IT'S TO EASE THE TRANSITION FROM ELEMENTARY TO MIDDLE SCHOOL.

THERE'S ALSO STUDENT TO STUDENT MENTORING AND TO DEVELOP LEADERSHIP AND SOCIAL SKILLS.

WHO ARE MMS WEB LEADERS? MMS WEB LEADERS ARE EIGHTH GRADERS WHO HELP SEVENTH GRADERS WITH THE TRANSITION FROM SEVENTH GRADE TO EIGHTH GRADE.

AND ANYBODY CAN BE AN EIGHTH.

ANYBODY CAN BE A WEB LEADER.

IN THE SPRING, THERE'S SOMETHING CALLED THE PLAY DAY WHERE ANYONE CAN GO AND APPLY TO BE A WEB LEADER AND THE ONES THAT GET IN.

THE ONLY QUALIFICATIONS YOU NEED IS TO BE KIND AND TO BE DEPENDABLE SO YOU CAN SHOW UP TO THE TRAINING AND THINGS AND HAVE THE SEVENTH GRADERS RELY ON YOU.

TRAINING. SO THE WEB LEADERS, THEY NORMALLY GO FOR TWO FIVE HOUR TRAINING SESSIONS TOWARDS THE END OF AUGUST.

AND THEN WE JUST WORK ON ALL THE ACTIVITIES THAT WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING WITH THE SEVENTH GRADERS.

AND SO IT'S REALLY FUN, THOUGH, WHAT WE GET LIKE PIZZA AND STUFF.

SO, YEAH. AND THEN.

YEAH. SO THIS IS US PRACTICING? YEAH. THIS IS SEVENTH GRADE ORIENTATION.

SORRY, THE SEVENTH GRADE ORIENTATION, THE LIKE THE BIG DAY.

THE SEVENTH GRADERS WILL COME TO THE GYM FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS.

FOR THE FIRST ABOUT 30 MINUTES.

THEY WILL PLAY SOME GROUP GAMES WITH THE ENTIRE GROUP, THE TEACHERS AND EVERYTHING.

AND THEN WE SPLIT OFF INTO OUR WEB GROUPS TO SUPERVISORS, EIGHTH GRADERS WHO VOLUNTEERED FOR WEB AND 9 TO 12 SEVENTH GRADERS.

WE USUALLY PLAY ACTIVITIES THAT HELP THEM PREPARE FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND WE JUST GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER AND WE HAVE FUN.

WE ALSO WE GET TO MEET STUDENTS, MAKE FRIENDS, WE LEARN EACH OTHER'S NAMES.

WE LEARN ABOUT EACH OTHER'S HOBBIES, INTERESTS, AND WE MAKE SURE OUR SEVENTH GRADERS ARE READY TO GO TO MIDDLE SCHOOL.

WHAT WE DO AT THE ORIENTATION IS WE GIVE THEM A TOUR AROUND THE SCHOOL, AROUND THEIR LEARNING ENVIRONMENT.

WE ALSO SHOW THEM THE STAFF MEMBERS THAT CAN HELP THEM ROUND THE PLACE, THE SCHOOL PLACE.

THEY ALSO GET THEIR CLASS SCHEDULES AT THE END OF THE ORIENTATION AND MOST IMPORTANT THING, THEY ALL HAVE FUN.

IN THIS PHOTO, WE CAN SEE THIS IS ACTUALLY THE DAY OF ORIENTATION DAY.

AND AS YOU CAN SEE, WE ARE DOING SOME ACTIVITIES AND WE ARE WE ACTUALLY HAD A LOT OF FUN DOING ALL THESE FUN ACTIVITIES.

AND WITH THESE ACTIVITIES WE LEARNED HOW TO WE LEARN SOME SKILLS LIKE SOCIALIZING AND SOME LEADERSHIP.

ON ORIENTATION DAY WITH OUR SEVENTH GRADERS.

WE DO WHAT'S CALLED THE STRAW CHALLENGE, ONE OF OUR ACTIVITIES.

AND WE ACTUALLY JUST HAD OUR FIRST MEETING ONE WEEK AGO AND IT WENT WELL.

WE'RE TRYING TO MAKE SURE EVERYBODY KNOWS THEIR NAMES AND TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS GOING GREAT AT THE START OF OUR MMS SCHOOL YEAR. AND ALL OF THESE ACTIVITIES WILL APPEAR DURING HOMEROOM.

HOW DOES WEB BENEFIT MMS? HOW IT MOST BENEFITS OUR SCHOOL IS IT REALLY HELPS THE SEVENTH GRADERS TRANSITION FROM LIKE AN ELEMENTARY ENVIRONMENT TO A MIDDLE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT AND WHAT THAT'S LIKE.

AND IT ALSO TEACHES THE WEB LEADERS SOME LEADERSHIP SKILLS SO THEY DON'T HAVE AN ADULT IN THE ROOM WHEN THEY'RE WITH THIS GROUP OF KIDS.

SO IT TEACHES THEM HOW TO CONTROL A GROUP WHEN THERE'S NOT SOMEONE LIKE WATCHING OVER THEIR SHOULDER.

AND IT TEACHES THEM A LOT ABOUT THAT KIND OF THING.

DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? I HAVE A QUESTION.

YES. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE GROUP FACILITATION AND LEADERSHIP STRATEGIES THAT YOU'VE LEARNED THAT YOU FEEL ARE THE MOST HAVE BEEN MOST EFFECTIVE? I'M ONE OF THE STRONGEST ONES IS PROBABLY.

YOU NEED TO GET PEOPLE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT YOURSELF.

BECAUSE IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, A LOT OF THE SEVENTH GRADERS ARE REALLY NERVOUS AND THEY'RE LIKE, WOW, THIS IS A HUGE SCHOOL.

WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITH MYSELF? SO I HAD TO LEARN TO REALLY PUT MYSELF OUT THERE BECAUSE THEY'RE GOING TO TAKE THE ENERGY THAT I GIVE THEM.

SO IF I'M LIKE.

SO WE'RE GOING TO DO THIS AND THEN THIS.

THEN THEY'RE JUST GOING TO DO THE SAME THING.

SO I HAD TO LEARN HOW TO GET OUT OF MY SHELL A LITTLE BIT.

IT ALSO HELPS LEADERS THEMSELVES FOR THE BIG ORIENTATION AND TEACHING SEVENTH GRADERS.

IT TEACHES THEM HOW TO BE A BIG ROLE MODEL, ALL OF THAT AND LIKE TO LEARN HOW TO LIKE NOT CARE ABOUT BEING COOL BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT BEING COOL IN FRONT OF THESE SEVENTH GRADERS. YOU'RE BEING A HILARIOUS MESS.

BUT PUT TOGETHER. BUT, YOU KNOW, THE SEVENTH GRADERS THINK YOU'RE LIKE A TEACHER.

YEAH. IT ALSO PROVIDES A LOT OF PUBLIC SPEAKING SINCE YOU HAVE 9 TO 12 STUDENTS.

BUT IT'S ALSO NICE TO HAVE YOU ALSO GET TO MEET ANOTHER WEB LEADER IN THE PROCESS.

SO BEING ABLE TO BE AROUND ALL THE SEVENTH GRADERS ALSO MAKING A NEW FRIEND AT THE SAME TIME.

IT'S PRETTY AWESOME TO BE A WEB LEADER.

GOT IT. IT SEEMS LIKE SUCH A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY.

AND I REMEMBER LIKE, THE PENCIL GAME I COULD NEVER GET.

