EVERYBODY WHO IS IN FAVOR OF APPROVING TONIGHT'S AGENDA PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE.
ANYBODY OPPOSED PLEASE SAY NAY.
ANYBODY WHO ABSTAINS? AND THE AGENDA IS APPROVED FOR TONIGHT AS WRITTEN.
[6. SCHOOL REPORTS-6:40 pm]
NEXT ON THE AGENDA ARE OUR REPORTS, AND THE FIRST ONE, WE HAVE TWO FROM SCRIBER LAKE AND I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO ANDREA HILLMAN, WHO I AM SO PLEASED TO SEE.I WANT TO SAY HI ANDREA, AND WELCOME TO THE MEETING AND WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOU TAKING THE TIME TO SHARE WITH US ALL THE GOOD THINGS HAPPENING OVER AT SCRIBER LAKE.
HI NANCY, THANK YOU AND GOOD EVENING TO OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND OUR CABINET.
STUDENTS AND DAVE WOULD YOU ALSO PLEASE-- YES, LET'S SEE YOU.
I SEE A COUPLE OF YOU ON HERE, SO THAT'S GREAT.
THIS IS DAVE ZWASCHKA, HE'S BEEN AROUND A MINUTE.
HE'S THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL RIGHT NOW, AND SCRIBER AND OUR STUDENTS WISTERIA RAY IS HERE, THANK YOU.
WISTERIA TRANSFERRED TO US THIS FALL.
AND KATHERINE CARR IS HERE, AND CATHERINE TRANSFERRED-- WHEN DID YOU COME TO US, KATHERINE? I THINK IT WAS FEBRUARY OF LAST YEAR.
YES, FULL REMOTE MODE, BUT HERE YOU [INAUDIBLE] ANYWAY.
LET'S SEE. AND AS ANY OTHER STUDENTS POP ON, WE'LL JUST INTRODUCE THEM AT THAT POINT, BUT--.
ANYWAY, WE DO HAVE SOMETHING TO SHARE WITH YOU TONIGHT ABOUT ONE OF THE COOL THINGS THAT HAPPENS AT SCRIBER LAKE, THEY ARE CALLED OUR FALL MINI COURSES.
SO I THINK SOMEBODY HAS A SLIDESHOW.
AND YOU CAN ADVANCE BECAUSE THE NEXT ONE IS INTRODUCING OUR STUDENTS, WHICH WE'VE DONE, AND SO WE'LL GO TO THE NEXT--.
KEEP GOING, ONE MORE. SO THIS IS A LITTLE EXPLANATION ON WHAT OUR FALL MINI COURSES ARE.
DAVE, WOULD YOU TALK US THROUGH WHAT WE WHAT THESE ARE? SURE. TWICE A YEAR, WE STOP OUR REGULAR CLASSES AND WE HAVE ONE WEEK OF MINI COURSES WHERE STUDENTS CAN SIGN UP FOR ANY NUMBER OF COURSES BASED ON THEIR INTEREST AND ALSO INTEREST THAT THE TEACHERS HAVE.
WE'VE RUN THESE FOR A LONG TIME, THEY'RE THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE YEAR.
WE HAVE ONE IN THE FALL AND ONE IN THE SPRING, AND THE CONTENT IS REALLY DRIVEN BY, AGAIN, STUDENT INTEREST AND TEACHER INTEREST.
THE CONTENT'S DESIGNED TO BE VERY EXPERIENTIAL, AND STUDENTS WILL ATTEND THESE CLASSES ALL DAY LONG, ALL WEEK LONG.
SO THEY REALLY HAVE A CHANCE TO GET IN DEPTH AND LEARN ABOUT A PARTICULAR TOPIC AND ALSO MAKE A STRONGER COMMUNITY BY MEETING SOME NEW STUDENTS AND SPENDING REALLY A PRETTY
[00:05:01]
INTENSE WEEK WITH THEM. AND ANDREA, I WILL SAY TO THAT, I THINK AMY [INAUDIBLE] HAS JUST JOINED US, SO I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO AMY.ARE YOU HERE? I THINK AMY'S AT WORK--.
NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE. THIS IS THE SLIDE THAT JUST SHOWS YOU THE MINI COURSES WE HAD THIS FALL. WE HAD DINNER TIME.
YOU CAN ADVANCE THIS ONE, WE DON'T HAVE A STUDENT HERE TO TALK ABOUT THIS ONE.
ALL RIGHT, KATHERINE CARR, CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THIS MINE COURSE? DON'T DIE OUT THERE WAS A MINI COURSE BASICALLY SURROUNDING HOW TO SURVIVE OUT IN NATURE, BASICALLY BACKPACKING, WHAT YOU WOULD NEED TO PACK, AND FUNNY ENOUGH IN THE PHOTO, I'M DEMONSTRATING THROUGH ART ON THE WHITEBOARD, HOW TO GIVE SPLINTS OUT IN THE WILDERNESS.
ONE THING I TOOK AWAY FROM IT IS IF YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT'S HAPPENING AND WHAT'S GOING ON AROUND YOU, IT'S REALLY NOT THAT SCARY, BUT KIND OF FUN.
THANK YOU, KATHERINE. ALL RIGHT, NEXT SLIDE.
HI, I'M WISTERIA, I'M A JUNIOR HERE, AS ANDREA SAID, I JOINED THIS YEAR.
ENDLESS BLUE WAS A VERY FUN MINI COURSE WHERE WE STUDIED MARINE LIFE AND THROUGH A TABLETOP ROLE PLAYING GAME AND THROUGH DISSECTIONS AND FUN ACTIVITIES.
WHAT I REALLY LEARNED, AND ONE BIG TAKEAWAY FOR ME WAS THAT, HUMANS WHEN WE INTERACT WITH THE OCEAN, IT CAUSES VERY BIG THINGS TO HAPPEN, SO WE SHOULD LIMIT HUMAN INTERACTION WITH THE OCEAN AND ITS MARINE LIFE.
THANK YOU, WISTERIA. NEXT SLIDE [INAUDIBLE].
LET'S SEE, WE HAD A CRASH FILMMAKING COURSE.
I DON'T THINK ANY STUDENTS ARE HERE AT THE MOMENT.
DAVE YOU DON'T SEE ANY OF THAT [INAUDIBLE]? LET'S SEE. [INAUDIBLE].
ALL RIGHT. AND THEN NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE.
THIS WAS MINDFUL FIBERS, I WILL MENTION-- YOU CAN SEE KIDS ARE LEARNING HOW TO--.
THEY'RE DOING MINDFULNESS A LOT EVERY DAY, BUT THEY'RE ALSO LEARNING HOW TO KNIT AND DO SOME WEAVING. NEXT SLIDE.
ALL RIGHT, WE HAVE AMY [INAUDIBLE] HERE TO TELL US ABOUT HER ART HISTORY [INAUDIBLE].
SO FOR ART HISTORY, IT'S BASICALLY ART AND HISTORY CREDITS.
WE WOULD LEARN-- [INAUDIBLE] GET THE PARAGRAPH TALKING ABOUT AN ART PIECE AND WE WOULD INCORPORATE IT INTO THE ART WE WERE WORKING ON.
SO WE HAD TO DRAW LIKE PORTRAIT STYLED AFTER LIKE VAN GOGH, AND WE HAD TO RESEARCH THE HISTORY OF THE ART WE WERE MAKING AND HOW MUCH WE LEARNED FROM HISTORY BY DOING ART.
AND WE COULD MAKE UP TO LIKE AS MUCH PIECES AS WE WANTED TO IN THAT CLASS, AND IT WAS A REALLY FUN CLASS, AND I REALLY LIKED MAKING ALL THE STUFF WE DID.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH, AMY.
I WILL MENTION THAT MANY OF OUR MINI COURSES THIS YEAR HAVE BEEN ENHANCED BY OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH A NONPROFIT CALLED FOUNDRY10, AND THEY HAVE PROVIDED SOME OF THE INSTRUCTORS AND SOME OF THE MATERIALS THAT HAVE REALLY BEEN ABLE TO MAKE OUR MINI COURSES BIGGER THAN THEY'VE EVER BEEN.
ALL RIGHT. I THINK THAT CONCLUDES OUR CONTENT ON MINI COURSES FOR THE FALL, AND WE WERE GOING TO OPEN IT UP AND SEE IF THERE WERE ANY QUESTIONS THAT THE BOARD WANTED TO ASK.
ANDREA, I'M A LITTLE CURIOUS, HOW WERE THE TOPICS CHOSEN FOR THE MINI COURSES AND HOW DID KIDS GET TO CHOOSE WHAT THEY-- OR HOW WERE THEY ASSIGNED OR CHOSEN TO WHICH ONES THEY TOOK? WELL, IT'S A CAREFULLY BUILT MATRIX, BUT A LOT OF TIMES THEY ARE KIND OF PASSION PROGRAM PROJECTS FOR TEACHERS OR STUDENTS, SOMETHING THAT THEY'RE REALLY INTERESTED IN. BUT WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE A BROAD ARRAY OF CREDIT
[00:10:04]
OPPORTUNITIES BECAUSE A LOT OF TIMES OUR KIDS ARE CREDIT DEFICIENT IN CERTAIN AREAS, AND THIS IS A GREAT WAY FOR THEM TO HAVE THAT CHANCE.AND THEN STUDENTS GET TO CHOOSE, LIKE THEY REGISTER FOR ANY CLASS, THEY KIND OF RANK ORDER THEIR PREFERENCE FOR THE MINI COURSES THAT THEY'D LIKE TO BE IN.
AND SO THEN ONCE THEY SUBMIT THAT THEN COUNSELORS LOOKING AT THE GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS AND WHAT KIDS MIGHT NEED AND WHERE THEY'RE AT IN THEIR CAREER WITH US, THAT'S HOW THEY GET PLACED IN [INAUDIBLE].
THE FILMMAKING LOOK REALLY INTERESTING, DID THESE STUDENTS COMPLETE FILMS, ACTUAL FILMS THAT WE COULD TAKE A LOOK AT? THEY-- IT WAS-- SO WE HAVE A NEW GRAPHIC ARTS AND VIDEO TEACHER AT SCRIBER THIS YEAR, AND SO THEIR CHALLENGE WAS TO USE SONG LYRICS AND IN FIVE DAYS CREATE A SCRIPT AND STAGE POSITION AND THEN FILM IT AND THEN EDIT IT AND THEN PUSH IT OUT.
SO THEY LEARN THAT IN FIVE DAYS WAS NOT QUITE ENOUGH TIME, BUT THEY DID HAVE THE WHOLE SCRIPT WRITTEN. THEY DID GET ALL THE FILMING DONE AND THEN THE CLASS IS OVER.
SO WE ARE STILL ANTICIPATING, WITH GLEE, THIS FILM, AT SOME POINT, BUT THE FILM PART IS STILL IN PROCESS.
GREAT, THANK YOU. I REALLY APPRECIATED HEARING FROM THE STUDENTS DESCRIBING THE MINI COURSES, SO THIS WAS ACTUALLY REALLY FUN.
SO THANK YOU. DID I HEAR CORRECTLY, ONE OF THEM WAS MINDFULNESS BASED? WAS THAT--? YEAH.
WELL, I JUST WANTED TO MENTION THAT I ACTUALLY RECENTLY STARTED PRACTICING SOME MINDFULNESS AND MEDITATION STUFF, AND IT'S BEEN A GREAT LIFE SKILL FOR ME TO LIKE, SORT OF, REGULATE, MANAGE STRESS STUFF LIKE THAT.
AND I WISH I WOULD HAVE KNOWN ABOUT IT 20 YEARS EARLIER, HONESTLY, SO I THINK THAT'S A GREAT SKILL TO BE TEACHING THE KIDS.
LIKE, THERE'S A LOT OF TIMES WE'RE TAKING THAT STEP BACK AND TAKING A BREATH AND REALLY FOCUSING ON WHAT'S IN FRONT OF YOU IS A REALLY GREAT LIFE SKILL TO HAVE, SO IT'S AWESOME.
I ALSO WANTED TO COMMEND THE DON'T DIE OUT THERE COURSE.
FIRST, OF COURSE, THE TITLE WAS WONDERFUL, BUT ALSO THOSE SKILLS--.
HOPEFULLY YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE THE MOST EXTREME OF THOSE SKILLS ALL THE TIME UNLESS IT'S SOMETHING YOU WANT TO DO, BUT IT DOES GIVE PEOPLE A SENSE OF STRENGTH, INNER STRENGTH AND CONFIDENCE. AND SO I WAS REALLY PLEASED TO SEE THAT AND WISH THAT I COULD TAKE IT TOO.
THANKS TO ONE OF OUR STAFF MEMBERS WE RECEIVED A GRANT TO PURCHASE 14 TENTS, SLEEPING BAGS, COOKWARE, YOU KNOW, BOOTS, ALL THE THINGS THAT STUDENTS WILL NEED TO BE OUTSIDE SO THEY REALLY COULD EXPERIENCE THE OUTDOORS AS THEY SHOULD, AND THIS-- ALL THESE MATERIALS WILL ALSO BE USED IN OUR FOURTH QUARTER CLASS CALLED INSTEP, WHICH IS A NINE WEEK FULLY IMMERSION PROGRAM OF AN OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE WHERE 14 OR 15 STUDENTS WILL SPEND MOST OF THEIR FOURTH QUARTER OUTSIDE HIKING, CAMPING, GOING OUT TO THE OLYMPIC PENINSULA AND SPENDING THREE DAYS, GOING TO ORCAS ISLAND AND SPENDING TWO DAYS, AND REALLY LEARNING THE SKILLS NEEDED TO BE OUTSIDE.
IN ADDITION TO LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND MINDFULNESS, WHICH IS SOMETHING THAT WE REALLY TRIED TO IMPLEMENT ACROSS OUR--.
OUR TEACHERS HAVE REALLY TAKEN IT ON AS SOMETHING THAT'S BENEFICIAL FOR STUDENTS, BUT ALSO BENEFICIAL FOR THEM AS WELL, BECAUSE I THINK WE'RE ALL UNDER, YOU KNOW, STRESS AND THESE ARE REALLY HELPFUL STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES AND REALLY A WAY OF LIFE FOR US.
AND NOW WE'RE PARTNERING WITH A GROUP CALLED SPACE BETWEEN, WHICH IS A COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION THAT PROVIDES TEACHERS WHO'VE COME IN TO SCRIBER A LAKE FOR THE FIRST PART OF A SCHOOL YEAR TO TEACH MINDFULNESS TO THREE OF OUR CLASSES OVER THE LAST SIX MONTHS OR SO, AND OUR HOPE IS THAT WE CAN CONTINUE THAT WORK IN THE FUTURE.
THANK YOU. I'D ALSO LIKE TO INVITE ANY OF OUR STUDENT ADVISORS WHO-- ON THE BOARD, WHO MIGHT HAVE A QUESTION TO GO AHEAD AND FEEL WELCOME TO ASK.
I WAS-- FIRST OF ALL, I'M REALLY INTERESTED IN ALL THIS.
IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THIS CAN BE ADOPTED INTO OTHER HIGH SCHOOLS OR IS THIS SPECIFIC TO
[00:15:03]
SCRIBER LAKE? I THINK THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION.IT TAKES A LOT OF WORK AND A LOT OF ENERGY TO CURATE THESE COURSES FOR ABOUT 180 STUDENTS, SO BRINGING IT TO SCALE IN A COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOL MIGHT BE REALLY, REALLY HARD. IT'S ALSO EXPENSIVE BECAUSE WE NEED MORE MATERIALS AND WE HAVE TWO TEACHERS PER COURSE, AND SO IF THAT MIGHT BE LIKE A DEAL BREAKER BECAUSE THERE ARE JUST SO MANY MORE STUDENTS IN A LARGE HIGH SCHOOL.
BUT DEFINITELY LIKE THE CREATIVITY AND THE INNOVATION IS-- [INAUDIBLE] REALLY FUN, AND SO I THINK THERE COULD BE SOME INNOVATION, I WOULD SAY, IN ANY OTHER PROGRAM.
ALL RIGHT, THANK YOU. YEAH, I AGREE WITH LEAH, THAT WAS SUCH A GREAT PRESENTATION THAT I THINK IT MAKES US ALL WANT TO HAVE THAT IN OUR OWN HIGH SCHOOLS AS WELL.
BUT THANK YOU, THAT WAS REALLY GREAT.
I BET MR. SCHWAB IS LISTENING TO THIS WITH GREAT INTEREST IN TERMS OF PERHAPS THINKING ABOUT HOW THAT COULD GET OUT TO MORE STUDENTS.
[LAUGHTER] GOOD EVENING, EVERYBODY.
HAVING BEEN UP THERE AND SEEING THE MINI COURSES IN ACTION, IT'S JUST FANTASTIC TO SEE HOW ENGAGED THE STUDENTS ARE, AND ABSOLUTELY, I SHARE THE SENTIMENT OF THE STUDENTS.
I THINK A LOT OF IT IS, JUST AS MS. HILLMAN POINTED OUT, IT'S THE BRINGING THIS TO SCALE IN A 1500-1600 STUDENT HIGH SCHOOL IS SOMETHING THAT--.
OBVIOUSLY, IT'S SOMETHING THAT WOULD REQUIRE A LOT OF WORK AND IT'S NOT SOMETHING THAT WE CAN'T DO, IT'S JUST THAT THERE'S A FAIR AMOUNT OF PLANNING THAT WE WOULD NEED TO DO, BUT I CERTAINLY THINK THERE'S SOMETHING TO LEARN FROM THE WORK THAT SCRIBE IS DOING WITH REGARD TO REALLY IDENTIFYING COURSES BASED ON STUDENT INTEREST AND GIVING STUDENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE THINGS THAT ARE REALLY-- THEY'RE REALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT.
IS THIS THE FIRST YEAR THAT THIS HAS BEEN DONE OR HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN DONE? THIS IS A LONG STANDING TRADITION AND THE LAST TIME WE WERE ABLE TO DO THEM, THOUGH, WAS THE FALL OF 2019, AND SCRIBER, WE DON'T HAVE A LOT OF ELECTIVES BECAUSE WE'RE REALLY SMALL AND WE HAVE A SMALL STAFF.
AND SO THIS IS KIND OF THE ANTIDOTE TO THAT, THAT FOR THESE TWO WEEKS, WE CAN OFFER SOMETHING [INAUDIBLE] LIKE SUPER ENGAGING AND NOTHING REALLY CLOSE TO WHAT WE'RE DOING IN OUR OTHER CLASSES. AND SO WE KIND OF HOLD THAT IN RESERVE WITH KIND OF A REPLACEMENT FOR A LOT OF ELECTIVES, AND THEY ARE FUN AND SUPER HIGH INTEREST, BUT WE'VE DONE THEM FOR EONS, BUT WE WERE SO HAPPY TO BE ABLE TO DO THEM AGAIN NOW IN PERSON.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS ON THIS PART OF THE SCRIBER LAKE PRESENTATION? WELL, WE REALLY WANT TO THANK THE STUDENTS, I KNOW, ANDREA, YOU'RE GOING TO GO AHEAD AND ALSO TALK ABOUT THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN AND OF COURSE, THE STUDENTS ARE WELCOME TO STAY ON AND LISTEN SINCE THEY'RE PART OF THIS OR THEY CAN--.
THEY MIGHT HAVE HOMEWORK, YOU KNOW, BUT IF ANY OF THE STUDENTS LEAVE, WE REALLY WANT TO THANK YOU. THIS WAS A DEFINITE HIGHLIGHT TO GET TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH THESE MINI COURSES, IT SOUNDS REALLY ENGAGING AND INVIGORATING.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU, EVERYBODY.
I THINK WE CAN MOVE TO THE NEXT SLIDE SHOW, WHICH IS AROUND OUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN.
WELL, I THINK I CAN JUST START IF HE GETS THE [INAUDIBLE] PRESENTATION OR THE [INAUDIBLE] PRESENTATION FIRED UP, BUT WE HAVE THREE GOALS THAT WE HAVE FOCUSED ON FOR YEARS.
BUT THE GOAL THAT I THOUGHT I'D GIVE YOU AN UPDATE ON TONIGHT IS OUR GOAL OF INCREASING
[00:20:04]
OUR ON-TIME GRADUATION RATE.IN 2018, THE STATE OF WASHINGTON IDENTIFIED ANY HIGH SCHOOL DESIGNATED AS A COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOL AS HAVING OR AS BEING ELIGIBLE FOR SUPPORT FROM THE OFFICE OF SCHOOL AND SYSTEM IMPROVEMENT.
I SEE YOUR NOTES, AND I MEAN, I GUESS I CAN JUST TALK IT THROUGH WITH YOU, I HAVE IT HERE IF I CAN SHARE A SCREEN, BUT [INAUDIBLE] IN THE CHAT ROOM [INAUDIBLE].
CHARELL, IT IS ON THE AGENDA IN TERMS OF WHAT WE GET NEXT TO THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN.
THERE YOU GO. SO WE CAN GO TO SLIDE TWO.
