[6. School Presentation 6:40 pm]
NEXT, WE HAVE A SCHOOL PRESENTATION FROM LYNWOOD ELEMENTARY.YES, SO I APPRECIATE WE HAVE JACQUELINE HENRY AND ALSO TOM WHITE HERE, AND THEY'RE GOING TO BE PRESENTING AN OVERVIEW AND PRESENTATION ON LYNNWOOD ELEMENTARY AND APPRECIATE THEM TAKING TIME DURING A BUSY, BUSY TIMES OF THE YEAR TO DO THIS.
BUT ALSO SUBSEQUENTLY, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN UPDATE.
I KNOW THAT'S SOMETHING THAT STAFF HAVE TALKED TO OUR SCHOOL BOARD OF DIRECTORS ABOUT IN TERMS OF LITTLE CHANGE IN PRACTICE FOR THE BOARD TO TRULY GET A FLAVOR OF THE WORK IN ACTION AT THE BUILDING LEVEL AND AT THE CLASSROOM LEVEL.
SO WE'VE STARTED OFF WITH LYNNWOOD ELEMENTARY, SO APPRECIATE STAFF BEING ON.
THANK YOU, JACQUELINE AND TOM.
GOOD EVENING PRESIDENT KILGORE AND MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AND DR.
TONIGHT WE'RE STARTING OUT WITH OUR AMAZING STUDENT PRESENTATION, AND AS I'M LOOKING THROUGH OUR PARTICIPANT LIST AND JUST WANTING TO CONFIRM THAT OUR STUDENTS HAVE MADE IT INTO THE ZOOM ROOM SO THAT I CAN TURN IT OVER TO THEM.
I'M GOING TO ALLOW MR. WHITE, OUR FOURTH GRADE TEACHER, TO GO AHEAD AND UNMUTE AND INTRODUCE OUR TWO AMAZING TEACHER CANDIDATES WHO ARE ALSO PART OF THE PRESENTATION, AND THEN JUST DO A DOUBLE CHECK FOR OUR STUDENTS TO MAKE SURE WE'RE READY TO GO HERE.
WE, OUR STUDENTS HAVE NOT SHOWN UP YET.
THERE'S A LITTLE BIT OF A MISCOMMUNICATION THERE.
JACK, I WONDER IF THERE'S ANY CHANCE THAT YOU COULD GO FIRST AND THEN WE COULD GO SECOND.
OR IS THAT BREAKING THE RULES? I THINK THAT WOULD BE FINE.
SHERELL, IS IT POSSIBLE WE COULD SWITCH OVER TO THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PRESENTATION? YES, JUST ONE MOMENT.
WELL, WHILE OUR OUR STAFF AND STUDENTS ARE GETTING SITUATED HERE, I'M HAPPY TO GO FIRST.
AGAIN, MY NAME IS JACQUELINE HENLEY AND GREETINGS TO YOU, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD.
REALLY EXCITED TO BE HERE THIS EVENING TO PRESENT TO YOU AND NOT ONLY THE AMAZING WORK OF OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF AND TEACHERS CANDIDATES, BUT ALSO THE WORK OF OUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN.
[00:05:03]
SO TONIGHT I HAVE THE PRIVILEGE OF SHARING WITH YOU OUR THREE OVERARCHING GOALS FOR OUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN, THE FIRST OF WHICH IS AROUND OUR ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS, AND I'M GOING TO SUMMARIZE THESE GOALS FOR YOU THAT THE FIRST IN ELA THAT FROM THE FALL OF 2021 THROUGH SPRING OF 2024.OUR GOAL IS FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES KINDERGARTEN THROUGH SIXTH GRADE TO BE ABLE TO READ AT GRADE LEVEL STANDARD, INCREASING FROM FORTY FOUR TO FORTY NINE PERCENT AS MEASURED BY OUR I READY READING DIAGNOSTIC AND RUNNING RECORDS ASSESSMENT OR MATHEMATICS ON THAT SAME TIMELINE FOR OUR STUDENTS IN KINDERGARTEN THROUGH SIXTH GRADE.
IT'S THAT OUR STUDENTS WILL BE PERFORMING AT GRADE LEVEL STANDARD AS WELL IN MATHEMATICS, INCREASING FROM THIRTY SEVEN TO FORTY TWO PERCENT TO MEETING STANDARD AS MEASURED BY OUR IREADY READING ASSESSMENT AND CURRICULUM EMBEDDED ASSESSMENTS FROM OUR MATH EXPRESSIONS CURRICULUM.
AND OUR THIRD GOAL IS AROUND OUR STUDENT ENGAGEMENT, WHICH ALIGNS WITH OUR NEW STRATEGIC PLAN ABOUT ALL STUDENTS FEELING A SENSE OF BELONGING.
AND THAT IS THAT ALONG THAT SAME TIMELINE, OUR STUDENTS WILL SHOW AN INCREASE IN THEIR SELF DETERMINED BELIEF OF THEIR OWN SELF-EFFICACY THAT THEY CAN DO HARD THINGS FROM FIFTY FOUR TO FIFTY NINE PERCENT AND THAT THEY HAVE A SENSE OF BELONGING IN OUR COMMUNITY HERE AT LYNNWOOD, INCREASING FROM SIXTY TWO TO SIXTY SEVEN PERCENT.
AND WE MEASURE THAT USING OUR PANORAMA STUDENT WELLNESS SCREENER, WHICH IS GIVEN ON A EVERY FEW MONTH BASIS AND THEN ALSO A K-2 IN-HOUSE DEVELOPED DATA COLLECTION PROCESS.
OUT OF THOSE THREE GOALS WE WERE ASKED TO SHARE WITH YOU ONE OF THEM AND TO ELABORATE SOME MORE DETAILS.
AND SO THIS EVENING I'VE CHOSEN OUR LITERACY GOAL TO SHARE MORE WITH YOU.
AND THE REASON THAT I'VE CHOSEN LITERACY IS THAT, YOU KNOW, IT'S OUR BELIEF THAT LITERACY IS A FOUNDATIONAL SKILL FOR ALL OF THE ACADEMIC CONTENT AREAS.
AND LITERACY TRULY HAS BEEN OUR PRIMARY FOCUS FOR OUR BUILDING OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS BEYOND MITIGATING THE NEEDS OF THE PANDEMIC.
AND WITH OUR RECENT DISTRICT ADOPTION OF OUR UNITS OF STUDY FOR READING CURRICULUM, OUR COMMUNITY HAS REALLY CENTERED THEMSELVES ON LEARNING AND DELIVERING THIS CURRICULUM WELL IN ORDER TO SUPPORT OUR TIER ONE STUDENT LEARNING IN OUR SCHOOL.
AND SO OUR THEORY OF ACTION IS THAT IF WE AS A LYNNWOOD STAFF, PROVIDE A GUARANTEED AND VIABLE CURRICULUM WHICH MEETS ALL OF OUR COMMON CORE STANDARDS FOR BEST PRACTICES IN LITERACY, THEN OUR STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE A STRONGER AND MORE RIGOROUS CURRICULUM, WHICH WILL AID THEM IN MEETING GRADE LEVEL EXPECTATIONS, ESPECIALLY IN FLUENCY AND COMPREHENSION.
AND ADDITIONALLY, IT WILL MEAN THAT KIDS HAVE A COMMON EXPERIENCE FROM CLASSROOM TO CLASSROOM AND RECEIVE STRONGER CORE INTERVENTIONS.
FIRST OFF, TO SUPPORT THEIR LEARNING GAPS AND SO THAT GUARANTEEING VIABLE CURRICULUM MEANS THAT NO MATTER WHAT CLASSROOM YOU WALK INTO OUR KIDS ARE GUARANTEED THAT SAME EXPERIENCE AND SAME CONTENT.
SO WE HAVE A NUMBER OF STRATEGIES TO ACTUALIZE OUR ELA GOAL OF INCREASING THAT NUMBER OF STUDENTS ACHIEVING BENCHMARK PROFICIENCY IN THE FIRST IS AGAIN TO PROVIDE THAT GUARANTEED AND VIABLE CURRICULUM.
AND THE SECOND IS TO MONITOR OUR STUDENT LEARNING THROUGH COMMON ASSESSMENTS.
AND AND SO WHY? WHY THESE STRATEGIES? IT'S OUR STRONG BELIEF THAT.
IT'S CORE TO OUR KIDS SUCCESS THAT THEY BOTH LEARN TO READ AND LOVE TO READ.
AND IN ADDITION TO THAT, THE LEADING EDUCATIONAL RESEARCHERS OUT THERE HAVE SHOWN EVIDENCE THAT THE NUMBER ONE INITIATIVE A SCHOOL CAN ENGAGE IN IS IN RAISING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IS TO MAKE SURE THAT KIDS ARE RECEIVING THAT GUARANTEED AND VIABLE CURRICULUM.
IT ENSURES THAT KIDS FROM CLASSROOM TO CLASSROOM ARE HAVING AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN AND THAT NO MATTER WHAT PART OF THEIR DAILY SCHOOL EXPERIENCE, EACH STUDENT IS RECEIVING A SAME AND OR ALSO DIFFERENTIATED CONTENT FOR WHAT THEY NEED.
IT HELPS US AS A SCHOOL TO BE THOUGHTFUL ABOUT HOW WE'RE ALIGNING NOT ONLY FROM CLASSROOM TO CLASSROOM ACROSS THE GRADE, BUT THEN ALSO TO EXPAND UPON THAT K-6 VERTICAL LENS AND OR MIDDLE SCHOOL AND BEYOND SO THAT WE'RE ABLE TO SPIRAL THAT CURRICULUM AND GUARANTEE THAT LEARNING FROM ONE GRADE IS PASSED ON TO THE NEXT.
AND THEN WHEN IT COMES TO OUR COMMON ASSESSMENTS, USING OUR TIME AND EFFORT TO IMPLEMENT OUR DATA TOOLS IN A UNIFIED WAY AND KNOW HOW TO LEVERAGE THE DATA THAT WE RECEIVE FROM THOSE TOOLS WITH FIDELITY, WE CAN THEN BEGIN TO ACTUALIZE WHAT THOSE SPECIFIC INTERVENTIONS ARE THAT KIDS NEED AND GIVE TEACHERS TIME TO AN OPPORTUNITY TO REFLECT
[00:10:03]
AND THINK, IS THIS CURRICULUM MEETING OUR NEEDS FOR STUDENTS? AND HOW DO WE THEN FILL MAYBE THE HOLES OR RECOVER THINGS THAT STUDENTS MIGHT NEED AN EXTRA IN? AND SO WE REALLY WANT TO ENSURE BECAUSE THEY MEAN SO MUCH TO US THAT OUR KIDS ARE FEELING LIKE CONFIDENT READERS AND BOTH LOVE TO READ, BUT ALSO BE ABLE TO ACCESS THROUGH TEXT IN NO MATTER WHAT CONTENT THE AREA THEY ARE.AND THE REASON WHY WE'VE CHOSEN SOME OF THESE STRATEGIES IS BASED ON OUR STUDENT DATA AND RESEARCH OUT THERE SHOWS THAT IF YOU HAVE A RICH TIER ONE CURRICULUM, IT'S MEETING THE NEEDS AND HELPING AROUND 80 TO 85 PERCENT OF YOUR STUDENTS MEET GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS.
WHAT WE CONSIDER TIER ONE AND LAST YEAR AT THE END OF OUR SCHOOL YEAR AND OUR DATA IN THE FALL DEMONSTRATED THAT ONLY ABOUT FORTY FOUR PERCENT OF OUR STUDENTS AT LYNNWOOD WERE ACHIEVING GRADE LEVEL STANDARD.
AND SO RATHER THAN THINKING ABOUT TIER TWO OR TIER THREE INTERVENTIONS, WE REALLY NEED TO FOCUS ON WHAT WHAT ARE ALL KIDS GETTING FIRST AND FOREMOST, WHAT IS THAT TIER ONE SO THAT EVERY KID IS GETTING HIGH QUALITY, RIGOROUS INSTRUCTION IN A UNIFIED WAY ACROSS OUR BUILDING.
WE'RE USING A NUMBER OF ASSESSMENTS TO MONITOR OUR PROGRESS FOR THIS GOAL IN ELA AS WELL AS OUR OTHER GOALS.
FIRST AND FOREMOST, OUR LITERACY ASSESSMENTS.
BUT WE ALSO HAVE BEEN WORKING TO BUILD OUR PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES IN OUR BUILDING AND HAVE BUILT OFF OF SOME OF THE DISTRICT WIDE TRAINING THAT OUR TEACHERS HAVE RECEIVED IN THE FALL, WHICH WAS AROUND CURRICULUM MAPPING NOT ONLY THEIR DAILY SCHEDULE AS A UNIFIED TEAM, BUT ALSO THEIR CONTENT AREAS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
AND SO WE'VE BEEN HAVING A REAL FOCUS AS HOW DO WE BECOME ALIGNED IN THE CONTENT THAT WE ARE DELIVERING? WE HAVE REGULAR DATA MEETINGS AND ACTION PLANNING MEETINGS AFTER OUR DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENTS ARE GIVEN THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
WE'VE BEEN COLLECTING SOME DATA AND ASSESSMENT AROUND OUR SCHEDULES AND LOOKING FOR THOSE PIECES OF OUR NEW CURRICULUM TO SEE THAT WE'RE IMPLEMENTING THEM WITH FIDELITY.
AND IN THE LAST PIECE THAT WE ARE ASSESSING IS THAT WITH ANY NEW CURRICULUM, YOU NEED TO TAKE IT A NEEDS ASSESSMENT, ESPECIALLY FOR YOUR PRACTITIONERS TO SEE WHAT SUPPORTS ARE NEEDED IN ORDER FOR OUR TEACHERS TO DELIVER THEIR BEST INSTRUCTION AND REALLY FEEL LIKE THEY THEY'RE ROCKING THIS NEW CURRICULUM.
AND SO WE'VE COLLECTED SOME FEEDBACK FROM OUR TEACHERS ABOUT WHAT THE NEEDS ARE FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND AROUND OUR RESOURCES, OUR CURRICULUM AND OUR LIBRARY SO THAT WE CAN MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE BUILDING TOWARDS EVERY CHILD HAVING ACCESS TO A JUST RIGHT FIT BOOK, NO MATTER WHAT SPACE THEY ARE IN OR WHAT GRADE LEVEL.
AND SO HERE WE ARE, NOVEMBER 23RD, AND HERE'S THE UPDATE THAT WE HAVE ON OUR PROGRESS FOR THAT SPECIFIC GOAL.
I MENTIONED JUST A MINUTE AGO THAT WE DID SOME WONDERFUL CURRICULUM MAPPING WITH OUR NEW CURRICULUM AND RESOURCES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR WITH OUR GRADE LEVEL TEAMS. WE'VE COMPLETED THAT UNITS OF STUDY, READING ASSESSMENT AND ARE NOW BEGINNING TO LAYER ON PIECES AND CHIPPING AWAY OF THE DIFFERENT FACTORS OF THIS NEW CURRICULUM AND REALLY CENTERING CONVERSATION AROUND SMALL BITES, IMPLEMENTING AND DOING WELL AND THEN PROVIDING SUPPORTS FOR TEACHERS.
THESE MAINLY SO FAR HAS HAVE CENTERED AROUND TALKING ABOUT WHAT BALANCE LITERACY LOOKS LIKE AND THE THE DIRECT INSTRUCTION PART OF OUR LITERACY LESSONS, WHICH IS THE MINI LESSON OR WHAT WE CALL THE MINI LESSON.
WE'VE BEGUN TO COLLECT SOME WALK THROUGH EVIDENCE THROUGH OBSERVATIONS AND OUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT TEAM AS TO HOW THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THESE LESSONS ARE GOING AND AND ARE IN PROCESS OF REALLY INVENTORYING, INVENTORYING AND AND PURCHASING SOME OF THOSE NEW MATERIALS TO SUPPORT THE CURRICULUM.
AND THEN LAST BUT NOT LEAST, WE TOOK SOME REAL, THOUGHTFUL AND COLLABORATIVE TIME IN DESIGNING OUR MASTER SCHEDULE TO ENSURE THAT OUR LITERACY BLOCKS WERE NOT INTERRUPTED BY RECESS OR ASSEMBLIES OR SPECIALISTS AND OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS THAT ARE OF VALUE THROUGHOUT THE DAY, BUT CAN KIND OF TRUNCATE AND CHUNK UP OUR LEARNING BLOCKS, ESPECIALLY IN ELA AND SO WE'VE DONE SOME INTENTIONAL WORK AS A TEAM AROUND OUR MASTER SCHEDULE TO ENSURE CONTINUOUS LEARNING DURING THAT PRIME TIME DURING THE DAY.
AND AND THEN SOME WORK AROUND ALREADY OUR NEW DIAGNOSTIC THAT WE'VE ADOPTED TO MAKE SURE WE KNOW HOW TO USE IT AND LEVERAGE THAT TOOL WELL FOR THE DATA THAT IT HAS AS A RESOURCE TO BEST MEET OUR KIDS WHERE THEY'RE AT.
SO WE'RE EXCITED TO TAKE NEXT STEPS TO CONTINUE LEARNING AROUND OUR NEW CURRICULUM AND BEGIN REALLY SHORING UP AND MAKING SURE THAT OUR TIER ONE STRUCTURES ARE SOLID.
AND SO I'M EXCITED TO OFFER YOU MORE FEEDBACK AND OUR SUPERINTENDENT INFORMATION
[00:15:02]
AS TO HOW THAT'S GOING AND FEEL FREE TO ALWAYS COME AND DROP IN AND SEE WHAT'S HAPPENING IN OUR CLASSROOMS BECAUSE THE WORK OF OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF IS REALLY AMAZING.ANY QUESTIONS? HI, JACQUELINE, THIS IS NANCY.
WE HAVEN'T HAD A CHANCE TO MEET IN PERSON, SO BUT I'M THRILLED TO HAVE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO GET TO HEAR ABOUT THE GREAT WORK YOU GUYS ARE DOING.
AND IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU'RE DOING SOME VERY THOUGHTFUL AND INTENTIONAL WORK.
I HAVE ONE SORT OF WONDERING THAT I HAVE.
I'M CURIOUS HOW YOU ALL CAME UP WITH THE GOAL IN TERMS. IT LOOKS LIKE OVER THE THREE YEARS OF THE PLAN THAT YOU'VE PUT IN FIVE PERCENT, YOU KNOW, EXPECTED FIVE PERCENT GROWTH IN EACH OF THE AREAS FROM WHERE YOU ARE.
AND I'M WONDERING HOW YOU GUYS CAME UP WITH THAT.
YEAH, THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION, NANCY.
I LOOK FORWARD TO MEETING YOU IN PERSON.
WHEN THINKING ABOUT OUR THREE YEAR GOAL, WE REALLY WANTED TO CONSIDER WHERE OUR STUDENTS WERE SOCIALLY, EMOTIONALLY AND OUR STAFF IN COMING BACK THROUGH HYBRID LEARNING AND IN-PERSON LEARNING AND THINKING ABOUT SOME OF THE OTHER NEEDS BEYOND THESE GOALS THAT WE'RE GOING TO NEED TO BE MET.
AND WE ALSO WANTED TO MAKE THEM ACHIEVABLE.
I HAVE BEEN THERE WHERE I'VE CREATED A SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN, WHERE WE'VE SET A BAR THAT WAS NOT REALISTIC IN TERMS OF THE GROWTH THAT WE NEEDED TO MAKE, AND SO WE REALLY WERE THOUGHTFUL ABOUT WHAT'S ACHIEVABLE AND HOW CAN WE MOVE THIS BAR IN A STEADY WAY SO THAT STUDENTS AND STAFF ARE FEELING LIKE, YES, WE ARE MAKING PROGRESS? AND SO THE RECOMMENDATION FOR US WAS TO TAKE OUR EXISTING BASELINE DATA AND OVER TWO TO THREE FIVE OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS TO REALLY SPREAD IT OUT.
HI, JACQUELINE, THIS IS ANN, ALONG THOSE LINES, I'M WONDERING YOU, I THINK YOU SAID AT THE END OF THE 2021 SCHOOL YEAR AND AT THE START OF THE 2022 SCHOOL YEAR, YOU WERE AT FORTY FOUR PERCENT FOR MEETING STANDARDS FOR THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS.
I'M WONDERING WHAT THE EFFECT OF THE PANDEMIC, REMOTE LEARNING AND EVERYTHING HAS DONE.
SO I'M WONDERING AT THE END OF THE THE LAST FULL YEAR, THE 18-19 SCHOOL YEAR, HOW MANY STUDENTS WERE ACHIEVING GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AT THAT POINT? I MEAN, BECAUSE TO ME, I THINK SOMETIMES WE'VE GOT COVID YEARS ARE GOING TO BE ODD YEARS AND I'M JUST TRYING TO SEE WHERE YOU WERE AT THE END OF WHAT WE WOULD CONSIDER IN MORE NORMAL SCHOOL YEAR.
YEAH, AND THAT'S A REALLY GOOD QUESTION.
AND SO TO BE HONEST WITH YOU, THIS IS MY THIRD YEAR AT LYNNWOOD AND MY FIRST FULL YEAR WITH THE DISTRICT WAS THE YEAR THAT WE WENT INTO CLOSURE.
AND SO I DON'T HAVE A APPLES TO APPLES COMPARISON FOR YOU.
WHAT I CAN TELL YOU IS THE YEAR PRIOR 2018-2019, WHICH WAS THE YEAR THAT CHRIS [INAUDIBLE] LEFT THIS SCHOOL AND WENT TO CEDAR WAY.
WE DO HAVE OUR SBA END OF YEAR RESULTS AND WE WERE AROUND I DON'T WANT TO GIVE YOU SPECIFICS, BUT WE WERE BETWEEN 60 AND 70 PERCENT PROFICIENCY.
AND BUT THAT WAS FOR OUR THIRD THROUGH SIXTH GRADERS.
