NEXT IS THE SUPERINTENDENT REPORT.>> THANK YOU SO MUCH. WELL, I'M REALLY EXCITED TO REPORT THAT LAST WEEK WE FINISHED UP SUMMER SCHOOL.
I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT MOST OF THE SITES.
I'M JUST INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL TO THE STAFF WHO SERVE THOSE STUDENTS FROM ADMINISTRATORS WHO PROVIDED OVERSIGHT FOR THE SIDES, TO THE TEACHER, TO THE PARA EDUCATORS, OUR BUS DRIVERS AND THOSE WHO SERVE THE MEALS.
IT WAS SO FUN TO TALK TO SOME OF OUR STUDENTS GET TO MEET SOME OF THEM FOR THE FIRST TIME.
IT WAS A VERY JOYFUL OPPORTUNITY TO WATCH OUR STUDENTS ACQUIRE LANGUAGE, GAIN VALUABLE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS AND MAKEUP SOME CREDITS ALONG THE WAY.
WE'LL HAVE A REPORT FOR YOU TO STOP OR WORKING ON ABOUT THE NUMBERS AND HOW MANY CREDITS ARE OBTAINED ET CETERA, IN A BIT AS SOON AS THINGS GET WRAPPED UP A LITTLE BIT MORE.
BUT THAT WAS REALLY A FUN AND EXCITING THING.
I'VE BEEN ABLE TO VISIT SO FAR THE BRIAR WOODWAY, LEAWOOD AND ADMIN CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS AND INTRODUCE MYSELF TO THEM AND JUST STRESS OUR DEEP DESIRE TO COLLABORATE TO SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITIES MOST IMPORTANT TREASURE ITS CHILDREN.
I'VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY AND VERY GRATEFUL TO THEM FOR LETTING ME TALK WITH THEM.
THEN TOMORROW WE BEGIN OUR DISTRICT LEADERSHIP TEAM SUMMER LEARNING.
THIS WILL BE THE FIRST TIME WE'RE IN PERSON IN A LONG TIME, ABOUT 100 OF US.
WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A TOPIC SUCH AS, OUR STRATEGIC PLANS, SAFETY, FAMILY ENGAGEMENT.
WHAT I'M MOST EXCITED ABOUT IS WE'RE STARTING WITH A PANEL OF STUDENTS.
WE REALLY WANT TO GROUND OURSELVES IN THE EXPERIENCES OF OUR STUDENTS SO THAT WE CAN BASE OUR LEARNING, OUR REFLECTION AND OUR THINKING AND WE CAN ELEVATE THEIR VOICES AND LISTEN TO THAT AS WE THINK ABOUT OUR WORK. THANK YOU.
>> NO, THANK YOU. THAT SOUNDS GREAT.
[LAUGHTER] NEXT IS APPROVAL OF OUR MINUTES FROM PREVIOUS MEETINGS.
[7. APPROVAL OF MINUTES-6:45 pm]

>> ALL THOSE AGAINST PLEASE SAY NAY.
ANY ABSTENTIONS? THE MINUTES FROM THE JULY 19TH STEADY SESSION ARE APPROVED.
NEXT, WE HAVE TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA.
[8. CONSENT AGENDA-6:50 pm]
THE CONSENT AGENDA CONSISTS OF ITEMS THAT ARE REGULAR, ROUTINE ITEMS THAT WE WILL VOTE ON AS A BLOCK AND DISCUSSES A BLOCK.BUT IF ANYBODY WANTS TO SEPARATE OUT ANY ITEMS TO VOTE SEPARATELY, WE CAN DO THAT.
TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA CONSISTS OF 13 ITEMS. EIGHT OF THEM DEAL WITH PERSONNEL AND WITH MEMORANDUMS OF UNDERSTANDING AND AGREEMENTS BETWEEN THE DISTRICT AND OUR VARIOUS ASSOCIATIONS.
ONE OF THEM IS OUR MONTHLY BILLS AND VOUCHERS FOR JUNE AND JULY.
THREE OF THEM ARE INTER LOCAL AGREEMENT WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS AND ONE IS FOR A FIELD TRIP.
DO I HAVE A MOTION TO APPROVE TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA?
>> I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND FOR TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA.
>> I HAVE A COUPLE OF REALLY QUICK THINGS HERE.
I THINK THE FIRST ONE, IT'S JUST A TYPO ON 811.
I JUST WANT MAKE SURE THAT THERE'S NOT AN ACRONYM.
IT SAYS SNOW SUMMIT COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH HOSPITAL DISTRICT TO BBA BURDEN IS THAT JUST MUST BE A D THERE. DBA BURDEN.
>> LET ME TAKE A LOOK AT THAT.
>> [LAUGHTER] I MAKE SURE THERE WASN'T SOME ACRONYM THAT I DIDN'T KNOW.
THE OTHER THING THAT I WANTED TO BRING UP TANGENTIALLY RELATED AND PROBABLY DISCUSS AT A LATER DATE BUT 814, MOLLY TEARS HIGH SCHOOLS FOOTBALL FIELD TRIP AND THIS WOULD BE WITH WHOEVER'S IN OUR ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT.
I HAVE HEARD THAT FOOTBALL TEAM IS A LEVEL LOWER THAN THE OTHER ONES AND OUR DISTRICT AND AS A RESULT, THEY HAVE A LOT TRAVEL.
I WOULD LOVE TO TALK TO WHOEVER AN ATHLETICS JUST TO SEE WHAT THAT TRAVEL LOOKS LIKE AND HOW THAT MIGHT AFFECT THE KIDS AND STUFF.
THAT'S A FOLLOW UP FOR LATER, BUT I'D LOVE TO HAVE THAT CONVERSATION.
>> NOTICE THAT IN THIS ONE, THEY'RE ACTUALLY NOT TRAVELING.
THE FIELD TRIP IS AN OVERNIGHT THAT THEY'RE SPENDING ACTUALLY IN THE GYM AT THE SCHOOL, AND IT'S FOR BONDING.
YOU MADE AN INTERESTING POINT, BUT I THINK THAT'S INTERESTING THAT THEY'RE ACTUALLY SAVING MONEY AND THAT TIME.
BUT [LAUGHTER] CALLING IT A FIELD TRIP BECAUSE IT'S OVERNIGHT.
>> I CAN ADDRESS POTENTIALLY THE OTHER QUESTION WHICH IS, WELL, I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT STANDS FOR.
EVERYTHING I CAN FIND ABOUT BURNING HEALTH INDICATES IT IS PUBLIC HOSPITAL DISTRICT NUMBER 2 SO HOMAGE COUNTY D/B/A BURDEN HEALTH COMMISSION.
I BELIEVE THAT IS THEIR LEGAL NAME.
>> ANY OTHER DISCUSSION? DEBORAH YOU OKAY?
>> EXCELLENT [LAUGHTER] I'M HEARING NO FURTHER DISCUSSION.
LET'S TAKE A VOTE ON THE CONSENT AGENDA FOR TONIGHT.
I'M ALWAYS IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.
>> ALL THOSE OPPOSED, SAY NAY.
>> [NOISE] IN THE CONSENT AGENDA FOR TONIGHT PASSES.
[BACKGROUND] I UNDERSTAND. NEXT,
[9. PUBLIC COMMENTS-7:00 pm]
WE HAVE PUBLIC COMMENTS.THE PUBLIC COMMENTS SECTION OF THE AGENDA IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CITIZENS TO ADDRESS THE SCHOOL BOARD.
ITEMS BROUGHT FORWARD DURING THIS PORTION OF THE MEETING ARE NOT TYPICALLY ACTED UPON BY THE BOARD AT THIS TIME BUT MAY BE FOLLOWED UP BY THE BOARD, THE SUPERINTENDENT, AND/OR STAFF AT A LATER TIME.
PEOPLE MAY SUBMIT PUBLIC COMMENTS FOR A BOARD MEETING IN THREE DIFFERENT WAYS.
ONE, YOU MAY CHOOSE TO READ YOUR COMMENT ALLOWED IN PERSON, AND THAT'S EVERYBODY TONIGHT IS DOING IT THAT WAY.
[00:10:02]
TWO, PEOPLE MAY CHOOSE TO READ THEIR COMMENTS, ALLOWED VIRTUALLY IF THEY'RE NOT ABLE TO ATTEND IN PERSON, THEY MAY CHOOSE TO ALSO SUBMIT THEIR COMMENTS IN WRITING IF THAT'S WHAT THEY PREFER, AND ALL OF THOSE WRITTEN COMMENTS ON SUCH BOARD MEETINGS WILL BE ATTACHED INTO THE PUBLIC AGENDA THAT'S ON THE MINUTES.NOT ACTUALLY ON THE MEETING AGENDA, WHICH WILL BE ON THE BOARD DOCS FOREVER.
HARBOR ALONG THE BOARD DOCS EXIST [LAUGHTER] I'VE NEVER SAID THAT BEFORE.
THE BOARD ALSO ACCEPTS WRITTEN COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS AT ANY TIME THROUGH EMAIL.
WE READ EACH COMMENT AND EMAIL WE RECEIVED, AND WE TRULY APPRECIATE THE TIME AND EFFORT THAT IT TAKES FOR THOSE WHO WRITE THEM.
WHILE WE ENCOURAGE AND APPRECIATE PUBLIC COMMENTS, PLEASE LIMIT YOUR COMMENTS THAT ARE READ TO THREE MINUTES.
IF A COMMENT BECOMES TOO LENGTHY, I MAY NEED TO INTERRUPT IN ORDER TO ALLOW EACH PERSON EQUAL TIME.
FOR THOSE MAKING THEIR COMMENT IN PERSON, PLEASE SPEAK CLEARLY INTO THE MIC ABOUT THREE TO SIX INCHES AWAY IN ORDER TO BE HEARD CLEARLY.
WE ALSO ASK THAT THOSE WHO WERE MAKING PUBLIC COMMENTS DURING A BOARD MEETING, PLEASE MAKE THEIR STATEMENT IN A CIVIL MANNER.
SIMILARLY, WE ASK EVERYONE IN THE AUDIENCE TO PLEASE SHOW RESPECT FOR THOSE WHO ARE SPEAKING BY LISTENING QUIETLY WITHOUT TALKING OR WHISPERING TO EACH OTHER, SO THAT EVERYONE CAN HEAR EACH COMMENT.