I CAN NEVER WIN.

BUT I ALWAYS WANTED TO, EVEN AS A WEB LEADER, I ALWAYS FORGOT HOW TO DO IT SO I WOULD HAVE MY PARTNER DO IT FOR ME.

BUT I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WAS SUCH A FUN TIME.

AND HONESTLY, THIS REMINDS ME OF SOMETHING WE DO NOW IN HIGH SCHOOL AT MEADOW HIGH, WHERE IT'S LIKE LEADERS AND UPPERCLASSMEN, LIKE SOPHOMORES, LIKE TAKE THE INCOMING FRESHMEN AND JUST GIVE THEM AN ORIENTATION ON LIKE WHAT HIGH SCHOOL IS LIKE.

SO I THINK IT'S REALLY INTERESTING TO GET THAT SAME PROCESS IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL.

WE ALSO GET IN THE HIGH SCHOOL, SO I THINK THAT'S REALLY COOL AND GOOD JOB, GUYS, BECAUSE WHEN I WAS A WEB LEADER, I COULD NOT SPEAK IN FRONT OF A CROWD AT ALL.

GOOD JOB. AND IT ALSO LOOKS LIKE SOME OF YOU WILL BECOME STUDENT ADVISORS FOR THE BOARD.

FIRST, I JUST WANTED TO GIVE YOU A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF OUR SCHOOL.

WE HAVE 735 STUDENTS IN TWO GRADES.

WE HAVE 125 STUDENTS IN SPECIAL EDUCATION IN THREE DIFFERENT PROGRAMS THIS YEAR, 140 STUDENTS IN OUR MULTILINGUAL LEARNER PROGRAM.

50% OF OUR STUDENTS QUALIFY FOR MEAL BENEFITS, AND OUR STUDENTS SPEAK 17 DIFFERENT LANGUAGES.

SO WE HAVE A VERY DIVERSE STUDENT BODY.

OUR DEMOGRAPHICS AT OUR SCHOOL.

WE HAVE A VERY DIVERSE STUDENT BODY AND AN INCREASINGLY DIVERSE STAFF.

THE NUMBERS REPRESENT THE PERCENTAGES OF STAFF IN THOSE DIFFERENT ETHNIC RACIAL GROUPS AND WE HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO HIRE FOUR STAFF IN THE PAST FEW YEARS WHO ARE BILINGUAL IN SPANISH, WHICH IS A FAST GROWING COMPONENT OF OUR STUDENT BODY, BOTH OUR MULTI LANGUAGE LEARNERS AND OUR OUR LATINO STUDENTS.

SO OUR MISSION IS TO ADVOCATE FOR EACH AND EVERY STUDENT BY PROVIDING LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS THAT EMBRACE THEIR CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC DIVERSITY AS AN ASSET THAT WILL PREPARE THEM FOR SUCCESS AS LIFELONG LEARNERS AND RESPONSIBLE WORLD CITIZENS.

WE HAVE THREE CORE VALUES AT MEADOWDALE MIDDLE SCHOOL COMMUNITY, GROWTH AND PURPOSE.

WE'RE GOING TO BRIEFLY MENTION OUR FIRST TWO GOALS, WHICH ARE ACADEMIC GOALS IN READING AND MATH.

AS A QUICK DISCLAIMER, I WILL SAY THAT WHEN I HAD TO TURN THIS PRESENTATION IN, WE DID NOT HAVE SOME OF OUR BASELINE DATA FROM FALL DIAGNOSTICS AND SURVEYS THAT WE ADMINISTERED DURING SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER.

SO IF YOU'RE WONDERING WHERE THOSE NUMBERS ARE, I HAVE SOME OF THEM.

BUT OUR READING GOAL IS GOING TO BE FOCUSED ON GROWTH IN READING FOR OUR STUDENTS USING I READY.

OUR GOAL THIS YEAR IS AT 75% OF OUR STUDENTS WILL MEET THEIR ANNUAL TYPICAL GROWTH GOALS.

SO WHAT THAT SAYS IS THAT BASED ON WHERE THEY START IN SEPTEMBER, HOW MUCH GROWTH COULD YOU EXPECT A STUDENT TO HAVE OVER THE COURSE OF A TYPICAL SCHOOL YEAR? AND WE'RE ALSO WE ALSO HAVE SEPARATE GOALS FOR OUR STUDENTS IN OUR MULTILINGUAL LEARNER PROGRAM AND FOR OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE HISPANIC OR LATINAS THEY HAVE THEIR THEIR DATA HAS BEEN LAGGING, UNFORTUNATELY, BEHIND THEIR PEERS.

AND SO WE'VE SET SEPARATE GOALS FOR THEM IN THE ACTUAL DOCUMENT.

THERE'S ALSO SOMETHING MENTIONING A STRETCH GOAL.

AND A STRETCH GOAL WOULD BE IF YOU HAVE A STUDENT WHO'S MORE THAN ONE YEAR BEHIND THEIR GRADE LEVEL, HOW MUCH THEY WOULD HAVE TO GROW IN ORDER TO CLOSE THE GAP TO EVENTUALLY BE AT GRADE LEVEL WITHOUT GOING INTO A BUNCH OF DETAIL ON THAT.

AND OUR GOAL IS THAT 70% OF OUR STUDENTS MEET THEIR ANNUAL TYPICAL GROWTH GOAL ON THE SPRING.

THE GOAL WE'RE GOING TO FOCUS ON TONIGHT THOUGH IT RELATES A LITTLE BIT TO THE PRESENTATION THAT YOU JUST SAW, AND THAT IS CREATING A SENSE OF BELONGING IN OUR SCHOOL.

AND WE'RE GOING TO ATTEMPT TO MEASURE THAT USING SPECIFIC QUESTIONS ON THE PANORAMA SURVEY AND ALSO LOOKING AT OUR STUDENT ATTENDANCE DATA.

WE CHOSEN THIS GOAL BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT WITHOUT A SENSE OF BELONGING, A LOT OF STUDENTS ARE NOT GOING TO BE AS ACADEMICALLY SUCCESSFUL.

THEIR ATTENDANCE IS NOT GOING TO BE GENERALLY AS GOOD.

THEY'RE GOING TO BE LESS LIKELY TO ASK FOR HELP WHEN THEY NEED IT.

AND SO HISTORICALLY, SCHOOLS HAVE OFFERED EXTRACURRICULAR PROGRAMS LIKE SPORTS CLUBS, MUSIC PROGRAMS, THINGS THAT DO INCREASE STUDENTS SENSE OF BELONGING BUT ARE VOLUNTARY AND THEIR AND SO, YOU KNOW, STUDENTS WHO ALREADY TEND TO HAVE A HIGH SENSE OF BELONGING WILL JOIN THOSE PROGRAMS AND OTHERS MIGHT FEEL LIKE THERE'S NOTHING THERE FOR THEM.

AND SO OUR GOAL IS TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERY STUDENT BELONGS TO SOMETHING AT OUR SCHOOL BESIDES JUST MEADOWDALE MIDDLE SCHOOL.

SO HOW CAN WE DO THAT? THE FIRST ONE. SOME OF YOU MIGHT REMEMBER FROM THREE YEARS AGO WHEN WE LAUNCHED OUR HOUSE PROGRAM, WHICH MEANT THAT AS SOON AS EVERY STUDENT WALKED IN THE DOOR, THEY BELONG TO ONE OF FIVE HOUSES. THEY'RE JUST COLORED PURPLE, RED, YELLOW, AND THEY COMPETE FOR FUN DURING ASSEMBLIES, BUT ALSO SOMETIMES IN FUNDRAISERS.