THE OTHER PIECE THAT'S HARD TO COMPARE HERE IS THAT OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS SINCE I'VE JOINED EDMONDS, WE'VE REALLY WORKED HARD ABOUT WHAT ARE THOSE COMMON YARDSTICKS THAT WE'RE ALL USING.
AND SO MY FIRST YEAR WE DID, WE IMPLEMENTED RUNNING RECORDS, WHICH WAS A ASSESSMENT THAT WE GAVE K-6 MULTIPLE TIMES A YEAR TO REALLY START COLLECTING BEYOND OUR STATE STANDARDIZED ASSESSMENTS, WHICH ONLY SOME OF OUR STUDENTS TOOK.
HOW ARE WE MEASURING STUDENTS ELA PROFICIENCY FROM GRADE TO GRADE MULTIPLE TIMES A YEAR? AND SO IT'S TAKEN US, I WOULD SAY, TWO YEARS AMONGST THE PANDEMIC TO REALLY GET CALIBRATED AS A STAFF THROUGH PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND HOW TO IMPLEMENT THOSE RUNNING RECORDS.
AND SO WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO DO THAT AND NOW HAVE TWO YEARS DESPITE THE WHAT'S GOING ON IN OUR COMMUNITY, SOME REAL, STEADY DATA TO BE ABLE TO COMPARE.
AND WE DID SEE THAT DROP, ESPECIALLY WHEN WE STARTED MEASURING K-6 VERSUS JUST THREE SIX WITH OUR SBA SCORES.
AND THE OTHER PIECE IS THE ADOPTION OF OUR IREADY ASSESSMENT.
AND SO THAT TOO IS A NEW K-6 TOOL.
THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR THAT WE'VE IMPLEMENTED IT ACROSS THE BOARD.
LAST YEAR, IT WAS OPTIONAL AS WE ADOPTED IT.
AND SO WE'RE ABLE NOW TO TO HAVE SOME MORE STANDARDIZED DATA THAT WE CAN COMPARE
[00:20:06]
FROM YEAR TO YEAR, FROM SCHOOL TO SCHOOL GRADE LEVEL TO GRADE LEVEL TEAM.AND SO I'D SAY FROM KNOW TWENTY 2020 FROM LAST YEAR TO THIS YEAR, OUR DATA HAS BEEN PRETTY CONSISTENT FROM 2019 PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC.
WE DID SEE A DROP, BUT THOSE TOOLS THAT WE'RE USING TO MEASURE ARE DIFFERENT.
AND SO WHAT I'M REALLY EXCITED TO SEE THIS YEAR WE'VE RECEIVED OUR SBA SCORES FROM THE FALL.
OF COURSE, WE KNOW THAT THOSE ARE AND BEING SO EARLY IN THE YEAR, WE'RE GOING TO BE AN INTERESTING SET OF RESULTS FOR US, FOR OUR KIDS.
IT WILL BE GOOD INFORMATION FOR US TO COMPARE 2019 TO NOW IN THE SPRING AFTER THESE KIDS HAVE HAD, YOU KNOW, HOPEFULLY A FULL YEAR BACK AND IN SCHOOL IN SEATS WITH TEACHERS IN PERSON TO REALLY SEE WHAT MAYBE THE MAGNITUDE OF THE PANDEMIC HAS REALLY DONE TO IMPACT HOW HOW KIDS ARE PERFORMING.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THAT ANSWER.
I ENCOURAGE YOU TO CONTINUE TO COLLECT DATA BECAUSE MY CONCERN IS THAT WE THAT OUR KIDS ARE GOING TO NEED MULTI-YEARS SUPPORTS TO GET THEM UP BACK UP, EVEN MAYBE TO WHERE THEY WORK OR TO EVEN BEGIN MAKING PROGRESS ABOVE.
AND WHAT I DON'T WANT IS FOR ESPECIALLY THE LEGISLATURE OR EVEN THE PUBLIC TO MISCONSTRUE AND THINK THAT ONCE THE PANDEMIC IS QUOTE OVER, THAT EVERYTHING CAN REVERT BACK TO NORMAL.
BECAUSE I THINK OUR KIDS ARE GOING TO HAVE LASTING NEGATIVE EFFECTS THAT THAT ARE GOING TO NEED TO BE ADDRESSED THROUGH STATE RESOURCES, THROUGH INTENTIONAL PLANNING.
AND THE MORE DATA THAT WE CAN COLLECT TO SHOW THE TRAJECTORY, I THINK THE BETTER THE NARRATIVE WE WILL HAVE TO HELP OVERCOME A POTENTIAL IMPRESSION THAT WE'RE ALL DOING FINE AND WE CAN JUST GO BACK TO THE WAY IT WAS.
I THINK IT'S GOING TO TAKE A LOT LONGER THAN THAT FOR OUR KIDS TO WORK THROUGH NOT ONLY THIS, THE EFFECTS OF THIS PANDEMIC, SOCIALLY, EMOTIONALLY, BUT ALSO ACADEMICALLY.
YEAH THANK YOU ANN, I COMPLETELY AGREE, AND I THINK IT'S SO IMPORTANT TOO, WE DON'T HAVE THE YARDSTICKS FOR THE THINGS THAT KIDS HAVE LEARNED IN THE LAST TWO YEARS, THE SKILLS AND TECHNOLOGY, THE INNOVATION, BOTH OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF THAT THAT WE DIDN'T EVEN HAVE A BOX TO THINK ABOUT INSIDE OF.
AND NOW WE HAVE ALL OF THESE GREAT, GREAT THINGS THAT WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO THROUGH OUR RESILIENCE GLEAN FROM OUR STUDENTS.
AND SO, YOU KNOW, THE LEGISLATURE DOESN'T HAVE A TOOL FOR MEASURING THOSE THINGS.
AND SO IT'S OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO BE SHOWCASING AND HIGHLIGHTING AND SAYING, YES, THERE'S SOCIAL EMOTIONAL NEED.
AND YES, THERE'S STILL ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITY, BUT ALSO LOOK AT LOOK AT WHAT ELSE THEY CAN DO BECAUSE OF THIS.
I'M GOING TO GO AHEAD, AND I'M JUST CHOMPING AT THE BIT TO SEE THE STUDENTS, BUT THANK YOU SO MUCH, JACQUELINE, PRINCIPAL HENLEY.
THAT WAS REALLY INFORMATIVE AND I REALLY APPRECIATE THE THE WORK AND THE THOUGHT THAT YOU PUT INTO THIS PRESENTATION.
AND I HAVE QUESTIONS, BUT I'LL FOLLOW UP LATER WITH YOU.
NEXT, WE HAVE MR. WHITE AND HIS CLASS.
OKAY, YOU GUYS HEAR ME OK? SO STUDENTS, PLEASE GO AHEAD AND STAY MUTED, BUT PLEASE TURN YOUR VIDEOS ON SO WE CAN SEE YOU.
AND THEN IF YOU WOULDN'T MIND, CHECK THE SCREEN.
MAKE SURE WE CAN ACTUALLY SEE YOUR FACE.
I THINK I THOUGHT BLAKE EARLIER.
AND ALL RIGHT, SO I AM NOT GOING TO DO A WHOLE LOT OF TALKING.
I JUST WANTED WITH GREAT PLEASURE, INTRODUCE MY WONDERFUL STUDENT TEACHERS THIS YEAR.
JOSH IS GOING TO BE FINISHING JUST BEFORE CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR.
WE'VE GOT CHRISTINA, WHO'S JUST AS WONDERFUL, THERE SHE IS, AND SHE'S GOING TO GO WITH ME ALL YEAR LONG.
AND THE KIDS ADORE THESE TWO AND THEY'RE WONDERFUL PEOPLE.
SO I'M GOING TO LET CHRISTINA GO FIRST.
CHRISTINA SELECTED OUR FOUR READERS.
I'LL LET CHRISTINA TALK, GO AHEAD CHRISTINA.
SO I WE SELECTED FIVE STUDENTS TODAY, FOUR OF THEM WILL BE READING THEIR ESSAYS WITH US AND ALL OF THE STUDENTS THAT WE CHOSE THEY HAVE A WIDE VARIETY OF ABILITIES AND WE CHOSE THEM BASED ON THEIR GREAT DESIRE
[00:25:03]
TO SHARE THE ESSAYS.THEY'RE VERY EXCITED TO DO THAT.
THEY ALL HAD EXCELLENT ESSAYS, BUT AND WE WISH THAT WE COULD SHARE ALL OF IT WITH YOU.
BUT DUE TO TIME, WE DECIDED TO CHOOSE JUST ONE PARAGRAPH FROM EACH OF THEIR ESSAYS TO SHARE WITH EVERYONE TODAY.
CAN GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE? COULD I GO ONE MORE SLIDE? SO FOR THE ESSAYS, THEY WERE GIVEN A CHANCE TO WRITE ABOUT SOMETHING THAT THEY'RE PASSIONATE ABOUT.
AND THE FIRST THING THAT WE DID, NEXT SLIDE, COULD I GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE? THANK YOU, THEY WERE CAME UP WITH A THESIS STATEMENT AND WHAT THE THESIS STATEMENT? THEY CAME UP WITH AN OUTLINE WITH THE IN THE OUTLINE.
THEY HAVE THREE REASONS THAT THEY CAME UP WITH, WITH THREE PIECES OF EVIDENCE IN EACH REASON AND WITH THEIR ESSAY OUTLINE THAT THEY FOUND THEY WERE FINALLY ABLE TO WRITE AN ESSAY BY ADDING A INTRO AND CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH.
AND THEY'VE BEEN WORKING ON THAT FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS.
SO THE FIRST STUDENT THAT I WANTED TO INTRODUCE TO EVERYONE TODAY IS TIN.
HE'LL BE READING A PART OF ITS MAIN PARAGRAPH WHERE HE WROTE ABOUT HIS LOVE FOR HIKING.
CAN I GET ONE MORE SLIDE, PLEASE? THANK YOU.
AND TIN, COULD YOU UNMUTE YOURSELF AND YOU CAN READ WHENEVER YOU ARE READY? DO YOU ENJOY HIKING? DO YOU ENJOY THE OUTDOORS? DO YOU ENJOY THE OUTDOORS AND SEEING ANIMALS? I DO.
I GO TO DIFFERENT PLACES IN WASHINGTON LIKE I GO TO DIFFERENT PLACES IN WASHINGTON LIKE MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK AND BAKER NATIONAL FOREST.
I ENJOY HIKING BECAUSE YOU CAN EXPLORE DIFFERENT PLACES.
FOR ME, I EXPLORE, I EXPLORE PLACES LIKE MOUNT RAINIER AND MOUNT BAKER.
YOU CAN ENJOY THE PLACE AS MUCH AS I DID WHEN I WAS THERE.
WHEN YOU VISIT DIFFERENT PLACES, YOU CAN REMIND YOURSELF ABOUT THAT MEMORY BY TAKING PICTURES.
SOMETIMES WHEN YOU VISIT NEW PLACES, YOU CAN DO FUN ACTIVITIES LIKE SWIMMING IN A RIVER OR ROCK CLIMBING.
SO NEXT, WE HAVE BLAKE, HE WROTE ABOUT WHY THE NISSAN GTR IS THE BEST CAR IN THE WORLD.
BLAKE, COULD YOU UNMUTE YOURSELF? YES, THANK YOU.
THE NISSAN GTR, R35 IS THE BEST CAR IN THE WORLD BECAUSE YOU CAN CUSTOMIZE IT.
FIFTEEN PEOPLE PUT A WIDE BODY KIT ON THEIR GTR.
SOME PEOPLE CAN EVEN CHANGE THEIR GTR WHEELS AND RIMS. ONE TIME I SAW A GTR THAT HAD DIFFERENT ROOMS AND THE SIMPLE STOCK ROOMS. ALL FOUR WHEELS HAD CUSTOMIZED RIMS. I THOUGHT THEY WERE AMAZING.
YOU CAN ALSO CUSTOMIZE, CUSTOMIZE IT BY PAINTING THE CAR.
IF I HAD A GTR, I'D WANT TO CUSTOMIZE MY CAR BY PAINTING IT MATTE BLACK.
SHE WROTE HER ESSAY ABOUT HER SISTER AND WHY SHE'S THE FUNNIEST PERSON THAT SHE KNOWS.
AMINA, COULD YOU PLEASE UNMUTE YOURSELF? MY SISTER'S FUNNY BECAUSE SHE COMES UP WITH FUNNY DANCES.
ONE DAY AT MY DAYCARE, MY SISTER WAS DOING A FUNNY DANCE AND I WAS DOING A FUNNY DANCE AND I LAUGHED.
THE ONLY PROBLEM WAS I WAS EATING CHIPS AT THE SAME TIME.
SHE MADE ME LAUGH SO HARD, I STARTED CHOKING.
ONE OF THE TEACHERS CAME OUT AND PATTED ME ON THE BACK SO I WOULD STOP CHOKING.
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, WE HAVE OUR LAST STUDENT READING HIS ESSAY.
HE'LL BE READING HIS INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH ABOUT WHY PEOPLE SHOULD STOP SWEARING.
ULYSSES COULD YOU PLEASE UNMUTE YOURSELF? ULYSSES ARE YOU STILL THERE? RIGHT.
EIGHT, BLAKE, CAN I GET YOU TO READ ULYSSES THIS PARAGRAPH, PLEASE, WHILE WE'RE WAITING FOR HIM? YEP.
DO YOU WANT TO SEND IT? DO YOU WANT TO SEND YOUR KIDS ON TO A SCHOOL BUS AND HAVE THEM HEAR SWEAR WORDS? I DON'T THINK SO.
I THINK PEOPLE SHOULD STOP SWEARING ON THE BUS.
YOU SHOULD REALLY PAY ATTENTION TO THIS ESSAY.
[00:30:02]
SO WE CAN SEE WE'VE GOT A LITTLE ISSUE ABOUT LANGUAGE IN THE SCHOOL BUS.THANK YOU, KIDS, AND THANK YOU, MS. KIM, FOR INTRODUCING THEM.
AND I'LL TURN IT OVER TO MR. SWIDLER.
GOOD EVENING, EVERYBODY, SO MY NAME IS JOSH SWIDLER, I'M A FOURTH GRADE TC AT LYNNWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND I AM HERE TO INTRODUCE ONE OF MY AMAZING STUDENTS WHOSE NAME IS OLIVIA, WHO MIGHT BE HAVING SOME PROBLEMS WITH HER CAMERA.
SO LET'S JUST BE GRACIOUS AND ADAPT, AND SHE'LL BE TELLING EVERYONE ABOUT A REALLY SPECIAL ART PROJECT WE COMPLETED IN EARLY NOVEMBER.
ALSO, AT THIS TIME, I WOULD LIKE TO INVITE THE HOST TO CYCLE THROUGH EACH SLIDE OF OUR ARTWORK.
MAYBE THREE OR FOUR SECONDS EACH THREE SECONDS MIGHT BE MORE APPROPRIATE, AND I'LL TURN OVER TO OLIVIA, WHO IS GOING TO INTRODUCE OUR ESSAY SO OLIVIA CAN GO AHEAD AND UNMUTE AND LET US LET US KNOW.
OLIVIA, CAN YOU PERHAPS UNMUTE YOURSELF, PLEASE? ALL RIGHT.
AMINA, ARE YOU STILL THERE? WANT TO READ FOR US INSTEAD? OH, SURE.
THIS WAS OUR SECOND ART PROJECT OF THE YEAR AND OUR FIRST PROJECT.
SEEING, OLIVIA, DID YOU COME BACK? WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO CONTINUE? SORRY, YOU GUYS.
OLIVIA ARE YOU STILL THERE? BUT YEP, I'M RIGHT HERE, OLIVIA, WE CAN'T SEE, BUT GO AHEAD AND READ, OK.
GOOD EVENING SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS, FELLOW TEACHERS, STAFF, STUDENTS AND PARENTS.
I'M IN THE FOURTH GRADE AT LYNNWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
THIS WAS OUR SECOND ART PROJECT OF THE YEAR AND OUR FIRST PROJECT WE STUDIED PRIMARY AND SECONDARY COLORS.
WE APPLIED THAT SKILL TO THIS PROJECT.
OUR PROJECT WAS TO CREATE A COLORFUL AND CREATIVE PAINTING OF A TOUCAN.
WE STARTED BY SKETCHING A BEAK, BODY AND THEN A LUSH BACKGROUND.
AFTER THIS, WE DREW OVER OUR OUTLINE WITH SHARPIE.
THE FINAL STEP WAS TO USE AN ARRAY OF AMAZINGLY VIBRANT TEMPERA PINK COLORS TO COMPLETE THE TWO CONVENINGS.
WE WOULD BE PROUD TO DISPLAY OUTSIDE OF OUR CLASSROOM.
IF YOU ARE EVER ON THE SECOND FLOOR, COME AND CHECK OUT ROOM 261.
CHERYL, COULD WE HAVE GALLERY VIEW, PLEASE? I WANT TO CLOSE BY SAYING THANKS SO MUCH TO THE STUDENTS, ESPECIALLY THANKS
[00:35:20]
TO OUR STUDENT TEACHERS HERE AND SCHOOL BOARD.I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT I'M DOING EVERYTHING I CAN TO PREPARE FOR THE PREPARE THESE TWO TO WORK IN THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT.
WE WANT TO HANG ON TO THESE TWO AND HOPEFULLY LYNNWOOD ELEMENTARY, SO.
ALL RIGHT, THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE.
YEAH, SHE'LL BE BACK ON, I THINK PRESIDENT KILGORE IS OFF SCREEN RIGHT NOW.
DIRECTOR KATIMS, CAN YOU TAKE OVER THE MEETING? UP NEXT IS THE SUPERINTENDENT REPORT.
[7. SUPERINTENDENT REPORT-7:00 pm]
SURE SO DR.BALDERAS, WOULD YOU GO AHEAD AND GIVE US THE SUPERINTENDENT REPORT? YES, MA'AM.
THERE'S A FEW ITEMS ON THE AGENDA AND I'D LIKE TO SPEAK TO UP FRONT A LITTLE BIT.
ONE IS HOUSING HOPE, AND THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WE'VE BEEN WORKING WITH THE CITY OF LYNNWOOD AND HOUSING HOPE WITH REGARDS TO HAVING AN OPPORTUNITY TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL HOUSING FOR OUR STUDENTS AND OUR FAMILIES.
SO I THINK THERE'S MAYBE SOME MISCONCEPTIONS OUT THERE IN OUR COMMUNITY IN TERMS OF WHAT THIS IS AND WHAT THIS ISN'T.
SO I WANT TO MAKE SURE THERE'S CLARITY IN TERMS OF WHAT THIS PROJECT WILL BE IN THE FUTURE.
AND THIS REALLY IS WE HAVE A HOUSING OUR KIDS AND THEIR FAMILIES.
WE HAVE ROUGHLY THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY STUDENTS THAT QUALIFY FOR MCKINNEY MENTAL SERVICES, AND THOSE ARE SERVICES FOR STUDENTS THAT ARE UNHOUSED.
SO WE HAVE ROUGHLY THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY KIDS IN THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT THAT ARE CONSIDERED UNHOUSED RIGHT NOW.
SO I MEAN, THEY ARE DOUBLED UP OR THEY'RE HOMELESS.
SO THIS IS SOMETHING THAT'S A PARTICULAR CONCERN.
I THINK WE REALLY UNDER IDENTIFY THESE KIDS.
VERGARA AND THE TEAM ARE REALLY WORKING HARD TO CONTINUE TO IDENTIFY MORE AND MORE KIDS.
I THINK WE SHOULD BE CLOSE TO HER TO DOUBLE THAT IF WE TRULY IDENTIFY ALL KIDS THAT ARE IN A HOUSE COMPARABLE TO EVERETT.
SO THIS WILL MAKE A SMALL DENT WHEN WE TRULY COMPLETE THIS TO HELP SUPPORT OUR FAMILIES AND OUR STUDENTS.
THIS IS HOUSING FOR OUR EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES, SO I WANT TO MAKE SURE THERE'S CLARITY TO THAT.
I ALSO WANT TO ENSURE THAT I THINK THE BOARD AND STAFF THAT HELPED FACILITATE THAT SOME SUPPORT AND OUR VACCINATION CLINIC AT MIDDLE LEVEL HIGH SCHOOL, I KNOW WE HAD A FEW BOARD MEMBERS THERE.
SO AND THEN WE THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WE'RE VERY, VERY HAPPY TO BE ABLE TO PROVIDE THIS SERVICE.
WE WERE ABLE TO PROVIDE A THOUSAND VACCINATIONS THIS PAST SUNDAY AND THEY'LL BE FOLLOW UP CLINICS.
AND WE'RE WORKING REALLY HARD WITH WITH OUR PARTNERS TRYING TO IDENTIFY MORE AND MORE ACCESS TO THE VACCINE SO WE CAN GET OUR SHOTS IN ARMS TO OUR OVER 11000 KIDS IN THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT THAT ARE AGES FIVE TO 11.
SO IT'S GOING TO TAKE SOME TIME BUT REALLY APPRECIATE THE EFFORT BY ALL THE VOLUNTEERS THAT DO GIVE UP THEIR TIME ON SUNDAYS TO BE ABLE TO DO THIS FOR A FULL DAY AFFAIR.
SO AND APPRECIATE THE BOARD THOSE WHO CAN MAKE IT TO BE ABLE TO PROVIDE THAT SUPPORT AS WELL.
ALSO TONIGHT THERE'S A SECOND READING OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN AND WANT TO MAKE THIS WILL BE MY WAS COUNTING THE OTHER DAY.
I THINK THIS IS MY EIGHTH STRATEGIC PLAN THAT I'VE HELPED DEVELOP WITH THE WITH THE COMMUNITY, WITH THE DISTRICT.
SO THIS IS A REALLY HIGH LEVEL PLAN.
SO IT'S TRULY IS A WORK IN PROGRESS.
