WE RESPECT THEIR SOVEREIGNTY, THEIR RIGHT TO SELF-DETERMINATION, AND WE HONOR THEIR SACRED SPIRITUAL CONNECTION WITH THE LAND AND WATER.
BY ACKNOWLEDGING THESE HOMELANDS WE COMMIT TO WORKING WITH TRIBAL NATIONS TO FURTHER THE EDUCATION AIMS THEY HAVE IDENTIFIED IN OUR CLASSROOMS AND SCHOOLS.
[4. FLAG SALUTE-6:35 pm]
NEXT, WE HAVE OUR FLAG SALUTE.THE NEXT ITEM ON OUR AGENDA IS TO APPROVE THE AGENDA.
[5. APPROVAL OF AGENDA-6:37 pm]
DO I HEAR A MOTION? THIS IS ANN MOVE TO APPROVE.IT'S BEEN MOVED AND SECONDED TO APPROVE TONIGHT'S AGENDA.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE I'LL GO AHEAD AND CALL FOR A VOTE, ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF APPROVING TONIGHT'S AGENDA.
PLEASE INDICATE BY SAYING AYE.
THE MOTION PASSES AND THE AGENDA IS APPROVED.
NEXT, WE HAVE A CELEBRATION OF OUR DISTRICT CALENDAR STUDENT ARTISTS.
[6. CELEBRATIONS 6:40 pm]
TAKE IT AWAY.THANK YOU BOARD OF DIRECTORS, I'M GONNA TURN OVER TO TO HARMONY, WHO IS GOING TO BE PRESENTING SOME OF OUR PHENOMENAL STUDENT ARTISTS THAT HAVE PUT TOGETHER OUR OUR DISTRICT CALENDAR, SO HARMONY.
AND CHARELL HAS THE SLIDES, SO.
SO WE ARE SO HAPPY TONIGHT TO HONOR OUR CALENDAR ARTISTS.
WE HAVE SOME OF THEM JOINING US TONIGHT HERE ON THE ZOOM, SO THEY WILL BE JOINING US LATER TO PRESENT SOME OF THEIR ARTWORK IF THEY FEEL COMFORTABLE DOING SO.
AND SO WE'RE JUST REALLY EXCITED THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO COME, YOU KNOW, IN THE PRE-COVID WORLD.
THIS IS OUR SECOND YEAR IN A ROW WHERE WE HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO HAVE A NICE RECEPTION AND HONOR ALL OF THE ARTISTS WHO ARE FEATURED IN THE CALENDAR IN PERSON.
BUT MAYBE NEXT YEAR WILL BE OUR YEAR AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO THAT AND BEING ABLE TO HONOR THEM IN PERSON.
SO BEFORE I GET TO A VIDEO THAT BARB CHILDS PUT TOGETHER FROM THE DISTRICT THAT SHOWS ALL THE ART BECAUSE WE REALLY WANT TO HONOR THEM AGAIN BECAUSE IT CAN'T BE IN-PERSON.
THIS HAS BEEN AROUND FOR TWENTY FIVE YEARS.
WE'VE BEEN DOING CALENDAR ARTISTS RECOGNITION FOR OUR STUDENTS.
SO IT'S QUITE A LEGACY AND IT'S REALLY INCREDIBLE WHEN OUR STUDENTS ARE CHOSEN AND THEIR ARTWORK IS CHOSEN FOR THIS CALENDAR, IT'S I ALWAYS WANT THEM TO KNOW AND FEEL PROUD THAT IT'S A BIG DEAL.
AND SO I'M JUST SO GRATEFUL FOR THE TIME THEY PUT INTO THE ARTWORK AS AS WE ALL ARE.
WE'VE THIRTY SEVEN ARTISTS WERE WERE SELECTED THEIR ARTWORK OUT OF ABOUT THREE HUNDRED ENTRIES, AND WE WANT TO THANK THE FOUNDATION FOR EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT THAT HELPS FUND THE CALENDAR AS WELL FOR US, SO WE CAN GET THAT OUT TO ALL OF OUR FAMILIES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR WITH SO THEY CAN START PLANNING AND ALSO SEE SOME REALLY INCREDIBLE ARTWORK.
SO RIGHT NOW, I'D LIKE TO GO AHEAD TO THE NEXT SLIDE.
AND CHARELL, WELL, FINGERS CROSSED THAT I CAN GET IT TO WORK AND WE'LL JUST TAKE A LISTEN.
AND WHILE WE MAY NOT BE HEARING MUSIC OR ANYTHING, I DO JUST WANT YOU TO TAKE THIS TIME TO REALLY LOOK AT THE ARTWORK AND APPRECIATE ALL THE TIME AND EFFORT THAT HAS GONE INTO IT AND JUST ENJOY THE MOMENT OF THESE NEXT COUPLE OF MINUTES OF REALLY LOOKING AT IT AND JUST APPRECIATING THE INCREDIBLE TALENT WE HAVE HERE IN THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT.
SO I WILL MUTE MYSELF SO THAT YOU CAN JUST ENJOY ALL THE BEAUTIFUL ARTWORK.
[00:09:24]
WELL, I FEEL LIKE WE WERE JUST AT A REALLY AMAZING ART GALLERY, AND THAT WAS SUCH A GIFT, SO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TAKING A FEW MINUTES TO REALLY LOOK AT THAT INCREDIBLE ARTWORK.WE ARE JUST SO PROUD OF OUR STUDENTS AND THE AMAZING TALENTS THAT THEY HAVE.