WE EVEN AT QUARTERLY CHECK ATTENDANCE AND WE AWARD HOUSE POINTS BASED UPON THAT.

STUDENTS ARE RANDOMLY IN THESE HOUSES BASED UPON THE HOMEROOM TEACHER THEY'RE ASSIGNED AND AND THE WINNING HOUSE HAS A HOUSE PARTY IN THE SPRING.

WE HAD OUR FIRST ONE LAST SPRING BECAUSE THE PANDEMIC INTERRUPTED OUR LAUNCH YEAR OF THIS.

BUT IT MUST HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL BECAUSE I HAD KIDS EMAILING ME OVER THE SUMMER REQUESTING A PARTICULAR HOUSE, WHICH HAS NEVER HAPPENED.

THESE ARE SOME PICTURES OF KIDS REPRESENTING THEIR HOUSES AT ASSEMBLIES.

STAFF MEMBERS PARTICIPATE, AND IT'S A LOT OF FUN.

BUT WEBB IS ANOTHER STRATEGY THAT WE'RE USING TO INCREASE BELONGING AT MEADOWDALE MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND IT'S A NATIONALLY PROVEN PROGRAM.

AND WE WERE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO EARN A GRANT FROM THE FOUNDATION FOR EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT.

SO A BIG THANK YOU TO THE FOUNDATION FOR THAT GRANT, WHICH ENABLED US TO GET THAT THAT CURRICULUM.

AND WE PARTNERED WITH COLLEGE PLACE IN IMPLEMENTING IT AND IN TRAINING, RECEIVING STAFF TRAINING FOR IT.

CHARACTER STRONG IS AN ONLINE COLLECTION OF SHORT LESSONS THAT I'VE SEEN IMPLEMENTED TO VERY POSITIVE EFFECT IN ANOTHER DISTRICT, AND IT HAS DIFFERENT LESSONS AT EACH GRADE

LEVEL. THIS YEAR WE PLAN ON USING 18 OF THOSE LESSONS IN OUR HOME ROOM PERIODS TO REALLY BUILD DIFFERENT SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING SKILLS.

AND THOSE LESSONS ARE ALIGNED TO THE CASTLE STRATEGIES, THE FIVE CASTLE STRATEGIES, CASTLE CASTLE, WHICH IS THE CENTER FOR ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING OUT OF CHICAGO. AND THESE LESSONS ARE DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS AT GRADE LEVEL.

AND THAT'S A REAL QUESTION ABOUT THAT REALLY HELPS KIDS UNDERSTAND WHERE THEY ARE, WHERE THEY BELONG.

AND OUR DATA SHOWS THAT WE ARE AT OR ABOVE, JUST ABOVE THE DISTRICT AVERAGE, BUT WE FEEL THAT WE COULD DO BETTER.

AND ANOTHER WAY WE'RE GOING TO MONITOR FOR GOAL NUMBER THREE IS THERE'S ANOTHER WHOLE BANK OF QUESTIONS ABOUT STUDENT COMPETENCY, BECAUSE CHARACTER STRONG ALSO TEACHES KIDS ABOUT MANAGING THEIR TIME, BEING AWARE IN A SOCIAL SETTING OF HOW OTHERS ARE PERCEIVING THEM.

AND THEN JUST THE ITEMS MENTIONED MENTIONED THERE AND THERE'S A WHOLE BANK OF QUESTIONS ON THE PANORAMA SURVEY THAT THAT ADDRESS THOSE SIX QUALITIES.

AND WHAT HAPPENED? IT FREES UP.

THERE WE GO. AND THE LAST IS WE'RE GOING TO MONITOR STUDENT ATTENDANCE DATA.

AND GOOD ATTENDANCE IN OUR HOME ROOM DATABASE IS CONSIDERED TO BE 90% ATTENDANCE.

AND LAST YEAR, ONLY 65% OF OUR STUDENTS ACHIEVE THAT 90% THRESHOLD AND WHICH WAS BY FAR THE LOWEST WE'VE EVER HAD.

BUT IT WAS THE WHOLE DISTRICT HAD ISSUES WITH ATTENDANCE LAST YEAR FOR REASONS WE DON'T HAVE TO GO BACK INTO.

CURRENTLY WE'RE AT 72%, SO WE'RE STILL NOT BACK TO WHERE WE WERE PRE-PANDEMIC.

OUR GOAL IS GET BACK TO 80% OR HIGHER BY THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR AND WEEKLY.

WE HAVE AN ATTENDANCE TEAM MEETING, MONITORING ATTENDANCE AND A STUDENT ENGAGEMENT TEAM MEETING WHERE WE CRAFT INTERVENTIONS FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE REALLY HAVING CHRONIC ATTENDANCE ISSUES. SO JUST A QUICK UPDATE ON OUR PROGRESS.

WE DID, AS THE KIDS MENTIONED, HAVE OUR FIRST WEB ACTIVITY.

THIS LAST WEEK.

IT WAS FOCUS WAS CHECKING IN ON SEVENTH GRADERS HOW THE START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR GOING AND JUST GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER BETTER.

OUR FIRST HOUSE ASSEMBLY, WE HAD THE THIRD WEEK OF SCHOOL.

IT WAS A BLAST GREEN HOUSE ONE.

BUT CURRENTLY BLUE HOUSE IS WINNING IN THE VIKING RUN FUNDRAISER, WHICH IS A VERY LARGE EVENT AND STUDENTS ARE RESPONDING TO OUR ATTENDANCE OUTREACH FROM THE MIDDLE OF SEPTEMBER TO NOW.

ATTENDANCE IS UP 5% AND SO WE'RE HOPING TO KEEP BUILDING ON THAT.

I REALIZE WE HAD THE PANDEMIC IN THE MIDDLE, BUT WAS THERE IS THERE ANY WAY THAT YOU'VE SEEN THAT IT'S IMPROVED ATTENDANCE? IT'S HARD FOR ME TO COMMENT ON ITS IMPACT ON ATTENDANCE JUST BECAUSE WE LAUNCHED IT IN 2019, 2020, AND SO IN FEBRUARY, IN MARCH, THAT ALL WENT AWAY. AND THEN WE'VE HAD TWO STRANGE YEARS.

THE IMPACT, I WOULD SAY, IS WHERE WE ASK KIDS WHERE YOUR HOUSE COLORS ARE.

WE'RE GOING TO HAVE AN ASSEMBLY.

IT'S PRETTY HARD TO FIND A KID WHO THEY MIGHT COME TO SCHOOL AT FIRST AND NOT BE SURE.

IS EVERYBODY ACTUALLY GOING TO DO THIS OR NOT? BUT THEN BY THE TIME THE ASSEMBLY ROLLS ALONG, THEY'VE FOUND SOMETHING YELLOW TO PUT ON.

SO IT'S INTERESTING TO HEAR YOU TALK ABOUT ATTENDANCE BECAUSE WE JUST CAME FROM A STUDY SESSION WHERE WE WERE LOOKING AT DISTRICT WIDE ATTENDANCE DATA, AND IT IS OF CONCERN ACROSS THE DISTRICT. SO WE ARE HOPING THAT ALL OF THE DISTRICT AND SCHOOL STAFF WILL WORK ON FIGURING OUT HOW TO ENCOURAGE PARENTS AND KIDS TO BE ATTENDING MORE.

