I BELIEVE IT'S AFTER; IS IT AFTER TEN YEARS, FIVE YEARS THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE? AND SO THE WAY WE'RE GOING TO DO THIS IS DR.

KATIMS WAS MENTIONING, THE NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFICATION IS THE MOST RESPECTED PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE AVAILABLE IN EDUCATION AND PROVIDES NUMEROUS BENEFITS TO TEACHERS, STUDENTS AND SCHOOLS.

IT WAS DESIGNATED IT WAS DESIGNED TO DEVELOP, RETAIN AND RECOGNIZE ACCOMPLISHED LEADERS AND TEACHERS AND TO GENERATE ONGOING IMPROVEMENT IN SCHOOLS NATIONWIDE.

THREE EDMONDS TEACHERS HAVE RECEIVED THEIR CERTIFICATION AND ANOTHER 15 RECEIVED THEIR RECERTIFICATION.

WE CONGRATULATE THEM FOR THIS ACCOMPLISHMENT, IT'S BEEN A LONG DAY AND CELEBRATE WITH THEM TONIGHT.

I'LL BE BRIEF AGAIN WHEN I REALLY THINK THE BOARD FOR YOUR SCHOOL VISITS AS WE CONTINUE TO SPRING.

TODAY WE WERE ABLE TO VISIT EDMONDS-WOODWAY HIGH SCHOOL AND VISIT A LOT OF THEIR OTHER PROGRAMS. SO IT'S JUST PRETTY AMAZING WHEN SPRING HAPPENS AND YOU SEE KIDS THAT GET READY TO GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL, BUT ALSO JUST THE PHENOMENAL PROGRAMS THAT ARE IN PLACE.

SO JUST REALLY KUDOS TO ALL STAFF AND IT'S ALSO GOING TO BE GETTING BACK TO THE TRADITIONAL NORMAL WHERE I THINK THE BOARD MEMBERS HAVE VISITED. WE SAW STUDENT ELECTIONS, SO WHICH IS ALWAYS FUN AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL IN TERMS OF THE PROMOTION AND GETTING READY FOR THAT.

ALSO, SPRING SPORTS.

WE HAVE FOUR BASEBALL TEAMS PLAYING TONIGHT, FOUR BASEBALL TEAMS PLAYING TONIGHT.

IT'S THE FIRST TIME THAT'S HAPPENED.

LOOK AT IT, DR. SCHWAB, IN THE BACK.

FOUR TEAMS FROM THE SAME SCHOOL DISTRICT ARE IN THE SEMIFINALS OF THE DISTRICT.

SO NOT ONLY THE KIDS BUT THE PARENTS THAT TAKE THEM TO EVERY PRACTICE, WASH THEIR CLOTHES AND KNOW THAT ALL TOO WELL FROM MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, BUT ALSO WORKED WITH AT NORTHWEST REGARDING METRICS FOR THE STRATEGIC PLAN AND HOPEFULLY TO GET SOMETHING TO THE BOARD HERE SOON.

SO I THINK WE'RE GETTING REALLY, REALLY CLOSE.

AND LASTLY, BEEN IN COMMUNICATION WITH DR.

MINOR IN TERMS OF THE TRANSITION.

AND OF THOSE SEVEN FIELD TRIPS, FIVE HAVE TO DO WITH SENDING STUDENTS TO ATHLETIC STATE TOURNAMENTS SO THAT THEY HAVE QUALIFIED TO GO TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT.

I'M ALSO THE PARENT OF FOUR CHILDREN WHO ATTEND SCHOOL IN THE EDMOND SCHOOL DISTRICT.

I'VE BEEN ATTENDING THESE SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS EITHER VIRTUALLY OR IN PERSON FOR THE PAST FEW MONTHS DUE TO MY JOB.

BUT TONIGHT, I'M ACTUALLY HERE TO SPEAK TO YOU AS A PARENT.

AT BOTH THE PAST TWO BOARD MEETINGS, THE PUBLIC COMMENTS HAVE LEFT ME SPEECHLESS, DISHEARTENED AND ANGRY.

I WAS SHOCKED TO HEAR MULTIPLE COMMUNITY MEMBERS COME FORWARD WITH TRANSPHOBIA.

I'M HERE TONIGHT TO MAKE SURE THAT THAT IS NOT THE ONLY PERSPECTIVE THE BOARD HEARS.

I'M HERE TO TELL MY FAMILY'S STORY AND TO SHARE HOW THANKFUL I AM FOR THE WAYS THE SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS SUPPORTED US.

THIS IS MY DAUGHTER, AIDEN.

SHE'LL BE SPEAKING IN A MINUTE.

