[LAUGHTER] NEXT TO OUR PUBLIC COMMENTS.

[8. PUBLIC COMMENTS-6:50 pm]

>> THIS EVENING, WE HAVE SEVEN PEOPLE SIGNED UP FOR PUBLIC COMMENTS AND WE DID NOT RECEIVE ANY WRITTEN COMMENTS TODAY.

>> THANK YOU. THE PUBLIC COMMENTS SECTION OF THE AGENDA IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CITIZENS TO ADDRESS THE SCHOOL BOARD.

SINCE THIS IS A BUSINESS MEETING OF THE SCHOOL BOARD, THE PURPOSE OF PUBLIC COMMENTS IS FOR OUR STAKEHOLDERS TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE BOARD DIRECTORS ABOUT ITEMS ON THE AGENDA OR OTHER SPECIFIC WORK WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.

THIS IS NOT A TIME FOR THE AUDIENCE TO ADDRESS EACH OTHER.

WITH THAT IN MIND, WE ARE RETURNING TO THE CONFIGURATION USED FOR YEARS PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC WITH PUBLIC COMMENTS BEING DELIVERED DIRECTLY TO THE BOARD AT THE TABLE FACING THE BOARD.

ITEMS BROUGHT FORWARD DURING THIS PORTION OF THE MEETING ARE NOT TYPICALLY ACTED UPON BY THE BOARD AT THIS TIME BUT MAY BE FOLLOWED UP BY THE BOARD, THE SUPERINTENDENT, AND OUR STAFF AT A LATER TIME.

PEOPLE MAY SUBMIT PUBLIC COMMENTS FOR A BOARD MEETING IN THREE DIFFERENT WAYS.

YOU MAY CHOOSE TO READ YOUR COMMENT ALLOWED IN PERSON, AND THAT'S HOW EVERYBODY IS DOING IT THIS EVENING.

AT OTHER TIMES, PEOPLE WHO WANT TO COMMENT VIRTUALLY MAY DO SO OR THEY CAN CHOOSE TO SUBMIT THEIR COMMENTS IN WRITING.

THE BOARD READS ALL WRITTEN COMMENTS WHICH ARE LATER ATTACHED TO THE MEETING AGENDA AND AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC ON THE BOARD DOCS WEBSITE.

THE BOARD ALSO ACCEPTS WRITTEN COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS AT ANY TIME THROUGH E-MAIL.

WE READ EACH COMMENT AND E-MAIL THAT WE RECEIVE AND WE APPRECIATE THE TIME AND EFFORT THAT IT TAKES FOR THOSE WHO WROTE THEM.

WHILE WE ENCOURAGE AND APPRECIATE PUBLIC COMMENTS, PLEASE LIMIT YOUR COMMENTS THAT ARE READ ALOUD TO THREE MINUTES.

IF A COMMENT BECOMES TOO LENGTHY, I MAY NEED TO INTERRUPT IN ORDER TO ALLOW EACH PERSON EQUAL TIME.

WE ALSO ASK THOSE WHO ARE MAKING A PUBLIC COMMENT DURING A BOARD MEETING TO PLEASE MAKE THEIR STATEMENTS IN A CIVIL MANNER WITHOUT DISPARAGING, NAME-CALLING, OR OTHERWISE, TARGETING ANY ONE PERSON OR GROUP IN THE DISTRICT.

SIMILARLY, WE ASK EVERYONE IN THE AUDIENCE TO PLEASE SHOW RESPECT BY LISTENING QUIETLY, WITHOUT TALKING OR WHISPERING TO EACH OTHER, SO THAT EVERYONE CAN HEAR EACH COMMENT.

TONIGHT, OUR FIRST COMMENT WILL BE MADE BY CHRISTY ROBERTSON. [NOISE]

>> GOOD EVENING. AFTER THE TERRIBLE DEATH OF GEORGE FLOYD, I IMMEDIATELY WENT TO MY DAUGHTER-IN-LAW TO EXPRESS MY HORRIFIED GRIEF.

MY DAUGHTER-IN-LAW IS BLACK.

HER WELL-BEING IN LIGHT OF THIS TRAGEDY IS IMPORTANT TO ME.

SHE IS THE MOTHER OF MY BIRACIAL GRANDSON AND I CARE ABOUT HIS FUTURE.

SOON AFTER I STARTED HEARING ABOUT THE BLACK LIVES MATTER ORGANIZATION AND MY FIRST RESPONSE WAS TOTALLY POSITIVE BECAUSE BLACK LIVES DO MATTER AND NEED PROTECTION.

SOMETIME LATER, I STARTED HEARING CONCERNS ABOUT THE BLACK LIVES MATTER ORGANIZATION.

I RESEARCHED AND FOUND A YOUTUBE VIDEO OF BLACK LIVES MATTER FOUNDER PATRISSE CULLORS.

I WATCHED HER CLEARLY STATE IN HER OWN WORDS THAT

[00:10:03]

SHE AND HER CO-FOUNDER ALICIA GARZA ARE, AND I QUOTE, "TRAINED MARXISTS." I WENT TO THE BLACK LIVES MATTER WEBSITE, READ THEIR LIST OF GUIDING PRINCIPLES AND WAS ALARMED TO READ THEIR INTENT TO "DISRUPT THE WESTERN PRESCRIBED NUCLEAR FAMILY STRUCTURE." THIS STATEMENT WENT ON TO REFER TO "MOTHERS, PARENTS AND CHILDREN GLARINGLY LEAVING OUT AND HE MENTIONED THAT FATHERS." NOW ALL BELLS AND WHISTLES ARE GOING OFF IN MY MIND, BECAUSE THE CHALLENGES OF FATHERLESS HOMES ARE WELL-DOCUMENTED.

BLACK LIVES MATTER HAS NOT REMOVED THAT STATEMENT FROM IT'S PUBLISHED PLATFORM.

THE PHRASE, BLACK LIVES MATTER AS A STATEMENT WITH WHICH WE ALL AGREE.

BUT IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT OUR CHILDREN NOT BE INDOCTRINATED WITH MARXIST IDEOLOGY BECAUSE IT HAS DOCUMENTED THAT MARXISM LED TO LENIN'S COMMUNISM.

WHO WERE THE MOST FAMOUS MARXIST COMMUNISTS? LENIN, STALIN, [INAUDIBLE] THESE VIOLATORS USE THE TACTICS OF PITTING GROUPS OF PEOPLE AGAINST EACH OTHER.

A STRATEGY NOW USED BY BLM.

IT IS DANGEROUS TO SUPPORT ANY ORGANIZATION BUILT ON MARXIST PRINCIPLES.

PREVIOUSLY, WHEN I WAS TEACHING, SCHOOLS DESIGNATED FEBRUARY AS BLACK HISTORY MONTH, LEARNING FOCUSED ON THE TRAGIC HISTORY OF SLAVERY, JIM CROW AND SEGREGATION.

IT ALSO HIGHLIGHTED HOW BLACKS PERSEVERED, CONFRONTED THESE WRONGS AND POSITIVELY CONTRIBUTE TO SOCIETY.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO CONTINUE THESE STUDIES.

