WE'RE JUST SO THRILLED TONIGHT TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CELEBRATE THESE TEACHERS.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH THE NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFICATION PROCESS, THIS IS A PROCESS THAT INVOLVES DEEP SELF-STUDY ON THE PART OF THE TEACHERS AND REALLY COUNTLESS HOURS OF WORK IF THEY COUNTED THEM.

I'M SURE IT'S INTO THE HUNDREDS BY FAR, BECAUSE THIS IS A HUGE PROCESS AND WE CELEBRATE THESE TEACHERS WHO UNDERTAKE THIS WORK TO IMPROVE THEIR PRACTICE ON BEHALF OF OUR STUDENTS.

SO WE'LL CALL YOU UP ONE AT A TIME AND GET YOUR PICTURE WITH THE BOARD.

OUR SCHOOL RETIREES OBVIOUSLY HAVE DEVOTED THEIR CAREERS TO PUBLIC EDUCATION.

I'D LIKE TO READ THE GOVERNOR'S PROCLAMATION.

IN JUST A FEW WEEKS, I'LL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRESENT TO THE SNOW KING RETIREES.

AT ONE OF THEIR MEETINGS. THEY WERE INTERESTED IN HEARING ABOUT THE CAMINO JOURNEY I UNDERTOOK LAST YEAR, SO I'LL BE DOING A PRESENTATION FOR THEM ON THAT.

SO FROM GOVERNOR JAY INSLEE.

WHEREAS WASHINGTON STATE RECOGNIZES THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF ALL RETIRED SCHOOL EMPLOYEES.

AND. WHEREAS, IT IS IMPORTANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATING AND ASSISTING ASSISTING SCHOOL RETIREES IN MEETING THE SPECIAL CHALLENGES RETIREMENT BRINGS AND WORK TO IMPROVE THEIR GENERAL WELFARE WELFARE.

AND. WHEREAS, SCHOOL RETIREES AND ORGANIZATIONS LIKE THE WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL RETIREES ASSOCIATION AID IN ADVANCING EDUCATION BY SUPPORTING HIGH EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS. AND.

WHEREAS, SCHOOL RETIREE ORGANIZATIONS PROMOTE GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL INVOLVEMENT IN CHARITABLE PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES, SPONSOR SCHOLARSHIPS, AND MAINTAIN INTEREST AND PARTICIPATION IN EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES.

AND. WHEREAS, RETIRED EDUCATORS ARE ENCOURAGED TO REMAIN ACTIVE IN THE EDUCATIONAL PROFESSION THROUGH VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATED WITH LEARNING, I, JAY INSLEE, GOVERNOR'S STATE OF WASHINGTON, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM MARCH 20TH THROUGH 26TH 2023 AS SCHOOL RETIREES APPRECIATION WEEK AND THE SNOW KING RETIREES DO CONTRIBUTE MANY GRANTS TO OUR TEACHERS THAT OUR TEACHERS CAN APPLY FOR.

AND IT'S ALWAYS WONDERFUL TO SEE THE LIST OF THE AMAZING PROJECTS WHICH THEY SUPPORT.

I HAVE TO SAY, AS A SCHOOL RETIREE WHO HAS DECIDED TO DEVOTE ALL OF MY VOLUNTEER TIME TO THE LEARNING OF OUR STUDENTS, I APPRECIATE THE APPRECIATION WEEK FOR SCHOOL RETIREES AND EVERYBODY ELSE WHO'S GIVEN THEIR CAREER TO THE SCHOOLS ONCE THEY GET TO RETIRE.

WELL, IT HAS BEEN A BUSY TIME, AS MANY OF YOU KNOW, WITH BUDGET IMPACTS.

HAVING SERVED FROM 2016-2022, MOST OF THAT TIME WAS SPENT AT SCRIBER LAKE HIGH SCHOOL AND LATER WITH EDMONDS E-LEARNING ACADEMY.

OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS, I HAVE WATCHED SEVERAL BOARD MEETINGS AND IN DOING SO, I HAVE WITNESSED MANY STUDENT PRESENTATIONS AND CELEBRATIONS.