ANYWAY, SO WE FELL UNDER THAT UMBRELLA OF A HIGH SCHOOL THAT HAD ON-TIME GRADUATION RATES LOWER THAN 65 PERCENT, AND I JUST DID WANT TO POINT OUT THAT THE ON-TIME GRADUATION RATE AT OUR SCHOOL HAS MORE THAN DOUBLED FROM THE [INAUDIBLE] SCHOOL YEAR LAST SCHOOL YEAR.
WE GREW FROM 21.4 TO 47.4, AND FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR, WE ARE PREDICTING, OR HOPING, OUR GOAL WAS THAT WE INCREASED BY FIVE PERCENT [INAUDIBLE] PERCENT GRADUATION.
NEXT SLIDE. THE WAY THAT WE GO ABOUT OUR WORK AT SCRIBER IS THAT IT'S REALLY BASED IN STUDENT DATA. THERE'S A WHOLE LOT OF DATA THAT I LOOK AT AND ANALYZE THAT WE USE TO SET OUR GOALS AND TO KEEP US ON TRACK.
THINGS WE LOOK AT ARE THINGS LIKE CREDIT, CREDIT'S EARNED PER TERM, ARE STUDENTS EARNING THE AMOUNT OF CREDITS THAT THEY WOULD NEED TO FINISH THEIR SIX CREDITS THEY NEED TO EARN EVERY YEAR TO BE ABLE TO BE CONSIDERED ON TRACK, THINGS LIKE THAT.
WE LOOK AT ATTENDANCE RATES GRAD PLANS AND ALL THAT KIND OF STUFF.
AND THEN WE PUT THAT INTO ACTION WITH OUR INTENSIVE PROGRESS MONITORING AND OUR CHECKING MODEL, WHICH IS REALLY, IT JUST INFUSES EVERYTHING WE DO AT SCRIBER.
SO ONE THING YOU MIGHT SEE, OR DO SEE, IF YOU PARTICIPATE IN SCRIBER ARE THESE REALLY DETAILED GRADUATION PLANS FOR SENIORS WHERE THEY CAN SEE EVERY TIME THEY GET A NEW VERSION FROM THEIR COUNSELOR, WHICH CLASSES THEY'RE ENROLLED IN FOR EACH QUARTER, HOW MUCH CREDIT THEY'RE WORTH, ANY EXTRA CREDITS THEY NEED TO FINISH IN ORDER TO GRADUATE AND ANY OTHER MILESTONES.
SO THERE'S A LOT OF PROGRESS MONITORING THAT GOES IN HELPING STUDENTS UNDERSTAND WHERE THEY'RE AT AS WE GO AND FAMILIES UNDERSTAND.
STUDENTS DO SELF REFLECTIONS EVERY QUARTER.
WHEN THEY GET TO BE A SENIOR, THIS IS SOMETHING THAT'S KIND OF IN THE ETHER OF SCRIBER, WHEN THE QUARTER ENDS AND WHEN WE LOOK AT WHERE WE STAND, WE HAVE STUDENT LED CONFERENCES SEVERAL TIMES A YEAR AND THEN THERE ARE SOME OTHER TOOLS THAT WE USE, THAT I'LL SHOW YOU IN A LITTLE BIT, AND ALSO, WE JUST, YOU KNOW, THE CHECK IN MODEL IS LIKE, IT'S NOT SOMETHING WE CHECK OFF.
I WOULD SAY THAT IT'S JUST OUR WAY OF BEING AT SCRIBER.
KNOW STUDENT BY NAME AND BY STORY, BECAUSE EVERY STUDENT-- WE WANT THEM TO FEEL SEEN AND HEARD AND UNDERSTOOD AT OUR SCHOOL.
NEXT SLIDE. THIS IS ONE OF THE TOOLS WE USE, IT'S A GREAT THING, I'VE BEEN SHARING IT WITH SOME OF THE PRINCIPALS THAT I WORK WITHIN OSSI, BUT THIS IS AVAILABLE IN SKYWARD AND ALMOST NOBODY KNOWS IT EXISTS, BUT IT'S A REPORT YOU CAN RUN.
IT'S SO EASY TO READ VERSUS SOME OF THOSE REALLY LONG-- ALL THE COLUMNS AND ROWS OF CREDITS. THIS JUST SHOWS YOU WHAT YOU NEED, HOW MUCH YOU EARN, HOW MANY ARE IN PROGRESS, HOW MANY YOU HAVE LEFT IN CREDITS, WHICH EXAMS YOU PASSED, YOUR HIGH SCHOOL AND BEYOND ON PLAN IF YOU FINISH THAT AND YOUR WASHINGTON STATE HISTORY, WHICH IS ONE OF THE TOOLS WE USE IT'S CALL THE GRAD REQUIREMENT CHECKLIST, AND WE CAN JUST GENERATE IT IN SKYWARD.
NEXT SLIDE. THIS IS A PICTURE OF ONE OF THE OTHER WAYS THAT WE USE TO HELP ALL THE NUMBERS ON A SCREEN TRANSLATE INTO SOMETHING MEANINGFUL TO STUDENTS, THIS IS OUR ROAD TO SUCCESS. EVERY DOT ON THIS ROAD TO SUCCESS IS WORTH A QUARTER CREDIT, AND AS KIDS, EVERY QUARTER, KIDS WHEN THEY'RE IN THAT REFLECTION PROCESS, PULL OUT THEIR ROAD TO SUCCESS AND THEY CAN PUT MORE STICKERS.
THEY FILL UP THEIR ROADS TO SUCCESS EVERY QUARTER CREDIT THEY EARN WITH A VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF HOW CLOSE OR FAR AWAY GRADUATION IS FOR THEM.
[00:25:04]
THIS IS A PICTURE OF A STUDENT THIS FALL WHO--.HE'S AMAZING AND, YOU KNOW, SOMETIMES IT'S BEEN A STRUGGLE FOR HIM AT SCHOOL, BUT HE WAS SO EXCITED WHEN HE WAS FILLING OUT HIS ROAD TO SUCCESS BECAUSE HE JUST GOT ALL THOSE ORANGE STICKERS AND IT FILLED ALL UP AND HE WAS SO EXCITED BECAUSE HE REALIZED GRADUATION WAS WITHIN REACH FOR HIM.
SO THAT'S ANOTHER ONE OF THE TOOLS THAT WE USE TO HELP ALL OF THAT BEHIND THE SCENES STUFF MAKE SENSE AND FEEL ACTIONABLE FOR OUR STUDENTS.
NEXT SLIDE. SO, WHERE ARE WE AT? WE REALLY THINK THAT WE DIVIDE OUR SENIOR CLASS INTO FOUR QUADRANTS, THE TOP RIGHT HAND ONE IS, ARE THEY ON TRACK WITH CREDIT', AND THEY HAVE HIGH ATTENDANCE.
THE TOP LEFT ONE IS THEY'RE CREDIT DEFICIENT, BUT THEY HAVE GOOD ATTENDANCE.
THE BOTTOM RIGHT ON TRACK WITH CREDIT, BUT THEIR ATTENDANCE IS LOW, AND THE BOTTOM LEFT THEIR CREDIT DEFICIENT AND THEY HAVE LOW ATTENDANCE.
AND SO WE FEEL PRETTY CONFIDENT THAT ALL 28 OF THE ONES IN THE TOP RIGHT HAND QUADRANT WILL BE GRADUATING.
IF, JUST THOSE GRADUATE WOULD BE OUT OF 42 PERCENT ON-TIME GRADUATION RATE.
IN THE YELLOW QUADRANT, IF THOSE QUADRANTS IF ALL OF THE STUDENTS IN THERE GRADUATED, WE'D HAVE AN 82 PERCENT ON-TIME GRADUATION RATE.
THAT IS LIKELY UNREALISTIC, THOUGH, SO WE PREDICT WE WILL HIT OUR GOAL OF 52 PERCENT ON TIME THIS YEAR AND LIKELY EXCEED IT.
SOME OF THE OTHER DATA WE LOOK AT LIKE, DID WE COMPLETE ALL OF THE CONFERENCES THAT WE COULD IN AN 89 PERCENT COMPLETION RATE THIS FALL? AND OUR GRAD PLANS ARE ALL COMPLETE AND ACTUALLY SO MANY OF THEM HAVE BEEN REVISED.
SO ONE HUNDRED PERCENT OF THOSE ARE COMPLETED.
ALL RIGHT, NEXT SLIDE. THERE WE GO.
THAT'S JUST A LITTLE UPDATE ON HOW WE USE DATA AND MONITOR PROGRESS ON ONE OF OUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT GOALS. ANDREA, THAT WAS SOME VERY IMPRESSIVE INCREASE IN RATES OF GRADUATION RATES.
SO I JUST REALLY APPRECIATED HAVING THAT UPDATE.
THANK YOU CARIN. TO GO ALONG WITH THAT, I JUST HAD ONE QUESTION FOR YOU, WE DON'T HAVE TO DO A FULL POSTMORTEM ON WHAT WAS GOING ON IN 2015-2016, BUT WHAT CHANGES DID YOU GUYS MAKE BETWEEN THEN AND NOW DO YOU THINK THAT GOT YOU THAT DOUBLE RATE OVER WHAT YOU HAD? WELL, I THINK THAT IT HAS BEEN SOME OF JUST THAT INTENTIONALITY AND FOCUS BECAUSE THE STATE DID COME ALONGSIDE US IN THE 2018-19 SCHOOL YEAR, SO I THINK THAT'S PART OF IT.
I THINK THAT THE WHOLE DISTRICT AND EVERYWHERE IS PAYING MORE ATTENTION TO HOW MANY CREDIT STUDENTS ARE EARNING ON THEIR WAY THROUGH.
AND SO, YOU KNOW, I JUST I THINK THAT IT'S KIND OF--.
I'VE ALSO HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF BEING AT SCRIBER NOW, THIS IS MY SEVENTH YEAR, I JUST HAD SEVEN IN JANUARY AND I'VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO HIRE OVER HALF OF MY STAFF.
AND I THINK THAT MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE TO JUST THE NATURE OF THE PEOPLE WHO ARE JUST SO WELCOMING AND CREATE THAT SPACE WHERE STUDENTS WANT TO BE [INAUDIBLE].
WELL, THAT'S AWESOME. I MEAN, IT'S JUST GREAT TO BE ABLE TO GO FROM A PLACE WHERE ONLY, YOU KNOW, A QUARTER OF THE KIDS ARE GRADUATING NOW TO ALMOST HALF, AND HOPEFULLY WE CAN CONTINUE TO IMPROVE ON THAT.
SO I THINK YOU GUYS ARE DOING A GREAT JOB.
THANK YOU. I'D LIKE TO SAY I REALLY LOVE TO SEE YOU FOCUSING ON THE GRADUATION RATE BECAUSE THAT'S THE CULMINATING PIECE, THAT'S THE PIECE THAT WILL GET THE KIDS ON THE TRAJECTORY FOR SUCCESS IN LIFE, FOR WHATEVER THEY WANT TO DO NEXT.
AND THE CREDITS ARE A STEP TOWARD THERE.
I'VE ALWAYS BEEN IMPRESSED WITH THE STRATEGIES THAT SCRIBER USES, BUT I THINK, ANDREA, YOU'RE DOING A GREAT JOB AND I--.
THE--. IT'S SHOWING IN YOUR DATA, BUT WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT THE INTENTIONALITY, THAT'S CLEARLY THERE, YOUR PROGRESS, MONITORING, YOUR REGULAR PROGRESS MONITORING, YOUR CHECKING IN WITH THEM, EVEN THE MAP WHERE THEY'RE KEEPING TRACK, YOU KNOW, IT'S VERY CONCRETE, THEY'RE SEEING THEIR SUCCESS, THEY'RE SEEING THAT THEY'RE ABLE TO GET THERE.
AND THAT'S HOW WE HELP KIDS TO FEEL LIKE THEY CAN MAKE IT, PARTICULARLY THE KIDS WHO'VE BEEN STRUGGLING FOR WHATEVER CHALLENGES THAT THEY MAY HAVE BEEN FACING IN LIFE.
OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS FROM--.
[00:30:01]
DEBORAH? I JUST WANTED TO ASK IF THERE'S ANYTHING THAT THE BOARD CAN DO TO CONTINUE TO HELP SUPPORT YOUR PROGRESS? THAT IS AN INCREDIBLE QUESTION.I HAVE A LONG LIST OF THINGS THAT I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE SUPPORT WITH, BUT, YOU KNOW, I JUST THINK THAT I WOULD LOVE FOR PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT OUR SCHOOL AND ANY POSITIVE PR THAT WE CAN GET, YOU KNOW, THIS HAS [INAUDIBLE].
I CALLED A MOM ON FRIDAY FOR HER SON, HAD TO COME TO MY SCHOOL KIND OF NOT BY CHOICE THIS FALL. AND SHE JUST SAID TO ME-- BECAUSE I WAS JUST CALLING HER BECAUSE HE HAD HELPED ANOTHER STUDENT WHO HAD HAD A SEIZURE AND HE WAS JUST BEING SWEET AS ONE OF THOSE LIKE, LET ME END MY FRIDAY ON A GOOD NOTE, SORT OF CALL, AND SHE JUST SAID, YOU KNOW, I WISH-- THIS WAS LIKE THE DREAM THAT WE DIDN'T KNOW WE HAD.
HE IS SO HAPPY AT THAT SCHOOL AND HE'S SO COMFORTABLE AND YOU JUST-- HE'S LIKE, WE NEVER EVEN CONSIDERED IT, AND HE JUST FEELS SO WONDERFUL THERE.
SO, YOU KNOW, AND HE'S NOT THERE, NECESSARILY BECAUSE HE STRUGGLED IN SCHOOL, BUT HE JUST FEELS LIKE HE'S FOUND A HOME, AND SO I THINK THAT WOULD BE THE ONE THING THAT I REALLY ASK OF OUR BOARD IS, YOU KNOW, WE DO WORK WITH STUDENTS WHO HAVE STRUGGLED, BUT WE CAN BE A REALLY APPROPRIATE AND KIND AND INVIGORATING PLACE FOR A FULL SPECTRUM OF STUDENTS.
THANK YOU. AND SEND THE REST OF THE LIST AT GUSTAVO BALDERAS.
I THINK YOU'RE APPROVING A COUPLE OF OUR FIELD TRIPS LATER ON TONIGHT.
I DON'T WANT TO DIMINISH WHAT YOU SAID, I THINK THAT'S--.
I'VE HEARD VERY GOOD THINGS ABOUT THE SCHOOL, AND WHEN I'VE ATTENDED YOUR GRADUATIONS, I ALSO SEE THAT A LOT OF YOUR STUDENTS ARE SUCCEEDING OR GOING ON TO COLLEGE.
AND COLLEGE IS NOT THE ONLY PLACE TO SUCCEED, BUT THEY'RE EARNING SCHOLARSHIPS AND THEY'RE GOING TO COLLEGE AND SOME OF THEM ARE GOING INTO OTHER THINGS.
SO IT'S NOT ONLY FOR KIDS WHO HAVE CHALLENGES ACADEMICALLY OR, YOU KNOW--.
AND SO I WILL BE SURE TO SHARE THAT INFORMATION, AND I HOPE THAT THE DISTRICT, ESPECIALLY THESE WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE KIDS TO GET HANDS ON AND IN-DEPTH, YOU KNOW, INTEREST BASED, PASSION BASED DISCOVERY, I THINK IS REALLY WONDERFUL.
AND I HOPE THAT MORE PEOPLE LEARN ABOUT YOU, AND OF COURSE, I'D LIKE TO BE PART OF THAT TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN.
THANK YOU. IN THINKING ABOUT, ANDREA, WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT GETTING THE WORD OUT.
IT SEEMS TO ME THAT A REALLY IMPORTANT VEHICLE IS THROUGH ALL OF THE COUNSELORS AT ALL OF THE HIGH SCHOOLS THAT THEY, AND I DON'T KNOW TO WHAT EXTENT THERE ARE CONVERSATIONS WITH THEM, BUT WHEN THEY MEET WITH A STUDENT TO THINK ABOUT WHAT--.
IS SCRIBER THE RIGHT PLACE FOR THAT KID LIKE THE MOTHER WHO YOU TALKED TO, WHO SAID WE DIDN'T KNOW, BUT WOW, YOU KNOW, THIS IS LIKE HE FOUND A HOME.
THERE GOT TO BE A LOT OF KIDS LIKE THAT, AND IT SEEMS LIKE THE COUNSELORS WOULD BE A REALLY IMPORTANT VEHICLE FOR COMMUNICATING THAT AS THEY MEET ONE ON ONE WITH KIDS AND THINK ABOUT WHO WOULD THIS REALLY BE BENEFICIAL FOR? SO I GUESS I'M WONDERING, TO WHAT EXTENT IS THAT CURRENTLY HAPPENING OR TO-- COULD IT HAPPEN MORE? OUR HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELORS ARE AMAZING.
THEY DO A WONDERFUL JOB OF REFERRING STUDENTS OVER.
I WISH THERE WERE A MECHANISM WHERE WE COULD GET A STUDENT A LITTLE EARLIER WHEN WE RECOGNIZE THEY'RE FALLING BEHIND.
I MEAN, GETTING A SENIOR WITH THREE CREDITS IS A LOT DIFFERENT THAN GETTING A JUNIOR WITH THREE. LIKE, WE'VE GOT SOME TIME TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN THE EARLIER WE GET THE STUDENT.
SO I THINK THEY HAVE GIANT CASELOAD AND THEY JUST THEY REALLY DO HAVE A TIGHT RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR COUNSELORS AND THEY DO A LOT OF REFERRALS AND WE ENCOURAGE THEM TO
[00:35:06]
COME UP, BUT, YOU KNOW, WITH COVID IT'S BEEN ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO HAVE VERY MANY GUESTS.BUT I THINK THEY'RE DOING A GREAT JOB, AND IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO THINK ABOUT A MECHANISM THAT MIGHT PING A FEW STUDENTS A LITTLE BIT EARLIER.
DO ANY OF OUR STUDENT ADVISERS HAVE A QUESTION OR COMMENT? I GIVE A LOT OF WAIT TIME.
[LAUGHTER] ANY OTHER QUESTIONS ARE COMMENTS FROM ANYBODY ? ANDREA, THANK YOU SO MUCH, I THINK THIS WAS REALLY HELPFUL, AND I HOPE THAT THE PUBLIC WHO IS WATCHING THE BOARD MEETING IS ANOTHER VEHICLE FOR SEEING SCRIBER AS A REALLY GREAT PLACE FOR MEETING KIDS NEEDS AND HELPING KIDS TO BE SUCCESSFUL AND GRADUATE.
SO WE WISH YOU THE BEST AND WE KNOW YOU'RE GOING TO MEET-- YOU'RE GOING TO EXCEED THAT GOAL. ALL RIGHT.
IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN. THANK YOU.
SO NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS THE SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT, SO I'LL TURN IT OVER TO DR.
[7. SUPERINTENDENT REPORT-7:00 pm]
BALDERAS. I'LL BE QUICK BECAUSE I THINK WE HAVE A LITTLE LONGER PRESENTATION FOR OUR SCHOOLS UPDATE LATER ON, SO I REALLY WANT TO THANK OUR COUNSELORS, THIS IS COUNSELOR APPRECIATION WEEK FOR ALL THE WORK THAT THEY'RE DOING, AS YOU SAID, PRESIDENT KATIMS, IT'S A LOT OF WORK BEING DONE RIGHT NOW WITH OUR COUNSELORS AND IT IS COUNSELOR APPRECIATION WEEK, SO WITH GREAT APPRECIATION FOR ALL THE WORK THEY DO EACH AND EVERY DAY. ALSO, THIS IS CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION MONTH AND APPRECIATION FOR THAT.SO THIS IS SOMETHING THAT I WAS ABLE TO VISIT WITH DR.
KILGORE THIS MORNING AT MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL AND WE SAW SOME TINY HOMES AND A LOT OF CTE ACTION.
IT'S ACTUALLY A REALLY, REALLY ENLIGHTENING TO SEE THE WORK BEING DONE AT MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL WITH ALL THE CTE WORK AND THE TINY HOMES IN COLLABORATION WITH LYNNWOOD ROTARY TO WORK ON SUPPORTING OUR UNHOUSED POPULATION.
SO THAT'S SOMETHING THAT THEY WERE LOOKING TO EXPAND THAT OUT, ACTUALLY BUILD A COUPLE MORE LOOK LIKE WHEN WE TALK TO THEIR-- THE CTE TEACHER THERE, SO IT'S A GREAT TECHNICAL EDUCATION. WE KNOW IT MATTERS.
KIDS THAT ARE INVOLVED IN MULTIPLE PATHWAY COURSES GRADUATED AT A HIGHER RATE THAN THOSE KIDS THAT AREN'T, IT'S PART OF THE ENGAGEMENT AND KIDS--.
PRETTY SIMPLE THEORY AND ACTION, KIDS ARE GOING TO DO BETTER [INAUDIBLE] THEY WANT TO COME TO SCHOOL, RIGHT? SO WE GIVE THEM SOMETHING THAT THEY WANT TO COME TO SCHOOL FOR.