SHE IS A SIXTH GRADER AT TERRACE PARK ELEMENTARY.

SHE IS TRANSGENDER.

WHEN AIDEN WAS BORN, WE THOUGHT SHE WAS A BOY.

BUT THANKS TO FACEBOOK MEMORIES, I KNOW THAT AS YOUNG AS 14 MONTHS, SHE OCCASIONALLY, THEN FREQUENTLY AND THEN CONSISTENTLY LET US KNOW HER GENDER BY HER TOY AND CLOTHING CHOICES, HER FRIEND CHOICES, AND EVENTUALLY BY HER WORDS.

BEFORE AIDEN TURNED FIVE, SHE ASKED TO SWITCH TO SHE HER PRONOUNS, AND SHE HAS NEVER LOOKED BACK.

AIDEN DID KINDERGARTEN THROUGH FOURTH GRADE AT LINDALE ELEMENTARY.

AS AN ANXIOUS PARENT, I MADE SURE ALL THE TEACHERS KNEW SHE WAS TRANS TO MAKE SURE WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY SURPRISING PROBLEMS. NEVER DID A PROBLEM ARISE AND NEVER DID THE STAFF BREAK ADNAN'S DESIRE FOR CONFIDENTIALITY.

BY THE TIME AIDEN SWITCHED TO THE CHALLENGE PROGRAM AT TERRACE PARK FOR FIFTH GRADE, I WAS A MUCH CALMER PARENT AND I LEFT ADEN TO TELL HER STORY ON HER OWN TIMELINE. WHEN THE STUDENTS WERE ABLE TO RETURN TO IN-PERSON LEARNING LAST SPRING, NO ONE KNEW OF AIDEN'S TRANS STATUS EXCEPT FOR HER TWIN BROTHER, WHO ALSO ATTENDS TERRACE PARK.

BUT ONLY A MONTH LATER, AIDEN FELT SO COMFORTABLE AND SUPPORTED THAT SHE TOLD HER CLOSEST FRIENDS AND THEN EVENTUALLY HER TEACHER, AND THEN FINALLY HER WHOLE CLASS.

AS I LOOK TOWARDS HER TRANSITION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL AND EVENTUALLY HIGH SCHOOL, I'M NOT AFRAID LIKE I ONCE WAS.

I KNOW HER TEACHERS WILL USE HER PRONOUNS.

I KNOW SHE'LL BE SAFE IN BATHROOMS AND LOCKER ROOMS. I KNOW SHE'LL BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SPORTS THAT SHE LOVES.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, I KNOW SHE'LL BE ABLE TO ADVOCATE FOR HERSELF AND BE HEARD.

SO IN ORDER FOR THEM TO SPEND IT OUT OF FUND BALANCE, WE HAVE TO TURN IT INTO WE HAVE TO TAKE THE CASH OUT OF THE FUND BALANCE BY USING A REVENUE ACCOUNT.

AND THAT IS WHAT IS GOING TO BE HANGING ON THE DIVERSITY, THE EQUITY TREES THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT.

SO I APPRECIATE THE ENTIRE CONVERSATIONS THAT WE'VE BEEN HAVING AS APRIL IS CELEBRATE DIVERSITY MONTH, SOME STUFF THAT'S GOING ON.

THE [INAUDIBLE] COMMITTEE MET THIS LAST WEEK AND DISCUSS THE PROPOSAL ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE THAT WE ALL DECIDED TO SUPPORT.

AND IT DID DID PASS THE COMMITTEE WITH A DO PASS THE THERE ARE TWO POSITIONS THAT ARE VERY SIMILAR.

ONE THAT WAS BROUGHT FORWARD FROM OUR COLLEAGUES UP IN OAK HARBOR CALLED CREATE MITIGATION ASSISTANCE, WHICH THEY WANT TO BE MORE SPECIFIC ABOUT FUNDING TO HELP DISTRICTS

SWITCH FROM PETROLEUM POWERED VEHICLES, FLEETS TO ELECTRIC VEHICLE FLEETS AND SPECIFIC FUNDING.

SO AS WAS [INAUDIBLE], WE'RE GOING TO MEET AND TRY TO COMBINE THESE TWO POSITIONS BECAUSE THEY'RE VERY SIMILAR AS WE DON'T WANT TO HAVE THEM AS COMPETING.

WE'LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS. OF COURSE, EVERY DISTRICT CAN BRING FORWARD WHATEVER THEY LIKE.

AND I WANTED YOU TO KNOW WHAT THE LANGUAGE ENDED UP AFTER OUR COMMENTS LAST TIME AND TO MAKE SURE THAT WE WEREN'T IMPLYING THAT STUDENTS WERE PASSIVE IN HERE.

