AND SO THE WAY WE'RE GOING TO DO THIS IS DR.
BALDERAS IS GOING TO CALL ON EACH ONE OF YOU.
WE'RE SO PROUD OF YOU AND GIVE YOU A CERTIFICATE AND CONGRATULATE YOU.
THE BOARD MEMBERS ARE GOING TO STAND HERE.
SOME OF US ARE HAND SHAKERS NOW AND SOME OF US ARE ELBOW BUMPERS OR.
BUT WE ALL WANT TO CONGRATULATE YOU IN OUR OWN WAY.
IT'S REALLY QUICKLY BEFORE WE START AGAIN, JUST AS DR.
KATIMS WAS MENTIONING, THE NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFICATION IS THE MOST RESPECTED PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE AVAILABLE IN EDUCATION AND PROVIDES NUMEROUS BENEFITS TO TEACHERS, STUDENTS AND SCHOOLS.
WE CONGRATULATE THEM FOR THIS ACCOMPLISHMENT, IT'S BEEN A LONG DAY AND CELEBRATE WITH THEM TONIGHT.
CERTIFICATES FOR FOLKS WHO ARE HERE, YOUR PRINCIPALS, PRINCIPALS WHO GET THE CERTIFICATE.
SO I'M GOING TO COME AROUND IF I COULD, AND THEN THAT WAY SHAKE HANDS AND THEN HAVE FOLKS FEEL THAT.
[00:06:05]

I DON'T THINK SHE WAS GOING TO BE HERE EITHER.
BUT MEGAN TEETER FROM TERRACE PARK SCHOOL.
COULDN'T MAKE IT. AND BRENDA TORRES AND STEPHANIE [INAUDIBLE] . AND I BELIEVE THAT IS IT.

SO NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS OUR SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT.DR. BALDERAS? OH, IT'S GOOD. THANK YOU.
THE COMBINATION OF YOUR FIRST AND LAST NAME.
I'LL BE BRIEF AGAIN WHEN I REALLY THINK THE BOARD FOR YOUR SCHOOL VISITS AS WE CONTINUE TO SPRING.
TODAY WE WERE ABLE TO VISIT EDMONDS-WOODWAY HIGH SCHOOL AND VISIT A LOT OF THEIR OTHER PROGRAMS. SO IT'S JUST PRETTY AMAZING WHEN SPRING HAPPENS AND YOU SEE KIDS THAT GET READY TO GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL, BUT ALSO JUST THE PHENOMENAL PROGRAMS THAT ARE IN PLACE.
SO JUST REALLY KUDOS TO ALL STAFF AND IT'S ALSO GOING TO BE GETTING BACK TO THE TRADITIONAL NORMAL WHERE I THINK THE BOARD MEMBERS HAVE VISITED. WE SAW STUDENT ELECTIONS, SO WHICH IS ALWAYS FUN AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL IN TERMS OF THE PROMOTION AND GETTING READY FOR THAT.
WE HAVE FOUR BASEBALL TEAMS PLAYING TONIGHT, FOUR BASEBALL TEAMS PLAYING TONIGHT.
IT'S THE FIRST TIME THAT'S HAPPENED.
LOOK AT IT, DR. SCHWAB, IN THE BACK.
FOUR TEAMS FROM THE SAME SCHOOL DISTRICT ARE IN THE SEMIFINALS OF THE DISTRICT.
SO IT'S PRETTY AWESOME FOR ALL FOUR BASEBALL TEAMS PLAYING TONIGHT.
AND SO IT'S PRETTY PHENOMENAL.
BUT ALSO WANT TO CONGRATULATE ALL THE COACHES AND KIDS IN SOFTBALL, OF COURSE, BASEBALL.
BUT ALSO WE HAVE TENNIS, SOCCER AND TRACK AND FIELD.
SO NOT ONLY THE KIDS BUT THE PARENTS THAT TAKE THEM TO EVERY PRACTICE, WASH THEIR CLOTHES AND KNOW THAT ALL TOO WELL FROM MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, BUT ALSO WORKED WITH AT NORTHWEST REGARDING METRICS FOR THE STRATEGIC PLAN AND HOPEFULLY TO GET SOMETHING TO THE BOARD HERE SOON.
SO I THINK WE'RE GETTING REALLY, REALLY CLOSE.
AND LASTLY, BEEN IN COMMUNICATION WITH DR.
MINOR IN TERMS OF THE TRANSITION.
SO SHE'S GOING TO BE IN DISTRICT NEXT WEEK TO MEET WITH BOARD AND STAFF AND WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT HAVING HER TRANSITION, BUT WE'RE IN CONSTANT COMMUNICATION, SO I'LL LET YOU KNOW THAT. SO THANK YOU.
[10. APPROVAL OF MINUTES-7:05 pm]
NEXT, WE HAVE APPROVAL OF MINUTES.THE FIRST SET OF MINUTES IS FOR THE APRIL 15TH SPECIAL MEETING.

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF APPROVING THE MINUTES FROM THE APRIL 18TH SPECIAL MEETING.
PLEASE SAY NAY. ANY ABSTENTIONS? AND THE MINUTES FOR THE APRIL 18TH SPECIAL MEETING ARE APPROVED.
THE THIRD SET OF MINUTES IS FROM THE APRIL 26TH REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING.
DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE THOSE MINUTES? I MOVE TO APPROVE SECOND.
I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND FOR THE APRIL 26TH REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING MINUTES.
ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE. I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF APPROVING THE MINUTES FROM THE APRIL 26TH BUSINESS MEETING.
PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE.
ANY ABSTENTIONS IN THE MINUTES FROM THE APRIL 26 BUSINESS MEETING ARE APPROVED.
[11. CONSENT AGENDA-7:10 pm]
NEXT, WE HAVE THE CONSENT AGENDA.THE CONSENT AGENDA IS A COLLECTION OF RATHER ROUTINE ITEMS THAT WE USUALLY PUT TOGETHER.
ALTHOUGH IF THERE ARE ANY THAT WE WANTED TO SEPARATE, WE COULD DO THAT AS PART OF DISCUSSION.
[00:15:03]
TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA HAS 11 ITEMS. THREE OF THEM RELATE TO PERSONNEL.AND OF THOSE SEVEN FIELD TRIPS, FIVE HAVE TO DO WITH SENDING STUDENTS TO ATHLETIC STATE TOURNAMENTS SO THAT THEY HAVE QUALIFIED TO GO TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT.
SO DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE OUR CONSENT AGENDA FOR TONIGHT? MOVE TO APPROVE. I SECOND.
I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND FOR TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE, I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.
ALL THOSE OPPOSED. PLEASE SAY NAY.
ANY ABSTENTIONS AND THE CONSENT AGENDA FOR TONIGHT IS APPROVED.
WE'RE JUST ROCKING AND ROLLING HERE, GUYS.
[12. PUBLIC COMMENTS-7:20 pm]
OKAY, NOW WE'VE COME TO THE PUBLIC COMMENT SECTION OF OUR MEETING.THE PUBLIC COMMENT SECTION OF THE AGENDA IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CITIZENS TO ADDRESS THE SCHOOL BOARD.
ITEMS BROUGHT FORWARD DURING THIS PORTION OF THE MEETING ARE NOT TYPICALLY ACTED UPON BY THE BOARD AT THIS TIME, BUT MAY BE FOLLOWED UP BY THE BOARD, THE SUPERINTENDENT AND OUR STAFF AND OR STAFF AT A LATER TIME.
THOSE SUBMITTING PUBLIC COMMENTS FOR A BOARD MEETING ARE ALLOWED TO GIVE THEIR COMMENTS IN PERSON VIRTUALLY, OR THEY CAN SUBMIT THEM IN WRITING. AND THOSE THAT ARE SUBMITTED IN WRITING ARE PUT ON THE AGENDA AS PART OF THE BOARD DOCS, RATHER THAN THEY ARE NO LONGER ON THE MINUTES, BUT THEY ARE ACTUALLY ATTACHED TO THE AGENDA.
THE BOARD ALSO ACCEPTS WRITTEN COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS AT ANY TIME THROUGH EMAILS.
WHILE WE ENCOURAGE AND APPRECIATE PUBLIC COMMENTS, PLEASE LIMIT YOUR COMMENTS TO 3 MINUTES.
IF A COMMENT BECOMES TOO LENGTHY, I MAY NEED TO INTERRUPT IN ORDER TO ALLOW EACH PERSON EQUAL TIME.