SO HOW DO WE CONTINUE TO BUILD THESE PATHWAY MODELS FOR OUR KIDS? I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE TALKED WITH SOME OF THE TEACHERS THERE TODAY AND LOOK FORWARD TO THAT WORK AHEAD.
THAT'S PART OF OUR STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS FOR ALIGNMENT OF PATHWAYS ACROSS THE SYSTEM. SO WE JUST WANT TO DO A SHOUT OUT TO MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL AND THERE CTE PROGRAMS AND THEIR--.
IT WAS A-- IT WAS PRETTY GREAT MORNING TO BE OUT THERE AND WATCHING KIDS DO THEIR THING IN SCHOOLS. ALSO WANT TO QUICKLY TOUCH BASE WITH, BEEN GETTING A COUPLE OF EMAILS REGARDING VOLUNTEERS IN SCHOOLS, AND I KNOW THAT THE MAJORITY OF SYSTEMS AROUND US DO NOT HAVE PARENTAL VOLUNTEERS BACK IN CLASSROOMS YET.
SHORELINE, MUKILTEO DO NOT HAVE CLASSROOM VOLUNTEERS YET.
EVERETT PUT A-- DID BRING HIM BACK IN DECEMBER, PUT A PAUSE IN JANUARY BECAUSE OF THE SPIKES. THEY JUST BROUGHT HIM BACK THIS WEEK.
SO WE'RE GOING TO BE LOOKING AT HOW DO WE BEST BRING IN PARENT VOLUNTEERS.
WE KNOW THAT PARENTS WANT TO COME IN, BUT ALSO HAVE TO BE MINDFUL IN TERMS OF WHERE WE CAN PLACE THEM BECAUSE WE'RE STILL VERY MUCH UNDER THE MANDATE TO TRY AND RESTRICT.
WE JUST HAVE TO BE CAUTIOUS OF HOW MANY KIDS, HOW MANY BODIES ARE IN A TYPICAL CLASSROOM.
SO WE'RE STILL UNDER THAT STATE MANDATE.
I KNOW THAT OTHER STATES AROUND US, DON'T WANT TO GET IN FRONT OF THE PRESENTATION LATER, BUT THERE ARE SOME CHANGES HAPPENING IN OTHER STATES.
DID HAVE A PRESENTATION TODAY WITH CHRIS REYKDAL AND OSPI REGARDING MANDATES AND POSSIBLE CHANGES. THAT'S NOT HERE YET, THOUGH.
THAT'S NOT HERE YET. OTHER STATES ARE DOING-- WORKING THAT WAY.
THERE MAY BE A POSSIBILITY OF THAT COMING DOWN THE PIPE, BUT NOT YET.
NOT YET. JUST RECEIVED LITERALLY A, RIGHT BEFORE THIS MEETING STARTED, AN EMAIL FROM SNOHOMISH COUNTY STATING EXACTLY THAT.
[00:40:01]
WE'RE NOT CHANGING ANYTHING.STAY THE COURSE UNTIL WE TELL YOU DIFFERENT.
SO THAT WAS AN EMAIL I RECEIVED RIGHT BEFORE THIS MEETING, SO WE ARE GOING TO STAY THE COURSE IN TERMS OF EVERYTHING THAT WE HAVE THROUGH MITIGATION FACTORS THAT INCLUDES MASKING AND OTHER PRECAUTIONS.
BUT BACK TO THE VOLUNTEERS WE ARE GOING TO BE, I KNOW THAT HUMAN RESOURCES IS WORKING ON PLANS TO--. HOW DO WE POSSIBLY BRING IN VOLUNTEERS BECAUSE THERE'S LOTS OF VOLUNTEERS ON CAMPUSES, THERE'S VOLUNTEERS THAT SOMETIMES DON'T SHOW UP ON CAMPUS, BUT YOU DO VOLUNTEER WORK AT HOME.
THE ONE THING THAT WE HAVE TO BE CAUTIOUS OF IS EVERYBODY HAS TO BE PROCESSED AND WE HAVE TO HAVE A VACCINATION RECORD FOR YOU.
THAT'S WHAT'S CAUSING THE ISSUES AROUND CAMPUSES AND THEY HAVE A VACCINATION RECORD FOR YOU. AND THEN THAT TAKES SOME TIME DOING BECAUSE THERE'S ALSO EXEMPTIONS THAT WE HAVE TO GO THROUGH. SO PHYSICALLY, SOMEONE HAS TO MEET WITH YOU AND GO OVER THE WHOLE RATIONALE TO WHY YOU NEED AN EXCEPTION, BECAUSE AGAIN, PEOPLE WHO NEED ACCESS FOR FOLKS TO BE ON CAMPUS. SO, IT'S MORE TO IT THAN IN THE PAST WHERE YOU COULD QUICKLY GET SCREENED AND GET INTO SCHOOLS HERE, IT'S A LITTLE BIT MORE TEDIOUS THIS YEAR, AND ALSO, WITH THE CASE COUNTS HAPPENING REALLY HIGH, WHY EVERETT PAUSED AS WELL, IS THERE'S BEEN A SHORTAGE OF STAFFING TO BE ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING AND ALSO TRYING TO MITIGATE HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE ON CAMPUS.
THERE'S ANOTHER FACTOR FOR EVERETT PAUSING IN JANUARY.
SO AGAIN, I WANT TO ASSURE PEOPLE THAT WE ARE LOOKING AT THIS AND WE ARE CREATING PLANS IN TERMS OF BEING REALLY INTENTIONAL IN TERMS OF WHERE WE COULD PLACE VOLUNTEERS, BUT IT'S GOING TO BE A WORK IN PROGRESS FOR US BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT IT DOES TAKE PEOPLE AND A SYSTEM TO BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY AND WORK THROUGH CENTRAL, [INAUDIBLE] IN TERMS OF HOW TO GET CLEAR TO GET INTO A CLASSROOM.
IT'S NOT AS EASY AS IT WAS THREE YEARS AGO, SO I KNOW THAT THERE'S BEEN SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT THAT. SO I WANT TO THANK THE BOARD FOR THE QUESTIONS TODAY WITH SCRIBER.
I THINK THE WORK DONE IN SCRIBER IS PRETTY PHENOMENAL IN TERMS OF THE DOUBLING OF THE GRADUATION RATE. SO I THINK IT'S JUST BEING REALLY INTENTIONAL USING DATA TO INFORM DECISION MAKING IN TERMS OF HOW DO YOU WORK WITH KIDS TO MAKE SURE THAT WE PUSH THEM, AND EVERY KID REALLY AT SCRIBER HAS A PERSONALIZED EDUCATION PLAN.
THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS WE TALKED ABOUT FOR STRATEGIC PLANNING.
IT'S--. THAT'S THE INTENTIONALITY THAT WE HOPE TO HAVE, AND I KNOW THAT IT DOES HAPPEN ACROSS THE OTHER FOUR COMPREHENSIVES, BUT TO BE SYSTEMATIC ABOUT HOW WE DO IT.
SO IT'S REALLY INTENTIONAL ACROSS ALL FIVE HIGH SCHOOLS.
AND SO JUST LOOKING TOWARD THAT, INCLUDING OUR ONLINE, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE A EDMONDS HEIGHTS K-12 AS WELL, SO JUST MAKING SURE THAT WE'RE REALLY INTENTIONAL HOW WE DO THAT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE MEETING KIDS WHERE THEY ARE AND MEETING AND KNOWING WHERE EVERY KID IS BY NAME, STRENGTH AND NEED.
SO I WANT TO THANK THE BOARD WHO LOOKS QUESTIONS TODAY.
BALDERAS. THAT WAS VERY INFORMATIVE.
[8. APPROVAL OF MINUTES-7:05 pm]
NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES OF THE REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING THAT WE HAD ON JANUARY 25TH, 2022.DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE THOSE MINUTES? SO MOVED. SECOND.
IT'S BEEN MOVED AND SECONDED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES FOR THE JANUARY 25TH, 2022 REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING.
EVERYBODY IN FAVOR PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE.
ANY ABSTENTIONS? AND THE MINUTES FOR JANUARY 25TH, 2022 REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING PASS.
[9. CONSENT AGENDA-7:07 pm]
NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS THE CONSENT AGENDA, AND THE CONSENT AGENDA IS ALL OF THOSE THINGS THAT ARE CONSIDERED REGULAR ROUTINE ITEMS THAT WE CAN USUALLY DEAL WITH AS A GROUP.JUST A QUICK SUMMARY OF WHAT'S ON OUR CONSENT AGENDA TONIGHT, WE HAVE 10 FIELD TRIPS THAT START MARCH 3RD AND THEN GO THROUGH THE SPRING, WE HAVE THREE THAT DEAL WITH PERSONNEL ISSUES, AND WE HAVE ONE THAT DEALS WITH THE PURCHASE OF SOUND ENHANCEMENT SYSTEMS FOR ALL OF OUR CLASSROOMS. DO I HEAR A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA FOR TONIGHT? I SO MOVE. SECOND.
THANK YOU. IT'S BEEN MOVED AND SECONDED TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA FOR TONIGHT.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? I'D LIKE TO JUST SAY THAT ABOUT THE SOUND ENHANCEMENT SYSTEM, I KNOW THAT IT MIGHT LOOK EXPENSIVE, IT IS COVERED BY OUR TECH LEVY, AND AS SOMEONE WHO WAS ACTUALLY PART OF THE
[00:45:04]
EVALUATION OF IT EARLY ON WHEN WE WERE FIRST PILOTING IT IN THE DISTRICT, WHEN WE DID STUDENT SURVEYS AND TEACHER SURVEYS, PRE AND POST, BEFORE THEY'RE USING IT AND AFTER, IT HAD REALLY POSITIVE RESULTS THAT STUDENTS COULD HEAR BETTER, FELT MORE INVOLVED IN THE CLASSROOM WITH IT, AND THAT TEACHERS FOUND IT MUCH EASIER TO MAKE IT THROUGH THE DAY WITHOUT HAVING TO RAISE THEIR VOICES AND TO KNOW THAT THEIR KIDS WERE BEING HEARD.SO I JUST WANT TO SAY IT'S GOOD TO SEE THAT OUR 2020 TECH LEVY IS ABLE TO COVER THAT BECAUSE IT REALLY, I THINK, HELPS SUPPORT STUDENT LEARNING VERY WELL.
SO. NO FURTHER DISCUSSION? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF APPROVING THE CONSENT AGENDA SAY AYE.
AYE. ALL THOSE AGAINST SAY NAY.
ANY ABSTENTIONS? AND THE CONSENT AGENDA PASSES.
NEXT, WE HAVE PUBLIC COMMENTS, AND I BELIEVE WE HAVE ONE PERSON WHO IS ONLINE TO SPEAK
[10. PUBLIC COMMENTS-7:10 pm]
TONIGHT, JENNIFER [INAUDIBLE], IF I'VE SAID IT PROPERLY.AND JENNIFER, YOU GET THREE MINUTES.
THE BOARD WILL NOT NECESSARILY RESPOND AT THIS TIME, BUT AT SOME POINT THE STAFF AND OR YOU WOULD RECEIVE A RESPONSE.
ARE YOU READY TO GO? SURE. CAN YOU HEAR ME OK? YES, WE CAN HEAR YOU.
MY NAME IS JENNIFER [INAUDIBLE] AND I AM THE PARENT AND AUNT OF STUDENTS IN THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND IT WAS NICE TO HEAR THE UPDATE ON SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS.
SO MY INQUIRY AND REQUEST IS IF WE CAN GET VOLUNTEERS BACK INTO OUR SCHOOLS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. MY UNDERSTANDING FROM PARENTS AND TEACHERS ACROSS THE DISTRICT IS THAT ONLY THOSE WHO PROVIDE PRESENTATIONS ARE CURRENTLY ALLOWED.
I FEEL THAT CHILDREN JUST VERY MUCH DESERVE THE BENEFITS OF CLASSROOM VOLUNTEERS FOR WHICH THEY HAVE BEEN DEPRIVED FOR TWO YEARS ACROSS THREE ACADEMIC YEARS.
TEACHERS ARE BURNING OUT, OUR KIDS ARE BURNING OUT AND ACTING OUT, AND WE REALLY NEED MORE ADULT PRESENCE IN OUR SCHOOL PLAYGROUNDS AND IN LUNCHROOMS. MANY STUDENTS ARE LAGGING BEHIND, AND YET WE CAN'T TAKE ADVANTAGE OF COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS TO SUPPORT SMALL GROUPS AND LISTENING TO KIDS READ OUT LOUD.
AS A PUBLIC HEALTH PROFESSIONAL, I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN VERY CAUTIOUS ABOUT COVID AND REMOVED MY CHILD FROM SCHOOL WELL BEFORE THE SCHOOL ACTUALLY SHUT DOWN.
BUT AT THIS POINT, TWO YEARS LATER, I BELIEVE THAT THE BENEFITS OUTWEIGH THE RISKS, AND I'M FULLY CONFIDENT THAT OUR SCHOOL PERSONNEL CAN IMPLEMENT THIS IN A SAFE MANNER, AND I THINK MORE THAN ANY TIME IN THE DISTRICT'S HISTORY, WE REALLY NEED TO OPTIMIZE OUR RESOURCES, INCLUDING COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS AND OTHER PARTNERSHIPS, LIKE SCHOOL BASED HEALTH, TO GET OUR KIDS ON TRACK.
WE WANT TO BE GOOD STEWARDS OF ALL RESOURCES AND NOT LET OPPORTUNITIES GO TO WASTE.
WE KNOW THAT ONE MEANINGFUL INTERACTION WITH A CHILD CAN CHANGE THEIR WORLD.
PERHAPS THAT ONE TRUSTED ADULT THAT A CHILD FEELS COMFORTABLE WITH IS THAT VOLUNTEER OR COMMUNITY WORKER THAT IS NOT BEING LET IN THE DOOR.
SO I WOULD JUST LIKE TO ASK AND REQUEST IF WE CAN EXPEDITE TO UPDATE THE POLICY AND START PROCESSING THAT VOLUNTEER PAPERWORK AND GET MORE ADULTS ON OUR CAMPUSES.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME AND FOR ALL THE WORK THAT YOU DO.
THANK YOU, JENNY, WE APPRECIATE YOUR COMING AND SPEAKING.
WE HAD ONE OTHER COMMENT FROM ANNIE [INAUDIBLE] WHO ASKED FOR HER WRITTEN COMMENT TO JUST BE PUT INTO THE RECORD, AND IT WAS ALSO ON THE TOPIC OF VOLUNTEERS AND ASKING FOR THE PROCESS TO BE EXPEDITED AS WELL TO GET MORE PARENT VOLUNTEERS IN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
[11. REPORTS-7:40 pm]
NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS THE DISTRICT STATUS UPDATE, SO I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO DR.THANK YOU, PRESIDENT KATIMS. IF I CAN GET THE POWERPOINT UP AND THEN TURN OVER TO STAFF BECAUSE I THINK [INAUDIBLE] CAN PROVIDE A LITTLE BRIEF IN TERMS OF WHAT I'M HEARING.
NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE. TURN IT OVER TO DANA GEASLEN, OUR ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT.
GOOD EVENING, BOARD OF DIRECTORS.
WE HAVE A QUICK UPDATE SNOHOMISH COUNTY HEALTH AND THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT COVID 19.
[00:50:05]
CASE COUNTS ARE STARTING TO DECREASE, WHICH IS FANTASTIC NEWS.AS YOU REMEMBER, THEY WERE CLOSE TO 4000 A FEW WEEKS AGO.
WE ARE DOWN TO 1662 PER HUNDRED THOUSAND.
THE POSITIVITY RATE IS ALSO DOWN 25 PERCENT, AND IF YOU REMEMBER A FEW WEEKS AGO, IT WAS IN THE MID THIRTIES. THE OMICRON VARIANT CONTINUES TO BE THE DOMINANT VARIANT, IT IS NOW 99.7 PERCENT OF CASES.
THE NEW OMICRON VARIANT IS ALSO BEING CALLED THAT, AND SO THAT WRAPS INTO THAT TOTAL ALSO, AND WHAT THEY'RE FINDING IS IT'S JUST NOT, IT'S NOT AS [INAUDIBLE] MAJOR IMPLICATIONS. IT'S SIMILAR TO THE INITIAL OMICRON VARIANT.
AND SOME EXCITING NEWS IS THAT 67 PERCENT OF FIVE YEARS AND OLDER PEOPLE IN SNOHOMISH COUNTY ARE FULLY VACCINATED.
SO THAT'S GREAT AND WE HOPE THAT NUMBER CONTINUES TO RISE.
NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE. SPECIFICALLY, IN THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT WE HAD, IN THE LAST 14 DAYS, 454 CASES, THAT NUMBER IS DOWN IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS.
WE HAVE PROVIDED ON THE PCR TESTS.
WE HAD 508 TESTS CONDUCTED WITH ABOUT 21 PERCENT POSITIVITY RATE, AND AGAIN, THE PCR TESTS ARE THE LAB READ TESTS.
WE SEND THOSE AWAY AND THEY COME BACK IN ABOUT 24 HOURS, IS ABOUT THE TURNAROUND TIME RIGHT NOW. OUR RAPID TESTS, WHICH WE WERE ABLE TO ACCESS REALLY IN THE MONTH OF JANUARY, WE HAVE 81 POSITIVE CASES.
THOSE ARE THE-- WE ONLY REPORT THE POSITIVE CASES, SO WE'VE HAD 81 POSITIVE CASES COME BACK AND THEN WE JUST ACQUIRED 20000 MORE RAPID TESTS IN THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT.
WE HAVE BOTH PCR AND RAPID TESTS AT ALL OF OUR SCHOOL SITES, SO THAT IS A GREAT MITIGATING STRATEGY FOR OUR STAFF AND FOR OUR STUDENTS.
FOR OUR COVID 19 DASHBOARD UPDATE, I'LL TURN IT OVER FIRST TO HARMONY WEINBERG.
MY NAME IS HARMONY WEINBERG, AND I AM THE COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER FOR THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT AND CHRIS BAILEY, OUR DIRECTOR OF TECHNOLOGY, HAS BEEN WORKING REALLY HARD WITH HIS TEAM AS WELL AS THE COMMUNICATIONS TEAM TO MAKE SOME UPDATES TO OUR COVID 19 DASHBOARD. SO I'M GOING TO TOSS IT OVER TO YOU NOW, CHRIS, THANKS.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. GOOD EVENING, BOARD.
I WAS ASKED TO PROVIDE A LITTLE BIT OF BACKGROUND INFORMATION REGARDING THE DISTRICT'S COVID DASHBOARD, AS WELL AS TO PRESENT SOME MODIFICATIONS OR UPDATES THAT WE HAVE PENDING THAT WE'D LIKE TO MOVE FORWARD WITH HERE VERY SOON TO YOU ALL.
SO JUST BRIEFLY, THIS IS OUR CURRENT COVID DASHBOARD.
YOU'LL NOTICE THERE ARE SEVERAL AREAS WHERE WE'VE MODIFIED THE DATA TO SHOW UPDATES PENDING. THAT WAS BECAUSE WE WANTED TO BE ABLE TO SHARE WITH YOU ALL WHAT THE CHANGES WE WANTED TO MAKE WERE AND THE DATA THAT WAS BEING PRESENTED, THIS WAS LATE LAST WEEK, WASN'T ACCURATELY REFLECTING THE COVID PICTURE IN THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT, SO THAT CHANGE WAS MADE THEN.
I WANT TO BACK UP A LITTLE BIT, THOUGH.
THE NEXT SLIDE WILL SHOW YOU THE DASHBOARD THAT THE DISTRICT USED UNTIL JANUARY OF THIS YEAR. NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE.
YOU'LL NOTICE ON THIS SLIDE, WE PRESENTED THE COVID CASE INFORMATION PER BUILDING, IT WAS BROKEN DOWN BY STAFF AND STUDENTS, WE ALSO TRACKED CLOSE CONTACTS THERE.
AS WE WERE EVALUATING ADDITIONAL CHANGES TO OUR DASHBOARD BOTH IN JANUARY AND THEN MORE RECENTLY IN THE LAST WEEK OR SO, WE WERE TRYING TO EVALUATE HOW OUR DASHBOARD COMPARES TO THOSE DISTRICTS AROUND US AND WHAT INFORMATION WE REALLY NEEDED TO ENSURE WE WERE COMMUNICATING ACCURATELY.
NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE. SO IN LOOKING, SOME OF THE COMMON THEMES WE SAW, MOST OF THE DISTRICTS AROUND US WERE ONLY REPORTING CONFIRMED POSITIVE CASES WITHIN A GIVEN WEEK BY SCHOOL OR LOCATION.
OUR DASHBOARDS HAVE BEEN SHOWING INFORMATION IN REAL TIME, ESSENTIALLY AS SOON AS THE CASE HAS BEEN CONFIRMED WE'VE BEEN PRESENTING THAT INFORMATION TO THE COMMUNITY.