SO WITH THAT IN MIND, I AM HERE TONIGHT TO SPEAK ON BEHALF OF ONE OF MY FORMER STUDENTS, MR. RASHAAN FREELAND, AND I'M GOING TO SPELL HIS NAME JUST FOR YOU'LL REALIZE WHY LATER.

IT'S R-A-S-H-A-A-N, AND FREELAND IS F-R-E-E-L-A-N-D.

CERTAINLY A STUDENT WORTH CELEBRATING WHILE HE WAS ENROLLED WITH ESD, WHICH I AM QUITE CERTAIN PAST COLLEAGUES LIKE MR. [INAUDIBLE] VERGARA, MR. MICHAEL COOK AND A NUMBER OF OTHERS WOULD AGREE WITH IN REGARD TO WHAT A GREAT STUDENT RASHAAN WAS WHILE ATTENDING SCRIBER.

UNFORTUNATELY, HOWEVER, LIKE MANY OF MY FORMER STUDENTS, RASHAAN HAD A NUMBER OF CHALLENGES DURING THE PANDEMIC THAT MADE IT DIFFICULT TO ATTEND SCHOOL REGULARLY.

BUT HE NEVER STOPPED TRYING TO GET BACK WHEN THE SITUATION PERMITTED.

IN FACT, LAST MAY, RASHAAN HAD REACHED OUT TO ME AGAIN, HOPING FOR GUIDANCE TO RE ENROLL INTO THE GRADUATION ALLIANCE PROGRAM.

AND IN THIS INSTANCE, I DID WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO MS. ERIN BUESCHER. I HOPE I SAID THAT RIGHT.

FOR BEING AVAILABLE TO ASSIST IN THE PROCESS THIS PAST JULY.

UNFORTUNATELY, RASHAAN, HERE I GO, WASN'T ABLE TO FOLLOW THROUGH BECAUSE HE WAS DIAGNOSED SHORTLY AFTER IN AUGUST WITH A RARE FORM OF CANCER CALLED RHABDOMYOSARCOMA, WHICH BECAME THE MORE IMPORTANT PRIORITY.

WHEN RASHAAN CONTACTED ME TO SHARE HIS CANCER DIAGNOSIS, I IMMEDIATELY GOT MY HUSBAND, MR .

BOWERS, ON THE PHONE AS HE HAS A BACKGROUND IN HISTOCHEMISTRY PATHOLOGY WORLD, AND HE ALREADY KNEW RASHAAN FROM WHEN I WORKED AT SCRIBER.

YOU WERE A LITTLE YOUNGER THEN.

SINCE THAT PHONE CALL, MR. BOWERS HAS HAD THE PRIVILEGE IN HELPING RASHAAN AND HIS FAMILY TO NAVIGATE THROUGH A NUMBER OF DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENTS RADIATION TREATMENTS, CHEMOTHERAPY, WHICH I HAVE BEEN VERY GRATEFUL FOR CONSIDERING THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT MY AREA OF EXPERTISE.

ON THAT NOTE, RASHAAN RECENTLY FINISHED HIS FIRST SERIES OF RADIATION, WHICH IS WHY HE IS FINALLY ABLE TO BE HERE WITH ME THIS EVENING.

HE'S ALWAYS BEEN IN RADIATION, ALWAYS BUSY IN THE EVENINGS, SO I WANTED TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK ON HIS BEHALF, TO CELEBRATE HIM AND HOW MUCH HE MEANS TO ME.

I LEARNED HOW TO KNOW IF IT WOULD BE A GOOD DAY BEFORE KIDS ARRIVED OR IF A ROOM WAS LIKE THE INSIDE OF A KALEIDOSCOPE.

EVERY WALL COVERED IN JUNK BOOKS AND STUFF PILED UP TO THE CEILING.

WORST CASES, WINDOWS COVERED WITH SO MUCH STUFF YOU COULDN'T SEE OUT.

NO PLACE TO REST YOUR EYES.

IT WAS GOING TO BE ROUGH.

THE KIDS OUT OF CONTROL ALWAYS.

ANOTHER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, I ARRIVE AT NOON, A COUPLE HUNDRED KIDS IN THE COMMON AREA.