BUT I URGE THE BOARD TO DISENGAGE FROM ANY CURRICULUM DEVELOPED BY THE MARXIST BLACK LIVES MATTER ORGANIZATION.

I IMPLORE THE SCHOOL BOARD TO NEXT YEAR, RENAME FEBRUARY AS BLACK HISTORY AND ACCOMPLISHMENT MONTH AND FIND A NEW CURRICULUM TO TEACH THESE ESSENTIAL CONCEPTS.

THANK YOU [APPLAUSE]

>> NEXT IS TONY SHAPIRO.

>> GOOD EVENING. I'M DISCUSSING UPCOMING LIABILITY THIS BOARD AND STAFF AND FACULTY MAY BE FACING.

I'D LIKE TO POST SOME QUESTIONS REGARDING POTENTIAL FUTURE LIABILITIES THAT YOU AS INDIVIDUALS AND THE SCHOOL DISTRICT ITSELF MAY VERY WELL FACE IN THE COMING YEARS.

WHAT DOES THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS FOR SOMEONE UNDERGOING A SUPPOSE A GENDER TRANSITION WHO IN FUTURE YEARS FIND THEY MADE A GRAVE MISTAKE? WHAT RECOURSE WHERE THEY HAVE AGAINST THOSE WHO ENCOURAGED, STOOD SILENTLY BY AND EVEN HELP FACILITATE THEIR SUPPOSED TO TRANSITION.

DOES THIS BOARD ASSUME THAT DISTRICT INSURANCE WILL COVER THIS? IF SO, WHAT INSURANCE WRITERS HAS THE DISTRICT PUT IN PLACE? WHAT ARE THE COST OF THESE WRITERS AND HOW ARE THEY BEING CATEGORIZED? DOES THIS COVERAGE CEASE WHEN THE RIDERS HAVE DROPPED FROM THE POLICY? WOULD YOU DISCLOSE THESE COSTS TO THE PUBLIC? IN THE FORTHCOMING YEARS, PERHAPS LONG AFTER YOU HAVE LEFT THIS BOARD, ARE YOU PERSONALLY PREPARING TO INCUR DEFENSE ATTORNEY FEES AND EVEN JUDGMENTS FOR THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR.

THIS IS A RISK THAT INDIVIDUAL BOARD MEMBERS, AS WELL AS TEACHERS AND STAFF MIGHT BE WISE TO CONSIDER.

SINCE YOU ARE EMBRACING AND PUTTING FORTH THE LEGITIMACY OF THESE TRANSITIONS TO THE STUDENTS OF THIS DISTRICT.

ARE YOU DISCLOSING TO THESE CHILDREN, NOT TO MENTION THEIR PARENTS, THAT THEY WILL MOST LIKELY BE UNABLE TO HAVE CHILDREN THEMSELVES? PERHAPS THERE IS A SENSE OF ASSURANCE THAT THIS EXPOSURE IS NIL.

SINCE OUR BRILLIANT LEGISLATURE HAS PROBABLY BEEN ENACTED STATUTES DISCARDING ALL LIABILITY FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION PROFESSIONALS.

YET FEDERAL STATUTES SUCH AS INDIVIDUAL DISABILITY EDUCATION ACT AND EVEN THE US CONSTITUTION MAY VERY WELL OVERRIDE WHATEVER LEGISLATION THIS STATE MAY CHOOSE TO ENACT.

THOSE OF US ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN AND SEE THE MENTALITY OF THIS BOARD IS HAVING A ONE TRACK MIND FIXED ON CHAIN AND I'M CLAIMING COMPASSION AS THE ONLY REASON ONE COULD HAVE TOWARD ANY STUDENT DECIDED TO MAKE THIS A PERMANENT CHANGE TO THEIR BODY AND MIND.

THIS INSISTENCE OF SHOWING COMPASSION ABOVE AND BEYOND ALL CONSIDERATIONS ABOUT DISREGARDING THE NUMEROUS DESTRUCTIVE SIDE EFFECTS OF THESE PERMANENT STEPS WILL HAVE ON THEMSELVES.

EVEN OTHER STUDENTS WHO HAPPEN TO BE LOOKING ON IS VERY MISGUIDED AND NAIVE.

WHILE WE UNDERSTAND AND HAVE A DESIRE NOT TO DEGRADE STUDENTS.

HAVING THESE FEELINGS, WE FIND IT ASTONISHING THERE'S NO EFFORT TO PERSUADE THE STUDENTS NOT TO TAKE THESE STEPS.

IN FACT HAVE THEM CONSIDER THE LONG-TERM RAMIFICATIONS OF THIS DECISION.

OUR TODAY'S POLITICAL WINDS MIGHT SEEM TOTALLY COMMITTED TO THIS CONCEPT OF TRANSITION.

[00:15:05]

YOU MIGHT VERY WELL IN NOT SO DISTANT FUTURE, FINE FRUIT OF YOUR EFFORTS WILL BE NOT CONSIDERED IN SUCH A FAVORABLE LIGHT.

THANK YOU [APPLAUSE]

>> NEXT IS ROBERT FRETTS.

>> THANK YOU. REPARATIONS FOR SLAVERY.

MANY SAY IT SHOULD BE DONE.

FEW SAY HOW TO DO IT.

WE DID IT BEFORE JAPANESE-AMERICAN INTERMENT, WORLD WAR II.

1976 REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT FORD APOLOGIZED, 1988, CONGRESS GAVE $20,000 TO EACH INTERN IS STILL LIVING, INCLUDING STAR TREK'S GEORGIA TECH HIGH AND PAT MERIDA, THE KARATE KID.

1.6 BILLION DOLLARS TO 81,000 PEOPLE, TEN DETENTION SITES PRESERVED AS LANDMARKS.

THOUGH JUST 4% OF THOSE WHO CROSSED THE ATLANTIC AND CHAINS CAME TO THE USA.

ONLY SEVEN AFRICAN COUNTRIES HAVE MORE BLACK PEOPLE THAN US.

AFRICAN-AMERICANS ARE THE WORLD'S WEALTHIEST BLACK COMMUNITY AND MOST ACCOMPLISHED AS SEEN THIS WEEKEND.

IN THE CIVIL WAR, 2.6 MILLION PEOPLE FOUGHT IN HORRIBLE CONDITIONS TO FREE THE SLAVES.

620,000 PEOPLE 2% OF OUR POPULATION DIED IN OUR BLOODIEST WAR, TWICE AS MANY FROM DISEASES WOUNDS.

HALF WERE NEVER IDENTIFIED FOR YEARS, FAMILIES DIDN'T KNOW IF THEIR RELATIVES WERE DEAD.

ONE OF EVERY 13 SURVIVORS LOST ONE OR MORE LIMBS, BRINGING SADNESS HOME FOR DECADES.

1865, THE SOUTH WAS RUBBLE.

WHOLE CITIES AND TOWNS BURNED TO THE GROUND.

FARMLAND LAID WASTE, PLOWED UP AND SALTED, KEEP ANYTHING FROM GROWING.