TONIGHT, WE HAVE TWO WRITTEN COMMENTS THAT WILL BE ATTACHED TO THE AGENDA.
AND WE HAVE TWO PUBLIC COMMENTS, TWO PEOPLE WHO'VE SIGNED UP TO MAKE PUBLIC COMMENTS.
THE FIRST IS JENNIFER FITZGERALD.
JENNIFER? OKAY. YOU CAN COME TO THE PODIUM AND WE ASK THAT YOU GET CLOSE ENOUGH TO THE MIC SO THAT IT'LL BE PICKED UP FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ARE LISTENING IN THE RECORDING LIKE 3 TO 6 INCHES AWAY WORKS REALLY WELL.
MY NAME IS JENNIFER FITZGERALD.
I AM THE TEACHER AND THE INTENSIVE SUPPORT PROGRAM AT MAPLEWOOD.
I'M ALSO THE PARENT OF FOUR CHILDREN WHO ATTEND SCHOOL IN THE EDMOND SCHOOL DISTRICT.
BUT TONIGHT, I'M ACTUALLY HERE TO SPEAK TO YOU AS A PARENT.
I WAS SHOCKED TO HEAR MULTIPLE COMMUNITY MEMBERS COME FORWARD WITH TRANSPHOBIA.
I'M HERE TONIGHT TO MAKE SURE THAT THAT IS NOT THE ONLY PERSPECTIVE THE BOARD HEARS.
SHE'LL BE SPEAKING IN A MINUTE.
SHE IS A SIXTH GRADER AT TERRACE PARK ELEMENTARY.
WHEN AIDEN WAS BORN, WE THOUGHT SHE WAS A BOY.
BUT THANKS TO FACEBOOK MEMORIES, I KNOW THAT AS YOUNG AS 14 MONTHS, SHE OCCASIONALLY, THEN FREQUENTLY AND THEN CONSISTENTLY LET US KNOW HER GENDER BY HER TOY AND CLOTHING CHOICES, HER FRIEND CHOICES, AND EVENTUALLY BY HER WORDS.
BEFORE AIDEN TURNED FIVE, SHE ASKED TO SWITCH TO SHE HER PRONOUNS, AND SHE HAS NEVER LOOKED BACK.
AIDEN DID KINDERGARTEN THROUGH FOURTH GRADE AT LINDALE ELEMENTARY.
AS AN ANXIOUS PARENT, I MADE SURE ALL THE TEACHERS KNEW SHE WAS TRANS TO MAKE SURE WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY SURPRISING PROBLEMS. NEVER DID A PROBLEM ARISE AND NEVER DID THE STAFF BREAK ADNAN'S DESIRE FOR CONFIDENTIALITY.
BY THE TIME AIDEN SWITCHED TO THE CHALLENGE PROGRAM AT TERRACE PARK FOR FIFTH GRADE, I WAS A MUCH CALMER PARENT AND I LEFT ADEN TO TELL HER STORY ON HER OWN TIMELINE. WHEN THE STUDENTS WERE ABLE TO RETURN TO IN-PERSON LEARNING LAST SPRING, NO ONE KNEW OF AIDEN'S TRANS STATUS EXCEPT FOR HER TWIN BROTHER, WHO ALSO ATTENDS TERRACE PARK.
[00:20:02]
BUT ONLY A MONTH LATER, AIDEN FELT SO COMFORTABLE AND SUPPORTED THAT SHE TOLD HER CLOSEST FRIENDS AND THEN EVENTUALLY HER TEACHER, AND THEN FINALLY HER WHOLE CLASS.I KNOW HER TEACHERS WILL USE HER PRONOUNS.
I KNOW SHE'LL BE SAFE IN BATHROOMS AND LOCKER ROOMS. I KNOW SHE'LL BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SPORTS THAT SHE LOVES.
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, I KNOW SHE'LL BE ABLE TO ADVOCATE FOR HERSELF AND BE HEARD.
SO ALL OF THAT IS TO SAY THANK YOU.
THANK YOU, LYNDALE, FOR KEEPING MY BABIES SAFE.
THANK YOU TO TERRACE PARK FOR PROVIDING HER A PLACE TO BLOSSOM.
THANK YOU FOR WORKING TOWARDS GENDER NEUTRAL BATHROOMS AND NEW CONSTRUCTION.
THANK YOU FOR PROVIDING HEALTH CURRICULUMS THAT ARE INCLUSIVE OF ALL STUDENTS.
THAT WAS MY MOM SAID I'M IN THE SIXTH GRADE CHALLENGE PROGRAM AT TERRACE PARK ELEMENTARY.
I WANTED TO SHARE A POEM I WROTE WITH EVERYONE WATCHING THIS.
I WANTED TO SHARE MY VIEW OF MY GENERATION WITH YOU AND HOW IT IS OK.
AND IN FACT, YOU NEED TO BE WHO YOU ARE.
THEY ARE MAD. THEY THINK WE ARE WHO WE ARE.
SO I CAME IN AND FOUND THE LIFE OF ME AND THAT SOME COME IN A BOX AND SOME COME WITH THE BOX.
HERE IN SIXTH GRADE, WE LOOK FOR OTHER BOXES, ONE BETTER THAN ANOTHER.
I WAS A YELLOW BOX FOR SAYING THERE WAS ONLY YELLOW AND RED IS UNTRUE.
0.0 PLUS AN EIGHT ON ITS SIDE.
KIDS THESE DAYS ARE MORE THAN KNOWN.
WE ARE FIGHTING FOR THE TRUTH.
AND WHEN SOMEONE IS WRONG, IT'S RIGHT TO THEM.
BUT IT'S FEAR THAT TOLD THEM MY GENERATION IS THROUGH.
WITH THE GLASS CEILING, WE ARE SHATTERING.
SO THANK YOU FOR LETTING US BREAK THE GLASS.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU, AIDAN, FOR COMING FORWARD AND TELLING YOUR STORY.
YOU'RE VERY BRAVE AND WE'RE VERY PROUD TO HAVE YOU IN THE DISTRICT.
[13. REPORTS-7:50 pm]
NEXT ON THE AGENDA ARE REPORTS.THE FIRST ONE IS THE DISTRICT STATUS REPORT.
THANK YOU, PRESIDENT KATIMS GOING TO HAVE THE SENIOR STAFF COME UP AND.
NOT SURE I WAS GOING TO START.
GOOD EVENING. NOT I'M NOT 3 TO 6 INCHES AWAY.
I HAVE A PROBLEM HERE. THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO RAISE THE MIC FOR YOU, DR.
SCHWAB. WELL, GOOD EVENING, EVERYBODY.
I GET THE PLEASURE OF KICKING OFF THE DISTRICT UPDATE TONIGHT AND WANTED TO TALK WITH YOU ALL FIRST.
AND SO WE'RE GOING TO PLAY THAT AND THEN I'LL GET INTO MY PART OF THE RECORD.
SO I DO HAVE AN UPDATE TO SHARE.
EDMONDS WE'LL BE FINE. I FEEL THE SAME WAY A LITTLE BIT, BUT IT'S LIKE HAVING YOUR CHILDREN PLAY EACH OTHER, RIGHT?
[00:25:04]
LIKE SERENA. AND WHO DO YOU ROOT FOR? EXACTLY.WILL BE PLAYING FOR THE SECOND SPOT IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.
BOTH MENTALLY TARIFFS AND THE LOSER OF THE SECOND GAME WILL PLAY AGAIN ON THE 12TH.
FOR ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO SAVE FOUR TEAMS OUT OF OUR LEAGUE WILL GO TO STATE.
SO WE'RE REALLY HOPING THAT ALL FOUR EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT BASEBALL TEAMS MAKE A MISTAKE.
SO LAST FRIDAY, SCHOOL LUNCH HERO DAY.
I SO APPRECIATE MEGAN BECAUSE SHE IS SO CREATIVE.
SO SHE HAD A STAFF RECOGNITION TIME WITH CERTIFICATES.
SHE CAME UP WITH CREATIVE CATEGORIES SUCH AS WHO DOUBLED BREAKFAST'S SALES OVER THIS LAST YEAR.
SHE GAVE CERTIFICATES FOR WHO WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND.
SHE HAD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS, COLOR PAGES THAT THEY GAVE TO THEIR SCHOOL HEROES, AND SHE ORDERED ALL NEW APRONS FOR THE STAFF.