AT LUNCH, ALMOST EVERY KID LOOKED TO BE A RACIAL MINORITY, ALMOST EVERY TEACHER CIRCULATING WHITE, GOOD LUCK WITH THAT.

I'VE ATTENDED BOARD MEETINGS AND SEVERAL THINGS BOTH SIDES OF THIS ROOM CAN AGREE ON.

ARE EDUCATION, IMPROVING TEST SCORES AND THE SAFETY OF ALL STUDENTS.

I'M HERE TONIGHT TO SHARE OUR FAMILY'S EXPERIENCE REGARDING SAFETY ISSUES THAT HAVE HAPPENED AT EDMONDS-WOODWAY.

BUT I'M NOT HERE JUST FOR OUR SON, BUT FOR ALL STUDENTS.

IN ORDER TO PROVIDE A GOOD EDUCATION AND IMPROVE TEST SCORES, A SAFE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT MUST BE PROVIDED AND ESTABLISHED.

WE PULLED OUR SON FROM THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT IN 2020, BUT AFTER CAREFUL THOUGHT AND CONSIDERATION, HE'S BACK AS A SOPHOMORE AT EDMONDS-WOODWAY.

WE PLACED HIM THERE SO HE COULD DEVELOP A BETTER CONNECTION WITH HIS SOCCER TEAM SINCE HE'S A RETURNING PLAYER.

AND SECONDLY, HE'S A PASSIONATE DRUMMER AND WANTED TO BE A PART OF THE BAND WITH JAKE BERGEVIN IN OUR SON'S BRIEF TIME AT UW.

I'VE BEEN SHOCKED AND ANGRY WITH THE LACK OF SECURITY AND SAFETY THAT'S BEING PROVIDED FOR ALL STUDENTS.

ON OCTOBER 28TH, 2022, MYSELF AND ANOTHER E-W MOM MET WITH ALLISON LARSON REGARDING OUR SAFETY CONCERNS FOR THE SCHOOL.

I PERSONALLY ADDRESSED THE TIME WHEN OUR SON WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF A FIGHT THAT BROKE OUT IN THE GENDER NEUTRAL BATHROOM ON HIS WAY TO CLASS AND NOT A STAFF MEMBER WAS IN SIGHT.

THE FACT THAT OUR SON DOESN'T FEEL SAFE OR COMFORTABLE AND RARELY USES THE BATHROOM BECAUSE KIDS ARE DOING DRUGS OR HAVING SEX IN THEM, OR THE TIME WHEN I GAVE ANOTHER STUDENT A RIDE HOME WHO TALKED TO ME ABOUT THEIR FEARS, KNOWING THEIR FRIEND WAS IN THE CLASSROOM WHEN THE EDMONDS POLICE ARRIVED TO ARREST THE STUDENT WHO HAD THE GUN FOR THREE DAYS AND THE OUTCOME THAT COULD HAVE AND WHAT THE OUTCOME COULD HAVE LOOKED LIKE.

IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE, POLICE SHOULD HAVE BEEN CALLED IMMEDIATELY AND NOT ON DAY THREE.

AFTER ADDRESSING MY CONCERNS, ALLISON SAID HER SCHOOL DIDN'T HAVE A SAFETY PROBLEM.

I THEN ASKED HER IF SHE'D SEEN THE GANG GRAFFITI ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE SCHOOL TO THE NORTH AND SOUTH SIDES.

SHE THEN DEFLECTED AND TALKED ABOUT OTHER SCHOOLS AND VARIOUS DISTRICTS WHO HAVE PROBLEMS BUT NOT HERS.

AND A FEW WEEKS AGO I WAS SHOPPING AT A LOCAL RETAIL STORE WHEN THE GRANDPARENT OF AN E-W STUDENT SHOWED ME A VIDEO OF A FIGHT THAT BROKE OUT IN THE GREAT HALL DURING LUNCH BETWEEN TWO GIRLS. ONCE AGAIN, NOT A STAFF IN SIGHT, I REALIZED DEB KILGORE VOTED TO DO AWAY WITH SROS, AND THE DISTRICT DOESN'T WANT TO CALL THE POLICE UNTIL THEY HAVE A CRISIS ON THEIR HANDS. BUT WHAT'S IT GOING TO TAKE? TEACHERS ARE THERE TO TEACH AND ADMIN NEEDS TO BE DOING ADMIN WORK.