EVERY RAILROAD UPROOTED.

EVERY BRIDGE TORN DOWN.

FAR AS CHOPPED DOWN TO USE FOR FIREWOOD AND BUILD FORTS.

STINKING CARCASSES OF DEAD MEN MULES HORSES EVERYWHERE.

RAPE ON A VAST SCALE, RANSACKING AND LOOTING OF BUSINESSES HOMES.

SOUTHERNERS TO FIND FOOD, NORTHERNERS OUT OF RAGE, 45,000 AMPUTEES BROUGHT SADNESS HOME LASTING DECADES.

YEARS OF SOUTHERN HUNGER AND MISERY TILL THINGS BEGAN TO LOOK NORMAL.

ALL THE DESTRUCTION WAS IN THE SLAVE HOLDING DEMOCRATIC SOUTH.

ONLY ONE NORTHERN TOWN DESTROYED CHAMBERS, BERG, PENNSYLVANIA AND YOUR GETTYSBURG.

THE LAST VETERAN'S PAYMENT WAS TWO YEARS AGO.

A KID WENT OFF TO WAR, CAME HOME MARRIED, LIVED A LONG LIFE.

HIS WIFE DIED. HE MARRIED A YOUNG GIRL WHO SAID SHE'D CARE FOR HIM.

IRENE TRIPLET DIED TWO YEARS AGO.

THE VA WROTE CHECKS FOR THE CIVIL WAR FOR 155 YEARS.

A HUNDRED AND NINETY TWO COUNTRIES HAD SLAVERY ONLY THE US 80 AND BRITAIN FOUGHT WARS TO END IT.

IF YOU DON'T LIKE AMERICA BECAUSE IT LIKE EVERY OTHER COUNTRY ON EARTH, BUT AUSTRALIA HAD SLAVERY.

YOU MUST ALSO DISLIKED THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, THE PARTY OF SLAVERY, THE CONFEDERACY, KKK AND SEGREGATION.

THE REPUBLICANS OPPOSE SLAVERY FROM THE DAY THE PARTY WAS FOUNDED.

WAS THIS BLOODSHED, MISERY AND DESTRUCTION ENOUGH TO ATONE FOR THE CRUELTY OF SLAVERY.

LINCOLN SAID, EVERY DROP OF BLOOD DRAWN WITH THE LASH SHALL BE PAID BY ANOTHER DRAWN BY THE SWORD.

WHO DISAGREES WITH HIM AND BELIEVES THE MASSIVE DEATH AND DESTRUCTION WASN'T ENOUGH.

THE GREATEST AMERICAN EVER LINCOLN WAS MURDERED FOR FREEING SLAVES, AGE 56.

AS ALWAYS, SCHOOLS NEED TO TEACH BOTH SIDES OF THE ISSUE OF THE REPARATIONS ISSUE.

ONE SIDE IS INDOCTRINATION, TWO SIDES EDUCATION. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU [APPLAUSE] NEXT STEP IS SERIES SHAPIRO.

>> GOOD EVENING. I WAS PROUD OF MY COUNTRY WHEN BLACK HISTORY MONTH BECAME OFFICIALLY OBSERVED IN FEBRUARY, 1976 AS PART OF THE BICENTENNIAL, WHICH WAS DURING MY SENIOR YEAR OF HIGH-SCHOOL.

FEBRUARY WAS SELECTED DUE TO LINCOLN'S BIRTHDAY ON THE 12TH AND FREDERICK DOUGLASS WHO NOT KNOWING THE DATE OF HIS BIRTH HAD CHOSEN FEBRUARY 14TH.

BLACK HISTORY SHOULD BE COVERED ACROSS THE SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR.

I HAD ASKED THE BOARD TO READ OR LISTEN TO DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING'S LETTER FROM BIRMINGHAM JAIL.

I DON'T EQUATE OUR PRESENT CIRCUMSTANCES WITH THAT OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT YET I FIND ENCOURAGEMENT IN HIS ELOQUENT WORDS.

HE WRITES ABOUT EXTREMISM, "BUT THOUGH I WAS INITIALLY DISAPPOINTED AT BEING CATEGORIZED AS AN EXTREMIST, AS I CONTINUE TO THINK ABOUT THE MATTER, I GRADUALLY GAINED A MEASURE OF SATISFACTION FROM THE LABEL.

WAS NOT JESUS AND EXTREMIST FOR LOVE.

[00:20:01]

LOVE YOUR ENEMIES, BLESS THEM THAT CURSE YOU, DO GOOD TO THEM THAT HATE YOU, AND PRAY FOR THEM WHICH DESPITEFULLY USE YOU, AND PERSECUTE YOU.

WAS NOT AMOS AND EXTREMIST FOR JUSTICE: LET JUSTICE ROLL DOWN LIKE WATERS AND RIGHTEOUSNESS LIKE AN EVER FLOWING STREAM.

WAS NOT PAUL AND EXTREMIST FOR THE CHRISTIAN GOSPEL : "I BEAR IN MY BODY THE MARKS OF THE LORD JESUS." WAS NOT MARTIN LUTHER AND EXTREMIST: "HERE I STAND, I CANNOT DO OTHERWISE, SO HELP ME GOD." AND JOHN BUNYAN, "I WILL STAY IN JAIL TO THE END OF MY DAYS BEFORE I MAKE A BUTCHERY OF MY CONSCIENCE." AND ABRAHAM LINCOLN, "THIS NATION CANNOT SURVIVE HALF SLAVE AND HALF FREE." AND THOMAS JEFFERSON, "WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT THAT ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL." SO THE QUESTION IS NOT WHETHER WE WILL BE EXTREMISTS, BUT WHAT KIND OF EXTREMISTS WILL WE BE.

WILL WE BE EXTREMISTS FOR HATE OR FOR LOVE? WILL WE BE EXTREMISTS FOR THE PRESERVATION OF INJUSTICE OR FOR THE EXTENSION OF JUSTICE? IN THAT DRAMATIC SCENE ON CALVARY'S HILL, THREE MEN WERE CRUCIFIED.

WE MUST NEVER FORGET THAT ALL THREE WERE CRUCIFIED FOR THE SAME CRIME; THE CRIME OF EXTREMISM.

TWO WHERE EXTREMISTS FOR IMMORALITY AND THUS FELL BELOW THEIR ENVIRONMENT, THE OTHER, JESUS CHRIST, WAS AN EXTREMIST FOR LOVE, TRUTH, AND GOODNESS, AND THEREBY ROSE ABOVE HIS ENVIRONMENT.

PERHAPS THE SOUTH, THE NATION AND THE WORLD ARE IN DIRE NEED OF CREATIVE EXTREMISTS." IT IS MY HOPE THAT THE EDMOND SCHOOL BOARD WILL CONSIDER RESTORING THE NAME BLACK HISTORY MONTH FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY RATHER THAN USING THE CONTROVERSIAL AND EXCLUSIONARY TITLE BLACK LIVES MATTER MONTH THAT WAS ADOPTED IN THE LAST TWO YEARS.