SO JUST KIND OF RECOGNIZE THEM.
I'M BACK. SO I WANTED TO GIVE YOU A QUICK UPDATE.
SO USAGE FOR PAPER TUTOR CONTINUES TO INCREASE.
WE'RE OVER 300 TUTORING SESSIONS SO FAR.
SO THIS IS A SESSION FROM A STUDENT WHO'S WORKING ON HER CHEMISTRY.
AND YOU CAN SEE THAT THE STUDENT HAD A QUESTION ABOUT BOYLE'S LAW.
AND SO THE TUTOR WALKS HER THROUGH AND ASKS HER PROBING QUESTIONS.
BUT REALLY, AS YOU READ THROUGH THIS INTERACTION, WHAT YOU'LL SEE IS THE TUTOR REALLY PROMPTING THE STUDENT TO FIGURE THE PROBLEM OUT AND GET AND FIGURE OUT THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTIONS THEMSELVES.
THEY AND THERE'S A LOT OF INTERACTION WITH WHITEBOARDS AND DRAWING PROBLEMS. AND SO I'LL SHARE THIS WITH YOU AND YOU CAN ACTUALLY GET INTO IT.
AND THERE HAVE BEEN A COUPLE OF REALLY FUNNY ONES.
THE STUDENTS ARE NOT QUITE SURE WHAT PAPER IS.
AND WE REALLY WANT TO CONTINUE TO SEE THE USE OF THIS GROW.
BUT IT'S REALLY BEEN PRETTY REMARKABLE WATCHING KIDS AND I THINK READING THESE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE STUDENTS AND THE TUTORS, WATCHING HOW THE TUTORS REALLY PROMPT THE STUDENTS TO THINK FOR THEMSELVES AND SOLVE THE PROBLEM THEMSELVES.
THE TUTOR WILL NEVER GIVE THE STUDENT AN ANSWER.
THEY WILL ALWAYS SAY, WELL, HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT THIS? OR WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS? AND WE'LL TRY TO GET THE STUDENT TO COME TO THE SOLUTION BY THEMSELVES.
AND IT'S JUST BEEN A IT'S BEEN REALLY GREAT TO SEE THIS IN ACTION.
AND SO WE'RE REALLY WE'RE REALLY HAPPY THAT OUR STUDENTS HAVE ACCESS TO IT.
AND WE WANT TO WE WANT TO WATCH IT CONTINUE TO GROW.
DOES IT? DID THEY COLLECT A LITTLE BIT OF FEEDBACK AT THE END OF A SESSION? THEY DO. THEY ACTUALLY DO SO AT THE END OF A SESSION.
AND SO THE TEACHER GETS SOME FEEDBACK TOO ABOUT WHAT THEIR STUDENT HAS BEEN DOING ON PAPER.
I KNOW THERE WAS A QUESTION LAST TIME ABOUT CAN WE GET SOME INFORMATION ABOUT HOW LONG STUDENTS HAVE BEEN IN TUTORING SESSIONS? SOME OF THEM ARE PRETTY QUICK.
IT'S LIKE A STUDENT JUMPS ON IT.
SO I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND THEY'RE IN FOR MAYBE FIVE OR 10 MINUTES.
BUT THERE HAVE BEEN SOME SESSIONS THAT HAVE BEEN AS LONG AS A COUPLE OF HOURS.
OH, WOW. SO IT'S BEEN IT'S BEEN REALLY GOOD TO SEE.
I'M WONDERING, DURING PEAK TIMES, IS THERE A CAPACITY ISSUE WHERE THEY MIGHT SAY, YOU KNOW, YOU'RE THIRD IN LINE AND WE'LL GET TO YOU IN SO MUCH, YOU KNOW, LIKE WHEN WE CALL FOR HELP, WHEN WE'RE TRYING TO BUY SOMETHING OR.
THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION. I DON'T KNOW IF WE'VE ENCOUNTERED THAT YET.
THEY PAPER SAYS THEY HAVE BETWEEN 40 AND 50,000 TUTORS AVAILABLE.
THEY HAVEN'T EXCEEDED THEY HAVEN'T HIT THAT CAPACITY MARK YET.
AND THEIR CLAIM IS THAT WITHIN 2 TO 3 MINUTES, A STUDENT WILL HAVE ACCESS TO A TUTOR.
AWESOME. YEAH, WE HAVE SOME FORTUNATELY I THINK I SHARED LAST TIME THE 1 A.M.
[00:30:01]
WE HAVE STUDENTS THAT ARE ACCESSING TUTORING.ANY OTHER QUESTIONS FOR [INAUDIBLE]? DO YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS? I JUST KNOW THAT LIKE WITH CONCEPTS LIKE MATH AND CHEMISTRY, IT'S GOT TO BE LIKE SOMETIMES YOU GO ON AT MIDNIGHT, SHOW THEM THEIR CHEMISTRY PROBLEM AND GETTING THAT HELP IS BENEFICIAL.
THANKS. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? THANK YOU SO MUCH.
I THINK I'M STILL GOING. I MAY HAVE ONE OR TWO.
OKAY. OH, JUST A QUICK A QUICK GRADUATION UPDATE.
WE'RE WELL INTO THE PROCESS OF PLANNING COMMENCEMENT CEREMONIES FOR THE CLASS OF 2022.
WE WILL CONTINUE TO OFFER LIVE STREAMS OF ALL GRADUATION CEREMONIES.
SO THAT'S GOING TO BE DONE BY OUR BROADCASTING NETWORK AND [INAUDIBLE] HIGH SCHOOL THAT THOSE STUDENTS AND [INAUDIBLE] THE TEACHER, WILL AGAIN COORDINATE THE LIVE STREAMING OF ALL THE CEREMONIES. AND I WANTED TO SHARE JUST A QUICK SCHEDULE OF THE CEREMONIES WITH YOU ALL.
I KNOW THAT YOU MAY HAVE SEEN THIS ALREADY, BUT FRIDAY, JUNE 3RD, IS OUR FIRST GRADUATION.
THAT'S COMING UP VERY QUICKLY.
AND ALL OF OUR CEREMONIES WILL BE AT THE EDMONDS STADIUM OUTDOORS.
ALTHOUGH IF IT RAINS, WE STILL DO THEM OUTSIDE.
SO OUR OUR KIDS HAVE KIDS HAVE VOTED AND THEY WANT TO GO OUTSIDE, SO WE'LL BE OUTSIDE.
SO JUST A LITTLE BIT OF UPDATE ON GRADUATION.
IT IS NATIONAL NURSES WEEK AND WE WANT TO THANK ALL OF OUR SCHOOL NURSES.
I KNOW MARA WAS DRIVING AROUND THE DISTRICT TODAY RECOGNIZING THEM.
I WAS AT EDMONDS ELEMENTARY TODAY AND I LOVED THE COMMENT BY THE OFFICE MANAGER THERE.
BECAUSE IN THIS TIME AND THIS LAST 26 MONTHS, NURSES HAVE REALLY, REALLY MADE THE THE DIFFERENCE.
SO THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR NURSES.
NEXT SLIDE. A REALLY QUICK SNOHOMISH HEALTH DISTRICT UPDATE.
THIS IS REALLY SIGNIFICANT FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO CHECK SNOHOMISH COUNTY'S WEBSITE.
AS LONG AS THE PANDEMIC HAS BEEN GOING ON, THE DASHBOARD HAS SHOWN A 14 DAY ROLLING COUNT.
AND MONDAY I PULLED IT UP AND I NOTICED THAT IT HAD CHANGED.
SO WHEN WE REPORTED TO THE BOARD, WE'VE ALWAYS SAID SO MANY PER 100,000 FOR THE LAST 14 DAYS.
NOW IT'S BEING REPORTED AS ONLY A SEVEN DAY ROLLING COUNT.
THAT'S A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER, 220 OUT OF 100 FOR EVERY 100,000 IN EACH COUNTY.
RIGHT NOW, THE POSITIVITY RATE IS AT 11.6%.
70 TO 80% OF RAPID TESTS ARE NOT CAPTURED BY THE SYSTEM.
SO WE KNOW THERE'S A LOT OF RAPID TESTS OUT THERE HAPPENING WITH POSITIVES.
AND SNOHOMISH COUNTY HEALTH PEOPLE AREN'T REPORTING IT TO THE HEALTH DISTRICT.
THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN THE SOUTH, WHICH ARE US, ARE EXPERIENCING HIGHER NUMBERS.