AND IT BECAME [INAUDIBLE] WILL INITIATE AND OR SUPPORT LEGISLATION TO ENCOURAGE POLICY AND TECHNOLOGY CONDITIONAL UPON FULL FUNDING FOR GREEN BUILDING FLEET ELECTRIFICATION AND COMPREHENSIVE, CLIMATE RESILIENT OPERATION PRACTICES THAT WILL SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS LIVING AND LEARNING IN A HEALTHY AND SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT.

SO THAT'S WHAT THAT WAS THE LANGUAGE THAT WAS A DO PASS FROM OUR DISTRICT THERE.

THERE'S GOING TO BE ANY ADDITIONAL THINGS TO SUBMIT BY THIS FRIDAY AND THEN THE PLEDGE COMMITTEE WILL MEET AGAIN AND KIND OF HASH THINGS OUT TO MAKE SURE WE'RE ALL SET.

THE THIS ONCE THIS PROCESS IS DONE, THEN IT WILL BE THE ANNUAL THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY IN SEPTEMBER, WHERE ALL THESE POSITIONS WILL BE VOTED ON.

STUDENTS ARE, OF COURSE, ENCOURAGED, AND EVERYBODY'S ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE.

AND WE'LL JUST SEE SEE WHAT HAPPENS AS WE GET CLOSER.

AND THE OTHER THING IS ANNUAL CONFERENCE IS COMING UP IN NOVEMBER IN SPOKANE.

SO THEY HAVE THEY'VE DECIDED IT'S GOING TO BE IN-PERSON ONLY.

AND THERE'S RIGHT NOW A CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR BREAKOUT SESSIONS THAT I THOUGHT WE MAY OR MAY BE INTERESTED IN.

WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THESE BEFORE, AND I HADN'T REALIZED THAT THE TIMELINE HAD COME UP SO QUICKLY, AND I JUST HAD IT PULLED UP TO TELL YOU WHAT THEY WERE ON THE CALLS FOR PROPOSALS FOR BREAKOUT SESSIONS AND SOME OF THE AREAS THAT WE MIGHT ENCOMPASS COULD BE VISIONARY LEADERSHIP, EFFECTIVE GOVERNANCE, STRATEGIC ADVOCACY, EDUCATIONAL EQUITY, STUDENT SUCCESS AND STUDENT WELL-BEING.

OUR DISTRICT HAS DONE EQUITY BASED PRESENTATIONS IN THE PAST, AND I DID INVITE EVERYONE TO THINK ABOUT IF WE WOULD LIKE TO DO A BREAKOUT SESSION OR SUBMIT A PROPOSAL. THE SUBMISSION PROPOSAL WINDOW IS MAY 27TH IS THE DEADLINE.

SO WE'VE GOT JUST A LITTLE BIT OF TIME, BUT I THINK THAT MIGHT BE SOMETHING FOR US TO REFLECT UPON TO MAKE SURE WE'RE IF THERE'S SOME INTEREST, WE COULD CONNECT AND SEE WHAT A PROPOSAL WOULD LOOK LIKE ON THAT, ON SUBMITTED A PROPOSAL.

AND THE LAST PART IS DISTRICT AREA ONE, WHICH IS US SNOHOMISH COUNTY UP TO CANADA.

THEY'RE HAVING THEIR MEETING IN [INAUDIBLE] MAY 24TH.

IN THE EXPLORERS CLASS, IT'S AN ENGLISH CLASS.

A COUPLE OF THE KIDS IN THERE ARE WORKING ON SONG LYRICS AND AND AND PERHAPS EVEN FULL SONGS.

AND I JUST THINK THOSE ARE VERY EXCITING PROJECTS.

WHAT MAKES THEM EXCITING IS THAT THEY'RE HANDS ON THEIR PROJECTS.

THEY'RE NOT JUST READING A BOOK AND ANSWERING MULTIPLE CHOICE.

AND THAT'S THE KIND OF THING THAT WE SEE ALL OVER THE DISTRICT A LOT OF THE TIME.

AND I ALWAYS APPRECIATE THAT.

MY ONE SON IS GRADUATING COLLEGE.

MY YOUNGER SON ALSO WAS INVOLVED.

I GUESS THEY'VE BEEN TAKING AP TESTS THIS WEEK AND SO HE WAS INVOLVED IN THAT YESTERDAY.

HE'S INVOLVED IN DRIVING SCHOOL RIGHT NOW.

SO FAR, NO ACCIDENTS, BUT HE'S DRIVING HOME FROM SCHOOL WITH ME.

