IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING, NONE CALL FOR A VOTE.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF APPROVING TONIGHT'S AGENDA, PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE, AYE.
ANY ABSTENTIONS? AND THE TONIGHT'S AGENDA IS APPROVED AS PRESENTED.
OH, YAY. NOW WE HAVE THE MOST FUN THING.
[6. SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS 6:35 pm]
JOE WEBSTER AND HIS WONDERFUL STAFF AND STUDENTS ARE GOING TO DO A PRESENTATION FOR US FROM MEADOWDALE MIDDLE SCHOOL.DO I SAY MY NAME FIRST? UH, HELLO. MY NAME IS ADI LANGHAM.
WE'RE PRESENTING ABOUT WEBB, WHERE EVERYONE BELONGS.
THE QUESTION ALL OF YOU MIGHT BE ASKING IS WHAT IS WEBB? THERE ARE THREE GOALS TO HAVING OR TO BEING A SUCCESSFUL WEBB LEADER.
IT'S TO EASE THE TRANSITION FROM ELEMENTARY TO MIDDLE SCHOOL.
THERE'S ALSO STUDENT TO STUDENT MENTORING AND TO DEVELOP LEADERSHIP AND SOCIAL SKILLS.
WHO ARE MMS WEB LEADERS? MMS WEB LEADERS ARE EIGHTH GRADERS WHO HELP SEVENTH GRADERS WITH THE TRANSITION FROM SEVENTH GRADE TO EIGHTH GRADE.
AND THEN WE JUST WORK ON ALL THE ACTIVITIES THAT WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING WITH THE SEVENTH GRADERS.
AND SO IT'S REALLY FUN, THOUGH, WHAT WE GET LIKE PIZZA AND STUFF.
[00:05:08]
YEAH. SO THIS IS US PRACTICING? YEAH. THIS IS SEVENTH GRADE ORIENTATION.SORRY, THE SEVENTH GRADE ORIENTATION, THE LIKE THE BIG DAY.
THE SEVENTH GRADERS WILL COME TO THE GYM FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS.
FOR THE FIRST ABOUT 30 MINUTES.
THEY WILL PLAY SOME GROUP GAMES WITH THE ENTIRE GROUP, THE TEACHERS AND EVERYTHING.
WE ALSO WE GET TO MEET STUDENTS, MAKE FRIENDS, WE LEARN EACH OTHER'S NAMES.
WE ALSO SHOW THEM THE STAFF MEMBERS THAT CAN HELP THEM ROUND THE PLACE, THE SCHOOL PLACE.
IN THIS PHOTO, WE CAN SEE THIS IS ACTUALLY THE DAY OF ORIENTATION DAY.
ON ORIENTATION DAY WITH OUR SEVENTH GRADERS.
WE DO WHAT'S CALLED THE STRAW CHALLENGE, ONE OF OUR ACTIVITIES.
DOES ANYONE WANT TO VOLUNTEER? ALL RIGHT. HOW MANY DO YOU NEED? WE NEED TO MAKE A CIRCLE.
I THINK WE SHOULD HAVE IT. THERE'S ENOUGH RIGHT NOW.
ANY OF THE STUDENTS, STUDENT ADVISORS WANT TO JOIN US.
[INAUDIBLE], . A WESOME. OKAY, WE'RE GOOD.
[LAUGHTER] . JUST ONE THING WE SEVENTH GRADERS WILL LEARN FROM THIS ACTIVITY IS TO WORK AS A TEAM AND GET FAMILIAR WITH EACH OTHER AND, YOU KNOW, LEARNING EACH OTHER'S NAMES, LIKE, HEY, YOU'RE REALLY MESSING UP AT, [LAUGHTER].
[00:10:02]
THAT'S ONE OF OUR ACTIVITIES THAT WE DO, ALONG WITH MANY OTHERS.THANK YOU. THIS IS ACTUALLY ANOTHER ACTIVITY CALLED ONE LEFT.
NOW, DO I HAVE A VOLUNTEER TO PLAY WITH? JUST ONE RIGHT HERE.
IT SHOULD BE. THEY COULD JUST SAT DOWN.
BUT. OKAY, SO THERE'S 15 STRAWS.
SO THE WHOLE POINT OF THE GAME IS TO NOT PICK UP THE LAST STRAW.
SO YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO PICK UP AT LEAST ONE, TWO OR THREE STRAWS.
YOU'RE TRYING NOT TO PICK UP THE LAST STRAW.
SO DO YOU WANT TO GO FIRST? OR SHOULD I? [INAUDIBLE], [APPLAUSE] . SO THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS ACTIVITY IS TO SAY, I KNOW MORE THAN YOU DO.
AND WE AND AND THAT MEANS THAT WE CAN TEACH YOU MORE ABOUT THE SCHOOL AND WE CAN TELL YOU AND TEACH YOU MORE LEADERSHIP. AFTER THE ORIENTATION.
OUR WEB LEADERS WILL MEET FOUR TIMES THIS YEAR WITH ALL OF OUR SEVENTH GRADE GROUPS.
AND WE ACTUALLY JUST HAD OUR FIRST MEETING ONE WEEK AGO AND IT WENT WELL.
WE'RE TRYING TO MAKE SURE EVERYBODY KNOWS THEIR NAMES AND TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS GOING GREAT AT THE START OF OUR MMS SCHOOL YEAR. AND ALL OF THESE ACTIVITIES WILL APPEAR DURING HOMEROOM.
HOW DOES WEB BENEFIT MMS? HOW IT MOST BENEFITS OUR SCHOOL IS IT REALLY HELPS THE SEVENTH GRADERS TRANSITION FROM LIKE AN ELEMENTARY ENVIRONMENT TO A MIDDLE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT AND WHAT THAT'S LIKE.
AND IT TEACHES THEM A LOT ABOUT THAT KIND OF THING.
DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? I HAVE A QUESTION.
YES. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE GROUP FACILITATION AND LEADERSHIP STRATEGIES THAT YOU'VE LEARNED THAT YOU FEEL ARE THE MOST HAVE BEEN MOST EFFECTIVE? I'M ONE OF THE STRONGEST ONES IS PROBABLY.
BECAUSE IT'S LIKE PRESENTING YOURSELF, GETTING TO EXPRESS YOURSELF IN LEARNING.
AND WE ALL GET TO LEARN MORE ABOUT YOU.
AND THAT'S WHAT. THAT'S WHAT A LEADER NEEDS.
YOU NEED TO GET PEOPLE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT YOURSELF.
ANYBODY ELSE HAVE A QUESTION? SURE. WELL, ANY IDEAS OR OTHER IDEAS ON GROUP FACILITATION AND LEADERSHIP? SOMETHING THAT I REALLY LEARNED ABOUT, LIKE GROUP FACILITATION AND HOW I CAN PRESENT MYSELF TO PEOPLE THAT I'M LEADING IS LIKE GETTING OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE.
WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITH MYSELF? SO I HAD TO LEARN TO REALLY PUT MYSELF OUT THERE BECAUSE THEY'RE GOING TO TAKE THE ENERGY THAT I GIVE THEM.
SO WE'RE GOING TO DO THIS AND THEN THIS.
THEN THEY'RE JUST GOING TO DO THE SAME THING.
SO I HAD TO LEARN HOW TO GET OUT OF MY SHELL A LITTLE BIT.
IT ALSO HELPS LEADERS THEMSELVES FOR THE BIG ORIENTATION AND TEACHING SEVENTH GRADERS.
IT TEACHES THEM HOW TO BE A BIG ROLE MODEL, ALL OF THAT AND LIKE TO LEARN HOW TO LIKE NOT CARE ABOUT BEING COOL BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT BEING COOL IN FRONT OF THESE SEVENTH GRADERS. YOU'RE BEING A HILARIOUS MESS.
[00:15:02]
BUT PUT TOGETHER. BUT, YOU KNOW, THE SEVENTH GRADERS THINK YOU'RE LIKE A TEACHER.THEY DON'T. YEAH, I'LL STOP THERE AND THEN IT'S OKAY.
AND THEN IT'S OKAY TO BE A HILARIOUS MESS SOMETIMES.
YEAH. IT ALSO PROVIDES A LOT OF PUBLIC SPEAKING SINCE YOU HAVE 9 TO 12 STUDENTS.
BUT IT'S ALSO NICE TO HAVE YOU ALSO GET TO MEET ANOTHER WEB LEADER IN THE PROCESS.
SO BEING ABLE TO BE AROUND ALL THE SEVENTH GRADERS ALSO MAKING A NEW FRIEND AT THE SAME TIME.
IT'S PRETTY AWESOME TO BE A WEB LEADER.
THANK YOU. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? I JUST HAD ONE. SO WHEN YOU MEET WITH THE INCOMING STUDENTS IN THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, DO YOU MEET AS A GROUP LATER ON OR.
YES, WE DO. WE AGAIN, AS HE JUST SAID, WE MEET AS A GROUP ALL TOGETHER, LIKE 9 TO 12 KIDS.
AND BEFORE THAT, WE HAD WE ALSO HAD A LARGE GROUP OF STUDENTS COME INTO THE SCHOOL.
GOT IT. IT SEEMS LIKE SUCH A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY.
YEAH. YOU ALSO DID WHAT GOOD TEACHERS DO, AND THAT'S YOU ENGAGED US WITH AN INTERACTIVE ACTIVITY WHERE WE LEARN SOMETHING AT THE SAME TIME THAT WE WERE HAVING FUN. THAT WAS THOSE WERE GREAT EXAMPLES THAT YOU USED.
DO ANY OF OUR STUDENTS HAVE COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS OF THE MIDDLE KIDS? AH, GO FOR IT, ELIZABETH.
PERFECT. I ATTENDED MEADOWDALE MIDDLE AND I REMEMBER GOING THROUGH THE WHOLE WEB PROCESS AND LIKE, BEING LIKE A WEB KID, AND I THOUGHT IT WAS SO COOL LOOKING UP TO MY WEB LEADERS.
AND I REMEMBER LIKE, THE PENCIL GAME I COULD NEVER GET.
BUT I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WAS SUCH A FUN TIME.
AND HONESTLY, THIS REMINDS ME OF SOMETHING WE DO NOW IN HIGH SCHOOL AT MEADOW HIGH, WHERE IT'S LIKE LEADERS AND UPPERCLASSMEN, LIKE SOPHOMORES, LIKE TAKE THE INCOMING FRESHMEN AND JUST GIVE THEM AN ORIENTATION ON LIKE WHAT HIGH SCHOOL IS LIKE.
SO I THINK IT'S REALLY INTERESTING TO GET THAT SAME PROCESS IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL.
GOOD JOB. AND IT ALSO LOOKS LIKE SOME OF YOU WILL BECOME STUDENT ADVISORS FOR THE BOARD.
DEFINITELY. THANKS, ELIZABETH.
WE WOULD ALSO LIKE TO GIVE A THANKS TO MR. HOWARD AND MS. MILLER AND MR. KENDRICK FOR TRAINING US ON HOW TO BECOME WEB LEADERS.
SORRY. THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH FOR COMING AND FOR SHARING.
AND NOW MR. WEBSTER WILL SHARE THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANNING THAT'S BEEN GOING ON AT MEADOWDALE MIDDLE.
AND IT WAS ALSO THEIR IDEA TO DO THE ACTIVITIES.
I WANT TO MAKE SURE I GIVE THEM CREDIT FOR THAT.
IS THIS ON OK? ALL RIGHT? YEAH.
SO OUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN.
FIRST, I JUST WANTED TO GIVE YOU A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF OUR SCHOOL.
WE HAVE 735 STUDENTS IN TWO GRADES.
50% OF OUR STUDENTS QUALIFY FOR MEAL BENEFITS, AND OUR STUDENTS SPEAK 17 DIFFERENT LANGUAGES.
SO WE HAVE A VERY DIVERSE STUDENT BODY.
HELLO. THULANI FREEMAN, PROUD ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AT MEADOWDALE MIDDLE.
OUR DEMOGRAPHICS AT OUR SCHOOL.
WE HAVE A VERY DIVERSE STUDENT BODY AND AN INCREASINGLY DIVERSE STAFF.
THE NUMBERS REPRESENT THE PERCENTAGES OF STAFF IN THOSE DIFFERENT ETHNIC RACIAL GROUPS AND WE HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO HIRE FOUR STAFF IN THE PAST FEW YEARS WHO ARE BILINGUAL IN SPANISH, WHICH IS A FAST GROWING COMPONENT OF OUR STUDENT BODY, BOTH OUR MULTI LANGUAGE LEARNERS AND OUR OUR LATINO STUDENTS.
SO OUR MISSION IS TO ADVOCATE FOR EACH AND EVERY STUDENT BY PROVIDING LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS THAT EMBRACE THEIR CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC DIVERSITY AS AN ASSET THAT WILL PREPARE THEM FOR SUCCESS AS LIFELONG LEARNERS AND RESPONSIBLE WORLD CITIZENS.
WE HAVE THREE CORE VALUES AT MEADOWDALE MIDDLE SCHOOL COMMUNITY, GROWTH AND PURPOSE.
[00:20:06]
COLLABORATION WITHIN OUR DEPARTMENTS.WE'RE COMMITTED TO PROVIDING A POSITIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT THAT IS EQUITY BASED AND FOCUSED ON THE CONSISTENT USE OF STRONG INSTRUCTIONAL INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES AND APPROPRIATE RIGOR FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS.
