'T EVER THINK IT'S A POLITICAL TO HAVE A POSTER UP ON OUR CAMPUS THAT SAYS ANYTHING HONESTLY, IT'S IT'S JUST A MESSAGE TO HELP OUR STUDENTS.

AND THERE'S NO THERE'S NOT A BIAS TOWARDS ANY POLITICAL SIDE.

AND I THINK IT'S INTERESTING THAT TEACHERS THINK THAT LIKE THERE IS OR THAT THEY'RE LIKE STUDENTS HAVE A BIAS TOWARDS THE POLITICAL SIDE BECAUSE PEOPLE HAVE THEIR OWN PREFERENCE, OF COURSE, BUT NOBODY IS IMPLEMENTING THAT TOWARDS THE STUDENTS IN OUR CLASSROOMS. AND I THINK TEACHERS MAKE IT VERY CLEAR TO US, ESPECIALLY TEACHERS IN LIKE THE HIGHER, HIGHER CLASSES, LIKE THE SENIOR

[01:05:05]

CLASSES, THE JUNIOR CLASSES MAKE IT KNOWN THAT THERE IS NO POLITICAL AGENDA.

THERE WILL BE MANY SIDES IN THE WORLD ONCE YOU ENTER.

AND SO HAVING THAT LIKE, MIXED SORT OF IDEAS IS JUST PART OF HIGH SCHOOL.

LIKE PEOPLE WILL HAVE DIFFERENT IDEAS FROM YOU AND IN SOCIETY.

BUT TO SAY THAT THERE'S A DIFFERENCE IN HOW OUR SCHOOLS ARE RUN BECAUSE PEOPLE THE TEACHERS ARE TRYING TO IMPLEMENT THIS LEFTIST SORT OF IDEA IS HONESTLY RIDICULOUS BECAUSE I THINK WE'RE JUST ALL TRYING TO GET THE STUDENTS FOR TO DO ONE THING, WHICH IS TO LEARN AND TO FEEL LIKE THEY BELONG THERE, THAT THEY WANT TO COME TO SCHOOL TO LEARN INSTEAD OF BEING FORCED TO, INSTEAD OF IT HAVING TO BE A 7 A.M.

TO LIKE 1:58-1:50 P.M.

SORT OF THING. IT'S SORT OF LIKE, OH, I GET TO GO LEARN AND I GET TO I HAVE THE PRIVILEGE TO AND I GET TO SEE FRIENDS LIKE AND I THINK THAT'S WHAT WE SHOULD BE FOCUSING MORE, MORE ON THAN LIKE, OH, THEY HAVE THIS SET AGENDA AGAINST US OR LIKE A CERTAIN GROUP, LIKE, NO, THERE'S NOTHING LIKE THAT.

IT'S JUST LEARNING STRAIGHT UP.

AND ONE OF THE ONE OF THE TOPICS THAT WAS ADDRESSED TONIGHT WAS SAFETY.

AND MY FRESHMAN YEAR WE HAD A SRS OFFICER CALLED HUBBY.

A LOT OF PEOPLE LIKED HIM, BUT A LOT OF PEOPLE ALSO FELT CONCERNED THAT HUBBY MIGHT OR THAT ANY OFFICER LIKE THAT THEY WOULD HAVE WITH ANY OFFICER RIGHT, WHICH IS VALID AND THAT'S WHY WE REMOVED THEM.

BUT WITH RECENT NEWS OF A LOT OF SCHOOL SHOOTINGS, I WOULD UNDERSTAND THAT STUDENTS WOULD WANT A SAFE SAFETY PATROL OFFICER ON CAMPUS.

AND I DO THINK IT'S A VALID CONCERN BECAUSE WE HAVE AT MEADOWDALE SAFETY PATROL OFFICERS ON CAMPUS AND WE HAVE SEEN A DECLINE IN INCIDENTS OCCURRING.

BUT I THINK IT GOES MORE AND MORE ABOVE IT JUST BEING BRING POLICE OFFICERS ON CAMPUS.

IT GOES ON AND ON LIKE THE ROOT.