SURELY MLK AND JESUS HIMSELF MUST WEEP OVER THE VIOLENCE AND BIGOTRY THAT BLM ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR.

PLEASE GET BACK TO EDUCATING OUR STUDENTS, NOT INDOCTRINATING THEM IN MARXIST RHETORIC. [NOISE] THANK YOU.

>> [APPLAUSE] NEXT IS JERRY WHITWORTH.

RCW 28A.300.475. THANK YOU.

[APPLAUSE] THERE WERE SO MANY RCWS, I JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE THEM.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU.

>> NEXT UP IS SARAH DILLING.

>> I APPRECIATE THAT THE BOARD HAS ADOPTED THE CONCEPT OF BLACK LIVES MATTER MONTH OF ACTION THIS YEAR AS A BIT OF A PRESENT, NOW CURRENT ACCENT ON THE TRADITIONAL.

SINCE 1986 WHEN A LAW WAS PASSED BY CONGRESS, THERE HAD BEEN PRESIDENTIAL PROCLAMATION STARTING IN '76, BUT IT WASN'T ACTUALLY A LAW UNTIL '86 AND I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN HIGH SCHOOL.

BUT I GUESS A LAW IN 1986 FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH.

THE ASL TRANSLATION OF BLACK LIVES MATTER DEPENDS ON THE TRANSLATOR OF COURSE.

I'VE HEARD IT ROUGHLY RE-TRANSLATED BACK TO SPOKEN ENGLISH AS BLACK LIVES HAVE VALUE AND ALSO BLACK LIVES ARE CHERISHED.

THAT DIFFERENCE IN TRANSLATION AND ALL THE OTHER POTENTIAL WORDS THAT ARE CONTAINED WITHIN THE CONCEPT OF MATTER, THOSE ARE THE THINGS THAT I THINK OF WHEN I HEAR THE PHRASE BLACK LIVES MATTER, OR SEE THE ABBREVIATION BLM, THAT IS WHEN I'M NOT WONDERING WHY THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT IS BEING INVOKED.

BUT YES, I DON T THINK OF AN ORGANIZATION.

I DON T THINK OF A MANSION SOMEWHERE, THE PURCHASE, POSSIBLY WITH THE ILL-GOTTEN GAINS.

I THINK OF THE FACT THAT LIVES HAVE VALUE.

I DO WANT TO LEAVE THE BOARD WITH A QUESTION TODAY FROM A LETTER WRITTEN IN 2013 FROM ONE OF MY FAVORITE AFROFUTURIST AUTHORS N K JEMISON.

HOW LONG TILL BLACK FUTURE MONTH?

>> THAT ENDS THE PUBLIC COMMENTS FOR THIS EVENING.

[00:30:02]

NEXT ON OUR AGENDA IS OUR CONSENT AGENDA.

[9. CONSENT AGENDA-7:20 pm]

OUR CONSENT AGENDA IS A LIST OF RELATIVELY ROUTINE ITEMS THAT WE LOOK AT AND VOTE ON IT AS A BLOCK, BUT WE CAN SEPARATE OUT IF WE SO CHOOSE TO DO THAT.

TONIGHT ON OUR CONSENT AGENDA, WE HAVE 12 ITEMS. ONE HAS TO DO WITH PERSONNEL, ONE HAS TO DO WITH IMPROVING SURPLUS OF OUR DISTRICT CHROMEBOOKS THAT ARE OBSOLETE NOW, WE GET MONEY BACK FOR TRADE IN.

TWO HAVE TO DO WITH HIRING SPECIAL EDUCATION PARAEDUCATORS THROUGH AN OUTSIDE VENDOR TO HELP US FILL UNFILLED POSITIONS THAT NEED TO BE FILLED TO MEET OUR STUDENTS NEEDS AND EIGHT OF THE CONSENT AGENDA ITEMS HAVE TO DO WITH FIELD TRIPS.

DO I HEAR A MOTION AND A SECOND TO APPROVE TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA.

>> MOVE TO APPROVE. SECOND.

>> I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE IN A SECOND.

IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE.

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF APPROVING TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA, PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE.

>> AYE.

>> ALL THOSE OPPOSED, PLEASE SAY NAY AND ANY ABSTENTIONS.

TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA IS APPROVED AS PRESENTED.

>> THIS EVENING WE HAVE FOUR ITEMS OF UNFINISHED BUSINESS.

[10. UNFINISHED BUSINESS- 7:50 pm]

THESE ARE ALL POLICY AMENDMENTS FOR US.

THE FIRST ONE IS THE SECOND READING AND A RECOMMENDATION BY STAFF TO ADOPT REVISED BOARD POLICY 2418-WAIVER OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION CREDITS.

THIS WAS BROUGHT FORWARD BY ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT GREGG SCHWAB, AND THERE HAD BEEN NO CHANGES MADE SINCE THE FIRST AND SECOND READING.

>> DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND FOR THE READING OF THE REVISED BOARD POLICY 2418-WAIVER OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION CREDITS.

>> SO MOVED.

>> I SECOND.

>> I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE IN A SECOND.

IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? I'D LIKE TO SAY SOMETHING.

I SAW SOME COMMENTS ON SOCIAL LOCAL MEDIA OF WHAT SEEMED LIKE JUST A REACTION TO THE TITLE OF THIS POLICY, THAT IT SOUNDED LIKE WE WERE JUST GIVING RANDOM WAIVERS TO ANY KIDS WHO WE WANTED TO AND IT'S NOT ANYTHING LIKE THAT.

I SUGGEST THAT IF YOU'RE INTERESTED, YOU ACTUALLY READ THE POLICY OR ANY OF THE POLICIES THAT ARE PUBLIC.

BUT BASICALLY IT HAS TO DO WITH STUDENTS WHO ARE IN SPECIFIC CIRCUMSTANCES THAT HAVE MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR THEM TO MEET ALL THE 24 FULL CREDITS THAT ARE REQUIRED NOW BY THE STATE, BUT THEY STILL MUST MEET ALL THE REQUIREMENTS AND ALL THE CORE COURSES PLUS SEVERAL OTHER COURSES.

IT'S STILL QUITE RIGOROUS AND IT'S VERY SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES, NOT JUST ANY STUDENT.

I JUST WANTED TO CLARIFY.

ANY OTHER COMMENTS.

I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.

>> DIRECTOR NOBLE,.

>> AYE.

>> DIRECTOR CHASE.

>> AYE.

>> DIRECTOR KILGORE.

>> AYE.

>> DIRECTOR CADENCE.

>> AYE.

>> THE REVISED BOARD POLICY 2418-THE WAIVER OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION CREDITS IS APPROVED.

>> SECOND ITEM UNDER UNFINISHED BUSINESS THIS EVENING IS THE SECOND READING AND A RECOMMENDATION TO ADOPT A REVISED BOARD POLICY 4200-PARENT ACCESS AND SAFE AND ORDERLY LEARNING ENVIRONMENT.

BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND READINGS, WE DID MAKE SOME GRAMMATICAL CHANGES TO CORRECT GRAMMATICAL ERRORS, BUT NO CHANGES TO THE CONTENT WERE MADE AND THANK YOU TO ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT GREGG SCHWAB FOR BRINGING THIS A CENTRAL POLICY FORWARD.

>> DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE IN A SECOND FOR REVISED BOARD POLICY 4200-PARENT ACCESS AND SAFE AND ORDERLY LEARNING ENVIRONMENT.

>> I MOVE TO APPROVE.

>> SECOND.

>> I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE IN A SECOND.

IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE. I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.

>> DIRECTOR NOBLE,.

>> AYE.

>> DIRECTOR CHASE,.

>> AYE.

>> DIRECTOR KILGORE.

.>> AYE.

>> DIRECTOR CADENCE.

>> AYE. THE REVISED BOARD POLICY 4200 ON PARENT ACCESS AND SAFE AND ORDERLY LEARNING ENVIRONMENT IS APPROVED.

[11. NEW BUSINESS 8:10 pm]

IT'S A SINGLE READING TO APPROVE THE EDMOND SCHOOL DISTRICT AFFIRMATIVE ACTION PLAN 2021-2026.

THIS WAS BROUGHT TO US BY ROB BAUMGARTNER.

YOU MAY RECALL THAT WE HAD A STUDY SESSION FOR THIS ON JANUARY 24TH AND BOARD POLICY 5010 DOES MAKE EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY, DOES MAKE IT A REQUIREMENT THAT WE CAN HAVE THIS PLAN IN PLACE EVERY FIVE YEARS?

>> DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND FOR THE EDMOND SCHOOL DISTRICT AND AFFIRMATIVE ACTION PLAN FROM 2021-2026.

>> I MOVE TO APPROVE.

>> SECOND.

>> I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND, IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? FIRST OF ALL, I WANT TO THANK ROB BAUMGARTNER AND JARED ARAGON.

IF I SAY YOUR NAME CORRECTLY, YOU DID AN AMAZING JOB ON CREATING THIS REPORT.

IT WAS REALLY HELPFUL.

THE DATA WERE CLEAR AND QUITE COMPREHENSIVE.

I'D LIKE TO JUST SHARE WITH THE BOARD AND THE PUBLIC AND THE BOARD ALREADY KNOWS, BUT WE'RE DEFINITELY MAKING PROGRESS WHILE WE STILL HAVE MORE PROGRESS TO MAKE AN IMPROVEMENT IN TERMS OF HAVING OUR STAFF DEMOGRAPHICS REFLECT OUR STUDENT DEMOGRAPHICS FROM 2016-2022, WHICH IS A PERIOD OF SIX YEARS.

WE INCREASED OUR MINORITY PERCENTAGE OF OUR STAFF.

THIS IS ACROSS ALL OF THE CATEGORIES AND WE HAVE THEM BROKEN DOWN, BUT ACROSS ALL OF THEM FROM 12.6-19.9 PERCENT.

WE'RE DEFINITELY MAKING PROGRESS, WHICH IS VERY GOOD TO SEE.

WE OBVIOUSLY ALWAYS HIRE EVERYBODY WHO IS THE MOST COMPETENT FOR ANY POSITION.

BUT WE ALSO REALLY WANT TO SEE OUR STAFF AT THE SAME TIME REFLECT OUR STUDENT DEMOGRAPHICS.

THANK YOU FOR THE REPORT AND ALSO TO EVERYBODY ACROSS THE DISTRICT BECAUSE THIS IS EVERYBODY'S WORK MOVING TOWARD HAVING OUR STAFF REFLECT OUR STUDENT POPULATION. THAT WAS DISCUSSION. [OVERLAPPING]

>> DID YOU VOTE?

>> NOW IT'S TIME FOR ME. [LAUGHTER] I'M GOING TO CALL FOR ROLL CALL.

>> DIRECTOR, NOBEL.

>> AYE.

>> DIRECTOR CHASE.

>> AYE.

>> DIRECTOR KILGORE.

>> AYE.

>> DIRECTOR CADENCE.

>> AYE. OUR AFFIRMATIVE ACTION PLAN 2021-2026 IS APPROVED.

WE DON'T HAVE ADDITIONAL PUBLIC COMMENTS AARON, RIGHT? NEXT I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO DIRECTOR CHASE FOR OUR LEGISLATIVE UPDATE.

[13. LEGISLATIVE UPDATES]

>> THANK YOU, DIRECTOR CADENCE.

WELL, WE ARE VERY BUSY IN OLYMPIA TRACKING BILLS.

WAZDA IS TRACKING 155 BILLS RIGHT NOW RELATED TO EDUCATION.

WE'RE AT THE WEEK WHERE ACTION HAS TO BE TAKEN BY THIS FRIDAY IN THE HOUSE OF ORIGIN, SPECIFICALLY LINKING TO OUR LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES FOR THE DISTRICT, THE BILL TO FEED ALL STUDENTS, PROVIDING FREE SCHOOL MEALS FOR ALL, WHICH IS A HOUSE BILL 1238, AND THERE'S A COMPANION BILL IN THE SENATE.

THE HOUSE BILL WAS RECOMMENDED DUE PASS THIS LAST WEEK AND IS IN APPROPRIATION.

THAT'S MOVING ALONG QUITE WELL.

I'LL TAKE A QUICK LOOK OF THE SENATE BILL 2, SAME THING WITH THE COMPANION BILL IN THE SENATE IS ALSO MOVING ALONG NICELY.

LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THAT ON THE FLOOR CALENDARS SO THAT WE CAN MAKE SURE THAT ALL CHILDREN HAVE ENOUGH TO EAT BECAUSE WE KNOW YOU CAN'T LEARN IF YOU'RE HUNGRY.

ON SPECIAL ED, THE OTHER THING THAT WE'RE PARTICULARLY TRACKING THERE

[00:40:03]

WAS A HOUSE BILL 1436, WHICH WAS MOVING AROUND ALONG NICELY.

THEN 24 HOURS BEFORE THE HEARING, A SUBSTITUTE BILL WAS SUBMITTED, AND THIS NEW SECTION WAS ADDED THAT WOULD DIVERT 50 PERCENT OF BASIC EDUCATION ALLOWANCES, MEANING THE GENERAL FUND TO SPECIAL ED.

THAT MEANS THAT STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES ARE PLACED IN A SPECIAL ED SETTING.

THE MORE BASIC EDUCATION FUNDS WOULD BE DIVERTED TO SPECIAL ED UP TO THE 50 PERCENT CAP.

THIS COULD BE INTERPRETED AS A DISINCENTIVE FOR INCLUSION.

THIS IS OUR INFORMATION THAT WE GOT FROM WAZDA.

WE'RE TRACKING THIS BILL GOING TO SEE, I DID NOT SEE THE PROGRESS AS IT MOVES FORWARD.

I DID NOT ATTEND OSBIS MEETING WITH WITH CHRIS RECTALL.

WAS THERE ANYTHING ELSE TO ADD ON THIS BILL, ANYBODY THAT WAS THERE?

>> NOTHING.

>> IT WAS DISAPPOINTING.