IN ADDITION, SOME DISTRICTS WILL BREAK THAT INFORMATION OUT BETWEEN STAFF AND STUDENTS, BUT THAT WASN'T CONSISTENT ACROSS THE BOARD.
WE WEREN'T SEEING ANY OTHER DISTRICTS REPORTING CASES WHILE THEY'RE STILL BEING INVESTIGATED BEFORE THEY'VE BEEN CONFIRMED, AND THE CONTACT TRACING PORTION, THAT [INAUDIBLE] WILL BE SHARING WITH YOU A LITTLE BIT LATER, HAD BEEN COMPLETED YET, AND LASTLY, WE WEREN'T SEEING INFORMATION ON OTHER DASHBOARDS THAT TALKED ABOUT STUDENTS OR STAFF IN QUARANTINE, AS WELL AS CLOSE CONTACTS.
SO, THOSE ARE SOME DISTINCTIONS.
I ALSO INCLUDED A COUPLE SCREENSHOTS FROM SOME OTHER DASHBOARDS JUST TO GIVE YOU A PICTURE OF WHAT THOSE OTHER DISTRICTS LOOK LIKE.
SO, CHARELL IF YOU WOULDN'T MIND MOVING FORWARD.
SO, HERE ARE A COUPLE OF THESE ARE BOTH EVERETT, AND MUKILTEO SCHOOL DISTRICTS DASHBOARDS. AS I SAID, STAFF AND STUDENT CASES ON THE LEFT BROKEN DOWN BY LOCATION AND BY WEEK AND ON THE RIGHT IT'S JUST AN AGGREGATE CASE FOR A GIVEN WEEK BY LOCATION.
AND THEN THE NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE.
SHORELINE AND MONROE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
SIMILARLY, THEY'VE GOT ON THE LEFT STAFF AND STUDENT CONFIRMED CASES, AND THAT'S FOR A GIVEN WEEK, AND ON THE RIGHT, IT'S JUST AN AGGREGATE OF THE TOTAL CASES PER [INAUDIBLE].
SO A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT INFORMATION.
IT REINFORCE OUR PERCEPTION THAT WE'RE PRESENTING A LOT MORE INFORMATION THAN OUR PEERS ARE, AND THAT ACTUALLY LEADS TO THE NEXT SLIDE, WHICH IS TALKING ABOUT SOME OF THE AREAS OF CONCERN [INAUDIBLE] DASHBOARD.
[00:55:02]
SO I HIGHLIGHTED A COUPLE OF SECTIONS THAT I WANTED TO TALK THROUGH.THE FIRST IS THE TWO ON THE LEFT, THE 11 AND 17, THESE WERE COVID CASES THAT WERE CONFIRMED FOR STAFF AND FOR STUDENTS, AND THIS WAS BASED ON A THE.
MUTE THAT WE ARE HEARING BACKGROUND INFORMATION.
APOLOGIZES. NO PROBLEM. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
SO THE INFORMATION THAT'S PRESENTED ON THE LEFT WITH THE CONFIRMED CASES, WE RECOGNIZE THAT IT WAS NOT ACTUALLY SHOWING THE NUMBER OF CASES THAT WE KNEW ABOUT, AND MARA WILL SPEAK TO THIS IN GREATER DETAIL THAN I CAN, BUT ESSENTIALLY, THE PROCESS OF COMPLETING THE CASE CLOSURE RESULTED IN US KNOWING ABOUT A CASE.
BUT IT NOT BEING FORMALLY CONFIRMED THROUGH OUR PROCESS YET, AND THAT RESULTED IN IT NOT BEING PRESENTED TO THE COMMUNITY ON OUR DASHBOARD AS A CONFIRMED POSITIVE CASE.
IN ADDITION, THE STAFF INFORMATION ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE, THE ONE CONFIRMED STAFF CASE AND THE ONE STAFF IN QUARANTINE, SIMILARLY, WE KNEW ABOUT ADDITIONAL CASES, BUT THEY HAD NOT FULLY BEEN VETTED BY THE PROCESS YET, AND SO THEY WEREN'T BEING BROADCAST THROUGH THE DASHBOARD. THE 14 DAY SUMMARY ON THE BOTTOM OF THIS DASHBOARD ALSO DOESN'T SHOW A VERY COMPLETE PICTURE BECAUSE THE WORK THAT'S BEING DONE TO CLOSE OUT CASES AND TO SHOW THEM AS CONFIRMED POSITIVE CASES, OFTEN INDICATED CASES THAT WERE PRIOR TO THE 14 DAY PERIOD, AND SO WE RECOGNIZE THAT THIS CHART REALLY DIDN'T SHOW A FULL PICTURE.
SO THAT'S KIND OF THE MAJOR INFORMATION THAT WE TOOK THAT WE KIND OF FUELED THE CHANGE THAT [INAUDIBLE] PRESENT TO YOU. WE ALSO RECEIVED A FAIR AMOUNT OF FEEDBACK FROM THE COMMUNITY, AND WE'VE BEEN DOING OUR BEST TO RESPOND TO THAT FEEDBACK, BOTH WITH LITTLE MODIFICATIONS AS WELL AS IN COMMUNICATING SOME OF THE DETAILS BEHIND THE DATA THAT WE'RE PRESENTING. THERE'S A LOT TO IT, AND IT'S UNFORTUNATELY A LITTLE BIT MORE COMPLICATED THAN ANY OF US WOULD LIKE. SO ON THIS NEXT SLIDE, OUR HOPE IS THAT WHAT I'VE REPRESENTED HERE IS A SIMPLER VERSION THAT MORE ACCURATELY PORTRAYS THE INFORMATION THAT WE KNOW WITH GREATER CONFIDENCE THAN WHAT OUR DASHBOARD CURRENTLY SHOWS.
ON THE NEXT OH, GOOD. ONE THING THAT WE'VE ADDED TO THE DASHBOARD IS THE NUMBER OF CASES THAT HAVE BEEN REPORTED WITHIN A GIVEN DAY.
SO THAT TOP LEFT CORNER THIS MORNING, WHEN I WAS GETTING THE SLIDES UPDATED, THERE WERE NO CASES REPORTED AT THAT TIME, SO THAT WAS A ZERO.
BY THE END OF THE DAY, THAT NUMBER WILL HAVE GROWN.
THE 264 BELOW THAT IS THE NUMBER OF AGGREGATE COVID CASES THAT HAVE BEEN REPORTED THAT ARE STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION AND HAVEN'T YET BEEN CONFIRMED BY OUR TEAM.
ON THE NEXT SLIDE, YOU'LL SEE NEW INFORMATION THAT WE PRESENTED RECENTLY.
THIS IS ESSENTIALLY DAILY ATTENDANCE INFORMATION SHOWING THE ABSENTEEISM BOTH BY STUDENTS AND STAFF. THIS IS NEW INFORMATION WE'VE ASKED OUR SCHOOLS TO REPORT TO THE EXTENDED CABINET TEAM, WHICH REVIEWS ON A DAILY BASIS, TYPICALLY SEVERAL TIMES A DAY, TO ENSURE THAT WE ARE IDENTIFYING ANY POTENTIAL HOTSPOTS OR AREAS OF CONCERN WITH BOTH STAFF AND STUDENT ABSENTEEISM.
JUST ABOVE THAT, YOU'LL SEE ON THE NEXT SLIDE, WE ARE TRACKING AND PRESENTING THE NUMBER OF CLASSROOMS THAT ARE BEING CLOSED ACROSS THE DISTRICT, AS WELL AS THE NUMBER OF SCHOOLS THAT MAY BE CLOSED. DOWN BELOW, YOU'LL NOTICE A NUMBER OF CHANGES.
FIRST OF ALL, WE EXTENDED IT FROM A 14 DAY TO A 28 DAY.
THIS WILL PRESENT A MUCH FULLER PICTURE.
YOU'LL NOTICE CASES UNDER INVESTIGATION GOING DOWN AND CONFIRMED CASES GOING UP BECAUSE WE'VE GOT A LARGER WINDOW OF TIME THAT ALLOWS US TO SEE MORE DATA MOVING.
YOU'LL NOTICE THE BLUE BAR ON THAT CHART IS ACTUALLY A NEW ONE.
IT WILL SHOW THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CASES THAT ARE REPORTED ON A GIVEN DATE, AND THAT INFORMATION WILL NEVER CHANGE, SO WE'LL ALWAYS BE ABLE TO GO BACK IN TIME AND SEE THAT JANUARY 18TH, FOR EXAMPLE, WAS LIKELY THE HIGHEST DAY THAT WE'VE SEEN OF INDIVIDUAL REPORTED CASES.
THAT DOESN'T NECESSARILY MEAN THAT THOSE CASES WILL ULTIMATELY BE REFLECTED ON THE DASHBOARD ON THAT DATE, BUT THAT IS DATE THOSE WERE REPORTED TO THE DISTRICT AND THAT THE ADMINISTRATOR SUBMITTED THE COVID CASE REPORT TO US.
WE ALSO HAVE CASES UNDER INVESTIGATION ON THE DASHBOARD BELOW, THIS IS THE GREEN BAR, AND YOU'LL NOTICE THE DATES ON THE FAR RIGHT HAVE A BLUE AND GREEN BAR THAT ARE VERY SIMILAR TO ONE ANOTHER, ALMOST EXACTLY IN A NUMBER OF THOSE DATES.
WHAT THAT MEANS IS THAT THOSE CASES HAVE BEEN REPORTED AND THAT NO INVESTIGATION WORK HAS BEEN COMPLETED FOR THOSE SPECIFIC CASES YET.
AS THE INVESTIGATION OCCURS, THAT GREEN BAR WILL CONTINUE TO GO DOWN UNTIL IT LOOKS MORE LIKE THE LEFT SIDE OF THE CHART, WHICH DOESN'T HAVE MUCH GREEN LEFT BECAUSE ALL OF THOSE CASES HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY INVESTIGATED.
FURTHER TO THE LEFT, WE ALSO WANTED TO ENSURE THAT THE INVESTIGATION WORK IS REFLECTED AND THAT THE CASES THAT ARE CONFIRMED ARE BEING PRESENTED TO THE COMMUNITY AND SO BY EXTENDING OUR TIMELINE TO 28 DAYS, YOU SEE A LOT MORE CONFIRMED STUDENT AND STAFF CASES THAN WE WERE PRESENTING PREVIOUSLY.
SO THE INVESTIGATION WORK THAT THE COVID RESPONSE TEAM COMPLETES, WHICH MARA WILL DESCRIBE HERE IN A FEW MINUTES, THAT IS WHAT'S RESULTING IN OR DRIVING THE ORANGE AND THE
[01:00:01]
RED NUMBERS BEING POPULATED ON THE DASHBOARD.ONE OF THE PIECES OF FEEDBACK THAT WE RECEIVED FROM THE COMMUNITY WAS THAT THE DIFFERENT COLORS ON THAT CHART WEREN'T VERY CLEAR, AND WE WANTED TO ENSURE THAT WE WERE ABLE TO CLEARLY DESCRIBE WHAT THOSE MEANT.
SO IN ORDER TO DO THAT, WE'RE GOING TO ADD A NEW DASHBOARD PAGE THAT WILL BLOW THAT UP A LITTLE BIT AND ALSO PROVIDE US A BIT MORE REAL ESTATE TO PROVIDE GREATER DETAIL INTO WHAT EACH OF THOSE COMPONENTS MEANS.
SO ANOTHER CHANGE THAT WE'LL BE MAKING IS TO SPLIT OUT THE ELEMENTARY FROM THE SECONDARY AND NON INSTRUCTIONAL SCHOOLS IN THE CASES BY LOCATION.
YOU'LL NOTICE THAT THIS TABLE HAS A NUMBER OF CLASSROOMS IN REMOTE LEARNING, THAT IS NOT GOING TO BE PRESENTED ON THE SECONDARY TABLE BECAUSE WE'RE NOT CLOSING INDIVIDUAL CLASSROOMS AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL.
OTHERWISE, THIS ALSO REPORTS THE CASES REPORTED TODAY FOR EACH GIVEN LOCATION, AS WELL AS THE CASES THAT ARE UNDER INVESTIGATION OVER THE LAST 28 DAY PERIOD FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL CAMPUS. AND THEN, AS I SAID, WE ALSO HAVE A SECOND PAGE THAT'S GOT THE SECONDARY AND NON-INSTRUCTIONAL FACILITIES.
WE FELT THAT THIS MAY BE MORE LOGICAL WAY OF BREAKING OUT THE DIFFERENT CAMPUSES WOULD BE A BIT MORE CLEAR TO THE COMMUNITY.
THE LAST SLIDE IS THE GEO MAP.
SOME PEOPLE REALLY ENJOY SEEING THIS, AND FOR OTHER PEOPLE, THIS DOESN'T REALLY PROVIDE ANY VALUE WHATSOEVER, SO I JUST WANT TO SPEAK TO IT BRIEFLY.
IT'S HERE. IT DOES SHOW AN AGGREGATE OF BOTH THE CONFIRMED CASES AS WELL AS THOSE UNDER INVESTIGATION. TYPICALLY, WHAT YOU'LL NOTICE IS THAT THE LARGER SCHOOLS HAVE A LARGER BUBBLE, MAKE SENSE THAT THEY WOULD HAVE MORE COVID CASES, HOWEVER, LOOKING AT IT IN THIS FORMAT, WHEN YOU CAN HOVER OVER DIFFERENT CAMPUSES, YOU CAN VERY CLEARLY SEE WHEN AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, FOR EXAMPLE, HAS A HOTSPOT OF CASES AS COMPOSED OR AS OPPOSED TO OTHER ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. SO BEING ABLE TO COMPARE CAMPUSES IN THAT WAY HAS BEEN PRETTY INTERESTING. SO IN SUMMARY, WE'VE BEEN TRYING TO RESPOND TO THE FEEDBACK FROM VARIOUS STAKEHOLDERS, STAFF, STUDENTS, BOARD AND COMMUNITY AND APPRECIATE THAT FEEDBACK, AND I KNOW IT WILL KEEP COMING IN AND WE'RE GOING TO DO OUR BEST TO CONTINUE TO RESPOND TO IT.
WE'RE ALSO WORKING TO ALIGN WHAT WE'RE PRESENTING TO THE COMMUNITY WITH WHAT OUR PEER DISTRICTS ARE DOING, AND WE HOPE THAT THE CHANGES THAT WE MAKE WILL RESULT IN A MORE TIMELY AND RELEVANT DASHBOARD FOR EVERYBODY.
HARMONY, I THINK IT'S YOU. YEAH.
THANK YOU. SO THE OTHER PART ABOUT WE WANT TO UPDATE IS IN REFLECTION TO THE DASHBOARD IS COVID COMMUNICATION.
SO WE WANT TO POINT OUT THAT WE HAVE BEEN DOING A LOT OF COMMUNICATION AROUND COVID POSITIVE CASES AND WE WANT TO STREAMLINE THAT AND HOW WE'RE GETTING INFORMATION OUT.
SO FAMILIES WILL BE NOTIFIED IF THESE UNDER THESE FOUR SCENARIOS, SO THEIR STUDENT IS IDENTIFIED AS A CLOSE CONTACT, THEIR STUDENT'S CLASSROOM IS SHIFTING TO REMOTE, ANY CLASSROOM IN THEIR SCHOOL SHIFTING TO REMOTE, OR IF THEY'RE STUDENT'S ENTIRE SCHOOL IS SHIFTING TO REMOTE. AND WHEN WE SAY THEY WILL BE NOTIFIED, THAT MEANS THEY WILL BE CALLED, THEY WILL BE TEXT, THEY WILL GET AN EMAIL, ALL THOSE DIFFERENT TYPES OF COMMUNICATION WILL GO OUT.
AS FAR AS THE OTHER INFORMATION AND QUESTIONS WE'VE BEEN GETTING ABOUT A POSITIVE CASE IN THE DISTRICT OR IN THE SCHOOL, THAT INFORMATION CAN NOW BEST BE SEEN ON THE DASHBOARD BECAUSE IT WILL BE UPDATED AS SOON AS IT IS REPORTED, WHICH LEADS ME TO THE NEXT SLIDE.
AND WE DO WANT TO GO OVER THE COVID RESPONSE FLOW CHART.
HOW ARE THESE DECISIONS--? HOW IS THE INFORMATION GETTING TO THE DASHBOARD? SO I'M GOING TO KIND OF WALK YOU THROUGH BIG PICTURE AND THEN I'LL HAND IT TO MARA TO REALLY TALK ABOUT THE COVID RESPONSE TEAM WORK THAT'S HAPPENING.
SO A FAMILY OR STAFF REPORTS A CASE, THE SCHOOL BUILDING COVID RESPONSE TEAM SUBMITS A DIGITAL FORM, SAYING THAT THERE HAS BEEN A CASE REPORTED, AND THAT GREEN ARROW SHOWS YOU THAT'S THE DASHBOARD IS UPDATED.
SO WE REALLY WANT OUR COMMUNITY TO UNDERSTAND THAT AS SOON AS THAT DIGITAL FORM, IT'LL NOW BE UPDATED ON THE DASHBOARD FOR REPORTED TODAY.
SO YOU'RE REALLY GOING TO GET THAT PULSE OF WHAT'S HAPPENING IN OUR COMMUNITY ON A GIVEN DAY, TODAY. AND THEN IT'S IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT THERE'S-- NEXT TWO THINGS HAPPEN AT THE SAME TIME. THE COVID RESPONSE TEAM MARA AND HER TEAM ARE CONDUCTING THE INVESTIGATION.
THAT'S WHEN ALL THE WORK HAPPENS THAT SHE'LL TELL YOU ABOUT IN JUST A MINUTE.
AND THEN THE-- MEANWHILE, EXTENDED CABINET IS REVIEWING HIGH CASE TRENDS AND ATTENDANCE INFORMATION THAT'S REPORTED DAILY AND THEN HAVING CONVERSATIONS, AND BASED ON THAT DATA, THEY WILL MAKE A DECISION AND DR.
BALDERAS WILL MAKE THE DECISION IF THE CLASSROOM OR A SCHOOL NEEDS TO SHIFT TO REMOTE LEARNING. ONCE THAT DECISION'S BEEN MADE AND ALL THOSE DIRECTLY IMPACTED HAVE BEEN COMMUNICATED, FAMILIES HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED, THEN THE DASHBOARD IS UPDATED.
SO BY THE END OF THE DAY THAT THAT PROCESS, THE DASHBOARD IS UPDATED AT THE END OF THE DAY OR EARLY MORNING, AND THEN ALL THE WORK THAT HAPPENS AT THAT SAME TIME THE COVID RESPONSE TEAM IS CONDUCTING, AND WHEN THAT WORK IS COMPLETE, THE DASHBOARD IS UPDATED.
AND SO I WILL HAND IT OVER TO MARA NOW TO TAKE ON AND WALK THE BOARD AND THE COMMUNITY THROUGH THAT PROCESS.
[01:05:02]
THANK YOU, HARMONY, AND GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE.GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE, THANK YOU SO MUCH.
SO A LOT OF PEOPLE ASK ME, WHAT DOES CONTACT TRACING MEAN? WHAT DOES THAT ENTAIL? SO, AS HARMONY INDICATED, WHEN A CASE IS REPORTED, WE DO GET A DIGITAL FORM INDICATING THAT A CASE HAS BEEN REPORTED, AND WHEN WE LOOK AT CONTACT TRACING, WE LOOK AT, FIRST OF ALL, IDENTIFYING IF THAT REPORTED POSITIVE CASE WAS A RISK TO OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF ON OUR CAMPUS OR IN ANY OF OUR SPONSORED ACTIVITIES.
WE HAVE FOUND THAT SOMETIMES CASES, EVEN THOUGH THEY'RE REPORTED TO US, MAY NOT HAVE BEEN A RISK TO OUR CAMPUS BECAUSE THAT STUDENT OR STAFF MEMBER WASN'T ON CAMPUS DURING THAT CONTAGIOUS PERIOD OF TIME THAT THEY WERE POSITIVE WITH COVID.
SO THAT DIGITAL FORM PROVIDES US WITH INFORMATION, THE INITIALS OF THE STAFF AND STUDENT THAT HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS BEING A POSITIVE CASE, THE DATE OF THE POSITIVE TEST RESULTS, THE LOCATION AND THE DATE OF WHEN THAT INDIVIDUAL WAS LAST ON CAMPUS AND THE DATE THAT THEIR SYMPTOM ONSET STARTED.
AND ALL THIS INFORMATION REALLY HELPS ACCUMULATE THE DATA WE NEED TO DETERMINE WHETHER THERE WAS A RISK TO OUR CAMPUS.
ONCE WE'VE DETERMINED A RISK HAS OCCURRED, WE THEN HAVE TO MAKE SURE WE LET PEOPLE KNOW THAT THEY HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO AN INDIVIDUAL THAT HAS TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID 19.
WE HELP PEOPLE UNDERSTAND HOW THEY CAN GET TESTED FOR COVID 19 IF THEY'VE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A CLOSE CONTACT, AND WE HELP GUIDE THEM THROUGH WHAT IS EXPECTED OF THEM IN THEIR QUARANTINE PERIOD.