YESTERDAY WE HAD 5% OF OUR STUDENTS OUT AND 5% OF OUR STAFF OUT.
AND AGAIN, WE'RE JUST REALLY RECOMMENDING STAY HOME WHEN YOU'RE SICK.
ON MONDAY, WE HAD 95 CASES IN DISTRICT AND THE LAST I CHECKED TODAY WAS THE HIGH FORTIES THAT COULD THAT INCREASES AS WE GO THROUGH THE NIGHT AND THEN WE GET SOME TOMORROW THAT OUR MESSAGES AND THOSE KIND OF THINGS.
SO THAT'S THE HIGHEST MONDAY THAT WE'VE HAD IN TWO MONTHS.
JUST A REAL QUICK UPDATE ON THE VARIANT.
WE DO EXPECT THIS TO CONTINUE TO ROLL IN THOSE KIND OF THINGS IF A DIFFERENT VARIANT COMES OUT.
THE CONCERN IS THAT THERE COULD BE PEOPLE COULD BE MORE SICK.
MACRON IS NOT MAKING PEOPLE AS SICK AS THE OTHER VARIANTS BEFORE IT.
IF YOU NEED TO GET TESTING, YOU CAN GET THAT AT YOUR SCHOOL, BOTH RAPID AND PCR.
BUT THAT IS ALSO THE NUMBER AND THERE'S DRIVE THRU TESTING THERE.
THIS DASHBOARD IMAGE IS RIGHT THERE BELOW.
[00:35:01]
YOU CAN SEE IN THE LAST WEEK I CAN'T READ THE DATE THERE, BUT I THINK IT'S THE LAST WEEK AND THE HIGH BAR OF THE CASES REPORTED TO THE DISTRICT.SO WE'VE HAD CASES REALLY GO UP SINCE SPRING BREAK AND THE MASK MANDATE BEING LIFTED.
AND THEN JUST REALLY QUICKLY, ON OUR SPECIFIC SCHOOL DISTRICT, LAST 14 DAYS, 492 POSITIVE CASES, WE'VE DONE 323 PCR TESTS WITH ABOUT A 9.5% POSITIVITY RATE.
THE RAPID TEST, WE'VE HAD 36 POSITIVE CASES IN DISTRICT.
AGAIN, WE DON'T REPORT OUT HOW MANY WE'VE DONE, WE JUST HAVE THEM AVAILABLE.
SNOHOMISH COUNTY HEALTH IS RECOMMENDING TO IMPLEMENT MASK MANDATES OR REMOTE LEARNING FOR TEN DAYS, WITH CLASSROOMS EXHIBITING THAT HIGHER COVID CASES AND THAT OUTBREAK STATUS, WHICH IS ABOUT RATE AND AND CASE NUMBERS AND THOSE KIND OF THINGS.
SO WE DO HAVE TWO CLASSROOMS RIGHT NOW, ACTUALLY, THREE THAT ARE IN A MASK MANDATE SITUATION.
IT'S A LITTLE BIT DIFFICULT, RIGHT, ESPECIALLY AT SECONDARY.
LUCKILY, THESE HAVE BEEN ELEMENTARY.
WE'RE NOT SURE HOW TO PULL THAT OFF AT SECONDARY.
IT'S NOT CLUSTERED THE SAME, BUT THE ELEMENTARY, THOSE THREE CLASSES ARE BEING ASKED TO MASK WHEN THEY'RE IN CLASS, IF THEY'RE OUTSIDE AT RECESS OR WHATEVER ELSE, THEN THEY DON'T HAVE TO MASK. HAVE YOU HAD MUCH PUSHBACK FROM PARENTS AND THOSE THREE CLASSES THAT.
WE'VE HAD THE ONLY ODDITIES ARE ARE JUST DIFFICULTIES WITH THE PARENTS SOMETIMES ARE LIKE I THINK IT'S ALLERGIES OR I THINK IT'S SO WE'RE HAVING TO SAY, HEY, GET THAT FROM YOUR HEALTH PROVIDER, THEN GET US THAT INFORMATION SO THAT IF IT IS ALLERGIES, THEN WE CAN RULE OUT COVID SYMPTOMS AND THOSE KIND OF THINGS.
CAN YOU JUST CLARIFY FOR ME IT SAYS HIGHER COVID CASES OR THOSE WITH AN OUTBREAK STATUS LIKE WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? THE RECOMMENDATION FOR MASKS.
LIKE WHAT IS HIGHER THAN WHAT? YES. SO WE WATCH FOR THE CLUSTERING.
WE'VE BEEN WATCHING THIS FOR ABOUT SIX, SEVEN MONTHS.
WE WERE MEETING KIND OF EVERY DAY AND WE JUST STARTED MEETING AGAIN EVERY DAY AT NOON.
AND IT'S NOT MUCH COUNTY HELP.
IT DEPENDS ON THE NUMBER IN THE CLASS.
SO AGAIN, IT'S ABOUT THE NUMBER OF POSITIVE CASES, IT'S ABOUT THE SPREAD.
AND THEN WE KEEP AN EYE ON IT AND THEN GENERALLY ASK, BECAUSE IT'S BEEN JUST THREE IN THE LAST WEEK.
AND THEN WE ASKED SNOHOMISH COUNTY HEALTH AND THEY MAKE THEIR RECOMMENDATION.
THEY RECOMMEND US HAVING MASKING IN THE CLASSROOM OR SHUTTING DOWN A CLASS.
WE REALLY WANT TO KEEP OUR CLASSROOMS AND IN-PERSON SERVICES AVAILABLE.
THERE'S NO MORE SLIDES. RIGHT? OKAY.
THE NEXT REPORT, WE'RE MOVING ON RIGHT TO THE BUDGET REPORT.
YES. SO, LYDIA SELLIE, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
THANK YOU. SO WE'RE REPORTING ON MARCH THIS MONTH.
WHEN WE REPORT ON APRIL, YOU WILL GET MY FINANCE DIRECTOR, CHRIS COLLISON, IN MY ABSENCE BECAUSE MY OLDEST DAUGHTER IS GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL ON THAT DAY. SO ONE DAY ALMOST.
SO SOMEBODY POINTED OUT A QUIRK.
SO I WAS JUST GOING TO KIND OF TALK ABOUT THAT MOMENTARILY.
SO THE PURPOSE OF THIS PARTICULAR REPORT IS JUST TAKE THE FIVE BACK PAGES THAT ARE CALLED THE BUDGET STATUS FOR EACH FUND AND TURN THOSE FIVE PAGES INTO ONE PAGE.
SO YOU'VE GOT A QUICK SUMMARY OF ALL FIVE FUNDS ON ONE PAGE, BUT THE QUIRK IS THAT REVENUES ARE ACTUAL MARCH 31ST REVENUES.
WHAT IS LISTED AS EXPENDITURES ARE BOTH ACTUAL EXPENDITURES AND THAT WHICH HAS BEEN ENCUMBERED AND AN ENCUMBRANCE IS AN OBLIGATION TO PAY. IT IS PERHAPS A PAY CONTRACT OR A PURCHASE ORDER THAT HAS BEEN OBLIGATED, BUT THE SERVICES HAVEN'T BEEN PERFORMED OR THE GOODS HAVEN'T BEEN RECEIVED, SO WE HAVEN'T ACTUALLY PAID THE BILL.
IT IS A WAY TO ANALYZE THE BUDGET, TO SEE KIND OF ACTUAL EXPENDITURES PLUS ENCUMBRANCES.
IS THAT STILL IN LINE WITH WHAT THE BOARD ADOPTED BUDGET IS? SO THAT IS A TOOL FOR US.
AND SO IF YOU ACTUALLY LOOK AT ACTUAL 21, 22, STARTING WITH THE GENERAL FUND, THE REVENUES OF 190.9 MILLION ARE WHAT WE'VE RECEIVED TO DATE.
THE 344 MILLION ARE EVERYTHING THAT'S BEEN SPENT IN OBLIGATED.
[00:40:04]
AND THEN THERE WILL BE OTHER EXPENDITURES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR SUCH AS WELL, A PURCHASE ORDER THAT I THAT I DECIDE THAT I NEED 600 BINDERS AND WRITE THE PURCHASE ORDER TODAY.SO THAT'S OBVIOUSLY NOT INCLUDED IN THESE NUMBERS.