REGARDLESS, THESE PUBLIC COMMENTS BEING MADE TIME AND AGAIN ARE HARMFUL TO OUR LGBTQIA STUDENTS AND COLLEAGUES.

THE FIRST PURPOSE OF OUR LETTER IS TO STATE CLEARLY THAT MEADOW DALE MIDDLE SCHOOL SUPPORTS OUR TRANSGENDER AND GENDER DIVERSE STUDENTS.

OUR EDUCATORS FOLLOW THE SCHOOL BOARD POLICY 3211 SUPPORTING GENDER INCLUSIVE SCHOOLS AND UNDERSTAND THE LEGAL AND ETHICAL OBLIGATIONS WE HAVE TO CREATE A SAFE AND INCLUSIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL STUDENTS, INCLUDING TRANSGENDER AND GENDER DIVERSE STUDENTS.

THE GROUP REPEATEDLY MAKING TRANSPHOBIC COMMENTS AT BOARD MEETINGS DOES NOT SPEAK FOR US NOR REFLECT OUR SCHOOL'S VIEWPOINT IN ANY WAY.

THE OTHER PURPOSE IS TO SECOND THE REQUEST OF THE EACH LETTER FOR THE BOARD TO CONSULT WITH THEIR LEGAL COUNSEL REGARDING IF AND WHEN THESE HARMFUL AND HATEFUL COMMENTS CAN BE STOPPED. AT THE VERY LEAST, WE EXPECT PROACTIVE AND CLEAR SUPPORT FROM THE BOARD FOR OUR LGBTQIA STUDENTS AND COLLEAGUES AT THESE MEETINGS.

UNFORTUNATELY, THERE ARE SOME ADULTS WHO HAVE NEVER MET OR INTERACTED WITH GAY OR GAY KIDS, AND THEY THINK THEY KNOW

THEY NEED SEPARATION, ISOLATION, DENIAL OF WHO THEY ARE.

THESE ADULTS EVEN TELL LIES ABOUT THEIR MEDICAL NEEDS, PROPOSING THAT THERE'S REALLY SOMETHING WRONG WITH THESE KIDS.

THEY'RE BROKEN, THEY'RE SINFUL, OR THEY SHOULD BE EXCLUDED.

THEY SHOULD NOT BE IN OUR SCHOOLS, NOT IN OUR HOMES.

NOT IN OUR CHURCHES.

AS A PASTOR, AS A PARENT AND A GRANDPARENT, I'M HERE TO SAY LOUDLY THAT THESE KIDS ARE NOT OTHER.

THEY ARE NOT DIFFERENT.

THEY ARE NOT DEVIANT.

BUT THEY ARE CHILDREN OF GOD.

AND THEY ARE OUR CHILDREN.

IT WILL TAKE A LOT OF HARD WORK.

IT WILL TAKE A LOT OF SPEAKING UP REGULARLY TO BLOCK OUT THE MYTHS THAT THESE FEARFUL PEOPLE TELL.

I CAN ONLY SPEAK FOR MYSELF.

BUT I KNOW SOME OF THE OTHER MAINLINE PASTORS IN THIS DISTRICT AND CHURCHES IN THIS DISTRICT.

AND KNOW THAT THEY ARE WELCOMING, INCLUSIVE, HUMBLE ABOUT STRANGERS, THOSE WHO ARE DIFFERENT.

SOME HAVE FLAGS OUTSIDE THEIR BUILDINGS.

SOME HAVE SIGNS.

ALL HAVE STUDIED AND UNDERSTAND THAT GOD CREATED A GREAT DIVERSITY OF PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT COLORS, DIFFERENT EYES, DIFFERENT HAIRSTYLES, DIFFERENT LANGUAGES. AND GOD HAS BLESSED THIS CREATION, CALLING IT GOOD AND GIVING EACH PERSON CREATED WORTH, VALUE AND DIGNITY.

SIMPLY PUT, THOSE OF US WHO LOVE AND RESPECT THE DIFFERENCES IN PEOPLE, THOSE OF US WHO CARE ABOUT GAY, LESBIAN AND TRANS PEOPLE, CHILDREN, YOUTH AND ADULTS HAVE TO BE LOUDER AND MORE DETERMINED THAN THE PEOPLE WHO DENY THEM THEIR RIGHTS AND THEIR FREEDOMS TO BE WHO THEY ARE.

SO WHETHER IT'S PLAYING SPORTS OR USING BATHROOMS OR SCHOOL LUNCHES WITH FRIENDS OR SITTING NEXT TO ME, THEY ARE NOT THEM, BUT THEY ARE MY CHILDREN.

THEY'RE MY SISTERS.

MY BROTHER'S A CHILD OF GOD, JUST LIKE ME.

AS OTHERS HAVE SAID, JUSTICE IS LOVE MADE PUBLIC AND WE WANT THESE CHILDREN TO THRIVE.

THEY SHOULD KNOW HOW TO BE STRONG EVERY DAY.

THEY SHOULD LEARN HOW TO BE STRONGER PHYSICALLY.

PSYCHOLOGICALLY, INTELLECTUALLY AND FINANCIALLY.

THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF YOUR SCHOOL IS TO GET YOU READY TO MAKE MONEY WHEN YOU GET OUT OF SCHOOL.

I DON'T SEE THAT BEING TAUGHT.

THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND AT THIS POINT THE IMPORTANCE OF WEALTH AND THE FREEDOM THAT WEALTH BRINGS THEM.

IF YOU START GOING BACKWARDS IN YOUR EDUCATION PROCESS, MAYBE YOUR TEST SCORES WILL START GOING UP.

THE PROCESSES THAT WERE 20 YEARS AGO, 30 YEARS AGO GOT MUCH BETTER TEST SCORES THAN YOU DO NOW.

THIS IS THE TRUE HISTORY OF TRANSGENDER PEOPLE AND THE WAYS IN WHICH WE WERE SEEN AS BOTH ANGELS AND AS DEMONS THROUGHOUT HISTORY IN THE SETTLEMENTS OF THE ORIGINAL INHABITANTS OF THIS LAND SINCE TIME IMMEMORIAL.

THERE WAS A GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO, BECAUSE OF THEIR UNIQUE GENDER EXPRESSION, WERE HELD IN GREAT ESTEEM, BOTH CULTURALLY AND SPIRITUALLY, TO OUR FIRST PEOPLES.

WE NOW KNOW THEM AS TWO SPIRITS.

THIS PERSPECTIVE IS NOT UNIQUE TO OUR FIRST NATIONS EITHER.

IN ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIA, PRIESTESSES OF THE GODDESS ISHTAR, LATER KNOWN AS GAIA MOTHER EARTH, SANG OF HER GODDESSES ABILITY TO CHANGE MEN INTO WOMEN AND WOMEN INTO MEN. AND THE FIRST KNOWN POEM IN HUMAN HISTORY SPEAKS OF THIS GREEK AND ROMAN MEDICAL TEXTS ASSERTED THAT THEIR NOTION OF GENDER WAS FLUID AND WAS ABLE TO BE CHANGED BEFORE OR AFTER BIRTH.

EIGHT DIFFERENT SEX CATEGORIES EXIST.

THE TERM SERIOUS AND ALIENATED ADAM TRANSLATES TO ONE WHO IS BORN AS ONE GENDER, BUT THROUGH HUMAN INTERVENTION BECOMES LIKE ANOTHER.