SO LET'S TALK ABOUT OUR GOALS IN OUR CIP.
WE'RE GOING TO BRIEFLY MENTION OUR FIRST TWO GOALS, WHICH ARE ACADEMIC GOALS IN READING AND MATH.
AS A QUICK DISCLAIMER, I WILL SAY THAT WHEN I HAD TO TURN THIS PRESENTATION IN, WE DID NOT HAVE SOME OF OUR BASELINE DATA FROM FALL DIAGNOSTICS AND SURVEYS THAT WE ADMINISTERED DURING SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER.
SO IF YOU'RE WONDERING WHERE THOSE NUMBERS ARE, I HAVE SOME OF THEM.
IF YOU'D LIKE TO ASK LATER, BUT THEY'RE NOT IN THE PRESENTATION.
BUT OUR READING GOAL IS GOING TO BE FOCUSED ON GROWTH IN READING FOR OUR STUDENTS USING I READY.
OUR GOAL THIS YEAR IS AT 75% OF OUR STUDENTS WILL MEET THEIR ANNUAL TYPICAL GROWTH GOALS.
SO WHAT THAT SAYS IS THAT BASED ON WHERE THEY START IN SEPTEMBER, HOW MUCH GROWTH COULD YOU EXPECT A STUDENT TO HAVE OVER THE COURSE OF A TYPICAL SCHOOL YEAR? AND WE'RE ALSO WE ALSO HAVE SEPARATE GOALS FOR OUR STUDENTS IN OUR MULTILINGUAL LEARNER PROGRAM AND FOR OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE HISPANIC OR LATINAS THEY HAVE THEIR THEIR DATA HAS BEEN LAGGING, UNFORTUNATELY, BEHIND THEIR PEERS.
AND SO WE'VE SET SEPARATE GOALS FOR THEM IN THE ACTUAL DOCUMENT.
THERE'S ALSO SOMETHING MENTIONING A STRETCH GOAL.
AND A STRETCH GOAL WOULD BE IF YOU HAVE A STUDENT WHO'S MORE THAN ONE YEAR BEHIND THEIR GRADE LEVEL, HOW MUCH THEY WOULD HAVE TO GROW IN ORDER TO CLOSE THE GAP TO EVENTUALLY BE AT GRADE LEVEL WITHOUT GOING INTO A BUNCH OF DETAIL ON THAT.
BUT THAT'S WHAT A STRETCH GOAL IS IN MATH.
SIMILAR. WE'RE GOING TO USE I READY.
AND OUR GOAL IS THAT 70% OF OUR STUDENTS MEET THEIR ANNUAL TYPICAL GROWTH GOAL ON THE SPRING.
THEIR ATTENDANCE IS NOT GOING TO BE GENERALLY AS GOOD.
THEY'RE GOING TO BE LESS LIKELY TO ASK FOR HELP WHEN THEY NEED IT.
AND SO HISTORICALLY, SCHOOLS HAVE OFFERED EXTRACURRICULAR PROGRAMS LIKE SPORTS CLUBS, MUSIC PROGRAMS, THINGS THAT DO INCREASE STUDENTS SENSE OF BELONGING BUT ARE VOLUNTARY AND THEIR AND SO, YOU KNOW, STUDENTS WHO ALREADY TEND TO HAVE A HIGH SENSE OF BELONGING WILL JOIN THOSE PROGRAMS AND OTHERS MIGHT FEEL LIKE THERE'S NOTHING THERE FOR THEM.
SO HOW CAN WE DO THAT? THE FIRST ONE. SOME OF YOU MIGHT REMEMBER FROM THREE YEARS AGO WHEN WE LAUNCHED OUR HOUSE PROGRAM, WHICH MEANT THAT AS SOON AS EVERY STUDENT WALKED IN THE DOOR, THEY BELONG TO ONE OF FIVE HOUSES. THEY'RE JUST COLORED PURPLE, RED, YELLOW, AND THEY COMPETE FOR FUN DURING ASSEMBLIES, BUT ALSO SOMETIMES IN FUNDRAISERS.
WE EVEN AT QUARTERLY CHECK ATTENDANCE AND WE AWARD HOUSE POINTS BASED UPON THAT.
WE HAD OUR FIRST ONE LAST SPRING BECAUSE THE PANDEMIC INTERRUPTED OUR LAUNCH YEAR OF THIS.
THESE ARE SOME PICTURES OF KIDS REPRESENTING THEIR HOUSES AT ASSEMBLIES.
STAFF MEMBERS PARTICIPATE, AND IT'S A LOT OF FUN.
WEBB I WON'T GO INTO THAT BECAUSE YOU JUST LEARNED A WHOLE LOT ABOUT WEBB.
YOU MENTIONED LINK AND WEBB AND LINK ARE PRODUCED BY THE SAME ORGANIZATION.
SO THEY'RE VERY CLOSELY ALIGNED IN THEIR GOALS AND THEIR RESEARCH.
AND THERE'S OUR LINK LEADERS OR WEBB LEADERS.
SORRY. AND THEN THULANI IS GOING TO TALK ABOUT PROGRAM WE'RE JUST LAUNCHING THIS YEAR.
AND WE WERE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO EARN A GRANT FROM THE FOUNDATION FOR EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT.
SO A BIG THANK YOU TO THE FOUNDATION FOR THAT GRANT, WHICH ENABLED US TO GET THAT THAT CURRICULUM.
[00:25:07]
LEVEL. THIS YEAR WE PLAN ON USING 18 OF THOSE LESSONS IN OUR HOME ROOM PERIODS TO REALLY BUILD DIFFERENT SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING SKILLS.AND THOSE LESSONS ARE ALIGNED TO THE CASTLE STRATEGIES, THE FIVE CASTLE STRATEGIES, CASTLE CASTLE, WHICH IS THE CENTER FOR ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING OUT OF CHICAGO. AND THESE LESSONS ARE DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS AT GRADE LEVEL.
CHARACTER STRONG IS HERE BASED IN WASHINGTON STATE.
THESE LESSONS REALLY GET TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER ABOUT WHAT WE VALUE.
NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE. PREVIOUS SLIDE.
THEY ADDRESS STUDENTS EMOTIONAL REGULATION, HELP THEM UNDERSTAND STRESS AND ANXIETY.
HELP STUDENTS REALLY OPENLY DISCUSS EMPATHY FOR EACH OTHERS, FOR THEIR PEERS, FOR OTHER STUDENTS, AND IN HOW TO HANDLE CONFLICT AS WELL AS ACADEMIC SKILLS SUCH AS PLANNING AHEAD, THOSE SELF MANAGEMENT SKILLS, THOSE SELF REGULATION SKILLS THAT ARE REALLY IMPORTANT FOR SUCCESS IN INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM.
JOE MENTIONED THE PANORAMA STUDENT SURVEY.
AND THE QUESTIONS WE LOOK AT, WE REALLY DIVE DEEP ON IS HOW CONNECTED DO YOU, MEANING THE STUDENTS, FEEL TO THE ADULTS AT YOUR SCHOOL? HOW CONNECTED DO YOU FEEL TO OTHER STUDENTS AT YOUR SCHOOL? AND OVERALL, HOW MUCH DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU BELONG AT YOUR SCHOOL? HOW MUCH DO YOU FEEL LIKE BELONGING? AND THAT'S A REAL QUESTION ABOUT THAT REALLY HELPS KIDS UNDERSTAND WHERE THEY ARE, WHERE THEY BELONG.
ON THE ON THE PANORAMIC SURVEY.
AND ANOTHER WAY WE'RE GOING TO MONITOR FOR GOAL NUMBER THREE IS THERE'S ANOTHER WHOLE BANK OF QUESTIONS ABOUT STUDENT COMPETENCY, BECAUSE CHARACTER STRONG ALSO TEACHES KIDS ABOUT MANAGING THEIR TIME, BEING AWARE IN A SOCIAL SETTING OF HOW OTHERS ARE PERCEIVING THEM.
AND WHAT HAPPENED? IT FREES UP.
THERE WE GO. AND THE LAST IS WE'RE GOING TO MONITOR STUDENT ATTENDANCE DATA.
AND GOOD ATTENDANCE IN OUR HOME ROOM DATABASE IS CONSIDERED TO BE 90% ATTENDANCE.
CURRENTLY WE'RE AT 72%, SO WE'RE STILL NOT BACK TO WHERE WE WERE PRE-PANDEMIC.
OUR GOAL IS GET BACK TO 80% OR HIGHER BY THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR AND WEEKLY.
WE HAVE AN ATTENDANCE TEAM MEETING, MONITORING ATTENDANCE AND A STUDENT ENGAGEMENT TEAM MEETING WHERE WE CRAFT INTERVENTIONS FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE REALLY HAVING CHRONIC ATTENDANCE ISSUES. SO JUST A QUICK UPDATE ON OUR PROGRESS.
WE DID, AS THE KIDS MENTIONED, HAVE OUR FIRST WEB ACTIVITY.
OUR FIRST HOUSE ASSEMBLY, WE HAD THE THIRD WEEK OF SCHOOL.
IT WAS A BLAST GREEN HOUSE ONE.
BUT CURRENTLY BLUE HOUSE IS WINNING IN THE VIKING RUN FUNDRAISER, WHICH IS A VERY LARGE EVENT AND STUDENTS ARE RESPONDING TO OUR ATTENDANCE OUTREACH FROM THE MIDDLE OF SEPTEMBER TO NOW.
ATTENDANCE IS UP 5% AND SO WE'RE HOPING TO KEEP BUILDING ON THAT.
ANY QUESTIONS? I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT THE HOUSES.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD THE THAT PROGRAM AND HAVE YOU SEEN IMPROVEMENT? IS THERE ANY WAY.
I REALIZE WE HAD THE PANDEMIC IN THE MIDDLE, BUT WAS THERE IS THERE ANY WAY THAT YOU'VE SEEN THAT IT'S IMPROVED ATTENDANCE? IT'S HARD FOR ME TO COMMENT ON ITS IMPACT ON ATTENDANCE JUST BECAUSE WE LAUNCHED IT IN 2019, 2020, AND SO IN FEBRUARY, IN MARCH, THAT ALL WENT AWAY. AND THEN WE'VE HAD TWO STRANGE YEARS.
THE IMPACT, I WOULD SAY, IS WHERE WE ASK KIDS WHERE YOUR HOUSE COLORS ARE.
WE'RE GOING TO HAVE AN ASSEMBLY.
IT'S PRETTY HARD TO FIND A KID WHO THEY MIGHT COME TO SCHOOL AT FIRST AND NOT BE SURE.
IS EVERYBODY ACTUALLY GOING TO DO THIS OR NOT? BUT THEN BY THE TIME THE ASSEMBLY ROLLS ALONG, THEY'VE FOUND SOMETHING YELLOW TO PUT ON.
[00:30:03]
AND SO SO I WOULD JUST FROM A SCHOOL CULTURE PERSPECTIVE, I'D SAY IT'S BEEN VERY POSITIVE AS FAR AS BEING ABLE TO QUANTIFY IT IN A NUMBER LIKE ATTENDANCE.SO IT'S INTERESTING TO HEAR YOU TALK ABOUT ATTENDANCE BECAUSE WE JUST CAME FROM A STUDY SESSION WHERE WE WERE LOOKING AT DISTRICT WIDE ATTENDANCE DATA, AND IT IS OF CONCERN ACROSS THE DISTRICT. SO WE ARE HOPING THAT ALL OF THE DISTRICT AND SCHOOL STAFF WILL WORK ON FIGURING OUT HOW TO ENCOURAGE PARENTS AND KIDS TO BE ATTENDING MORE.
BUT I THINK THE KINDS OF THINGS YOU GUYS ARE DOING AT MEADOW DALE MIDDLE ARE CERTAINLY GREAT STRATEGIES FOR HELPING TO IMPROVE KIDS FEELING OF BELONGING, WHICH SHOULD RESULT IN HIGHER ATTENDANCE AS WELL, AND FEELING GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES AND THE CLIMATE THERE.
SO THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING THAT YOU GUYS ARE DOING.
DO OUR STUDENTS HAVE ANY COMMENTS? OUR QUESTIONS.
HONESTLY, I'M IMPRESSED THAT YOU GUYS CAME UP WITH THAT IDEA.
THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN COOL TO HAVE WHEN I WAS THERE, BUT THAT'S HONESTLY REALLY COOL BECAUSE I SEE NOW AT MEADOWDALE AT HIGH SCHOOL, WE NOTICE A BIG LACK IN SCHOOL SPIRIT DUE TO THE PANDEMIC AND PEOPLE NOT KNOWING WHAT A REAL ASSEMBLY IS LIKE OR WHAT REAL HIGH SCHOOL CULTURE IS LIKE WHEN HOMECOMING ROLLS AROUND OR WHEN BIG SCHOOL SPIRIT WEEKS LIKE THAT ROLL AROUND.
SO HAVING THAT WARM UP IN MIDDLE SCHOOL IS REALLY GOOD BECAUSE LIKE ON ASB, WE STRUGGLE SO MUCH TRYING TO GET THESE KIDS TO BE INVOLVED BECAUSE THEY DON'T REALLY UNDERSTAND THE CULTURE BEHIND IT.