TEACHERS AND ADMIN ARE NOT TRAINED TO ADEQUATELY HANDLE THE SITUATIONS THAT ARE HAPPENING IN OUR SCHOOLS AND CERTAINLY NOT THE ONES WE'VE EXPERIENCED AT EDMONDS-WOODWAY.

OUR CHILDREN SHOULD FEEL SAFE, DESERVE BETTER.

AND AS A TAXPAYER AND MOM, I'M APPALLED AT WHAT I'M SEEING WITHIN OUR DISTRICT.

THERE'S NO REASON WHY I SHOULD HAVE TO PULL OUR SON AND SEND HIM BACK TO PUBLIC SCHOOL.

I'M HERE TO ASK, WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS? DO YOU REALLY CARE? AND ARE YOU TRULY FOR THE STUDENTS? BECAUSE AS I SEE IT, THE BOARD AND DISTRICT ARE FAILING OUR STUDENTS.

SHE ALSO SHARES THIS POSITION AS A 0.1 HEALTH.

A FEW WEEKS AGO, WE DID RECEIVE AN EMAIL SAYING THAT THERE ARE SIX OPEN POSITIONS.

A 1.0 POSITION FOR THE READING INTERVENTIONIST FOR FOURTH THROUGH SIXTH GRADE, WHICH WE DO NEED IT IN OUR SCHOOLS.

AND I KNOW THAT WAS DONE THROUGH OUR BARGAINING UNIT.

BUT AGAIN, I'VE BEEN TOLD THERE'S NO MONEY TO SUPPORT PE TEACHERS.

NOW THIS SUPPORT IS FOR K-12 PE TEACHERS AND ALSO HEALTH TEACHERS, WHICH INCLUDE THE ELEMENTARY CLASSROOM TEACHERS.

A FEW OF THE BULLETS THAT I'M CONCERNED ABOUT IN THIS POLICY THAT WE SAID IS I BELIEVE IT WAS THE FIRST ONE SAYING THAT ALL STUDENTS SHOULD RECEIVE AN AVERAGE OF 100 INSTRUCTIONAL MINUTES PER WEEK OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION.

THAT'S GRADES ONE THROUGH EIGHT.

IN ELEMENTARY, THEY ONLY GET 60 MINUTES TWICE A WEEK.

IF IF WE'RE LUCKY BECAUSE OF ALL OF OUR FRIDAYS.

ANOTHER ONE IS THAT ALL SCHOOLS WILL HAVE CERTIFICATED PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHERS.

I KNOW THAT THERE'S A LOT OF SCHOOLS THAT HAVE AN OUT-OF-AREA ASSIGNMENT FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION BECAUSE THEY THINK ANYBODY CAN TEACH IT.

ANOTHER ONE IS ALL SCHOOLS WILL HAVE APPROPRIATE CLASS SIZES, FACILITIES, EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES NEEDED TO DELIVER QUALITY HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION CONSISTENT WITH STATE STANDARDS.

WE TEACH TO OUR STANDARDS AND WE'RE WORKING HARD ON MAKING SURE THAT WE HAVE THAT.

BUT IT'S REALLY DIFFICULT WITH THE 0.1 SUPPORT PERSON FROM THE DISTRICT.

AND WE ALSO WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH EQUIPMENT.

I HAVE MANY STUDENTS AT MY SCHOOL WHERE A 1.3 AND THAT MEANS THAT I HAVE TO HAVE ENOUGH EQUIPMENT.

I HAVE NO MONEY BUDGET FOR MY STUDENTS FROM THE DISTRICT, WHEREAS MUSIC, THEY HAVE GENERAL EQUIPMENT BECAUSE OF THEIR CURRICULUM.

AND I KNOW THAT LIBRARY IS RECEIVING, I BELIEVE IT'S $10 PER STUDENT TO SUPPORT THEM.

NOW, I WANT TO BRING THIS TO YOUR ATTENTION BECAUSE YOU GUYS DID TALK ABOUT THIS POLICY JUST A FEW WEEKS AGO IN MAY.