THE SPANISH CONQUISTADOR VASCO NUNEZ DE BARBOSA ENCOUNTERED INDIGENOUS THIRD GENDER PEOPLES IN 1513, CALLING THEM AN ABOMINATION AGAINST DIVINE CREATION.

BUT THEY THESE SCHOOLS, FOR EXAMPLE, AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LIKE OAK HEIGHTS, ALSO USE OUR EDMONDS TEMPLATE BECAUSE IT'S MUCH MORE USER FRIENDLY WITH STAFF AND FAMILIES.

AND SO THE GOALS MAY BE A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT THAN THE GOALS THAT WE HAVE BECAUSE OCI REQUIRES THESE SCHOOLS TO WRITE THE GOALS IN CERTAIN VERY SPECIFIC WAYS AND THEY HAVE OCI COACHES THAT ACTUALLY SUPPORT OUR SCHOOL LEADERS AND STAFF TO MAKE SURE THAT HAPPENS.

AND SO, FOR EXAMPLE, OAK HEIGHTS HAS DIFFERENT KINDS OF GOALS, BUT THE PRINCIPAL AND STAFF FELT VERY STRONGLY THAT THEY REALLY WANTED A READING MATH AND A BELONGING GOAL THAT'S ALIGNED TO OUR STRATEGIC PLAN.

SO YOU'LL SEE SOME DIFFERENCES AND VARIOUS NUANCES, BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY.

FOR EXAMPLE, MANY SCHOOLS LAST YEAR ONLY STATED 2 TO 3% INCREASE IN SOME KIND OF ACHIEVEMENT USING SVA OR ALREADY DATA, FOR EXAMPLE.

BUT LOOKING AT CURRENT DATA, THEY REALIZED THAT THEY MADE 5% OR MORE GROWTH.

SO RATHER THAN KEEPING THE 2 TO 3%, THEY'VE NOW SHIFTED TO 5 TO 7 OR 5 TO 10%.

SO THE NEW DATA INFORMS HOW THEY'RE GOING TO SHIFT THEIR PERCENTAGES OF GROWTH ON A YEAR TO YEAR BASIS.

SO BY SPRING 2024, THEY HAVE AN ACCURATE SENSE OF HOW THE PROJECTIONS WILL GO.

AND FOR THE NEXT THREE YEARS, STARTING FROM SPRING 2024, THEY'LL USE CURRENT DATA TO BE ABLE TO SAY, NOW THIS IS OUR BASELINE, WHICH IS SPRING 2024, AND THEN THREE YEARS OUT WE WILL DETERMINE HOW MUCH GROWTH EACH THE SCHOOL WILL MAKE DEPENDENT ON WHAT KIND OF DATA SOURCE THAT THEY USE.

YESTERDAY THERE WAS A SCHOOL SHOOTING AT ST LOUIS HIGH SCHOOL IN CHICAGO AND ON SOCIAL MEDIA.

THERE WAS A STUDENT FROM MY SCHOOL THAT THREATENED TO SHOOT SOMEBODY FOR A DIFFERENT SCHOOL.

AND WE HAVE BEEN SOME OF MY FRIENDS AND I KIND OF BEEN LIKE REALLY WORRIED ABOUT OUR SAFETY AT SCHOOL AND IT JUST KIND OF BEEN HARD TO KIND OF FEEL SAFE AND SECURE BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT SCHOOL IS SUPPOSED TO BE.

BUT IT'S HONESTLY JUST REALLY HARD.

AND THERE'S ALSO JUST BEEN AN INCREASE OF LOTS OF DRUGS IN OUR SCHOOL THAT WE I SEE WITH ALL MY PEERS AROUND ME THAT THEY HAVE.

YOU KNOW, YOU NEVER KNOW IF YOU RE GONNA WALK INTO THE BATHROOM AND THERE'S GONNA BE LIKE GRAFFITI ON THE WALLS, WHICH ISN'T DOESN'T FOSTER THAT SAFE OF A ENVIRONMENT.

AND THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF, UM, INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS THAT.

HAVE BEEN TURNING PRETTY TOXIC WITHIN MY SCHOOL, AND IT ALSO HAS BEEN IMPACTING PEOPLE'S FEELINGS OF SAFETY.

AND SO I THINK I WOULD BE I WOULD BE INTERESTED AS, UH, SAME WITH SAFETY AND HEARING MORE ABOUT LIKE WHAT WE'RE DOING AS A DISTRICT TO PROMOTE STUDENT SAFETY AND, UM, PROTECTING, LIKE SHE SAID, OUR DIVERSITY AND OUR FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION, BUT ALSO MAKING IT CLEAR THAT, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE TO BE, UH, RESPONSIBLE WITH THESE, UM, DECISIONS THAT WE'RE MAKING.

I PERSONALLY WAS NOT AT SCHOOL AT THE TIME, BUT I WAS TRYING TO GET BACK IN AND THE DOORS WERE LOCKED, BUT I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON BECAUSE IT WASN'T LIKE ANNOUNCED PUBLICLY. THEY TRIED TO KEEP IT LIKE UNDER WRAPS SO NOTHING WOULD HAPPEN.

BUT WHAT I HEARD WAS THAT THERE WERE KIDS STILL WALKING AROUND THE SCHOOL WHILE THE POLICE WERE COMING IN TO CONFISCATE THE WEAPON AND TAKE THE STUDENT WHO BROUGHT THE WEAPON INTO SCHOOL AND ALSO THE CLASSROOMS NEARBY.

I THINK THERE WERE A COUPLE OF ASL CLASSROOMS. THEY WERE NOT NOTIFIED THAT SOMETHING WAS HAPPENING AND THAT THERE WERE POLICE IN THE SCHOOL.

AND PERSONALLY, MY SISTER WAS WALKING AROUND THE SCHOOL.

SHE WAS LIKE, YEAH, I WAS IN THE BATHROOM WHEN THIS HAPPENED.

I'M LIKE, SO YOU WEREN'T IN CLASS.

YOU WEREN'T THE DOORS WEREN'T CLOSED.

AND YEAH, THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED TO HER.

LIKE I WAS SCARED WHEN I HEARD, BUT I'M LIKE, WAIT, THIS HAPPENED AND THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED TO EDMONTON THE WAY IT HAPPENED LAST YEAR TOO, IN THE SPRING, I THINK. AND IT'S JUST LIKE THIS WHOLE GUN VIOLENCE THING HAS BECOME LIKE A TREND.

IT'S NOT A GOOD TREND, BUT WE CAN SEE IT.

IT'S BEEN HAPPENING AND IT'S CONTINUALLY HAPPENING IN OUR DISTRICT AND IN THE COUNTRY.

HONESTLY, WHEN WE HAVE LOCKDOWNS, WE DON'T GET NOTIFIED, WE DON'T GET INFO BACK AND BE IN CLASS WITH ALL MY PEERS.

IT WAS A LITTLE BIT CONCERNING KNOWING THAT WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY INFORMATION COMING IN ON WHAT WAS GOING ON, AND I UNDERSTAND THAT IN THAT MOMENT YOU WANT TO KEEP THE STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOM CALM AND COLLECTED SO THEY DON'T FREAK OUT AND MAKE CALLS, YOU KNOW, IF SOMETHING IS ACTUALLY GOING ON.

SO THEY'RE NOT LIKE ALERTING AN INTRUDER.

BUT EVEN AFTER THE SITUATION, EVEN DAYS AFTER STUDENTS AND STAFF I MEAN, STUDENTS AND PARENTS ARE STILL CONFUSED ON WHAT HAPPENED.