TONIGHT WE HAVE SEVEN PEOPLE WHO'VE SIGNED UP.
I APOLOGIZE BEFORE HIM FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO PRONOUNCE CERTAIN NAMES.
SOMETIMES I CAN'T READ YOUR HANDWRITING, BUT BOB FRETS.
>> I RECENTLY ATTENDED ON JUNE 18TH SECOND NATIONAL HOLIDAY COMMEMORATION OF EMANCIPATION AFRICAN-AMERICANS, IN ADDITION TO MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY.
I VISITED HIS HOME AND CHURCH IN MONTGOMERY, HIS GRAVE IN ATLANTA, AND LORRAINE MOTEL IN MEMPHIS WHERE HE WAS CRUELLY ASSASSINATED.
OUR TREATMENT OF AFRICAN-AMERICANS HAS OFTEN BEEN SHAMEFUL AND CRUEL, BUT AFRICAN-AMERICANS ARE REPRESENTED IN ALL OUR OTHER HOLIDAYS.
PRESIDENT'S DAY INCLUDES OUR FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN PRESIDENT, BARACK OBAMA.
MEMORIAL DAY HONORS THOSE WHO SERVED AND DIED IN OUR ARMED FORCES.
FIVE THOUSAND BLACK SOLDIERS FOUGHT IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR.
FOUR PERCENT OF THE SOLDIERS, 9 PERCENT OF THE MAN HOURS.
TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND BLACK SOLDIERS THOUGHT WITH THE USA FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE CIVIL WAR, 40,000 OF THEM GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY.
INDEPENDENCE DAY 1776 PUT US ON A LONG COURSE TOWARD RACIAL EQUALITY WHICH BEGAN IN 1680 WHEN THE GERMANTOWN LETTER IN PHILADELPHIA BECAME OUR FIRST PUBLIC DOCUMENT TO PROTEST SLAVERY AND ONE OF THE WORLD'S FIRST HUMAN RIGHTS DECLARATIONS.1777, VERMONT BECAME THE FIRST PLACE ON EARTH TO CONSTITUTIONALLY FREE BLACK ENSLAVED PERSONS.
1780 WAS ACTUALLY THE FIRST PLACE ON EARTH TO ABOLISH SLAVERY BY LEGISLATION 1781, MASSACHUSETTS BECAME THE FIRST SIGNER TO ABOLISH SLAVERY BY A COURT DECISION.1787 THE NORTHWEST ORDINANCE CONGRESS ADMITTED ILLINOIS INDIANA, MICHIGAN, OHIO, WISCONSIN, AND PART OF MINNESOTA SLAVERY FORBIDDEN IN ALL OF THEM, 1/3 OF OUR LAND AT INDIAN AREA.
ALL 193 MEMBER COUNTRIES AND THE UNITED NATIONS HAD SLAVERY.
WE'RE NOT ALONE, UNFORTUNATELY.
LABOR DAY, THE HARD WORK AND TALENT OF AFRICAN-AMERICANS AS CRITICAL IN MAKING US [INAUDIBLE] AS THE WORLD'S ECONOMIC POWERHOUSE WHICH WE REMAIN TODAY.
VETERANS DAY CONSIDERS THE OUTSIZED NUMBER OF AFRICAN-AMERICANS IN OUR MILITARY.
AFRICAN-AMERICANS ARE 14 PERCENT OF OUR POPULATION, 17 PERCENT OF OUR MILITARY MEN, AND 29 PERCENT OF OUR MILITARY WOMEN.
THANKSGIVING, NO BLACK PEOPLE WERE PRESENT BEFORE FORMER SLAVE WAS.
SQUANTO A NATIVE AMERICAN WAS KIDNAPPED BY AN ENGLISHMAN, IN SPAIN, AND SOLD AS A SLAVE TO MONKS WHO EDUCATED HIM, TAUGHT HIM CHRISTIANITY, PROVED HIM, AND SEND HIM TO ENGLAND.
LEARNING ENGLISH, HE GOT A RIDE HOME ON A FISHING BOAT TO SADLY FIND HIS TRIBE WIPED OUT BY DISEASES BROUGHT BY EUROPEANS.
WHEN THE PILGRIMS ARRIVED, SQUANTO, THE ONLY ENGLISH SPEAKER IN HUNDREDS OF MILES WAS ON THE BEACH, AND AS ENGLISH MEN WOULD HAVE DIED, SQUANTO HAD BROUGHT THEM OUT OF A FISHING FARM IN A STRANGE LAND.
CHRISTMAS SOON AFTER THE THREE KINGS VISITED BABY JESUS, AN ANGEL APPEARED, TELLING TO TAKE HIS FAMILY TO EGYPT IN AFRICA, SINCE KING HEROD WANTED TO KILL JESUS.
ALL OF OUR HOLIDAYS HAVE AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMPONENT, NOT JUST THOSE TWO, WHICH I CERTAINLY DI NAME FOR THEM, BUT AMERICA IS THE LAND OF THE FREE BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE.
[00:15:02]
>> THANKS, BOB. NEXT, IS CATHY BATSON.
>> BEFORE I START, I JUST WANT TO SAY, I'M ACTUALLY READING THIS FOR CINDY WHITEMAN WHO IS NOT ABLE TO BE HERE.
MOST OF US ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE 16TH-CENTURY STATUE OF LADY JUSTICE THAT GREETS YOU AS YOU ENTER MOST LAW LIBRARIES.
SHE HOLDS A SCALE IN ONE HAND AND A SWORD AND THE OTHER AND A BLINDFOLD COVERING HER EYES.
THE SCALE REPRESENT IMPARTIALITY AS EVIDENCED IS WEIGHED.
THE SWORD SYMBOLIZES ENFORCEMENT AND RESPECT.
IF VISIBLE SIGN THAT JUSTICE IS TRANSPARENT AND NOT AN IMPLEMENT A FEAR OR THREAT.
THE BLINDFOLD REPRESENTS IMPARTIALITY AND OBJECTIVITY OF THE LAW AND MUST NEVER BE INFLUENCED BY POLITICS, WEALTH, OR FAME.
THE DEFINITION OF JUSTICE IS THE FAIR AND EQUITABLE TREATMENT OF ALL INDIVIDUALS UNDER THE LAW.
ANY SCHOOL DISTRICT OPENLY PROMOTE CRT OR SOMEONE HAS CRITICAL RACE THEORY.
A PROGRAM DEVELOPED UNDER THE IDEOLOGY MARXISM.
CRT IS ALSO KNOWN AND MANY OTHER NAMES SUCH AS CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE TEACHING.
TO TAKE THE ATTENTION OFF OR MAKE IT MORE PALATABLE TO WHAT IT REALLY IS.
MANY ARE FOOLED BY THIS SLIGHT SHIFT IN THE NAME AFTER ALL, IT SOUNDS GOOD, DOESN'T IT? CRT DOES NOT PROMOTE UNITY OR EQUITY IN OUR DIVERSE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
TEACHERS ARE REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAYS THAT ISOLATE STAFF BASED ON THEIR RACE.
STAFF AND STUDENTS ARE REPEATEDLY TOLD THAT IF THEY ARE WHITE, THEY ARE PRIVILEGED AND DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR RACISM.
STAFF AND STUDENTS OF COLOR ARE TOLD THEY ARE MARGINALIZED, OPPRESSED, AND SHOULD STEP INTO THE VICTIM MENTALITY.
THIS RACIST POLARIZATION OF STUDENTS AND STAFF INTO GROUPS IS FAR FROM CREATING A SAFE, SUPPORTIVE, FINDING, AND EQUITABLE ENVIRONMENT.
HAVING HONEST AND HEALTHY, BALANCED CONVERSATIONS ABOUT THE INJUSTICES THAT OCCURRED IN AMERICAN PAST AND PRESENT IS IMPORTANT AND SHOULD BE BASED ON FACTS, NOT TO STATES AND DISTRICTS, ON TEACHERS' POLITICAL AGENDAS, OR YOUR OPINIONS.
HISTORY SHOULD BE TAUGHT WITH A GOOD [INAUDIBLE] OF OUR GRADE.
WE SHOULD BE TEACHING OUR STUDENTS TO RESPECT THE CULTURES THAT EACH OF OUR ANCESTORS CAME THROUGH.
THE SACRIFICES THEY MADE, AS WELL AS WHY THEY MADE THE DECISIONS THEY DID.
PREJUDICE, BIASES AND ASSUMPTIONS MAY BE IMPLICIT IN EVERYONE'S THINKING, ESPECIALLY IN OUR MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
INSTEAD OF TEACHING VICTIMHOOD, MARGINALIZATION, OR OPPRESSION, WHICH ARE HIGHLY SUBJECTIVE TO STUDENTS AND STAFF.
LET'S FOCUS ON TEACHING FORGIVENESS, RESPECTING OTHERS BY TREATING EVERY HUMAN BEING IN A MANNER THAT WE WOULD WANT TO BE TOO, THEY'RE ADULTS.
IN DOING SO, WE WILL HAVE A HEALTHIER, HAPPIER, AND MORE SUCCESSFUL COMMUNITY OF STUDENTS AND STAFF.
THERE IS NOT A NATION THAT EXISTS THAT AS IT GROWS HAS BEEN IMMUNE TO INJUSTICES THAT HAVE OCCURRED REGARDLESS OF RACE.
UNLIKE LADY JUSTICE, CRT IDEOLOGY HOLDS A SCALE THAT IS UNBALANCED.
AMERICA IS A GREAT COUNTRY AND OUR RICHNESS IS LARGELY DUE TO THE COLORFUL HUMAN BEINGS WHO ARE HERE [APPLAUSE]
>> THANK YOU, KATHY. NEXT IS TONY SHAPIRO.
POSE A FEW QUESTIONS FOR BOARD MEMBERS.
WHAT CONSTITUTES A CIVIL AND SUCCESSFUL SOCIETY? AS OUR SOCIETY BECOME MORE STABLE, RESPECTFUL, AND HARMONIOUS OVER THE PAST 10 YEARS, HOW DOES OUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IMPACT OUR STUDENTS AND PREPARE THEM TO BECOME PRODUCTIVE MEMBERS OF OUR ECONOMY, TO BECOME HAPPY HUMAN BEINGS WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE OVERALL SUCCESS OF OUR NATION AND SOCIETY.