BUT HAVING A BACKGROUND TOWARDS IT WOULD BE REALLY GOOD COMING INTO HIGH SCHOOL.
[LAUGHTER]. AND I WANT TO MAKE SURE I GIVE CREDIT TO SARAH SHOEMAKER, WHO'S NOW AT LINDA ELEMENTARY.
SHE WAS A BIG PART OF US LAUNCHING THAT AND HAD A LOT OF THE IDEAS BEHIND IT.
SURE. WHAT TIME? AROUND? THREE ISH. OKAY.
AWESOME. WE DO HAVE AN EMAIL SYSTEM, BUT THAT'S OKAY.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR TIME.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. APPRECIATE IT.
[APPLAUSE]. NEXT, I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO DR.
MINER FOR THE SUPERINTENDENT REPORT.
[7. SUPERINTENDENT REPORT-7:00 pm]
DIRECTOR KILGORE, HERE'S A WEB LEADER T-SHIRT FOR YOU FOR PLAYING THE GAME.THERE YOU GO. CONGRATULATIONS.
OH, SORRY. WE'RE SHARING A MIC TONIGHT BECAUSE WE THINK WE HAVE A DEAD MIC.
SO HOPEFULLY YOU CAN HEAR ME OKAY.
WELL, I'M SURE HOPEFULLY SOME OF OUR BOARD MEMBERS WHO WERE ABLE TO ATTEND.
WE'LL TALK A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT GOVERNOR JAY INSLEE VISIT TO MEADOWDALE YESTERDAY.
THRILLED TO HOST HIM IN OUR SCHOOL AND SHARE THREE REALLY IMPORTANT PROGRAMS. AND I'LL LET THE BOARD MEMBERS TALK MOST ABOUT THAT.
LOTS OF STUDENTS GOT TO MEET THE GOVERNOR AND HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO INTERACT WITH HIM.
SO WE'RE JUST GRATEFUL TO HIM FOR COMING INTO HIS STAFF, FOR ARRANGING THAT FOR US.
IT'S A HEAVY LIFT. WHEN THE GOVERNOR TRAVELS SOMEWHERE, A LOT OF PLANNING GOES INTO IT.
AND SPECIAL THANKS TO ERIN FOR MAKING SO MUCH OF SO MANY OF THOSE LOGISTICS JUST WORK OUT GREAT.
AND I JUST WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE HERE, LOTS AND LOTS OF QUESTIONS HAVE EMERGED FROM THAT ANNOUNCEMENT.
I'M SO GRATEFUL TO THE STAFF WHO'VE TAKEN THE TIME TO EMAIL AND COMMUNICATE ABOUT THAT WITH ME AND REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO LATER IN THE WEEK HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO COLLABORATE WITH DR. VERGARA TO FIND WAYS TO ENGAGE STAFF IN THE ANSWERS TO THEIR QUESTIONS, POSSIBLY DEVELOPING A FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS LIST AND ALSO GETTING BACK OUT TO THEIR SCHOOLS TO TALK WITH THEM SOME MORE ABOUT THIS.
SO VERY GRATEFUL TO THE STAFF WHO TOOK THE TIME TO SHARE THOSE COMMENTS AND HELP US WORK ON THAT.
NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS THE APPROVAL OF MINUTES.
[8. APPROVAL OF MINUTES-7:10 pm]
THE FIRST IS APPROVING THE MINUTES FROM THE OCTOBER 4TH, 2022 STUDY SESSION.DO I HEAR A MOTION AND A SECOND TO APPROVE?
[00:35:02]
I MOVE TO APPROVE.IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE. I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SAY AYE, AYE.
ANY ABSTENTIONS? I ABSTAIN. THANK YOU.
AND THE MINUTES FROM THE OCTOBER 4TH STUDY SESSION ARE APPROVED.
NEXT IS APPROVING THE MINUTES FROM THE OCTOBER 11TH REGULAR BOARD MEETING.
DO I HEAR A MOTION AND A SECOND TO APPROVE OR MOVE TO APPROVE? SECOND. I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND FOR THE MINUTES FROM THE OCTOBER 11TH REGULAR SCHOOL BOARD MEETING.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE. I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE.
ANY ABSTENTIONS? ABSTAIN. THANK YOU.
AND THE MINUTES FROM THE OCTOBER 11TH REGULAR BOARD MEETING ARE APPROVED.
NEXT, WE HAVE PUBLIC COMMENTS.
[9. PUBLIC COMMENTS-7:15 pm]
THE PUBLIC COMMENT SECTION OF THE AGENDA IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CITIZENS TO ADDRESS THE SCHOOL BOARD.ITEMS BROUGHT FORWARD DURING THIS PORTION OF THE MEETING ARE NOT TYPICALLY ACTED UPON BY THE BOARD AT THIS TIME, BUT MAY BE FOLLOWED UP BY THE BOARD, THE SUPERINTENDENT AND OR STAFF AT A LATER TIME.
PEOPLE MAY SUBMIT PUBLIC COMMENTS FOR A BOARD MEETING IN THREE DIFFERENT WAYS.
AND THREE, YOU MAY CHOOSE TO SUBMIT YOUR COMMENT IN WRITING.
WE HAD THREE WRITTEN COMMENTS THAT WILL BE ATTACHED TO THE BOARD DOCS WEBSITE.
AND THE LAST ONE IS ABOUT THE PSAT.
IN RESPONSE TO THAT PERSON, I'D SAY CALL YOUR COUNSELOR, YOUR CHILD'S COUNSELOR TO GET INFORMATION.
WE HAVE ONE PERSON WHO HAD INDICATED THEY WANTED TO SPEAK VIRTUALLY.
DO WE HAVE THAT PERSON ONLINE? THAT'S SUPER.
SO THAT'S GOING TO BE STEPHANIE SHINDELL.
I BELIEVE. STEPHANIE, ARE YOU.
CAN YOU HEAR US? WELL, WHILE WE'RE WAITING, LET ME CONTINUE.
THE BOARD ALSO ACCEPTS WRITTEN COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS AT ANY TIME THROUGH EMAIL.
CAN YOU HEAR US? I CAN HEAR YOU.
OH, GO AHEAD YOU HAVE 3 MINUTES.
CAN YOU HEAR ME? YES. THE BOARD ALSO ACCEPTS WRITTEN COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS AT ANY TIME BY MAIL.
WE APPRECIATE THE EFFORT IT TAKES TO WRITE TO US WHILE WE ENCOURAGE AND APPRECIATE.
STEPHANIE. STEPHANIE, ARE YOU THERE? I CAN HEAR YOU.
I THINK THERE'S A LITTLE OVERLAP IN THE OF THE SOUND.
[INAUDIBLE] SHE'S PROBABLY WATCHING.
IT'S THE VIDEO FEED VERSUS [INAUDIBLE]
[00:40:03]
. AND I THINK WE SHOULD MOVE TO THE PEOPLE THAT ARE HERE.AND THEN IF WE CAN GET HER ON THE LINE TO MAKE, THE FINAL COMMENT WOULD PROBABLY BE BEST.
STEPHANIE, IF YOU CAN HEAR ME, WE'RE GOING TO MOVE AHEAD AND TRY TO CONNECT WITH YOU AFTER.
IF A COMMENT BECOMES TOO LENGTHY, I MAY NEED TO INTERRUPT IN ORDER TO ALLOW EACH PERSON EQUAL TIME FOR THOSE MAKING THEIR COMMENT IN PERSON, PLEASE GO TO THE PODIUM, SPEAK CLOSELY INTO THE MIC ABOUT 3 TO 6 INCHES AWAY IN ORDER TO BE HEARD CLEARLY.
SIMILARLY, WE ASK EVERYONE IN THE AUDIENCE TO PLEASE SHOW RESPECT BY LISTENING QUIETLY WITHOUT TALKING OR WHISPERING TO EACH OTHER SO THAT EVERYONE CAN HEAR EACH COMMENT.
SO THE FIRST PERSON WHO WILL BE SPEAKING IN PERSON IS EMILY FOREMAN.
I'M A SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST AT MEADOW DALE MIDDLE SCHOOL.
I THINK WE'VE ACTUALLY MET BEFORE.
SO WE'RE WRITING TO YOU ON BEHALF OF THE EDUCATORS AT MEADOW DALE MIDDLE SCHOOL TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT TO THE LETTER SENT BY THE EACH GROUP, AS WELL AS TO ENSURE THAT OUR SCHOOL'S POSITION IS HEARD.
CLEARLY, WE ARE AWARE OF THE GROUP OF PEOPLE ATTENDING SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS SINCE LAST SPRING WHO HAVE BEEN CONSISTENTLY MAKING PUBLIC COMMENTS THAT ARE HOMOPHOBIC AND TRANSPHOBIC. AS EDUCATORS WITHIN THE DISTRICT, WE KNOW THAT THIS IS NOT THE VIEWPOINT THAT THE ESD HOLDS.
OUR EDUCATORS FOLLOW THE SCHOOL BOARD POLICY 3211 SUPPORTING GENDER INCLUSIVE SCHOOLS AND UNDERSTAND THE LEGAL AND ETHICAL OBLIGATIONS WE HAVE TO CREATE A SAFE AND INCLUSIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL STUDENTS, INCLUDING TRANSGENDER AND GENDER DIVERSE STUDENTS.
THE OTHER PURPOSE IS TO SECOND THE REQUEST OF THE EACH LETTER FOR THE BOARD TO CONSULT WITH THEIR LEGAL COUNSEL REGARDING IF AND WHEN THESE HARMFUL AND HATEFUL COMMENTS CAN BE STOPPED. AT THE VERY LEAST, WE EXPECT PROACTIVE AND CLEAR SUPPORT FROM THE BOARD FOR OUR LGBTQIA STUDENTS AND COLLEAGUES AT THESE MEETINGS.
THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT TO PUT POLICY INTO ACTION BY STANDING CLEARLY, LOUDLY AND VISIBLY IN SUPPORT OF OUR LGBTQIA STUDENTS, FAMILIES AND COLLEAGUES. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION.
NEXT STEP TO SPEAK IS RICHARD GIBSON.
HI, I'M REVEREND RICHARD GIBSON, A RETIRED PRESBYTERIAN MINISTER.
A PARENT OF A TEACHER AND A GRANDPARENT OF TWO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, AS WELL AS A LONG TIME COMMUNITY ACTIVIST WITHIN OUR DISTRICT. I CAME TONIGHT TO SPEAK ABOUT THE CURRENT DISCUSSION WITHIN OUR SCHOOLS ABOUT GAY, LESBIAN AND TRANSGENDER STUDENTS AND STAFF.
[00:45:03]
SOMETHING BEST ABOUT WHAT THEY NEED.THEY NEED SEPARATION, ISOLATION, DENIAL OF WHO THEY ARE.
THEY'RE BROKEN, THEY'RE SINFUL, OR THEY SHOULD BE EXCLUDED.
THEY SHOULD NOT BE IN OUR SCHOOLS, NOT IN OUR HOMES.
AS A PASTOR, AS A PARENT AND A GRANDPARENT, I'M HERE TO SAY LOUDLY THAT THESE KIDS ARE NOT OTHER.
IT WILL TAKE A LOT OF HARD WORK.
IT WILL TAKE A LOT OF SPEAKING UP REGULARLY TO BLOCK OUT THE MYTHS THAT THESE FEARFUL PEOPLE TELL.
BUT I KNOW SOME OF THE OTHER MAINLINE PASTORS IN THIS DISTRICT AND CHURCHES IN THIS DISTRICT.
AND KNOW THAT THEY ARE WELCOMING, INCLUSIVE, HUMBLE ABOUT STRANGERS, THOSE WHO ARE DIFFERENT.
SOME HAVE FLAGS OUTSIDE THEIR BUILDINGS.
ALL HAVE STUDIED AND UNDERSTAND THAT GOD CREATED A GREAT DIVERSITY OF PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT COLORS, DIFFERENT EYES, DIFFERENT HAIRSTYLES, DIFFERENT LANGUAGES. AND GOD HAS BLESSED THIS CREATION, CALLING IT GOOD AND GIVING EACH PERSON CREATED WORTH, VALUE AND DIGNITY.
SIMPLY PUT, THOSE OF US WHO LOVE AND RESPECT THE DIFFERENCES IN PEOPLE, THOSE OF US WHO CARE ABOUT GAY, LESBIAN AND TRANS PEOPLE, CHILDREN, YOUTH AND ADULTS HAVE TO BE LOUDER AND MORE DETERMINED THAN THE PEOPLE WHO DENY THEM THEIR RIGHTS AND THEIR FREEDOMS TO BE WHO THEY ARE.
SO WHETHER IT'S PLAYING SPORTS OR USING BATHROOMS OR SCHOOL LUNCHES WITH FRIENDS OR SITTING NEXT TO ME, THEY ARE NOT THEM, BUT THEY ARE MY CHILDREN.
MY BROTHER'S A CHILD OF GOD, JUST LIKE ME.
AS OTHERS HAVE SAID, JUSTICE IS LOVE MADE PUBLIC AND WE WANT THESE CHILDREN TO THRIVE.
SO TO THE BOARD, PLEASE CONTINUE YOUR GOOD WORK OF SUPPORTING THE GREAT DIVERSITY OF STUDENTS IN OUR DISTRICT AND DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO CARE FOR EACH FOR EACH STUDENT AND OFFER JUSTICE.