THE NO THE DEVIL'S IN THE DETAILS OF BOARD WILL APPROVE THIS HIGH LEVEL PLAN AND THERE ARE SOME ELEMENTS IN THIS PLAN.
[00:40:01]
AGAIN, EVERY STRATEGIC PLAN SHOULD BE DRAFT SHOULD BE DOG-EARED.IT SHOULD BE REVISED AS NEEDED.
SO I KNOW THERE ARE SOME QUESTIONS I THINK THEY'LL ASK ME REGARDING SPECIFICS LANGUAGE AND THAT LANGUAGE WILL BE BROUGHT FORWARD TO THE BOARD ONCE THE BOARD APPROVES THIS PLAN AND HAVE ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE THAT SPEAKS TO MORE PROCESS PROCEDURE.
THERE NEEDS TO BE A STRATEGIC PLAN ELEMENT AND ACTION PLAN DEVELOPED FOR DUAL LANGUAGE, BUT ALSO FOR, FOR EXAMPLE, UNIVERSAL DESIGN, UNIVERSAL DESIGN.
UDL WILL BE PART OF THAT AS WELL IN TERMS OF OTHER PATHWAYS.
I KNOW THE BOARD'S TALKED ABOUT CHOICE PROGRAMS THERE.
THERE WILL BE AN ACTION PLAN DEVELOPED FOR THAT AS WELL.
SO THE BOARD'S APPROVING A VERY HIGH LEVEL STRATEGIC PLAN AND THE DEVIL WILL BE IN THE DETAILS AT THE BOARD IF STAFF WILL WORK THROUGH IN TERMS OF YEAR ONE, TWO AND THREE PRIORITIES.
SO TONIGHT I KNOW THAT THE STAFF AND BOARD HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH COMMUNITY FOR SOME TIME.
I KNOW THERE WAS A PAUSE BECAUSE OF COVID, BUT THERE WILL BE MORE, A LOT MORE ENGAGEMENT WITH SCHOOL STAFF IN TERMS OF WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE AND FEELS LIKE FOR THE NEXT FEW YEARS.
SO THIS IS OUR FIRST ATTEMPT TO GET THIS APPROVED ONCE IT'S APPROVED, WE'LL COME BACK WITH YOUR ONE, TWO AND THREE SOME RECOMMENDATIONS THAT ARE DOABLE THAT ARE HIGHEST PRIORITY FOR THE BOARD, BUT ALSO ALL THE MICRO PLANS THAT WILL GO UNDERNEATH THIS.
SO IN THE END, IT BECOMES A PRETTY FORMIDABLE DOCUMENT IN TERMS OF ALL THE ACTION PLANS UNDERNEATH THE STRATEGIC THE BROADER STRATEGIC PLAN.
I LOOK FORWARD TO THAT WORK BECAUSE THAT IS THE WORK THAT IS ESSENTIAL FOR OUR SYSTEM TO TO MOVE FORWARD.
AND I LOOK FORWARD TO THE WORK AHEAD FROM OUR CONTINUED EFFORTS IN OUR ETHNIC STUDIES, PROGRAMING TO OUR LANGUAGE PROGRAMING FOR OTHER ELEMENTS SUCH AS MULTI-TIERED SYSTEMS OF SUPPORT.
AND WE USE A LOT OF ACRONYMS, AS WE STATED LAST WEEK.
MULTI-TIERED SYSTEM OF SUPPORT IS REALLY JUST TRULY MEANING KIDS WHERE THEY'RE AT ACADEMICALLY AND BEHAVIORALLY.
AND THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE'LL CONTINUE TO FRAME UP THAT SYSTEM AS WELL.
JUST WISH ALL STAFF, STUDENTS AND FAMILIES RELAXING A FEW DAYS COMING FORWARD.
THAT'S THE OFFICIAL TERM, SO THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS.
I KNOW WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO VISIT A LOT OF SCHOOLS AND I KNOW KIDS ARE ANXIOUS TO HAVE A FEW DAYS OFF AS WELL AS STAFF SO AND ALSO BOARD REALLY WISHING YOU A RESTFUL AND THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY, SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
I'M BACK, SO I APOLOGIZE MY MODEM CUT OUT FOR SOME REASON.
SO NEXT, WE'RE ON TO APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES FOR THE NOVEMBER 9TH 2021 STUDY

ANY ABSTENTIONS? THE MOTION, THE MOTION PASSES AND THE CONSENT AGENDA IS APPROVED.
[10. PUBLIC COMMENTS-7:10 pm]
AT NEXT, WE HAVE PUBLIC COMMENTS.I ONLY HAVE A COUPLE OF PEOPLE HERE TODAY TO MAKE COMMENTS, OUR FIRST SPEAKER IS HEATHER QUENTINS.
PUBLIC COMMENT IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU TO FOR THE PUBLIC TO SPEAK TO THE BOARD AND YOU'LL HAVE THREE MINUTES.
DEBORAH THANKS FOR THANKS FOR THE TIME TO SPEAK ABOUT THIS IMPORTANT TOPIC AFFECTING STUDENTS LEARNING ACCESS.
WE KNOW HOW IMPORTANT THAT IS AND HOW THE PANDEMIC HAS AFFECTED THAT, BUT THIS CONTINUES TO HAPPEN FOR ONLY A CERTAIN GROUP OF STUDENTS AT SCHOOL.
THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT'S CURRENT POLICIES ON THE CLOSE CONTACT QUARANTINE ARE TREATING HEALTHY, HEALTHY CHILDREN DIFFERENTLY BASED ON THEIR QUOTE UNQUOTE VAX STATUS.
THESE POLICIES ARE HARMFUL TO HEALTHY CHILDREN IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND THEY'RE PREVENTING THEM FROM A FULL AND EQUAL IN-PERSON LEARNING ENVIRONMENT.
THEY'RE DIRECTLY CONTRIBUTING TO DISCRIMINATION OF THESE STUDENTS BASED ON THEIR HEALTH STATUS, WHICH COULD BE BASED ON THE RELIGIOUS BELIEFS.
THE FACT THAT THEY MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE THE VACCINE BECAUSE OF THEIR HEALTH NEEDS OR THEY HAVE PRIOR IMMUNITY.
THE WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT STATE OF HEALTH HAS RECENTLY IN OCTOBER OUTLINED A TEST TO STATE OPTION WHICH WOULD ELIMINATE TIME AWAY FROM SCHOOL FOR A CLOSE CONTACT OF A COVID POSITIVE PERSON.
THIS WOULD ELIMINATE THE FORCED 10 DAY STAY AT HOME CURRENT POLICY FOR COMPLETELY HEALTHY KIDS WITH NO OPTION TO TEST BACK IN.
CURRENTLY, IF YOU'RE EXPOSED AND UNVACCINATED, YOU DON'T HAVE A TEST TO STAY OPTION.
PRIOR DISCUSSION INDICATED THAT YOU DON'T HAVE WE TALKED ABOUT OR SOME OF THE MEMBERS TALKED ABOUT REMOTE LEARNING AND HOW THAT WAS ENFORCED.
THAT IS NOT EVEN AN OPTION IF YOU'RE FORCED TO STAY HOME FOR 10 DAYS WITH NO ACCESS TO INSTRUCTION.
YOU DON'T GET ANY LEARNING YOU'RE TREATED AS A SICK CHILD AS IF YOU WERE IN BED THE ENTIRE TIME.
IT'S NOT FAIR TO THE KIDS, IT'S DISCRIMINATORY.
IT MAKES THEM FEEL BAD, AND IT MAKES THEM FEEL DIFFERENT THAN OTHER KIDS.
AND I DON'T THINK THAT'S THE THING THAT EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT WANTS TO KEEP PROMOTING.
ON THE OTHER HAND, A VACCINATED CHILD WHO GOT EXPOSED IN A SIMILAR ENVIRONMENT COULD EQUALLY TRANSMIT THIS VIRUS, BUT THEY'RE NOT TREATED THE SAME WAY.
BASED ON THE SCIENCE AND ALL THE EVIDENCE THAT'S OUT THERE AT THIS TIME AND THE FACT THAT THE STATE HAS ALLOWED THIS TYPE OF POLICY WITH THE MITIGATION OF MASKING, I DON'T SEE WHY EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT CANNOT IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE LOCAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT INSTITUTE THIS AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.
IT HAS BEEN ADOPTED BY OTHER SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND IT WILL ELIMINATE LOST TIME FOR STUDENTS AND PROTECT OTHERS WHO DO FEAR EXPOSURE.
THERE'S BEEN MANY STUDIES OUT THERE ON THE CDC.
DR. FAUCI JUST RECENTLY REITERATED THE FACT THAT THESE VACCINES ARE WHAT'S CALLED, QUOTE UNQUOTE LEAKY.
WE KNOW THAT THERE'S TRANSMISSION.
THERE'S BEEN MULTIPLE STUDIES TO BE HAPPY TO SEND THOSE TO YOU AS WELL.
ADDITIONALLY, VIRAL LOADS ARE THE SAME, AND AGAIN, THERE HAVE BEEN STUDIES AND FREQUENTLY OUT THERE MORE AND MORE ABOUT THAT BETWEEN PEOPLE.
I HOPE THAT YOU DO TAKE THESE FACTS INTO CONSIDERATION AND LOOK AT THIS EQUALLY FOR STUDENTS THAT THERE IS A MITIGATION STRATEGY.
IT WOULD ALLOW THEM TO BE IN SCHOOL.
TO BE LEARNING WOULD REDUCE ANY POSSIBILITY OF TRANSMISSION WITH THE FACT THAT THEY ARE GOING TO BE TESTED AND IT WOULD KEEP KIDS IN SCHOOL AND TREAT THEM EQUALLY.
GOOD EVENING, I'M JAN CHANG, FIRST GRADE TEACHER AT WEST GATE ELEMENTARY AND ONE OF THE NINE TO 10 PERCENT OF EDUCATORS OF COLOR IN THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT.
I WOULD LIKE TO EXPRESS SOME CONCERNS ABOUT THE STRATEGIC PLAN AS A MEMBER OF THE EDMONDS EDUCATOR OF COLOR NETWORK AND AS THE EDUCATOR OF COLOR REPRESENTATIVE OF THE EDMONDS EDUCATION ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE BOARD.
MY CONCERNS ARE ALSO THOSE OF MANY EDUCATORS OF COLOR IN THE DISTRICT.
IT IS NOT EASY TO SPEAK OUT ABOUT THESE CONCERNS TO YOU AND IN PUBLIC, BUT I BELIEVE
[00:50:03]
IT IS NECESSARY TO DO SO.THE STRATEGIC PLAN HAS THE ADMIRABLE GOAL OF SUPPORTING STUDENTS TO FEEL A SENSE OF BELONGING, ALONG WITH CULTURALLY AND LINGUISTICALLY AFFIRMING CURRICULA AND INSTRUCTION.
HOWEVER, THERE IS NO SUCH MENTION OF THIS GOAL WITH REGARD TO PROVIDING STAFF OF COLOR WITH A SENSE OF BELONGING AND AFFIRMING THEIR CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC KNOWLEDGE, EXPERTIZE AND BACKGROUNDS.
IN THE PAST, STAFF OF COLOR HAVE RARELY BEEN SPECIFICALLY INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROCESS OF REVIEWING AND ADOPTING DISTRICT CURRICULUM AND MATERIALS, ESPECIALLY WITH REGARD TO EVALUATING THEM FOR CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE INSTRUCTION AND PRACTICES.
WE HAVE FREQUENTLY BEEN PUT IN UNCOMFORTABLE AND UNSAFE POSITIONS IN RELATION TO OTHER STAFF DURING EQUITY TRAININGS AND OTHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, BOTH AT THE DISTRICT AND BUILDING LEVELS.
DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION AND STAFF RESPONSE TO OUR FEEDBACK HAS OFTEN BEEN DEFENSIVE OR DISMISSIVE.
TO DATE, DESPITE OUR MANY YEARS OF REQUEST, A CONSISTENT DISTRICT WIDE PROTOCOL FOR RACIAL OR RACIST INCIDENTS AND LANGUAGE HAS NOT BEEN PUT INTO PLACE TO PROTECT OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF OF COLOR.
NOR HAS A SUPPORTIVE DISTRICT MENTORING PROGRAM BEEN IMPLEMENTED TO HELP OUR CURRENT EDUCATOR OF COLOR STAFF.
THE STRATEGIC PLAN FOCUSES ONLY ON RECRUITING AND RETAINING NEW EDUCATORS OF COLOR, NOT ON SUPPORTING EDUCATORS OF COLOR ALREADY WORKING IN THE DISTRICT.
IF THE DISTRICT IS NOT PROMOTING A SENSE OF BELONGING FOR ITS STAFF OF COLOR WHO CONTINUE WORKING IN THE DISTRICT DESPITE REGULARLY FEELING ISOLATED OR UNACKNOWLEDGED, HOW CAN OUR STUDENTS AND COMMUNITIES OF COLOR BE SUPPORTED AND FEELING A SENSE OF BELONGING AS WELL? THIS, ESPECIALLY SINCE WE STAFF OF COLOR, COMPRISE SUCH A SMALL PROPORTION OF THE CURRENT STAFF WORKING IN A DISTRICT.
OUR VOICES ARE ALREADY MUTED, PERHAPS SUPPRESSED.
THE STRATEGIC PLAN SHOULD INTENTIONALLY ADDRESS THIS LONGSTANDING PROBLEM THROUGH SPECIFIC LANGUAGE AND ACTIONS IN ORDER TO MEET ITS GOALS FOR ALL STAKEHOLDERS.
WE WANT TO DO OUR BEST FOR OUR STUDENTS, JUST AS THE DISTRICT DOES.
WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO KNOW THAT THEY MATTER, BUT WE ALSO NEED TO FEEL THAT WE MATTER, IF POSSIBLE.
AN OPPORTUNITY TO DISCUSS THESE ISSUES BEFORE OR EVEN AFTER THE BOARD MAKES A DECISION ABOUT THE STRATEGIC PLAN WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION AND TIME.
AND THAT IS THOSE ARE ALL THE PUBLIC COMMENTS WE HAVE FOR
[11. REPORTS-7:45 pm]
TONIGHT.UP NEXT, WE HAVE OUR STATUS UPDATE, OUR REPORTS, AND OUR FIRST ONE IS OUR STATUS UPDATE.
I KNEW CHERELLE WAS TRYING TO GET OUR POWERPOINT UP RIGHT NOW.
SO TONIGHT WE AGAIN APPRECIATE STAFF WORKING ON THESE ON THESE STATUS UPDATES THAT PROVIDE OUR SCHOOL BOARD AND COMMUNITY JUST REALLY JUST AN UNDERSTANDING OF WHERE WE'RE AT RIGHT NOW AS A SCHOOL DISTRICT OVERALL, NOT JUST WITH THE COVID VACCINE, BUT OTHER EFFORTS.
I'M DOING THIS ONE TURN OVER TO DANA ON THIS ONE.
QUICK UPDATE ON SNOHOMISH COUNTY HEALTH DISTRICT.
AROUND THE AROUND THE COUNTY, HERE ARE THE CASE REPORTS.
WE ARE UP A LITTLE BIT ON OUR CASE COUNT OVER THE LAST TWO WEEKS.
AS YOU KNOW, IT WAS UP TO THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY TWO PER HUNDRED THOUSAND.
A POSITIVITY RATE IS UP JUST A LITTLE BIT AS WELL.
FIVE TO 11 YEAR OLDS, SIXTEEN POINT FIVE PERCENT HAVE RECEIVED THEIR FIRST DOSE.
AND I KNOW DR. BALDERAS ALLUDED TO THIS EARLIER, BUT THAT IS A TOTAL IN THE TOTAL, AND THE COUNTY IS TWELVE THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED DOSES.
THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH EVERETT SCHOOL DISTRICT, DELIVERED OVER THE LAST TWO WEEKS THREE THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED OF THOSE DOSES.
SO TWENTY EIGHT PERCENT OF THE WHOLE COUNTY'S DOSES FOR FIVE TO 11 YEAR OLDS WERE DELIVERED BY OUR TWO SCHOOL DISTRICTS, AND OUR INCREDIBLE PARTNERSHIP WITH SEATTLE IS THE NURSES ASSOCIATION.
AND THEN 20 PERCENT OF SNOHOMISH COUNTY RESIDENTS THAT ARE OVER 18, SO ADULTS HAVE HAD THEIR THIRD DOSE, THEIR BOOSTER SHOT.
AND THEN IN THE PAST TWO WEEKS, THIS IS KIND OF THE STATUS IN THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT.
WE HAVE DELIVERED FIVE HUNDRED AND FIFTY PCR TESTS ON OUR DISTRICT SITES, WITH
[00:55:01]
AN AVERAGE OF SIXTY ONE TESTS A DAY ON SCHOOL DAYS.THE POSITIVITY RATE OF THOSE TESTS IS THREE PERCENT, SO THAT IS MUCH LOWER THAN THE COUNTY RATE.
WE ALSO HAVE PEOPLE WHO TEST SOMETIMES IF THEY'VE IF THEY ARE VACCINATED AND THERE ARE CLOSE CONTACT, JUST KIND OF MONITORING THOSE KIND OF THINGS.
SO IT'S NICE TO HAVE AN ACCESS POINT FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF.
WE'VE HAD SEVENTY ONE POSITIVE COVID CASES IN THE DISTRICT OVER THE PAST TWO WEEKS, THREE CLASSROOM CLOSURES, FIVE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY FOUR CLOSE CONTACTS, AS DETERMINED BY THE METRICS THAT ARE GIVEN TO US BY THE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT AND TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY FOUR STUDENTS QUARANTINED, WHICH ARE ABOUT FORTY THREE PERCENT OF ALL THE CLOSE CONTACTS.
AND THEN ON THE BOTTOM DOWN THERE IN THE THE GRAPHIC IS OUR TESTING THAT WE'RE DOING AND IT'S BY ZIP CODE IN OUR IN OUR DISTRICT.
SO WHICH PARTS OF OUR DISTRICT ARE GETTING TESTED AND SOME OF IT ARE OTHERS BECAUSE WE DO HAVE SOME OUT OF DISTRICT STUDENTS AND STAFF AS WELL.
BALDERAS TALKED ABOUT A LITTLE BIT AT THE BEGINNING, WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO HOST TWO CLINICS IN THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND HERE ARE SOME FUN PICTURES OF SOME PEOPLE YOU MIGHT RECOGNIZE ON YOUR SCREEN.
SO WE'VE HAD INCREDIBLE VOLUNTEERS COME OUT.
BALDERAS, A NUMBER OF CABINET MEMBERS, A NUMBER OF TEACHERS AND CLASSIFIED STAFF MEMBERS, AND OP'S AND ADMIN ASSISTANTS.
AND JUST JUST EVERYONE HAS BEEN REPRESENTED.
AND THESE ARE ALL JUST PEOPLE VOLUNTEERING THEIR TIME FOR THE COMMON GOOD AND TO GET THESE VACCINES OUT.
AGAIN, WE HAVE POSTED ON SITE CLINICS ON NOVEMBER 14TH AND THAT WAS SEVEN HUNDRED VACCINATIONS THAT WE DELIVERED.
AND THEN THIS LAST SUNDAY, WE DELIVERED A THOUSAND AND THEY WERE ALL IN MENDOTA HIGH SCHOOL, AND WE'VE GOT SOME VERY DECENT DRIVE THRU CLINICS FOR OUR OLDER STUDENTS AND FOR OUR ADULTS.
THESE CLINICS WERE WALK IN, SO IT'S A LITTLE DIFFERENT DOING A WALK IN CLINIC, OF COURSE, DURING A PANDEMIC.
SO JUST MOVING PEOPLE THROUGH GETTING THEM THROUGH AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.
BUT THERE IS AN OBSERVATION PERIOD AT THE END AND I JUST WANT TO THANK ALL OF OUR VOLUNTEERS.
THEY HAVE BEEN ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE.
THERE'S ONE PICTURE THERE OF AS KIDS ARE LEAVING AND LITERALLY THAT PERSON, I THINK, DANCED FOR THREE AND A HALF HOURS CELEBRATING KIDS AS THEY LEFT THE BUILDING AND JUST ENCOURAGED AND ALL OF THOSE THINGS.
SO WE'RE SUPER GRATEFUL FOR THOSE VOLUNTEERS.
SO SEVENTEEN HUNDRED STUDENTS RECEIVED THEIR FIRST DOSE WITH DOSE IN THE EDMONDS ON OUR DISTRICT PROPERTY.
THOSE COULD HAVE BEEN STUDENTS FROM MUKILTEO, EVERETT OR EDMONDS, OR MAYBE SOME OTHER SURROUNDING DISTRICTS, BUT WE WERE ABLE TO DO THAT ON SITE.
WE REALLY APPRECIATE OUR ONGOING PARTNERSHIP WITH SEATTLE VISITING NURSES ASSOCIATION, WHO HAS HELPED US.
THEY PROVIDE ALL THE NURSES FOR THESE CLINICS, AND THEY'VE ALSO WERE THE ONES WHO SECURED THE DOSES FOR US A LONG TIME AGO.
THEY PUT IN THE ORDERS FOR THESE DOSES AND THEN WE'RE COLLABORATING AND WORKING WITH EVERETT AND MUKILTEO SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO GET THE MESSAGING OUT SO PEOPLE CAN SIGN UP FOR THESE AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE MORE OF THESE.
WE HAVE SECOND DOSES ALREADY SCHEDULED, SO WHEN PEOPLE REGISTER FOR THEIR FIRST DOSE, THEY ALSO GOT THE SCHEDULE FOR THEIR SECOND DOSE.
SO WE HAVE TWO OTHER CLINICS COMING UP ON DECEMBER 5TH AND DECEMBER 12TH WILL ON DECEMBER 5TH WE'LL DO THE OTHER SEVEN HUNDRED DOSES OF THAT FIRST CLINIC AND THEN ON DECEMBER 12TH, WE WILL DO THE SECOND DOSE OF THE THOUSAND.