AND SO, AGAIN, I GUESS THE THEME AND I HAVE TO SAY THIS IS TOTALLY BESIDE THE POINT BUT GO SOUNDERS THEY WON CONCACAF THIS WEEK WHICH IS A HUGE, HUGE DEAL.

THEY GROW UP AS BOYS AND THEY'RE COMFORTABLE.

SAME WITH GIRLS.

AND FOR THEM.

LIFE TREATS THEM VERY WELL BECAUSE THERE ARE NO QUESTIONS THEY FIT IN A TRADITIONAL ROLE.

OUR CONCERN IS A BOARD IS TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL THE STUDENTS WHO DON'T FIT THOSE TRADITIONAL ROLES, FOR WHATEVER REASON, ALSO FEEL LIKE THEY BELONG AND ARE RESPECTED.

I DON'T KNOW OF ANY BOY OR GIRL WHO'S BEEN BULLIED OR HARASSED BECAUSE THEY WERE BORN A BOY OR GIRL.

GREW UP THAT WAY. IDENTIFIED THAT WAY.

BUT I KNOW OF A LOT OF STUDENTS AND I'VE BEEN SENT EMAILS AFTER SEVERAL OF OUR MEETINGS FROM FORMER STUDENTS WHO ARE TRANSGENDER, WHO TALKED ABOUT HOW DIFFICULT IT WAS FOR THEM TO.

BE ABLE IN SCHOOL TO BE WHO THEY REALLY ARE.

AND THEY REALLY.

ONE PERSON IN PARTICULAR POINTED OUT THAT IF HE ONLY HAD HAD THE KIND OF SUPPORT AND ENVIRONMENT THAT WE'RE TRYING TO CREATE RIGHT NOW.

HE WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO.

BE MUCH MORE FUNCTIONAL IN LIFE, MUCH, MUCH YOUNGER THAN HE WAS ABLE TO.

AND THAT NOW IS AS A GROWN ADULT HE'S ABLE TO, BUT THAT HE DID NOT HAVE THE KIND OF SUPPORT.

AND CARING THAT WE'RE TRYING AS A BOARD NOW TO OFFER STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT TREATED WITH THE KIND OF RESPECT THAT EVERY OTHER STUDENT IS TREATED BECAUSE THEY ARE DIFFERENT IN SOME WAY.

AND I ALSO WANT TO AGAIN CONGRATULATE ALL THE NATIONAL BOARD TEACHERS BECAUSE THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS, IT'S IT'S A LOT OF WORK FOR THEM TO EARN THAT CERTIFICATION AND THEY DESERVE IT.

SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THEY KNOW.

WE REALLY APPRECIATE THAT.

AND I JUST WANT TO JUST REITERATE IN TERMS OF THE THE NO REDUCTION OF FORCE, I KNOW THAT WE GOT DOWN TO JUST OVER TEN FTE THAT WE WERE LOOKING TO HAVE TO HAVE A REDUCTION IN FORCE RESOLUTION.

WE BROUGHT FORWARD TO THE BOARD AND WORKING WITH OUR HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT THAT WORKED VERY, VERY HARD TO TRY AND PLAN PLACEMENTS.

AND TYPICALLY WE HAVE WE HIRE ANYWHERE BETWEEN 100-125 TEACHERS EVERY YEAR, NEW TEACHERS EVERY YEAR.

AND SO WE'VE ONLY HAD 25 RESIGNATIONS OR RETIREMENTS AS OF LAST WEEK OR SO.

SO WE KNOW THAT'S GOING TO PICK UP AND WE'RE GOING TO BE PLACING PEOPLE POSITION BY POSITION WHENEVER POSSIBLE AND ALSO CREATING SOME ACTION PLANS FOR THOSE POSITIONS THAT IF NEEDED, WHICH I DON'T THINK WE WILL, BECAUSE AGAIN, MOST OF THESE WERE IN THE CORES SCIENCE, ENGLISH, LANGUAGE, ARTS AND MATH.

SO THAT'S SOMETHING WHERE WE WE HOPE TO BE ABLE TO HAVE PLACEMENTS FOR THEM.

SO REALLY, AGAIN, ONE THING, DEBBIE CARTER IN THE BACK AND HER STAFF FOR ALL THE GREAT WORK THAT'S BEEN DONE, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY I THINK, IS JUST TO REASSURE STAFF THAT THEY'RE EMPLOYED NEXT YEAR AND THAT STABILITY IN EMPLOYMENT DURING VERY TRAUMATIC 26 MONTHS IS PROBABLY THE THE BEST NEWS, I THINK, FOR FOR ANYBODY.