>> DISAPPOINTING. BUT WE'RE GOING TO KEEP PUSHING AT THE LEGISLATURE TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE'S A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING THAT WE NEED TO BE ADEQUATELY FUNDED HERE FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS.

I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO DOWN THE HILL COMING UP ON THE NEXT, NOT THIS COMING MONDAY, BUT THE FOLLOWING WHERE WE'RE GOING BE GOING DOWN WITH STUDENTS AND ADVOCATING WITH OUR LEGISLATORS.

WE DO HAVE APPOINTMENTS SCHEDULED ARE OFFERED WITH OFFICES OF ALL OF OUR NINE REPRESENTATIVES DOWN OLYMPIA.

SOME WILL BE ON THE FLOOR, SOME WILL BE SET TO MEET WITH AIDS.

HOWEVER, THERE'S AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO MEET WITH OTHER EDUCATION LEADERS.

I NEED TO RSVP ON WHICH MEETINGS WERE ATTENDING.

I'M GOING TO TAKE A BROAD STROKE AT WHICH ONES WE CAN ATTEND.

WE'LL TRY TO ATTEND ALL OF THEM.

THESE ARE 15-MINUTE MEETINGS WITH THEIR LEGISLATORS OR STAFF TO ADVOCATE FOR OUR DISTRICT PRIORITIES AND EDUCATION IN ALIGNMENT WITH SUPERINTENDENTS, STUDENTS, TEACHERS, AND SCHOOL BOARD DIRECTORS.

THAT'S COMING RIGHT UP.

THE SPREADSHEET FOR ALL THE APPOINTMENTS IS A LITTLE CUMBERSOME, SO I'LL SHARE IT IF WE HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS WITH OUR STUDENTS ON WHAT TIME.

WE'D HAVE TO BE DOWN THERE BY 08:00.

I THINK THAT SHOULD BE NO PROBLEM, WE'LL MISS TRAFFIC.

THAT SAID I'VE GOT A LEGISLATIVE UPDATE THAT I CAN FORWARD AND I BELIEVE I DID FORWARD IT BECAUSE THERE'S A LAUNDRY LIST OF BILLS THAT WAZDA IS TRACKING AND IN PARTICULAR, THERE'S FUNDING FOR DISTRICTS FOR SPECIAL ED.

WE'VE GOT A NUMBER OF OUR LEADERS IN FEDERAL WAY IN SEATTLE TESTIFYING ON BEHALF OF THESE BILLS AND SEE WHAT'S THE OTHER ONE? THERE WAS ONE GRADUATION.

HOUSE BILL 1658 WAS AUTHORIZING PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO EARN ELECTIVE CREDITS FOR PAID WORK EXPERIENCE.

THAT'S AN INTERESTING ONE THAT I'M JUST PAYING ATTENTION TO AND WE'LL SEE WHERE THAT ONE GOES ALSO, ALONG WITH THE GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS.

ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY FIVE BILLS.

IT MAY CHANGE BY THE TIME THIS FRIDAY COMES UP, SO WE'LL HAVE SOME UPDATES THERE.

>> THANK YOU. I WAS PLEASED TO SEE OUR REPRESENTATIVE, SUSAN DELL BENNY COMING AND MEETING WITH DR. MINER TODAY AND ARE HAVING A CHANCE TO ADVOCATE WITH HER.

SHE'S A STRONG EDUCATOR SUPPORTERS, SO WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO.

>> SEND MORE MONEY. [LAUGHTER]

>> YEAH. I THINK IT WAS MORE.

[LAUGHTER]

>> DID YOU WANT TO ADD ANYTHING TO THE LEGISLATIVE UPDATE?

>> LOOKING FORWARD TO OUR TRIP DOWN AND HAVING OUR STUDENTS BE A PART OF OUR ADVOCACY.

>> GREAT. THANK YOU, DIRECTOR CHASE VERY MUCH.

WE APPRECIATE THIS [NOISE] IS HOT TIME.

>> IT'S GETTING EXCITED.

>> IT'S GETTING EXCITING.

>> IF ANYONE WANTS TO TRACK THIS AND YOU HAVE A ROKU TVW HAS GOT ITS OWN CHANNEL.

YOU CAN JUST HAVE IT ON THE BACKGROUND WATCHING US HEARINGS.

[LAUGHTER] THERE'S MANY CHANNELS GOING ON AND MANY HEARINGS AND THEY'RE FUN TO WATCH, I THINK.

>> SOMETIMES.

>> YEAH. SOMETIMES. [LAUGHTER]

[14. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS]

>> NEXT ART BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS.

WE'LL START WITH SADIE AND THANK YOU FOR BEING OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TONIGHT.

WE'RE GLAD YOU'RE HERE.

>> WELL, I'M GLAD I'M HERE.

[LAUGHTER] I'M REALLY GRATEFUL FOR ALL THE TECH PEOPLE BECAUSE IT'S BEEN A STRUGGLE, IF NOT HAVING CANVAS OR ANY OF THE ELECTRONICS FOR SCHOOLING.

IT WAS FUNNY ME AND MY FRIENDS WHO BOUGHT TYPE WRITERS [LAUGHTER].

[00:45:02]

I JUST SEE TO GO BACK IN THE SCHOOL AGE FROM A COUPLE DECADES AGO.

BUT HONESTLY, THE DEDICATION THAT YOU GUYS HAVE TO GET US BACK TO WHERE WE ARE AND TO STRENGTHEN OUR SCHOOL AND OUR SECURITY IS REALLY AMAZING.

I'M JUST REALLY APPRECIATE YOU GUYS.

>> THANK YOU. WE'RE GLAD.

THANKS FOR GETTING BACK TO NORMAL. DIRECTOR NOBLE.

>> YEAH. WELL, FIRST, I'D LIKE TO PERSONALLY CONGRATULATE DR. MINER.

I'M THRILLED THAT YOU ACCEPTED OUR OFFER FOR PERMANENT SUPERINTENDENT.

I'D LIKE TO THANK MY FELLOW BOARD MEMBERS A LOT OF OUR DELIBERATIONS, A LOT OF OUR WHOLE SELECTION PROCESS WAS DONE IN PRIVATE, BUT IN EXECUTIVE SESSIONS.

BUT I WANTED TO TELL YOU IT WAS A REALLY STRONG, SUBSTANTIAL PROCESS THAT WE WENT THROUGH.

WE HAD SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF VERY GOOD CANDIDATES WHEN WE FIRST STARTED.

GOING THROUGH THEM, THE WORK THE CANDIDATES HAVE TO GO THROUGH EVEN TO APPLY IS AMAZING.

IT WAS A REALLY ROBUST PROCESS WE WENT THROUGH AND I'M JUST THRILLED WITH OUR RESULTS, BUT I WANTED TO THANK MY FELLOW BOARD MEMBERS FOR MAKING THIS PROCESS SO SMOOTH AND ROBUST, AND ALSO COME UP WITH THE CONCLUSION THAT I WANTED TO COME OUT WITH.

[LAUGHTER] THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

THE OTHER THING, THE TECH ARE HERE, SO WE'VE GOT ONE TECH HERE, BUT THEY'VE BEEN AMAZING OVER THE LAST TWO WEEKS.