AND THEN AGAIN, WE COULDN'T DO WITHOUT ALL OUR VOLUNTEERS, AND WE JUST REALLY APPRECIATE EVERYONE WHO WHO CAME AND SUPPORTED OUR KIDS AND FAMILIES.
AND I WOULD BE REMISS NOT TO THANK [INAUDIBLE] SHE HAS PUT IN AN INORDINATE AMOUNT OF WORK ORGANIZING AND JUST MAKING SURE THIS RUNS JUST AS SMOOTH AS COULD POSSIBLY RUN, AND IT'S LOTS OF PREP MEETINGS TO MAKE SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPEN SO EFFICIENTLY.
WE'VE BEEN TOLD BY SEATTLE VISITING NURSES HOW MUCH THEY APPRECIATE JUST THE EFFICIENCY THAT WE PROVIDE, AND SO I WANT TO GIVE A HUGE SHOUT OUT TO HER BECAUSE SHE HAS JUST BEEN SO FORWARD THINKING DURING THIS WHOLE PANDEMIC, AND WE REALLY APPRECIATE HER DOING EVERYTHING SHE CAN TO GET ALL OF OUR KIDS ACCESS THAT WANT TO.
WE'LL CONTINUE TO WORK ON THIS AND WE'RE IN A PARTNERSHIP ALSO WITH THE LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENTS AND FIRE DISTRICT, AND WE'RE WORKING ON SOME OTHER OPTIONS FOR SOME DRIVE THRU CLINICS.
SO MORE TO COME ON THAT SOON, I HOPE.
I WANT TO TALK JUST A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE POTENTIAL FOR A RETURN TO IN-PERSON BOARD MEETINGS.
I KNOW THAT'S SOMETHING THAT YOU ALL WILL BE DISCUSSING VERY SOON.
AND SO WITH THAT, I WANTED TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SOME OF OUR PLANS FOR HOW WE WOULD APPROACH IN-PERSON BOARD MEETINGS AT A FUTURE DATE.
SO THIS PHOTOS THAT YOU SEE HERE ARE SOME OF THE SETUPS THAT WE HAVE PLANNED TO PROVIDE FOR SOME MITIGATION STRATEGIES IN THE BOARDROOM.
USING THIS SETUP, YOU CAN SEE THAT WE PROBABLY WE CAN HAVE A MAXIMUM OF 40 ATTENDEES AT A BOARD MEETING WITH CHAIRS SPACED OUT SIX FEET APART.
IN ADDITION, NOW I KNOW THERE PROBABLY ARE SOME ADDITIONAL MEASURES THAT YOU
[01:00:04]
ALL WILL WANT TO CONSIDER.SO I WANT TO SHARE THIS WITH YOU TONIGHT, JUST AS A WAY TO GET YOU THINKING ABOUT WHAT IN-PERSON BOARD MEETINGS COULD LOOK LIKE IN THE FUTURE.
AND SO I LOOK FORWARD TO THE OPPORTUNITY TO TALK WITH YOU FURTHER AFTER YOU'VE HAD A CHANCE TO THINK ABOUT THIS.
BUT AGAIN, I JUST WANTED TO SHARE THIS WITH YOU TONIGHT SO THAT YOU CAN SEE WHAT THE SETUP FOR THE BOARD MEETING COULD LOOK LIKE.
IT'S PART OF THE DISCUSSION, THANK YOU, GREG, IS WE A RECOMMENDATION FROM STAFF IS TO WAIT UNTIL THE SECOND BOARD MEETING IN JANUARY BECAUSE AGAIN, OUR RATES ARE STILL VERY HIGH.
BUT OTHER AREA SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE MOVING TOWARD IN-PERSON MEETINGS, SO HAVE A DISCUSSION WITH THE BOARD AT THE NEXT MEETING.
WE'LL AGAIN DOES IT HAVE A DISCUSSION AT THE DECEMBER BOARD MEETING IN TERMS OF WHAT IT COULD LOOK LIKE FOR THE SECOND FOR SOMETIME IN JANUARY? SO.
SO I'LL WORK WITH BOARD LEADERSHIP ON ON MAKING SURE THAT WE HAVE THAT AGENDA FOR THE NEXT BOARD MEETING, BUT WANTED TO REALLY BROACH THE DISCUSSION TODAY.
ARE THOSE CHAIRS REALLY SIX FEET APART? COULD WE NOT HAVE THEM THREE FEET APART? WELL, I THINK THAT'S I THINK THAT'S A SUBJECT OF DISCUSSION FOR SURE.
AGAIN, I THINK WE SET THESE UP USING THE MAXIMUM DISTANCE.
BUT CERTAINLY YOU COULD GO YOU COULD GO WITH THREE FEET, WITH OTHER MITIGATION STRATEGIES IN PLACE AS WELL.
BUT GREG, AM I CORRECT THAT WE WILL BE ALSO STREAMING IT OR VIDEOING IT AND MAKING IT SO I WANT THE PUBLIC TO KNOW THAT, YOU KNOW, IF THEY DON'T WANT TO COME OR THERE'S NOT ENOUGH ROOM FOR THEM, WE WILL STILL HAVE ACCESS TO TO ALL BOARD MEETINGS TO EVERYBODY WHO IS INTERESTED IN SEEING IT.
AND THREE FEET'S, ONLY FOUR CLASSROOMS, I THINK IT'S AGAIN WE'LL WE'LL HAVE THE DISCUSSION AT THE NEXT BOARD MEETING AND WE'LL MAKE SURE THAT WE PROVIDE THE BOARD WITH ALL THE CURRENT PARAMETERS OR THE MITIGATION STRATEGIES THAT ARE IN EFFECT AT THAT TIME FOR IN-PERSON MEETINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FROM STAFF.
AND AGAIN, THE BOARD CAN DELIBERATE AND PROVIDE US SOME GUIDANCE AS WE PREPARE FOR A JANUARY REENTRY.
AGAIN, I THINK THAT WILL BE THE FIRST TIME I'LL SEE THE ENTIRE BOARD TOGETHER AT A BOARD MY MY FIRST.
I'M ACTUALLY EXCITED FOR MY FIRST OFFICIAL BOARD MEETING IN THE PUBLIC, SO IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME.
AND I KNOW WE DO HAVE A LOT OF PEOPLE HELPING THIS DECENT PHOTOS WHEN I WAS ABLE TO SUBSTITUTE AS A BUILDING PRINCIPAL, I HAVEN'T DONE THAT FOR 18 YEARS.
SO JUST FYI, OUR FIRST TIME SOMEBODY IS A PRINCIPAL FOR 18 AS AN ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL HAS BEEN 18 YEARS AND THE OLD WALKIE TALKIE AND BACK OF THE JACKET BELT.
STILL, IT JUST BECOMES HABIT FOR PEOPLE.
BEING THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR FOR SO LONG, HE IS USED TO GRABBING A WALKIE TALKIE AND PUT IT IN THE BACK OF YOUR JACKET AND HIDING IT WITH YOUR JACKET.
SO I WAS ABLE JUST TO REALLY SEE JUST GREAT TEACHING AND LEARNING FROM OUR KIDS AT BRIER ELEMENTARY.
AND AGAIN, JUST APPRECIATE ALL THE OTHER STAFF I KNOW THE REST OF THE SENIOR STAFF ARE ALSO VOLUNTEERING OUT IN SCHOOLS WHENEVER POSSIBLE TO SUPPORT OUR PRINCIPALS AS WELL AS OUR TEACHERS ON SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT.
THEY'RE SERVING AS SUBSTITUTES RIGHT NOW WHEN NEEDED, AND THEY'RE NEEDED OFTEN AND THEY'RE NEEDED, OFTEN RIGHT NOW.
SO I APPRECIATE ALL THE STAFF, THE DISTRICT OFFICE THAT ARE SUPPORTING SCHOOLS.
GREG VOLUNTEERED AT ALDERWOOD MIDDLE TODAY OR YESTERDAY FOR LUNCH DUTY.
AND AGAIN, WE'RE ON CALL FOR PEOPLE WHEN NEEDED WHENEVER WE CAN GET OUT THERE JUST TO SUPPORT OUR BUILDING.
I THINK THAT'S BEEN VERY APPRECIATED AND I REALLY APPRECIATE THE FLEXIBILITY OF STAFF OF CANCELING MEETINGS WHEN NEEDED, WHEN THEY NEED TO GO OUT TO BUILDINGS.
I KNOW IT'S A THE WORKS DONE AFTER HOURS AFTER KIDS LEAVE, AND I KNOW THAT SO AND BUT I APPRECIATE THE BUILDING STAFF THAT ARE WORKING SO HARD TO DO WHAT THEY CAN.
AND THIS IS JUST A QUICK SHOT OF THE THE BRIER AND THE KINDERGARTEN KIDS WERE OUT.
I DON'T THINK I'VE OPENED SO MANY KINDERGARTEN, SO CARTONS AND CARTONS OF LITTLE MILK FOR KIDS, YOU KNOW, LIKE KINDERGARTEN KIDS.
CAN YOU OPEN MY MILK? CAN YOU OPEN MY MILK? IT WAS A LOT OF FUN, SO I APPRECIATE.
I THINK I GO BACK TO ANOTHER BUILDING HERE IN ABOUT A WEEK.
SO LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT AS WELL.
BUT JUST A WITH GREAT APPRECIATION TO ALL THE STAFF, THE DISTRICT OFFICE AND ALL THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT.
THEY'RE MAKING A GO OF IT TO MAKE SURE OUR KIDS ARE ARE RECEIVING THE EDUCATION THAT THEY DESERVE.
[01:05:01]
I THINK THAT'S THE END OF THE YET.WE HAD ONE MORE, SO I APOLOGIZE FOR THAT.
ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS FROM THE FROM THE BOARD? IF NOT, MAYBE WE CAN HAVE OUR OUR TRUSTED ADVISORS.
I HAVE A QUESTION THAT I THINK IS PROBABLY FOR DANA.
THINKING ABOUT MS. QUINTANA'S COMMENT, AND WE'VE HAD HEARD FROM OTHERS.
WHAT WHAT WOULD IT TAKE? TO BE ABLE TO REDUCED THE AMOUNT OF TIME THAT STUDENTS, PARTICULARLY THE UNVACCINATED STUDENTS, ARE OUT ON QUARANTINE, AND I GUESS I HADN'T REALIZED THAT WHEN THEY'RE OUT ON QUARANTINE, THEY'RE NOT GETTING INSTRUCTION BECAUSE I THOUGHT THEY WERE.
SO HOW DO WE MAKE THAT MORE EQUIVALENT TO VACCINATED KIDS AND FOR ALL KIDS? HOW CAN WE POSSIBLY MITIGATE IT SO THAT THEY'RE NOT LOSING INSTRUCTION? RIGHT? SO WE HAVE MOVED TO THE SEVEN DAY FROM THE 10 DAY.
THIS IS FOR UNVACCINATED STUDENTS.
THIS IS PER DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH.
SO WE WERE ABLE TO TAKE THAT NEW GUIDANCE BECAUSE WE WERE AT 14 AND THEN WE'RE AT 10 AND NOW WE'RE ABLE TO GET SEVEN.
AND THAT IS WITH A RETURN TO LEARN, ACTUALLY LEARN TO RETURN.
I THINK THEY SWITCHED IT ON US.
IT'S LEARN TO RETURN AND IT'S AFTER SEVEN DAYS IF YOU HAVE YOUR PIECE OR YOUR TEST THAT SHOWS NEGATIVE BETWEEN DAYS FIVE AND SEVEN.
SO THE IDEA IS IF YOU IF YOU'RE UNVACCINATED, YOU'VE BEEN DETERMINED TO CLOSE CONTACT.
HOPEFULLY BY DAY FIVE, YOU'LL EITHER HAVE YOUR SHOW OR YOU'LL BE ABLE TO TEST AND SEE, GOSH, YES, I'M PROBABLY COVID POSITIVE OR I'M GOING TO BE SHOW THAT I'M COVID POSITIVE.
SO WE HAVE THOSE TEST RESULTS, THEN YOU CAN COME BACK.
AND SO THAT HELPS SHORTEN THE QUARANTINE THAT IS THREE DAYS BECAUSE THAT'S A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF TIME.
AND AND I THINK THAT THAT'S WHY THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH ALSO PUT THAT OUT IS KIND OF LIKE MEETING IN THE MIDDLE A LITTLE BIT.
IT'S NOT THE 14 DAY QUARANTINE WE ORIGINALLY HAD.
IT'S BACKING IT UP AND JUST SAYING, OK, WE ARE GOING TO QUARANTINE.
KEEP AN EYE ON OUR REALLY CLOSE CONTACTS.
AND AGAIN, IT'S ONLY FOR THE UNVACCINATED.
SO DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH GAVE US A COUPLE OF OPTIONS, AND THAT IS THE ONE THAT WE MOVED TO WAS THE REDUCED TO THE SEVEN DAYS.
AND THEN SPECIFICALLY ABOUT GREG AND HELEN AND VICTOR CAN JUMP IN HERE, TOO, ABOUT WHAT BUILDINGS ARE SPECIFICALLY DOING TO REACH OUT TO KIDS IN THOSE KIND OF THINGS.
BUT IT IS LIKE WHEN KIDS ARE OUT FOR SEVEN DAYS, THEN ACCESSING MATERIALS AND THOSE KIND OF THINGS AND IT IT'S DIFFICULT FOR KIDS TO ACCESS REMOTE LEARNING BECAUSE THERE ISN'T A ZOOM SET UP THERE.
IT ISN'T LIKE LAST YEAR WHERE THERE WAS THAT ASYNCHRONOUS LEARNING ALREADY SET UP AND AVAILABLE FOR THEM, BUT THEY COULD ACCESS A LEARNING MANAGEMENT, THEIR LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS IN THEIR CLASSROOM AND ACCESS THEIR ASSIGNMENTS AND THOSE KIND OF THINGS THAT WAY.
EVERY BUILDING AS WELL? SO WE STILL HAVE THAT AND WE'RE MOVING TO A NEW SYSTEM THAT THE TEST RESULTS WILL COME BACK EVEN FASTER, WHICH IS REALLY HELPFUL AS WELL.
YEAH, I WOULD JUST ADD THAT THAT THAT I THINK HAS BEEN THE CHALLENGE WHEN STUDENTS ARE QUARANTINED IS THAT WE DON'T HAVE, YOU KNOW, LAST LAST YEAR WHEN WE WERE BACK IN HYBRID AT SECONDARY, WE WERE USING THE CONCURRENT INSTRUCTION MODEL WHICH HAD, YOU KNOW, SIMULTANEOUS ZOOM AND LIVE INSTRUCTION HAPPENING AT THE SAME TIME.
AND THAT'S JUST NOT THAT WASN'T PART OF THE AGREEMENT THAT WE HAD THIS YEAR WITH THE ASSOCIATION.
SO, YOU KNOW, WE'RE KIND OF FALLING BACK TO THE THE OLD WAY OF DOING THINGS.
AND I'M NOT SAYING IT'S A BETTER WAY TO DO THINGS.
I'M JUST SAYING WE WE'VE GONE BACK TO PLANNING, YOU KNOW, WHEN STUDENTS ARE OUT, WE PROVIDE THEM WITH ACCESS TO THE WORK THAT THEY MISS.
BUT THEY BUT THEY ARE MISSING, THEY ARE MISSING INSTRUCTION.
AND THAT'S THE AND THAT'S THE CHALLENGE THAT WE HAVE TO WE HAVE TO CONTINUE TO TRY TO OVERCOME FOR OUR KIDS.
SO I JUST ATTENDED SOME OF US, JUST ATTENDED OUR SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION MEETING THIS THIS WEEKEND, AND WE WERE REMINDED BY SUPERINTENDENT RAGDOLL THAT WE, THE THE SCHOOL BOARD, DOESN'T HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO PLAY AROUND WITH WITH THE GUIDE GUIDANCE FROM OUR FROM OUR HEALTH AUTHORITY.
HOWEVER, I KNOW THAT YOU STAFF HAVE BEEN IN DISCUSSIONS WITH THEM ALL ALONG.
IS THERE ANY SENSE THAT SOME OF THIS IS GOING TO EASE UP AT SOME POINT? DR. SPITTERS DID LET US KNOW ON MONDAY THAT WE ACTUALLY EXPECT ANOTHER AFTER THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY THAT THERE MAY BE ANOTHER INCREASE IN COVID CASES, BUT SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH THAT IS OUR FIVE TO 11 YEAR OLDS HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE VACCINATED.
SO IT COULD BE ALMOST A PUSH TOO.
SO WE HOPE THAT WITH MORE AND MORE STUDENTS HAVING ACCESS TO THE VACCINE, THAT WE WILL GET TO A SPACE WHERE WE JUST DON'T HAVE AS MANY AS MANY CASES.
SO THAT'S THAT'S KIND OF WHAT WE KNOW.
WE DO EXPECT A LITTLE BIT OF A SPIKE.
[01:10:02]
WE KNOW KIDS ONLY HAVE THEIR FIRST DOSES AND WE DON'T HAVE WE DON'T HAVE, LIKE DR.BALDERAS MS. SAYING, WE HAVE ELEVEN THOUSAND FIVE TO 11 YEAR OLDS AND WE ONLY HAVE A SMALL CHUNK OF THEM WITH THEIR FIRST DOSE SO FAR.
SO MAYBE INTO THE NEW YEAR, I THINK THAT'S WHEN WE'LL SEE THE DECLINE.
THAT'S WHAT THE PREDICTIONS ARE FROM THE MEDICAL EXPERTS LIKE DR.
SPITTERS AND THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH.
BUT AT THIS POINT, JUST TO, YOU KNOW, AFFIRM.
SO I WAS HEARING SOMETHING FROM THE SPEAKER, BUT IT SOUNDS TO ME AT THE SEVEN DAYS THAT WE'RE REALLY AT.
WE'RE DOING EVERYTHING THAT WE'RE ALLOWED TO DO, OR IS THERE ANY MORE THAT WE ARE ALLOWED TO DO TO REDUCE QUARANTINE TIME? YEAH, THAT IS THE THAT IS THE LIMIT RIGHT NOW FOR UNVACCINATED THE TEST AND THEN THEN THEN HAVING TO ALSO HAVE THAT TEST.
SO WE'RE REALLY WORKING TO PROVIDE THAT.
THE OTHER THING WHERE WE HAVE IS A DRIVE THROUGH TESTING SITE THAT'S BEING ESTABLISHED AT EDMONDS WOODWAY AND IT WILL OFFSET SOME DIFFERENT HOURS AND LIKE AFTER SCHOOL HOURS FOR PEOPLE TO DRIVE THROUGH.
AND HAVE THAT, WE WERE ABLE TO HIRE A FEW STAFF MEMBERS WITH A GRANT THAT WE SECURED TO DO TESTING AND SOME MORE CONTACT TRACING BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT THAT'S AN IMPACT ON OUR BUILDINGS AS WELL.
OUR BUILDING LEADERS ARE DOING A LOT OF CONTACT TRACING AND SO ARE OUR NURSING ADMINISTRATORS AND THINGS.
SO HOPEFULLY WITH THOSE SUPPORTS TO, WE CAN GET OUR PRINCIPALS BACK TO LEADING INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES INSTEAD OF THINGS THAT ARE COVID RELATED.
TESTING TESTING TO STAY AN OPTION TESTING EARLIER THAN AFTER FIVE DAYS.
YEAH, THAT IS ONE OF THE OPTIONS THAT THAT SOME DISTRICTS CONSIDERED THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THAT WE DETERMINE THAT THAT WOULD BE A REALLY DIFFICULT IMPLEMENTATION.
YOU HAVE STUDENTS HAVE TO ACCESS TESTING AND THEN MULTIPLE TIMES WHILE THEY'RE THERE WITH YOU.
OR IN FACT, I TRY TO REMEMBER ALL OF THE PARAMETERS AROUND THAT WE DID AND WE CONFERRED WITH OUR NEIGHBORING DISTRICTS AND THEY'RE ALL DOING THE RETURN TO LEARN ALSO.
AND WITH THE GUIDANCE FROM DOH THAT THE SAFEST OPTION WHEN KIDS HAVE A CLOSE CONTACT AND ARE EXPOSED, THAT WAITING THE FEW DAYS HAVING THEM TEST TO COME BACK, IT RULES OUT STUDENTS COMING RIGHT BACK AFTER A CLOSE CONTACT WITH A POSITIVE PERSON.
SO WE CONFERRED WITH EVERETT AND MUKILTEO AND NORTH SHORE AND LAKE WASHINGTON, SOME OF THE BIGS THAT ARE RIGHT AROUND US AND KNOWING THAT WE HAVE KIDS THAT ARE IN CLASSROOMS THAT ARE, YOU KNOW, THREE FEET APART AND UNMASKED AT LUNCH AND ALL OF THOSE THINGS, THAT'S THAT WAS A HIGH CONCERN FOR US.
AND BECAUSE OUR RATES HAVE CONTINUED TO GO UP, IF WE WERE LOOKING AT SOMETHING WHERE WE WERE ON A HUGE DECLINE, THAT MIGHT BE SOMETHING ELSE TO CONSIDER.
BUT RIGHT NOW WE HAVE CONSISTENTLY HAD INCREASED RATES.
WE'RE AT THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY TWO PER HUNDRED THOUSAND.
I'M STILL SEEING SOME BREAKTHROUGH CASES IN THOSE KIND OF THINGS.
SO WHEN SO WE HAD FIVE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY FOUR CLOSE CONTACTS.