A CRUCIAL OVERARCHING QUESTION IS, AS A BOARD MEMBER, YOU BELIEVE A HEALTHY AND FUNCTIONING FAMILY, SOME FUNDAMENTAL BUILDING BLOCK OF SOCIETY.
IS THIS DISTRICT DOING EVERYTHING IT CAN TO BUILD THIS BELIEF? FREE SPEECH AND DIFFERENCES OF OPINION ARE INHERENT IN HUMAN NATURE, AND A HEALTHY SOCIETY NECESSITATES THE ACCEPTANCE AND WILLINGNESS TO COMMIT VIEWPOINTS OR SNIFFER.
AN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM SHOULD SUPPORT THESE OBJECTIVES, AND NOT SUBVERSIVELY INSTITUTE TEACHING METHODS WHICH RADICALLY CHANGE SOCIETAL NORMS.
[00:20:04]
FOR THIS PAST JUNE, THE FOCUS OF OUR CLASSROOMS AND SCHOOL LIBRARIES SENT A MESSAGE THAT THIS DISTRICT HAS LITTLE REGARD FOR OPINIONS THAT DO NOT EMBRACE THE GROOMING AND TRANSITIONING LIFESTYLE, WHICH IS DEPICTED AS A NORMAL AND EVEN HEALTHY ENDEAVOR FOR OUR STUDENTS.THESE TEACHINGS ARE SHROUDED FROM OUR PARENTS.
BY REMOVING AND SEPARATING PARENTS FROM THE EDUCATIONAL SEQUENCE AND THEREBY DIVIDING CHILDREN FROM THEIR PARENTS, YOU'RE FOLLOWING THE SAME METHODS UTILIZED BY NAZI GERMANY SOVIET COMMUNISTS AND TODAY'S COMMUNIST CHINESE PARTIES.
AS WE KNOW, THESE FIRST TWO SOCIETIES ULTIMATELY ENDED IN A TRAGIC TRAIL OF DEATH AND DESTRUCTION.
YET ITS THE UNITED STATES FOLLOWING CLOSELY BEHIND THE CCD? OR WILL WE CHOOSE TO CHANGE AND EMBRACE THE FUNDAMENTALS SO ELOQUENTLY STATED IN OUR DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE AND THE US CONSTITUTION.
>> THANK YOU, TONY. NEXT IS MARJORIE GREENS.
>> NEXT, AND THIS IS A NAME THAT I'M HAVING DIFFICULTY READING, BUT I THINK IT'S BEVERLY DRINKER.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO PREPARE IN WRITING.
YOU CAN JUST GET UP AND SPEAK FOR THREE MINUTES ON WHAT YOU'D LIKE TO SPEAK ON.
IT'S EVERYBODY'S CHOICE HOW THEY GO ABOUT DOING IT. ABSOLUTELY.
>> HELLO BOARD MEMBERS AND THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY.
MY NAME IS BEVERLY DRINKER AND I AM A MOM AND I'M A GRANDMA.
I JUST RECENTLY MOVED HERE TO THE STATE OF WASHINGTON IN THE PAST YEAR.
WHAT I WANT TO SAY IS THAT, IT IS REALLY CRUCIAL, NOT ONLY HERE IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON, BUT EVERY YEAR, THAT WE AS COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND MOTHERS, GRANDMOTHERS, AS I AM, TO SPEAK UP ABOUT OUR CHILDREN, ABOUT OUR GRANDCHILDREN, AND WHAT'S BROUGHT IN THE CLASSROOM, AND WHAT'S PRESENTED IN THE CLASSROOM IN THAT PARENTS STILL HAVE A RIGHT TO HAVE A SAY IN WHAT THEIR CHILDREN ARE BEING TAUGHT AND WHAT THEY'RE EXPOSED TO.
SO THAT'S WHY I CAME TONIGHT BECAUSE IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT AND REALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON AND WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE FOR OUR CHILDREN TO BE ABLE TO MAKE DECISIONS AT A LEVEL WHERE THEY'RE NOT READY TO.
I REALLY BELIEVE WHEN IT COMES TO ANY DECISION THAT A CHILD HAS TO MAKE, WE HAVE TO BE COGNITIVELY ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THAT THESE DECISIONS THAT THEY'RE MAKING ARE LIFE CHANGING DECISIONS.
I REALLY BELIEVE THAT WE NEED TO LET THE PARENTS MAKE A DECISION ABOUT WHAT THEY WANT WITH THEIR CHILDREN TO COMPLETE EDUCATION.
WHEN I SAY COMPLETE EDUCATION, I'M TALKING ABOUT THE HOLISTIC PART OF IT.
EVERY BIT OF IT, PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND SOCIAL.
WITH THAT SETTING DONE, WHEN A CHILD MAKES A DECISION AND THEY ARE NOT COGNITIVELY ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE FULL EXTENT TO THAT, THAT CAN HAVE RESIDUALS YEARS ON.
I AM JUST REALLY PUSHING THAT AS MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AND THE COMMUNITY THAT WE CAN STAND UP AND MAKE GOOD DECISIONS FOR OUR CHILDREN SO THAT THEY CAN BECOME CITIZENS PRODUCTIVE IN OUR COMMUNITY.
>> THANK YOU, BEVERLEY. NEXT IS TIMOTHY BUCKLEY.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, STAFF, AND FELLOW COMMUNITY MEMBERS, I'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE MYSELF.
MY NAME IS TIMOTHY BUCKLEY, AND I AM THE HUSBAND OF SUPERINTENDENT DR. REBECCA MINOR.
SO JUST A NOTE [LAUGHTER] OF APPRECIATION FOR ALL OF WHAT YOU DO.
WE'RE REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO HELPING CONTINUE THE GREAT MISSION OF
[00:25:01]
THE DISTRICT AND SUPPORT OF A FINE REPUTATION OF TEACHING AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENT.SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH [APPLAUSE].
>> THANK YOU SO MUCH, AND THANK YOU FOR COMING, AND IT'S VERY NICE TO MEET YOU.
WE ARE THRILLED TO HAVE YOUR WIFE WORKING WITH US, BY THE WAY.
[LAUGHTER] NEXT IS KYRIE KYLA TONY.
>> GOOD EVENING. I'D LIKE TO START, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS ABOUT A MONTH AGO THAT THIS WAS ADDRESSED, BY EXPRESSING MY SUPPORT FOR THE DISTRICTS CONTINUED DEDICATION TO INCLUSIVE SEX EDUCATION UNDER WASHINGTON STATE GUIDELINES.
AS SOMEONE WHO WAS TAUGHT BEFORE INCLUSIVE STANDARDS WERE IMPLEMENTED, I CAN STATE FIRSTHAND THAT THE EDUCATION THAT I RECEIVED AND THE SUBJECT DID VERY LITTLE TO PREPARE ME FOR THE REAL WORLD.
I KNOW OF SEVERAL FRIENDS WHO CONTRACTED STIS OR HAD UNPLANNED PREGNANCIES DUE TO THE LACK OF COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE OF AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT SUBJECT.
ESPECIALLY TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE WORLD IN WHICH WE NOW LIVE, I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW VALUABLE THIS EDUCATION WILL LEAD TO ANY FUTURE SCHOLAR.
I'M ALSO HERE TO CLARIFY SOME DEFINITIONS FOR SOME FOLKS TODAY.
THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF TALK OF PUSHING, AND I'M NOT SURE WE'RE ALL AWARE OF WHAT THAT WOULD ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE. LET ME GIVE AN EXAMPLE.
IN THE HIGH SCHOOL, I WAS TAUGHT WORLD RELIGION.
WE LEARNED BELIEFS AND HISTORY OF ALL THE WORLD'S MAJOR RELIGIONS, AS WELL AS SOME NEW AGE BELIEFS.
BUT THE THING IS AT NO POINT WAS I TOLD WHICH ONE WAS RIGHT OR WRONG.
I WAS SIMPLY GIVEN THE INFORMATION BASED ON A PRESENT REALITY AND LEFT TO COME TO MY OWN CONCLUSIONS.
THE SAME CAN BE SAID OF INCLUSIVE SEX ED, SIMPLY TELLING STUDENTS THAT FACTUALLY LGBT IDENTITIES EXIST, WHAT THEY ARE, AND THAT QUEER PEOPLE ARE EQUALLY DESERVING OF RESPECT AS ANY OTHER IDENTITY, IS NOT SETTING AN AGENDA.
ONE IN FIVE AMERICANS AGED 10 TO 25 IDENTIFY AS LGBT, AND TO ERASE THAT AS MY SEX ED COURSES DID, WE NEED TO DISREGARD OUR LIVED REALITY.
JUST IN THE SAME WAY THAT NEW LEARNING ABOUT CATHOLICISM IN HIGH SCHOOL DID NOT MAKE ME CONVERT, NEITHER WILL INCLUSIVE SEX ED FORCE ANDY TO ADOPT AN IDENTITY THAT IS NOT THEIR OWN.
THERE'S AN EXTENSIVE STUDIES BY THE CDC AND THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS DEBUNKING THE SO-CALLED SOCIAL CONTAGION THEORY, WHICH POSITS THAT STUDENTS ARE PRESSURED INTO ADOPTING LGBT IDENTITIES BY THEIR PEERS AND EDUCATORS.
WE SHOULD NOT FORM POLICY BASED ON COUNTERFACTUAL ARGUMENTS.
BUT IT BEGS THE QUESTION, WHAT WOULD PUSHING IT ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE? IT MAY LOOK LIKE FLORIDA'S CURRICULUM BEING REWRITTEN TO DENY THE FACT THAT GEORGE WASHINGTON WAS A SLAVE OWNER, DESPITE THE FACT THAT YOU CAN GO TO HIS HOME IN MOUNT VERNON AND SEE HIS WILL WHERE HE ADMITTED TO OWNING 124 HUMAN BEINGS.
TO THE KNOWN EARLIER STATING THAT STATES ABOLISHED SLAVERY BEFORE, I WOULD ENCOURAGE YOU TO READ THE 13TH AMENDMENT VERY CAREFULLY.
PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT COMES AFTER THE WORD EXCEPT.