A LOT OF THIS WORK IS DONE PRIMARILY AT THE BUILDING LEVEL WITH THE ASSISTANT OF OUR CENTRAL-- ASSISTANCE OF OUR CENTRALIZED COVID TRACING RESPONSE TEAM AND THAT FORM ONE, THAT DIGITAL FORM, IS WHAT IS INDICATED AS CASES THAT ARE CURRENTLY UNDER INVESTIGATION.
SO IF WE CAN GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE.
SO ONCE WE GET THAT FORM ONE, OUR CONTACT TRACING TEAM HAS TO REALLY LOOK AT DOING A LOT OF COMPONENTS THAT IS NECESSARY FOR US TO BE ABLE THEN TO REPORT THAT BACK TO SNOHOMISH HEALTH DISTRICT. THE FIRST ONE IS REALLY LOOKING AT THAT ASSESSMENT INVESTIGATION AND VERIFYING THAT THE DATA THAT'S BEEN COLLECTED AT THE BUILDING LEVEL IS COMPLETE.
WE NEED TO LOOK AT ALSO MANAGING ANY NEW OR ONGOING DATA FROM A REPORTED CASE.
A LOT OF TIMES CASES ARE NOT JUST STAGNANT, THEY CONTINUE AS WE LEARN MORE AND MORE ABOUT THAT INDIVIDUAL'S ACTIVITY DURING THEIR CONTAGIOUS PERIOD.
SO WE HAVE TO MANAGE ANY NEW OR ONGOING DATA.
WE HELP COORDINATE WITH THE BUILDING TEAM TO ENSURE ACCURACY OF THAT DATA AND THEN HELP TO IDENTIFY WHO NEEDS TO BE NOTIFIED AND SUPPORT NOTIFICATION.
I THINK THE CHALLENGE THAT WE HAD DURING THE SURGE WAS WE HAD A LARGE INCREASE IN CASES IN A VERY SHORT TIME PERIOD, AS WELL AS THE CHALLENGE OF A NEW GUIDELINE THAT WAS REDUCED TO FIVE DAYS TO RETURN BACK TO CAMPUS.
OUR SYSTEM WAS BUILT TO DEAL WITH 30 CASES A DAY AND AT THE PEAK ON JULY-- OR IN JANUARY THE 18TH, WE RECEIVED 242 NOTIFICATIONS OF POSITIVE CASES IN ONE DAY.
SO THAT WAS SOME OF THE CHALLENGES WE DEALT WITH.
SO WHAT WE REALLY IDENTIFIED AND FELT WE NEEDED TO TRIAGE THE BEST WAS REALLY THE NOTIFICATION OF THOSE CLOSE CONTACTS, AND THEN AT THAT POINT, WE DECIDED THE FORMULATION OF THE DATA FOR SNOHOMISH HEALTH DISTRICT WAS A LITTLE BIT LAGGED BECAUSE WE WERE FOCUSING OUR EFFORTS ON MAKING SURE WE WERE NOTIFYING PEOPLE THAT THEY WERE POSSIBLY A CLOSE CONTACT.
SO THEN WITH THAT INFORMATION, WE THEN HAD TO FORMULATE THE DATA TO BE ABLE TO PRESENT ANY POSITIVE CASES TO SNOHOMISH HEALTH DISTRICT, AND WITH THAT INFORMATION, WE HAVE TO COLLECT THAT INDIVIDUAL'S DATE OF BIRTH, ADDRESS, CONTACT INFORMATION, AND THAT TYPICALLY TAKES A LITTLE WHILE TO AGGREGATE TO BE ABLE TO REPORT BACK TO THE DISTRICT.
AND PART OF THAT WORK IS ALSO QUALITY ASSURANCE AND MAKING SURE THAT THAT INFORMATION ON THAT REPORTED CASE IS CONDENSED AND READY TO BE REPORTED, AND THEN THE OTHER ASPECT OF OUR QUALITY ASSURANCE IS REALLY REVIEWING ALL THOSE MODES OF TRANSMISSION, 'HOW ARE INDIVIDUALS WHO MAY BE CLOSE CONTACTS OF A POSITIVE CASE?' 'ARE THEY THEN BECOMING POSITIVE?' AND REALLY MONITORING THOSE TRANSMISSION TRENDS.
AND THAT ALLOWS THEN US AS AN EXTENDED CABINET TO REALLY REVIEW ANY OF THOSE HIGH RISK
[01:10:02]
TREND SITUATIONS, HIGH NUMBERS IN A CLASSROOM OR SPONSORED ACTIVITY, AND THEN WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS? DO WE GO REMOTE FOR SOME OF THOSE ACTIVITIES, OR DO WE CLOSE SOME OF THOSE ACTIVITIES? AND THEN ONCE THIS HAS ALL BEEN DONE, WE THEN LOOK AT CLOSING OUT THE CASE.WE ENSURE THE COMPLETION OF THE NOTIFICATION DATA IS SUBMITTED TO SNOHOMISH HEALTH DISTRICT AND THEN ONCE A CASE IS FULLY CLOSED, WE THEN ADD THE FINAL DATA TO THE DISTRICT DASHBOARD. SO, IT IS QUITE A BIT OF A PROCESS.
AND THEN WE DID MENTION REVIEWING THOSE HIGH TRENDS OR HIGH CASE REVIEWS, AND TYPICALLY WHAT WE LOOK AT IS STUDENT ATTENDANCE RATES FOR EACH OF THESE SCENARIOS, THE VACCINATION RATES IN EACH OF THESE ACTIVITIES AND OR CLASSROOM SETTINGS, NUMBER OF CASES THAT ARE OCCURRING WITHIN A 14 DAY PERIOD WITHIN THAT SETTING.
WHAT ARE MASKING CONCERNS LOOK LIKE WITHIN THAT CLASSROOM? DO WE HAVE A NUMBER OF STUDENTS WHO MAY HAVE A MASK EXEMPTION BECAUSE THEY ARE HAVING DIFFICULTY WITH COMPLIANCE OR IT'S UNSAFE FOR THEM TO WEAR A MASK? AND THEN ARE WE LOOKING AT SOCIAL DISTANCING MEASURES, LOOKING AT CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT, OTHER MITIGATING FACTORS? AND THEN, OF COURSE, THE NUMBER OF CLOSE CONTACTS WITHIN THAT ENVIRONMENT.
ALL THIS DATA BROUGHT TOGETHER REALLY HELPS US TO MAKE A DETERMINATION, DO WE GO REMOTE WITH A CLASSROOM AND OR GO REMOTE WITH A SCHOOL? NEXT SLIDE. AND SO NOW QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS? I HAD ONE QUESTION ON THE CONTACT TRACING.
HOW DOES IT ACTUALLY WORK IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS? BECAUSE IT SEEMS TO ME EACH STUDENT HAS 180 CONTACTS JUST FROM HIS SIX CLASSES AND THEN HE PROBABLY HAS CLOSE CONTACTS OF A THIRD OF THE SCHOOL AT LUNCH.
SO HOW DO YOU PARE THAT DOWN INTO WHAT REALLY ARE PROBABLY CLOSE CONTACTS? GARY, THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION.
SO WE REALLY HAVE TO FOLLOW THAT STUDENT'S DAY, WALKING THROUGH THE ENTIRE DAY AND FROM THE TIME THAT STUDENT CAME ON CAMPUS TO THE TIME THAT THEY LEFT, AND WE REALLY LOOK AT THOSE HIGHER RISK SCENARIOS IN ENVIRONMENTS.
SO AS WE KNOW, IF A CLASSROOM HAS HAD GREAT SOCIAL DISTANCING AND GOOD MASKING, WE ARE NOW NO LONGER EXPECTED TO FULLY CONTACT TRACE THAT CLASSROOM BECAUSE ALL THE MITIGATING MEASURES HAVE BEEN IN PLACE.
HOWEVER, LUNCH IS A HIGH RISK ENVIRONMENT BECAUSE WE KNOW PEOPLE ARE UNMASKED, THERE MAY NOT BE NECESSARILY MAINTAINING SOCIAL DISTANCING, SO WE REALLY FOCUS ON THOSE HIGH RISK ENVIRONMENTS, AND WE FOLLOW THAT STUDENT'S SCHEDULE TO INDICATE WHAT PERIODS THEY MAY HAVE HAD OF CLASS THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND REALLY DETERMINE WHAT CLOSE CONTACTS COULD HAVE BEEN AS PART OF THAT DAILY EVENT.
SO THIS DOES TAKE A LITTLE WHILE TO MAKE THOSE DETERMINATIONS BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT TO FALSELY INDICATE THAT THAT STUDENT MAY HAVE BEEN A CLOSE CONTACT.
SO WE REALLY ARE TRYING TO BE DILIGENT.
WE LOOK AT ATTENDANCE SCHEDULES, WHO WAS IN SCHOOL, WHO WASN'T IN SCHOOL, SO IT CAN BE A LITTLE LABORIOUS IN TRYING TO MAKE SOME OF THOSE DETERMINATIONS.
WE JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS INCREDIBLE WORK.
THE LEVEL OF DETAIL THAT YOU NEED TO TRACE IS PHENOMENAL.
THANKS, CARIN AND THE REST OF THE BOARD, AND WE REALLY WANTED TO GIVE THE BOARD AND THE COMMUNITY A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT KIND OF HOW THE SAUSAGE WAS MADE.
I MEAN, THIS IS REALLY THE DEVIL IN THE DETAILS, AND IT IS A LOT OF WORK ON THE BACK END.
AND IT'S JUST A LOT OF WORK ON THE BACK END, BY THE SCHOOLS, BY THE TEAM, BY OUR NURSING STAFF, MARA AND-- TO MAKE DECISIONS.
SO I KNOW THAT WE ARE-- THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS.
WE'VE HEARD FROM FOLKS AND ASK OPINION, RAN THIS THROUGH A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE AND WE'LL CONTINUE TO MAKE PROGRESS ON UPDATING THE DASHBOARD AS BEST WE CAN TO ENSURE THAT WE'RE COMMUNICATING [INAUDIBLE] AS BEST WE CAN TO OUR COMMUNITY AND TO OUR PATRONS, SO. HARMONY? I THINK THAT WAS IT FOR THE DASHBOARD, SO THANK YOU, EVERYONE FOR LISTENING.
DR. KATIMS, DID YOU HAVE A QUESTION? I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY I'M IN AWE OF THIS WORK, BOTH THE PROCESS THAT MARA AND HER
[01:15:07]
GROUP AND THE CABINET GO THROUGH, BUT ALSO CHRIS AND HARMONY, YOU KNOW I'M A DATA GEEK, SO OF COURSE I LOVED THIS.BUT I WENT ON THE DASHBOARD YESTERDAY OR THE DAY-- VERY RECENTLY, AND I THOUGHT IT WAS GREAT. I THOUGHT IT WAS VERY USER FRIENDLY.
I WAS ABLE TO FIND THE INFORMATION.
I LOVED THAT I COULD FIND OUT CLASS CLOSURES BECAUSE I KNOW WE'VE HAD EMAILS FROM THE COMMUNITY ASKING, YOU KNOW, NOT JUST SEEING IF A SCHOOL IS CLOSED, BUT IF CLASSROOMS WERE CLOSED. I LOVE THAT YOU SHOWED US WHAT'S ON OTHER DISTRICT DASHBOARDS, SO DON'T TRY TO MODEL US AGAINST THEM BECAUSE YOU ARE LIKE HEADS AND SHOULDERS ABOVE THEM.
ANYWAY, JUST-- I LOVED IT ALL, AND I THINK THAT IT IS DEFINITELY RESPONSIVE TO ALL OF THE QUESTIONS PEOPLE HAVE HAD AND MORE, AND YOU'VE DONE AN AMAZING JOB.
SO, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
YOU'RE WELCOME, AND AS SOON AS DR.
BALDERAS GIVES US THE GREEN LIGHT, CHRIS HAS MAGICAL POWER SO [LAUGHTER].
[INADUIBLE] THE MAGIC BUTTON. MY EXPERIENCE IS DEFINITELY THAT CHRIS HAS MAGICAL POWERS.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS ON THAT? DR. KILGORE? I JUST WANTED TO, OF COURSE, ECHO WHAT EVERYONE SAID, IT'S AMAZING, AND JUST I REALLY APPRECIATE THE THE ABSENTEE, THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS OUT, THE PERCENT OF STUDENTS AND PERCENT OF STAFF OUT.
AND I ALMOST WONDER IF THAT'S SOMETHING WE WOULD CARRY ON IN ADDITION TO MAYBE SOME OTHER INTERESTING FAST FACTS WHEN WE GET OUT OF THIS.
SO JUST A THOUGHT, AND THEN SECONDLY, I WAS JUST-- AS I WAS WATCHING THE PRESENTATION, I WAS THINKING BACK TO THE VERY FIRST DAYS OF THE PANDEMIC WHEN WE WERE JUST GETTING EMAILS AND I WAS ACTUALLY COUNTING UP, YOU KNOW, BASED ON THE EMAILS I GOT, I KEPT TRACK OF MY LITTLE NOTEBOOK TICKING OFF HOW MANY PEOPLE HAD CASES, AND SO, BOY, HAVE WE COME A REALLY LONG WAY AND I APPRECIATE THAT SO MUCH, SO THANK YOU.
GREAT, IF THERE ARE NO MORE COVID QUESTIONS, I WILL GO AHEAD AND TOSS IT OVER TO LYDIA.
SO I WISH I HAD SOME CHRISTMAS MAGICAL POWERS.
WE ARE STRUGGLING A BIT IN THE TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT, SO THIS IS JUST A 'FOR YEAR INFORMATION' SLIDE THAT WE ARE CONTINUING TO EXPERIENCE DRIVER SHORTAGES.
WE WERE REALLY HOPING THAT AFTER THE PROBABLE JANUARY CREST OF OMICRON, THAT THINGS WOULD SETTLE DOWN A BIT, BUT WE STILL HAVE RETIREMENTS AND RESIGNATIONS THAT ARE OUTPACING OUR NEW HIRES. SO WE HAD 168 DRIVERS BEFORE THE START OF THE 2021 SCHOOL YEAR, RIGHT NOW WE'RE AT 134, SO WE HAVE REDUCED A LOT OF ROUTES DOWN TO 117.
BUT WE DON'T STILL HAVE ENOUGH DRIVERS FOR THOSE 117.
FOR INSTANCE, YESTERDAY WE HAD 18 DRIVERS OUT, WHICH ISN'T VERY COMPLETELY ABNORMAL, AND UNFORTUNATELY, THAT LEFT ONE ROUTE WITHOUT A DRIVER, SO THEY DID SOME CONSOLIDATING FOR THE DAY. WE ARE LOOKING AT PERHAPS CONSOLIDATING SOME MORE ROUTES, POSSIBLY INCREASING THE DISTANCE THAT A STUDENT NEEDS TO WALK TO GET TO THEIR BUS STOP IN ORDER TO WEATHER THIS TIME FRAME.
AGAIN, WE ARE STILL ACTIVELY RECRUITING AND HAVE SOME CANDIDATES, SOME TRAINEES IN OUR PROGRAM. WE WILL CONTINUE TO LOOK FOR WAYS TO HIRE AND TRAIN AND GET DRIVERS OUT ON THE ROADS, BUT IT MIGHT JUST BE A LITTLE BIT TURBULENT FOR A FEW MORE MONTHS.
SO WE JUST WANTED THE BOARD TO BE AWARE OF THAT.
LYDIA, CAN I ASK A QUESTION? OF COURSE.
AS YOU'VE CONSOLIDATED ROUTES, HOW HAS THAT INCREASED THE AMOUNT OF TIME THAT STUDENTS HAVE TO-- LIKE WHAT IS, I DON'T KNOW IF YOU KNOW OFFHAND, BUT I'D BE CURIOUS TO SEE SORT OF THE RANGE OF TIME THAT A STUDENT IS ON A BUS TO GET FROM HOME TO SCHOOL OR VICE VERSA AND HOW THAT HAS CHANGED FROM BEFORE PANDEMIC?
[01:20:06]
THE BIGGEST CHANGE IS WE HAD A LOT MORE STOPS IN THE PAST SO THAT THE AVERAGE STUDENT CURRENTLY IS WALKING ABOUT 700 FEET TO THEIR BUS STOP ROUGHLY A QUARTER MILE, AND WHAT YOU DO TO IMPROVE OR DECREASE THE NUMBER OF ROUTES THAT ARE NEEDED AS YOU PUT-- YOU ELIMINATE SOME OF THOSE STOPS AND YOU MAKE STUDENTS WALK FURTHER, AND SO THERE'S LESS TIME THAT THE BUS IS STOPPING AND STARTING AGAIN.HAVE YOU HAD FEEDBACK FROM PARENTS ABOUT ANY PROBLEMS OR CONCERNS THAT HAS CAUSED? A LITTLE BIT OF 'MY STUDENT HAS TO WALK FURTHER NOW' AND AGAIN THAT MIGHT CONTINUE FOR A FEW MORE MONTHS.
WE ARE DOWN IN RIDERSHIP RIGHT NOW BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC, SO WE CAN DO A LITTLE BIT MORE OF THIS WORK BECAUSE THERE ARE FEWER STUDENTS ON SOME OF THE BUSSES, NOT ALL OF THE BUSSES, SO THOSE ARE THE ROUTES THAT WE WOULD LOOK AT IS WHERE THERE'S LOWER ATTENDANCE ALREADY ON THE BUSSES.
THERE'S NO MORE QUESTIONS I THINK WE CAN GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE.
AND I THINK I'M GOING TO TAKE OVER FROM HERE.
GOOD EVENING, MY NAME IS HELEN JOUNG, ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT HERE IN EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND I HAVE SOME NON-RELATED-- COVID NON-RELATED GOOD NEWS.
WE'RE GOING TO BE TALKING ABOUT KINDERGARTEN.
AND SO ON FEBRUARY 2ND, WE HAD A KINDERGARTEN COMMUNITY WEBINAR AND I WANT TO THANK 400 FAMILIES, A LITTLE OVER 400 FAMILIES WERE IN ATTENDANCE, AND WE HAD CENTRAL OFFICE STAFF, AS WELL AS SCHOOL LEADERS TO ANSWER QUESTIONS FROM OUR COMMUNITY, ALL ABOUT KINDERGARTEN AND HOW TO START KINDERGARTEN IN THE FALL AND WHAT TO DO NOW IN PREPARATION FOR OUR LITTLE BABIES WHO WILL BE OUR BABIES IN SEPTEMBER.
SO IF THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO COULD NOT ATTEND FOR WHATEVER REASON, THE RECORDING IS POSTED ON THE DISTRICT WEBSITE AND THERE WERE SIX LANGUAGES-- INTERPRETATION IN SIX LANGUAGES AND ALSO ASL TO ACCOMMODATE OUR VERY DIVERSE COMMUNITY.
AND WE ALSO HAVE JUMP START TO KINDERGARTEN HAPPENING AND THE DATES ARE NOW SETTLED, AUGUST 22ND TO THE 25TH, AND IT'S HALF DAY FOR A MONDAY TO THURSDAY MORNINGS.
AND THE POINT OF THAT IS TO MAKE SURE THAT WE GIVE OUR LITTLE ONES TIME TO ADJUST TO THEIR SCHOOL, THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT BY BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS AND CONNECTIONS WITH OTHER STUDENTS AND TEACHERS, AND JUST LEARNING SCHOOL ROUTINES, TOURING THE SCHOOL, FIGURING OUT WHERE THE LIBRARY IS AND ALSO THE PLAYGROUND AND GETTING ACCLIMATED BEFORE SEPTEMBER.
NEXT SLIDE. AND WE ALSO HAVE OTHER GOOD NEWS.
ENROLLMENT IS STARTING MARCH 1ST FOR ALL FAMILIES, NEW FAMILIES, AND WE HAVE AN ONLINE ENROLLMENT PROCESS HERE IN OUR SYSTEM.
BUT THERE ARE PAPER ENROLLMENT PACKETS AVAILABLE AT ANY SCHOOL THROUGHOUT OUR DISTRICT.
IF YOU PREFER PAPER PACKETS, PLEASE DROP BY YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOL, PICK ONE UP AND MAKE SURE THAT YOU COMPLETE IT, AND IT'S AVAILABLE IN MULTIPLE LANGUAGES AGAIN.
AND WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE WELCOMING OUR NEW FAMILIES AND ALSO OUR CONTINUING FAMILIES BY DOING SOME SCHOOL VIRTUAL WELCOME SESSIONS, AND HOPEFULLY THEY'LL TURN INTO IN-PERSON SESSIONS, BUT FOR NOW, I'M GOING TO MAKE THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT IT WILL BE VIRTUAL. THERE WILL BE SESSIONS IN MARCH, APRIL AND MAY, AND THE DATES WILL BE POSTED ON SCHOOL AND DISTRICT WEBSITE.
ALSO, WE HAVE SCHOOL VIDEO TOURS.
THERE ARE MANY FAMILIES WHO CAN ATTEND EVERY EVENT THAT WE OFFER, AND WE COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND THAT, SO WE MADE VIDEOS.