AND ARE WE PROVIDING THE HEALTH DISTRICT WITH INFORMATION REGARDING HOW MANY OF THOSE? I MEAN, DO THEY KNOW HOW MANY OF THOSE ALL SIX HUNDRED ARE VACCINATED AND UNVACCINATED AND HOW MANY OF THE SIX HUNDRED THAT ARE UNVACCINATED? HOW MANY ACTUALLY GOT COVID? BASED ON THE CLOSE CONTACT? IN OTHER WORDS, WE HAVE GOT A LOT OF STATISTICS THAT COULD PERHAPS HELP OUR THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH MAKE SOME DECISIONS ABOUT ACTUAL RISK AND HOW A CLOSE ENVIRONMENT IN A SCHOOL SETTING IS GOING.
ARE WE GIVING THAT INFORMATION ON A REGULAR BASIS TO THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT? OR ARE WE PRECLUDED FROM DOING SO BECAUSE OF SOME SORT OF HIPPO REGULATION? NO, WE DO WITH WHEN WE REPORT THERE'S A CLOSE CONTACT, WE DO THE INVESTIGATION, BUT WE DO IT IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT AND REPORT TO THEM.
I THINK THE OTHER THING THAT'S IMPORTANT TO KNOW IS THAT WHEN THEY SEE CASES THAT ARE CONNECTED, THEN THEY START.
THAT'S WHEN THEY START LOOKING AT LIKE A CERTAIN BUILDING THAT WE'VE HAD.
WE HAVE A SCHOOL CLOSURE AND THAT IS BECAUSE SO MANY CASES WE'RE DEEMED TO BE CONNECTED.
IN FACT, HE HAD A FEW CASES AT ANOTHER BUILDING AND THEY WERE DUE TO NOT BE CONNECTED LIKE THOSE KIDS REALLY LITERALLY NEVER CAME IN CONTACT WITH EACH OTHER.
AND SO IT'S THEY DO KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON THAT.
THEY DO KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON HOW MANY CLOSE CONTACTS AND HOW MANY ARE VACCINATED.
AND IF WE SEE BREAKTHROUGH CASES BECAUSE THE EPIDEMIOLOGISTS AT THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, THEY HAVE A KEEN EYE BECAUSE THEY WANT TO SEE WHAT IS THIS VIRUS DOING RIGHT AND HOW IS IT MUTATING AND HOW IS IT BECOMING MORE CONTAGIOUS AND ALL OF THOSE THINGS, SO THEY DO KEEP AN EYE ON THAT.
SO I KNOW [INAUDIBLE] LOOKS FOR TRENDS, AND IT LOOKS LIKE WE HAVE A SIBLING CONNECTION UP TO IF WE HAVE, YOU KNOW, WE HAD AN OUTBREAK AT THIS BUILDING, IT LOOKS LIKE WE HAVE A
[01:15:01]
SIBLING CONNECTION IN THAT QUADRANT.AND SO IT IS IT'S IT'S I MEAN, IF YOU'RE INTO EPIDEMIOLOGY, IT'S VERY, VERY INTERESTING BECAUSE SEEING HOW THIS MOVES AND HOW IT HOW IT TRANSFERS.
SO I THINK THAT THAT'S KIND OF THE RESEARCH BEHIND THIS AS WE DO STAY IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT.
WE DO HAVE A MONITORING SYSTEM.
WE DO HAVE BASICALLY A CASE ON EACH ONE OF THESE OF THESE CONTACTS OF THE COVID CASES THAT ARE IN THE IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
WE HAVE A CASE THAT LIKE IT'S A WHOLE FORM THAT WE FILL OUT AND WE WATCH AND SEE THEN WHICH ONES ARE CAN BE DEEMED CONNECTED TO THE ONES THAT ARE POSITIVE.
DID I PICK THAT UP THAT IF WE WANTED TO CHANGE THE WAY THAT WE'RE DEALING WITH INSTRUCTION DURING QUARANTINE, THAT THAT SPECIFICALLY WOULD HAVE TO BE RENEGOTIATED WITH OUR UNION UNIONS? IT'S A CHANGE IN WORKING CONDITIONS, YES.
SO THAT WOULD BE KIND OF WHAT GREG WAS SAYING.
IF WE WANTED SOMETHING ELSE TO BE DONE FOR KIDS THAT ARE ON QUARANTINE, THEN YES, WE WOULD.
WE'RE ALREADY SEEING A SMALL DECREASE IN THE NUMBER OF KIDS QUARANTINED AS MORE AND MORE KIDS BECAUSE WE STILL HAVE OUR, YOU KNOW, EVEN OUR 12 TO 18 YEAR OLDS THAT ARE STILL CONTINUING TO GET VACCINATED.
SO WE'RE SEEING THAT DECREASE AS WELL.
AND WE HOPE TO SEE CASE COUNTS GO DOWN.
WE ARE SEEING A LITTLE BIT LESS IN THE DISTRICT RIGHT NOW.
AND SO WE HOPE TO SEE THAT TREND CONTINUE AS WE HAVE MORE ACCESS TO THE VACCINE.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS, BOARD? THANK YOU.
DO WE HAVE ANOTHER REPORT, I BELIEVE WE DO THE BUDGET, AND I KNOW DR.
KILGORE, IF YOU WANTED THE STUDENTS TO SPEAK NOW OR WAIT TILL THE VERY END.
IF STUDENTS HAVE SOMETHING IN PARTICULAR TO ASK ABOUT ABOUT THIS TOPIC, ABOUT THE STATUS OF SCHOOLS.
IF YOU'D LIKE TO CHIME IN NOW, YOU'LL ALSO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY AT THE END.
I'M SORRY I FORGOT YOU, BUT YOU WERE QUIET.
SO I WANT TO SHARE SOMETHING THAT A COUPLE OF MY TEACHERS DID TELL ME, AND THIS WAS ABOUT A MONTH AGO, SO I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS STILL TRUE, BUT THEY SAID THAT THEY WERE NOT NOTIFIED IF A STUDENT WAS ABSENT, IF A STUDENT WAS ABSENT DUE TO BE A CLOSE CONTACT.
SO THEY WERE NOTIFIED IF STUDENTS WERE ABSENT BECAUSE THEY WERE TESTED BECAUSE THEY TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID.
THEY DIDN'T KNOW IF STUDENTS WERE ABSENT, IF THEY WERE IF THEY WERE CLOSE CONTACTS.
SO THEN THEY DIDN'T KNOW TO GIVE THE MATERIAL TO THESE STUDENTS.
THEY DIDN'T KNOW HOW LONG THEY WERE GOING TO BE ABSENT.
AND I KNOW THAT SOME STUDENTS DON'T MAKE THE EFFORT TO EMAIL THEIR TEACHERS TO ASK FOR MATERIALS.
SO I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU ALL KNOW.
I THINK THAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR US TO HAVE.
I'VE ALSO HEARD THE SAME THING ISABEL AS WELL THAT YOU KIND OF READ MY MIND THERE LIKE THERE'S A LITTLE BIT OF MISCOMMUNICATION THERE AND ALSO LIKE, I MEAN, YOU KNOW, I JUST THINKING ABOUT HOW EVERY TIME THERE'S A CLOSE CONTACT, HOW PRINCIPALS ARE HAVING TO DO THAT RIGHT NOW AND JUST THINKING ABOUT THAT IS JUST LIKE THERE'S SO MUCH FOR THEM TO HANDLE.
BUT I DEFINITELY THINK LIKE COMMUNICATION IN TERMS OF THE TEACHER KNOWING WHY THEIR STUDENTS OUT.
I MEAN, INSTEAD OF SPECULATION, THE TEACHER DOES LIKE SHOULD JUST KNOW, ESPECIALLY LIKE I KNOW THAT WITH CASES IN THE ROOM OF WHERE THE TEACHER IS TEACHING LIKE THERE HAS BEEN A LACK OF COMMUNICATION IN TERMS OF THEM BEING NOTIFIED THAT THERE WERE CASES AROUND THEM.
AND THAT'S ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT I THINK THEY SHOULD KNOW.
BUT I WILL SAY THAT IN TERMS OF HOW TEACHERS HAVE HANDLED, YOU KNOW, MAKING SURE THAT ALL OF THE EQUIPMENT OR ALL OF THE MATERIAL IS STILL ON CANVAS AND ALL THE THE LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AREAS AS MUCH AS THEY CAN, AT LEAST FROM WHAT I'VE SEEN AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL, THEY'VE DONE SUCH A PHENOMENAL JOB OF LIKE CONTINUING TO KEEP THOSE THINGS UPDATED AND YES, SEVEN DAYS SUCK OF QUARANTINING IF YOU'RE LOSING INSTRUCTION.
BUT I WILL ALSO SAY THAT HAVING HAD COVID ITSELF A YEAR AGO, THAT SUCKS EVEN MORE.
AND I PUT THOSE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.
I MEAN, I'M HOPING THAT IT'LL LET UP.
I DON'T THINK ANYBODY WANTS TO BE IN THIS SITUATION, BUT FOLLOWING THE GUIDELINES IS ALWAYS APPRECIATED.
AND, YOU KNOW, HOPEFULLY WE CAN COME UP WITH A BETTER SYSTEM GOING FORWARD BECAUSE
[01:20:03]
LOSING SEVEN DAYS OF INSTRUCTIONS IS REALLY PAINFUL AND DIFFICULT.BUT YOU KNOW, TEACHERS ARE DOING A PRETTY AMAZING JOB GIVEN WHAT THEY HAVE, AND WE ALL KNOW THAT HYBRID TEACHING WAS KIND OF A NIGHTMARE FOR THEM.
AND SO JUST KIND OF EMULATE THE ONLINE SYSTEM.
THEY'VE DONE A PRETTY GOOD JOB OF THAT, AND I THINK THAT IS APPRECIATED.
OK, WELL, LET'S MOVE ON THEN TO THE BUSINESS REPORT.
SO WE HAVE TWO REPORTS THIS MONTH, BOTH FOR YEAR END AND YEAR START.
SO FIRST, WE'LL START WITH THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING AUGUST 31ST, WHICH WE WAS DUE AND COMPLETED ON OCTOBER 25TH.
SO CHERELLE, YOU CAN GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE.
THIS IS AN ADDITIONAL SLIDE THAT I PUT IN FOR THE YEAR END REPORT.
I'VE ALSO ATTACHED THE REQUIRED F 196.
IT'S OUR YEAR END FINANCIAL REPORTS.
I WON'T GO THROUGH IT TONIGHT BECAUSE I BELIEVE IT'S LIKE 80 PAGES.
BUT OF COURSE, IF THERE'S ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE F-196, YOU CAN FEEL FREE TO REACH OUT TO DR. BALDERAS, AND HE WILL GET ME THE QUESTION.
SO I THINK THE MOST CRITICAL ELEMENT IS HOW DID WE END? SO THIS IS AN ENDING FUND BALANCE REPORT SHOWING WHERE WE ENDED A YEAR AGO, WHAT WE ANTICIPATED IN THE BUDGET AND WHERE WE ENDED THIS AUGUST 31ST.
SO AT THE BEGINNING, WE HAVE A CATEGORY CALLED NON SPENDABLE BECAUSE IT'S NOT CASH.
OUR MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES INVENTORY IS FAIRLY CONSISTENT.
THAT INCLUDES OUR FUEL INVENTORY.
FOOD SERVICES INVENTORY IS A LITTLE BIT UP BECAUSE WE HAD A CONTINUED ROBUST SUMMER PROGRAM LEADING INTO THE FALL.
PREPAID EXPENDITURES, THESE ARE ITEMS THAT WERE PAID FOR IN THE LAST SCHOOL YEAR, BUT WON'T BE USED UNTIL THIS SCHOOL YEAR.
AND SO THE EXPENDITURE WILL ACTUALLY GET CHARGED TO 21-22.
IT'S AN ACCOUNTING MECHANISM, AND THE BULK OF THE INCREASE WAS A LOT OF TECHNOLOGY EQUIPMENT THAT WAS RECEIVED IN THE SUMMER OR, EXCUSE ME, PAID FOR IN THE SUMMER, BUT WILL BE PLACED INTO USE IN THE 21-22 SCHOOL YEAR.
THE NEXT CATEGORY IS RESTRICTED.
SO FIRST, WE HAVE CARRYOVER OF SOME STATE FUNDS, JUST ABOUT ONE POINT NINE MILLION, AND THE MAIN CATEGORY IN THERE IS CTE AND LAP FUNDS THAT WERE UNABLE TO BE SPENT LAST YEAR, CHALLENGING YEAR, AND WE MUST CARRY IT OVER TO BE SPENT FOR THE SAME PURPOSE AS CTE AND LAP, WE HAD BUDGETED A CARRYOVER OF A FOOD SERVICE IN THIS RESTRICTED CATEGORY.
AND THEN WE DISCOVERED THAT IT WAS TO BE PLACED IN THE ASSIGNED CATEGORY LATER ON THIS DOCUMENT.
WE DIDN'T RECEIVE ANY UPDATES FROM LABOR AND INDUSTRIES TO CHANGE THOSE SET ASIDES FOR SELF-INSURANCE, SO THOSE ARE STILL THE SAME AS THEY WERE A YEAR AGO.
ASSIGNED TO DEPARTMENT CARRYOVER, WE DID LOWER OUR CARRYOVER THRESHOLD FROM SEVEN PERCENT TO FOUR PERCENT AND DIDN'T AUTHORIZE AS MANY WAIVERS TO THAT POLICY.
AND SO YOU CAN SEE THAT DOLLAR AMOUNT HAS GONE DOWN BOTH FROM LAST YEAR AND FROM WHAT WE PLANNED.
THAT IS THE SAME FOR SCHOOLS CARRYOVER AS WELL.
THE CATEGORY ASSIGNED A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CARRYOVER THAT IS FROM BARGAINING AGREEMENTS, AND SO THOSE AMOUNTS ARE PER THOSE CONTRACTS.
GRANT CARRYOVER IS USUALLY TIMING BASED.
SO IF WE RECEIVE A GRANT SAY IN AUGUST, IT WILL BE BOOKED TO 2021, BUT THEN THE SPENDING WILL OCCUR IN 21-22.
SO THAT VARIANCE AGAIN IS JUST BASED ON TIMING.
ASSIGNED TO ENTERPRISE ACTIVITY CARRYOVER.
ONE OF THE REASONS FOR THE DECREASE IS THAT WE MOVED SOME OF THE DEFERRED COPIER
[01:25:03]
PROGRAM FUNDS BACK INTO THE GENERAL FUND BALANCE BECAUSE WE DID AN EVALUATION OF OUR COPIER REPLACEMENT PROGRAM AND MOVED IT BACK INTO UNASSIGNED.THE FOOD SERVICE DEPARTMENT, AGAIN, THAT WAS A VERY ROBUST YEAR, PROVIDING SEVEN DAY MEAL KITS, EVEN THOUGH WE WEREN'T SERVING PAID MEALS, LOTS OF FREE MEALS AND SO THE CARRYOVER THE FOOD SERVICE DEPARTMENT, THE ADDITIONAL FUNDS MUST BE HELD FOR THE FOOD SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND THEN SPENT THIS NEXT COMING YEAR.
AND THEN THAT BRINGS US TO THE UNASSIGNED FUND BALANCE AGAIN, WE TARGET OUR BOARD POLICIES FOUR PERCENT.
SO YOU'LL SEE THE UNASSIGNED TO MINIMUM FUND BALANCE POLICY JAIL CODE NUMBER EIGHT NINE ONE THAT REPRESENTS FOUR PERCENT OF EXPENDITURES.
AND THEN THE DIFFERENCE, WHICH HAPPENS TO BE OVER TWO POINT FOUR MILLION, IS THAT AMOUNT IN EXCESS OF FOUR PERCENT.
SO LAST YEAR WE ENDED THE YEAR UNASSIGNED FUND BALANCE OF 5.23.
WE HAD ANTICIPATED A 4.41 PERCENT UNASSIGNED FUND BALANCE AND IT CAME IN HIGHER AT 4.72, SO A LITTLE BIT LOWER THAN LAST YEAR, BUT THEN HIGHER THAN WE PROJECTED.
SO I KNOW THAT'S A LOT OF INFORMATION IN ONE SLIDE.
SO BEFORE I MOVE ON, I WOULD JUST WANT TO SEE IF THERE'S ANY QUESTIONS ON THIS SLIDE.
THIS IS ANN, LIBYA, THANK YOU, CAN YOU CAN YOU TELL ME IF OR WHERE ANY OF THE ESSER, ONE, TWO OR THREE DOLLARS ARE LISTED? YES, THERE WILL BE A SLIDE THAT HAS A LITTLE BIT OF INFORMATION ON ESSER.
SO ESSER, WE SPEND THE MONEY AND THEN WE CLAIM THAT SPENDING FROM OSPI.
AND SO IT IS BASICALLY A WASH, EXCEPT FOR THE INDIRECT AMOUNT THAT WE GET TO KEEP.
SO IF WE SPEND $100 OF ESSER, THEN WE MIGHT CLAIM ONE HUNDRED AND TEN DOLLARS AND THAT $10 GOES INTO UNASSIGNED FUND BALANCE AND THEN WE DO HAVE A SLIDE WITH SOME ABSURD DETAILS COMING UP.
SO, CHERELLE, IF YOU COULD GO THE NEXT SLIDE.
UM, THIS IS OUR PIE CHART ON REVENUES.
I WOULD SAY THAT THE STATE GENERAL PURPOSE AND SPECIAL PURPOSE AND LOCAL TAXES ARE PRETTY CONSISTENT WITH PREVIOUS YEARS WHERE YOU SEE A FLUCTUATION IS LOCAL AND OTHER SOURCES IS DOWN BECAUSE.
UM, MEAL SERVICE PAID MEALS ARE NORMALLY PART OF THAT SLICE OF THE PIE, AND SINCE WE WEREN'T COLLECTING FOUR MEALS LAST YEAR, THAT SLICE OF THE PIE WENT DOWN AS A PERCENTAGE AND FEDERAL REVENUES BECAUSE OF ESSER DID INCREASE SLIGHTLY.
SO I WOULD SEE NORMALLY LOCAL IS MORE ABOUT FIVE PERCENT AND FEDERAL IS MORE LIKE FIVE PERCENT, SO THEY KIND OF OFFSET EACH OTHER.
UM, EXPENDITURES, PRETTY SIMILAR TEACHING AND TEACHING SUPPORT IS USUALLY SLIGHTLY UNDER 80 PERCENT, MORE LIKE SEVENTY EIGHT, AND THAT THEY TOOK A LARGER SHARE OF THE PIE BECAUSE TRANSPORTATION COSTS WERE DOWN AND FOOD SERVICE COSTS WERE DOWN.
THIS COMES OUT OF THE F1 NINETY SIX, BUT I INCLUDED IT IN THIS BUDGET STATUS PACKET.
SO ON CARES ONE, WHICH IS ALSO OR CARES, WHICH IS ESSER ONE WAS NOT SEPARATELY IDENTIFIED BY OSPI.
SO AND IT HAS BEEN ALMOST ENTIRELY EXPENDED BY THE END OF AUGUST, EXCEPT FOR A LITTLE BIT OF PRIVATE SCHOOL MONIES THAT WERE REQUIRED TO BE SET ASIDE UNDER CAIR'S AND THEN KIND OF IN THE TOP THIRD OF THE PAGE YOU WILL SEE UM PROGRAM 12, 13 AND 14.
SO YOU CAN SEE THAT IN ESSER TWO, WE SPENT JUST OVER A MILLION, JUST UNDER A
[01:30:05]
MILLION ONE LAST YEAR ESSER THREE UNDER A MILLION AND ESSER THREE B, WHICH IS THE PART THE 20 PERCENT OF ESSER THREE THAT IS REQUIRED TO BE SPENT ON EXTENDED LEARNING, CREDIT RETRIEVAL, THINGS LIKE THAT.SO A WHOLE LOT OF SUMMER SCHOOL AND THEN WE STILL HAVE ESSER TWO, ESSER THREE AND ESSER 3B FUNDS REMAINING THAT HAVE BEEN BUDGETED FOR THIS YEAR.
THE REASON I'VE INCLUDED THIS SLIDE IS BECAUSE IT SHOWS YOU IN THIS FIRST COLUMN PROGRAM EXPENDITURES, THE STATE RESOURCES OR FEDERAL RESOURCES THAT WERE AVAILABLE TO FUND THOSE EXPENDITURES.
AND THEN WE HAVE THIS COLUMN CALLED OTHER.
NOW THE PREDOMINANT SOURCE OF OTHER IS LOCAL TAXES.
THERE IS ALSO INTEREST INCOME.
THERE'S SOME PROPERTY RENTALS AND YOU CAN KIND OF SEE HOW WHICH PROGRAMS NEED ADDITIONAL REVENUE.
UM, THIS VOCATIONAL EDUCATION ACTUALLY IS A FEE, NOT LEVY.
DISTRICT WIDE SUPPORT, WHICH INCLUDES THE BOARD AND THE SUPERINTENDENT, THE BUSINESS OFFICE AND HUMAN RESOURCES AND THE GROUNDS AND CUSTODIAN.
THOSE COSTS ARE ALSO OFFSET PARTIALLY BY THE LEVY DOWN TO SPECIAL EDUCATION IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PAGE, WE ACTUALLY DID VERY WELL.
THEY UTILIZED JUST OVER FOUR POINT SIX MILLION OF LOCAL LEVY FUNDS, WHICH IS MUCH LOWER THAN IN PREVIOUS YEARS.
UM, INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMS, OTHER PROGRAMS, SEVENTY NINE.
THAT IS WHERE WE CARVE OUT THAT PORTION OF BASIC ED THAT WE BELIEVE TO BE LEVY FUNDED.
UM, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE THREE DAYS THAT THE STATE FUNDS FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.
CHILD CARE, THAT IS NOT LEVY, THAT IS WELL, IT'S NOT ENTIRELY LEVY, IT'S ALSO THE ECEAP GRANT THAT IS CONSIDERED ANOTHER RESOURCE.