LOVE. AND VALUE TO THOSE WHO MAY STILL STRUGGLE WITH THEIR IDENTITY.
HI, MY NAME IS JULIE ANDERSON.
I WENT TO MEDICAL SCHOOL ALL THROUGH MY LIFE.
THAT. I SEE THAT AS LIKE AN AFTERTHOUGHT AT THESE MEETINGS.
YOUR TEST SCORES ARE GOING LOWER AND LOWER EVERY YEAR.
WHAT YOU'RE DOING IS IS TRYING TO CREATE A BUBBLE FOR THESE KIDS.
IT'S NOT PREPARING THEM FOR THE REAL WORLD.
THEY NEED TO KNOW HOW TO GET ALONG IN THE REAL WORLD AND WHAT WILL MAKE IT SUCCESSFUL FOR THEM.
THEY SHOULD KNOW HOW TO BE STRONG EVERY DAY.
THEY SHOULD LEARN HOW TO BE STRONGER PHYSICALLY.
PSYCHOLOGICALLY, INTELLECTUALLY AND FINANCIALLY.
THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF YOUR SCHOOL IS TO GET YOU READY TO MAKE MONEY WHEN YOU GET OUT OF SCHOOL.
I DON'T SEE THAT BEING TAUGHT.
IF YOU START GOING BACKWARDS IN YOUR EDUCATION PROCESS, MAYBE YOUR TEST SCORES WILL START GOING UP.
THE PROCESSES THAT WERE 20 YEARS AGO, 30 YEARS AGO GOT MUCH BETTER TEST SCORES THAN YOU DO NOW.
BUT THESE FRIENDS OF MINE ARE CHRISTIANS.
[00:50:01]
AND MAKE NO MISTAKE, THEY COME HERE WITH LOVE IN THEIR HEARTS.THEY ARE CONCERNED FOR THE CHILDREN, WHAT YOU'RE DOING TO THE CHILDREN.
TRUST ME, THEY ARE NOT FEARFUL.
AND I AM VERY PROUD OF ALL OF THEM.
THANK YOU. NEXT UP IS KYRIE COURTNEY.
THIS IS THE TRUE HISTORY OF TRANSGENDER PEOPLE AND THE WAYS IN WHICH WE WERE SEEN AS BOTH ANGELS AND AS DEMONS THROUGHOUT HISTORY IN THE SETTLEMENTS OF THE ORIGINAL INHABITANTS OF THIS LAND SINCE TIME IMMEMORIAL.
WE NOW KNOW THEM AS TWO SPIRITS.
THIS PERSPECTIVE IS NOT UNIQUE TO OUR FIRST NATIONS EITHER.
IN ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIA, PRIESTESSES OF THE GODDESS ISHTAR, LATER KNOWN AS GAIA MOTHER EARTH, SANG OF HER GODDESSES ABILITY TO CHANGE MEN INTO WOMEN AND WOMEN INTO MEN. AND THE FIRST KNOWN POEM IN HUMAN HISTORY SPEAKS OF THIS GREEK AND ROMAN MEDICAL TEXTS ASSERTED THAT THEIR NOTION OF GENDER WAS FLUID AND WAS ABLE TO BE CHANGED BEFORE OR AFTER BIRTH.
IT WAS BELIEVED THAT THOSE WHO HAD TRANSCENDED THEIR CIRCUMSTANCES OF THEIR BIRTH WERE CHOSEN BY THE GODS THEMSELVES AND SERVED IN THE HIGH PRIESTS AS THE HIGH PRIESTESSES AND THE ORACLES OF ANTIQUITY IN THE TORAH AND THE TALMUD.
EIGHT DIFFERENT SEX CATEGORIES EXIST.
AND EVEN THE SCIENCE USED TO CARE FOR THE FIRST PEOPLE WE WOULD NOW KNOW AS TRANSGENDER.
NOT EVERYONE WOULD SEE US IN SUCH ESTEEM.
HE FED THEM ALIVE TO WAR DOGS IN CASE THERE WAS ANY DOUBT AS TO WHO THE REAL SAVAGES WERE IN THAT EQUATION, THE CROWN DECREED THAT TO TOLERATE HARBOR OR ASSOCIATE WITH TWO SPIRIT PEOPLES WOULD MEAN DEATH.
IN 1775, THE PLAN WAS DIVISIVE.
QUOTE WE EXPECT THAT THESE ACCURSED PEOPLE WILL DISAPPEAR WITH THE GROWTH OF THE MISSIONS.
AND THEY USE THIS FALSE FEAR OF CORRUPTION OF THEIR YOUTH TO EXTERMINATE US BY THE THOUSANDS.
THE ONLY MONSTERS UNDER YOUR BED THIS HALLOWEEN OR IN YOUR BATHROOMS ARE THE ONES THAT YOU IMAGINE.
THANK YOU. AND NEXT IS JOLENE BRIDWELL.
UH, THANK YOU. I AM NOT A VERY POISED PUBLIC SPEAKER, SO I AM GOING TO READ MY STATEMENT.
AND ORIGINALLY I'D WRITTEN THIS EMAIL TO PRESENT PRINCIPAL SHOCKLEY AT MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL.
I KNOW THAT THE HIGHEST STANDARD OF SAFETY IS WHAT IS WHAT WE ALL WANT FOR OUR CHILDREN.
THERE ARE SO MANY FACTORS THAT WE TAKE THAT TAKE PLACE WHEN THESE SITUATIONS HAPPEN AND DIFFERENT.
[00:55:04]
THEY ARE DIFFERENT EVERY TIME.WHAT OF ME? ACTIONS ARE BEING TAKEN TO IMPROVE THE SECURITY OF OUR SCHOOLS.
I KNOW THAT THERE HAVE BEEN BARRICADES AND EXTRA SECURITY MEASURES.
WHAT ARE THE PLANS FOR THE CURRENT ISSUES? AS A PARENT OF THE STUDENTS, I FEEL LIKE I HEAR ABOUT THE INCIDENCES, BUT I HAVEN'T HEARD IF THERE IS A PLAN IN PLACE TO IMPROVE THE CURRENT ISSUES.
I KNOW THAT THERE ARE MANY TIP LINES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIONS OR ANY KNOWLEDGE OF THREATS. WHAT IS THE DISTRICT CURRENTLY DOING TO IMPROVE THE IMMEDIATE SAFETY OF OUR SCHOOLS TODAY? I'M HAPPY TO LISTEN, TO HELP, TO ORGANIZE, TO ADVOCATE, TO COLLECT INFORMATION, WHATEVER HELP PARENTS CAN DO TO HELP.
I APPRECIATE THE QUICK RESPONSE FROM OUR LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AND YOUR STAFF.
IS THERE FURTHER COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS PLANNED? I CRIED ON MY COMMUTE TODAY HOME WITH OVERWHELMING ACHE OF CONCERN FOR MY CHILDREN AND WHAT I COULD DO TO HELP THEM REMAIN SAFE. EXCUSE ME.
PLEASE MAKE ME AWARE OF ANY THING PARENTS CAN DO TO HELP.
IF THERE IS A PLAN, I WOULD APPRECIATE IT.
AND I'M GOING TO ASK YOU TO CONNECT WITH MR. SCHWAB, WHO IS SITTING AT THE BACK TABLE.
AND I THINK IT WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL FOR YOU AND MR. SCHWAB TO TALK PERHAPS TO ALLAY SOME OF YOUR FEARS.
SO THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THAT FORWARD.
WE'RE GOING TO TRY ONE MORE TIME TO GET STEPHANIE.
WE'RE GOING TO GO LOW TECH IF IT DOESN'T WORK, BUT WE'LL GIVE THIS A WHIRL FIRST.
STEPHANIE, CAN YOU HEAR US? ON THE COMPREHENSIVE SAFETY PLANS THAT ARE IN PLACE ACROSS THE DISTRICT.
AND I THINK IT WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL FOR YOU AND MR. SCHWAB TO TALK PERHAPS FULLY SOME OF YOUR FEARS.
SO THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THAT FORWARD.
WE'RE GOING TO TRY ONE MORE TIME TO GET STEPHANIE.
AND IF THIS DOESN'T WORK THIS TIME, I'M GOING TO.
YEAH, EXACTLY. YOU DON'T WANT TO WAIT IT OUT.
OKAY, LET ME GO TRY. YEAH, LET ME JUST STEP OUT REAL QUICK.
I CAN GET HER. WE LOOK AT HER PHONE NUMBER.
CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? YES. YOU'RE YOU TO TALK? PERHAPS. BUT STEPHANIE, WE STILL HEAR AN OVER VOICE.
I THINK WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO DO, STEPHANIE, IS PROBABLY GO AHEAD AND MUTE YOUR MICROPHONE.
AND BECAUSE WHAT WE'RE HEARING IS THAT FEEDBACK IN THE BACK.
SO MY NAME IS STEPHANIE FINDLAY, AND I AM A TEACHER AT SPRUCE ELEMENTARY.
THANK YOU FOR ALL OF THE TROUBLE IN ALLOWING ME TO SPEAK TONIGHT AND HELPING MAKE THIS WORK.
SO ON BEHALF OF THE SPRUCE STAFF, WE WOULD LIKE TO STATE THAT WE HAVE CONCERNS REGARDING THE NUMEROUS UNANSWERED QUESTIONS AND INEQUITIES WE SEE IN THE PROPOSED USE OF SPRUCE ELEMENTARY AND MONTLAKE TERRACE ELEMENTARY FOR THE DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAMS SET TO BEGIN IN THE FALL OF 2023.
[01:00:07]
TO DATE AS A STAFF, WE HAVE NOT BEEN ASKED FOR ANY FEEDBACK IN INPUT OR SUPPORT IN THE PLANNING AND EARLY IMPLEMENTATION IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM.WE ARE ASKING THE BOARD AND THE LEADERS OF THE DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM FOR TIME TO THOUGHTFULLY AND ACCURATELY OBTAIN ANSWERS TO OUR QUESTIONS, TIME TO ADDRESS OUR CONCERNS, AND TIME TO SEEK COMMUNITY INPUT BEFORE FURTHERING THE IMPLEMENTATION PROCESS OF THIS PROGRAM.
TODAY WE ARE MAKING THIS STATEMENT SO THAT IT IS KNOWN THAT WE, AS SPRUCE ELEMENTARY, WANT THE BEST FOR OUR STUDENTS, WHICH MEANS INCLUSION IN THIS PROCESS. WE WANT TO BE HEARD AND WE WANT TO SEE THE PROGRAM IMPLEMENTED WITH INTEGRITY, INTENTION AND THOUGHTFUL PLANNING TO BEST SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES.
WE WANT TO SEE A DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM THAT WE AND ALL OUR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES CAN FEEL PROUD OF, INCLUDED IN AND FULLY COMMITTED TO.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. I'M SO SORRY FOR ALL THE TECH PROBLEMS AND WE APPRECIATE YOUR COMMENTS.
TAKE CARE. WE SOLVE PROBLEMS IN A VARIETY OF WAYS.
NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS OUR CONSENT AGENDA.
[10. CONSENT AGENDA-7:45 pm]
IT IS A COLLECTION OF ITEMS THAT TEND TO BE ROUTINE ITEMS THAT WE USUALLY TAKE AS A BLOCK.TONIGHT, WE HAVE 11 ITEMS. THREE RELATE TO PERSONNEL AND STAFF.
ONE RELATES TO APPROVING OUR MONTHLY BILLS AND VOUCHERS.
DO I HEAR A MOTION IN A SECOND FOR APPROVING OUR CONSENT AGENDA FOR TONIGHT? I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? I WILL POINT OUT THAT THE THREE FIELD TRIPS FOR LYNWOOD APPEAR TO BE FOR THE ROBOTICS TEAM, WHICH IS QUITE AWESOME.
I THINK THAT IT'S GREAT THAT WE'RE GIVING STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE IN THESE AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS THAT AREN'T THE TRADITIONAL AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS AND GIVING THEM THIS STEM EXPERIENCE. SO.
HEARING NONE. I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED, PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE.
ANY ABSTENTIONS? AND TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA IS APPROVED.
NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS UNFINISHED BUSINESS.
[11. UNFINISHED BUSINESS- 7:55 pm]
THE FIRST ITEM UNDER UNFINISHED BUSINESS IS A SECOND READING OF OUR REVISED BOARD POLICY.DO I HEAR A MOTION IN A SECOND TO APPROVE? MOVE TO APPROVE A SECOND.
I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE. I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.
AYE. AND THE REVISED BOARD POLICY 3432 ON EMERGENCIES IS APPROVED.
NEXT IS THE SECOND READING TO ADOPT THE REVISED BOARD POLICY 3122 UNEXCUSED AND UNEXCUSED ABSENCES.
DO I HEAR A MOTION AND A SECOND TO APPROVE? I MOVE TO APPROVE.
SECOND. I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE. I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.
AYE AND THE REVISED BOARD POLICY 3122 UNEXCUSED AND UNEXCUSED ABSENCES IS APPROVED.
NEXT, WE'LL GO TO NEW BUSINESS.
[12. NEW BUSINESS- 8:00 pm]
READ. DO I HEAR A MOTION AND A SECOND TO APPROVE?[01:05:03]
MOVE TO APPROVE? SECOND. I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND.IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? I HAVE JUST A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS.