EVERY SCHOOL IN OUR SYSTEM CREATED VIDEOS AND POSTED ON THEIR SCHOOL WEBSITE SO THAT YOU KNOW WHAT THE CLASSROOMS LOOK LIKE, YOU GET TO MEET THE PRINCIPAL AND THE OTHER SCHOOL LEADERS, LIKE THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL, YOU GET TO SEE WHAT A LIBRARY LOOKS LIKE AT A CERTAIN SCHOOL IN OUR DISTRICT.
ALL OF THIS EFFORT IS TO ENSURE THAT OUR FAMILIES FEEL WELCOME AND THAT OUR FAMILIES HAVE OPPORTUNITIES TO START THE YEAR IN A POSITIVE WAY.
ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS ABOUT ANYTHING THAT I COVERED? ALL RIGHT, NEXT SLIDE.
AND I'M GOING TO HAND IT BACK TO DANA TO TALK ABOUT SUMMER SCHOOL.
JUST A QUICK UPDATE ON SUMMER PROGRAMING, [INAUDIBLE] OUR STAFF IS MEETING WEEKLY WITH PEOPLE FROM A VARIETY OF DEPARTMENTS AS WE TALK ABOUT SUMMER 22 AND OUR ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY WILL BOTH HAVE IN-PERSON SERVICES, THERE WILL NOT BE REMOTE SERVICES THIS
[01:25:03]
SUMMER, TRANSPORTATION WILL BE PROVIDED, WORKING ON THAT, AND OUR ESSER FUNDS.SOME OF THE ESSER FUNDS ARE DEDICATED TO LEARNING RECOVERY AND ACCELERATION.
WE WILL PROBABLY ALSO A COUPLE IN SOME TITLE ONE AND POSSIBLY LAP FUNDS, WHICH COULD ALSO BE USED TO SUPPORT, ESPECIALLY THAT K-6 PROGRAMING.
THE DATES ARE JULY 11TH THROUGH AUGUST 5TH.
THE AM SESSION WITH LUNCH WILL BE FOR K-8 AND IN THE AM-- THE SECOND-- THE GRADES 9-12 WILL HAVE AN AM AND PM SESSIONS WITH LUNCH, AND REALLY, AGAIN, THAT FOCUS ON CREDIT RECOVERY [INAUDIBLE] INCREDIBLE CREDIT ATTAINMENT LAST SUMMER, AND WE HOPE TO DO THAT AGAIN. SO WE ARE BRINGING IN ALSO SOME OTHER PARTNERS WORKING-- LOOKING FORWARD TO WORKING WITH THE FOUNDATION AND FOOD SERVICE AND AGAIN OUR TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT AND MAYBE EVEN MOVE 60 TO COORDINATE ALL OF THESE SERVICES AND THINGS, GIVING SOME OPPORTUNITIES FOR KIDS.
DANA, ON THE SUMMER SCHOOL, IT SEEMS REALLY CLEAR TO ME, I MEAN ALL OF IT LOOKS AMAZING, BUT IT SEEMS REALLY CLEAR TO ME THAT WE HAD SUCCESS LAST SUMMER WITH THE HIGH SCHOOL BECAUSE OF THE NUMBER OF CREDITS RECOVERED WAS INCREDIBLE.
ARE WE LOOKING, ARE YOU NOT ME, BUT IS THE DISTRICT LOOKING AT DATA TO SEE IF THERE--, IF WE ARE SEEING-- IF WE SAW ANY SUCCESS WITH THE LOWER GRADES, ACADEMIC SUCCESS OR OTHERWISE, LAST SUMMER LEARNING SUCCESS? YES. SO A COUPLE OF THINGS AND THAT DATA IS REALLY DRIVING OUR DECISIONS ON WHO COMES TO SUMMER PROGRAMING THIS SUMMER, RIGHT? USING DATA TO DRIVE WHO WE SERVE AND THEN SOME DATA COMING IN, SOME PRE AND POST DATA AND SEEING WHERE KIDS ARE, AND THEN SOMETIMES THAT SEL DATA IS REALLY HARD TO MEASURE, BUT WE DO HAVE PANORAMA DATA AND WE'LL HAVE THAT RIGHT PRIOR TO SUMMER PROGRAMING IN MAY AND THEN WE HAVE IT AGAIN IN THE FALL.
AND THAT'S THAT SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING THAT WE KNOW OUR KIDS NEED TO BE WRAPPED AROUND WITH. SO A COUPLE OF THINGS, WE'RE GOING TO USE OUR IREADY DATA AND THEN WE'LL USE OUR PANORAMA DATA, PRE AND POST, AND USE IT NOT ONLY TO HELP DRIVE WHO GOES TO SUMMER PROGRAMING, BUT THE GROWTH THAT'S MADE AND THEN LOOK AT THAT SO WE CAN ASSESS THE EFFICACY OF OUR SERVICES.
OK, WILL YOU COME BACK AND REPORT THAT YES. THANK YOU.
YEAH, I'M JUST THINKING LONG TERM.
YOU KNOW, RIGHT NOW THIS IS SUSTAINABLE WITH ESSER FUNDS, BUT OF COURSE, I'D ALSO LIKE TO MAKE A CASE THAT THIS IS A REALLY GOOD PROGRAM FOR THE FUTURE, YOU KNOW, AGAIN.
I HAVE THE SENSE, BUT I DON'T HAVE THE DATA YET.
I HAVE THE SENSE THAT THIS HAS A NUMBER OF BENEFITS FOR A CERTAIN KIND OF STUDENT.
GOOD EVENING. GREG SCHWAB, ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS, AND I JUST WANT TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT OF DATA FROM FIRST SEMESTER.
SO, BUILDING ON THE SUCCESS WE HAD LAST SUMMER WITH GRADUATION ALLIANCE AND THE SUMMER SCHOOL CREDIT RETRIEVAL PROGRAM, WE IMPLEMENTED THE SAME PROGRAM FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR.
THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE WAS THAT WHILE STUDENTS DURING SUMMER SCHOOL HAD THREE TO FOUR HOUR CHUNK OF TIME EACH DAY, DEDICATED SOLELY TO WORKING ON JUST GRADUATION ALLIANCE CREDIT RETRIEVAL COURSES, OUR STUDENTS WERE ENROLLED IN A PERIOD OF CREDIT RETRIEVAL DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR, AND SO WE WANTED TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT OF DATA WITH YOU ABOUT THE COURSES THAT THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS ENROLLED AND THE NUMBER OF COURSES THAT WERE COMPLETED AT EACH OF OUR HIGH SCHOOLS, SO.
EDMONDS WOODWAY, WE HAD 93 STUDENTS ENROLLED AND THOSE STUDENTS COMPLETED 83 COURSES IN THE FIRST SEMESTER, AND THESE ARE ALL ADDITIONAL CREDITS.
SO THESE ARE STUDENTS THAT WERE TAKING FIVE CLASSES, PLUS THE CREDIT RETRIEVAL CLASS AND IN MULTIPLE CASES WORKING ON MULTIPLE COURSES DURING THE SEMESTER.
MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL HAD 32 STUDENTS ENROLLED, WITH 31 COURSES COMPLETED.
MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL, 69 STUDENTS ENROLLED, 56 COURSES COMPLETED AND LYNNWOOD HIGH SCHOOL 68 STUDENTS AND 69 COURSES COMPLETED.
SO AGAIN, WE WERE VERY HAPPY WITH THIS SUCCESS WE SAW.
THESE ARE ALL COURSES THAT STUDENTS NEEDED TO RECOVER CREDIT IN.
THESE ARE COURSES THEY PREVIOUSLY FAILED, AND SO WE'RE VERY EXCITED ABOUT THE DATA AND CONTINUING TO BUILD ON THE SUCCESS WE SAW LAST SUMMER.
AND I THINK WE'RE ON TO THE NEXT SLIDE.
GREG, I JUST WANTED TO SAY, IF YOU COULD GO BACK.
THIS IS REALLY GREAT TO SEE, AND IT WOULD BE REALLY INTERESTING TO FOLLOW THESE KIDS LONGITUDINALLY TO-- BECAUSE I'M ASSUMING THEY'RE NOT ALL SENIORS, RIGHT? RIGHT, BUT IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO FOLLOW THESE KIDS--.
[01:30:01]
YOU KNOW ME, I'M ALWAYS TRYING TO THINK OF THESE RESEARCH STUDIES, BUT SORRY.BUT TO FOLLOW THEM LONGITUDINALLY AND SEE HOW THE PERCENT OF THEM WHO END UP GRADUATING VERSUS STUDENTS WHO ARE IN SIMILAR SITUATIONS AS THEY WERE, WHEREVER THEY [INAUDIBLE] AT THE TIME HERE, WHO DIDN'T GO THROUGH THESE KIND OF RECOVERY EFFORTS TO SEE THE IMPACT.
ANYWAY, JUST OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD.
THAT'S THE KIND OF QUESTION, YOU KNOW, THE INFORMATION WOULD BE SO INTERESTING TO SEE WHAT THE IMPACT AND EFFECT IS OF THIS BECAUSE IT LOOKS REALLY GREAT.
ABSOLUTELY. AND GREG IS-- JUST ONE THING, AND YOU CAN GET THIS DATA TO ME LATER IF YOU CAN PULL IT OUT, BUT I'M JUST CURIOUS.
PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS OR PERCENTAGE OF COURSES ATTEMPTED VERSUS COMPLETED LIKE--.
RIGHT. YEAH, BECAUSE YOU'VE GOT LIKE 68 STUDENTS WHO DID 69 COURSES IN LYNWOOD.
IT'S A TOTALLY DIFFERENT NUMBER OF LIKE 34 DID 2, AND 34 GOT NONE.
YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? COOL. THANK YOU. AND JUMPING OFF OF THAT, THANKS, KEITH FOR THAT, BECAUSE I'D LOVE TO ALSO SEE THE BREAKOUT BY DEMOGRAPHICS OF KIDS HERE.
AND IT COULD--. IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE BY SCHOOL, NECESSARILY, IT COULD BE ACROSS ALL OF THEM, BUT TO SEE, YOU KNOW, THE EXTENT TO WHICH THIS IS PROPORTIONATE TO OUR STUDENT POPULATION OR NOT? ABSOLUTELY. ALL RIGHT, THANK YOU.
ALL RIGHT, I WILL TAKE THIS NEXT SLIDE.
SO WE WANT TO END BEFORE WE TOSS IT BACK TO DR.
BALDERAS, AND WE WANT TO END WITH THE LITTLE PROGRESS REPORT OF OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK.
OUR COMMUNITIES SUPPORTING OUR CAPITAL LEVY THAT WAS SUCCESSFUL IN APRIL, AND WE'RE ABLE TO FINISH SPRUCE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
SO KIND OF PIGGYBACKING ON WHAT HELEN WAS TALKING ABOUT THESE SCHOOL TOURS.
RIGHT? IT'S REALLY EXCITING THAT THESE SCHOOLS GET TO GIVE YOU A GLIMPSE INTO THEIR SCHOOL WITH A VIDEO, AND SO SPRUCE, IT'S A LITTLE DIFFERENT STORY RIGHT NOW, AND SO WE'RE GOING TO PLAY THIS VIDEO AND THANK YOU TO EMILY MOORE AND EVERYONE AT CAPITAL PROJECTS AND ALL OF OUR PARTNERS FOR HELPING PUT IT TOGETHER.
SO SIT BACK, RELAX AND TAKE A MOMENT.
HELLO, DRAGONS. MY NAME IS EMILY MOORE, AND I AM THE PRINCIPAL AT SPRUCE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
TO ALL OF OUR FAMILIES, WHETHER YOU'VE BEEN WITH US SINCE KINDERGARTEN OR WHETHER YOU ARE JOINING US TODAY AS A NEW STUDENT, WELCOME TO SPRUCE.
YOU MIGHT NOTICE THAT I'M NOT STANDING IN FRONT OF OUR SCHOOL.
THAT IS BECAUSE OUR BRAND NEW SPRUCE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IS CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION.
WHILE I CAN'T TAKE YOU ON A TOUR OF OUR NEW CLASSROOM WING OR SHOW YOU THE LIBRARY OR TAKE YOU OUT TO THE PLAYGROUND, I DO WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU THE PROGRESS THAT OUR WONDERFUL TEAM OF ARCHITECTS AT BASSETTI, [INAUDIBLE] CONSTRUCTION TEAM AT BNBUILDERS ARE MAKING ON OUR BEAUTIFUL NEW SCHOOL.
OUR PHASE ONE BUILDING WAS COMPLETED ALMOST THREE YEARS AGO AND CONTAINS A BEAUTIFUL NEW MUSIC ROOM, CAFĆ AND GYM CONNECTED TO OUTDOOR PLAY AND LEARNING SPACES.
THIS BUILDING WILL ALSO HOUSE THE MAIN ENTRY AND OUR ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES FOR SPRUCE.
WE ARE VERY LUCKY THAT EVEN THOUGH THIS BUILDING WAS BUILT A FEW SHORT YEARS AGO THAT WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE, OUR NEW SPRUCE WILL LOOK AS IF IT WAS BUILT AT THE SAME TIME.
PHASE TWO, TOGETHER WITH PHASE ONE, WILL CREATE A UNIFIED SCHOOL.
AS OF TODAY, OUR TEAM IS ABOUT 50 PERCENT DONE.
EXTERIOR WALLS ARE BEING WORKED ON.
THE TEAM CONTINUES TO WORK ON WINDOW INSTALLATION, INTERIOR WALLS, MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS. IF YOU GET A CHANCE TO DRIVE BY THE WORKSITE, YOU WILL SEE WORKERS BUILDING THE PARKING LOTS, BUS LOOP, AND MORE.
THE NEW SCHOOL WILL PROVIDE CLUSTER ARRANGEMENT OF CLASSROOMS DESIGNATED BY THE FOUR SEASONS WITH SHARED FLEXIBLE, COLLABORATIVE AND OUTDOOR LEARNING SPACES.
THE BUILDING WILL BE TWO STORIES WITH CLASSROOMS ON BOTH THE FIRST AND SECOND FLOOR.
WE ARE SO EXCITED TO MOVE INTO THIS GORGEOUS NEW SPACE IN AUGUST OF 2022.
I ENCOURAGE YOU TO STAY CONNECTED TO OUR WEBSITE AND SPRUCE NEWS FOR REGULAR UPDATES ABOUT THE CONSTRUCTION AND THE COMING MOVE.
STAY TUNED FOR TOUR DATES FOR THE NEW BUILDING, HOPEFULLY IN PERSON COMING SOON.
WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION TO COME.
BALDERAS. I WANT TO THANK THE STAFFER FOR ALL THE PRESENTATIONS, I KNOW [INAUDIBLE] WAS A LITTLE LONG AND-- BUT WE REALLY WANTED TO HAVE THE BOARD AND COMMUNITY REALLY UNDERSTAND
[01:35:03]
HOW WE-- THE COVID DASHBOARD TRULY WORKS.SO THANK YOU FOR ALL THE ENERGY THERE.
TURN IT BACK TO PRESIDENT KATIMS. THANK YOU, AND TO ALL THE STAFF FOR THAT, REALLY, VERY INFORMATIVE AND INTERESTING SET OF INFORMATION FOR US.
NEXT, I'M GOING TO ASK LYDIA SELLIE, WHO IS OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS AND FINANCE, TO DO THE BUDGET REPORT FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER.
THANK YOU, DIRECTOR KATIMS, I WISH I HAD A VIDEO.
I'M GOING TO GO FAIRLY QUICKLY THROUGH SOME OF THE FINANCIAL DATA, SPEND A LITTLE BIT EXTRA TIME ON THE ENROLLMENT DATA THIS MONTH BECAUSE DECEMBER LOOKS A WHOLE LOT LIKE NOVEMBER DID. SO AGAIN, THE FIRST TIME WE'LL SEE SOME CHANGES IS IN THE JANUARY REPORT WHEN THE OSPI BALANCES UP OUR ENROLLMENT ACTUAL NUMBERS INSTEAD OF USING OUR BUDGETED NUMBERS. SO JUST TO POINT OUT ON THIS SLIDE, WE MADE OUR PRINCIPAL AND INTEREST PAYMENT OUT OF THE DEBT SERVICE FUND FOR EXISTING BONDS.
IT LOOKS LIKE THERE'S ONLY A LITTLE BIT LEFT TO SPEND AND THAT BECAUSE ALL OF OUR PRINCIPAL PAYMENTS ARE IN DECEMBER, AND THAT LEAVES JUST INTEREST IN THE JUNE PAYMENT.
SO THERE'S THAT ACTIVITY THERE.
IF WE WOULD GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE.
JUST WANTED TO POINT OUT, YOU'LL GET A LITTLE BIT MORE OF THIS IN OUR BUDGET STUDY SESSION ON THE 22ND, YEAR TO DATE WE ARE JUST UNDER FIVE MILLION WHERE EXPENDITURES ARE HIGHER THAN REVENUES.
THAT DIFFERS THAN LAST YEAR THAT WE WERE AHEAD, BUT THAT IS EXTREMELY CONSISTENT WITH OUR BUDGET. AND AGAIN, I WILL GO INTO A LITTLE BIT MORE DEPTH AT OUR FEBRUARY 22ND STUDY SESSION. SO NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE.
THESE ARE ALL TRENDING VERY CONSISTENTLY WITH WHERE WE WERE AT IN NOVEMBER.
SO I WILL SKIP AHEAD, CHARELL, TO THE LINE GRAPH.
AND AGAIN, YOU'LL SEE AT THE START OF THE YEAR, THE BLUE LINE, WHICH IS THE CURRENT YEAR, AND THE RED LINE, WHICH IS LAST YEAR, STARTED OUT AT ABOUT THE SAME PLACE FOR VARIOUS REASONS, WE ARE EXPECTING THAT BLUE LINE TO DECREASE OUR ENDING FUND BALANCE.
BUT BECAUSE WE STARTED THE YEAR HIGHER THAN WE BUDGETED, IT WILL BE COMING IN HIGHER THAN WHAT WE BUDGETED, SO EVEN THOUGH IT'S A DECLINE, IT'S STILL BETTER THAN ANTICIPATED.
THANK YOU FOR SOME FEEDBACK FROM THE SCHOOL BOARD BECAUSE I'M A LITTLE BIT USED TO LOOKING AT THIS AND WHEN I PUT SOME, I'M NOT USED TO LOOKING AT THIS EYES ON THIS, I REALIZED IT IS PRETTY CONVOLUTED AND RATHER MESSY.
AND SO THE QUESTION IS, WHAT DOES ENROLLMENT NORMALLY DO? AND THAT'S WHAT MADE ME REALIZE THAT WE HAVE THREE YEARS OF PANDEMIC ENROLLMENT ON THIS SLIDE. WE DON'T HAVE ANY YEARS WITH QUOTE UNQUOTE NORMAL ENROLLMENT.
I'M SEEING THE DASHBOARD, IS EVERYBODY SEEING THE DASHBOARD? OK. OH, THERE WE GO.
SO THE GREEN LINE, AND THE GREEN BARS REPRESENT 19-20 ENROLLMENT. SO IN A NORMAL YEAR, SEPTEMBER IS A LITTLE LOW.
OCTOBER OR NOVEMBER IS OUR HIGH MONTH, JAN TENDS TO BE KIND OF LIKE SPOT ON WITH THE AVERAGE, AND THEN YOU SEE SOME SLIGHT DECREASES WITH SOME HIGHER DECREASES IN MAY AND JUNE, AS SOME UPPERCLASSMEN EITHER WITHDRAW FROM SCHOOL OR FIND ALTERNATE LEARNING ARRANGEMENTS, PERHAPS THEY ARE CREDIT DEFICIENT AND THEY MAKE SOME OTHER CHOICES IN THE SPRING. SO, FOR 19-20, FOR SEPTEMBER THROUGH FEBRUARY, THAT-- FEBRUARY THROUGH MARCH,
[01:40:05]
IS ACTUAL DATA AND IT WAS TRENDING THE WAY WE EXPECTED.AND THEN IN MARCH, OSPI ASKED THAT WE SHUT DOWN SCHOOLS.
THEY ALSO GAVE US THE ABILITY TO HOLD ENROLLMENT CONSTANT FOR MARCH THROUGH JUNE.
SO THE ONLY SLIGHT DECREASES YOU SEE ARE IN THINGS LIKE RUNNING START AND END CAPS.
SO THE BASIC K-12 ENROLLMENT IS FLAT BECAUSE OSPI ALLOWED US TO KEEP US FLAT.
SO NORMALLY YOU WOULD SEE MORE OF AN UMBRELLA.
THEN LAST YEAR, THE RED GRAPHS SHOULD HAVE FOLLOWED MORE ALONG THE GREEN, BUT WHAT HAPPENED IS WE STARTED-- WE WANTED TO GO HYBRID, BUT WE HAD TO START IN REMOTE, AND THEN WE STARTED ADDING SOME POPULATION OF STUDENTS BACK INTO THE SCHOOLS AND A LOT OF STUDENTS IN THE SPRING, WHEN WE OPENED BACK UP OUR DOORS TO IN-PERSON LEARNING, MADE SOME ALTERNATIVE CHOICES.