AND THEN YOU CAN SEE THINGS LIKE OTHER COMMUNITY SERVICES THAT'S PREDOMINANTLY FACILITY RENTALS, FIELD RENTALS AND THE LIKE, AND THAT IS FUNDED BY RENTAL FEES.
UM, THIS IS WE'VE BEEN REPORTING ON THIS PARTICULAR SLIDE THROUGHOUT THE COURSE OF ALL 12 MONTHS, SO THERE ISN'T ANYTHING SIGNIFICANT TO REPORT ON THIS SLIDE IN THE NEXT ONE.
BOTH BOTH REVENUES ON THIS SLIDE AND THEN EXPENDITURES ON THE NEXT SLIDE WERE BELOW BUDGET.
WE OFTEN HAVE BUDGETED CONTINGENCY TO MAKE SURE THAT IF WE GET A NEW GRANT OR ESSER WAS, YOU KNOW, AN UNEXPECTED SOURCE OF REVENUE, THE DOLLAR AMOUNT THAT IT WAS THAT.
SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT IF WE DO RECEIVE MORE FUNDING, THAT WE DO HAVE THE CAPACITY TO SPEND THEM.
SO GENERALLY SPEAKING, OUR REVENUES AND EXPENDITURES WILL BE LOWER THAN BUDGETED.
SO YOU CAN SEE THAT ON THE NEXT SLIDE.
AND THE SAME THING, SO OUR ACTUAL SPENDING IS LESS THAN BUDGET, AND THAT'S WHERE WE WANT TO BE, OTHERWISE WE WOULD HAVE TO ASK YOU FOR A BUDGET EXTENSION.
THIS IS GRAPHICALLY REPRESENTING THAT TOTAL FUND BALANCE CAME IN SLIGHTLY OVER WHERE IT DID LAST YEAR, WITH THE UNASSIGNED PORTION BEING A LITTLE BIT LESS, BUT OVERALL IN VERY GOOD SHAPE TO END THE YEAR.
AND I JUST WANTED TO POINT OUT ON THIS SLIDE ASPE, OF COURSE, AS YOU REMEMBER, THE PERCENTAGE OF SPENDING VERY, VERY LOW, IT IS STARTING TO RESUME NORMAL, NORMAL REVENUE GENERATION AND SPENDING THIS YEAR, WHICH YOU'LL SEE A BIT IN SEPTEMBER.
THE CAPITAL PROJECTS FUNDS THE LARGE AMOUNT OF REVENUES OVER WHAT WAS BUDGETED WAS BECAUSE IN ADDITION TO THE LEVY, WE SOLD PROPERTY AND WE ISSUED LIMITED GENERAL OBLIGATION BONDS.
SO DEBT SERVICE, THE REVENUES ARE DOWN BECAUSE WE ROLLED BACK THE LEVY
[01:35:03]
COLLECTIONS AS WE PREPARE FOR FUTURE YEARS EXPENDITURES.SO WE HAVE SUFFICIENT FUNDING FOR EXPENDITURES.
BUT WE DID DO THAT ROLL BACK LAST END OF JANUARY.
I BELIEVE TRANSPORTATION VEHICLE FUNDS, SOME OF THE BUSSES DIDN'T ARRIVE UNTIL THIS FALL, SO YOU'LL SEE THEM IN THE SEPTEMBER REPORT.
WE STOP AT JUNE, SO NOTHING CHANGED BETWEEN JUNE AND AUGUST, AND THEN THE REST OF THE PAGES ARE THE REGULAR BUDGET STATUS REPORTS.
AND THEN IF THERE'S NO QUESTIONS, WE CAN TURN TO SEPTEMBER.
OK, SO IT'S NICE TO SEE SOME OF OUR OTHER FUNDS PICKING UP AND BEHAVING AS NORMAL.
SPECIFICALLY, ASB GENERAL FUND REVENUES AND EXPENSES ARE VERY COMPARABLE TO WHERE WE WERE AT LAST SEPTEMBER.
ASB AGAIN, BOTH REVENUES AND EXPENSES ARE SHOULD BE AT THE LEVEL OF ALL OF LAST YEAR BY THE END OF OCTOBER.
WE ARE COLLECTING LEVY PROCEEDS FROM THE 2020 VOTER AUTHORIZATION, AND WE WILL START SEEING LEVY COLLECTIONS FROM THE 2021 VOTER AUTHORIZATION IN 2022.
THE DEBT SERVICE FUND, AGAIN, WE DON'T SEE AN EXPENDITURE, ANY EXPENDITURES OF SIGNIFICANCE UNTIL THE PRINCIPAL AND INTEREST PAYMENTS ARE MADE IN DECEMBER AND THEN TRANSPORTATION, YOU CAN SEE SOME OF THOSE LATE BUSSES CAME IN IN SEPTEMBER.
BUT AT LEAST THEY'RE THEY'RE AVAILABLE TO BE ON THE ROAD NOW.
UM, I WOULD SAY THAT TRENDS ARE CONTINUING PRETTY CONSISTENTLY WITH EXPECTATIONS.
THERE IS A LITTLE BIT OF AN INCREASE IN PURCHASE SERVICES.
BUT AGAIN, THAT'S JUST A FUNCTION OF BEING BACK IN SCHOOL RATHER THAN PURELY HYBRID OR FULL REMOTE.
CAN WE CAN WE GO BACK TO THAT ONE, LYDIA? SO WE'RE AT THIS POINT ANTICIPATING ABOUT A, DOES THAT LOOK LIKE ABOUT A NINE POINT FIVE MILLION DOLLAR HIT TO THE UM THE GENERAL FUND AT THE END OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR? YES, THERE WILL BE ON THE LINE GRAPH, IT SHOWS A LITTLE BIT MORE CONSISTENTLY.
SO REALLY THE NINE POINT FOUR IS THE AMOUNT THAT WE BUDGETED.
AND SO AS OF SEPTEMBER, WE'RE STILL WITHOUT ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
WE'RE STILL KIND OF AT THAT EXPECTATION.
SOME OF THAT NINE POINT FOUR, FOR INSTANCE, IS SOME OF THOSE ASSIGNED OR RESERVED CATEGORIES GOING BACK DOWN.
AND THEN WE'LL BE ABLE TO ASSESS THE THE IMPACT ON THE UNASSIGNED PORTION.
SO I THINK IF WE WANT TO FLIP TO THE GRAPH, WHICH IS, I THINK, TWO PAGES.
THINK YOU CAN GO TO ANOTHER SLIDE NEXT SLIDE, THANK YOU.
SO THIS IS KIND OF A GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION.
UM, WE WILL COME DOWN SLIGHTLY IN OCTOBER FROM WHERE WE WERE LAST YEAR.
SO THIS SEPTEMBER, WE'RE ALMOST IDENTICAL TO LAST YEAR, LOOKED AHEAD INTO OCTOBER AND WE DO COME DOWN JUST A LITTLE BIT.
SO I WILL REVISE THE GRAPH AGAIN FOR OCTOBER, BUT WE'RE STILL SHOOTING FOR JUST UNDER TWENTY ONE MILLION AT THE END OF THE YEAR.
AND THAT WILL CONTINUE TO BE REFINED AS WE GET ADDITIONAL MONTHS INFORMATION.
OK, SO THIS OUR ENROLLMENT WAS DOWN QUITE A BIT IN SEPTEMBER FROM EXPECTATIONS, I AM HAPPY TO REPORT THAT LEAKED AHEAD TO NOVEMBER ENROLLMENT AND WE ARE ONLY TWENTY NINE DOWN FROM WHERE WE WERE IN LAST NOVEMBER.
[01:40:03]
SO SEPTEMBER WAS NOT A GREAT MONTH.OCTOBER PICKS BACK UP AND THEN NOVEMBER LIKE I SAID, WE'RE COMING IN ABOUT 29 SHY OF WHERE WE WERE A YEAR AGO, SO I HAVE HOPES THAT IT'LL BE MORE CONSISTENT WITH THE TREND LINE, THE AVERAGE TREND LINE FOR LAST YEAR.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN, WE'RE IN LINE WITH THAT RED LINE? YES.
SO THE BLUE LINE IS THIS YEAR IN SEPTEMBER WAS QUITE A BIT DOWN FROM LAST OCTOBER.
BUT BY NOVEMBER, IT SHOULD GET CLOSER.
THE BLUE LINE WILL GET PICKED PICKING UP.
SO YOU'RE SAYING THAT WE HAD A JOB AND NOW WE'RE CLOSE TO WHAT WE WERE LAST YEAR.
AND ARE WE FOLLOWING? SO WHAT I'VE HEARD ON A BROADER LEVEL IS THAT OUR HIGH SCHOOL ENROLLMENT IS PRETTY CLOSE TO NORMAL.
WELL, BROADLY SPEAKING AND THAT IT'S THE EARLIER GRADES THAT.
IS THAT THE CASE FOR EDMONDS? THAT WAS DEFINITELY THE CASE FOR SEPTEMBER, AND THEN I'D BE HAPPY TO DO ANOTHER ANALYSIS TO SEE NOVEMBER.
BUT THAT'S WHAT WE SAW IN SEPTEMBER.
THESE ARE THE REGULAR MONTHLY BUDGET STATUS, THE ONLY THING I WANT TO POINT OUT IS IN FEDERAL SPECIAL PURPOSE, WHICH IS TOWARDS THE TOP OF THE PAGE IN THE MIDDLE COLUMN, YOU'LL SEE A NEGATIVE.
SO WHEN WE SPEND FEDERAL FUNDS, WE CLAIM THEM THE NEXT MONTH.
SO IN SEPTEMBER, WE GET AUGUST REVENUES.
WE MOVE THEM BACK TO THE TWENTY TWENTY ONE SCHOOL YEAR.
AND SO TWENTY ONE, TWENTY TWO SCHOOL YEAR LOOKS LIKE THERE'S SOMETHING WRONG.
BUT AGAIN, IT'S JUST AN ACCOUNTING MECHANISM TO TRUE UP LAST YEAR AND IN NEXT AUGUST, YOU'LL SEE A LARGER AMOUNT THAN NORMAL BECAUSE NEXT AUGUST WILL PICK UP BOTH JULY AND AUGUST REIMBURSEMENTS FROM THE OSPI FLOWING THROUGH THE FEDERAL FUNDS.
SO THAT IS NOTHING TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT.
IT'S TYPICAL FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR.
USUALLY SOME ACCOUNTING ADJUSTMENTS MADE TO RECOGNIZE REVENUES OR EXPENSES IN THE CORRECT YEAR, WHICH WOULD BE LAST YEAR.
AND THEN THOSE WILL TRUE UP AFTER OCTOBER.
AND AGAIN, I WASN'T PLANNING ON GOING THROUGH 80 PAGES OF THE ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORT, THOSE WILL BE SUBJECT TO AUDIT PROBABLY JANUARY OR FEBRUARY, HOPEFULLY GET A REPORT EARLIER THIS YEAR.
AND THEN BUT AGAIN, THE AUGUST REPORT IS THE HIGH LEVEL SUMMARY.
SO THIS WILL BE THE LONGEST BOARD REPORT FOR THE YEAR UNTIL NEXT YEAR.
LYDIA, IT'S ANN, SO I'M WONDERING IF WE'RE NEEDING TO FRONTLOAD HIGHER DOLLAR AMOUNTS FOR FEDERAL REIMBURSEMENT LATER ON.
HOW ARE WE DOING WITH THE AMOUNT IN OUR GENERAL FUND? ARE WE? I'M JUST CONCERNED.
I MEAN, WE'VE GOT ENOUGH TO CAUSE WE'RE HAVING TO FRONT LOAD QUITE A BIT BEFORE WE GET THE MONEY BACK AND WITH THAT PAYROLL, FRONTLOADING PAYROLL AND DOING STUFF.
I'M JUST WONDERING HOW HOW HOW IS THAT FOR POINT? YOU KNOW, SEVEN, TWO OR WHATEVER PERCENT.
HOW IS THAT GOING? SO THE THING ABOUT SO YOU SPEND IN ONE MONTH AND GET REIMBURSED THE FOLLOWING MONTH.
SO IT IT LOOKS ODD AT THE END OF THE YEAR BECAUSE OF HAVING TO CUT IT OFF.
BUT WE ACTUALLY RECEIVE ONE MONTH'S FEDERAL REIMBURSEMENT EVERY MONTH.
IT'S YOU KIND OF FLOW A MONTH BEHIND, BUT YOU'RE STILL RECEIVING A MONTH'S WORTH OF FEDERAL REIMBURSEMENT, SO IF IT'S A BRAND NEW GRANT.
POSSIBLY IT COULD SLOW YOU DOWN, BUT THESE ARE KIND OF ONGOING NOW, SO OUR CASH FLOWS IS FINE AND AGAIN, THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHARE OF THE REVENUE PIE IS, YOU KNOW,
[01:45:03]
WAS AT A HIGH OF SEVEN PERCENT REALLY FOR CASH FLOW, WE'RE RELYING ON THOSE STATE APPORTIONMENT.SORRY ABOUT THAT, SO THE AND YOU HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT, IN OTHER WORDS, THE FLOW THROUGH THE FLOW THROUGH OF THE FEDERAL MONEY, SO THE MONEY THE FEDERAL MONEY GOES TO OSPI? THEN WE SUBMIT OUR BILLS OR WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT THAT TO OSB? .
AND THEY THEN PAY OUT OF THE THIS BUNCH OF MONEY THAT THEY'VE KIND.
THEY'RE HOLDING FOR US THAT THE FEDS HAVE HAVE PAID.
I'M ASSUMING THEY'RE THE THE STATE, THE AUTHORIZED STATE AGENCY TO BE THE HOLDING ENTITY FOR THAT MONEY.
OK, AND WE HAVEN'T HAD ANY PROBLEM WITH THEM BEING TIMELY WITH THEIR REIMBURSEMENTS.
SO THEY PAY THE FEDERAL REIMBURSEMENT OF THE PREVIOUS MONTH'S EXPENDITURES AT THE SAME TIME, THEY PAY OUR MONTHLY STATE GENERAL PURPOSE AND SPECIAL PURPOSE.
SO IT'S USUALLY THE 20TH TO THE 25TH OF EVERY MONTH LIKE CLOCKWORK SO.
I JUST WONDER IF THEY'RE MAKING ANY INTEREST ON THE SIDE WHILE THEY'RE HOLDING OUR MONEY.
I'M SURE THEY ARE, YOU KNOW, BUT I'M JUST WONDERING BECAUSE IT'S LIKE A LOT OF MONEY, IT'S A CHUNK OF CHANGE.
I WAS CURIOUS ABOUT SO THE I SAW ABOUT ONE POINT TWENTY FIVE MILLION FOR LEARNING LOSS, AND I GUESS MOST OF THAT WAS FOR SUMMER SCHOOL? BETWEEN SUMMER SCHOOL AND REMEMBER, WE FOR THE OLDER STUDENTS, THE NINE THROUGH 12 WE CONTRACTED WITH GRADUATION ALLIANCE FOR CREDIT RETRIEVAL.
SO WHAT? SO WHAT? WHAT ARE SUMMER SCHOOL COSTS JUST THEN APPROXIMATE, YOU KNOW? LIKE A MILLION.
I THINK GRADUATION ALLIANCE WAS HIGHER IF IT WAS 1.25, I THINK THEY TOOK MORE THAN OR SUSPENDED MORE THAN 250000.
BUT LET ME GET THAT INFORMATION FOR YOU.
I WAS JUST CURIOUS BECAUSE I DIDN'T WELL, I DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO TOUR THE ELEMENTARY SUMMER SCHOOL.
I DID LOOK AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AND IT SEEMED LIKE SUCH A GREAT INVESTMENT THAT I WOULD HOPE SOMEHOW WE COULD WORK INTO FUTURE PLANS IF POSSIBLE.
SO I WAS CURIOUS ABOUT WHAT KIND OF INVESTMENT THAT WOULD BE.
IT JUST SEEMED LIKE A GREAT MODEL TO GET THE KIDS TOGETHER.
YOU KNOW, INSTEAD OF WORKING ON THEIR CREDIT RETRIEVAL ALL BY THEMSELVES, THEY GOT TOGETHER TO WORK ON IT AND IT SEEMED PRETTY EFFECTIVE.
SO JUST SORT OF SPEAKING OUT LOUD THAT I HOPE WE CAN DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT IN THE FUTURE.
AND I'LL PUT A PLUG IN CASE YOU HEAR FROM THE LEGISLATURE OR OSPI THAT WE'RE NOT SPENDING ESSER FUNDS QUICKLY ENOUGH.
WE RECEIVED THE 20 PERCENT OF OUR THREE IS FOR, YOU KNOW, EXTENDED LEARNING SUMMER SCHOOL, AND THERE IS SUFFICIENT MONEY THAT WE'RE HOPING TO FUND NEXT SUMMER AND SUMMER 2023 BECAUSE THE FUNDS DON'T EXPIRE UNTIL 2024.
SO IF WE AND WE CAN ALSO UTILIZE SOME OF THE 80 PERCENT OF ESSER THREE FOR MORE EXTENDED LEARNING IF WE CHOOSE TO DO SO.
SO THAT THAT WAS OUR PLAN ALL ALONG IS TO CONTINUE THESE SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES AS LONG AS AS LONG AS WE CAN.
AND SO WE HAVE OUR AMOUNT, THOUGH, IT'S NOT LIKE EVERYBODY'S RACING TO SPEND THE MONEY.
OURS IS SPECIFICALLY FOR EDMONDS AND WE RECEIVED THE GRANT AWARD QUITE SOME TIME AGO.
AND LIKE I SAID, WE HAVE TO SPEND IT BY AUGUST 31ST, 2024, SO WE HAVE SOME TIME TO PLAN ON SUMMER ACTIVITIES.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? AND STUDENTS, IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS, FEEL FREE TO STEP IN.
[01:50:05]
OK.I THOUGHT I WOULD NEVER DO THAT AGAIN.
[12. UNFINISHED BUSINESS-8:30 pm]
WE HAVE ONE ITEM UNDER UNFINISHED BUSINESS, WHICH IS A SECOND READING TO ADOPT THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT 2021 TO 2026 STRATEGIC PLAN.IS THERE A MOTION? I MOVED TO APPROVE.
IT'S BEEN MOVED AND SECONDED TO ADOPT THE STRATEGIC PLAN.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? I WANTED TO LOOK A LITTLE CLOSER TOGETHER AT A PART OF THE STRATEGIC PLAN IN RESPONSE TO JAN CHANG'S COMMENT, BECAUSE I WAS SURPRISED WHEN SHE SAID IT, BECAUSE I FEEL THAT WE DO HAVE IT ADDRESSED IN THE STRATEGIC PLAN.
SO I WANTED TO JUST POINT IT OUT AND AND CLARIFY MY UNDERSTANDING OF WHY I THINK IT'S RESPONSIVE TO HER CONCERNS.
AND SO THAT STAFF STRATEGY 2.2 WHICH IS SPECIFIC THAT WE'RE GOING TO DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT A PLAN TO RECRUIT, HIRE, RETAIN AND SUPPORT STAFF MEMBERS OF COLOR.
SO I SEE IN OUR STRATEGIC PLAN THAT WE'RE DOING MORE THAN JUST RECRUITING AND HIRING, BUT WE DEFINITELY ALSO WANT TO SUPPORT THEM.
AND UNDER SOME OF THE KEY PRACTICES I THINK WE HAVE AT A HIGHER LEVEL THE WAY DR.
THE KEY PIECES THAT WE NEED UNDER WHICH WE WOULD BE DOING SPECIFIC ACTIONS.
BUT IT INCLUDES MENTORING, AND I THINK IT'S JUST AS IT BECOMES MORE DEFINED.
YOU KNOW, WORK TOGETHER AND BE ASSURED THAT IT IS DEFINITELY PROMOTING A SENSE OF BELONGING AND SUPPORT FOR THE TEACHERS AND THE STAFF, THE STAFF OF COLOR.
BUT I FEEL LIKE IT'S IN HERE AND NOT LOST, IT'S SIMPLY THAT THE SPECIFICS WOULD COME OUT MORE CONCRETELY IN THE DIRECTION OF HOW JANN DESCRIBED THE NEEDS AS THE NETWORK SEES IT.
TO WHEN WE DO THE ACTION PLAN.
SO I DON'T KNOW IF OTHERS SEE THAT AS WELL, BUT I JUST WANTED TO SORT OF CLARIFY MY UNDERSTANDING BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE THERE IS A PLACE HERE THAT ADDRESSES THAT NEED.
I THINK THAT, NANCY, I KIND OF LIKE IN ALIGNMENT WITH YOU ON THINKING ABOUT THIS AND SOME OF THE WAY I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THE STRATEGIC PLAN BECAUSE THERE ARE SPECIFIC ACTIONS THAT THAT ARE NOT YET ADDRESSED, BUT I WAS REMINDING MYSELF THAT THIS IS A LIVE WORKING DOCUMENT AND WE DO NEED TO HAVE, YOU KNOW, SPECIFIC ACTION PLANS PUT IN PLACE.
AND SO IF IT'S NOT ADEQUATE, THEN I THINK THAT WE CAN GET ADDITIONAL INPUT.
BUT IT SEEMS THAT WE ARE BEGINNING TO ADDRESS HERE IN THIS DOCUMENT AS A HIGH LEVEL OVERVIEW BECAUSE I HAD SOME CONCERNS ABOUT MAKING SURE THAT WE'RE KIND OF CENTERING CULTURAL COMPETENCY.
AND, YOU KNOW, TALKING ABOUT, YOU KNOW, MORE SPECIFICS ON WHAT DR.
BALDERAS HAD MENTIONED EARLIER ON THE MAGNET PROGRAMS AND THE CTE AND THAT TYPE OF THING.
I'M LOOKING AT THIS AS THE BROADER OVERVIEW AND THINKING ABOUT WE HAVEN'T HAD A LOT OF LONG TERM GOALS IN THE DISTRICT FOR A WHILE, SO SO I GUESS WHAT I'M SAYING RIGHT RIGHT NOW IS IS I SEE THAT WE'RE ADDRESSING IT.