SO I JUST WANT TO MAKE IT LIKE A LITTLE BIT MORE CLEAR THAT STUDENTS AREN'T GETTING THAT INFORMATION THAT THEY WANT.

THEY WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING AND WHAT THE PROCESS IS ON AFTER THE FACT THAT LIKE WE WENT INTO LOCKDOWN.

SO I'M TALKING TO A LOT OF STUDENTS AND THEY THE MOST THE BIGGEST CONCERN I HEAR IS LIKE, WHY IS NO INFORMATION BEING RELIED AFTER THE FACT OF LOCKDOWN? LIKE WHAT IS HAPPENING AFTER THE LOCKDOWN? WE UNDERSTAND INFORMATION THAT MIGHT NOT BE GOING OUT DURING THE MOMENT, BUT LIKE THE DAYS FOLLOWING AFTER, THERE'S NO FOLLOWING UP ON WHAT HAPPENED OR WHAT MEASURES THEY TOOK TOWARDS THE STUDENTS.

AND EVEN PARENTS ARE LIKE IN THE MOMENT CONTACTING STUDENTS, ASKING THEM IF THEY KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON BECAUSE.

STUDENT I MEAN, PARENTS ARE JUST BEING NOTIFIED THAT THERE IS A LOCKDOWN WHICH CONCERNS LIKE FOR THEIR SAFETY, FOR THEIR STUDENTS, BUT LIKE STUDENTS THEMSELVES DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON, WHICH MAKES SENSE WHY YOU WOULDN'T WANT TO FREAK OUT THE STUDENTS IN THE CLASS.

BUT LIKE THE FACT THAT WE DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED AND PEOPLE STILL ASK US CONCERNS ME BECAUSE I WANT TO BE MADE AWARE OF WHAT'S GOING ON.

I WANT TO BE MADE AWARE OF WHAT THE ISSUES ARE.

AND I FEEL LIKE WE COULD WORK BETTER AS A DISTRICT ON COMMUNICATING THOSE ISSUES AFTER THAT HAPPENS AND REPLYING TO LIKE THAT, NOT HAVING POLICE ON CAMPUS.

I DO AGREE THAT POLICE SERVED AS A SAFETY MEASURE, BUT I WORKED REALLY HARD WITH LIKE BSU AT MY SCHOOL AT MEADOWDALE TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS SAFETY PROTOCOLS IN IMPLEMENTED INTO THE SCHOOL, BUT THAT POLICE OFFICERS WERE REMOVED BECAUSE OF THE DANGERS OF MAYBE RACIAL PROFILING THAT THEY MADE TOWARDS STUDENTS, WHICH MAKES SENSE WHY STUDENTS WOULD WANT TO FEEL A CONCERN OF POLICE BEING ON CAMPUS, ESPECIALLY AFTER A LOT OF EVENTS THAT OCCURRED IN THE PAST FEW YEARS WITH POLICE VIOLENCE. AND PERSONALLY, I GET NERVOUS WHEN POLICE ARE AROUND IN A SCHOOL SETTING BECAUSE I THINK THAT IT'S IT'S AFFECTING MY WAY OF LEARNING BECAUSE I'M JUST NERVOUS.

LIKE, THAT'S JUST AS A PERSON OF COLOR.

I GET NERVOUS WHEN POLICE ARE AROUND AND HAVING THEM TAKEN AWAY OFF OF CAMPUS.

I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE'S A HIGHER RISK OF SAFETY CONCERN, BUT THERE'S ALSO A BETTER INFLUENCE.

AND SO I CAN GET AN EDUCATION WITHOUT HAVING TO FEEL PRESSURED OR HAVING TO FEEL LIKE I HAVE TO BE A STRAIGHT STUDENT, EVEN THOUGH I'M GOING TO JUST GET MY EDUCATION, NOT HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT IF A IF THE POLICE OFFICER ON CAMPUS IS JUST GOING TO LOOK AT ME DIFFERENTLY BECAUSE I AM A STUDENT OF COLOR.

SO I DO UNDERSTAND THE FACT THAT POLICE OFFICERS SERVED AS A SAFETY MEASURE.

BUT FOR ME PERSONALLY, AS A STUDENT OF COLOR, IT'S A BETTER SAFETY MEASURE TO HAVE THEM OFF CAMPUS BECAUSE IT MAKES ME LESS NERVOUS AND I FEEL MORE INCLINED TO GO TO CLASS AND I FEEL MORE INCLINED TO SHOW UP AND I FEEL MORE INCLINED TO NOT BE SO NERVOUS TO ACCIDENTALLY PULL IN TO LATE TO SCHOOL AND GET STOPPED BY THE POLICE OFFICERS ASKING ME WHERE I WAS GOING, WHERE I'M COMING FROM JUST BECAUSE I AM A STUDENT OF COLOR.

AND REPLYING TO SOMEBODY'S CONCERN.

ON IF MEADOWDALE IS NOT A STRONG PROGRAM AS WE WERE 20 OR 30 YEARS AGO, MEADOWDALE ISN'T THE SAME AS WE WERE 20 TO 30 YEARS AGO.

MY BROTHER, WHO ATTENDED MEADOWDALE A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, IT'S MUCH DIFFERENT JUST SEVEN YEARS AGO.

MEADOWDALE HAS GROWN IN DIVERSITY AND EQUITY.

AS PRESIDENT OF LSU, I NOTICED THAT OUR CLUB IS GROWING DRASTICALLY AND BACK THEN WE HAD NO NOBODY OUTREACHING TO LATINO STUDENTS, ASKING THEM, WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL? AND SO I'M GLAD THAT MEADOWDALE IS WHERE IT'S AT NOW, FOCUSING ON NOT ONLY PROBLEMS OF EDUCATION OR WHAT OUR GPA IS OR WHAT OUR GRADE IS THIS DAY OR THAT DAY, BUT FOCUSING ON OTHER THINGS SUCH AS, ARE YOU OKAY MENTALLY? AND THAT IN THAT BATHROOM THERE WAS GRAFFITI SAYING THAT THREATENING STUDENTS AND SAYING THAT THERE HAS I'M THREATENING YOU, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.

WE WERE ACTUALLY TOLD WHAT WAS SAID ON THAT BATHROOM.

BUT INSTEAD THEY TREATED IT AS IF IT WASN'T REALLY LIKE AN ACTUAL THING THAT WAS HAPPENING.

SO THEN MY CLASSMATES DIDN'T CARE, AND WE WERE SET IN A MINDSET THAT WE SHOULDN'T HAVE CARED ABOUT A THREAT THAT WAS ON OUR CAMPUS.

AND I AM AND HAVE BEEN VERY CONCERNED, BUT IT'S NOT TREATED AS A CONCERN.

I THINK WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE CELEBRATE THAT AND TELL OUR STUDENTS THAT THAT IS WHAT WE WANT THEM TO DO.

I MEAN, THERE IS A REASON POST 911, THE SLOGAN WAS SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING.

THE REALITY IS THAT THAT IS OUR BEST DEFENSES.

IF PEOPLE CAN SEE IT, LET PEOPLE KNOW, GET THE SITUATION FIXED.

IT'S NOT OUR ONLY DEFENSE, BUT IT'S PROBABLY THE MOST POWERFUL.