MAYBE PUSHING AN AGENDA MIGHT LOOK LIKE THE 20TH ATTORNEY GENERAL THAT ARE CURRENTLY FLOWING THE USDA OVER IT'S FREE LAUNCH A PROGRAM THROUGH A SPECIFIC PROVISION THAT BANS DISCRIMINATION BASED ON GENDER OR SEX IDENTITY, AND THEY WANT THEIR PROVISION REMOVED.
LET ME REITERATE, NEARLY HALF OF OUR COUNTRY'S LEADING LAWMAKERS WANT TO ALLOW STATES THE RIGHT TO REFUSE ACCESS TO FOOD DURING THE SECOND RECESSION IN MY LIFETIME, TO CHILDREN WHO CANNOT PROVIDE FOOD FOR THEMSELVES PURELY BECAUSE OF HOW THEY SELF-IDENTIFY.
IT WOULD SERVE US WELL TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE.
>> [APPLAUSE] THANK YOU, KYRIE.
CHANNEL SPEAKER, MONICA WHEATON.
>> [LAUGHTER] ALL RIGHT. HI, EVERYONE.
MY NAME IS MONICA WHEATON, AND I HAVEN'T ATTENDED A BOARD MEETING IN A WHILE BUT I'VE BEEN LISTENING IN.
I KNOW MOST OF YOU AT THE BACK TABLE, GOOD TO SEE YOU, AND MOST OF YOU AT THE FRONT TABLE, GOOD TO SEE YOU.
JUST TO GIVE YOU A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY ON ME.
MY KIDS ARE NOW JUNIORS AND SENIORS AT EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT.
I WAS PRESIDENT OF THE LINDALE PTA.
I'VE BEEN RECOGNIZED BY THE STATE PTA WITH THREE GOLDEN ACORNS.
I'VE RAISED OVER THREE TO PROGRAMS THAT I'VE COORDINATED THROUGH THE DIFFERENT PTAS AND PARENT GROUPS THAT I'M A PART OF.
I'VE RAISED OVER 100,000 DOLLARS.
I SERVED AS PRESIDENT OF THE EDMONDS PARENTS LEADERSHIP GROUP TO TRY TO WORK WITH PARENT LEADERS AND ALL OF THE DIFFERENT SCHOOLS TO BE BETTER LEADERS FOR THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES.
I'VE BEEN IN THESE SCHOOLS, I'VE WORKED AS A PEER EDUCATOR, I LEAD AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS. LET'S SEE, WHAT ELSE HAVE I DONE? I'VE PROVIDED, LEADERSHIP TRAINING, PARENT TRAINING, COORDINATE PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS AT ALL LEVELS.
[00:30:01]
AS YOU CAN TELL, I'VE BEEN VERY INVOLVED.I KNOW THE STUDENTS, I KNOW THE SCHOOLS.
THE ONLY PLACE THAT STUDENTS FEEL WELCOME, AND FEEL EDUCATED, AND PART OF THE SYSTEM, IS WHAT WE NEED TO HAVE.
HAVING THESE POLICIES IN PLACE WITH THE SCHOOL DISTRICT IS WORKING ON WHERE THEY'RE RECOGNIZING STUDENTS FOR THERE DIFFERENCES, IS HUGE.
IT'S AMAZING TO SEE THE DIFFERENCE IN CHILDREN WHEN THEY FEEL SEEN BY THEIR TEACHERS, BY THEIR EDUCATORS, BY THE COUNSELORS, BY EVERYBODY IN THE SCHOOL.
BLACK KIDS, BROWN KIDS, YELLOW KIDS, EVERYBODY, THEY ALL BELONG, AND THEY ALL ADD VALUE, AND WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT.
NOT ALL OF THEM COME WITH THE SAME TOOLS IN THEIR TOOLBOX.
ONE OF THE THINGS WE NEED TO RECOGNIZE AS EDUCATORS IS HOW CAN WE HELP THEM FEEL THAT, AND SO THEY CAN BELONG? THAT IS WHY THERE ARE A LOT OF THESE PROGRAMS THAT MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THESE LAST FEW MONTHS.
I CHALLENGE YOU GUYS WHO ARE FIGHTING CRITICAL RACE THEORY TO DEFINE WHAT THAT IS.
I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT IS AND I'VE BEEN IN THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR MANY YEARS.
I KNOW YOU'RE GOING TO TELL ME THAT IT'S TEACHING RACISM, IT'S TELLING RACISTS, TELLING BLACK PEOPLE THAT THEY'RE VICTIMS, BUT THAT'S NOT TRUE AT ALL.
EVEN IN SOME OF THESE PRESENTATIONS WE'RE SAYING, AS PART OF CRITICAL RACE THEORY THAT WE NEED TO TEACH THE GOOD, BAD, AND THE UGLY OF OUR HISTORY.
THAT IS WHAT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT DOES.
THAT IS WHY WE NEED THIS TYPE OF EDUCATION.
I JUST WANT TO ASK, WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME THAT ANY OF YOU WERE INSIDE OF THE SCHOOL WHERE YOU WENT INTO THE LIBRARY, WHERE YOU WENT TO THESE CHILDREN, WHERE YOU SAW WHAT THE TEACHERS WERE TEACHING IN THE CLASSROOM? I CHALLENGE YOU TO DO THAT IF YOU'RE GOING TO COME AND SPEAK AGAINST THESE THINGS AT THE SCHOOL BOARDS. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
>> [APPLAUSE] THANK YOU, MONICA, AND THANK YOU FOR ALL THE WORK THAT YOU'VE DONE FOR THE DISTRICT OVER THE YEARS.
[LAUGHTER] NEXT ON THE AGENDA,
[10. REPORTS-7:30 pm]
WE HAVE REPORTS AND TONIGHT WE HAVE ONE REPORT THAT'S ON JUNE 2022 BUDGET REPORT, AND THANKFULLY, LYDIA SHELLY IS HERE TO HELP US UNDERSTAND IT.>> I'LL BE PROBABLY QUICK TONIGHT BECAUSE AS I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS EVENING I LOOKED AT '21 '22 AND FOR A MINUTE I JUST FLINCHED BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN IN THE '22 '23 BUDGET WORLD AND ALL THE SUDDEN I FORGOT WHAT FISCAL YEAR THAT WE ARE STILL IN, '21 '22 THROUGH THE END OF AUGUST 31ST WHEN SEPTEMBER 1ST IS THE NEW FISCAL YEAR.
LITTLE BIT OF SCHEDULING BACKGROUND.
THE JULY REPORT WILL BE PRESENTED IN SEPTEMBER.
WE CLOSE OUT AFTER AUGUST 31ST.
IT TAKES SOME TIME AND A ONE-MONTH PAYROLL CYCLE THAT SEPTEMBER.
THE ACTUAL CLOSEOUT IS DUE TO THE STATE OCTOBER 25TH, SO YOU WILL SEE THE FINAL REPORT FOR THE FISCAL YEAR '21 '22 IN EARLY NOVEMBER.
JUST A QUICK POINT OF CLARIFICATION BACKING UP TO SOMETHING DIRECTOR SMITH ASKED, SNOHOMISH COUNTY NUMBER 2 OR HEALTH DISTRICT NUMBER 2 GOES BY VERDUN.
[NOISE] IF WE BACK UP JUST A COUPLE OF SLIDES, RIGHT THERE, THAT'S PERFECT, THANK YOU.
IF I'M LOOKING, I'LL TALK ABOUT THE GENERAL FUND A LITTLE BIT MORE.
IF I'M GOING TO THE ASSOCIATE STUDENT BODY FUND, LAST YEAR, REMEMBER DURING REMOTE LEARNING OR PREDOMINANTLY REMOTE LEARNING, THERE WASN'T A LOT OF ASP ACTIVITY GOING ON SO WE ARE IN ABOUT HALFWAY, 50 PERCENT, OF OUR EXPECTED BUDGET.
WE ARE MAKING PROGRESS BOTH ON THE REVENUE AND EXPENDITURE SIDE AS WAY OF ACTIVITIES IN THE ASB FUND.
IN THE CAPITAL PROJECTS FUND, ALL PLANNED REVENUES ARE COMING IN AS ANTICIPATED AND THERE AREN'T ANY CHANGES TO THE PLAN THAT WAS SET IN PLACE, SO NO NEW LAND SALES OR MATERIAL LEASES OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT.
IN THE DEBT SERVICE FUND, OUR FINAL PAYMENT OF PRINCIPAL AND INTEREST, FOR THE YEAR IS IN JUNE, SO THE EXPENDITURE BUDGET IS COMPLETE FOR THE YEAR,
[00:35:04]
POSSIBLY A COUPLE OF $100 OF BOND TRANSFER FEES FOR PROCESSING OF BOND PAYMENTS, BUT OTHERWISE, EXPENDITURES ARE COMPLETE AND REVENUES WILL CONTINUE WITH SOME PROPERTY TAXES, SMALL AMOUNTS IN JULY AND AUGUST.I'LL GO AHEAD AND HAVE YOU SKIP ONE PAGE.
YES TO THE FIRST ONE WITH THE PIE CHARTS.
I REALIZED THAT I HADN'T REALLY DISCUSSED STATE REVENUES, PERHAPS JUST THAT THE TIMING OF WHEN STATE REVENUES COME IN.
RIGHT NOW YEAR-TO-DATE, WE'RE JUST OVER 76 PERCENT OF OUR BUDGETED STATE REVENUES WE'RE 83 PERCENT OF THE WAY THROUGH THE SCHOOL YEAR.
THE STATE DOES NOT FUND US ON A STRAIGHT LINE, OR 1/12TH EACH MONTH, THEY ACTUALLY FUND US HIGHER IN JUNE AND JULY AND MONTHS THAT DON'T HAVE HEAVY LEVY COLLECTIONS.
THE STATE FUNDS US THE SMALLEST PERCENTAGE IN OCTOBER, NOVEMBER, AND APRIL AND MAY BECAUSE THAT CORRESPONDS TO HEAVY LEVY COLLECTIONS, AND THEN THEY DO MUCH HIGHER PERCENTAGE ALLOCATED TO US IN JULY AND AUGUST.
THAT'S WHY STATE REVENUES AREN'T QUITE CLOSER TO THE 83 PERCENT BASED ON WHERE WE'RE AT THROUGH THE SCHOOL YEAR.