[01:55:01]
I THINK THAT BY NO MEANS ARE WE DONE WE THIS IS AS WAS MENTIONED, IT'S A LIVING DOCUMENT, IT'S A WORKING DOCUMENT AND THERE'S MORE WORK TO BE DONE.AND THIS IS THE FIRST HIGH LEVEL.
AND THAT'S I ACTUALLY WANTED TO CHECK IN WITH OUR OTHER DIRECTORS ON THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THIS ALSO.
THAT'S DEFINITELY MY UNDERSTANDING.
AND SO AS WE'RE DOING THIS TOO, YOU KNOW, SINCE THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WE HAVEN'T HAD FOR A WHILE DEVELOPING TRUST WITH THE FOLKS THAT ARE GOING TO BE IMPACTED WITH THIS AND ALL THOSE FOLKS THAT HAVE PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE, I KNOW WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING OUTREACH AND COLLABORATION.
AND THEN AND I'M NOT SURE IF WE HAVE A TIMELINE YET ON THAT OR WHAT THE PROCESS IS, BUT I KNOW THAT WE WILL HAVE ONE.
AND SO I'M WILLING TO DEFINITELY SUPPORT THE WORK THAT'S GONE INTO THE STRATEGIC PLAN WITH THAT UNDERSTANDING THAT WE WE'RE NOT DONE.
YEAH THIS IS ANN I TOTALLY AGREE, CARIN, BECAUSE IT'S I JUST THINK IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO COME UP WITH A DOCUMENT IN A MOMENT IN TIME THAT THEN IF IT REMAINS JUST THE WAY IT IS, IS JUST IS APPLICABLE ALL THE WAY THROUGH.
I THINK WHAT WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN IS SOME OF THESE, FOR EXAMPLE, THE KEY PRACTICES.
YOU KNOW, YOUR BEST INTENTION IS THAT THESE THINGS ARE GOING TO WORK, BUT WHEN YOU ACTUALLY IMPLEMENT THEM, MAYBE THEY DON'T WORK AS WELL AS YOU THOUGHT, OR MAYBE THEY REALLY WORK WONDERFULLY.
AND AND SO YOU TAKE THE BASIC STRUCTURE AND THEN APPLY THEM TO OTHER AREAS.
SO I REALLY HOPE THAT THAT WHAT THAT THIS DOCUMENT BECOMES KIND OF THE UNIVERSAL DESIGN STANDARDS.
IF YOU WANT TO CALL THAT FOR THE ACADEMIC WORK OF THE DISTRICT, THAT'S UNIVERSAL DESIGN STANDARDS IS HOW CAPITAL PROJECTS TAKES THE COLLECTIVE WISDOM OF BUILDING BUILDINGS AND FACILITIES STRUCTURES AND MAKE SURE THAT LESSONS LEARNED ARE CONSTANTLY BEING INCORPORATED INTO THAT.
AND SO I LOOK AT THIS DOCUMENT AS SOMETHING THAT IS GOING TO CONTINUALLY BE MODIFIED WITH LESSONS LEARNED.
AND SO I THINK THAT GIVEN GIVEN WHAT IS IN HERE, IT'S A GREAT START.
IT GIVES THE DISTRICT A PLAN TO WORK ON.
AND THEN I FULLY EXPECT THE CREATIVE GENIUS OF THE COLLECTIVE STAFF OF THE DISTRICT TO CONTINUALLY IMPROVE AND MAKE THIS DOCUMENT BETTER.
ANN, I GOT TO SAY, WE'RE GOING TO MISS YOU A LOT.
YOU KNOW, YOU JUST DESCRIBED THINGS VERY WELL AS TO WHAT'S IMPORTANT AND TO SORT OF PIGGYBACK ON WHAT YOU'RE SAYING.
I THINK A VERY KEY PIECE IS CONTINUOUS EVALUATION, SO THAT OF THE KEY PRACTICES AND THE STRATEGIES THAT WE'RE TAKING.
SO AS YOU SAY, THE ONLY WAY WE'RE GOING TO REALLY BE ABLE TO DO THE ONGOING EVOLUTION OF THIS OVER TIME AND USE LESSONS LEARNED IS BY DOING GOOD QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE EVALUATION ON A REGULAR BASIS TO TO KEEP TRACK.
AND I I JUST WANTED TO MENTION SO DEBORAH TALKED ABOUT HAVING BEEN AT WSSDA AND I ATTENDED WSSDA REMOTELY AND THERE WERE SOME REALLY INTERESTING SUGGESTIONS AND ONE OF THEM, AND I THINK THIS IS JUST SOMETHING WE CAN THINK ABOUT AS A BOARD BUT ONE OF THEM WAS THAT ON EVERY AGENDA ITEM, ON EVERY MOTION THAT WE'RE VOTING ON OR PROPOSAL ON OUR BOARD AGENDAS TO PUT THE NOTATION FROM THE STRATEGIC PLAN ON THERE.
SO IT'S CLEAR TO US AND TO THE PUBLIC WHY WE'RE DOING WHAT WE'RE DOING, WHERE IT FITS INTO OUR STRATEGIC PLAN.
AND AS WE THINK ABOUT ALWAYS KEEPING OUR BUDGET AND PRIORITIES IN ALIGNMENT WITH OUR GOALS.
THAT'S A WAY THAT COULD HELP US SORT OF MONITOR AND KEEP THAT FRESH AND IN FRONT OF US ANYWAY.
I THOUGHT IT WAS A COOL IDEA, SO I THOUGHT I WOULD MENTION THAT AS WELL.
IT'S, YOU KNOW, WHEN IT COMES TO THE STRATEGIC PLAN TO IMPROVE IT, YOU HAVE TO USE IT.
IT'S NOT JUST SOMETHING TO PUT ON A SHELF.
SO THEN, DO WE HAVE THOUGHTS ON DO WE HAVE ANY GENERAL BROAD STROKES OF NEXT STEPS OR TIMELINE ON THIS? YES, THE NEXT STEPS TO WORK WITH STAFF ON THE PRIORITIES FROM THE STAFF RECOMMENDATION OF WORK THROUGH THE BOARD ON YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS IN TERMS OF WHAT WE'RE DOING THIS YEAR.
AGAIN, REMINDER WE'RE STILL IN COVID AND TRYING TO STEP UP.
SO THIS IS GOING TO BE A SLOW ROLLOUT.
[02:00:02]
THIS IS KIND OF A SOFT, A SOFT ROLLOUT AS WE GET, BUT TO ENSURE THAT WHAT WE'RE DOING HERE ONE, TWO AND THREE AND FOUR, BASED ON OUR OVERALL STRATEGY TO IMPROVE STUDENT AND STAFF STUDENT PERFORMANCE, BUT ALSO STAFF SATISFACTION TO SOME LEVEL IN TERMS OF WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE AND FEEL LIKE IN THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT.BUT OUR NUMBER ONE GOAL IS REALLY TO TO CONTINUE TO DO WHAT, TO PROVIDE THE BEST EDUCATIONAL SERVICES WE CAN FOR OUR FAMILIES AND KIDS.
AND THAT'S HOW DO WE DO IT IN YEAR ONE, TWO AND THREE AND FOUR AS WELL AS AGAIN, THIS IS GOING TO BE AN ALL ENCOMPASSING PLAN.
SO WHAT'S MISSING HERE? MAYBE.
OR SOME OF THE CAPITAL PROJECTS, FOR EXAMPLE, THE BOND THAT WE HAVE COMING UP PRETTY QUICK.
WE HAVE ANOTHER LEVY COMING, ANOTHER LEVY, COMING UP HERE PRETTY QUICK.
SO THERE'S A LOT OF ACTION ITEMS THAT NEED TO BE SPELLED OUT TO ENSURE THAT THE BOARD UNDERSTANDS WHAT WE'RE DOING THIS YEAR AND WHAT WE'RE DOING NEXT YEAR IN THE YEAR OUT.
SO THAT'S SOMETHING THAT I HOPE TO GET TO THE BOARD HERE.
MY MY HOPE IN BROAD STROKES IS TO TRY AND GET SOME KIND OF DRAFT TO THE BOARD IN DECEMBER, SO YOU CAN KIND OF REVIEW IT OVER BREAK AND THEN COME BACK IN JANUARY TO KIND OF TALK ABOUT IT FURTHER.
AND PUSHING STAFF, SO THAT'S SOMETHING BUT IT'S OK.
NO, NO, NO, NO, WE'LL GET, BUT AGAIN, BUT I APPRECIATE THE COMMENTS BEING MADE THAT THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS.
SO IF WE CONTINUE TO CONTINUE JUST TO HAVE THE CONVERSATION IN TERMS OF THE PRIORITIES OF THE SYSTEM AND IT IS A WORK IN PROGRESS, THIS IS NOT GOING TO END.
AND AGAIN, THERE'S GOING TO BE SHIFTING BASED ON WHAT THE SITUATION THAT DO OCCUR.
FOR EXAMPLE, IF WE WERE TO ADOPT A STRATEGIC PLAN IN JANUARY 2020, IT WOULD HAVE CHANGED BY, BY, BY LATE MARCH, RIGHT? SO IT JUST WHAT IT IS.
SO IT'S GOING TO CONTINUE TO BE AMORPHOUS, BUT AS THE BOARD'S BEEN STATING.
I JUST REALLY APPRECIATE THE WORK THAT'S GONE INTO IT SO FAR, AND ESPECIALLY IT'S ALREADY BEEN VERY HELPFUL TO ME IN TERMS OF HAVING A FRAMEWORK, HAVING A SET OF GOALS THAT I CAN AT LEAST SPEAK TO OR THINK ABOUT WHAT WE'RE DOING IN LIGHT OF.
AND I RECOGNIZE THAT SPECIFIC ACTION PLANS WILL COME LATER, BUT THEY'LL BE GUIDED BY THIS SET OF GOALS THAT I THINK ARE PRETTY GOOD.
OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS ? OK, I'LL CALL FOR A VOTE ON THE APPROVAL OF THE 2021 TO 2026 STRATEGIC PLAN FOR EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT.
IS THERE, COULD I HAVE A ROLL CALL VOTE PLEASE? DIRECTOR MCMURRAY, AYE.
THE MOTION PASSES AND THE STRATEGIC PLAN IS APPROVED.
WE WILL NOW RECESS THE REGULAR MEETING AND OPEN A PUBLIC HEARING TO ASSESS
[13. PUBLIC HEARING]
ACCEPT TESTIMONY REGARDING THE INTENT TO LEASE REAL PROPERTY.TONIGHT'S PUBLIC HEARING IS FOR THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS TO ACCEPT TESTIMONY REGARDING THE INTENT TO LEASE PROPERTY TO HOUSING HOPE FOR SEVENTY FIVE YEARS TO PROVIDE AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT STUDENTS AND FAMILIES.
THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE PUBLIC TO PROVIDE TESTIMONY.
WE'VE HAD SOME WRITTEN TESTIMONY.
I MEAN, I KNOW THAT THE BOARD HAS READ IT, HAS READ THE COMMENTS, BUT IT WILL BE ATTACHED TO THE PUBLIC RECORD.
AND WE ONLY HAVE ONE SPEAKER, I BELIEVE, WHO WANTS TO SPEAK UM ON THE ISSUE, AND THAT IS AH FRED SJĆĀ¶STRĆĀ¶M FROM HOUSING HOPE.
WELL, THEN I'M GOING TO GO AHEAD AND CLOSE THE PUBLIC HEARING, SEEING, THAT THERE ARE NO FURTHER MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC WHO WISH TO TESTIFY CONCERNING THIS MATTER.
THE PUBLIC HEARING IS NOW FORMALLY CLOSED.
[02:05:04]
AND JUST TO INFORM THE PUBLIC THAT THE BOARD WILL BE TALKING ABOUT THIS VERY SHORTLY AS WE DO A FIRST READING ON THE RESOLUTION TO ACCEPT THIS GROUND LEASE.AND I CALL THE MEETING BACK TO ORDER OUR GENERAL BUSINESS MEETING.
[14. NEW BUSINESS 8:45 pm]
NEXT, WE HAVE A COUPLE OF ITEMS OF NEW BUSINESS.OUR FIRST ITEM IS TO SELECT OUR PRO CON COMMITTEE MEMBERS AND THIS IS FOR THE LEVY.
WE HAVE TO SELECT PEOPLE TO WRITE THE PRO AND THE CON ARGUMENT IN THE VOTER PAMPHLET ON THE LEVY, WHICH IS THE ELECTION IS COMING UP IN FEBRUARY.
LYDIA, ARE YOU IN CHARGE OF THAT? OK, TAKE IT AWAY.
SO THE BOARD IS AUTHORIZED TO ELECT UP TO THREE CANDIDATES FOR EACH OF THE PRO AND CON STATEMENTS.
WE HAVE LESS THAN THREE CANDIDATES FOR EACH.
SO IF CHERELLE, IF YOU COULD CLICK ON THE ACTUAL PRO CON APPLICANTS.
AND SO WE HAVE FOR THE PRO COMMITTEE, CORY DEMOND AND SUE PHILLIPS HAVE APPLIED TO BE ON THE PRO COMMITTEE AND JEFF HECKATHORN AS APPLIED TO BE ON THE COMMITTEE.
IF THE BOARD APPOINTS THESE THREE INDIVIDUALS, THEY WILL RECEIVE A DOCUSIGN TOMORROW, INDICATING THEIR ACKNOWLEDGMENT THAT THEY HAVE BEEN PLACED ON THESE COMMITTEES.
AND I WILL FORWARD THAT TO SNOHOMISH COUNTY AND SNOHOMISH COUNTY IS THE RESPONSIBLE PARTY TO REACH OUT TO THESE INDIVIDUALS TO PREPARE THE STATEMENT.
SO AFTER APPOINTMENT, OUR WORK IS DONE.
THIS IS AN AWKWARD POSITION TO BE IN, WOULD A MOTION TO APPROVE THE APPOINTMENT, THE COMMITTEE APPLICANTS BE IN ORDER, MADAM CHAIR? SOUNDS GOOD.
YEAH, I MOVE THAT WE ACCEPT A PRO CON COMMITTEE APPLICANTS AS PRESENTED ON THE SCREEN AS OUR REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE AUTHORIZED BY THE EDMOND SCHOOL BOARD.
IT'S BEEN MOVED AND SECONDED TO ACCEPT THAT COMMITTEE APPLICANTS AS WRITTEN.
HEARING NONE, I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE, PLEASE.
THE MOTION PASSES AND THE BOARD APPROVES THESE APPLICANTS FOR THE PRO AND CON COMMITTEE.
OUR NEXT ITEM IS A FIRST READING WITH NO ACTION TO CONSIDER RESOLUTION 21-2, THE GROUND LEASE AND SURPLUS FOR THE LAND FOR HOUSING HOPE.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? THIS IS CARIN, I AM VERY EXCITED TO MOVE THIS PROJECT FORWARD BECAUSE AS WE KNOW WHEN FAMILIES ARE HOUSED, THEY HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO THRIVE AND LIVE UP TO THEIR FULL POTENTIAL, AND THEY'RE REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO HAVING THIS SUPPORT AND SO GRATEFUL THAT WE HAVE THIS OPPORTUNITY IN THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT TO HELP OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT FAMILIES.
SO I'M GOING TO BE WHEN IT'S APPROPRIATE, VOTING IN SUPPORT OF THIS.
I WANTED TO FOLLOW UP JUST A LITTLE BIT WITH SOME OF THE COMMENTS THAT WE RECEIVED FROM THE PUBLIC BECAUSE I THOUGHT THERE MIGHT BE SOME CONFUSION.
FIRST OF ALL, THAT THIS IS, THIS IS NOT A SHELTER, THIS IS PERMANENT HOUSING, IT'S AFFORDABLE HOUSING THAT WOULD BE BUILT HERE.
AND SO IT'S NOT IT'S NOT AN ENCAMPMENT, CERTAINLY.
AND IT'S NOT A IT'S NOT A SHELTER.
I JUST WANTED TO ALSO ADDRESS A FEW OTHER POINTS.
FIRST OF ALL, WE DO HAVE AT LAST COUNT, WE HAD ABOUT FOUR HUNDRED HOMELESS KIDS EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS IN OUR DISTRICT THAT WE KNOW OF.
WE SUSPECT THAT THERE MAY BE MANY MORE, BUT COVID HAS MADE IT DIFFICULT TO KEEP
[02:10:09]
TRACK TO THAT EXTENT.AND AS A BOARD AND AS A DISTRICT, WE'RE LEGALLY OBLIGATED TO EDUCATE THOSE KIDS JUST THE SAME AS WE EDUCATE ANY OF OUR KIDS.
AND IN A FORMER LIFE, I USED TO DO COST BENEFITS ANALYSIS, AND SO SOME OF THE CONCERNS THAT CAME OUR WAY HAD TO DO WITH, IS THIS A GOOD USE OF OUR RESOURCES? AND I FEEL THAT IT IS VERY MUCH MAKES IT MAKES THE CASE THAT, YOU KNOW, WHEN THERE'S ONE KID IN A CLASSROOM WHO IS SUFFERING THE THE STRESS IS HUNGRY, IS IS WORRIED THAT KID CAN TAKE UP A LOT OF THE TEACHER'S TIME JUST TO GET THE CHILD TO THE POINT WHERE WHERE THEY'RE READY TO LEARN.
AND SO EVERYONE IN THE CLASSROOM PAYS.
IF THE TEACHER'S TIME IS TAKEN UP, AS IT SHOULD BE WITH WITH OUR MOST VULNERABLE KIDS, IT ALSO COSTS THE DISTRICT A LOT TO HAVE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT STAFF IN PLACE TO HELP STUDENTS WHO DON'T HAVE A ROOF OVER THEIR HEADS.
AND AS DIRECTOR CHASE SAID, IT'S THE NUMBER ONE THING WE CAN DO TO HELP THESE KIDS IS TO HELP THEM GET INTO STABLE HOUSING.
ANOTHER EXTRAORDINARY EXPENSE THAT THE DISTRICT HAS IS THAT WE'RE LEGALLY OBLIGATED TO PROVIDE TRANSPORTATION FOR STUDENTS EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS SO WHEN THEY LEAVE THE DISTRICT.
SO IF THEY'RE COUCH SURFING FAR AWAY, WE STILL HAVE TO GIVE THEM A RIDE TO SCHOOL, AND WE KNOW THAT THAT'S A SIGNIFICANT LINE ITEM IN OUR BUDGET.
SO I BELIEVE THAT IF WE DID THIS KIND OF ANALYSIS, WE WOULD FIND THAT THIS IS A REAL COST SAVINGS FOR THE DISTRICT.
IF WE ARE TO HELP OUR MOST VULNERABLE KIDS.
AND SO FOR THOSE TAXPAYERS WHO ARE WORRIED ABOUT THIS, I THINK YOU'LL SEE THAT WE HAVE A NICE RETURN ON INVESTMENT IN THE LONG RUN.
THERE WERE THERE WAS AT LEAST ONE CONCERN ABOUT GETTING RID OF A BALL FIELD.
AND AS A PARENT, YOU KNOW, AS A SPORTS MOM, I'M WITH YOU.
I, YOU KNOW, I SPENT A LONG TIME WITH MY KIDS.
THERE WERE, YOU KNOW, IT WAS ALWAYS HARD TO FIND A FIELD TO PLAY ON.
BUT AT THE SAME TIME, OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS, WE'VE OUR COMMUNITIES HAVE DONE A LOT TO INCREASE OUR FIELD SPACE.
WE HAVE NEW FACILITIES AT MEADOWDALE PLAY FIELDS AT EDMONDS HEIGHTS.
WE HAVE A NEW TURF FIELD AT MOUNT LAYNE TERRACE JUST OPENED UP TWO BEAUTIFUL NEW FIELDS.
AND I KNOW I'M MISSING SOME, BUT WE EDMONDS WOODWAY WAS RECENTLY RENOVATED AND ADDITIONAL PRACTICE FIELDS WERE INCLUDED, SO I DON'T FEEL THE SAME WORRY ABOUT A LACK OF PLAYING FIELDS FOR THE KIDS.
AND YOU KNOW, AND AND SO FINALLY, THE CONSTITUENTS WHO ARE WORRIED ABOUT WHAT THIS DEVELOPMENT WILL BE LIKE, YOU KNOW, AS I SAID, IT'S NOT A SHELTER.
IT'S REAL HOUSING FOR REAL EDMONDS FAMILIES.
AND YOU KNOW, WE HAVE DONE THE BOARD HAS DONE A LOT OF WORK TO MAKE SURE THAT THIS WILL SERVE OUR DISTRICT KIDS FIRST, AND I'M SATISFIED THAT IT'S GOING TO BE A BRIGHT SPOT IN OUR COMMUNITY.
IT'S WELL SITUATED NEAR ONE OF OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, AND I THINK WE'RE GOING TO SEE A LOT OF POSITIVE SYNERGY BETWEEN THE SCHOOL AND THE APARTMENT CAMPUSES.
AND IN JUST A FEW YEARS, I THINK I'M I'M VERY I'M CONFIDENT THAT THIS IS GOING TO BE A MODEL COMMUNITY SCHOOL FOR THE COUNTRY.
AND SO I HOPE THAT I'VE ADDRESSED SOME OF THOSE ISSUES THAT WERE BROUGHT UP BY SOME OF OUR CONCERNED CONSTITUENTS.
DEBORAH, I'D LIKE TO JUST ADD THAT THE BOARD HAS SPENT LITERALLY HOURS TALKING ABOUT THIS PROJECT IN STUDY SESSIONS AND THAT WE HAVE, I BELIEVE, DONE STRONG DUE DILIGENCE IN MAKING SURE THAT THERE IS NO BETTER USE FOR THIS LAND.
IT'S NOT APPROPRIATE FOR THE SIZE OR ANYTHING ELSE FOR SCHOOL.