IT'S BEEN HORRIBLY INCONVENIENT FOR EVERYBODY.

BUT THEY HAVE PUT IN THE OVERTIME ON TOP OF OVERTIME TO GET OUR NETWORK BACK.

IT WAS A REALLY SERIOUS ISSUE WE HAD AND THEY'VE JUST WORKED AND WORKED.

THANK YOU FOR OUR TECHNOLOGY TEAM FOR ALL THE WORK YOU'VE DONE AND GETTING US BACK ONLINE. THAT'S ALL I HAVE.

>> THANK YOU. DIRECTOR CHASE.

>>THANK YOU GARY. I DO WANT TO SAY IT IS A PLEASURE WORKING WITH SUCH A HIGH FUNCTIONING PROFESSIONAL BOARD.

I DO APPRECIATE SERVING WITH ALL OF YOU AND WELCOME TO THE PERMANENT POSITION, DR. MINER.

I FORGOT TO MENTION ONE BILL TOO, ITS ON GRADUATION PATHWAYS BECAUSE I DO KNOW THAT THAT'S ONE THING THAT WE'RE REALLY TRACKING HERE AND THE HOUSE BILL ON GRADUATION PATHWAYS OPTIONS EXECUTIVE ACTION WAS TAKEN IN THE HOUSE COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION YESTERDAY.

HOWEVER, I'M NOT SURE WHAT THAT WAS.

I'M ASSUMING IT WAS PASSED FORWARD.

I WAS HOPING TO HAVE A HIGHER REPORT TO GIVE TO OUR DISTRICT, BUT I DON'T HAVE THAT.

JUST WANTED TO MENTION THAT THE GRADUATION PATHWAYS IS ALSO HIGH PRIORITY THEM I'M TRACKING DOWN THERE.

I WAS THRILLED TO ALSO, THANK YOU TECH FOLKS.

I DON T THINK WE CAN SAY THAT ENOUGH.

I'M GOING TO SAY AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR REPRESENTING THE ENTIRE TECH DEPARTMENT TODAY.

[LAUGHTER] I HAVE THE PRIVILEGE TO TOUR CHASE LIKE ELEMENTARY TODAY AND IT'S JUST, I SO ENJOY BEING ABLE TO BE IN THE CLASSROOMS WITH THE KIDS AS THEY'RE LEARNING AND ENJOYING.

I'M JUST SO THRILLED AT THE QUALITY OF THE BUILDINGS THAT WE HAVE IN THIS DISTRICT.

I'LL PROBABLY WANT TO SAY SOME MORE ABOUT IT, SO I'LL LEAVE IT UP TO FOR DIRECTOR KILGORE TO CONTINUE. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU. WELL, WELCOME, DR. MINER, WE'RE ALSO HAPPY TO HAVE YOU.

AS I SAID TO YOU EARLIER, I THINK THAT THE SEDIMENT IS ACROSS THE DISTRICT, AND EVERY DEPARTMENT AMONG OUR PARENTS AND OUR STUDENTS, EVERYONE'S JUST SO THRILLED AND SO THANK YOU FOR JOINING US.

THANK YOU, TECH. OH MY GOSH, WHAT A MESS WE HAD, BUT OUR TECH DEPARTMENT WORKED NIGHT AND DAY TO GET US BACK UP AND HOPEFULLY BETTER THAN WE WERE BEFORE AND LESS VULNERABLE TO BAD ACTS.

[NOISE] I AM NOT GOING TO GO INTO DETAIL, BUT THE HEALTHY YOUTH SURVEY CAME OUT IN THE NEW YORK TIMES.

SOME OF THE FINDINGS ARE CONCERNING, SOME OF OUR KIDS AREN'T DOING SO WELL, AREN'T FEELING SO WELL BUT I THINK THAT OUR DISTRICT IS DOING INCREDIBLE WORK TO TURN THIS AROUND FOR OUR KIDS, AND WE SAW IT TODAY AT CHASE LAKE.

I ALSO JOINED THE TOUR OF CHASE LAKE AND I LOVE GOING TO THAT SCHOOL, IT'S GOT SUCH A GREAT VIBE, GREAT BUILDING, GREAT STAFF THERE AND OUR KIDS SURE ARE LEARNING.

ONE OF THE PRINCIPAL THERE, SEAN SILVER, SHARED SOME OF THEIR STATISTICS ABOUT THAT SENSE OF BELONGING, AND IT'S PRETTY HIGH THERE.

THE KIDS HAVE ADULTS

[00:50:01]

THAT THEY CAN COUNT ON THAT THEY FEEL THAT THEY CAN GO TO AND COUNT ON.

OF COURSE, THEIR READING SCORES ARE GETTING BETTER, AND IT'S REALLY EXCITING WORK THAT'S GOING ON OVER THERE.

ONE OF THE THINGS I SAW THAT I WAS VERY INTERESTED IN, TALKED TO THE LIBRARIAN ABOUT HER, SHE HAD A DISPLAY WITH SOME OF THE BOOKS FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH AND THEY WERE WONDERFUL BOOKS.

THEY NOT ONLY INTRODUCED US TO PEOPLE WE KNOW PRESIDENT OBAMA AND MARTIN LUTHER KING, BUT PEOPLE WE DON'T KNOW, AND THAT'S THE IMPORTANT THING IS TO LEARN ABOUT ALL THE PEOPLE WHO MADE SUCH IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTIONS AND CONTINUE TO MAKE IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO OUR COUNTRY AND TO OUR SCIENCE AND ART.

THESE MONTHS THAT WE HAVE AND WE HAVE A SPECIAL CELEBRATIONS IN EVERY MONTH ARE MEANT TO HIGHLIGHT PEOPLE WHO IN THE PAST WE DIDN'T LEARN ABOUT.

CERTAINLY IN MY GENERATION, WE DIDN'T GET THE EDUCATION THAT THE KIDS ARE GETTING TODAY.

THEY ARE GETTING A MUCH BETTER EDUCATION IN THAT RESPECT THAN I GOT.

SO ANYWAY, I'M SEEING REALLY GOOD WORK IN THE SCHOOLS.

WE STILL ALWAYS CAN DO BETTER BUT WHAT WE'RE SEEING IN THE SCHOOLS IS JUST REALLY EXCITING STUFF AND REALLY POSITIVE STUFF.

THANK YOU CHASE LAKE FOR HAVING US, I CAN'T WAIT TO GO TO THE NEXT SCHOOL.

>> GREAT. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE COMMENTS EVERYBODY HAS MADE.

I'M GOING TO BE A LITTLE REDUNDANT.

I WANT TO THANK ALL OF OUR COMMUNITY, ALL SECTORS OF THE COMMUNITY FOR THEIR INPUT THROUGHOUT THE SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH FROM THE VERY BEGINNING WHEN WE DID THE COMMUNITY SURVEY AND WE GOT OVER 1,300 RESPONSES FROM WHICH WE BUILT A PROFILE OF THE NINE MOST IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTICS OF WHAT EVERYBODY WANTED TO SEE IN A SUPERINTENDENT.