HOW ARE THE STEPS FOR OUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS FOLLOW A TEMPLATE AND WE HAVE EXPECTATIONS FOR ELEMENTARY AND THEN SECONDARY.
HOW IS THAT SET UP? SO WE HAVE CERTAIN SCHOOLS THAT HAVE TEMPLATES PROVIDED BY OCI IF THEY ARE FLAGGED FOR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT. AND SO THEY HAVE TO FOLLOW OCI TEMPLATES AND THEY HAVE DIFFERENT DUE DATES.
BUT THEY THESE SCHOOLS, FOR EXAMPLE, AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LIKE OAK HEIGHTS, ALSO USE OUR EDMONDS TEMPLATE BECAUSE IT'S MUCH MORE USER FRIENDLY WITH STAFF AND FAMILIES.
AND SO THE GOALS MAY BE A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT THAN THE GOALS THAT WE HAVE BECAUSE OCI REQUIRES THESE SCHOOLS TO WRITE THE GOALS IN CERTAIN VERY SPECIFIC WAYS AND THEY HAVE OCI COACHES THAT ACTUALLY SUPPORT OUR SCHOOL LEADERS AND STAFF TO MAKE SURE THAT HAPPENS.
AND SO, FOR EXAMPLE, OAK HEIGHTS HAS DIFFERENT KINDS OF GOALS, BUT THE PRINCIPAL AND STAFF FELT VERY STRONGLY THAT THEY REALLY WANTED A READING MATH AND A BELONGING GOAL THAT'S ALIGNED TO OUR STRATEGIC PLAN.
SO YOU'LL SEE SOME DIFFERENCES AND VARIOUS NUANCES, BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY.
THE FORM HELPS TO GET THE WORD OUT BECAUSE IT'S MUCH MORE USER AND USER FRIENDLY.
IT'S AN INWARD FACING DOCUMENT WHERE OURS IS A VERY OUTWARD FACING AS WELL AS AN INWARD FACING ONE.
SO WHEN WE GO TO A NEW YEAR OF SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS, HOW ARE PRINCIPALS AND SCHOOL TEAMS SUPPORTED TO REFLECT BACK AND DO THEY? I ASSUME THEY DO REFLECT BACK ON THE OLD PLAN AND HOW IT WENT AND KIND OF USE THAT DATA TO INFORM THE NEW.
AND WE DO THIS. WE DO EXACTLY THAT BECAUSE WE HAVE TWO TIMES TWO WINDOWS OF TIME.
THE CIP GOALS DON'T SHIFT YEAR TO YEAR THAT DRASTICALLY BECAUSE IT IS NOW A THREE YEAR CIP GOAL.
BUT THE PERCENTAGES OF GROWTH AND WHERE THEY WOULD LIKE TO BE COMPARED TO THEIR INITIAL BASELINE FROM FALL FROM THE FIRST YEAR THAT THEY IMPLEMENTED THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN DOES SHIFT.
FOR EXAMPLE, MANY SCHOOLS LAST YEAR ONLY STATED 2 TO 3% INCREASE IN SOME KIND OF ACHIEVEMENT USING SVA OR ALREADY DATA, FOR EXAMPLE.
BUT LOOKING AT CURRENT DATA, THEY REALIZED THAT THEY MADE 5% OR MORE GROWTH.
SO RATHER THAN KEEPING THE 2 TO 3%, THEY'VE NOW SHIFTED TO 5 TO 7 OR 5 TO 10%.
SO BY SPRING 2024, THEY HAVE AN ACCURATE SENSE OF HOW THE PROJECTIONS WILL GO.
AND FOR THE NEXT THREE YEARS, STARTING FROM SPRING 2024, THEY'LL USE CURRENT DATA TO BE ABLE TO SAY, NOW THIS IS OUR BASELINE, WHICH IS SPRING 2024, AND THEN THREE YEARS OUT WE WILL DETERMINE HOW MUCH GROWTH EACH THE SCHOOL WILL MAKE DEPENDENT ON WHAT KIND OF DATA SOURCE THAT THEY USE.
ANYTHING ELSE? NO, THANK YOU. DR.
I THIS IS A COMMENT, NOT A QUESTION.
I FEEL LIKE THIS YEAR'S CIPS SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS SHOW MORE BUY IN FROM OUR SCHOOLS ARE LESS SORT OF TEMPLATED AND MORE INDIVIDUALIZED FOR THE SCHOOL IN THE SITUATION AT EACH SCHOOL.
AND WE SEE A LOT MORE CONSISTENCY BOTH ACROSS OUR SCHOOLS AND ACROSS THE DISTRICT.
[01:10:09]
UP AT EVERY MEETING THAT'S POSSIBLE.YES, ABSOLUTELY. AND WE HAVE SYSTEMS AND STRUCTURES TO ENSURE THAT HAPPENS.
SO IT DOESN'T HAPPEN BY CHANCE.
IT'S ACTUALLY BUILT INTO THE REFLECT AND REVISED PROCESS.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS BEFORE WE GO FOR A VOTE? I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.
AND THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS FOR 2020 TO 2023 ARE APPROVED.
DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND? MOVE TO APPROVE.
SECOND. I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND FOR OUR HIGHLY CAPABLE PLAN FOR NEXT YEAR.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE. I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.
AYE. AND THE PLAN FOR OUR HIGHLY CAPABLE PROGRAM FOR 2020 TO 2023 IS APPROVED.
DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND MOVE TO APPROVE? A SECOND? I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HARRY NUNN. I'LL CALL FOR A ROPE.
SO EVERY FOUR YEAR LEVY CYCLE, WE HAVE A VOTER AUTHORIZATION FOR CALENDAR YEARS, 23, 24, 25 AND 26. SO THIS IS THE 2023 CALENDAR YEAR LEVEE.
WE SET THE LEVEE AMOUNT BACK IN THE SPRING FOR THE ANNUAL BUDGET PROCESS, AND IT IS BASED ON ESTIMATED STUDENTS FOR 2122, AS WELL AS AN INFLATIONARY FACTOR THAT THE STATE PROJECTS BACK IN THE SPRING.
SO ACTUAL STUDENTS ARE ALWAYS A LITTLE BIT OFF BECAUSE WE HAVE SEVERAL MONTHS LEFT TO GO AND THE INFLATIONARY FACTOR THAT THE STATE PROVIDED IN THE SPRING WAS TOO LOW.
SO THEY HAVE RESET THE INFLATIONARY FACTOR.
WE HAVE OUR ACTUAL 2122 STUDENTS RECORDED AND THEN WE USE A FORMULA AND WE COMPARE THAT FORMULA TO VOTER AUTHORIZATION.
SO VOTER AUTHORIZATION IS STILL HIGHER THAN THE FORMULA.
AND SO WE HAVE TO ROLL BACK THE AMOUNT BETWEEN VOTER AUTHORIZATION AND THE FORMULA.
THAT'S WHAT THE THIS RESOLUTION IS DOING.
SO THIS IS THIS IS THE OFFICIAL AND THIS IS WHAT WE WILL REPORT TO THE COUNTY ASSESSOR'S OFFICE.
THANK YOU, LYDIA. THAT WAS A GOOD EXPLANATION.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS OTHER THAN IT WOULD BE NICE TO SEE THE STATE LEGISLATURE PERHAPS CHANGE THAT AND ALLOW US TO BE ABLE TO COLLECT THE LEVIES THAT OUR VOTERS HAVE APPROVED.
BUT SHORT OF THAT, THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE.
SO HEARING NO OTHER DISCUSSION, I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.
AND THE RESOLUTION 22 TO 20 CERTIFICATION OF 2023 EXCESS PROPERTY TAXES IS APPROVED.
NEXT IS A SINGLE READING TO APPROVE RESOLUTION NUMBER 22 TO 21 ACCEPTANCE OF COMPLETED PUBLIC WORKS CONTRACT NUMBER Q 22 ASH ZERO EIGHT C.P.
FOUR CUTAWAY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BOILER REPLACEMENT.
DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND SUMMER MOVED? SECOND. I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE IN A SECOND.
[01:15:01]
I'D LIKE TO JUST SAY I APPRECIATE OUR VOTERS CONTINUING TO SUPPORT OUR BEING ABLE TO DO THE KIND OF REPLACEMENT OF SCHOOLS AND REPLACEMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF OUR CURRENT BUILDINGS AS NEEDED AND IMPORTANT.I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.
AYE AND RESOLUTION NUMBER 22 TO 21.
NEXT IS THE FIRST READING, SO THERE WILL BE NO ACTION ON THIS OF REVISED POLICY.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? I HAVE A COUPLE OF THINGS ON THIS THAT I JUST WANTED TO MENTION HERE.
SO I WAS IN TOUCH WITH VINCE D'AMURO, AND I ASKED HIM SORT OF WHAT HIS THOUGHTS WERE ON THIS.
AND HE IS GENERALLY SUPPORTIVE, BUT HE DOES WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT A LITTLE BIT MORE, AND I'D BE HAPPY TO SPEAK WITH HIM ABOUT IT AND SEE WHAT HE THINKS ARE AREAS THAT MIGHT BE POTENTIAL AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT.
I WOULDN'T BE COMFORTABLE VOTING ON THIS UNTIL I HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK TO HIM.
I THINK THAT IT'S VERY IMPORTANT FOR ME TO GET HIS POINT OF VIEW.
AND THEN THERE WAS ONE OTHER PIECE IN HERE.
THERE ARE SOME RESTRICTIONS, WHICH I COMPLETELY AGREE.
THERE NEED TO BE SOME RESTRICTIONS.
AND IT JUST SAYS BASICALLY THAT THE SUPERINTENDENT WILL DEVELOP THE GUIDELINES.
I, I REALLY WANT TO KNOW A LITTLE BIT MORE WHAT OUR PROCESS IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE.
I WOULD REALLY LIKE THAT TO BE LAID OUT SO THAT WE CAN UNDERSTAND IS THERE GOING TO BE AN APPEALS PROCESS? IS IT GOING TO BE PROACTIVE OR REACTIVE LIKE.
I DO WANT TO KNOW MORE WHEN THE FIRST AMENDMENT'S INVOLVED.
SO THOSE ARE MY TWO THINGS ON THAT AT THIS POINT.
IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE RECEIVE HIS FEEDBACK AS WELL SO THAT WE CAN VET THIS IS THE WAS TO RECOMMENDED POLICIES SO THAT WE CAN VET ANY CONCERNS HE MIGHT HAVE AGAINST WAS THE RECOMMENDED POLICY WHICH IS LEGALLY VETTED.
SO TO FOLLOW, I'D ALSO LIKE TO HEAR FROM THE HAWK-EYE ON THIS.
I MEAN, WE HAVE AN AWARD WINNING NEWS, BUT ARE YOU GOING TO ADDRESS THAT? I WILL SHARE WITH YOU THAT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS POLICY THAT I THAT WE'RE PROPOSING TONIGHT AND THE PROCEDURE THAT ACCOMPANIES IT.
THIS WAS DEVELOPED IN CONSULTATION WITH HAWK-EYE.
AND SO WE ARE WE PROPOSED MOST OF THE LANGUAGE WE PROPOSE IS STRAIGHT OUT OF SAID THERE ARE THERE'S ONE SUBSTANTIVE CHANGE THAT WE REALLY FEEL IS IMPORTANT TO MAKE. AND THAT REALLY HAS TO DO WITH WHAT'S CALLED PRIOR ADMINISTRATIVE REVIEW THAT WE ARE PROPOSING THAT WE PUT INTO POLICY AND PROCEDURE, THAT EXCEPT IN THOSE CASES WHERE YOU CAN DEMONSTRATE THAT WHERE AN ADMINISTRATOR HAS A DEMONSTRABLE CONCERN THAT THERE'S GOING TO BE SOMETHING THAT VIOLATES THOSE THAT LIST OF THINGS THAT YOU CAN'T YOU CAN'T DO, THEY'RE SPELLED OUT IN STATUTE, LIBEL, SLANDER, THOSE KINDS OF THINGS THAT REALLY WE WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR STUDENT PUBLICATIONS ARE NOT SUBJECT SUBJECTED TO PRIOR ADMINISTRATIVE REVIEW.
AND THAT WAS REALLY VERY IMPORTANT TO THE STUDENTS THAT THE SYSTEM BE IN AND TAKING A LOOK AT THIS POLICY AND PROCEDURE AND COMING UP WITH A DRAFT TO BRING TO YOU TONIGHT SO THAT WAS THAT WAS THERE IS A REAL SUBSTANTIVE STUDENT VOICE IN THIS POLICY AND PROCEDURE ALREADY SO.
DO THIS. HOW DO THE STUDENTS FEEL ABOUT NOT HAVING THE FIRST AMENDMENT MENTIONED IN HERE? WE STRUCK THAT WE DON'T WE DON'T MENTION IT ANYWHERE.
YEAH, THAT WAS THERE WASN'T A COMMENT ON THAT.
SO WE CERTAINLY CAN CIRCLE BACK ON THAT.
I'D BE INTERESTED IN CIRCLING BACK.
I'D JUST LIKE TO HEAR WHAT THE GUY THINKS.