BUT AGAIN, IT'S A TRACKING TOOL, SO IT LOOKS A LITTLE BIT FUNNY.
THE ACTUAL ENDING FUND BALANCE, FOR INSTANCE, ON THE GENERAL FUND OF 15 067963, THAT IS THE ACTUAL FUND BALANCE AS OF THE END OF MARCH.
NEXT PAGE. UM, SOMEBODY ELSE POINTED OUT ANOTHER QUIRK ON THIS REPORT, AND THAT IS IN TWO CATEGORIES LOCAL SUPPORT NON TAX.
WE HAVE A CURRENT YEAR TO DATE OF JUST OVER 1.3 MILLION, BUT A $13 MILLION BUDGET.
SO THE SCHOOL ACCOUNTING SYSTEM IS A LITTLE BIT TRICKY IN THIS STATE IN THAT ANYTHING THAT WE HAVE IN FUND BALANCE AT THE END OF THE FISCAL YEAR THAT IS CARRIED FORWARD AND SPENT FOR THAT SAME PURPOSE, IT WAS GENERATED.
AND BY THAT I MEAN, FOR INSTANCE, WE ALLOCATE DIFFERENT GROUPS, TEACHERS, PROFESSIONAL TECHNICAL EMPLOYEES, A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ALLOCATION.
SO IN ORDER FOR THEM TO SPEND IT OUT OF FUND BALANCE, WE HAVE TO TURN IT INTO WE HAVE TO TAKE THE CASH OUT OF THE FUND BALANCE BY USING A REVENUE ACCOUNT.
SO THOSE REVENUE, THE BUDGET BALANCE IN LOCAL SUPPORT NON TAX IS OVERSTATED BECAUSE THAT IS THE WAY THAT WE CAN ROLL THOSE CERTAIN CATEGORIES FORWARD.
IT'S MONEY SITTING IN THE BANK AT THE END OF THE YEAR.
THE OTHER CATEGORY THAT'S THAT'S SIMILAR IS OTHER REVENUE.
SO BACK IN THE OLD DAYS, LIKE 2004, YOU WERE ABLE TO TAKE A TECH LEVY EXPENDITURE AND DIRECTLY CHARGE IT TO THE CAPITAL PROJECTS, FUND THE TECH LEVY. AND THEN THE AUDITORS AND THE ACCOUNTANTS SAID, NO, YOU NEED TO CHARGE IT TO THE GENERAL FUND AND HAVE THE CAPITAL PROJECTS FUND REIMBURSE YOU REIMBURSE THE GENERAL FUND SO THAT OTHER REVENUE CATEGORY, THE BULK OF IT IS TECH LEVY EXPENDITURES FOR WHICH THE CAPITAL PROJECTS FUND IS TRANSFERRING MONEY IN.
NOW I'M GETTING WEEDY AND I SEE EYES GLOSSING OVER SO WE WILL TURN TO IF YOU WANT TO SKIP AHEAD TO THE TREND LINE JUST A COUPLE PAGES FORWARD THAT ONE PERFECT.
SO I AM TRACKING THIS CLOSELY.
EVERY MONTH WE WERE CLOSER TO ABOUT 25 MILLION PROJECTED TO END THE YEAR.
I'M A LITTLE BIT CLOSER TO 26 MILLION, WHICH IS GOOD NEWS.
SO AGAIN, KEEPING AN EYE ON THAT EVERY MONTH AND THEN IF YOU WILL, TURN TO THE NEXT SLIDE.
SO BECAUSE IT IS MAY AND WE'RE REPORTING ON MARCH, I GET A SNEAK PEEK INTO ENROLLMENT GOING FORWARD.
SO FORTUNATELY, BETWEEN MARCH AND MAY, WE ONLY DROP 21 FTE, WHICH IS ACTUALLY EXTREMELY FANTASTIC AT THIS TIME OF YEAR BECAUSE YOU DO SEE A LITTLE BIT OF A DROP OFF IN THE SPRING, UNFORTUNATELY.
AND IT'S IT'S REALLY VERY, VERY SMALL, WHICH IS A GREAT SIGN.
ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS? EVERYBODY GOOD? THANK YOU, LYDIA, VERY MUCH.
[14. UNFINISHED BUSINESS-8:20 pm]
NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS UNFINISHED BUSINESS.[00:45:06]
AND USE OF SCHOOL MASCOTS, IMAGES OR LOGOS.DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE OR MOVE TO APPROVE? SECOND, I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND FOR ADOPTING REVISED POLICY NUMBER 6970.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? I WANT TO SAY A COUPLE OF THINGS JUST REAL QUICK ON THIS.
I THINK IT'S I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY ABOUT THE LAW SPECIFICALLY.
WHEN I WAS DOING JAIL WORK, I WOULD DO A LOT OF WORK WITH THE NATIVE COMMUNITIES AROUND HERE.
AND THERE ARE SOME REALLY AMAZING TRADITIONS.
YOU CAN GO TO SOME OF THEIR POWWOWS AND A FEW OTHER THINGS THAT ARE REALLY COOL.
I DON'T WANT THIS TO BE SEEN AS A FORECLOSURE OF THAT OPTION FOR US.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? I KNOW IN THE PAST WE'VE ASKED AND I'M WONDERING IF THERE'S AN ANSWER IF WE HAVE.
SO PART OF THE WAY THE LAW OR THE POLICY IS STATED SAYS THAT WE SHOULD COMMUNICATE WITH THE LOCAL TRIBE ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT A MASCOT OR LOGO, ETC., SHOULD BE CHANGED.
OUR NATIVE PROGRAM IS IN CONSTANT COMMUNICATION WITH OUR WITH OUR LOCAL TRIBES.
AND I KNOW THAT DR. BALDERAS DEPARTMENT OVERSEES THAT.
BALDERAS IS AT. BUT IN THIS CASE, IN TERMS OF, I THINK, THE PROCESS THAT THE BOARD WANTS TO INFUSE, WHICH IS AGAIN, I ABSOLUTELY DO BELIEVE THAT WE NEED TO COMMUNICATE WITH OUR LOCAL TRIBES AND MAKE SURE WE ENGAGE WHENEVER THERE'S ANYTHING OF THE SUBSTANCE IN TERMS OF WHETHER IT'S A MASCOT. AND I THINK WE'RE GOING TO HAVE MASCOTS, BUT ANY TRADITIONS.
I KNOW THAT EDMONDS COLLEGE HAD A POWWOW NOT THAT LONG AGO, I THINK A WEEK OR SO AGO.
NOW, HOW DO WE ENGAGE AND BE MORE MORE INTENTIONAL WITH OUR LOCAL OUTREACH? SO I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WOULD BE A GOOD PRESENTATION FOR A FUTURE BOARD MEETING, ACTUALLY, IN TERMS OF HOW TO HOW WE DO ENGAGE AND HAVE THE NATIVE PROGRAM BE ABLE TO COME IN AND DO A PRESENTATION.
SO I'LL WORK WITH BOARD LEADERSHIP ON THAT.
AND DIRECTOR SMITH, I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENTS, BECAUSE I THINK THAT DOVETAILS WITH THIS, THAT WE REALLY JUST NEED TO HAVE MAKING SURE THAT WE HAVE A GOOD ONGOING RELATIONSHIP AND COMMUNICATION.
SO IF THIS SOMETHING COMES UP, WE CAN OR FIND OTHER WAYS TO HONOR THEIR CULTURE AS PART OF WHAT WE DO IN THE IN THE DISTRICT.
SO I'VE HEARD A MOTION TO APPROVE THIS AND A SECOND.
AND WITH NO FURTHER DISCUSSION, I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.
ADOPTED. WE HAVE NO FURTHER PUBLIC COMMENTS, AM I CORRECT? OH, WE HAVE NEW ONES.
[15. PUBLIC COMMENTS]
THANK YOU. OKAY.WE HAVE TWO NEW PUBLIC COMMENTS.
HELLO, I'M KAREN MOSSMAN, AND I WANTED TO TALK ABOUT THE LETTER THAT I WROTE AND READ ON APRIL 12TH.
WHAT I DID STATE WAS I WANTED TO KNOW WHEN THE BOARD AND DISTRICT WOULD BE ALLOWING THE SAME EQUITY, INCLUSION AND RECOGNITION FOR THE STUDENTS AND STAFF WHO CHOOSE THEIR GOD GIVEN GENDER, MALE OR FEMALE.