>> IF YOU CAN TURN TO THE LINE GRAPH, IT'S COMING UP. ONE MORE.
PERFECT. BASED ON JUNE, WE ARE STILL EXPECTING TO END A YEAR CLOSE TO WHERE WE ARE PROJECTING THE START OF THE 2023 BUDGET, WHICH IS APPROXIMATELY 26.8 MILLION TOTAL IN FUND BALANCE SO THAT THE TREND IS STILL COMING OUT THAT WAY.
JUNE WAS THE FINAL ENROLLMENT COUNT. ON THE NEXT GRAPH.
PERFECT. YOU CAN SEE THAT BLUE LINE IS A MONTHLY ANNUAL AVERAGE AND IT STAYED VERY STEADY THROUGH JUNE.
YOU SAW THE PREVIOUS YEAR IN PINK COMING DOWN A LITTLE BIT.
I WAS PLEASED TO SEE THAT OUR ANNUAL AVERAGE STAYED VERY STABLE THROUGH JUNE AND THAT WAS THE LAST ENROLLMENT COUNT.
THAT WILL WRAP IT UP FOR ENROLLMENT FOR THE YEAR.
JULY AND AUGUST WON'T CHANGE AS FAR AS ENROLLMENT GOES.
NEXT UP ON THE AGENDA IS NEXT YEAR'S '22, '23. ANY QUESTIONS?
>> ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS MONTHLY REPORT? THANK YOU. I THINK WE'RE GOOD.
THANKS, LYDIA. BUT DON'T GO VERY FAR.
[LAUGHTER] NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS OUR UNFINISHED BUSINESS,
[11. UNFINISHED BUSINESS-7:45 pm]
WHICH IS FOR US TO DO A SECOND READ AND APPROVAL FOR RESOLUTION 22-17, WHICH IS OUR 2022, '23 BUDGET.DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE?
>> I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND FOR RESOLUTION 22-17 OR 2022, '23 BUDGET.
>> I JUST WANT TO APPRECIATE ALL THE WORK THAT HAS GONE INTO PRESENTING THIS BUDGET AND THEN MANY STUDY SESSIONS THAT WE'VE DONE PRIOR TO TAKING THIS VOTE SO THANK YOU.
>> I HAD A QUESTION ON F195F PAGE 4.
SPECIFICALLY, I'D REALLY LIKE TO BETTER UNDERSTAND WHY IN THE PROJECTIONS FOR THE '25, '26 SCHOOL YEAR FOR OUR FUND BALANCE, IT LOOKS SO MUCH LOWER.
IT JUST DROPS PRECIPITOUSLY ACROSS FOR THE GENERAL FUND, IN PARTICULAR.
THERE WAS A SIMILAR TREND FOR THE SP FUND, BUT IT'S REALLY GENERAL FUND.
IF YOU COULD HELP ME BETTER UNDERSTAND THAT, I'D APPRECIATE IT.
>> WHAT THE GENERAL FUND LOOKS AT IN THE FUTURE YEARS IS, WE HAVE A PROJECTION ON ENROLLMENT.
WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE LEVY, WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT STATE FUNDING, WHICH IS NOT VERY FAR PAST '23.
WE SAY ALL THINGS EQUAL, JUST THE NORMAL ENROLLMENT CHANGES AND THE NORMAL APPORTIONMENT INCREASES.
BUT BECAUSE THE IMPLICIT PRICE DEFLATOR IS HIGHER THAN WHAT THE STATE FUNDS US,
[00:40:09]
THE F195F INDICATES THAT WE NEED TO TAKE MEASURES TO REDO THE BUDGET IN ORDER TO ADDRESS THAT CONSTANT GAP OR SHORTFALL IN FUNDING.WE WILL OF COURSE ADDRESS IT BEFORE WE GET TO THOSE YEARS.
I JUST WANT IT RECOGNIZED THAT IF WE DON'T DO ANYTHING, WE WILL GO INTO A DEFICIT OF UNBALANCE POSITION.
>> THIS IS AT LEAST PARTLY RELATED TO THE FACT THAT WHEN THE STATE INCREASES THE IPD, WHICH IS THE COST OF LIVING ADJUSTMENT BASICALLY, THAT LIKE THIS YEAR WHERE THEY RAISED IT QUITE A BIT COMPARED TO WHERE IT'S BEEN IN THE PAST, AND WE KNOW THAT DOESN'T COVER ALL OUR STAFF THAT IF IT REMAINS AT THIS LEVEL OR GOES HIGHER, THIS IS PROJECTING WHAT THAT WILL DO TO OUR BUDGET AS A RESULT OF THOSE INCREASED COSTS THAT THE STATE IS UNCOVERING FOR ALL OF OUR STAFF [OVERLAPPING].
>> THIS YEAR THE IMPLICIT PRICE DEFLATOR WAS 5.5 PERCENT.
IT COST THE DISTRICT OUT-OF-POCKET, THAT'S NOT FUNDED BY STATE SOURCES, OVER $5 MILLION.
BUT THE LOCAL LEVY DOESN'T INCREASE BY $5 MILLION NEXT YEAR SO THAT MCCLEARY COMPLICATION IS THAT THEY'RE NOT FINDING ALL THE POSITIONS AND THEY FUND FOUR AVERAGE SALARIES ACROSS THE STATE, BUT THEY DON'T FUND THE TRUE COST OF SALARIES.
>> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR DISCUSSION? THANKS, LIDDY, WE APPRECIATE ALL THE WORK THAT YOU DO ON THIS. IT'S HUGE.
>> WE UNDERSTAND THAT. SO WE'VE HEARD A MOTION AND A SECOND TO APPROVE.
WITH NO FURTHER DISCUSSION, I'M GOING TO CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.
>> AYE. RESOLUTION 22-17, THE '22, '23 DISTRICT BUDGET IS APPROVED.
WE HAVE NO FURTHER PUBLIC COMMENTS.
[13. LEGISLATIVE UPDATES]
NEXT ON THE AGENDA, WE HAVE OUR LEGISLATIVE UPDATE AND I'LL TURN IT OVER TO DIRECTOR CHASE.[NOISE] AS WE KNOW AS THE AUGUST BEGINS, WE'RE STILL IN VACATION MODE PREPARATION FOR 2023 AND LEGISLATURE, IT COMMENCES NOT ONLY FOR OSHA, BUT FOR OSPI, FOR OUR PRINCIPALS ASSOCIATIONS [INAUDIBLE] BUSINESS ASSOCIATIONS.
IN PREPARATION FOR THAT, COMING UP IS FIRST OFF FOR [INAUDIBLE] GENERAL ASSEMBLY, WHICH IS SEPTEMBER 30TH TO OCTOBER 1ST.
THIS IS WHERE ALL SCHOOL DIRECTORS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND.
BUT WE ASSIGN ONE PERSON WHO WILL BE VOTING WITH OUR DISTRICT.
THIS IS WHERE WE TAKE A LOOK AT ALL THE PLATFORM POSITIONS, AMENDMENTS TO THE LEGISLATIVE POSITIONS AND PERMANENT POSITIONS.
WHICH IN THESE POSITIONS ENABLE OUR [INAUDIBLE] STRATEGIC ADVOCACY TEAM TO ADVOCATE ON OUR BEHALF.
THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT STEP.
IT CAN SOMETIMES SEEM THAT IT'S IN THE WEEDS, BUT IT'S VERY IMPORTANT.
NOW, JUST THIS RECENTLY, THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY HANDBOOK HAS COME OUT.
I WOULD LIKE TO BRING THAT FORWARD.
I'LL FORWARD THAT TO EVERYONE IF IT HAS NOT RECEIVED IT YET BECAUSE THIS CONTAINS THE PROPOSALS THAT WE WILL BE VOTING ON IN SEPTEMBER.
I WAS JUST SCANNING THROUGH IT.
ONE OF THE PROPOSALS DID GET A DUE PASS, WHICH IS COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL SAFETY RESOLUTION, WHICH WE ACTUALLY ARE SUPPORTING ALONG WITH NORTHSHORE SEATTLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS, SHORELINE, FEDERAL WAY, AND IN EDMONDS.
I THINK THIS IS WHEN WE TALKED ABOUT MONTHS AGO.
WE'LL BE TRACKING THAT. I'M ASSUMING THAT WE'LL BE PROBABLY WANT ME TO VOTE YES TO DO THIS AMENDMENT.
I DON'T REMEMBER HOW MANY ARE ON HERE.
SORRY, I DIDN'T COUNT THEM, BUT THERE'S A NUMBER OF THEM.
I THINK THAT AS A BOARD, WE SHOULD ALL REALLY TAKE A LOOK AT AND COME BACK WITH ANY THOUGHTS THAT WE HAVE AT ONE OF OUR NEXT MEETING BEFORE SEPTEMBER 30TH.
[00:45:03]
I'M NOT SURE IF WE WANT TO GO AHEAD AND PUT THAT ON AN AGENDA SOMEWHERE SO THAT WE MAKE SURE WE HAVE A DEADLINE COMING UP TO IT SO WE CAN HAVE A DISCUSSION BECAUSE AS IT IS SOMETHING THAT WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT IN THE PUBLIC MEETING.>> KAREN, DO YOU THINK WE CAN DO THAT UNDER THE LEGISLATIVE UPDATE [OVERLAPPING] ON THE NEXT MEETING?
>> I BELIEVE WE CAN JUST EXCLUDE AND JUST PUT THERE A REVIEW.
I THINK THAT WE MIGHT WANT TO JUST SPELL OUT THAT WE VIEWED THAT.
>> AM I CORRECT THAT YOU'RE GOING TO BE OUR REPRESENTATIVE AT THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY?
>> I AM PLANNING ON ATTENDING HOWEVER EVERYONE [OVERLAPPING] IS WELCOME TO ATTEND.
>> I'M PLANNING TO ATTEND, BUT I WANT YOU TO BE THE VOTER PERSON FOR US.
>> ONE THING ABOUT THAT IS IT IS THE TWO DAYS, 26TH, AND WE CAN TRADE [OVERLAPPING] [INAUDIBLE] CREDENTIALS PERIOD [INAUDIBLE].
>> ARE ANY OF THE OTHER DIRECTORS PLANNING TO ATTEND PART OF IT?
>> YEAH, IF IT'S VIRTUAL [INAUDIBLE].