THE ROOT OF IT WILL BE WHAT ACTION ARE WE TAKING AS A SOCIETY TO STOP THIS FROM EVEN OCCURRING? LIKE TO STOP US FROM EVEN HAVING TO PUT THESE PREVENTIONS IN PLACE? WHAT ARE WE DOING TO STOP PEOPLE FROM OBTAINING GUNS, LIKE GOING INTO CLASSROOMS AND, YOU KNOW, ULTIMATELY KILLING PEOPLE? LIKE WE HAVE TO ASK OURSELVES, THERE'S ONLY SO MUCH WE CAN DO TO PROTECT THE STUDENTS, BUT WE GENUINELY WOULDN'T HAVE TO IMPLEMENT ANY OF THESE THINGS IF WE WORKED AS A SOCIETY TO WORK HARDER TO STOP PEOPLE FROM EVEN HAVING ACCESS TO THESE HARMFUL ASSAULT RIFLES THAT ULTIMATELY HAVE CAUSED MORE SCHOOL SHOOTINGS THAN THEY HAVE IN ANY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD.

AS A SOCIETY, WE'RE FAILING OUR STUDENTS.

WE'RE FAILING TO PROTECT OUR STUDENTS.

THERE SHOULDN'T BE A TALK ABOUT WE NEED TO, LIKE, BRING IN MORE SRS OFFICERS.

NO, WE SHOULD BE HAVING A TALK ABOUT TO OUR CONGRESSMEN AND TELLING THEM WE NEED PROTECTION FOR OUR STUDENTS.

AND THAT MEANS PROTECTING THEM AGAINST ASSAULT RIFLES, PROTECTING THEM AGAINST PEOPLE WHO WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO OUR COMMUNITIES.

AND WE SAW THAT HAPPEN IN NASHVILLE.

AND UNFORTUNATELY, THAT WAS SUCH AN UNFORTUNATE CIRCUMSTANCE.

AND THERE WILL BE A TALK ABOUT ADDING MORE SECURITY, MORE SECURITY, MORE SECURITY, BUT MORE SECURITY WILL ONLY GET YOU ONE PLACE AT THE END OF THE DAY, YOU HAVE TO GO TO THE ROOT OF IT. THANK YOU [APPLAUSE].

VERY WELL SAID THANK YOU.

AND I'M GOING TO START WITH THE BOARD MEMBERS, BUT I'M GOING TO ASK DR.

CHASE, DIRECTOR CHASE AND DIRECTOR SMITH IF YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS.

IF YOU WANT TO TEXT THEM TO ME, I'D BE HAPPY TO READ THEM.

OHANA DID YOU WANT TO COME BACK? NO, YOU'RE GOOD.

WE'RE GLAD YOU'RE HERE.

THANKS FOR HAVING ME DO THAT.

SO, DIRECTOR NOBLE.

YEAH. WELL, FIRST OF ALL, I WANT TO THANK MADRONA AND THE TWO STUDENTS THAT DID THE PRESENTATION.

THEY SHOULD BE REALLY PROUD OF THEMSELVES.

WE'VE SEEN A LOT OF STUDENT PRESENTATIONS AND I THINK THAT'S THE VERY FIRST ONE WHERE THE STUDENTS WEREN'T EVEN INTRODUCED.

THEY STEPPED UP, THEY DID THEIR PRESENTATION ALL BY THEMSELVES, INTRODUCED THEMSELVES, AND BASICALLY RAN THE WHOLE PRESENTATION WITHOUT A SINGLE ADULT EVEN TOUCHING IT.

SO THEY SHOULD BE VERY PROUD OF THAT.

I WANT TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE FOUNDATION FOR EDMONDS PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

WE HAD A STUDY SESSION WITH THEM, A JOINT MEETING WITH THEM JUST BEFORE THIS MEETING.

AND ONE OF THE THINGS WE DID IS WE LOOKED AT ALL THE PROGRAMS THAT THE FOUNDATION IS FUNDING AND TO SEE HOW THEY WERE ALIGNED WITH OUR STRATEGIC PLAN.

AND IT TURNS OUT THAT REALLY QUITE WELL ALIGNED AND THEY'RE REALLY SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS.

WE SHOULD BE VERY, VERY THANKFUL FOR THIS ORGANIZATION.

THERE ARE $1 MILLION ORGANIZATION NOW.