DR. SCHWAB HAD BEEN GIVING US AN UPDATE ON SOME OF THE SECURITY THINGS THAT WE'RE DOING, AND A LOT OF THEM ARE ALSO PREVENTATIVE TYPE THINGS, STUFF WHERE STUDENTS CAN GET MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORTS AND OTHER THINGS LIKE THAT TO MAKE THEM FEEL MORE INCLUDED IN SCHOOL AS A WAY OF MAKING THEM LESS LIKELY TO DO SOMETHING TO THEIR FELLOW STUDENTS.

YOU KNOW, NOTHING'S GOING TO BE PERFECT THAT WE DO.

THERE'S NOT A SPECIAL MAGIC WAND WE CAN WAVE.

ALL WE CAN DO IS KEEP, TRY AND STUFF.

AND IT'S WHY I'VE BEEN TRYING TO WORK WITH DR.

MINOR TO REALLY MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE SOME CONSISTENT THINGS WE'RE DOING ACROSS THE DISTRICT.

AND SHE'S BEEN REALLY GOOD ABOUT GIVING US UPDATES ON THESE THREATS AND WHAT THE DISTRICT HAS DONE WITH THEM.

AND I THINK THAT COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE DISTRICT AND THE BOARD IS VERY IMPORTANT.

SO AT LEAST WE CAN MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS AS WE'RE TRYING TO FIGURE THIS STUFF OUT.

SO I DO WANT TO THANK DR.

MINOR FOR BEING SO HELPFUL IN THAT RESPECT SO THAT WE ARE KEPT INFORMED.

MOVING ON FROM THAT, SOMEONE HAD MENTIONED A COUPLE OF THINGS ABOUT OUR CURRICULUM AND PREPPING STUDENTS FOR THE REAL WORLD.

I AM GOING TO SAY THAT I THINK EDUCATION IS VERY IMPORTANT, BUT AT NO POINT IN MY LIFE HAS ANYONE ASKED ME TO CALCULATE THE VOLUME OF A CONE OR IF THE THEMES IN LORD OF THE FLIES REPRESENT MALE WESTERN MASCULINITY AND HOW THAT CONFLICTS WITH EASTERN THOUGHT? THE REALITY IS WHAT THEY'VE ASKED ME TO DO IS INTERACT WITH PEOPLE WHO DON'T SHARE MY VIEWS, WHO I HAVE TO TALK TO, FIGURE OUT HOW TO WORK TOGETHER, AND THEN BE JUDGED ON HOW WELL WE WORK TOGETHER.

THAT IS AN IMPORTANT SKILL AND IT'S ARGUABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILL THAT WE GIVE OUR STUDENTS.

SOMEBODY PERSON WHO OWNS A BUSINESS TOLD ME ONCE THAT HE DIDN'T.

IT'S WHO HE MET IN COLLEGE.

YOU KNOW, IT'S IT'S THOSE RELATIONSHIPS THAT WE BUILD.

BUT I WILL SAY THAT THE ONE AREA THAT I HAVE ALWAYS SAID THAT SCHOOLS SHOULD DO A BETTER JOB IS PREPPING KIDS FOR FINANCIAL STUFF WHEN THEY GET OUT.

I DO THINK WE DO A POOR JOB OF LETTING KIDS KNOW KIND OF WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE AND HOW TO PREPARE FOR THEIR RETIREMENT EVEN THOUGH IT'S 50 YEARS AWAY.

LIKE YOU'VE GOT TO GET STARTED EARLY.

AND THEN I HAVE BEEN SPENDING THE LAST YEAR REALLY GETTING USED TO JUST BEING ON THE BOARD AND TAKING IN REPORTS AND WHATNOT.

SO I HAVEN'T HAD A CHANCE TO VISIT THE SCHOOLS THAT ARE IN MY DISTRICT.

EVEN THOUGH WE'RE AT LARGE, I THINK THAT I SHOULD HAVE A SPECIAL EYE ON THEM.

SO I AM WORKING WITH THE PRINCIPALS OF THOSE SCHOOLS TO GET A CHANCE TO GO TO ALL OF THEM.

BEFORE BREAK, I HAVE USED THE EMAIL SYSTEM THIS TIME TO TALK TO THOSE PRINCIPALS.

SO WE ARE SO I'M EXCITED TO GO IN THERE.

AND ONE OF THE ISSUES THAT I DID HIGHLIGHT WITH THEM WAS TELL ME IF YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'RE GETTING THE SUPPORT YOU NEED FOR STUDENT SAFETY.

IT'S SUCH AN IMPROVEMENT OVER THE VERY STRANGE SCHOOL.

THE OLD SPRUCE ELEMENTARY WAS AND IT'S A GREAT, GREAT SCHOOL, OPEN, OPEN AIR INSIDE, VERY BRIGHT, LOTS OF SUNLIGHT.

AND SO JUST EXCITING TO DEDICATE A NEW SCHOOL.

WE HAVE 35 SCHOOLS AND.

I'VE SAID MANY TIMES, IF YOU WANT TO UPDATE YOUR SCHOOLS ABOUT ONCE EVERY 50 YEARS MEANS WE HAVE TO BUILD A NEW SCHOOL EVERY YEAR AND A HALF, AND WE'RE NOT DOING IT THAT FAST, BUT WE'RE GETTING THERE ONE AT A TIME.

AND I JUST WE'VE GOT THIS INFORMATION, BUT I WANT YOU TO KNOW WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT FOR PREVENTATIVE MEASURES, PROTECTIVE MEASURES, MITIGATION MEASURES, RESPONSES TO MORE EMERGENCY SITUATIONS, POST EMERGENCY RECOVERY MEASURES, THAT TYPE OF THING.

THESE ARE WHAT WE ARE ACTIVELY RIGHT NOW DISCUSSING AT THE BOARD LEVEL AND WITH ALL THE STAFF.

AND SO I LOOK FORWARD.

OUR EMPLOYEE, WHICH IS OUR SUPERINTENDENT, WILL BE HELPING US THINK ABOUT WHAT OUR NEXT STEPS IN RELATION TO WHAT YOU'VE BEEN SHARING WITH US TONIGHT, BECAUSE I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT WE TAKE THESE SCHOOL AND FEELING OF BELONGING AND SAFETY, VERY IMPORTANT.

OH, MY GOSH. AT AND WHAT WAS FASCINATING TO ME AND JUST JUST THRILLED THAT SHOWCASING THE LIBRARY SYSTEM LIBRARIANS ARE TEACHERS OF COLOR FOUNDATION HOW WE ARE DOING ACTIVELY SEEKING TO INCREASE THE LEVEL OF DIVERSITY IN OUR STAFF AND THE SCHOOL BASED HEALTH CLINIC, WHICH IS THE FIRST ONE IN SNOHOMISH COUNTY.

AND THE INCREDIBLE HIGHLIGHTS THAT THE THINGS THAT WE ARE DOING IN EDMONDS HAS GIVEN US THE EYE OF THE GOVERNOR TO COME OUT AND GET THESE WONDERFUL UPDATES. AND SO I WAS REALLY THRILLED TO BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THAT.

AND THESE ARE THREE OF THINGS THAT THAT I'M VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT.

I HAD TO LOOK IT UP.

I ALSO GOT TO VISIT WITH THE GOVERNOR AND IN PARTICULAR I SAT IN ON THE TEACHERS OF COLOR FOUNDATION PRESENTATION. AND IF YOU'RE NOT FAMILIAR, THIS ORGANIZATION WAS FOUNDED BY A FORMER BOARD MEMBER, DIANA WHITE, WHO SERVED ON THE BOARD FOR EIGHT YEARS UNTIL 2019.