>> ALL RIGHT. I'M HOPING TO STEP IN FOR SOME OF IT, MAYBE WE CAN TALK ON THE SIDE ABOUT WHAT TIMES WILL BE [OVERLAPPING].
>> THAT SOUNDS ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL.
>> ACTUALLY THAT SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD PLAN SO WE CAN WORK OUT THE SCHEDULE SO NOBODY HAS TO BE THERE FOR TWO FULL DAYS SITTING.
>> JUST TAKE A SCAN THROUGH THE WHOLE, I'M SORRY, IT'S A 192 PAGES [LAUGHTER] [OVERLAPPING] GO THROUGH IT LINE BY LINE.
THEN ALSO, THIS IS A PUBLIC DOCUMENT.
I INVITE ANY MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC TO ALSO TAKE A LOOK AT THIS.
IT'S ON THE [INAUDIBLE] WEBSITE AND YOU JUST LOOK UNDER GENERAL ASSEMBLY.
IT'S CALLED HANDBOOK PDF 8122.
IF THERE'S ANYTHING OF INTEREST OR YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT, I WOULD BE HAPPY TO ANSWER THOSE QUESTIONS, AND IF I DON'T HAVE AN ANSWER, SOMEONE MUST DO IT.
IN ALSO PREPARATION, WE HAVE THIS HAPPENING, WE'VE ALSO THE LEGISLATIVE STRATEGIC MEETINGS THAT HAPPEN EVERY WEEK HAVE STARTED AGAIN.
THE MOST RECENT ONE WAS HOW TO ENGAGE YOUR LEGISLATORS.
THESE ARE ALL RECORDED AND THEY'RE VERY USEFUL TO GET EVERYBODY BACK IN THE MODE OF TRYING TO EFFECT SOME CHANGE AND HAVING CONNECTIONS WITH OUR LEGISLATORS.
WE ALSO KNOW THAT IN SPOKANE, THE YEARLY CONFERENCE IS HAPPENING THE 17TH AND 19TH, AND THE THEME IS BELONGING.
THERE ARE MANY. LET'S SEE WHAT WE'VE GOT.
CHECK SOME OF THE BREAKOUT SESSIONS THAT ARE HAPPENING ON THE AGENDA THERE'S LAW CONFERENCES, OPEN GOVERNMENT TRAINING, THERE ARE EQUITY IDENTITY DISCRIMINATION.
A LOOK AT FEDERAL INVOLVEMENT.
INTRODUCTION TO THE COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION EQUITY ARE SOME OF THE THEMES.
WE HAVE SOME WONDERFUL KEYNOTE SPEAKERS AND ADVANCING INCLUSION THROUGH BELONGING ARE SOME OF THE BREAKOUT SECTIONS AND TOPICS THAT ARE GOING TO BE TALKED ABOUT AT THIS.
AGAIN, I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE [INAUDIBLE] WEBSITE AND HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR INPUT, I AM NOT SURE IF I'LL BE ABLE TO MAKE IT, BUT I KNOW THAT WE WILL HAVE REPRESENTATION THERE IN NOVEMBER.
THE OTHER UPDATE WE'VE GOT, WE WERE GOING TO TALK ABOUT THERE'S ONE PROPOSAL THAT WE DID NOT GET TO DO PAST.
SO LET'S BRING THAT UP, IT'S TO TALK ABOUT SWITCHING TO EVEN YEAR ELECTIONS, BUT I THINK IT'S JUST ONE WAY THAT, LET'S SEE HOW IT PLAYS OUT AT GENERAL ASSEMBLY.
>> I CAN'T EVER TELL IF THIS IS ON OR OFF.
DOES THAT MEAN THAT AS PART OF THAT PROPOSAL, AT A CERTAIN TIME, THERE WILL BE SOME BOARD DIRECTORS IN THIS STATE WHO WILL GO EITHER TO A FIVE-YEAR TERM OR THREE-YEAR TERM TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN?
>> I'M NOT SURE. THERE USUALLY A PROVISION TO KEEP THEM THE SAME AND JUST THINGS ARE STAGGERED AND SO I'M NOT REALLY SURE HOW THAT WOULD WORK OUT.
>> MATHEMATICALLY I CAN'T FIGURE THAT OUT.
>> YEAH. [LAUGHTER] BUT I HAVE SEEN IT DISCUSSED IN THE WEEK STUFF LIKE THAT.
BUT ACTUALLY, THAT'S A REALLY GOOD QUESTION.
I SHOULD KNOW THAT OFF THE TOP MY HEAD, SO.
>> I JUST DON'T KNOW HOW THEY WOULD DO IT OTHERWISE.
>>WELL, IT'S BEEN DONE IN THE PAST, THERE'S THIS ODD STAGGERING THAT HAPPENS.
I THINK IT DOES SHORTEN OR LENGTHEN SOME OF THE [OVERLAPPING]
>> BUT I'M NOT A 100 PERCENT SURE.
>> IT'S ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT'S AS COMPLICATED AS TRYING CHANGING YOUR START TIMES FOR HIGH SCHOOLS WITH YOUR TRANSPORTATION SCHEDULE.
AS THAT TOPIC ALWAYS COMES UP AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR.
I LOOK FORWARD TO FURTHER DIVING IN AND SHARING SOME OF EXPERIENCES SINCE I'VE BEEN HERE, SINCE 15 AND SOME OF THE WORK THAT WE'VE DONE IN UNDERSTANDING HOW COMPLEX IT IS.
[00:50:07]
FEDERAL UPDATES.WE'RE GETTING SOME INTERESTING FEDERAL UPDATES THAT I'M GOING TO BE REALLY INTERESTED TO SEE HOW IT'S GOING TO IMPACT US.
I'M GOING TO GET TO FORWARD THESE MOST RECENT ONES.
SOME OF THE HOUSE LEADERS PROPOSED A FEDERAL CHILD NUTRITION AUTHORIZATION.
I HAD QUESTIONS ON HOW THAT WOULD IMPACT US.
NEW SCHOOL DISCIPLINE GUIDANCE.
UNFORTUNATELY, THE FINAL APPLICATION WINDOW FOR EMERGENCY CONDUCTIVITY FUNDS CLAUSE IS FEDERAL AND IMPLEMENTING EFFORTS TO KEEP KIDS FED ACT.
THIS IS HAPPENING ON A FEDERAL LEVEL.
I'D BE INTERESTED, I'M GOING TO SHARE THIS TO SEE FROM STAFF, IF THIS SHAKES DOWN, HOW IT'S GOING TO IMPACT US BECAUSE OFTEN I HAVE FOUND THAT OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT IS WAY AHEAD OF THE GAME ON MANY OF THESE THINGS THAT COME DOWN WITH JUST ABOUT ALL THINGS.
[INAUDIBLE] THE EFFORTS OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT RIGHT NOW.
THAT'S ALL RIGHT NOW, THINGS ARE MOVING FORWARD AND I DO ENCOURAGE ALL OF US TO TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF THE LEGISLATIVE COPY CAT NETWORKING.
THEY'RE REALLY FUN TO GO TO BECAUSE YOU CONNECT TO SOME OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARDS.
SO I THINK THAT'S IT FOR RIGHT NOW.
WE SO APPRECIATE YOUR CONTINUING TO BE OUR LIAISON AND CONTACT AND KEEPING US INFORMED.
[14. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS]
NEXT, ON THE AGENDA ARE BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS.AGAIN, I WOULD LOVE TO LOOK AT OUR STUDENTS WHO WE WILL SOON BE GETTING.
>> I THINK WE HAVE AN ORIENTATION WITH THEM.
ACTUALLY, I WAS GOING TO SAY IT'S PART OF MY COMMENTS.
WE HAVE A GREAT GROUP, THEY HAVE A WONDERFUL GROUP, VERY LOVELY GROUP.
WE'RE GOING TO ORIENT THEM [OVERLAPPING] IN A MONTH.
YEAH. I THINK THE FIRST MEETING IN SEPTEMBER, THEY'LL BE HERE AND NEARLY ALL OUR SCHOOLS ARE REPRESENTED AND IT'S ALL LIKE YEY.
GIVEN THAT WE DON'T HAVE STUDENTS NOW, ALTHOUGH WE LOOK FORWARD TO WHEN WE GET THEM, I'LL START WITH DIRECTOR SMITH.
>> ALL RIGHT. GOT A COUPLE OF QUICK THINGS HERE.
THE FIRST ONE, WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, I SAW THIS THING ONLINE AND I WISH I COULD REMEMBER THE NAME OF IT, BUT IT'S THIS IDEA THAT THE LONGER A MESSAGE BOARD THREAD COMMENT GOES ON, EVENTUALLY YOU WILL GET TO SOMEONE CALLING THEIR OPPONENTS THE NAZIS.
SO I WANT TO CONGRATULATE EVERYONE WE GOT THERE TODAY, IT TOOK A LITTLE TIME BUT WE DID IT.
I WOULD ENCOURAGE ANYONE WHO THINKS ANYTHING THE DISTRICT IS DOING IS COMPARABLE TO THE EXTERMINATION OF SIX MILLION PEOPLE.
MY EMAIL ADDRESS IS PUBLIC, PLEASE LET ME KNOW, LIMIT IT TO TWO PAGES, I WILL READ EVERY WORD, I PROMISE.
AS WE HAD A COMMENT EARLIER FROM, I BELIEVE IT WAS BOB FRETS, I WAS TALKING ABOUT CELEBRATING BLACK SOLDIERS WAS A PIECE OF WHAT IT WAS.
I JUST WAS THINKING WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, I NEVER REALLY GOT A CHANCE TO TALK ABOUT DIFFERENT GROUPS WHO ARE IN OUR MILITARY.
I'VE READ A LOT ABOUT THAT STUFF.
I'VE COME ACROSS A LOT OF REALLY COOL STORIES OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS SINCE I'VE BEEN OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL ABOUT DIFFERENT GROUPS WHO'VE DONE GREAT THINGS IN OUR ARMED FORCES.
AS OUR ARMED FORCES CONTINUE TO DIVERSIFY, I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE ALLOW THE KIDS TO SEE THAT THERE'S A LOT OF DIFFERENT FACES THERE.
I'LL JUST SHARE ONE REALLY QUICK THAT I ACTUALLY BROUGHT A LITTLE TEAR TO MY EYE WHEN I HEARD THE STORY.