THEY RAISE SLIGHTLY OVER $1 MILLION AND THAT GOES DIRECTLY TO OUR STUDENTS.

[01:10:01]

ANYTHING FROM FEEDING OUR HOMELESS STUDENTS ON WEEKENDS, TO PROVIDING SCHOLARSHIPS, PAYING FOR PSAT, TESTS AND JUST A WHOLE, WHOLE RANGE OF THINGS, EVEN PAID INTERNSHIPS FOR SOME OF OUR STUDENTS. SO BIG SHOUT OUT TO THE FOUNDATION.

WE JUST REALLY, REALLY APPRECIATE THE SUPPORT THEY GIVE OUR SCHOOLS.

THAT'S ALL I HAVE. THANK YOU, DIRECTOR KILGORE.

WELL, JUST BRIEFLY, I HAD A LOVELY VISIT WITH LYNNWOOD ELEMENTARY TODAY AND I AM ALWAYS SO PLEASED TO VISIT OUR SCHOOLS.

AND LYNNWOOD IN PARTICULAR IS A GEM.

WONDERFUL STAFF, WONDERFUL TEACHERS, WONDERFUL PRINCIPAL, WONDERFUL BUILDING THANKS TO OUR TAXPAYERS.

AND I JUST COULD NOT COULD NOT BE MORE PLEASED TO SEE SUCH A HAPPY PLACE WHERE STUDENTS REALLY WANT TO BE IS THE BEST PLACE THEY WANT FOR THEM TO BE.

AND IN ADDITION, I JUST WANTED TO TALK ABOUT LET ME GO BACK TO MY NOTES.

THE BOARD HAS LEARNED I HOPE I'M ALLOWED TO GIVE THIS AWAY, THAT THE DISTRICT IS NOW STOCKING EPIPENS.

AND I JUST THINK THAT IS A WONDERFUL THING.

AND I KNOW EARLIER IN THE YEAR I PROBABLY TALKED ABOUT WHEN I WAS AMONG MY COLLEAGUES ADVOCATING FOR OUR STUDENT, OUR SCHOOL BASED HEALTH CENTER, THAT THERE ARE SUCH BASIC THINGS THAT PREVENT OUR STUDENTS FROM GETTING ACCESS TO THIS HIGH QUALITY EDUCATION THAT WE HAVE HERE. AND AMONG THOSE ARE MEDICAL SERVICES.

AND WE'VE HEARD FROM STAFF WHO TOLD US THAT SO MANY OF OUR STUDENTS LOSE TIME TO JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE A TOOTHACHE.

BUT I LEARNED FIRSTHAND THAT IN ADDITION, STUDENTS WHO HAVE A LIFE THREATENING ALLERGY, WHO CAN'T AFFORD TO BRING THEIR EPIPENS LOSE TIME IN SCHOOL.

AND I MET A STUDENT EARLY IN THE YEAR WHO LOST HIS FIRST THREE WEEKS OF HIS SCHOOL YEAR BECAUSE HIS FAMILY COULDN'T AFFORD AN EPIPEN.

AND SO AND THIS STUDENT VERY MUCH NEEDED TO BE THERE FOR THOSE FIRST THREE WEEKS.

SO I AM JUST SO PLEASED TO SEE THAT OUR OUR SCHOOL BASED HEALTH CENTER AND OUR PARTNERS AND OUR STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES HAVE ALL GOTTEN TOGETHER AND MADE IT POSSIBLE.

AND I GUESS THE BIO RIDGE PHARMA HAS GIFTED US A NUMBER OF EPIPENS TO KEEP IN THE DISTRICT.

AND SO I JUST WANT TO THANK EVERYONE FOR ALL THE HARD WORK AND AND LET YOU KNOW THAT THIS IS GOING TO MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE.

AND FROM THE TEACHER WHO WHO TOLD ME ABOUT HIS STUDENT, HE THINKS IT'LL BE HUNDREDS OF INSTRUCTIONAL HOURS EVERY YEAR THAT WE'LL GET BACK. SO SO KUDOS.

THESE ARE THE KINDS OF PROBLEMS THAT I LOVE TO SEE US SOLVE.