IN RESPONSE TO THE DIFFICULTY OUR DISTRICT HAS IN DIVERSIFYING OUR WORKFORCE.

AND SO CURRENTLY WE HAVE ABOUT 56% OF OUR STUDENTS ARE ASIAN, BLACK, LATINO AND OTHER STUDENTS OF COLOR, BUT ONLY 14% OF OUR TEACHERS ARE TEACHERS OF COLOR.

I AM VERY MUCH IN FAVOR OF DIVERSIFYING OUR WORKFORCE.

IF WE HAVE MORE TEACHERS OF COLOR IN THE SCHOOLS, THEY CAN UNIQUELY MOTIVATE STUDENTS BY SERVING AS ROLE MODELS, BUT ALSO THEY CAN BRING TO OUR SCHOOL TEAMS THE EXPERTISE NEEDED ABOUT THE STUDENT POPULATIONS WE SERVE.

AND I BELIEVE IN OUR STUDENTS HAVE TOLD US SO THAT HAVING MORE TEACHERS OF COLOR WILL GIVE THE DISTRICT A BETTER CHANCE OF CREATING CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE CLASSROOMS WITH IMPROVED FAMILY ENGAGEMENT.

AND WE KNOW AND I'M VERY INVESTED IN THIS, THAT FAMILY ENGAGEMENT LEADS TO BETTER ACADEMIC OUTCOMES FOR ALL STUDENTS.

THE FOUNDATION WORKS WITH PARA EDUCATORS AS DIRECTOR CHASE MENTIONED, WORKS WITH PEREZ AND OTHER STAFF IN OUR DISTRICT TO HELP THEM GET GET THROUGH HIGHER EDUCATION, GET THEIR TEACHING CERTIFICATION.

AND SO WHAT WE END UP WITH ARE VERY IMPRESSIVE PROFESSIONALS WHO HAVE A GREAT LOVE FOR OUR DISTRICT, THEIR HOME.

SO FAR THEY'VE GRADUATED EIGHT TEACHERS.

BUT IF YOU AND IF YOU THINK THAT'S A SMALL NUMBER, I LOOKED AT OUR RATES OF DIVERSIFICATION OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS. THAT'S 15% OF OUR IMPROVEMENT OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS.

SO IT'S NOT SMALL AND IT WORKS VERY MUCH.

AND SPECIFICALLY IN OUR STRATEGIC PLAN, SPECIFICALLY GOAL TWO, OBJECTIVE ONE.

RIGHT NOW, THE TEACHERS OF COLOR FOUNDATION NEEDS THE SCHOOL DISTRICT SUPPORT.

THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN DESIGNED TO BE A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE DISTRICT IN WHICH WE WOULD PROVIDE CERTAIN RESOURCES AND TEACHERS OF COLOR FOUNDATION WOULD PROVIDE OTHER CERTAIN RESOURCES. I THINK SOME OF THE DISTRICT SUPPORT HAS BEEN WITHDRAWN OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS FOR A VARIETY OF REASONS.

NOT ALL OF OUR ONE THING AND PARTLY ABOUT THE PANDEMIC AND PARTLY ABOUT BUDGET AND PERHAPS SOME OTHER THINGS.

BUT I THINK WE SHOULDN'T LOSE SIGHT OF WHERE WE GET THE MOST BANG FOR OUR BUCK.

AND I THINK THIS IS ONE OF THOSE PROGRAMS WHERE WE'RE ACTUALLY DOING WHAT WE SAY.

YOU KNOW, WE SAY A LOT OF STUFF UP HERE, AND THIS IS ONE OF THOSE PROGRAMS WHERE WE DO WHAT WE SAY.

SO IF WE REALLY CARE ABOUT STUDENTS FEELING LIKE THEY BELONG IN OUR CLASSROOMS, THAT THEY'RE CAPABLE OF SUCCEEDING IN SCHOOL AND IN LIFE, WE KNOW THEY NEED TO SEE PEOPLE LIKE THEMSELVES WHO HAVE SUCCEEDED.

THEY NEED TO SEE THAT IT'S POSSIBLE.

AND I'D LIKE TO MAKE THIS PITCH THAT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT SHOULD WORK TOGETHER WITH TEACHERS OF COLOR FOUNDATION AND FIGURE OUT HOW TO MEET THE NEEDS WE ALL HAVE IN HELPING THEIR SCHOLARS GET THROUGH THE COMPLEX PROCESS OF GETTING TEACHING CERTIFICATION AND BRINGING IT HOME.

AND AGAIN, THANK YOU TO THE VOTERS BECAUSE IT'S ONLY THROUGH THOSE BONDS AND LEVEES THAT WERE ABLE TO CREATE THESE REALLY SAFE AND STRUCTURALLY RELEVANT FACILITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS.

THE LAST THING I WANTED TO MENTION HAS TO DO WITH THE GOVERNOR'S VISIT.

SO I'M NOT GOING TO RECREATE WHAT DEBRA AND AND KAREN TALKED ABOUT.

BUT I ACTUALLY WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU THAT TIM GARGIULO, WHO IS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF WAS TO THE WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION, CALLED ME TODAY AND SAID THAT HE MONTHLY MEETS WITH GOVERNOR STAFF AND HE MET WITH THE GOVERNOR'S STAFF TODAY AND THAT THEY SAID THE GOVERNOR RAVED ABOUT THE EDMOND SCHOOL DISTRICT, THAT WE ARE SETTING AN EXAMPLE ACROSS THE STATE.

AND HE WAS SPECIFICALLY IN ESPECIALLY RAVING ABOUT THE DIGITAL LITERACY THAT WE ARE TEACHING THAT OUR LIBRARIANS ARE LEADING AND THROUGH OUR CONTENT TEACHERS AND OTHER TEACHERS.

I SEE ELIZABETH GOING, YES, ARE HELPING OUR STUDENTS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND HOW YOU TELL MISINFORMATION FROM TRUTH AND FACTS ON THE INTERNET, HOW TO EVALUATE IT, HOW TO USE IT, HOW TO RECOGNIZE WHEN YOU'RE ON A SWITCH AND BAIT AND SWITCH KIND OF THING, ALL OF THOSE KINDS OF THINGS.

AND SO THE GOVERNOR WAS REALLY EXCITED BECAUSE PROBABLY AT HIS LEVEL, HE SEES SO MUCH MISINFORMATION AND CONSPIRACY THEORIES THAT ARE AFFECTING HOW PEOPLE ARE MAKING DECISIONS INSTEAD OF KNOWING HOW TO GET THE INFORMATION THAT'S FACTUAL AND CORRECT SO THAT WHEN WE MAKE DECISIONS, THEY ARE MADE BASED ON APPROPRIATE INFORMATION.

SO WE ARE SEEN BY THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE AS DOING OUTSTANDING WORK.

SO I WANTED TO SHARE THAT.

SO WHAT DIRECTOR NOBLE IS ASKING IS THAT LAST YEAR WE HAD TALKED ABOUT AS A BOARD HAVING AN EQUITY TRAINING AND WE'VE HAD THE EQUITY TRAINING OR VERSIONS OF THE EQUITY TRAINING THAT HAVE BEEN STAFF WIDE IN THE DISTRICT SO THAT WE GET THE SAME INFORMATION THAT STAFF GET.

BUT WE SPECIFICALLY WANTED ONE ON MICROAGGRESSIONS AND BETTER UNDERSTANDING HOW YOU RECOGNIZE THEM AND HOW YOU DEAL WITH THEM.

AND I THINK THAT'S A GOOD IDEA.