WELL, AND AS A DISTRICT, WE HAVE A REAL STRONG HISTORY AND PUT IT BACK IN.
I KNOW. I WANT TO PUT IT BACK IN.
SO I WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE STUDENTS THINK ABOUT THAT.
AND WE HAVE A WE HAVE A VERY STRONG HISTORY OF THE FIRST AMENDMENT PRESS FREEDOM AWARDS.
AND SO I THINK THAT HAVING THAT REFLECTED IN THE LANGUAGE IS PROBABLY SOMETHING WE SHOULD REVISIT.
I WAS PREPARED. ANY OTHER DISCUSSION.
I JUST WANT TO SAY IT'S REALLY COME A LONG WAYS.
WHEN I FIRST STARTED ON THE BOARD.
HAWK-EYE DID NOT HAVE PRIOR REVIEW AND IT WAS QUITE CONTROVERSIAL THAT IT DIDN'T TELL THE AUDIENCE.
THE STUDENTS HAVE COMPLETE CONTROL OVER WHAT GOES INTO THE NEWSPAPER.
I MEAN, WHICH IS BASICALLY THE FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS.
[01:20:06]
SO WE'VE COME A LONG WAY.SO WE WILL WAIT TO MAKE SURE THAT DIRECTOR SMITH'S CONCERNS HAVE BEEN MET OR RESPONDED TO BEFORE WE PUT THIS ON AS A SECOND READING.
DO WE HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL PUBLIC COMMENTS, AARON? NO. OKAY.
SO NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS LEGISLATIVE UPDATE.
[14. LEGISLATIVE UPDATES]
DIRECTOR CHASE.IS THERE ANYTHING FOR US TO DISCUSS ON THAT? THE LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE MET THIS LAST WEEKEND, ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY AT LENGTH TO GO OVER THE PRIORITIES THAT HAVE BEEN SELECTED FROM 100 DOWN TO THE TEN.
AND UNFORTUNATELY, I'M SORRY, I CAN'T I WAS GOING TO READ THEM TO EVERYBODY.
I CAN'T PULL THEM UP AND I DON'T REMEMBER.
BUT THE THE IDEA WAS TO SYNTHESIZE THE TEN PRIORITIES CHOSEN THROUGHOUT THE STATE INTO A DOCUMENT THAT CAN BE SHARED THAT REFLECTS THE POSITIONS SO THAT WHEN WE LOBBY AND WHEN ANYONE LOBBIES, THEY CAN TAKE THIS DOCUMENT WITH THEM.
AND THAT HOPEFULLY IS GOING TO BE DONE WITHIN THE WEEK.
FROM THE FEEDBACK OF THE LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE THIS LAST WEEK, AND PERHAPS I'LL BE ABLE TO FIND THE PRIORITIES AND CIRCLE BACK DURING MY COMMENTS TO EVERYBODY, YOU KNOW, OF THE TEN WHICH HAS MADE IT THAT ALIGNED WITH THE REST OF THE STATE.
AND THEN ANYONE WHO WOULD LIKE TO ALSO GET THE INFORMATION CAN JUST EMAIL ME AND I CAN SET IT OUT.
NEXT WE HAVE BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS AND WE ALWAYS START WITH OUR STUDENTS.
[15. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS]
SO OHANA, WOULD YOU LIKE TO START? CAN. IS THERE A MICROPHONE SAY, DO YOU HAVE A MICROPHONE BACK THERE? OK SAY, DO YOU WANT TO GO NEXT? YEAH. DOES THIS IS WORK? SO THIS WEEK AT MOLLY TERRY'S, WE KIND OF BEEN IT'S KIND OF BEEN A STRUGGLE WITH THE SAFETY AT OUR SCHOOL WITH THE PAST WEEK OR.YESTERDAY THERE WAS A SCHOOL SHOOTING AT ST LOUIS HIGH SCHOOL IN CHICAGO AND ON SOCIAL MEDIA.
THERE WAS A STUDENT FROM MY SCHOOL THAT THREATENED TO SHOOT SOMEBODY FOR A DIFFERENT SCHOOL.
AND WE HAVE BEEN SOME OF MY FRIENDS AND I KIND OF BEEN LIKE REALLY WORRIED ABOUT OUR SAFETY AT SCHOOL AND IT JUST KIND OF BEEN HARD TO KIND OF FEEL SAFE AND SECURE BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT SCHOOL IS SUPPOSED TO BE.
BUT IT'S HONESTLY JUST REALLY HARD.
AND IT JUST LIKE KEEPS GETTING A DISTRACTION WITH MY EDUCATION AND WITH ALL MY OTHER FRIENDS, TOO, BECAUSE WE JUST THEY KEEP GETTING INTO FIGHTS IN SCHOOLS AND IT'S JUST BEEN REALLY HARD.
AND I REALLY WANT THE BOARD TO KNOW THAT I CARE ABOUT MY EDUCATION AND MY SAFETY.
BUT IT'S ALSO OUR SAFETY THAT IS MOST IMPORTANT BECAUSE IF PEOPLE DON'T FEEL SAFE AT SCHOOL, THEN.
AND IT'S JUST IT'S BEEN PRETTY IT'S JUST BEEN REALLY CHAOTIC.
SO. THANK YOU FOR SHARING. AND I'M SURE MR. SCHWAB IS GOING TO WORK WITH THE FOLKS AT THE SCHOOL TO AND THAT THERE WILL BE TEAMS TO WORK THROUGH SOME OF THESE CONCERNS.
THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THAT FORWARD, PETER.
UM, I'M NOT REALLY SURE WHAT TO SAY TONIGHT.
[01:25:01]
UM, WE HAVEN'T HAD AS, UM, MAJOR SAFETY EVENTS, BUT IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS, WE'VE BEEN HAVING A LOT OF BATHROOM VANDALISM AT MY SCHOOL AND A LOT MORE FREQUENT FIGHTS.WHILE IT'S BEEN, UM, I THINK MOSTLY MEDIATED, IT'S STILL A CONCERN FOR PEOPLE.
AND, UM, I THINK SOME STUDENTS ARE STILL PRETTY UNEASY WHEN WALKING INTO SCHOOL CAUSE.
AND THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF, UM, INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS THAT.
AND SO I THINK I WOULD BE I WOULD BE INTERESTED AS, UH, SAME WITH SAFETY AND HEARING MORE ABOUT LIKE WHAT WE'RE DOING AS A DISTRICT TO PROMOTE STUDENT SAFETY AND, UM, PROTECTING, LIKE SHE SAID, OUR DIVERSITY AND OUR FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION, BUT ALSO MAKING IT CLEAR THAT, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE TO BE, UH, RESPONSIBLE WITH THESE, UM, DECISIONS THAT WE'RE MAKING.
ALONG WITH THAT, WHAT PETER SAID, THERE'S A LOT INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS FOR TERRORISTS THAT ARE PRETTY TOXIC AND THAT TALK SO BADLY ABOUT A PERSON AND NO ONE REPORTS IT, THEY JUST KIND OF ARE BYSTANDERS.
NOW, I'VE DONE MY BEST TO REPORT IT, BUT NOTHING'S REALLY DONE.
AND THERE'S JUST LIKE SO MANY RUMORS ABOUT FIGHTS THAT KEEP GOING ALONG.
AND I'M JUST REALLY STRESSING AND CURIOUS ABOUT HOW THE BOARD IS GOING TO PROTECT US FROM THAT, BECAUSE WE USED TO HAVE POLICE OFFICERS IN SCHOOL ON OUR SCHOOL, BUT WE HAD THEM TO GO AWAY.
BUT IT'S LIKE THE TEACHERS AREN'T QUALIFIED TO LIKE, PROTECT US IN THAT WAY.
AND IT'S JUST REALLY SCARY ABOUT WHO WILL PROTECT US IN THAT MOMENT AND HOW CAN WE BE MORE COMFORTABLE AND JUST SAFE WITH OUR FRIENDS AND MAKING MEMORIES AS HIGH SCHOOL HIGH SCHOOL PEOPLE STUDENTS SHOULD.
SO I GO TO EDMONDS WOODWAY AND WE RECENTLY HAD AN INCIDENT WITH A WEAPON ON.
WAIT. IS IT WORKING OUT? OH, OKAY.
I HEARD ABOUT THE WAY THE SITUATION WAS HANDLED.
I PERSONALLY WAS NOT AT SCHOOL AT THE TIME, BUT I WAS TRYING TO GET BACK IN AND THE DOORS WERE LOCKED, BUT I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON BECAUSE IT WASN'T LIKE ANNOUNCED PUBLICLY. THEY TRIED TO KEEP IT LIKE UNDER WRAPS SO NOTHING WOULD HAPPEN.
BUT WHAT I HEARD WAS THAT THERE WERE KIDS STILL WALKING AROUND THE SCHOOL WHILE THE POLICE WERE COMING IN TO CONFISCATE THE WEAPON AND TAKE THE STUDENT WHO BROUGHT THE WEAPON INTO SCHOOL AND ALSO THE CLASSROOMS NEARBY.
I THINK THERE WERE A COUPLE OF ASL CLASSROOMS. THEY WERE NOT NOTIFIED THAT SOMETHING WAS HAPPENING AND THAT THERE WERE POLICE IN THE SCHOOL.
AND PERSONALLY, MY SISTER WAS WALKING AROUND THE SCHOOL.
SHE WAS LIKE, YEAH, I WAS IN THE BATHROOM WHEN THIS HAPPENED.
I'M LIKE, SO YOU WEREN'T IN CLASS.
YOU WEREN'T THE DOORS WEREN'T CLOSED.
AND YEAH, THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED TO HER.
AND THAT WAS KIND OF CONCERNING.
AND I GOT HOME AND I OBVIOUSLY TOLD MY PARENTS ABOUT THIS AND THEY WERE LIKE, HOW DID THEY LET THIS HAPPEN? SO THE SITUATION WAS HANDLED AND THE PERSON WAS.
KICKED OUT OF CAMPUS AND HANDLE HOWEVER IT WAS NEEDED TO.
LIKE I WAS SCARED WHEN I HEARD, BUT I'M LIKE, WAIT, THIS HAPPENED AND THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED TO EDMONTON THE WAY IT HAPPENED LAST YEAR TOO, IN THE SPRING, I THINK. AND IT'S JUST LIKE THIS WHOLE GUN VIOLENCE THING HAS BECOME LIKE A TREND.
IT'S NOT A GOOD TREND, BUT WE CAN SEE IT.
IT'S BEEN HAPPENING AND IT'S CONTINUALLY HAPPENING IN OUR DISTRICT AND IN THE COUNTRY.
AND I'M JUST HOPING THAT, LIKE I CAN CONTINUE TO GO TO SCHOOL WITHOUT.
THE FEAR OF LIKE BEING ATTACKED OR SOMEONE I KNOW A WEAPON.
AND ELIZABETH. I'M A STUDENT AT MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL, AND RECENTLY WE JUST
[01:30:06]
HAD A LOCKDOWN THAT WAS PRETTY INFLUENTIAL TO THE STUDENTS AT MEADOWDALE.IT WAS A LITTLE BIT CONCERNING KNOWING THAT WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY INFORMATION COMING IN ON WHAT WAS GOING ON, AND I UNDERSTAND THAT IN THAT MOMENT YOU WANT TO KEEP THE STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOM CALM AND COLLECTED SO THEY DON'T FREAK OUT AND MAKE CALLS, YOU KNOW, IF SOMETHING IS ACTUALLY GOING ON.
SO THEY'RE NOT LIKE ALERTING AN INTRUDER.
SO I'M TALKING TO A LOT OF STUDENTS AND THEY THE MOST THE BIGGEST CONCERN I HEAR IS LIKE, WHY IS NO INFORMATION BEING RELIED AFTER THE FACT OF LOCKDOWN? LIKE WHAT IS HAPPENING AFTER THE LOCKDOWN? WE UNDERSTAND INFORMATION THAT MIGHT NOT BE GOING OUT DURING THE MOMENT, BUT LIKE THE DAYS FOLLOWING AFTER, THERE'S NO FOLLOWING UP ON WHAT HAPPENED OR WHAT MEASURES THEY TOOK TOWARDS THE STUDENTS.
STUDENT I MEAN, PARENTS ARE JUST BEING NOTIFIED THAT THERE IS A LOCKDOWN WHICH CONCERNS LIKE FOR THEIR SAFETY, FOR THEIR STUDENTS, BUT LIKE STUDENTS THEMSELVES DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON, WHICH MAKES SENSE WHY YOU WOULDN'T WANT TO FREAK OUT THE STUDENTS IN THE CLASS.
I WANT TO BE MADE AWARE OF WHAT THE ISSUES ARE.
AND I FEEL LIKE WE COULD WORK BETTER AS A DISTRICT ON COMMUNICATING THOSE ISSUES AFTER THAT HAPPENS AND REPLYING TO LIKE THAT, NOT HAVING POLICE ON CAMPUS.