I MEAN, BASICALLY JANUARY AND DECEMBER ARE ALMOST IDENTICAL.

WE PICK UP A FEW THOUSAND DOLLARS.

PEOPLE WHO ARE IN ARREARS, BUT WE DON'T SEE A BIG CHANGE IN PROPERTY TAX COLLECTIONS UNTIL APRIL.

SO WE ARE STILL ON COURSE.

AND I LIKE POINTING OUT THAT FOR STATE REVENUES, THE SYSTEM LOOKS AT THE TREND DATA AND SAYS YOU SHOULD COLLECT 38.76% OF YOUR BUDGET AND YOU'RE AT 38.95.

SO BASICALLY ALMOST SPOT ON.

AGAIN, LOOK AT TOTAL EXPENDITURES.

THE SYSTEM, BASED ON OUR BUDGET IS PROJECTING 39.25%.

THIS ONE WAS SPONSORED BY SENATOR WELLMAN AND BRAUN AND PASSED OFF THE HOUSE FLOOR UNANIMOUSLY AND HAD A PUBLIC HEARING IN THE HOUSE EDUCATION COMMITTEE TODAY AT 4:00 PM.

I WAS UNABLE TO ATTEND OR VIEW THE HEARING, SO IF ANYONE HAS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THAT, I WOULD BE HAPPY TO LEND THE FLOOR OVER TO LYDIA OR DOCTOR MINOR IF YOU HAPPEN TO HAVE ANY UPDATES ON HOW THAT WENT TODAY.

WE'VE GOT A VERY INTERESTING TOOL THAT WAS DEVELOPED BY ONE OF THE BOARD DIRECTORS AT IN EVERGREEN THAT SHOWS SHORTFALLS IN BUDGET BY DISTRICT.

YOU CAN CHOOSE YOUR DISTRICT OR YOUR REGION OR THE ENTIRE STATE, AND YOU CAN SEE WHERE WE FALL SHORT WITH SPECIAL ED FUNDING. AND IT IS A VERY INTERESTING TOOL.

AND YOU CAN COMPARE YOUR DISTRICT TO THE ONE NEXT DOOR.

AND, YOU KNOW, WHILE RECOGNIZING THAT'S PROGRESS, WE REALLY DO WANT THIS CAP REMOVED ENTIRELY BECAUSE IT'S ARBITRARY AND IT REALLY DOES PREVENT THE DISTRICT FROM SERVING ALL STUDENTS. SO I DO KNOW THAT THERE WILL BE ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITY FOR US AS A DISTRICT TO WEIGH IN.

THE LARGE SCHOOL CAUCUS MET THIS MORNING AT 930 TO DISCUSS LETTER WRITING AND ANYTHING THEY CAN DO TO INFLUENCE THIS LEGISLATION.

AS ANY WE GET AN UPDATE FROM THAT, I'LL SHARE.

BUT AS FAR AS THE FEEDBACK AND THE TESTIMONY THAT I'M HEARING, THAT IT'S NOT GOING TO GO NEARLY AS FAR AS WE NEED IT TO GO.

AND I DO LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING THAT TOOL.

I HEARD THAT IT WAS PRETTY COOL FOR US TO SEE THE DISPARITY, WHICH IS, YEAH, IT IS PRETTY.

I ALSO GOT THE IMPRESSION FROM THE DISCUSSION THAT ALTHOUGH IT IS A VERY POWERFUL KIND OF DISPLAY OF DATA.

DATA IS NOT ENOUGH.

AND I'VE SPOKEN WITH DR.

MINER AND, YOU KNOW, WE WE NEED TO GET SOME OF OUR LEGISLATORS INTO THE DISTRICTS TO SEE WHAT SPECIAL EDUCATION REALLY LOOKS LIKE.

THERE'S A SENSE THAT THEY DON'T REALLY KNOW WHAT THEY'RE WHAT THEY'RE DELIBERATING ON.

YEAH, THIS IS SO WE'LL JUST HAVE TO KEEP KEEP WATCHING THIS BILL AND TRYING TO INFLUENCE IT AS WE AS WE CAN.