SO THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

SO I WILL SHARE MESSAGES FROM OUR BOARD MEMBERS WHO ARE VIRTUAL AND WHO ARE NON-VERBAL VIRTUAL.

DIRECTOR CHASE SAYS SHE LOOKS FORWARD TO BEING BACK IN PERSON AT THE NEXT MEETING.

AND WE CERTAINLY LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AS WELL.

DIRECTOR SMITH SAYS THAT HE WILL PASS ON FULL COMMENTS.

HE WANTS TO GIVE A THANK YOU TO THE STUDENTS WHO PRESENTED AND HE WANTS TO RESTATE THAT IN LIGHT OF NASHVILLE, WE ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO IMPROVE STUDENT SAFETY, BUT IT WON'T BE ANY ONE ANSWER.

THERE WILL BE LOTS OF PIECES THAT NEED TO BE ADDRESSED.

SO THANK YOU TO BOTH OF YOU FOR WEIGHING IN.

FOR MY COMMENTS I'D LIKE TO SHARE A FEW THINGS THAT HAVE HAPPENED SINCE THE LAST SCHOOL BOARD MEETING A WEEK AGO.

THE BOARD MET FOR AN ENTIRE DAY IN A FULL DAY RETREAT AND WE SPENT OVER THREE HOURS LOOKING AT OUR BOARD GOALS AND A GREAT DEAL OF DATA AND LOOKING TO SEE WHAT PROGRESS WE'VE MADE ON ON OUR GOALS BASED ON THE DATA THAT WE WENT INTO IN GREAT DEPTH AND WHAT WE CAN DO TO ADDRESS BOTH.

WE NOTED OUR AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT AND CELEBRATED AND ALSO THE AREAS THAT WE FEEL LIKE WE NEED TO GIVE MORE ATTENTION TO.

SO I THINK THAT WAS A VERY, VERY IMPORTANT EXERCISE THAT WE DID, THAT WE WILL DO ANNUALLY, IF NOT TWICE A YEAR OR MORE.

WE ALSO DISCUSSED DR.

MINER'S ENTRY PLAN AND WE'RE VERY, VERY PLEASED WITH SHE GAVE US WHAT, THE FIRST 180 DAYS APPROXIMATELY IN HER BECOMING THE FULL, REAL PERMANENT SUPERINTENDENT.

AND WE'RE QUITE PLEASED WE GAVE SUGGESTIONS, BUT IT WAS A VERY ROBUST AND STRONG ENTRY PLAN WE THINK.

[01:15:06]

WE ALSO DISCUSSED THE BUDGET, OBVIOUSLY THROUGH THE BUDGET PRESENTATIONS THAT OUR DISTRICT LEADERSHIP HAS SHARED WITH THE PUBLIC AND WITH US.

WE KNOW THAT THERE WILL BE CUTS TO OUR BUDGET.

WE ARE UNFORTUNATELY AT A DISADVANTAGE BECAUSE OF NOT ENOUGH FUNDING FROM THE STATE AND PART OF OUR DISCUSSION WAS TRYING TO COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS THAT WILL MINIMIZE IMPACTS TO THE CLASSROOM BECAUSE THAT IS ALWAYS OUR GOAL.

SO WE DID A FEW OTHER HOUSEKEEPING THINGS, BUT IT WAS A VERY PRODUCTIVE RETREAT.

I ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT SPRUCE ELEMENTARY AND SAW A LOT OF HAPPY AND ENGAGED STUDENTS AND STAFF IN A BEAUTIFUL NEW BUILDING.

AND REGARDING THE FOUNDATION THAT DIRECTOR NOBLE MENTIONED, I WANTED TO MENTION, FIRST OF ALL, THEY HAD AN EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT SET OF PRESENTATIONS AT THEIR ANNUAL BREAKFAST, WHICH I ATTENDED VIRTUAL, SO THAT I WOULDN'T GIVE PEOPLE MY COLD.

BUT ALSO WE JUST HAD A STUDY SESSION WITH THEM THAT WAS DESIGNED TO HELP US WORK TOGETHER TO LOOK AT THE ALIGNMENT BETWEEN THE THINGS THAT THE FOUNDATION HAS BEEN SUPPORTING US ON AND OUR STRATEGIC PLAN AND THE GOALS IN OUR STRATEGIC PLAN.