I DO AGREE THAT POLICE SERVED AS A SAFETY MEASURE, BUT I WORKED REALLY HARD WITH LIKE BSU AT MY SCHOOL AT MEADOWDALE TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS SAFETY PROTOCOLS IN IMPLEMENTED INTO THE SCHOOL, BUT THAT POLICE OFFICERS WERE REMOVED BECAUSE OF THE DANGERS OF MAYBE RACIAL PROFILING THAT THEY MADE TOWARDS STUDENTS, WHICH MAKES SENSE WHY STUDENTS WOULD WANT TO FEEL A CONCERN OF POLICE BEING ON CAMPUS, ESPECIALLY AFTER A LOT OF EVENTS THAT OCCURRED IN THE PAST FEW YEARS WITH POLICE VIOLENCE. AND PERSONALLY, I GET NERVOUS WHEN POLICE ARE AROUND IN A SCHOOL SETTING BECAUSE I THINK THAT IT'S IT'S AFFECTING MY WAY OF LEARNING BECAUSE I'M JUST NERVOUS.
LIKE, THAT'S JUST AS A PERSON OF COLOR.
I GET NERVOUS WHEN POLICE ARE AROUND AND HAVING THEM TAKEN AWAY OFF OF CAMPUS.
I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE'S A HIGHER RISK OF SAFETY CONCERN, BUT THERE'S ALSO A BETTER INFLUENCE.
AND SO I CAN GET AN EDUCATION WITHOUT HAVING TO FEEL PRESSURED OR HAVING TO FEEL LIKE I HAVE TO BE A STRAIGHT STUDENT, EVEN THOUGH I'M GOING TO JUST GET MY EDUCATION, NOT HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT IF A IF THE POLICE OFFICER ON CAMPUS IS JUST GOING TO LOOK AT ME DIFFERENTLY BECAUSE I AM A STUDENT OF COLOR.
SO I DO UNDERSTAND THE FACT THAT POLICE OFFICERS SERVED AS A SAFETY MEASURE.
BUT FOR ME PERSONALLY, AS A STUDENT OF COLOR, IT'S A BETTER SAFETY MEASURE TO HAVE THEM OFF CAMPUS BECAUSE IT MAKES ME LESS NERVOUS AND I FEEL MORE INCLINED TO GO TO CLASS AND I FEEL MORE INCLINED TO SHOW UP AND I FEEL MORE INCLINED TO NOT BE SO NERVOUS TO ACCIDENTALLY PULL IN TO LATE TO SCHOOL AND GET STOPPED BY THE POLICE OFFICERS ASKING ME WHERE I WAS GOING, WHERE I'M COMING FROM JUST BECAUSE I AM A STUDENT OF COLOR.
AND REPLYING TO SOMEBODY'S CONCERN.
MY BROTHER, WHO ATTENDED MEADOWDALE A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, IT'S MUCH DIFFERENT JUST SEVEN YEARS AGO.
MEADOWDALE HAS GROWN IN DIVERSITY AND EQUITY.
AS PRESIDENT OF LSU, I NOTICED THAT OUR CLUB IS GROWING DRASTICALLY AND BACK THEN WE HAD NO NOBODY OUTREACHING TO LATINO STUDENTS, ASKING THEM, WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL? AND SO I'M GLAD THAT MEADOWDALE IS WHERE IT'S AT NOW, FOCUSING ON NOT ONLY PROBLEMS OF EDUCATION OR WHAT OUR GPA IS OR WHAT OUR GRADE IS THIS DAY OR THAT DAY, BUT FOCUSING ON OTHER THINGS SUCH AS, ARE YOU OKAY MENTALLY? ARE YOU OKAY? AS A LATINA STUDENT IN CLASSROOM, DO YOU FEEL SAFE COMING TO SCHOOL AS A STUDENT OF COLOR, OR DO YOU FEEL SAFE DOING SUCH THINGS THAT OTHER WHITE STUDENTS MIGHT BE ABLE TO? AND HONESTLY, I THINK MEADOWDALE IS DOING MUCH BETTER THAN THEY WERE 20 OR 30 YEARS AGO, AND THEY HAVE MUCH BETTER PROGRAMS TO HELP THOSE STUDENTS OF COLOR, HELP THOSE
[01:35:04]
STUDENTS WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH MENTAL MENTAL ISSUES OR HELP THOSE STUDENTS OF THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY.SO THIS IS WHY WE HAVE STUDENT ADVISORS HERE AT OUR BOARD MEETINGS.
AFTER HEARING EVERYBODY'S PIECE, I WANTED TO SHARE MY PIECE.
I'M FROM SCHREIBER LAKE HIGH SCHOOL, AND THIS WE GOT A THREAT LAST WEEK, I BELIEVE IT WAS WEDNESDAY OR THURSDAY, AND THAT WAS THE FOURTH THREAT OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. AND MIND YOU, THIS IS WE'RE NOT EVEN TWO MONTHS IN SCHOOL.
PEOPLE WERE ON MY CAMPUS AND WE DIDN'T KNOW ANYTHING.
20 MINUTES LATER, WE GOT AN EMAIL SAYING THAT THERE WAS A THREAT IN THE BATHROOM.
MIND YOU, THIS WAS THE THIRD THREAT IN THAT BATHROOM.
AND THAT IN THAT BATHROOM THERE WAS GRAFFITI SAYING THAT THREATENING STUDENTS AND SAYING THAT THERE HAS I'M THREATENING YOU, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.
WE WERE ACTUALLY TOLD WHAT WAS SAID ON THAT BATHROOM.
BUT INSTEAD THEY TREATED IT AS IF IT WASN'T REALLY LIKE AN ACTUAL THING THAT WAS HAPPENING.
SO THEN MY CLASSMATES DIDN'T CARE, AND WE WERE SET IN A MINDSET THAT WE SHOULDN'T HAVE CARED ABOUT A THREAT THAT WAS ON OUR CAMPUS.
AND I AM AND HAVE BEEN VERY CONCERNED, BUT IT'S NOT TREATED AS A CONCERN.
DIRECTOR SMITH YEAH, I AM HAPPY TO BE BACK.
I JUST WANTED TO MAKE MENTION TO THOSE STUDENTS WHO REPORTED THE THREAT THAT HELPED US NEUTRALIZE.
I MEAN, THERE IS A REASON POST 911, THE SLOGAN WAS SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING.
THE REALITY IS THAT THAT IS OUR BEST DEFENSES.
IF PEOPLE CAN SEE IT, LET PEOPLE KNOW, GET THE SITUATION FIXED.
IT'S NOT OUR ONLY DEFENSE, BUT IT'S PROBABLY THE MOST POWERFUL.
DR. SCHWAB HAD BEEN GIVING US AN UPDATE ON SOME OF THE SECURITY THINGS THAT WE'RE DOING, AND A LOT OF THEM ARE ALSO PREVENTATIVE TYPE THINGS, STUFF WHERE STUDENTS CAN GET MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORTS AND OTHER THINGS LIKE THAT TO MAKE THEM FEEL MORE INCLUDED IN SCHOOL AS A WAY OF MAKING THEM LESS LIKELY TO DO SOMETHING TO THEIR FELLOW STUDENTS.
YOU KNOW, NOTHING'S GOING TO BE PERFECT THAT WE DO.
THERE'S NOT A SPECIAL MAGIC WAND WE CAN WAVE.
ALL WE CAN DO IS KEEP, TRY AND STUFF.
AND IT'S WHY I'VE BEEN TRYING TO WORK WITH DR.
MINOR TO REALLY MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE SOME CONSISTENT THINGS WE'RE DOING ACROSS THE DISTRICT.
AND I THINK THAT COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE DISTRICT AND THE BOARD IS VERY IMPORTANT.
SO AT LEAST WE CAN MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS AS WE'RE TRYING TO FIGURE THIS STUFF OUT.
MINOR FOR BEING SO HELPFUL IN THAT RESPECT SO THAT WE ARE KEPT INFORMED.
I AM GOING TO SAY THAT I THINK EDUCATION IS VERY IMPORTANT, BUT AT NO POINT IN MY LIFE HAS ANYONE ASKED ME TO CALCULATE THE VOLUME OF A CONE OR IF THE THEMES IN LORD OF THE FLIES REPRESENT MALE WESTERN MASCULINITY AND HOW THAT CONFLICTS WITH EASTERN THOUGHT? THE REALITY IS WHAT THEY'VE ASKED ME TO DO IS INTERACT WITH PEOPLE WHO DON'T SHARE MY VIEWS, WHO I HAVE TO TALK TO, FIGURE OUT HOW TO WORK TOGETHER, AND THEN BE JUDGED ON HOW WELL WE WORK TOGETHER.
THAT IS AN IMPORTANT SKILL AND IT'S ARGUABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILL THAT WE GIVE OUR STUDENTS.
SOMEBODY PERSON WHO OWNS A BUSINESS TOLD ME ONCE THAT HE DIDN'T.
[01:40:02]
IT'S NOT WHAT HE LEARNED IN COLLEGE.YOU KNOW, IT'S IT'S THOSE RELATIONSHIPS THAT WE BUILD.
LIKE YOU'VE GOT TO GET STARTED EARLY.
SO I HAVEN'T HAD A CHANCE TO VISIT THE SCHOOLS THAT ARE IN MY DISTRICT.
EVEN THOUGH WE'RE AT LARGE, I THINK THAT I SHOULD HAVE A SPECIAL EYE ON THEM.
SO I AM WORKING WITH THE PRINCIPALS OF THOSE SCHOOLS TO GET A CHANCE TO GO TO ALL OF THEM.
BEFORE BREAK, I HAVE USED THE EMAIL SYSTEM THIS TIME TO TALK TO THOSE PRINCIPALS.
SO WE ARE SO I'M EXCITED TO GO IN THERE.
SO I WILL BE EXCITED TO HEAR WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THAT AND GETTING A CHANCE TO JUST MEET WITH THESE SCHOOLS AND FINALLY GET A CHANCE TO TO BE OUT IN THE COMMUNITY LIKE THAT. SO THANK YOU.
DIRECTOR NOBLE? YEAH. WOULD YOU SPEAK INTO YOUR MIC SO YOU'RE BETTER HEARD.
THANK YOU. ON A MORE POSITIVE NOTE.
KATIMS AND I WERE PLEASED TO BE AT THE DEDICATION OF THE NEW SPRUCE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EARLIER THIS WEEK, AND IT WAS SUCH AN EXCITING THING.
PROBABLY 100 PEOPLE THERE ABOUT AT LEAST.
AND IT'S JUST A BEAUTIFUL SCHOOL IF YOU GET A CHANCE TO DRIVE BY IT.
IT'S SUCH AN IMPROVEMENT OVER THE VERY STRANGE SCHOOL.
AND SO JUST EXCITING TO DEDICATE A NEW SCHOOL.
I'VE SAID MANY TIMES, IF YOU WANT TO UPDATE YOUR SCHOOLS ABOUT ONCE EVERY 50 YEARS MEANS WE HAVE TO BUILD A NEW SCHOOL EVERY YEAR AND A HALF, AND WE'RE NOT DOING IT THAT FAST, BUT WE'RE GETTING THERE ONE AT A TIME.
SO THANK YOU. THANK YOU, DIRECTOR NOBLE.
THANK YOU, DIRECTOR KATIMS. FIRST, I WANT TO THANK OUR STUDENT REPS FOR SPEAKING UP TONIGHT.
I KNOW THAT THERE'S A COUPLE OF CHALLENGES WHEN YOU'RE SPEAKING IN PUBLIC, BUT YOU'RE ALSO SHARING YOUR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS, WHICH IS A VULNERABLE POSITION. AND I REALLY APPRECIATE YOU SHARING WITH US TONIGHT, PARTICULARLY ON YOUR ISSUES OF FEELING SAFE AT SCHOOL, BECAUSE THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT AT LENGTH AS A BOARD, MAINLY WITH STUDY SESSIONS AND WITH STAFF LESS SO WITH YOU.
AND I CAN SEE THAT THAT WE NEED TO BE TALKING ABOUT THIS WITH YOU.
AND I JUST WE'VE GOT THIS INFORMATION, BUT I WANT YOU TO KNOW WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT FOR PREVENTATIVE MEASURES, PROTECTIVE MEASURES, MITIGATION MEASURES, RESPONSES TO MORE EMERGENCY SITUATIONS, POST EMERGENCY RECOVERY MEASURES, THAT TYPE OF THING.
THESE ARE WHAT WE ARE ACTIVELY RIGHT NOW DISCUSSING AT THE BOARD LEVEL AND WITH ALL THE STAFF.
OUR EMPLOYEE, WHICH IS OUR SUPERINTENDENT, WILL BE HELPING US THINK ABOUT WHAT OUR NEXT STEPS IN RELATION TO WHAT YOU'VE BEEN SHARING WITH US TONIGHT, BECAUSE I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT WE TAKE THESE SCHOOL AND FEELING OF BELONGING AND SAFETY, VERY IMPORTANT.
AND I KNOW THAT IT'S. SO THAT IS ONE OF THE GOOD THINGS WE'RE DOING IN THE DISTRICT.
OH, MY GOSH. AT AND WHAT WAS FASCINATING TO ME AND JUST JUST THRILLED THAT SHOWCASING THE LIBRARY SYSTEM LIBRARIANS ARE TEACHERS OF COLOR FOUNDATION HOW WE ARE DOING ACTIVELY SEEKING TO INCREASE THE LEVEL OF DIVERSITY IN OUR STAFF AND THE SCHOOL BASED HEALTH CLINIC, WHICH IS THE FIRST ONE IN SNOHOMISH COUNTY.