UM, I DO THINK THAT THE MORE WE CAN EDUCATE OUR LAWMAKERS ACROSS THE STATE TO THE IMPACTS, THE CLOSER WE WILL GET TO EQUITABLE FUNDING.

BUT I DON'T THINK IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN THIS YEAR.

BUT STRANGER THINGS HAVE HAPPENED.

UM, SO THERE'S ALSO A TRANSPORTATION FUNDING BILL THAT WE WERE TRACKING, ATTEMPTING TO REWORK THE STUDENT TRANSPORTATION ALLOCATION REPORTING SYSTEM, WHICH IS CALLED STARS, AND IT HAS ACTUALLY BEEN SCALED BACK TO CREATE A SPECIAL PASSENGER SAFETY NET PROGRAM.

AND HOUSE APPROPRIATIONS IS GOING TO BE HEARING THIS BILL WEDNESDAY, TOMORROW AT 4:00.

AND THERE WAS A CALL FROM TO IF OUR DISTRICT WOULD LIKE TO WEIGH IN ON ANY OF THIS, WE COULD SIGN IN AND TESTIFY.

I HAVE NOT CHECKED WITH TRANSPORTATION ON IF THIS IS SOMETHING WE MAY WANT TO WEIGH IN ON.

HOWEVER, WE CAN ALWAYS JUST SIGN IN AND INDIVIDUALLY AND TESTIFY PRO OR CON ON THE WEBSITE.

THE OTHER BILLS THAT I DO KNOW THAT ARE BEING SEEN NEXT WEEK IS THE GRADUATION PATHWAY EXTENSION AND THE ONLINE HIGH SCHOOL AND BEYOND PLANNING.

AND SO THOSE WILL BE IMPORTANT BILLS THAT WE MAY WANT TO TAKE A POSITION ON AND CAN GET FURTHER INFORMATION ON THAT IF YOU'D LIKE.

BUT THERE'S ALSO WASEDA DID HIGHLIGHT TWO SCHOOL DIRECTORS THAT HAVE TURNED LAWMAKERS THAT I WILL BE FORWARDING ALONG THE INFORMATION ON THAT.

IT WAS SENATOR SENATOR NOBLES FROM THE 28TH WHO SPONSORED SEVERAL EDUCATION BILLS.

AND SO AS WE SEE MORE SCHOOL DIRECTORS BECOME LAWMAKERS, WE DO GET ADDITIONAL ATTENTION TO THE EDUCATION FUNDING AND RECESS ISSUES AND SCREENING.

THE OTHER IS THE PERSON THAT THEY HIGHLIGHTED THAT WAS A SCHOOL DIRECTOR TURNED LEGISLATOR, WAS REPRESENTATIVE BERG FROM THE 44TH, AND SHE FORMERLY SERVED ON THE EDMONDS SCHOOL BOARD, THEN THE EVERETT AND IS NOW A LEGISLATOR AND DOING WONDERFUL VIDEOS SUCH AS THE BERG BILL BASICS, WHICH SHOWS HOW BILLS BECOME A LAW.

AND I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND PEOPLE TAKE A LOOK AT HER VIDEO TO HAVE A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING ON HOW THIS ENTIRE PROCESS WORKS, PARTICULARLY SINCE SHE USED TO BE ON OUR SCHOOL BOARD. AND THAT IS ALL I HAVE FOR RIGHT NOW.

UM, AND ALSO, UM, I FORGOT THE PERSON'S NAME, BUT SHE BROUGHT UP, LIKE THE SAFETY CONCERNS OF THE STUDENTS AND MOUNTLAKE TERRACE. UM, THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF THINGS WITH BULLYING AND, UM, JUST THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING WITH, LIKE THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY AND JUST WITH PEOPLE IN GENERAL, HOW PEOPLE CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OTHER PEOPLE'S INSECURITIES.

AND I HAVE WITNESSED TO THAT.

AND IT'S, IT'S REALLY HEARTBREAKING HOW PEOPLE FIND JOY IN THAT.

AND WE CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH WITHOUT ANY ADULTS.

NOT TWO KIDS ARE GETTING THEIR PARENTS CALLED.