AND ALTHOUGH I'M NOT A BIOLOGIST, I DO KNOW HOW TO DEFINE A WOMAN AND A MAN.
WHY HASN'T THERE BEEN ANYTHING FOR THOSE WHO DON'T FOLLOW THAT WAY OF THINKING? THAT IS ALL I HAD ASKED FOR WHEN I PRESENTED MY LETTER.
[00:50:03]
IT'S WAY PAST TIME TO START DOING WHAT YOUR WEBSITE SAYS, AS THEIR FIRST WORD IS EQUITY AND INCLUDE ALL STUDENTS EVERY DAY AND NOT A CERTAIN DAY, WEEK OR MONTH FOR SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS.WHAT KIND OF LIABILITY INSURANCE IS THIS DISTRICT CARRYING AND WHAT KIND OF EXPOSURE WILL THE DISTRICT CARRY GOING FORWARD FOR THIS TYPE OF ACTIVITY? THAT COULD BE SIGNIFICANT.
WHAT IS THE COST BREAKDOWN FOR THE $800,000 THAT IS BEING EXPENDED FOR THIS FOR THIS TRAILER? USUALLY TRAILERS LIKE THIS, I KNOW THAT DISTRICT HAS A LOT OF EXPERIENCE INSTALLING TRAILERS WITHIN THEIR BUILDINGS, YET I WONDER, YOU KNOW, THE 800,000 SEEMS LIKE A PRETTY FAT BUDGET FOR THIS TYPE OF INSTALLATION.
MEDICAL RECORDS, HOW ARE MEDICAL RECORDS GOING TO BE KEPT? I PRESUME THEY WILL BE COMPLYING WITH THE ELECTRONIC PROCESS THAT IS NOW MANDATED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.
AND ARE THESE RECORDS GOING TO BE TRANSFERRED TO THE STUDENTS OR THE PATIENTS ACCOUNT WHERE THEIR GENERAL MEDICAL PRACTICE OR NEEDS ARE BEING MET? AND HOW IS THIS STAFFED? IS THIS A PART TIME STAFFING OR FULL TIME STAFFING? AND ARE THE STAFFS GOING TO BE COMPRISED OF LICENSED MDS OR LICENSED DENTISTS? THESE ARE KIND OF ISSUES THAT ARE SOMEWHAT EXPENSIVE, AND THE BOARD SEEMS TO BE SOMEWHAT NONCHALANT IN EXPENDING MONEY IN THIS FASHION.
AND THIS IS GOING TO BE GOING FORWARD.
IT'S NOT JUST THIS $800,000 FACILITY INSTALLATION, BUT THE ONGOING STAFFING AND RECORDKEEPING INSURANCE ISSUES AND THE EXPOSURE THAT THE DISTRICT WILL BE HAVING REGARDING THIS.
[16. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS]
ARE HAVE VARIOUS REASONS FOR NOT BEING HERE.THIS IS ONE OF THE LAST BOARD MEETINGS THAT I'LL HAVE AS A STUDENT ADVISOR.
SCHWAB TALK ABOUT GRADUATION IS SURREAL, I THINK IS THE WORD.
I'M REALLY EXCITED THAT WE'RE BACK TO SORT OF THE IN-PERSON GRADUATION AND EVERYTHING LIKE THAT.
WE'VE HAD LIKE PEOPLE IN AND OUT FOR VARIOUS DIFFERENT REASONS, BUT A LOT MORE PEOPLE THAT ARE LIKE SICK IN CLASSES.
AND FROM THE PERSPECTIVE, I GET THAT IT'S REALLY HARD TO NOT COME IN TO LIKE TO STAY HOME AND EVERYTHING WHEN YOU'RE HAVING SYMPTOMS. BUT JUST DO KEEP THAT IN MIND IS SOMETHING THAT I THINK IS WORTH MENTIONING BECAUSE IT IS QUITE A SPREADER, AS WE'VE DISCOVERED IN TERMS OF THE.
PAPER TUTOR IS AN EXCELLENT RESOURCE AND I WISH THAT WE'D HAD THIS WHEN I WAS STRUGGLING THROUGH CHEMISTRY, NOT MY BEST SUBJECT, AND I PROBABLY SPENT WAY TOO MANY NIGHTS TRYING TO FIGURE THAT OUT.
SO I'M REALLY GLAD THAT WE HAVE THAT IN PLACE.
AND YEAH, I THINK AS WE WIND DOWN THE YEAR, IT'S DEFINITELY BEEN CRAZY AND ALSO AMAZING TO BE BACK IN PERSON GIVEN JUST THINKING ABOUT LAST YEAR AND WHERE WE WERE TO BE BACK IN PERSON AND HAVING ALL THESE EXPERIENCES AND HAVING SO MANY TEACHERS THAT ARE JUST STICKING WITH
[00:55:07]
IT AND PROVIDING ALL THE SUPPORT TO THE STUDENTS.CONGRATULATIONS TO THE TEACHERS TODAY THAT HAVE THEIR CERTIFICATIONS AND JUST THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS CONTINUED TO SUPPORT STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THIS CRAZY RIDE.
I'M THINKING ABOUT RODRIGO'S COMMENTS, AND I'M FORGETTING I'M SUPPOSED TO BE FACILITATING THIS.
I APOLOGIZE, DIRECTOR SMITH? ALL RIGHT, UM, I'LL BE BRIEF TONIGHT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
I DIDN'T WRITE EVERYONE'S NAME DOWN AS THEY WERE SPEAKING, BUT I DID JUST WANT TO TALK A LITTLE BIT THAT I THOUGHT THAT THE PROCESS THAT WE WENT THROUGH TONIGHT WITH THE PUBLIC COMMENTS WAS VERY GOOD PROCESS.
THE WOMAN WHO SPOKE THERE IN OUR SECOND SET, I CAN'T REMEMBER YOUR LAST NAME.
I'M SORRY, BUT SHE SHARED WHAT HER EXPERIENCE IS AND WHAT SHE FEELS LIKE.
AND THE REALITY IS THAT NONE OF US CAN EVER KNOW WHAT SOMEONE ELSE'S EXPERIENCE IS.
I CAN BE IN A ROOM WITH SOMEBODY ELSE AND SEE THE SAME THING AND EXPERIENCE THE SAME STUFF.
AND YET WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT VIEWS ON IT.
AND I'M GLAD THEY HAVE A GOOD STORY.
AND I THINK THAT SHE AND I MIGHT HAVE A DIFFERENCE OF OPINION AND WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE.
BUT I DON'T THINK SHE'S A BAD PERSON.
AND I THINK THAT THE WORD TRANSPHOBIC IS VERY LOADED.
AND I THINK THAT IT DOES MAKE PEOPLE FEEL LIKE WE'RE TRYING TO SAY THAT THEY'RE A BAD PERSON.
AND THAT'S WHY I TRY TO STAY AWAY FROM WORDS LIKE THAT.
SO I JUST WANT TO SAY, YOU KNOW, EVEN THOUGH I MAY DISAGREE WITH SOME OTHERS IN OUR COMMUNITY ABOUT STUFF, THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT I THINK ANYONE OUT THERE IS A BAD PERSON OR ISN'T FIGHTING FOR WHAT THEY THINK IS RIGHT OR WHAT THEY THINK IS GOING TO BE BEST.
AND THE LAST COMMENT WAS MR. SHAPIRO'S COMMENT ABOUT THE THE COST OF OUR MEDICAL CENTER AND EVERYTHING.
AND I DO THINK THOSE ARE SOME VERY GOOD QUESTIONS.
MR. SHAPIRO AND I LOOK FORWARD TO THE DISTRICT LETTING US KNOW.
AND SO I CERTAINLY HOPE THAT DR.
WHY THIS IS A GOOD MOVE FOR THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT? SO THANK YOU. THANKS, DIRECTOR SMITH.
DIRECTOR NOBLE? OH, WELL, I THINK DIRECTOR WAITE SAID IT MUCH BETTER THAN I COULD, BUT I JUST DID WANT TO EMPHASIZE THAT I APPRECIATE THE AIDEN'S PRESENTATION AND HIS MOM AND REALIZE HIS SITUATION.
ANY TRANSGENDER SITUATION IS GOING TO BE VERY DIFFICULT IN A SCHOOL AND THE FACT THAT AT HIS SCHOOL IT HAS BEEN A REASONABLY POSITIVE EXPERIENCE MAKES ME PROUD OF OUR DISTRICT AND I HOPE THAT THAT KIND OF EXPERIENCE IS REPEATED IN OTHER SCHOOLS.