DURING THE CIVIL WAR, A GROUP OF SLAVES FREED THEMSELVES FROM THE CONFEDERACY BY STEALING A BOAT AND THEY WERE ABLE TO MAKE IT PAST THE CONFEDERATE TROOPS.
THE PERSON WHO CAPTAINED THAT SHIP WAS HUGE PIECE OF BRAVERY SIR ABRAHAM LINCOLN, HE GOT TO CAPTAIN THAT CHIP FOR THE REST OF THE WAR.
IT WAS A VERY COOL STORY AND THE PART THAT CHOKED ME UP IS AT THE END OF IT, HE WENT BACK TO THE PLANTATION THAT HE HAD BEEN A SLAVE ON, AND THE OWNER HAD DIED AND THE ONLY PERSON THAT WAS LEFT WAS THE WIFE WHO HAD WHAT WE WOULD CONSIDER ALZHEIMER'S NOW.
SHE HAD NO IDEA WHERE SHE WAS OR WHAT WAS GOING ON AND IN AN ACT OF GRACE AND FORGIVENESS THAT I WOULD NOT HAVE IN ME, THAT FORMER SLAVE AND HIS WIFE CARED FOR THAT WOMAN UNTIL THE DAY SHE DIED.
THAT JUST REALLY HIT ME. ANYWAY, THERE'S A LOT OF REALLY COOL STORIES OUT THERE AND I REALLY HOPE THAT WE HAVE A CHANCE TO SHARE THOSE WITH OUR STUDENTS.
LAST THING FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T KNOW, I REFEREE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL, WE'RE GETTING UP THERE FOR SCRIMMAGES JUST NOW.
IT'S GREAT TO SEE THE KIDS OUT THERE.
THE COACHES ARE DOING A GREAT JOB WITH THE KIDS.
BEAUTIFUL WEATHER, IT'S REALLY GETTING ME BACK IN THAT MOOD FOR GETTING THE KIDS OUT THERE PLAYING AND HAVING A GOOD TIME.
SO I'M VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT. THANK YOU.
>> YEAH. I'D LIKE TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO THE ADMINS FOUNDATION FOR EVENTS PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
[00:55:01]
YESTERDAY I WAS WALKING BY ALL THE WAY MIDDLE-SCHOOL AND ALTHOUGH I'VE SEEN THEM MANY TIMES, THERE ARE NURSING NETWORK THEY OPERATE A POP-UP PANTRY THERE WHERE PARENTS DRIVE BY AND PICK UP FOOD SUPPLIES.YESTERDAY, THEY HAD A POP-UP BACKPACK DISTRIBUTION AND IT WAS REALLY GREAT TO SEE THE PEOPLE THERE LINED UP TO GET THE BACKPACKS.
IT WASN'T LIKE A BUNCH OF INDUSTRIAL BACKPACKS FOR EVERYONE, LOOKED THE SAME.
THEY HAD A WHOLE RACK OF THEM AND THEY'RE ALL COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.
SO EVERY KID GOT TO GO AND LOOK AT THE RACK AND PICK THE BACKPACK HE WANTED.
IT JUST GIVES YOU A GOOD FEELING THAT WE HAVE A FOUNDATION THAT CAN HELP US AND SUPPORT OUR KIDS THAT WAY.
THE OTHER THING IS ON AUGUST 25TH, THERE ARE TWO EVENTS AT THE COMMUNITY LIFE CENTER, WHICH IS ON SCRUBBER LAKE ROAD, VERSUS 3:00 OR 4:30, THERE'S A RECEPTION FOR OUR NEW SUPERINTENDENT.
ANY OF YOU WHO'D LIKE TO MEET HER, COME AND TALK TO HER, SEE WHAT'S GOING ON, YOU'RE WELCOME TO COME BETWEEN 3:00 AND 4:30, THAT'S AUGUST 25TH, AND YOU CAN MEET HER, TALK TO HER, GIVE HER A PIECE OF YOUR MIND, WHATEVER YOU WANT.
THEN AT 4:30, WE TRANSITION TO AN AWARD CEREMONY WHERE WE GIVE OUT OUR TEACHER AND SCHOOL-WIDE GRANTS.
I DON'T REMEMBER THE QUANTITY THIS YEAR, BUT IT WAS WELL OVER $40,000 WORTH OF GRANTS WE'RE GIVEN TO TEACHERS AND SCHOOLS.
THIS IS OUR OPPORTUNITY TO AWARD THEM AND RECOGNIZE THE TEACHERS WHO HAVE COME UP WITH CREATIVE WAYS TO HELP THEIR STUDENTS LEARN BETTER.
THANK YOU, FOUNDATION. WE APPRECIATE ALL YOUR SUPPORT.
>> THANK YOU. I WANT TO CONGRATULATE THE BOARD ON SOMETHING YOU MAY NOT UNTIL RECENTLY BEEN AWARE THAT THE ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY INSTITUTE HAS AWARDED THE EDMOND SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR A BIG CHANGE-MAKER AWARD.
I'M GOING TO READ THIS. CHANGE MAKERS ARE WORKING TOGETHER TO ADVANCE PROGRESSIVE REVENUE IN WASHINGTON STATE, APPRECIATE THE LEADERSHIP WHAT ROLE WE'VE TAKEN IN THAT AND SO CONGRATULATIONS EDMOND SCHOOL DISTRICT.
THIS AWARD FROM THE ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY INSTITUTE, THERE'S GOING TO BE A CEREMONY I THINK IN SEPTEMBER 15TH, THAT I'D BE VERY PLEASED TO ATTEND BUT IT'S OPEN DAY.
>> YES, I DID. QUITE DEFINITELY I WANT TO GO.
>> JUST TO COMMENT ON WHAT MAKES A HEALTHY SOCIETY.
ONE OF THOSE THINGS IS ACCESS TO FOOD, HOUSING, PUBLIC EDUCATION, CLEAN WATER, JOBS, AND A HEALTHY DIALOGUE AMONGST THE COMMUNITY AND RECOGNIZING THAT WE ARE NOT ALWAYS GOING TO AGREE ON THINGS, BUT WE CAN RESPECTFULLY LISTEN AND ALSO BRING UP POINTS OF CONTENTION.
I REALLY APPRECIATE THE COMMENTS YOU SAID ABOUT HOW LONG IT TAKES TO GET DOWN TO A THREAD ALSO.
WE CAN TALK ABOUT THIS AT LENGTH AS THE CONTINUING SCHOOL YEAR COMES THROUGH.
BUT I REALLY APPRECIATE THE PUBLIC COMMUNICATIONS AND THE OPPORTUNITY THAT WE HAVE FOR PUBLIC COMMENTS AT OUR BOARD MEETINGS.
I'M GLAD THAT WE'RE DOING THAT.
I KNOW THAT OPPORTUNITY IS NOT PRESENT FOR ALL SCHOOL DISTRICTS, OR ALL COMMUNITIES.
I APPRECIATE WHERE WE LIVE, SO THERE WE GO.
>> THANK YOU. DIRECTOR KILGOR?
WELL, I ALSO WANT TO WELCOME DR.
MINER. I'M SO APPRECIATIVE THAT YOU'VE CHOSEN TO JOIN US AT LEAST FOR THIS YEAR AND HELP GUIDE US THROUGH SOME POTENTIALLY ROUGH-WATERS OR NOT ROUGH, BUT IT'S COMPLICATED SOMETIMES.
WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOU'RE SITTING IN.
OBVIOUSLY I'M NOT THERE, I'M IN TEXAS WITH FAMILY.
I'M GETTING THIS LAST OPPORTUNITY BEFORE THE SCHOOL YEAR STARTS TO SPEND TIME WITH MY IN-LAWS AND MY NEPHEWS AND MY OWN CHILDREN WHICH IS MY FAVORITE THING IN THE WORLD, AS MUCH AS I LOVE ALL OF YOU.
IT IS MY FAVORITE THING IN THE WORLD JUST TO SPEND TIME WITH MY FAMILY AND SO I APPRECIATE IT.
I'M SO HAPPY THAT MY KIDS CAME UP THROUGH THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT.
[01:00:01]
THEY HAVE LEARNED A TON AND THEY ARE ALL IN REALLY GOOD SHAPE TO MAKE THEIR MARK ON THE WORLD AND I KNOW THAT THAT'S THE CASE FOR A LOT OF OUR KIDS.THAT MAKES ME VERY PROUD TO BE HERE AND CONTRIBUTE MY PART.
I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING BACK TO TOWN NEXT WEEK.
I'M GETTING BACK INTO THE SWING OF THINGS.
I KNOW IT'S GOING TO GET BUSY AS SOON AS WE START SCHOOL AGAIN SO EVERYBODY TAKE SOME TIME TO RELAX LIKE I'M DOING. THANK YOU.
>> THANKS DEBORAH. ONE THING WITH THE BOARD THAT WE DID A FEW WEEKS AGO, IS WE HAD A BOARD SELF-ASSESSMENT.
WE SPENT A HALF A DAY WITH A WSSDA CONSULTANT WHO FACILITATED IT.
WE WENT THROUGH AN EXERCISE THAT IS RESEARCH-BASED AND IS USED NATIONALLY, THAT WAS DEVELOPED IN WASHINGTON STATE BY WSSDA, THAT LINKS THE BEHAVIORS OF SCHOOL BOARDS TO STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT.
WE WERE SPECIFICALLY LOOKING FOR AREAS IN WHICH WE'RE STRONG OR AREAS THAT WE FEEL LIKE WE NEED IMPROVEMENT IN TERMS OF THOSE AREAS THAT ARE PARTICULARLY ALIGNED WITH STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT.
I WANT TO THANK EVERYBODY ON THE BOARD BECAUSE EVERYBODY WAS VERY INTENSELY INVOLVED.
WE'RE GOING TO BE FOLLOWING UP IN AN UPCOMING RETREAT TO SET OUR GOALS BASED ON THAT SELF-ASSESSMENT AND WE PLAN TO DO THAT ON A REGULAR BASIS, AND TO CONTINUE TO CONNECT THAT TO THE STRATEGIC PLAN AND THE DISTRICT GOALS.
THAT'S AN EXCITING PIECE OF OUR WORK ON THE BOARD.