[02:15:04]
THE WAY DEBORAH DESCRIBED IT IS EXACTLY WELL SAID IN TERMS OF THE ATHLETIC USE.NOW WE HAVE ACTUALLY MUCH BETTER FIELDS AVAILABLE AT, AT OR OTHER SITES, AND WE HOPE TO HELP SUPPORT THE NEED FOR THOSE ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES THAT HAVE HAPPENED AT THAT FIELD.
WE HAVE ASKED, I THINK EVERY QUESTION POSSIBLE AND DELVED INTO ALL OF THE FINANCIAL, EDUCATIONAL AND SOCIAL ASPECTS OF THIS.
SO I JUST I REALLY WANT THE PUBLIC TO KNOW THAT WE HAVE NOT GONE INTO THIS LIGHTLY AT ALL AND FEEL FULLY SUPPORTIVE THAT THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WILL BE VERY GOOD FOR OUR FAMILIES WHO WILL BE GIVEN HIGH PRIORITY.
THESE WILL BE FAMILIES OF OUR STUDENTS WHO WILL BE IN THE IN THIS HOUSING UNIT.
SO I JUST KIND OF WANTED TO THANK EVERYBODY FOR ALL OF THE COMMENTS, BUT JUST WANT THE PUBLIC TO KNOW.
WE HAVE SPENT A LOT OF TIME TALKING ABOUT THIS PROJECT AND MAKING SURE THAT IT IS A GOOD DECISION.
ANY OTHER DISCUSSION? OK, STAY TUNED, WE'LL HAVE A SECOND READING AT OUR NEXT MEETING.
UP NEXT, WE HAVE BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS, BUT I'D LIKE TO TURN IT TO THE
[16. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS]
STUDENTS FIRST AND HEAR FROM OUR STUDENTS.COULD WE HAVE THE GALLERY VIEW? THANK YOU.
WHO AM I LOOKING AT? WHO'S STUCK WITH US, DANIEL? I SEE YOU, OR I SEE YOUR NAME ANYWAY.
ARE YOU STILL HERE? YEAH, HE'S STILL HERE.
BASED ON TODAY'S MEETING, I REALLY APPRECIATE HOW YOU'RE TRYING TO HELP THE HOMELESSNESS COMMUNITY.
I THINK THAT'S REALLY GOING TO HELP US INDULGE MORE INTO THE EQUITY PART AND ALSO JUST TO GIVE EVERYONE THE CHANCE THAT THEY CAN GET A PROPER HOUSING AND EDUCATION.
AND I WAS TALKING TO SOME OF MY TEACHERS AND FELLOW STUDENTS, AND THEY WERE KIND OF WONDERING LIKE, WE KNOW WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN IF WE HAVE TO QUARANTINE IN CLOSE CONTACT, LIKE GO HOME, CHECK CANVAS TO ALL THAT.
BUT THEY'RE NOT REALLY SURE WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN IF TEACHERS HAVE TO QUARANTINE BECAUSE OF CLOSE CONTACT OR SOMETHING, BECAUSE I KNOW A LOT OF MY TEACHERS ALSO HAVE CHILDREN GOING TO OTHER SCHOOLS AND IN THE DISTRICTS, AND THEY'RE NOT REALLY SURE WHAT TO DO, ESPECIALLY WITH THE SUB SHORTAGE THAT'S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW.
SO MAYBE IF THAT COULD BE MORE COMMUNICATED THOROUGHLY AND WELL, THAT WOULD BE GREAT.
BUT OTHER THAN THAT, I HOPE EVERYONE HAS A GREAT THANKSGIVING BREAK AND THAT WE GET SOME WELL-DESERVED REST.
YES, IT SOUNDS LIKE IN ADDITION TO ALL THE THINGS WE'RE DOING, WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE COMMUNICATE ABOUT QUARANTINE AND WHAT TO DO.
AND YOU KNOW, I JUST WENT THROUGH IT WITH MY SON AND WE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, AND I THINK I SHOULD KNOW.
BUT SO THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENTS ON THAT.
FIRST OF ALL, HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO EVERYONE.
AND ALSO, I HOPE THAT EVERYONE HAS A RESTFUL BREAK BECAUSE IT'S BEEN QUITE, QUITE THE RIDE AND ALSO A HUGE THANKS TO DIRECTOR MCMURRAY.
I CAN'T REALLY IMAGINE HAVING BOARD MEETINGS WITHOUT YOU AND YOUR INSIGHTFUL COMMENTS, AND IT'S JUST BEEN LIKE SUPER FUN AND ALSO JUST REASSURING TO KNOW THAT THERE'S SOMEONE WHO REALLY IS BRINGING SO MUCH INSIGHTFUL AND THOUGHTFUL THINGS TO THE TABLE.
SO THANK YOU FOR ALL THE STUFF YOU'VE DONE FOR THE BOARD.
THE HOMELESSNESS THING, I AM SO EXCITED TO SEE THAT THAT'S ON THE TABLE.
I HAVE BEEN HEARING TALK AROUND THAT FOR SO LONG.
AND I MEAN, THIS IS ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT REALLY NEEDS TO HAPPEN.
THINKING ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE AND BRINGING A HELPING THOSE THAT NEED IT THE MOST EDUCATION IS NOT JUST WHAT HAPPENS IN THE SCHOOL BUILDING, IT'S WHAT HAPPENS OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL BUILDING AS WELL.
AND THE FACT THAT WE'RE ABLE TO SUPPORT SOME OF THESE STUDENTS IN THE WAY THAT THIS PROJECT WOULD IS AMAZING.
THE THING THAT I WANT TO COMMENT ON THAT'S REALLY BEEN ON MY MIND THIS PAST WEEK OR SO IS I GOT A LITTLE BIT OF A I GOT COMMENTS FROM A FELLOW SENIORS THESE LAST COUPLE OF
[02:20:07]
WEEKS REGARDING THE FILTER THAT OUR DISTRICT HAS ON THE SCHOOL ISSUE COMPUTERS, AND THEY RECENTLY UNEARTHED SOME PRETTY DISTURBING THINGS WHEN IT COMES TO GOING ONLINE AND DOING A SIMPLE GOOGLE SEARCH.BASICALLY, THE WHOLE PREMISE WAS THEY WERE LOOKING FOR LGBT RESOURCES AND THEY FOUND A WHOLE LIST THAT THEY CREATED OF LGBT RESOURCES THAT WERE COMPLETELY AND FULLY BLOCKED WHILE THE WESTBORO BAPTIST CHURCH AND OTHER LIKE VERY AN OBVIOUS WHITE SUPREMACIST AND NAZI FLAG WEBSITES WERE CLEARLY UNBLOCKED, WHICH WHEN IT GOES ACROSS THE BOARD, ACROSS MULTIPLE PEOPLE TESTING IT OUT, YOU KNOW, IT'S AN ISSUE.
NEXT WEEK ONCE WE KIND OF GET OFF OF THE BREAK, I'M GOING TO TRY AND SEND THE COMPILED LIST OFF TO DR.
BALDERAS AND MAYBE A COUPLE OF BOARD DIRECTORS.
BUT WE TALK ABOUT THE STRATEGIC PLAN AND THE IDEA THAT WE WANT TO CREATE INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENTS AND WELCOMING ENVIRONMENTS.
AND I MEAN, THIS IS ONE OF THOSE THINGS WHERE WE HAVE TO ACT IN A WAY THAT REALLY SHOWS THAT.
AND YOU KNOW, THE WHOLE CONCEPT OF CENSORSHIP VERSUS NON CENSORSHIP IS A DIFFICULT ONE.
BUT LIKE NONE OF THOSE WEBSITES WITH THAT KIND OF THING SHOULD BE AVAILABLE ON SCHOOL ISSUE COMPUTERS AND THE RESOURCES THAT STUDENTS DO NEED NOT BEING AVAILABLE.
NOT TO MENTION THAT THIS ENTIRE WEEK, LIKE I KNOW, TEACHERS HAVE BEEN WANTING TO TEAR THEIR HAIR OUT, ESPECIALLY AT [INAUDIBLE], BECAUSE A LOT OF THE WEBSITES THAT WE USE ON A DAILY BASIS ARE CONSTANTLY BLOCKED AMONG STUDENTS.
AND IT'S LIKE EVERY SINGLE TIME TRYING TO UNBLOCK INDIVIDUAL WEBSITES THAT ARE CLEARLY LEARNING BASED.
THERE'S SOMETHING GOING WRONG THERE THAT REALLY NEEDS TO GET FIXED, AND I THINK WE NEED TO ACT ON THAT, SO I WILL SEND THAT LIST OVER.
BUT THAT IS SOMETHING THAT HAS COME UP.
BUT OTHERWISE, I HOPE THAT EVERYONE HAS A FANTASTIC BREAK AND THAT WE CAN CONTINUE.
I APPRECIATE THAT, AND I'M SURE THAT THE DISTRICT STAFF WILL FOLLOW UP.
UM, LET'S SEE, LEAH, ARE YOU HERE? YEP, I'M HERE, SO I JUST REALLY WANTED TO GO BACK AND TALK AND MENTION THE LYNNWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WHO CAME AND PRESENTED, I REALLY APPRECIATED HOW THE TEACHERS WERE REALLY ENCOURAGING THE STUDENTS TO REALLY BE INVOLVED IN THEIR READING
[02:25:16]
AND THEIR WRITING AND THEIR ART, ESPECIALLY.I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT AS STUDENTS, WE GET MATERIALS THAT WE'RE INTERESTED WITH AND LIKE VIBE WITH.
AND BECAUSE I REALLY THINK THAT WE LEARN BETTER WHEN WE ARE INTERESTED IN A TOPIC OR IF YOU RELATE TO THE TOPIC, IF THAT MAKES SENSE.
YEAH, I REALLY THINK THAT THIS SHOULD ALSO BE ENCOURAGED ALL THROUGHOUT OUR DISTRICT, FROM VERY YOUNG TO HOW OLD WE GET IN THIS DISTRICT.
I REALLY THINK THAT THIS CAN BE BENEFICIAL TO ALL STUDENTS.
UM, YEAH, I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH AND SUPPORT EVERYTHING THAT LEAH AND RITIKA AND
[02:30:41]
DANIEL SAID.YEAH, I JUST LIKE TO ADD A COUPLE OF COMMENTS ABOUT DEALING WITH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS.
DO I THINK IT WAS GREAT? I MEAN, IT'S VERY ENTERTAINING.
I LOVED WATCHING THE STUDENTS SHARE THEIR INTRODUCTIONS OF THEIR ESSAYS, AND IT'S REALLY GREAT SEEING THEM LIKE LEARNING THESE SKILLS AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE.
AND I'M REALLY NOT SURE THAT I LIKE LEARNED HOW TO WRITE THAT WELL AT THAT AGE.
I MEAN, IT'S REALLY GREAT THAT THEY'RE STARTING YOUNG AND THAT'S REALLY GOING TO HELP THEM IN THE FUTURE.
AND OTHER THAN THAT, I JUST WANT TO THANK ALL THE PRESENTERS AND AGAIN, THE DISTRICT AND ALL STAFF MEMBERS BECAUSE I JUST FEEL LIKE EVERYTHING AT SCHOOL IS GOING PRETTY WELL CONSIDERING THE CIRCUMSTANCES.
AND YEAH HAVE A GREAT THANKSGIVING BREAK, THANKS.
WELL, I THANK YOU VERY MUCH RITIKA, I GUESS I'M GOING TO COME RIGHT BACK AT YOU BECAUSE I WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT RITIKA WAS RECOGNIZED BECAUSE OF THE NATIONAL SCHOLASTIC PRESS ASSOCIATION'S FULL CONVENTION, RITIKA WAS BASICALLY AWARDED SECOND IN THE NATION AND THE EDITORIAL LEADERSHIP CATEGORY.
IT'S JUST A CONTINUATION OF THE EXCELLENCE OF THE [INAUDIBLE] HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM PROGRAM UNDER VINCE D'AMARO.
AND WE, YOU KNOW, I THINK SOMETIMES WE JUST TAKE IT FOR GRANTED HOW WELL THE PROGRAM DOES YEAR AFTER YEAR AFTER YEAR.
BUT RITIKA, YOU HAVE REALLY ELEVATED THE EXCELLENCE OF THE PROGRAM WITH THIS AWARD AND AND I THINK IT JUST HELPED THE UNDERCLASSMEN GET EXCITED ABOUT WHAT COULD HAPPEN AND WHAT THEY CAN DO AND HOW THEY CAN EXCEL.
AND SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR BEING PART OF THE PROGRAM AND FOR JUST BEING DOING WHAT YOU'VE DONE TO BE ABLE TO SHOW SUCH INCREDIBLE LEADERSHIP IN THAT PROGRAM.
AND I'M JUST I'M ALWAYS INTERESTED TO SEE, SADLY, WHEN YOU, YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU IN SOME WAYS LEAVE AND GO OFF AFTER HIGH SCHOOL, I'M JUST ALWAYS FASCINATED WITH WHAT YOU'RE ABLE TO DO AND HOW YOU'RE ABLE TO USE YOUR EXPERIENCE TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE.
SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH AND JUST CONGRATULATIONS.
AND I ALSO I REALLY WANTED TO.
I LOVED I LOVED ALL THE TOUCAN ART, ALL THE DIFFERENT, THE DIFFERENT BIRDS AND HOW THEY WERE INTERPRETED, AND THAT THEY HAD LEARNED ABOUT PRIMARY COLORS AND SECONDARY COLORS BEFORE THAT.
AND THEN THEY USED WHAT THEY LEARNED IN THIS REALLY FUN PROJECT.
AND THAT'S JUST TO ME, THE EPITOME OF CREATING LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES LIKE YOU LEAH THE KIDS REALLY CONNECT WITH.
AND I ALSO APPRECIATED PRINCIPAL HENLEY'S CYP.
SHE WAS KIND OF THE FIRST ONE TO GO, AND SHE DID A WONDERFUL JOB, AND I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING AS WE GO INTO MULTIPLE YEARS HOW THE PRINCIPALS, THE INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERS AT THE SCHOOLS WILL BE ABLE TO UTILIZE THEIR TEAMS TO REALLY FOCUS AND PINPOINT FOR STRATEGIC ACHIEVEMENT FOR EACH AND EVERY KID.
BECAUSE I THINK WHAT WE'VE SEEN YEAR AFTER YEAR IS WHEN KIDS ARE ACKNOWLEDGED FOR WHO THEY ARE AND THE SUPPORTS ARE GIVEN TO THEM, THEY REALLY DO SUCCEED AND THEY EXCEED
[02:35:01]
OUR EXPECTATIONS.SO I'M ANXIOUS TO SEE OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL YEARS HOW THIS ENHANCED CYP PROJECT WILL WORK ITS WAY INTO IMPROVEMENT AND INDIVIDUAL STUDENT LIVES.
YEAH, I'LL TRY TO BE BRIEF HERE, BUT I JUST WANTED TO GIVE A BIG SHOUT OUT AGAIN TO DANA AND MARA FOR THE VACCINATION CLINIC THIS SUNDAY, I VOLUNTEERED THAT AS A GREETER AND WATCHED ALL THE KIDS COME IN AND THE FIRST THING I WAS AMAZED AT HOW BRAVE THESE KIDS ARE.
I MEAN, THERE WERE A FEW THAT WERE HUGGING THEIR PARENTS LEGS AND WORRYING ABOUT COMING IN, BUT ALL THE WAY DOWN TO KINDERGARTNERS.
THESE KIDS JUST STRODE RIGHT IN.
THEY WERE READY FOR IT, AND I WAS JUST SO PROUD OF THEM.
AND IMAGINE GETTING A THOUSAND OF THEM DONE IN ONE DAY IS A MARVELOUS EXERCISE IN ORGANIZATION FOR THE VISITING NURSES AND THE BACK CORRIDOR AND THEN THE WHOLE THE OPEN BOX THEATER AREA WITH THE WHERE EVERYBODY CONGREGATED FOR IT WASN'T THE IT WAS AN OPEN AREA THERE WHERE EVERYBODY CONGREGATED TO HAVE TO WAIT 15 MINUTES BEFORE THEY LEFT.
AND IT JUST THE ORGANIZATION WAS FANTASTIC AND IT HAD TO BE IN ORDER TO GET SAFELY A THOUSAND KIDS THROUGH WITH THEIR PARENTS IN AN INDOOR SITUATION.
SO THANK YOU FOR THE TREMENDOUS ORGANIZATION ON THAT.
AND I'LL JUST SAY I LOVE SEEING THE KIDS.
I LOVE THEIR PARAGRAPHS AND I LOVE THE ARTWORK.
SO THANK YOU SO MUCH, LYNNWOOD ELEMENTARY FOR SHARING THAT WITH US.
I WISH EVERYBODY A VERY HAPPY AND SAFE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY.
THANK YOU, I'LL JUST START OFF BY WISHING EVERYONE A HAPPY TIME, HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON AND HOPE THAT THEY DO HAVE A CHANCE TO TAKE A BREAK AND RESET BEFORE WE JUMP BACK INTO 2022.
THIS LAST WEEK, WE, THE LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE OF OUR DISTRICT, DID MEET TO TRY TO COME UP WITH SOME STRATEGIC PLANNING ON HOW WE'RE GOING TO BE ADVOCATING THIS WEEK.
LOOK, LOOK FOR ADDITIONAL EMAILS IN YOUR BOX AND HOW WE HAD SOME ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON HOW WE'RE GOING TO BE ADVOCATING AND DEVELOPING RELATIONSHIPS WITH OUR LEGISLATORS.
I WAS NOT ABLE TO ATTEND A GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR ANY PARTICULAR LENGTH OF TIME, SO I'M IF DIRECTOR KATIMS OR KILGORE WANT TO GIVE A LITTLE BRIEF UPDATE ON THAT, THAT WOULD BE ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL.
AND THAT'S ALL I'VE GOT FOR TONIGHT.
DIRECTOR KATIMS. I WANT TO SPECIFICALLY THANK THE STUDENTS AGAIN, OUR STUDENT ADVISORS, I KNOW I FREQUENTLY DO THIS, BUT YOU ALWAYS GIVE US INSIGHTFUL INFORMATION, AND TONIGHT SOME OF THE INFORMATION YOU GAVE US WAS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT.
AND I KNOW DISTRICT STAFF WILL FOLLOW UP.
I KNOW CHRIS BAILEY IS SITTING RIGHT HERE ON.
SO HE HEARD THE COMMENT ABOUT THE WEBSITE ISSUES, WHICH ARE VERY CONCERNING, RITIKA.
SO THANK YOU FOR SHARING THAT.
BUT YOU KNOW, IT JUST UNDERSCORES HOW WHAT A GREAT JOURNALIST YOU ARE AND WHY YOU DESERVE THAT AWARD AND THE OTHER AWARDS THAT I KNOW YOU'RE GOING TO BE GETTING THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE BECAUSE YOU ARE QUITE A LEADER, AS ARE ALL OF YOU.
YOU'RE GREAT TO STAY ON THROUGH THIS WHOLE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING.
I THINK WHILE I ENJOYED EVERYTHING TONIGHT, I FOUND IT INTERESTING AND IMPORTANT.
I'M PARTICULARLY HAPPY THAT THE STRATEGIC PLAN IS APPROVED, AND IT GIVES US NOW A BLUEPRINT FOR THE WORK THAT WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS.
IT WILL EVOLVE AND CHANGE, BUT WE HAVE TO START WITH GOALS.
I THINK IT WILL HELP FOCUS OUR WORK AND WE CAN BEGIN TO REALLY MOVE IN A DIRECTION OF PROVIDING THE BEST POSSIBLE EDUCATION FOR OUR KIDS AND SUPPORT FOR OUR STAFF.
SO I THINK THAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT AND EVERYBODY DESERVES A GREAT, RESTFUL THANKSGIVING.
I HOPE YOU GET TO BE WITH PEOPLE WHO YOU LOVE AND THAT YOU GET TO DO THINGS THAT BRING YOU JOY AND RELAXATION AND FOCUS ON THE GOOD THINGS OF LIFE.
I WOULD JUST I SAID MOST OF WHAT I WAS GOING TO SAY ABOUT HOW THE THE HOUSING SOLUTION AND I'M VERY EXCITED ABOUT IT.
AND SO I FELT THAT IT WAS IMPORTANT TO DISCUSS, YOU KNOW, PEOPLE'S CONCERNS BECAUSE I WANT TO GET OUR COMMUNITY AS EXCITED ABOUT IT AS WE ARE, AND I THINK IT'S REALLY GOING TO BE A BRIGHT SPOT IN OUR COMMUNITY.
AS FOR THE STRATEGIC PLAN, THIS IS THE I FELT LIKE TONIGHT THIS IS KIND OF THE WORK.
IT MAKES THIS WORK REALLY MEANINGFUL TO ME.
SO I WAS REALLY PLEASED TO PASS THE STRATEGIC PLAN AND AND TO HAVE THESE WONDERFUL GOALS THAT WILL GUIDE OUR WORK FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL YEARS.
AND AND I DO THINK THAT THERE'S A PLACE FOR EVERYONE TO GET INVOLVED IN BUILDING THE BUILDING BLOCKS THAT GET US TOWARDS MEETING THOSE GOALS.
ANYWAY, HAPPY THANKSGIVING, I HAVE PLENTY TO SAY, BUT I'M NOT GOING TO BORE YOU WITH IT.
SO HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE.
AND I'LL GIVE THE LAST WORD TO DR.
I JUST WANT TO WISH EVERYBODY A HAPPY THANKSGIVING AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMITMENT.
THANK YOU TO ALL THE STUDENT ADVISORS FOR YOUR INSIGHTFUL COMMENTS, AND WE WILL FOLLOW UP ON SOME OF THESE COMMENTS.
SO THANK YOU AND WISHING YOU ALL A RESTFUL FEW DAYS.
MEETING ADJOURNED.