AND I THINK WE SEE THAT IN DR. MINER.

WE DID A GOOD JOB.

BUT ALSO ALL OF THE INPUT FROM THE COMMUNITY AND EVERYBODY ELSE THROUGH THE PROCESS, WE HAD PEOPLE WHO HELPED US IN OUR SEMI-FINALISTS INTERVIEWS AND THEN AT THE COMMUNITY FORUM, IT WAS WONDERFUL TO SEE A RELATIVELY FULL GYM AT THE MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL.

WE READ THROUGH EVERY ONE OF THOSE INPUT FORMS. WE ALSO HAD MEETINGS WITH ALL OF OUR STAKEHOLDERS IN TERMS OF STAFF, WHO ALSO GAVE US WONDERFUL INPUT, AND I WOULD HAVE TO SECOND THE COMMENT THAT IT'S ACROSS THE BOARD THAT PEOPLE ARE QUITE PLEASED THAT YOU ARE WILLING AND HAPPY TO JOIN US BECAUSE WE'RE WILLING AND HAPPY TO HAVE YOU [LAUGHTER] PUT IT MILDLY.

I ALSO REALLY WANT TO THANK THE TECH STAFF.

THEY HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLE.

THEY HAVE BEEN WORKING 204/7 TO TRY TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE BEEN A SAFE AND WE WILL BE PROTECTED IN THE FUTURE AS POSSIBLE TO AVOID AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE IN TERMS OF, THE WORD WAS BAD ACTORS OR BAD THINGS HAPPENING WHICH HAPPEN EVERYWHERE UNFORTUNATELY, BUT WE DON'T WANT THEM TO HAPPEN TO US.

OUR STUDENTS AND OUR STAFF HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLY PATIENT IN GOING BACK TO WHAT WAS TERMED THE 1990S ARE THE 1800S OR SOMETHING, [LAUGHTER] REALLY LONG TIME AGO, LIKE THE WAY WE LEARN.

BUT EVERYBODY IS PIVOTED AND THERE'S STILL LEARNING GOING ON BECAUSE YOU CAN SIT WITHOUT ANY COMPUTERS, READ A BOOK AND HAVE A GREAT CONVERSATION ABOUT WHAT YOU READ IN THAT BOOK OR WRITE ABOUT IT.

THERE'S A LOT OF WONDERFUL THINGS WE CAN DO WITHOUT TECHNOLOGY EVEN THOUGH WE RELY HEAVILY ON TECHNOLOGY, WHICH IS IMPORTANT, BUT THE TECH STAFF HAS BEEN INCREDIBLE.

ALSO, I WANT TO THANK THE WHOLE BOARD FOR WE DON'T ALWAYS AGREE, BUT WE'RE ALWAYS CORDIAL AND WE ALWAYS LISTEN TO EACH OTHER AND WE COME TO GOOD DECISIONS AND THAT'S WHAT MATTERS THE MOST.

I WILL TURN IT OVER TO DR. MINER.

>> SORRY. BREAK THE ORDER BECAUSE I FORGOT AND I SHOULDN'T HAVE.

THANK YOU. DR. KATAMS, FOR LEADING US IN THIS PROCESS. [OVERLAPPING] [LAUGHTER].

>> THANK YOU.

>> INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF WORK THAT YOU DID AND YOU LEAD US THROUGH A WONDERFUL, TRANSPARENT PROCESS.

>> I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT. THANK YOU.

I DO HAVE TO SAY IT WAS A LITTLE MORE CHALLENGING WITH NO TECHNOLOGY.

[LAUGHTER] DR. MINER.

>> WELL, I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU FOR YOUR KIND COMMENTS THIS EVENING AND I WILL CONTINUE TO WORK HARD EACH AND EVERY DAY TO CONTINUE TO EARN THE COMMUNITY'S TRUST THAT THEY HAVE PLACED IN ME.

I DON'T TAKE THAT LIGHTLY AND I WILL CONTINUE TO WORK VERY HARD TO DESERVE THAT TRUST.

COUPLE OF THINGS; GREGG SCHWAB AND I WERE ABLE TO DO OUR SAFETY PLAN UPDATE, WE DO AT MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL AND THAT WAS RECORDED.

[00:55:03]

I WOULD ENCOURAGE ANYBODY WHO'S INTERESTED IT'S AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE, TAKE A LOOK AT THAT AND I HOPE THAT PROVIDES SOME INFORMATION FOR FOLKS.

ON SATURDAY, I WAS ABLE TO GO TO THE STUDENT'S SERVICES FAIR, AND WHAT A JOY TO HAVE THAT IN-PERSON.

AGAIN, WE HAD SO MANY FAMILIES COME, SO MANY COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS FROM THE, [INAUDIBLE], THAT ONE BECAUSE I MIGHT GET IT WRONG, BUT WE HAVE THE GIRL'S SCOUTS THERE, THE BOY'S SCOUTS THERE, NAMI, ALL ORGANIZATIONS JUST REPRESENTING SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES AND SUPPORT FOR OUR STUDENTS.

IT WAS JUST TREMENDOUS. THERE WAS A LOT OF FUN.

SPEAKING OF FUN, BEFORE OUR NEXT BOARD MEETING COMES UP, WE ARE GOING TO HAVE OUR KINDERGARTEN FAIR, WELCOMING ANY YOUNG CHILDREN TO COME WITH THEIR FAMILIES, OF COURSE, AND IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN LEARNING ABOUT KINDERGARTEN OR OPPORTUNITIES IN THE DISTRICT, LOTS OF FUN THINGS AVAILABLE, THEIR FACE PAINTING, WILL HAVE TO GO KID THAT WHERE YOU CAN GET ACTIVITIES TO PRACTICE WITH YOUR CHILDREN.

YOU CAN REGISTER ON-SITE.

YOU CAN HOP ON A SCHOOL BUS, WE'LL HAVE A PHOTO BOOTH, ALL FUN THINGS THAT WE HOPE WILL ENGAGE OUR YOUNGEST LEARNERS AND GET THEM EXCITED ABOUT COMING TO SCHOOL.

>> I'M JUST GOING TO ADD A LITTLE FOOTNOTE TO THAT, THAT WE HAD A VERY HELPFUL COMMENT FROM ONE OF OUR STAFF MEMBERS THAT PRESCHOOL IS ALSO A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF WHAT WE DO IN EARLY LEARNING IN THE DISTRICT.

WE HOPE THAT THE PERSPECTIVE KINDERGARTENERS WILL COME WITH YOUNGER SIBLINGS AS WELL SO PARENTS CAN LEARN ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON IN TERMS OF PRESCHOOL AS WELL.

>> ABSOLUTELY.

>> THE LAST THING ON OUR AGENDA IS ANY ITEMS THAT ANYBODY HAS FOR FUTURE MEETINGS, CONSIDERATION FOR FUTURE MEETINGS? ANY TOPICS? NO, WE'RE GOOD. WELL, THEN THIS REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING OF THE ADMIN SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF DIRECTORS IS ADJOURNED.