LOOK FOR WHERE THERE'S ALIGNMENT AND LOOK FOR WHERE WE CAN PERHAPS FILL IN GAPS MORE WITH OUR FOUNDATION SUPPORT ON THINGS THAT THE DISTRICT ISN'T ABLE TO DO.

SO THAT PARTNERSHIP IS JUST CRITICAL TO HELPING THE DISTRICT IN WAYS THAT WE'RE NOT ABLE TO DO, GIVEN THE LIMITED KINDS OF RESOURCES THAT WE MIGHT HAVE. AND WE JUST REALLY, REALLY APPRECIATE THE SUPPORT THAT THE FOUNDATION GIVES TO OUR STUDENTS, OUR STAFF AND OUR FAMILIES AND COMMUNITY.

AND I'LL TURN IT OVER TO DR.

MINER. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

A UNIQUE THINGS THAT I'VE DONE THAT I'VE NEVER DONE BEFORE.

I ATTENDED MY FIRST EVER BINGO NIGHT AT SPRUCE.

I DON'T KNOW HOW I'VE MISSED BINGO NIGHTS ALWAYS.

I DID NOT WIN, BUT I DIDN'T PLAY.

SO I HELPED OTHER PEOPLE WHEN THEY CALLED BINGO, BE IDENTIFIED AS WINNERS.

SO IT WAS. IT WAS GREAT FUN.

VERY WELL ATTENDED.

GOOD PROBLEM TO HAVE. WE WERE SETTING UP TABLES AND PULLING OUT MORE CHAIRS EVEN AS THE EVENT WAS STARTING.

SO IT WAS AN AMAZING TURNOUT.

REALLY SPEAKS TO ME ABOUT HOW EXCITED KIDS ARE TO GET INTO THEIR SCHOOLS AND DO THESE THINGS, WHICH THEY DIDN'T HAVE A CHANCE TO DO IN SUCH A LONG, LONG TIME.

VERY EXCITED ABOUT THE ENTRY PLAN THIS WEEK.

I DID ROLL THAT ALSO PAST THE EDMONDS EDUCATORS OF COLOR NETWORK, AND THEY WERE VERY KIND TO GIVE ME SOME OTHER.

ONE OF THE THINGS I TALK ABOUT IN THE ENTRY PLAN IS SOMETHING CALLED THE SNOWBALL.

AND SO AS I MEET WITH GROUPS AND I LEARN ABOUT OTHER GROUPS TO MEET WITH AND THEY WERE A GROUP I MET WITH AND THEY'VE GIVEN ME A LOT OF OTHERS TO FOLLOW UP ON.

WE'LL BE STARTING AFTER THE BREAK A WEB PAGE WHERE PEOPLE WILL BE ABLE TO TRACK IN MUCH THE SAME WAY AS WE DID WITH THE AIR REVIEW.

THEY'LL BE ABLE TO TRACK WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH THE ENTRY PLAN.

WHERE ARE WE, WHAT ARE THE NUMBERS? AND THERE WILL BE MANY POINTS AT WHICH STAFF MEMBERS, COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO ENGAGE WITH ME AROUND THAT WORK.

SO I'M REALLY EXCITED TO GET THAT GOING.

I RAN MY FIRST PROTOCOL THIS WEEK WITH THE TECH GROUP AND WAS APPRECIATIVE TO THEM FOR THEIR FEEDBACK.

AND SO COMMENTS ARE STARTING TO ROLL IN AND IT'S UNDERWAY.

EXCELLENT. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

AND THEN THE LAST THING ON OUR AGENDA, AS ALWAYS, IS TO FIND OUT FROM THE OTHER BOARD MEMBERS, ARE THERE TOPICS OR ITEMS THAT WE NEED TO CONSIDER, GET ON AN AGENDA FOR FUTURE DISCUSSION OR THAT YOU'D LIKE MORE INFORMATION ON? THE STUDENTS CAN ALSO WEIGH IN ON THAT AS WELL.

EVERYBODY GOOD? ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY.

THIS REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING OF THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF DIRECTORS IS NOW ADJOURNED.