SO THERE WAS A SHARPER DECREASE IN THE SPRING THAN WHAT WE HISTORICALLY SEE.
THE BLUE LINE THE, CURRENT YEAR, IS ACTUALLY TRENDING EXACTLY LIKE WE'D EXPECT TO SEE.
SEPTEMBER BEING A LOW MONTH, STUDENTS OFTEN DON'T COME BACK THAT WEEK OF THE LABOR DAY BREAK. THEY MIGHT SHOW UP A DAY OR TWO LATER, BUT IT'S OFTEN TOO LATE FOR THE SEPTEMBER COUNT, WE COUNT ENROLLMENT EACH MONTH THROUGH JUNE, OCTOBER-NOVEMBER INCREASED AS WE EXPECTED, DECEMBER'S FAIRLY FLAT WITH NOVEMBER, JANUARY WILL BE ABOUT THE SAME, FEBRUARY TENDS TO HOLD STEADY AND THEN WE SEE SOME SLIGHT DECREASES IN THE EARLY SPRING, WITH SOME ADDITIONAL INCREASES IN THE LATER SPRING.
SO IT SHOULD LOOK MORE LIKE A BIT OF A DISTORTED UMBRELLA.
SO WHAT I WAS THINKING I MIGHT DO FOR OUR NEXT BUDGET STATUS REPORT IN JANUARY IS PUT THE TWO PREVIOUS YEARS, THE PRE-PANDEMIC YEARS, SO YOU CAN GET A GOOD FEEL FOR WHAT ENROLLMENT TYPICALLY DOES.
SO I HOPE THAT HELPS BECAUSE IT DOES LOOK RATHER MESSY ON THE SLIDE.
AND THAT COMPLETES MY REPORT, WE HAVE THE FIVE MORE PAGES OF THE REQUIRED BUDGET STATUS FOR EACH FUNDS, AND AS ALWAYS, I ENCOURAGE YOU TO ASK QUESTIONS, EITHER HERE OR IN ADVANCE OF THE MEETING OR EVEN A WEEK FROM NOW, WHEN YOU THINK OF SOMETHING THAT YOU WANT TO ASK IS FINE. I THINK I KNOW THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION, I THINK IT'S GOING TO BE BECAUSE ENROLLMENT IS DOWN, ON OUR BAR GRAPH THIS YEAR IS COMING IN LOWER THAN THE PREVIOUS THREE YEARS OVERALL, AND THAT'S, I'M ASSUMING, JUST BECAUSE ENROLLMENTS BEEN DOWN SO WE'RE GETTING LESS STATE FUNDING? THERE ARE SOME OTHER ITEMS. WHAT I SHOULD SHARE WITH YOU IS OUR BUDGET PREPARATION DOCUMENTS FOR 21-22.
THERE'S A ONE PAGER THAT I SHARE WITH THE BOARD DURING THE BUDGET PROCESS AND IT SHOWS ALL THE KNOWN ADDITIONS TO THE BUDGET, THE INCREASE IN FUNDING AND ALSO THE INCREASE IN EXPENDITURES. SO I WILL JOT MYSELF A NOTE TO MAKE SURE THAT SHARED WITH YOU.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? THANK YOU, LYDIA. THANK YOU.
[12. NEW BUSINESS 8:00 pm]
NEXT ON THE AGENDA IS NEW BUSINESS AND ITS APPROVAL FOR-- SINGLE READING APPROVAL OF THE GUARANTEED MAXIMUM PRICE AMENDMENT FOR THE EDUCATIONAL SERVICE UNDER THE DISTRICT OFFICE, HVAC, LIGHTING, ROOF UPGRADE PROJECT, AND INCREASE IN TOTAL PROJECT BUDGET.DO I HEAR A MOVE TO APPROVE? SO MOVED. I'LL SECOND.
I'VE HEARD A MOVE TO APPROVE AND A SECOND.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? I DO WANT TO SAY ONE QUICK THING ON THIS ONE.
I KNOW THAT THIS HAD BEEN APPROVED PREVIOUSLY AND THIS IS JUST A FOLLOW THROUGH ON IT,
[01:45:04]
BUT IN LIGHT OF THE MONROE SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND I KNOW THAT SOME OF THE HEALTH PROBLEMS THEY'VE BEEN HAVING OVER THERE WERE DUE TO OUTDATED LIGHTING, WHICH I SEE IS COVERED IN HERE, AND THEN JUST SEEING THAT WITH THE ROOF LEAKING, I THINK WE'RE ALL AWARE OF THE RISKS MOLD PRESENT AND WHATNOT.SO I'M JUST GLAD THAT THIS IS-- I'M VIEWING THIS AS A HEALTH AND SAFETY THING, AND SO I THINK IT'S REALLY GREAT THAT WE ARE GOING TO MAKE SURE THIS PROJECT GETS DONE.
I THINK THAT FOLKS IN THE COMMUNITY MIGHT BE WONDERING, THOUGH, WHY WE'RE SPENDING MONEY ON AN UPGRADE TO THE DISTRICT OFFICE WHEN WE SO DESPERATELY NEED SOME OF OUR SCHOOL BUILDINGS TO BE REPLACED, AND AS SOMEONE WHO WORKED IN THE DISTRICT OFFICE FOR ABOUT 17 YEARS, I HAVE A REALLY GOOD SENSE OF THE NEEDS.
FIRST OF ALL, THE COST TO DO THIS WORK ARE FAR LOWER THAN REBUILDING A NEW SCHOOL, AND THE FUNDS ARE COVERED IN THE 2020 CAPITAL LEVY FOR WHICH WE REALLY APPRECIATE OUR VOTER SUPPORT. THAT CAPITAL LEVY MONEY IS ALSO REBUILDING TWO OF OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS DURING THIS TIME, YOU SAW THE WORK ON SPRUCE AND OAK HEIGHTS WILL ALSO BE TAKEN CARE OF, SO WE ARE ALSO WORKING ON OUR SCHOOLS.
AND IT'S IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND THAT MONEY IN OUR CAPITAL PROJECTS FUND CAN'T BE USED FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH BUILDINGS AND PROPERTY.
SO TO BE CLEAR, IT COULD NOT BE USED FOR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS OR SERVICES.
SECONDLY, OUR DISTRICT OFFICE IS WAY PAST TIME FOR THESE NEEDED REPAIRS.
AND IF YOU HAVEN'T VISITED THE DISTRICT OFFICE, YOU SHOULD KNOW IT AS DEFINITELY NOT A LUXURY PLACE TO WORK LIKE SOME OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OFFICES IN OUR AREA THAT I'VE SEEN . NEARLY ALL THE DISTRICT STAFF WORK IN SMALL OPEN CUBICLES RATHER THAN CLOSED OR SPACIOUS OFFICES. WHEN I WORKED THERE, THE ROOF FREQUENTLY LEAKED.
WE HAD TO MOVE LARGE BARRELS AROUND TO PUT THEM UNDER THE LEAKS.
THE VENTILATION WAS SO BAD THAT WHENEVER A NEW PERSON STARTED WORKING IN THE DISTRICT OFFICE, WE WERE NEVER SURPRISED WHEN THEY BECAME SICK DURING THEIR FIRST YEAR BECAUSE THE VENTILATION WAS SO BAD AND SOME PEOPLE, AT ANY GIVEN TIME, ARE FREEZING AT THEIR DESKS WHILE OTHERS ARE SWEATING FROM THE HEAT.
I HOPE YOU'RE GETTING THE PICTURE.
I WANT TO MAKE SURE THE PUBLIC UNDERSTANDS THAT OUR DISTRICT STAFF DESERVES A HEALTHY AND SAFE WORKPLACE LIKE, KEITH SAID, LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, AND IN THE PAST, WE'VE ALWAYS DEFERRED THE MONEY OUT TO THE SCHOOLS.
I THINK IT'S HIGH TIME THAT WE FINALLY GIVE SOME ATTENTION TO OUR DISTRICT BUILDING AS WELL. SO THAT'S MY INPUT.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS? OK. HEARING NONE, I'M GOING TO ASK ALISON TO DO A ROLL CALL VOTE, PLEASE.
DIRECTOR NOBLE. GARY, YOU'RE MUTED.
I'M SORRY, I-- MY MOUSE MOVED OFF IT, SO I-- THE SPACE DIDN'T WORK ANYWAY, SO I SAY AYE.
AYE. DIRECTOR KATIMS. AYE. AND THE MOTION PASSES.
NEXT, AND I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS, DIRECTOR CHASE IS GOING TO GIVE US A
[14. LEGISLATIVE UPDATE]
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE.THANK YOU, PRESIDENT KATIMS. WELL, WE ARE NOW HALFWAY THROUGH THIS SHORT LEGISLATIVE SESSION.
WE HAD, AND THE LAST DAY FOR BILLS TO GO OUT OF THE HOUSE OF ORIGIN ARE COMING UP ON THE 15TH OF THIS MONTH, SO WE'LL SEE HOW MANY OF OUR BILLS THAT WERE TRACKING DO ACTUALLY MAKE IT. AS YOU KNOW, WE'RE TRACKING UNDER BROAD GENERAL CATEGORIES.
BUDGET STABILITY, TRANSPORTATION AND STAFFING ALLOCATIONS ARE THREE GENERAL CATEGORIES, AND THE BILLS ASSOCIATED WITH THE QUESTIONS THERE DO HAVE SOME LEGS, MEANING THEY'RE CONTINUING TO MOVE FORWARD.
THE OSPI DID A STATEWIDE WEBINAR, JUST TODAY, AND SOME OF THE NOTES FROM THERE ARE ACTUALLY VERY INSIGHTFUL.
THE TRANSPORTATION FUNDING FOR, WE BELIEVE, HOMELESS FOSTER AND SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS ARE LIKELY GOING TO HAVE SOME FUNDING CHANGES THERE, BUT NOT LIKELY ANY CHANGES TO THE FUNDING FORMULA THAT WE'RE CURRENTLY USING FOR TRANSPORTATION FUNDING.
[01:50:01]
SO WE'LL JUST KIND OF HAVE TO SEE HOW THAT GOES.REMEMBER THAT WE'RE ONLY HALFWAY THROUGH THE SESSION, RIGHT? THE ENROLLMENT STABILIZATION IS MOVING FORWARD.
WE DON'T THINK THAT WE'LL HAVE AS MUCH FUNDING AVAILABLE AS WE THINK, BUT AGAIN, WE ARE JUST HALFWAY THROUGH.
THE PROTOTYPICAL SCHOOL MODEL FUNDING HAS BEEN AT A POINT OF EMPHASIS FOR SEVERAL YEARS, PERHAPS IT'LL GET SOME ATTENTION THIS YEAR, AND THERE ARE THOUGHTS FROM OSPI THAT THERE'S NOT GOING TO BE ENROLLMENT STABILIZATION, POSSIBLY NEXT YEAR, BUT VERY LITTLE WHILE THE PROTOTYPICAL MONEY IS, WELL, [INAUDIBLE] THE MONEY IS COMING IN, AND THE FEDERAL MONIES ARE PHASING OUT. IT'S LIKE A TRANSITION STRATEGY THAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT.
SOME OF THIS IS FROM THE NOTES THAT WE HAVE FROM THE OSPI WEBINAR, SO I'LL BE HAPPY TO FORWARD SOME OF THAT ALONG.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT THIS LEGISLATIVE SESSION HAS AFFORDED IS FOR US TO HAVE MEETINGS WITH ALL EXCEPT ONE OF OUR NINE REPRESENTATIVES, AND SO I WANT TO THANK DR.
BALDERAS AND HARMONY AND ALLISON AND LYDIA FOR ALL THE WORK IN HELPING TO ATTEND ALL OF THESE MEETINGS. IT'S HARD TO SAY WHERE WE ARE IN SOME IN THIS LEGISLATIVE SESSION.
WE'RE MOVING FORWARD, NOT AS MUCH AS WE LIKE.
THERE WILL CONTINUE TO BE UPDATES AS WE GO, AND SO, DR.
BALDERAS, DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO ADD ON THIS? I THINK IT'S JUST--.
SO I REALLY APPRECIATE THE TIME SPENT WITH OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS FROM OLYMPIA AND IN BEING IN A REMOTE SETTING, IT MAKES IT EASIER FOR US TO BE ABLE TO GET TO MORE PEOPLE, BUT, AS DIRECTOR CHASE MENTIONED, JUST MAKING SURE PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT THERE'S A NARRATIVE OUT THERE THAT SCHOOLS HAVE THESE ADDITIONAL FUNDS, AND WE DO, THEY'RE ESSER DOLLAR-- FEDERAL DOLLARS THAT ARE ONE TIME DOLLARS THAT ARE NOT SUSTAINABLE FOR LONG TERM EXPENSES.
SO THAT'S ONE THING THAT WE NEED TO CONTINUE TO TO SPEAK OUT IN TERMS OF THESE DOLLARS ARE BEING SPENT NOW AND HAVE BEEN SPENT ON PPE AND IN STAFFING, SO-- AND ALSO PAYING FOR SUMMER SCHOOL. SO THESE ARE ONE TIME DOLLARS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN EQUITABLY DISTRIBUTED ACROSS CAMPUS-- ACROSS DISTRICTS.
YOU KNOW, WE WERE ON A CALL WITH NORTH SHORE, FOR EXAMPLE, AND THEY COMPARED THEIR DOLLAR AMOUNT TO US. THEN I COMPARED OUR DOLLAR AMOUNT TO OTHER DISTRICTS.
THEY HAVE A LOT MORE BECAUSE IT WAS BASED ON TITLE FUNDING.
SO AGAIN, JUST APPRECIATE THE CONVERSATIONS WITH THE ELECTED OFFICIALS AND BE ABLE TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS FOR FUTURE DISCUSSIONS AS WELL.
SO THANK YOU, DIRECTOR CHASE, FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP.
YOU KNOW ONE THING I ALSO DID WANT TO ADD THAT WE WERE HAVING A LOT OF CONVERSATIONS WITH OUR REPRESENTATIVES TO HELP US CHALLENGE THE NARRATIVE THAT SCHOOLS ARE FLUSH.
THERE'S PLENTY OF MONEY AND HOW THAT MAY IMPACT SOME OF THE RESULTS THAT WE'RE HOPING TO SEE TONIGHT, AND SO THERE'S A LOT OF AWARENESS THAT IN OUR ELECTED DELEGATION THAT THE ESSER DOLLARS ARE ONE TIME MONIES AND THEY'RE HELPING TO TRY TO CHALLENGE THAT NARRATIVE THAT GETS OUT THERE. SOMETIMES.
IT'S VERY INTERESTING. AND SO I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THE-- I'M SURE THAT HARMONY IS REFRESHING THE ELECTION RESULTS AS WE SPEAK, AS IT'S AFTER EIGHT O'CLOCK TODAY TOO.
AND THE--. ONE THING, I'M SORRY, I DO WANT TO MENTION THAT WE WILL BE HAVING, AFTER THE SESSION IS OVER, OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE WITH OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS WITH MORE OF OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF AND GET SOME MORE ONE ON ONE TIME AND OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS ARE ALSO VERY INTERESTED IN THAT.
CARIN, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT REPORT AND ALSO FOR KEEPING US UPDATED AND FOR SETTING UP THESE VARIOUS ONE ON ONES AND OR MEETINGS WITH THE VARIOUS STATE LEGISLATORS WHO SERVE US AND FOR US TO BE ABLE TO INTERACT WITH THEM.
SO, ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FOR CARIN? WELL, WE'LL BE WATCHING THAT LEGISLATION JUST AS WE'RE WATCHING FOR LEVY RESULTS.
[LAUGHTER] SO WE ARE AT A PLACE WHERE WE CAN GET OUR BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS, AND LET'S
[15. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS]
START WITH DIRECTOR SMITH.ALL RIGHT. YOU KNOW, I REALLY LOVED THE PRESENTATION [INAUDIBLE] THAT SCRIBER LAKE HIGH PUT ON, AND IT GOT ME THINKING ABOUT MY TIME IN THE DISTRICT NOW, ALMOST 20 YEARS AGO, I
[01:55:01]
GUESS, AND HOW I WAS PROBABLY IN THE LOWER RIGHT HAND QUADRANT OF THEIR GRAPH.I WAS A STUDENT THAT-- I WAS ON TRACK AND I DID FINE.
HAD LIKE A 3.5, A'S AND B'S, BUT I JUST WAS NOT ENGAGED.
I DID A LOT OF WORK AS AN UNDERCLASSMEN.
BY THE TIME I REACHED MY JUNIOR SENIOR YEAR, I JUST FELT LIKE I HAD BETTER THINGS TO DO AND I WASN'T REALLY BUYING INTO THE SYSTEM.
AND THEN I WENT TO COLLEGE AND IT TOOK ME A LITTLE BIT OF TIME TO FIND INSTRUCTORS THAT I REALLY GELLED WITH AND GOT THAT, AND IT TURNED OUT THAT WAS WHAT I NEEDED FOR MY EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE WAS I NEEDED THE HANDS-ON STUFF.
I NEEDED A ONE-- SORT OF ONE ON ONE THAT THAT TOOK AN INTEREST IN ME WHERE I COULD REALLY SHOW WHAT I HAD TO SAY.
AND I THINK IT'S FANTASTIC THAT SCRIBER HAS THESE PROGRAMS THAT'S GIVING THAT TO KIDS, AND I THINK IT'S GREAT THAT FROM WHAT I HEAR, THERE'S SOME OTHER PROGRAMS AT MOUNTLAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL WITH THE SMALL HOMES AND OUR OTHER HIGH SCHOOLS THAT ARE GIVING KIDS THAT OPPORTUNITY THAT MAYBE EXISTED IN THE DISTRICT WHEN I WAS THERE, MAYBE DIDN'T, BUT I DEFINITELY NEVER FOUND.
SO I THINK THAT'S A FANTASTIC THING, AND I REALLY JUST WANT TO, YOU KNOW, HOPEFULLY WE AS A BOARD AND THE DISTRICT CAN HELP FOSTER THOSE PROGRAMS SO THAT KIDS CAN REALLY BE ENGAGED IN THEIR LEARNING EXPERIENCE AND GET THE MOST OUT OF IT THEY CAN GET.
YEAH. FIRST OF ALL, I DON'T WANT YOU TO FORGET THE STUDENTS FOR THEIR COMMENTS ALSO.
I JUST WANTED TO THANK SCRIBER, THAT WAS A GREAT PRESENTATION, AND I REALLY APPRECIATE THE COVID PRESENTATION AND ALL THE WORK'S BEEN DONE TO IMPROVE OUR COVID DASHBOARD.
I APPRECIATE YOU SHOWING US WHAT THE OTHER DISTRICTS LOOK LIKE RIGHT NOW, AND WE ARE SO FAR AHEAD OF THEM IN THE TRANSPARENCY AND THE DATA WE PUT OUT AND JUST VERY PROUD OF OUR DISTRICT FOR THAT. SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
THANK YOU, DIRECTOR NOBLE AND DIRECTOR CHASE.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU, DIRECTOR KATIMS. SO A LOT OF THE WORK THAT I'VE BEEN DOING IS TRACKING A LOT OF THE LEGISLATION, AND WE'VE GOT QUITE A FEW BILLS THAT ARE BEING TRACKED THAT ARE OUTSIDE OF THOSE BROAD CATEGORIES THAT I'M GOING TO BE POSTING A LINK FOR EVERYONE TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE 200 BILLS THAT ARE BEING TRACKED BY WSSDA RIGHT NOW BECAUSE A LOT OF THESE THINGS WILL BE COMING UP NEXT YEAR. AND IT'S SOMETHING THAT AS A BOARD, WE MAY WISH TO CONSIDER A POSITION ON SOME OF THESE. WHEN WE-- WHEN I REPRESENT WSSDA, WE REPRESENT THE POSITIONS THAT WSSDA HAS ON ANY OF THE TESTIMONY OR SIGNINGS IN.
BUT WE AS A BOARD CAN COLLECTIVELY FIND BILLS THAT ARE IN ALIGNMENT WITH OUR [INAUDIBLE]-- OUR, EXCUSE ME, OUR LEGISLATIVE AGENDA AND DO MORE FORMAL PRESENTATIONS.
SO I REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO TALKING MORE AS A BOARD ON SOME OF THESE POSITIONS AND SOME SPECIFIC BILLS AS WE CONTINUE TO MOVE FORWARD, AND OF COURSE, I LOVE THE SCRIBER PRESENTATIONS AND THE COVID DASHBOARD ALSO.
BEFORE I GO ON TO DIRECTOR KILGORE, I REALIZED I DIDN'T ASK THE STUDENTS YET FOR THEIR INPUT, AND I APOLOGIZE.
IT IS NOT THAT I DON'T LOVE YOU BECAUSE I DO.
I WAS JUST SO EXCITED TO HEAR SOME OTHER NEWS THAT WE'LL BE SHARED, HOWEVER [LAUGHTER]--.