THAT'S ALL I AM. THANK YOU, DIRECTOR NOBLE.
DIRECTOR CHASE? HEY. THANK YOU.
WE ARE KEEPERS OF EQUITY TREES ON THE BOARD.
AND IT'S THIS PHENOMENAL PROJECT.
AND THIS MONTH, THE TOKEN OR THAT WE'RE CALLING THE ORNAMENTS EXCUSE ME, THE ORNAMENTS EXCUSE ME ARE ABOUT DIVERSITY, BECAUSE DIVERSITY IS THE ONE THING WE ALL HAVE IN COMMON, AND WE CELEBRATE IT EVERY DAY.
AND THAT IS WHAT IS GOING TO BE HANGING ON THE DIVERSITY, THE EQUITY TREES THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT.
AND IT DID DID PASS THE COMMITTEE WITH A DO PASS THE THERE ARE TWO POSITIONS THAT ARE VERY SIMILAR.
[01:00:01]
SWITCH FROM PETROLEUM POWERED VEHICLES, FLEETS TO ELECTRIC VEHICLE FLEETS AND SPECIFIC FUNDING.WE'LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS. OF COURSE, EVERY DISTRICT CAN BRING FORWARD WHATEVER THEY LIKE.
AND IT BECAME [INAUDIBLE] WILL INITIATE AND OR SUPPORT LEGISLATION TO ENCOURAGE POLICY AND TECHNOLOGY CONDITIONAL UPON FULL FUNDING FOR GREEN BUILDING FLEET ELECTRIFICATION AND COMPREHENSIVE, CLIMATE RESILIENT OPERATION PRACTICES THAT WILL SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS LIVING AND LEARNING IN A HEALTHY AND SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT.
SO THAT'S WHAT THAT WAS THE LANGUAGE THAT WAS A DO PASS FROM OUR DISTRICT THERE.
STUDENTS ARE, OF COURSE, ENCOURAGED, AND EVERYBODY'S ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE.
AND WE'LL JUST SEE SEE WHAT HAPPENS AS WE GET CLOSER.
AND THE OTHER THING IS ANNUAL CONFERENCE IS COMING UP IN NOVEMBER IN SPOKANE.
SO THEY HAVE THEY'VE DECIDED IT'S GOING TO BE IN-PERSON ONLY.
WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THESE BEFORE, AND I HADN'T REALIZED THAT THE TIMELINE HAD COME UP SO QUICKLY, AND I JUST HAD IT PULLED UP TO TELL YOU WHAT THEY WERE ON THE CALLS FOR PROPOSALS FOR BREAKOUT SESSIONS AND SOME OF THE AREAS THAT WE MIGHT ENCOMPASS COULD BE VISIONARY LEADERSHIP, EFFECTIVE GOVERNANCE, STRATEGIC ADVOCACY, EDUCATIONAL EQUITY, STUDENT SUCCESS AND STUDENT WELL-BEING.
OUR DISTRICT HAS DONE EQUITY BASED PRESENTATIONS IN THE PAST, AND I DID INVITE EVERYONE TO THINK ABOUT IF WE WOULD LIKE TO DO A BREAKOUT SESSION OR SUBMIT A PROPOSAL. THE SUBMISSION PROPOSAL WINDOW IS MAY 27TH IS THE DEADLINE.
SO WE'VE GOT JUST A LITTLE BIT OF TIME, BUT I THINK THAT MIGHT BE SOMETHING FOR US TO REFLECT UPON TO MAKE SURE WE'RE IF THERE'S SOME INTEREST, WE COULD CONNECT AND SEE WHAT A PROPOSAL WOULD LOOK LIKE ON THAT, ON SUBMITTED A PROPOSAL.
AND THE LAST PART IS DISTRICT AREA ONE, WHICH IS US SNOHOMISH COUNTY UP TO CANADA.
THEY'RE HAVING THEIR MEETING IN [INAUDIBLE] MAY 24TH.
NOW GUESS WHAT? OUR BOARD MEETING IS SAME TIME, RIGHT? BECAUSE I WAS LIKE, OH, YOU KNOW, MAYBE I CAN DO THAT, BUT SO IT'S THE SAME TIME.
SO I'LL LET THEM KNOW UNLESS SOMEBODY FROM OUR BOARD WANTS TO RUN UP THERE.
THAT'S ALL I'VE GOT RIGHT THIS SECOND.
DID I MISS ANY DEADLINES, ANY OF THESE DEADLINES YOU GUYS PAID INTO? I THINK THAT'S THAT'S WHAT'S GOING ON.
THERE'S A LOT OF OH, THERE IS ANOTHER ONE THAT I THINK WE MAY BE INTERESTED IN.
AND SO THEY'RE GOING TO GIVE US SOME POINTERS ON HOW WE CAN DO THAT.
AND I'M GOING TO ATTEND AND IT'S OPEN TO ANYONE.
I'LL MAKE SURE WE'VE GOT THE LINK.
EXCELLENT. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
DIRECTOR CHASE IS OUR LEGISLATIVE REP.
YOU DO GREAT. DIRECTOR KILGORE? THANK YOU. I JUST WANTED TO ADD, IN ADDITION TO OUR FOUR BASEBALL TEAMS PLAYING TODAY, WHICH IS REALLY EXCITING, LYNNWOOD ROYALS SOCCER IS ALSO PLAYING IN THEIR, THE BOYS SOCCER TEAM IS ALSO PLAYING IN THE PLAYOFFS THEIR PLAYOFFS TODAY SO THAT'S ALSO EXCITING.
FIRST OF ALL, I WANT TO SAY- I WAS PRIVILEGED TO GO VISIT EDMONDS-WOODWAY HIGH SCHOOL TODAY.
YOU KNOW, THERE ARE STUDENTS WORKING ON SUCH EXCITING PROJECTS, FROM ROBOTICS TO THE CULINARY PROGRAM, IS WORKING ON GINGERBREAD DESIGNS FOR GINGERBREAD STRUCTURES AND HOUSES AND SEEMS TO.
IN THE EXPLORERS CLASS, IT'S AN ENGLISH CLASS.
A COUPLE OF THE KIDS IN THERE ARE WORKING ON SONG LYRICS AND AND AND PERHAPS EVEN FULL SONGS.
[01:05:03]
AND I JUST THINK THOSE ARE VERY EXCITING PROJECTS.WHAT MAKES THEM EXCITING IS THAT THEY'RE HANDS ON THEIR PROJECTS.
THEY'RE NOT JUST READING A BOOK AND ANSWERING MULTIPLE CHOICE.
AND THAT'S THE KIND OF THING THAT WE SEE ALL OVER THE DISTRICT A LOT OF THE TIME.
I WOULD BE REMISS IF I DIDN'T BRAG ON MY KIDS.
MY ONE SON IS GRADUATING COLLEGE.
MY ELDEST IS GRADUATING COLLEGE IN JUNE, AND HE CAME UP THROUGH THE EDMONDS SYSTEM.
AND HE HAS HE'S GRADUATING, HE'S GOT A JOB AND HE'S EVIDENCE THAT SCHOOL WORKS.
AND SO ALL THE MAGIC THAT HAPPENS IN EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT IS COMING TO FRUITION.
MY YOUNGER SON ALSO WAS INVOLVED.
I GUESS THEY'VE BEEN TAKING AP TESTS THIS WEEK AND SO HE WAS INVOLVED IN THAT YESTERDAY.
HE'S INVOLVED IN DRIVING SCHOOL RIGHT NOW.
SO FAR, NO ACCIDENTS, BUT HE'S DRIVING HOME FROM SCHOOL WITH ME.
AND SO, AGAIN, I GUESS THE THEME AND I HAVE TO SAY THIS IS TOTALLY BESIDE THE POINT BUT GO SOUNDERS THEY WON CONCACAF THIS WEEK WHICH IS A HUGE, HUGE DEAL.
BUT ANYWAY, MY MY THEME HERE IS THAT SCHOOL WORKS EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT WORKS AND I'M JUST SO PLEASED TO SPREAD THE GOOD NEWS. THANK YOU.
THAT'S THE MARK. WHEN WE KNOW WE'RE A SUCCESSFUL PARENT, WHEN OUR CHILD HAS A JOB AND PAYS FOR THEIR OWN MEDICAL INSURANCE THROUGH THEIR JOB. SO THERE ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS I'D LIKE TO SAY.