WE'VE GOT KIDS WHO MAYBE LOOK A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN THEIR PEERS AND THEY GET PULLED OUT AND, OH, YOU DON'T HAVE CITIZENSHIP HERE.

YOU GO OFF TO AN ICE DETENTION FACILITY.

YOU KNOW, ANY NUMBER OF THINGS.

WE CAN PULL THOSE STORIES.

SIX YEAR OLDS GETTING ARRESTED, TAKEN TO JUVENILE HALL, YOU KNOW, JUST THERE, THE POLICE, THEY ENFORCE THE LAW AND THEY ONLY REALLY KNOW ONE WAY TO DO THAT.

AND THAT'S GREAT WHEN IT'S ADULTS AND IT'S DANGEROUS.

BUT WHEN IT'S KIDS, WE REALLY PROBABLY SHOULD FIND ANOTHER WAY TO DO THAT.

SO I'M NOT DOWNPLAYING THE ISSUE OF SCHOOL SAFETY, BUT I ALSO DON'T THINK PEOPLE WITH GUNS AND, YOU KNOW, FIVE YEARS OF TRAINING IN HOW TO DO TAKEDOWNS ARE NECESSARILY THE RIGHT PEOPLE TO POLICE OUR KIDS.

SO I JUST WANT TO LET YOU ALL KNOW THAT WHILE WE CONTINUE OUR DISCUSSIONS ON THAT, IT'S PROBABLY GOING TO BE SOMETHING IN BETWEEN WHAT BOTH SIDES THINK SHOULD HAPPEN HERE.

AND SO WE'RE REALLY FORTUNATE THAT WE HAVE SUCH A HIGH QUALITY STAFF FOR OUR KIDS.

SO WE ARE VERY, VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE SUCH HARD WORKING AND EXCELLENT TEACHERS IN OUR DISTRICT.

THE ONLY OTHER THING I WANT TO MENTION IS I HAD A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE THIS PAST SATURDAY.

I DID A READ ALOUD OF A BOOK AT THE PROJECT PROJECT GIRLS MENTORING PROGRAM AS PART OF THE UPCOMING WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION.

AND THIS IS A PROJECT THAT WORKS WITH GIRLS, MOSTLY MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS, BUT GIVES THEM A PLACE AFTER SCHOOL TO BE, TO BE MENTORED, TO BE ABLE TO DO, GET TUTORED, TO WORK ON HOMEWORK, TO NETWORK WITH OTHER GIRLS, HAVE FOOD AVAILABLE TO THEM. IT'S IT'S A WONDERFUL PROGRAM AND I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH IT AND WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR COMMUNITY IS AWARE OF IT BECAUSE IT WAS CLEARLY SOMETHING THAT'S VERY SUPPORTIVE OF OUR YOUNG WOMEN IN OUR SCHOOLS THAT CAN REALLY BENEFIT FROM THAT EXTRA COMMUNITY OF WOMEN, YOUNG WOMEN.

ON THE HEELS OF THAT, ON SATURDAY NIGHT WAS THE NATIVE EDUCATION FAMILY NIGHT, AND THAT WAS HELD AT THE LYNNWOOD SENIOR CENTER.

AND CARIN HAD TOLD ME SHE HOPED THAT THERE WOULD BE TEN PEOPLE THERE.

SHE FAR EXCEEDED THAT.

I WOULD I DIDN'T COUNT, BUT I WOULD SAY IT WAS PROBABLY CLOSER TO 45.

AND THEY WERE ABLE TO.

EVERYONE WHO ATTENDED WAS ABLE TO MAKE A TRADITIONAL MEDICINE BAG.

AND THEN THEY HAD A PEOPLE FROM THE TRIBES TALKING ABOUT THE VARIOUS NATURAL MEDICINES.

AND SO EVERYONE WAS ABLE TO PUT SOME THINGS INTO THEIR BAG AND AND TAKE IT WITH THEM.

SO IT WAS REALLY A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE AND REALLY INDICATED HOW HARD SHE'S WORKING TO REALLY REACH OUT TO FAMILIES SUPPORTING NATIVE AMERICAN CHILDREN IN OUR DISTRICT AND TO MAKE THOSE CONNECTIONS.