ISABEL, YOU COME UP FIRST IN MY BOXES HERE.
DO YOU HAVE SOME COMMENTS YOU'D LIKE TO MAKE? YEAH, I'D LIKE TO THANK ALL THE PRESENTERS FOR ALL THEIR INFORMATIONAL PRESENTATIONS, INCLUDING THE COVID, AND IT WAS REALLY INTERESTING TO LEARN ABOUT LIKE THE CLOSE CONTACTS, ESPECIALLY IN HIGH SCHOOL, BECAUSE THAT'S ALWAYS BEEN THE QUESTION FOR A LOT OF HIGH SCHOOLERS SINCE WE ARE OBVIOUSLY IN CONTACT WITH A LOT OF STUDENTS.
AND IT WAS ALSO GREAT TO HEAR FROM THE HIGH SCHOOLERS THAT SCRIBER LAKE, THAT WAS GREAT, AND I ALSO WANT TO MENTION THAT THE FOUNDATION FOR THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS A REALLY GREAT SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE FOR SENIORS OF THE DISTRICT, AND I KNOW IN PAST YEARS THEY HAVEN'T REALLY GOTTEN ENOUGH APPLICANTS.
SO I REALLY JUST WANT TO MAKE IT KNOWN THAT THAT'S OUT THERE FOR STUDENTS.
AND I ALSO WANT TO RECOGNIZE THAT IT'S BLACK HISTORY MONTH, AND I WANT TO SHARE THAT OUR BSU CLUB AT EDMONDS WOODWAY HAS A BLACK STUDENT UNION CLUB.
THEY'VE SHARED VIDEOS WITH EACH ADVISORY TEACHER, SO IT'S REALLY GREAT BECAUSE WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO WATCH THESE VIDEOS ON DIFFERENT BLACK HISTORICAL FIGURES, AND I THINK THAT'S BEEN VERY GREAT AND INFORMATIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL.
AND THANK YOU. THANKS, ISABEL, THAT WAS VERY HELPFUL AND INFORMATIVE AND INTERESTING.
[02:00:04]
RITIKA, I KNOW YOU ALWAYS HAVE SOMETHING GOOD TO SAY.WELL, FIRST OF ALL, I'M WITH ISABEL, [INADUIBLE] WANT TO RECOGNIZED BLACK HISTORY MONTH THIS MONTH AND RECOGNIZE ALL OF THE HISTORY WITH THAT, AND I'M HOPING THAT EACH SCHOOL IS TAKING THE OPPORTUNITY TO RECOGNIZE THAT AND TEACH THOSE IMPORTANT LESSONS NOT ONLY THIS MONTH, BUT EVERY MONTH, BECAUSE THAT'S IMPORTANT.
I ALSO WANT TO THANK DIRECTOR CHASE FOR ALWAYS BEING-- MAKING THE COMPLICATED PROCESS OF LEGISLATIVE THINGS A LITTLE BIT LESS COMPLICATED.
I KIND OF LIKE TO CALL IT BILL SEASON WHEN WE START HAVING, YOU KNOW, BEING ABLE TO TRACK THE BILLS, AND IT'S ALWAYS EXCITING TO SEE WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THAT, 2020, THE SILVER LINING OF 2020 WAS THAT I WAS ABLE TO GET ON TO THE LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE WHEN WE DID THAT AND THEN KIND OF GO OFF OF THAT, AND THIS YEAR, SAME THING.
I'VE APPRECIATED THE-- THERE'S BEEN SOME REALLY OPEN DIALOG BETWEEN GOVERNOR-- SUPERINTENDENT REYKDAL AND STUDENTS, SO I [INAUDIBLE] APPRECIATE THE CANDID WILLINGNESS TO GET COMMENTS ON THAT LEVEL AS WELL.
THE LEVY ACTUALLY ENDED UP BEING MY FIRST PLACE THAT I WAS ABLE TO VOTE THIS YEAR, SO FEELING A LITTLE BIT OLD.
BUT THAT BEING SAID, TIME IS ABSOLUTELY FLYING BY, I FOUND MYSELF LOOKING THROUGH THE COURSE CATALOG YESTERDAY FOR QUOTE UNQUOTE NEXT YEAR, ONLY TO REALIZE THAT I DON'T ACTUALLY NEED TO DO THAT.
FIRST SEMESTER HAS ENDED AND I WANT TO RECOGNIZE THE TEACHERS BECAUSE, WOW, IT'S BEEN A CRAZY FIRST SEMESTER FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS.
SO THE FACT THAT WE'VE MADE IT THROUGH THAT FIRST SEMESTER, THAT'S ALWAYS LIKE THE HALFWAY POINT. WE DID IT.
BALDERAS PRESENCE AT MTHS TODAY, I KNOW THERE WAS A LITTLE BIT OF EXCITEMENT ABOUT THAT YESTERDAY, AND I HOPE THAT THAT WAS A GOOD VISIT.
ON THE TOPIC OF MASKS AND ALL OF THE STUFF THAT'S BEEN GOING AROUND REGARDING HOW OTHER STATES ARE TAKING AWAY THE MASK MANDATE AND ALL THAT STUFF, WITH THE-- SPEAKING OF HOW MUCH TIME HAS PASSED, JUST A REMINDER TO THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE THAT WE'RE STILL IN THE THICK OF THE PANDEMIC AND UNTIL, YOU KNOW, HEALTH OFFICIALS HAVE OFFICIALLY DECIDED THAT THE LIFTING THE MASK MANDATE IS A GOOD IDEA.
IT ISN'T GOING TO HAPPEN, AND FOR THE MOMENT, MASKS HAVE WORKED.
THE LAST THING WE WANT TO DO IS STEP THREE STEPS BACKWARD AND SHUT DOWN AGAIN BECAUSE OF COMPLACENCY IN MASK WEARING.
SO JUST A REMINDER TO KEEP THAT GOING.
IT CAN BE ANNOYING, BUT IT DOES SCIENTIFICALLY SAVE LIVES.
OTHERWISE, THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO PRESENTED TONIGHT AND IT IS COUNSELOR APPRECIATION, SO A HUGE THANKS TO COUNCILORS FOR ALL THEY DO AS WELL.
THANK YOU, RITIKA. IT'S SO HEARTWARMING TO HEAR OF STUDENTS LIKE YOU AND OUR OTHER ADVISORS WHO ARE SO ACTIVE AND AWARE POLITICALLY OF WHAT'S HAPPENING.
DON'T FEEL OLD THAT YOU'RE VOTING, BUT FEEL VERY RESPECTED THAT YOU'RE ABLE TO DO IT AND THAT YOU ARE GOING TO BE A GREAT CITIZEN AND WE APPRECIATE YOUR AWARENESS AND KEEPING TRACK OF EVERYTHING.
DANIEL. HI, EVERYONE, I JUST WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE PRESENTATIONS.
I REALLY APPRECIATED THE UPDATES TO THE COVID 19 DASHBOARD THAT THE DISTRICT OFFERS.
I THINK THAT WAS A REALLY HUGE STEP TOWARDS OFFERING MORE TRANSPARENCY FROM THE SCHOOL BOARD AND LIKE THE BEHIND THE SCENES TO THE STUDENTS, BUT ALSO THE PARENTS AND VOLUNTEERS. AND I JUST THINK THAT IT JUST GAVE US A LOT MORE INSIGHT ON HOW WE'RE HANDLING THIS WHOLE SITUATION.
YOU KNOW, I WAS COVID POSITIVE LIKE THREE OR FOUR WEEKS AGO, AND I DIDN'T REALLY REALIZE HOW IT COULD IMPACT, BUT, YOU KNOW, THROUGH THE DASHBOARD AND JUST THROUGH GREAT COMMUNICATION THROUGH MY-- THROUGH EDMONDS WOODWAY'S PRINCIPAL AND MY TEACHERS, WE WERE ALL ABLE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO.
AND I THINK I'M JUST REALLY APPRECIATIVE OF THE STEPS THAT THE DISTRICT IS TAKING TO MAKE SURE THAT-- THAT WERE ALL AFFECTED BY THIS PANDEMIC, BUT THEN WE'RE STILL ABLE TO GAIN THE POSITIVES OUT OF IT AND JUST STILL STRIVE ON.
AND YEAH. AND JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE SAID, IT'S BLACK HISTORY MONTH, AND I HOPE ALL THE SCHOOLS ARE TAKING THE NECESSARY STEPS TO TEACH THE STUDENTS THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS
[02:05:02]
MONTH. BUT ALSO IT'S COUNSELOR APPRECIATION WEEK, AND I THINK THE FOUR STUDENT ADVISORS HERE ARE ALL SENIORS, I THINK, SO, YOU KNOW, BEING SECOND SEMESTER, JUST A HUGE THANK YOU TO OUR COUNSELORS FOR HELPING WITH LIKE OUR COLLEGE APPLICATIONS AND JUST THE LAST FOUR YEARS. THANK YOU, DANIEL, AND I'M GLAD YOU'RE FEELING BETTER.IT'S REALLY INTERESTING, THOUGH, TO HEAR FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE AS A STUDENT WHO WENT THROUGH THE COVID PROCESS, I'M SORRY YOU DID IT, BUT IT'S INTERESTING AND HELPFUL FOR US TO HEAR FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE.
SO WE'RE GLAD YOU'RE HERE WITH US TO SHARE THAT.
AND LIA, WOULD YOU LIKE TO MAKE SOME COMMENTS? YEAH, OF COURSE.
SO I WOULD LIKE TO ECHO, [INAUDIBLE] ABOUT SCRIBER LAKE HIGH SCHOOL AND THE [INAUDIBLE]. THOSE ARE REALLY GOING [INAUDIBLE] SHARING THAT WITH [INAUDIBLE].
I HAD OTHER [INAUDIBLE] WHO MAY SEEM INTERESTED IN THAT.
I ALSO [INAUDIBLE] THANK THE PEOPLE ON WHO ARE WORKING ON [INAUDIBLE] DASHBOARD.
[INAUDIBLE] A LOT OF QUESTIONS THAT I HAD [INAUDIBLE] MY PARENTS [INAUDIBLE] AND MY FRIENDS AND OTHER PARENTS [INAUDIBLE].
I ALSO [INAUDIBLE] SCHOOL AND WE HAD A [INAUDIBLE] TEAM MEETING TODAY.
IT WAS SPECIFICALLY TO [INAUDIBLE] OUR STUDENTS [INAUDIBLE] IN HIGH SCHOOL [INAUDIBLE] ONE. [INAUDIBLE] HEAR ME? YOU'RE GOING IN AND OUT [INAUDIBLE].
IT'S AS IF YOUR RECEPTION ISN'T QUITE STABLE.
OK. I THINK [INAUDIBLE] A LITTLE BIT OF THE SAME ISSUE.
I'LL JUST KIND OF CUT IT SHORT.
[INAUDIBLE] LIKE TO ADD HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH AND THANK YOU, EVERYBODY.
WE COULD KIND OF GET THE GIST OF WHAT [LAUGHTER] YOU WERE SAYING, WE APPRECIATE YOUR INPUT AND ALSO YOU'RE SHARING THE EXPERIENCES OF OTHERS WHO WERE, YOU KNOW, GETTING THE INFORMATION FROM THE DASHBOARD.
AND SO NOW I'M GOING TO GO BACK.
DEBORAH, THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE.
I KNOW YOU UNDERSTAND HAVING BEEN HERE, BUT I'D LOVE TO HEAR WHAT DIRECTOR KILGORE HAS TO SAY. OH, SURE, YOU WOULD.
I'M JUST-- I'M IN A SILLY MOOD TONIGHT, I THINK.
MAYBE THOSE-- OUR ELECTION RESULTS ARE LOOKING PRETTY GOOD FOR US, SO IT'S MAKING ME A LITTLE SILLY. BUT YES, I ECHO EVERYONE.
THERE'S SOME GREAT THINGS HAPPENING IN THE DISTRICT AND I THINK THAT OUR COMMUNITY, AS-- SEEMS TO RECOGNIZE THAT.
AS DR. BALDERAS MENTIONED, HE AND I VISITED MOUNT LAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL TODAY, WHICH IS-- YOU KNOW, I'M A PARENT OF A STUDENT AT MOUNT LAKE TERRACE HIGH SCHOOL, BUT HE BEGAN DURING THE PANDEMIC AND HAS ONLY JUST THIS YEAR BEEN IN THE BUILDING FULL TIME.
SO I HAVEN'T VISITED QUITE AS MUCH AS YOU WOULD THINK A PARENT OF A STUDENT THERE WOULD.
BUT ANYWAY, WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY NOT ONLY TO VISIT THE CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM, THE CARPENTRY PROGRAM, WHICH IS JUST A PHENOMENAL, LONG RUNNING, WONDERFUL PARTNERSHIP WITH LYNNWOOD ROTARY.
THEY'VE THE STUDENTS THEMSELVES HAVE BEEN BUILDING HOUSES AND WE SAW THE TINY HOME ON SITE, BUT THERE IS ALSO A PROJECT OFF SITE TO BUILD A DUPLEX THAT THEY'RE HOPING THAT ONE SIDE OF THAT DUPLEX WILL BE COMPLETED BY, I THINK, HE SAID, LATE SPRING.
SO I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO HOPEFULLY GETTING OVER THERE TO SEE IT WHEN IT'S COMPLETED.
THEY USUALLY HAVE A CELEBRATION AND A CHANCE TO HONOR THOSE STUDENTS.
WE ALSO SPOKE WITH TEACHERS IN THE STEM PROGRAM, AND THEY EXPRESSED
[02:10:10]
SIMILAR DESIRES OF THE BOARD AND THE DISTRICT TO GET THE WORD OUT FOR THEIR PROGRAM, SO LIKE SCRIBER LAKE PRINCIPAL HELLMAN WAS SAYING, THAT SCRIBER LAKE WOULD LIKE TO GET THE WORD OUT. THE SAME THING CAN BE SAID FOR THE STEM PROGRAM, WHICH IS ALSO JUST AN INCREDIBLE PROGRAM THAT WE HAD THE CHANCE TO VISIT A CLASS IN PROGRESS ONE-- WELL, WE VISIT A FEW, BUT ONE IN PARTICULAR WAS AN AEROSPACE ENGINEERING CLASS AND IT WAS VERY HANDS ON. THEY WERE WORKING WITH COMPOSITES AND LEARNING ABOUT MATERIAL SCIENCE, WHICH I KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUT, BUT I KNOW ENOUGH TO KNOW THAT THAT'S AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND NEW EXCITING FIELD.AND SO IT'S REALLY COOL TO SEE OUR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WORKING WITH COMPOSITE MATERIALS.
SO ANYWAY, I WAS VERY IMPRESSED, AND I THINK DR.
BALDERAS WAS ALSO VERY IMPRESSED AND PRETTY EXCITED ABOUT IT.
AND SO WE'LL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THAT AND OTHER PROGRAMS THAT MEET THE UNIQUE NEEDS OF ALL OF OUR UNIQUE STUDENTS.
I'M ALSO, I WOULD PUT IT IN A WORD OF JUST SUPPORT FOR THE PARENTS WHO, THE PUBLIC SPEAKERS WHO CAME IN TONIGHT, AND WROTE IN, YES, I'D LIKE TO SEE VOLUNTEERS BACK IN THE SCHOOLS. IT'S WELL PAST TIME, AND IT'S, YOU KNOW, I RECOGNIZE THAT WE-- IT'S VERY CHALLENGING TO GET EVERYBODY PROCESSED, BUT I HOPE THAT WE CAN DO THAT BECAUSE THAT'S OUR COMMUNITY AND THAT'S A VERY IMPORTANT LINK TO OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR FAMILIES.
AND FINALLY, THIS-- ON THURSDAY, I'M GOING DOWN TO OLYMPIA.
I'M PARTICIPATING IN THE LEADERSHIP WSSDA PROGRAM THIS YEAR.
I DIDN'T HAVE A CHANCE TO DO IT WHEN I WAS THE PRESIDENT BECAUSE I JUST DIDN'T HAVE THE TIME, [LAUGHTER] BUT AFTER THE FACT, I'M GOING TO GO DO IT AND HOPEFULLY BRING BACK ALL KINDS OF WISDOM.
AND IN PARTICULAR, THE REASON I BRING IT UP AT THE MEETING IS, I HOPE IF ANYBODY HAS A QUESTION FOR A SUPERINTENDENT REYKDAL, I UNDERSTAND THAT ON OUR AGENDA WE'LL BE MEETING WITH HIM FOR AN HOUR THIS WEEK.
SO IT'S A RELATIVELY SMALL GROUP, I MEAN, I DON'T KNOW 20 PEOPLE OR SOMETHING.
SO IF WE HAVE SOME QUESTIONS, I THINK I MIGHT BE ABLE TO GET A WORD IN EDGEWISE.
SO SEND IT MY WAY AND I'LL TRY TO TURN AROUND AND ASK IT, OR IF YOU WANT TO YELL AT HIM, I'M PRETTY GOOD AT THAT TOO, SO I'LL BE YOUR PROXY.
OTHER THAN THAT, YOU KNOW, HAPPY FEBRUARY AND HAPPY DAYS FOR ALL OF US.
THANKS, DEBORAH, AND CONGRATULATIONS ON BEING PART OF THAT LEADERSHIP FOR WSSDA.
I HOPE-- I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR LEARNING AND COMING BACK AND SHARING [LAUGHTER] WHAT YOU'RE LEARNING, THAT'S REALLY GREAT, AND ACTUALLY YOUR DESCRIPTION OF THE STEM PROGRAM AT TERRACE IS, JUST REALLY-- I WISH ALL OUR KIDS COULD HAVE ACCESS TO COURSES LIKE THAT.
I HAVE JUST SOME VERY BRIEF COMMENTS, SO WE DON'T ELONGATE THE MEETING TOO LONG.
SCRIBER LAKE, GREAT PRESENTATION.
THE DASHBOARD, LIKE I SAID, I'M IN AWE OF, I THINK THE STAFF HAS DONE A GREAT JOB, BUT WHAT I'D LIKE TO SAY I'M REALLY KIND OF EXCITED ABOUT IS HEARING PLANNING FOR KINDERGARTEN, FOR SUMMER SCHOOL, FOR SEEING SPRUCE--.
IT'S LIKE GETTING BACK TO REAL LIFE, THAT'S WHAT SORT OF THOSE TOPICS SAY TO ME IS WE'RE GETTING PAST, EVEN THOUGH WE SPENT A LOT OF TIME ON COVID, WE'RE GETTING INTO WHAT REGULAR SCHOOLING IS ABOUT.
AND SO I'M VERY EXCITED ABOUT THE PLANNING THAT'S UNDERWAY FOR THAT.
AND JUST A BIG THANKS TO THE STAFF BECAUSE I KNOW THAT EVERYTHING THAT'S GOING ON RIGHT NOW IS YOUR REGULAR JOBS PLUS EVERYTHING ELSE ON TOP OF IT.
AND I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO DR.
IT'LL BE REALLY BRIEF, JUST WANTED TO UPDATE THE BOARD WE DID HAVE A PRELIMINARY ELECTION
[02:15:01]
RESULTS WERE AT A POSITIVE 60.5 PERCENT IN FAVOR OF THE LEVY PASSING, COMPARED TO 39.5 NOT. SO, WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THE ALL-- ABOUT THAT.THOSE NUMBERS JUST CAME OUT, SO I THINK THAT'S WHY STAFF ARE-- THEY'RE OFF SCREENS THEY'RE CELEBRATING RIGHT NOW JUST BECAUSE ALL THE WORK THAT THEY DID AND ALL THE BOARD AND THE COMMUNITY. SO THAT'S EXCITING.
AND AGAIN, 15 PERCENT OF OUR BUDGET COMES FROM THIS LEVY, OPERATING BUDGET COMES FROM THIS LEVY, SO IT'S A GOOD REASON TO BE EXCITED.
SO JUST APPRECIATE ALL THE SUPPORT FROM THE COMMUNITY, OUR ASSOCIATION PARTNERS AND YOU, THE BOARD FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP IN THIS EFFORT.
SO THANK YOU. [INAUDIBLE] WANT TO PROVIDE THOSE QUICK COMMENTS.
GREAT, AND I'D LIKE TO ADD MY THANKS TO THE VOTERS WHO RECOGNIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF SUPPORTING THE SCHOOLS.
ONE LAST ITEM BEFORE WE ADJOURN IS ASKING THE BOARD MEMBERS ARE THERE ANY TOPICS OR ITEMS
[16. ITEMS FOR CONSIDERATION AT FUTURE MEETINGS]
THAT YOU'D LIKE TO HAVE FOR CONSIDERATION ON FUTURE BOARD MEETINGS? IF YOU THINK OF ANY, ANY TIME ALONG THE WAY, YOU CAN EMAIL ME AND WE CAN FOLLOW UP THAT WAY AS WELL, SO--.BUT IT'S ALWAYS OPEN FOR TOPICS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE ON THE AGENDA.
AND WITH NO OTHER DISCUSSION, I THANK EVERYBODY AND THIS MEETING IS ADJOURNED.