LIKE I HAD MENTIONED WHEN I WAS LOOKING HERE IN THIS EMPTY AREA FOR STUDENTS, WE HAVE A NEW GROUP OF STUDENT ADVISORS WHO'VE APPLIED, WHO LOOK WONDERFUL.
WE HAVE A GREAT REPRESENTATION ACROSS JUST ABOUT EVERY ONE OF OUR SCHOOLS.
WE ARE ALWAYS EXCITED TO GET THEIR INPUT AND WE LISTEN VERY INTENTLY TO IT.
IT'LL BE FUN TO MEET THEM AND START GETTING TO KNOW THEM AND HAVE THEM BACK, HAVE THEIR VOICE AS A REGULAR THING.
SOMETHING I'VE BEEN DOING THIS SUMMER AND THIS IS ANOTHER SHOUT-OUT TO THE FOUNDATION FOR THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT, IS IN ADDITION TO WHAT GARY WAS JUST REFERRING TO, THAT OF THE SUMMER MEALS PROGRAM THAT HAPPENS EVERY DAY AND CONTINUES UNTIL AUGUST 25TH AT FIVE SITES, I BELIEVE.
I'VE BEEN GOING TO THE ONE AT THE COMMUNITY LIFE CENTER, BUT BASICALLY IT'S FREE TO ALL STUDENTS, 5-18.
THEY COME, THERE'S A PRESENTER EVERY DAY ON A DIFFERENT TOPIC.
IT'S BEEN ON HEALTH, IT'S BEEN ON SAFETY, THE LAST ONE WAS ON MUSIC.
THERE'S WONDERFUL PRESENTERS FROM THE COMMUNITY.
THEY HAVE ARTS AND CRAFTS, THEY ARE FED LUNCH.
THEN THERE'S A MOVE 60 PROGRAM WHICH IS EXERCISED.
IT'S GIVEN ME AN OPPORTUNITY TO MEET PARENTS AND KIDS IN THE DISTRICT FROM ACROSS OUR SCHOOLS.
I REALLY DO A SHOUT OUT TO THE FOUNDATION BECAUSE IT'S A REALLY OUTSTANDING PROGRAM THAT WE'RE PROVIDING FOR FREE.
IT GOES FROM 11-2 AT THE COMMUNITY LIFE CENTER.
IT'S THREE HOURS A DAY THAT PARENTS CAN GO TO COSTCO OR [LAUGHTER] JOIN THE PROGRAM, WHICHEVER THAT YOU PREFER.
SOME COME IN AND SOME GO TO COSTCO OR GO DO OTHER THINGS.
AGAIN, THE FOUNDATION IS NON-PROFIT.
IT IS A WONDERFUL ORGANIZATION IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR AN ORGANIZATION TO DONATE TO THAT HELPS SUPPORT ALL OUR KIDS.
IT'S A WONDERFUL ORGANIZATION TO SUPPORT.
I'D LIKE TO THANK KAREN FOR HER LEADERSHIP IN TERMS OF OUR GETTING THIS PARTICULAR CHANGE MAKER AWARD BECAUSE YOU'RE REALLY WHO BROUGHT THE PROPOSAL TO US.
THANK YOU FOR DOING THAT BECAUSE THAT WAS AN IMPORTANT PART OF JUST THAT WHOLE LEGISLATION THAT HELPED PROACTIVELY IMPACT. YEAH.
>> IT IS A TEAM EFFORT, BUT SOMETIMES SOMEONE TAKES A LEADERSHIP ROLE AND WE APPRECIATE THAT.
WELL THERE IS A COUPLE OF OTHER THINGS I'D LIKE TO MENTION AND THIS IS NOT TO ANY PARTICULAR SPEAKER, BUT IN GENERAL.
FIRST OF ALL, EVERYTHING YOU DO IS PUBLIC.
OUR TEACHERS TEACH TO THE STATE STANDARDS.
IF YOU'D LIKE TO KNOW WHAT THE STATE STANDARDS ARE, THEY ARE ON THE OSPI WEBSITE, THE OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION.
THEY ARE IN EVERY SUBJECT AREA, AT EVERY GRADE LEVEL.
OUR TEACHERS KNOW THEY ARE TEACHING WITH THOSE STANDARDS.
ANYTIME YOU'D LIKE TO SEE IT, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS ASK TO SEE WHAT'S BEING DONE.
WE'RE NOT DOING THINGS IN SECRET.
WE'RE DOING THINGS THAT ARE APPROVED BY
[01:05:01]
THE STATE AND ARE ACCEPTED AS BEST PRACTICE IN TEACHING AND LEARNING.IN ADDITION TO THAT, IT'S UNFORTUNATE THAT CRITICAL RACE THEORY AND CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE TEACHING HAVE THE SAME INITIALS.
THEY ARE NOT THE SAME THING, IN ANY SHAPE OR FORM.
WE'VE BEEN DOING CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE TEACHING FOR YEARS AND YEARS AND IT'S BASICALLY A SET OF STRATEGIES TO HELP OUR KIDS FEEL LIKE THEY ALL BELONG, WHICH IS PART OF OUR GOAL.
CRITICAL RACE THEORY IS A HIGHER ED CONSTRUCT THAT IS RESEARCHED AND TAUGHT IN HIGHER ED.
IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT WE DO IN THE SCHOOLS WITH OUR KID'S, PRE-K TO 12.
IF YOU LOOK IT UP AND READ THE EXPERTS, YOU'LL UNDERSTAND.
IF YOU ASK OUR TEACHERS THEY WOULD TELL ME LIKE, I DON'T KNOW WHAT CRITICAL RACE THEORY IS.
THESE ARE TWO VERY DIFFERENT THINGS.
THEY JUST UNFORTUNATELY HAVE THE SAME INITIALS.
[LAUGHTER] WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO A VERY EXCITING YEAR.
AUGUST IS THE TIME THAT THERE'S A LOT OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HAPPENING FOR EVERYBODY ACROSS THE DISTRICT.
WE'RE BRINGING IN NEW TEACHERS, NEW CLASSIFIED STAFF.
ONE OF THE THINGS I'LL ALSO WANT TO ADD, IS A HUGE THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY WHO'S BEEN ON OUR BARGAINING TEAMS DISTRICT AND ASSOCIATIONS.
BECAUSE THE FACT THAT WE WERE ABLE TO BRING YOU ALL OF THOSE MOUS TONIGHT, AND THEY'RE WONDERFUL READ THEM.
THEY'RE VERY BALANCED, THEY'RE VERY STUDENT-CENTERED, THEY KEEP US WITHIN OUR BUDGET AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
THE BARGAINING TEAMS WORKED VERY HARD TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN, TO CONTINUE TO SUPPORT OUR STAFF AND OUR STUDENTS IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE.
THANK YOU. I'LL TURN IT OVER TO DR. MINER.
>> WELL, AS YOU POINTED OUT, THERE ARE A LOT OF FIRST DAYS IN A SCHOOL YEAR AND IN SOME WAYS, THE FIRST DAY FOR THOSE OF US AT THE CENTRAL OFFICE, THE WONDERFUL FOLKS IN THE BACK, OUR FIRST DAY IS REALLY TOMORROW.
WE LAUNCH, WE'RE BACK WITH STAFF.
MANY YEARS AGO I WAS TALKING WITH A STUDENT WHO WAS COMING INTO OUR SCHOOL FOR THE FIRST TIME AND TELLING ME ABOUT HOW HE WAS GOING AND HE INDICATED HE WAS NERVOUS AND EXCITED.
WE QUICKLY COINED THE PHRASE NERVEXCITED.
I THINK I'M JOINED BY MANY PEOPLE IN THE BACK TONIGHT WHEN I SAY WE'RE NERVEXCITED FOR TOMORROW, VERY MUCH LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING BACK TOGETHER WITH OUR STAFF AND JUST LAUNCHING WHAT WE HOPE IS GOING TO BE AN AMAZING SCHOOL YEAR.
>> THEN THE LAST ITEM ON OUR AGENDA IS ALWAYS ASKING,
[15. ITEMS FOR FUTURE CONSIDERATION OR INFORMATION]
ARE THERE ANY TOPICS THAT, YOU ALL, AS BOARD OF DIRECTORS WOULD LIKE TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE SOMEWHERE COMING UP OR RECEIVE INFORMATION ON THROUGH FRIDAY MEMO.ANY NEW TOPICS. I DO WANT TO MENTION THAT OF ALL THE TOPICS WE'VE MENTIONED IN THE PAST, WE'LL BE TALKING ABOUT THEM AT THE UPCOMING RETREAT THAT WE'LL BE HAVING AND WE'LL BE CALENDARING THEM TOGETHER.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER TOPICS THAT WE HAVEN'T MENTIONED THOUGH?
>> I THINK WE'VE GOT EVERYTHING THAT I'VE THOUGHT OF.
>> ACTUALLY, I DO HAVE JUST CHECKING ON THE AS WE CAN DO FIELDS.
CHECKING ON INFILL MATERIAL WE'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT USING THE INFILL MATERIAL CHOICES.
AS TECHNOLOGY CHANGES, I MIGHT BE INTERESTED TO SEE WHAT THE LATEST RECOMMENDATIONS ARE WITH ALTERNATIVES TO [INAUDIBLE].
>> OKAY. ABSOLUTELY. WE CAN ADD THAT.
>> OKAY. THAT MIGHT BE A FRIDAY MEMO, IF THERE'S INFORMATION IN [OVERLAPPING] TERMS OF WHERE WE ARE.
IT MIGHT BE A MOOT POINT WITH WHERE WE ARE IN TERMS OF DOING FIELDS. I DON'T KNOW.
>> I'M NOT SURE THAT'S WHY IT'S LIKE, WHERE ARE WE?
>> YEAH, BUT IT'S A GOOD QUESTION.
ANYTHING ELSE? DEBORAH, DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING?
>> THAT'S GOOD. [LAUGHTER] WELL, AS ALWAYS, IF YOU THINK OF ANYTHING, JUST A SHOUT OUT, BUT WE WILL BE CALENDARING THEM AND LAYING THEM OUT AND PRIORITIZING WHAT WE'VE TALKED ABOUT BEFORE.
OKAY. THANK YOU EVERYBODY FOR COMING.
[NOISE] THIS MEETING IS NOW ADJOURNED.