AND THE INCREDIBLE HIGHLIGHTS THAT THE THINGS THAT WE ARE DOING IN EDMONDS HAS GIVEN US THE EYE OF THE GOVERNOR TO COME OUT AND GET THESE WONDERFUL UPDATES. AND SO I WAS REALLY THRILLED TO BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THAT.
AND THESE ARE THREE OF THINGS THAT THAT I'M VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT.
AND SO I WAS JUST A LITTLE BIT FANGIRL, YOU KNOW, IT WAS KIND OF FUN.
[01:45:05]
AND SO I APPRECIATE IT BEING SET UP THAT WE WERE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THAT.AND SO I'LL JUST HAND IT OVER.
I HAVE OTHER THINGS TO SAY, BUT THEY'RE NOT ALL THAT IMPORTANT TONIGHT.
I'LL TRY NOT TO BE TOO LONG WINDED, BUT I DO HAVE NOTES.
YOU WROTE YOUR REPORT? YES, I WROTE MY COMMENTS BECAUSE I ALWAYS FORGET.
SO I WAS I WAS SO THRILLED TO BE ABLE TO VISIT CEDAR ELEMENTARY LAST WEEK.
SO WAY TO GO, CEDAR WAY, EAGLES.
I ALSO GOT TO VISIT WITH THE GOVERNOR AND IN PARTICULAR I SAT IN ON THE TEACHERS OF COLOR FOUNDATION PRESENTATION. AND IF YOU'RE NOT FAMILIAR, THIS ORGANIZATION WAS FOUNDED BY A FORMER BOARD MEMBER, DIANA WHITE, WHO SERVED ON THE BOARD FOR EIGHT YEARS UNTIL 2019.
IN RESPONSE TO THE DIFFICULTY OUR DISTRICT HAS IN DIVERSIFYING OUR WORKFORCE.
AND SO CURRENTLY WE HAVE ABOUT 56% OF OUR STUDENTS ARE ASIAN, BLACK, LATINO AND OTHER STUDENTS OF COLOR, BUT ONLY 14% OF OUR TEACHERS ARE TEACHERS OF COLOR.
I AM VERY MUCH IN FAVOR OF DIVERSIFYING OUR WORKFORCE.
IF WE HAVE MORE TEACHERS OF COLOR IN THE SCHOOLS, THEY CAN UNIQUELY MOTIVATE STUDENTS BY SERVING AS ROLE MODELS, BUT ALSO THEY CAN BRING TO OUR SCHOOL TEAMS THE EXPERTISE NEEDED ABOUT THE STUDENT POPULATIONS WE SERVE.
AND I BELIEVE IN OUR STUDENTS HAVE TOLD US SO THAT HAVING MORE TEACHERS OF COLOR WILL GIVE THE DISTRICT A BETTER CHANCE OF CREATING CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE CLASSROOMS WITH IMPROVED FAMILY ENGAGEMENT.
THE FOUNDATION WORKS WITH PARA EDUCATORS AS DIRECTOR CHASE MENTIONED, WORKS WITH PEREZ AND OTHER STAFF IN OUR DISTRICT TO HELP THEM GET GET THROUGH HIGHER EDUCATION, GET THEIR TEACHING CERTIFICATION.
SO FAR THEY'VE GRADUATED EIGHT TEACHERS.
BUT IF YOU AND IF YOU THINK THAT'S A SMALL NUMBER, I LOOKED AT OUR RATES OF DIVERSIFICATION OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS. THAT'S 15% OF OUR IMPROVEMENT OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS.
SO IT'S NOT SMALL AND IT WORKS VERY MUCH.
AND SPECIFICALLY IN OUR STRATEGIC PLAN, SPECIFICALLY GOAL TWO, OBJECTIVE ONE.
RIGHT NOW, THE TEACHERS OF COLOR FOUNDATION NEEDS THE SCHOOL DISTRICT SUPPORT.
THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN DESIGNED TO BE A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE DISTRICT IN WHICH WE WOULD PROVIDE CERTAIN RESOURCES AND TEACHERS OF COLOR FOUNDATION WOULD PROVIDE OTHER CERTAIN RESOURCES. I THINK SOME OF THE DISTRICT SUPPORT HAS BEEN WITHDRAWN OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS FOR A VARIETY OF REASONS.
BUT I THINK WE SHOULDN'T LOSE SIGHT OF WHERE WE GET THE MOST BANG FOR OUR BUCK.
AND I THINK THIS IS ONE OF THOSE PROGRAMS WHERE WE'RE ACTUALLY DOING WHAT WE SAY.
YOU KNOW, WE SAY A LOT OF STUFF UP HERE, AND THIS IS ONE OF THOSE PROGRAMS WHERE WE DO WHAT WE SAY.
SO IF WE REALLY CARE ABOUT STUDENTS FEELING LIKE THEY BELONG IN OUR CLASSROOMS, THAT THEY'RE CAPABLE OF SUCCEEDING IN SCHOOL AND IN LIFE, WE KNOW THEY NEED TO SEE PEOPLE LIKE THEMSELVES WHO HAVE SUCCEEDED.
THEY NEED TO SEE THAT IT'S POSSIBLE.
AND I'D LIKE TO MAKE THIS PITCH THAT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT SHOULD WORK TOGETHER WITH TEACHERS OF COLOR FOUNDATION AND FIGURE OUT HOW TO MEET THE NEEDS WE ALL HAVE IN HELPING THEIR SCHOLARS GET THROUGH THE COMPLEX PROCESS OF GETTING TEACHING CERTIFICATION AND BRINGING IT HOME.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU, DIRECTOR KILGORE.
THERE ARE THREE THINGS THAT I WANTED TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT.
THE FIRST ONE HAS TO DO WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH TO BRING YOU UP TO DATE.
[01:50:06]
COMMUNITY. IT IS OPEN NOW AND IT WILL BE OPEN THROUGH NOVEMBER 11TH.AND I ENCOURAGE EVERYBODY TO RESPOND.
AND ALSO, AS PART OF OUR UNDERSTANDING WHAT THE COMMUNITY WANTS, IT'S ASKING YOU, WHAT DO YOU THINK IS GOING WELL IN THE DISTRICT AND WHAT DO YOU THINK IS NOT GOING WELL IN THE DISTRICT? SO IT'S IT'S LAYERED IN THAT WAY.
AND I THINK IT'S A VERY IMPORTANT WAY FOR EVERYBODY ACROSS OUR DISTRICT TO GIVE US INPUT SO THAT THE BOARD AND STAFF UNDERSTAND WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO OUR COMMUNITY IN A NUMBER OF WAYS.
THERE IS A LINK ON THE DISTRICT WEBSITE WHEN YOU GO ON.
STUDENTS, PLEASE SHARE WITH OTHER STUDENTS THROUGH YOUR VARIOUS ORGANIZATIONS.
WE WANT STUDENT INPUT AS WELL.
SO THANK YOU ALL FOR DOING THAT.
DIRECTOR NOBLE AND DIRECTOR SMITH AND I GOT TO GO TO DR.
MINER. GOT TO GO TO THE SPRUCE OPENING.
AND IN A VERY LARGE ROOM WHERE THEY PROBABLY DO CAFETERIA AND PRESENTATIONS AND MEETINGS, THERE WAS A RIBBON THAT WENT ALL AROUND THAT ROOM AND WHAT WAS WRITTEN ON IT WAS EVERY STUDENT'S NAME, AS WELL AS SOME STAFF MEMBERS WHO HAD PASSED.
IT WAS REALLY, REALLY BEAUTIFUL.
AND INSTEAD OF CUTTING ANYTHING, DR.
MINER AND I GOT TO TIE A BOW AND BRING IT TOGETHER.
AND YOU TALK ABOUT EVERY STUDENT BELONGING.
THAT IS A WONDERFUL VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF THAT.
AND AGAIN, THANK YOU TO THE VOTERS BECAUSE IT'S ONLY THROUGH THOSE BONDS AND LEVEES THAT WERE ABLE TO CREATE THESE REALLY SAFE AND STRUCTURALLY RELEVANT FACILITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS.
THE LAST THING I WANTED TO MENTION HAS TO DO WITH THE GOVERNOR'S VISIT.
SO I'M NOT GOING TO RECREATE WHAT DEBRA AND AND KAREN TALKED ABOUT.
BUT I ACTUALLY WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU THAT TIM GARGIULO, WHO IS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF WAS TO THE WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION, CALLED ME TODAY AND SAID THAT HE MONTHLY MEETS WITH GOVERNOR STAFF AND HE MET WITH THE GOVERNOR'S STAFF TODAY AND THAT THEY SAID THE GOVERNOR RAVED ABOUT THE EDMOND SCHOOL DISTRICT, THAT WE ARE SETTING AN EXAMPLE ACROSS THE STATE.
AND HE WAS SPECIFICALLY IN ESPECIALLY RAVING ABOUT THE DIGITAL LITERACY THAT WE ARE TEACHING THAT OUR LIBRARIANS ARE LEADING AND THROUGH OUR CONTENT TEACHERS AND OTHER TEACHERS.
I SEE ELIZABETH GOING, YES, ARE HELPING OUR STUDENTS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND HOW YOU TELL MISINFORMATION FROM TRUTH AND FACTS ON THE INTERNET, HOW TO EVALUATE IT, HOW TO USE IT, HOW TO RECOGNIZE WHEN YOU'RE ON A SWITCH AND BAIT AND SWITCH KIND OF THING, ALL OF THOSE KINDS OF THINGS.
AND SO THE GOVERNOR WAS REALLY EXCITED BECAUSE PROBABLY AT HIS LEVEL, HE SEES SO MUCH MISINFORMATION AND CONSPIRACY THEORIES THAT ARE AFFECTING HOW PEOPLE ARE MAKING DECISIONS INSTEAD OF KNOWING HOW TO GET THE INFORMATION THAT'S FACTUAL AND CORRECT SO THAT WHEN WE MAKE DECISIONS, THEY ARE MADE BASED ON APPROPRIATE INFORMATION.
SO WE ARE SEEN BY THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE AS DOING OUTSTANDING WORK.
AND WITH THAT BEING SAID, I'LL TURN IT OVER TO DR.
MINER. JUST BRIEFLY THIS EVENING, I REALIZED I MENTIONED AARON EARLIER.
MANY THINGS TAKE A VILLAGE, BUT A GOVERNOR'S VISIT IS NO EXCEPTION.
AND I WOULD LIKE TO JUST MANY, MANY PEOPLE ON THE STAFF AT MEADOW DALE, ON THE STUDENTS THERE, GREG SCHWAB MET STATE PATROL VERY EARLY IN THE MORNING SO THAT THEY COULD DO A SAFETY SWEEP. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, LAST TIME I LEFT OUT, WHEN I MENTIONED AARON, I LEFT OUT HARMONY, WHO WAS A TREMENDOUS PARTNER IN THE ORGANIZATION, SIDE BY SIDE WITH ME IN ORGANIZING THAT VISIT, DEVELOPING OUR PLAN FOR IT, AND THEN AFTERWARDS SHARING IT.
SO THANK YOU TO ALL OF THEM FOR MAKING THAT VISIT HAPPEN.
[01:55:04]
FAIR. THANK YOU TO ALL THE BOARD MEMBERS AND STUDENT ADVISORS FOR YOUR COMMENTS.[16. ITEMS FOR FUTURE CONSIDERATION OR INFORMATION]
I REALLY LIKE THE IDEA OF US.DOING A LITTLE DEEPER DIVE INTO [INAUDIBLE].
AND THE SIFT PROGRAM IS THE DIGITAL LITERACY THAT'S TAUGHT TO KIDS.
AND OUR HEAD LIBRARIAN HAS OFFERED TO DO IT FOR THE BOARD, WHICH I THINK IS A GREAT IDEA.
SO WHAT DIRECTOR NOBLE IS ASKING IS THAT LAST YEAR WE HAD TALKED ABOUT AS A BOARD HAVING AN EQUITY TRAINING AND WE'VE HAD THE EQUITY TRAINING OR VERSIONS OF THE EQUITY TRAINING THAT HAVE BEEN STAFF WIDE IN THE DISTRICT SO THAT WE GET THE SAME INFORMATION THAT STAFF GET.
AND I THINK THAT'S A GOOD IDEA.
WE WILL PUT THAT DOWN ON THE LIST AS WELL.
IF I WAIT LONG ENOUGH, WE MIGHT HAVE MORE TOPICS.
YOU KNOW, I WAS JUST THINKING AND I DON'T KNOW IF ALL THE BOARD MEMBERS WOULD WANT TO BE PRESENT FOR THIS, BUT MISS LOPEZ, WHAT I WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO DO IS SIT DOWN WITH YOU AND SOME OF YOUR OTHER GROUPS, THE BLACK STUDENT UNION AND WHATNOT, AND TALK ABOUT.
I'M NOT FULLY FAMILIAR WITH WHAT OUR LIAISON OFFICER PROGRAM LOOKS LIKE, BUT LIKE, IS THAT SOMETHING THAT WE CAN USE TO HELP MAYBE BUILD SOME BRIDGES BETWEEN THE COMMUNITIES OF COLOR AND LAW ENFORCEMENT? OR DO YOU THINK THAT THAT'S MORE DESTRUCTIVE? JUST THINGS ABOUT THAT.
ANYTHING ELSE FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER.
THIS MEETING IS ADJOURNED.