KAREN. I'D LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR COMING AND CLARIFYING YOUR POINT OF VIEW.
WE APPRECIATE AND RESPECT WHAT, YOU KNOW, YOUR YOUR BELIEFS.
BUT YOU ASKED A DIRECT QUESTION AND I THOUGHT I WOULD TRY TO ANSWER YOUR DIRECT QUESTION YOU ASKED, WHY DON'T WE DO A RECOGNITION OF VOICE AND A RECOGNITION OF GIRLS? AND WHEN YOU ASKED THAT, IT MADE ME THINK OF WHAT ALWAYS COMES UP ON MOTHER'S DAY OR FATHER'S DAY WHEN THE KIDS WERE LITTLE AND THEY SAY, WHY ISN'T THERE A KIDS DAY? AND OUR ANSWER IS, EVERY DAY IS KID'S DAY, RIGHT? EVERY PARENT HAS HAD THAT QUESTION ASKED.
AND THAT'S BEEN OUR ANSWER EVERY DAY AS KIDS DAY.
MOST OF OUR STUDENTS FIT INTO TRADITIONAL ROLES.
MOST OF THEM ARE BOYS WHO ARE BORN AS BOYS.
THEY GROW UP AS BOYS AND THEY'RE COMFORTABLE.
LIFE TREATS THEM VERY WELL BECAUSE THERE ARE NO QUESTIONS THEY FIT IN A TRADITIONAL ROLE.
OUR CONCERN IS A BOARD IS TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL THE STUDENTS WHO DON'T FIT THOSE TRADITIONAL ROLES, FOR WHATEVER REASON, ALSO FEEL LIKE THEY BELONG AND ARE RESPECTED.
I DON'T KNOW OF ANY BOY OR GIRL WHO'S BEEN BULLIED OR HARASSED BECAUSE THEY WERE BORN A BOY OR GIRL.
GREW UP THAT WAY. IDENTIFIED THAT WAY.
BUT I KNOW OF A LOT OF STUDENTS AND I'VE BEEN SENT EMAILS AFTER SEVERAL OF OUR MEETINGS FROM FORMER STUDENTS WHO ARE TRANSGENDER, WHO TALKED ABOUT HOW DIFFICULT IT WAS FOR THEM TO.
BE ABLE IN SCHOOL TO BE WHO THEY REALLY ARE.
ONE PERSON IN PARTICULAR POINTED OUT THAT IF HE ONLY HAD HAD THE KIND OF SUPPORT AND ENVIRONMENT THAT WE'RE TRYING TO CREATE RIGHT NOW.
BE MUCH MORE FUNCTIONAL IN LIFE, MUCH, MUCH YOUNGER THAN HE WAS ABLE TO.
AND THAT NOW IS AS A GROWN ADULT HE'S ABLE TO, BUT THAT HE DID NOT HAVE THE KIND OF SUPPORT.
AND CARING THAT WE'RE TRYING AS A BOARD NOW TO OFFER STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT TREATED WITH THE KIND OF RESPECT THAT EVERY OTHER STUDENT IS TREATED BECAUSE THEY ARE DIFFERENT IN SOME WAY.
IN HONOR OF TEACHERS APPRECIATION WEEK, THAT WAS LAST WEEK.
I AM THRILLED TO BE ABLE TO SAY WE DO NOT HAVE TO RIFF ANY STAFF, ANY CERTIFICATED STAFF.
AND I WANT TO PARTICULARLY THANK DR.
BALDERAS AND DEBBIE CARTER AND EVERYBODY IN THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT AND EVERYBODY ELSE WHO WORKED ON THIS, THAT THERE HAVE BEEN VERY SOME SOME VERY CREATIVE STRATEGIES USED IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO OFFER A CONTRACT TO EVERY ONE OF OUR CERTIFICATED STAFF AND ENSURE THAT THEY
[01:10:08]
WILL HAVE A JOB NEXT YEAR FOR A HANDFUL.WE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TELL THEM RIGHT NOW EXACTLY WHAT SCHOOL OR WHAT POSITION THEY'LL HAVE.
BUT WE ARE PROMISING THEM A POSITION AND IT'S A VERY LOW RISK STRATEGY ON OUR PART AND A VERY HIGH SUPPORT STRATEGY FOR OUR STAFF. AND WE DO APPRECIATE EVERYTHING THAT ALL OF OUR STAFF DO.
ONE OTHER COMMENT I WANT TO DO IS BACK UP.
WHAT A LOVELY VISIT IT WAS TO EDMONDS-WOODWAY TODAY WITH DR.
AND WE ALL PARTICIPATE IN VARIOUS GRADUATION CEREMONIES.
AND IT'S AN EXCITING PART ABOUT BEING A BOARD MEMBER TO HONOR THE STUDENTS.
AND I ALSO WANT TO AGAIN CONGRATULATE ALL THE NATIONAL BOARD TEACHERS BECAUSE THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS, IT'S IT'S A LOT OF WORK FOR THEM TO EARN THAT CERTIFICATION AND THEY DESERVE IT.
SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THEY KNOW.
AND I JUST WANT TO JUST REITERATE IN TERMS OF THE THE NO REDUCTION OF FORCE, I KNOW THAT WE GOT DOWN TO JUST OVER TEN FTE THAT WE WERE LOOKING TO HAVE TO HAVE A REDUCTION IN FORCE RESOLUTION.
AND TYPICALLY WE HAVE WE HIRE ANYWHERE BETWEEN 100-125 TEACHERS EVERY YEAR, NEW TEACHERS EVERY YEAR.
AND SO WE'VE ONLY HAD 25 RESIGNATIONS OR RETIREMENTS AS OF LAST WEEK OR SO.
SO WE KNOW THAT'S GOING TO PICK UP AND WE'RE GOING TO BE PLACING PEOPLE POSITION BY POSITION WHENEVER POSSIBLE AND ALSO CREATING SOME ACTION PLANS FOR THOSE POSITIONS THAT IF NEEDED, WHICH I DON'T THINK WE WILL, BECAUSE AGAIN, MOST OF THESE WERE IN THE CORES SCIENCE, ENGLISH, LANGUAGE, ARTS AND MATH.
SO THAT'S SOMETHING WHERE WE WE HOPE TO BE ABLE TO HAVE PLACEMENTS FOR THEM.
SO REALLY, AGAIN, ONE THING, DEBBIE CARTER IN THE BACK AND HER STAFF FOR ALL THE GREAT WORK THAT'S BEEN DONE, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY I THINK, IS JUST TO REASSURE STAFF THAT THEY'RE EMPLOYED NEXT YEAR AND THAT STABILITY IN EMPLOYMENT DURING VERY TRAUMATIC 26 MONTHS IS PROBABLY THE THE BEST NEWS, I THINK, FOR FOR ANYBODY.
SO JUST WANT TO THANK YOU FOR THAT.
[17. ITEMS FOR CONSIDERATION AT FUTURE MEETINGS]
I'D LIKE TO JUST SUGGEST FOR DR.BALDERAS HERE, MAYBE TALKING TO SOME OF OUR SECONDARY PRINCIPALS AND SEEING IF NEXT FOR THE NEXT MEETING WANT TO CARVE OUT LIKE MAYBE FIVE OR SO MINUTES FOR EACH ONE OF THEM AND JUST TELL US ABOUT THEIR WINS THIS YEAR.
IT'S BEEN A TOUGH YEAR. WE'RE COMING TO THE END.
THANK YOU. DO YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THAT? NO. NO. OKAY.
SMITH. ANY OTHER WANTS, CHRISTMAS WISH LISTS? DIRECTOR CHASE? I'M SURE THERE'S GOING TO BE SOME LEGISLATIVE UPDATES AS THINGS PROGRESS, SO I'M JUST NOT SURE.
WE MIGHT WANT TO JUST HAVE A STANDING LEGISLATIVE UPDATE AS THINGS ARE HAPPENING RIGHT NOW.
OKAY. WHY DON'T WE PUT THAT ON THE AGENDA AS A REGULAR REPORT AND THEN IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANY SUMMARY, THAT WOULD BE OKAY, BECAUSE I THINK THERE MAY BE SOME POSITIONS WE MIGHT WANT TO VOTE ON. I'M JUST NOT SURE YET.
ANYTHING ELSE? OKAY. THIS MEETING IS ADJOURNED.
THANK YOU.