WE DO HAVE TWO STUDENT ARTISTS WITH US, AND IF THEY FEEL COMFORTABLE, I WOULD INVITE THEM TO TURN ON THEIR CAMERAS AND UNMUTE THEMSELVES.
AND IF THEY'RE FEELING UNCOMFORTABLE, THAT'S OK TOO.
I KNOW THE BOARD MIGHT WANT TO ASK YOU SOME QUESTIONS AND YOU CAN SHARE YOUR
[00:10:02]
ARTWORK.AND CHARELL, SHE'S ON THE SLIDE.
SO IF YOU DO WANT TO SHOW SLIDE FOUR THAT IS SARAH'S ARTWORK, AND WE CAN LOOK AT THAT.
SO THANK YOU, SARAH, FOR BEING HERE.
YEAH, THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME.
SO CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WOMEN ADORNED WITH FLOWERS AND HOW YOU CAME ABOUT WITH THAT? YEAH, IT WAS ORIGINALLY I STARTED DURING COVID.
CLAY BECAME ONE OF OUR HOBBIES.
MY AUNT IS AN ART TEACHER, AND SO SHE HAD ACCESS TO A KILN AND SHE WAS ONE OF THE FEW PEOPLE WE WERE ABLE TO SEE DURING COVID.
SO WE STARTED WORKING WITH A LOT OF CLAY.
AND SO LAST YEAR I DECIDED TO TAKE CLAY ONE, I GO TO MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL AND WE HAVE AN AWESOME ART TEACHER, MS. [INAUDIBLE] HER CLASS AND ONE OF THE ASSIGNMENTS WAS TO MAKE COIL BASE.
AND I KNEW I WANTED TO DO SOMETHING WITH FLOWERS AND LEAVES.
AND THEN AS I STARTED MAKING THE PIECE, I THOUGHT THE PROPORTIONS KIND OF LOOKED LIKE A PERSON.
AND SO I DECIDED I WOULD ADD A FACE ONTO IT.
THANK YOU SO MUCH, AND YOU ARE A SENIOR NOW AT MEADOWDALE HIGH.
DIRECTOR MCMURRAY HAS SOME THINGS SHE'D LIKE TO SAY.
SARAH, HOW DID YOU HOW DID YOU HANDLE THE DIFFERENT GLAZES, THE DIFFERENT COLORS FOR THE THE LEAVES AND THE AND THE FLOWERS THAT ADORN THE SIDES OF THE PIECE? MM HMM.
ALL THE GLAZES COME IN THEIR OWN CONTAINERS, AND SO I JUST USE LIKE A REGULAR PAINT PALETTE AND REGULAR PAINT BRUSHES.
AND I JUST POURED THEM INTO THE PALETTE AND THEN WOULD PUT THEM ON INDIVIDUALLY AND DIFFERENT GLAZES.
A LOT OF THE TIMES YOU HAVE TO PUT DIFFERENT AMOUNTS ON OR DIFFERENT NUMBER OF LAYERS.
SO I WOULD LOOK ONLINE USUALLY AT THE WEBSITES OF THE BRANDS, WHATEVER BRAND GLAZE I WAS USING TO SEE HOW MANY COATS THEY RECOMMENDED FOR THE CONE OF FIRE I WAS DOING.
AND SO DID YOU DID YOU GLAZE THE PIECES SEPARATELY AND THEN AND THEN ADHERE THEM TO THE PIECE OR DID YOU ONCE YOU ADHERED THEM TO THE PIECE, THEN YOU INDIVIDUALLY GLAZED THEM? INDIVIDUALLY AFTERWARDS.
CLAY HAS TO BE FIRED TWO TIMES.
SO THE FIRST TIME, IT'S ALL GRAY, AND THAT'S WHEN YOU ATTACH THINGS.
SO I WOULD ATTACH ALL THE LEAVES IN THE FLOWERS AND FACIAL FEATURES THAT I WANTED, AND THEN IT WOULD GET FIRED.
AND IT TURNS OUT ALL WHITE AND IT'S KIND OF CHALKY, BUT VERY SOLID.
AND THEN YOU GLAZE IT ALL ON AFTERWARDS.
AND THEN IN THE KILN, THE SECOND TIME IT ALL MELTS AND THE BRIGHT COLORS COME THROUGH.
NANCY, DID YOU HAVE SOMETHING? I DO.
SARAH, I THINK IT'S EXQUISITE.
SO IMPRESSED, I'M CURIOUS, IS IT A VASE? SO IT GOES ALL THE WAY AROUND OR IS IT MORE OF A SEMICIRCLE? YEAH, I HAVE IT RIGHT HERE, I CAN SHOW.
AND THEN THE FLOWERS GO ALL THE WAY AROUND.
AND THEN IT IS HOLLOW INSIDE, AND IT'S ALL GLAZED, JUST A WHITE SPECKLE INSIDE.
SO DO YOU PLAN TO USE IT AND PUT FLOWERS IN IT ON A REGULAR BASIS? SOMETIMES I HAVE BEFORE IT KIND OF DEPENDS, BUT RIGHT NOW IT'S UP.
IT USUALLY SITS UP ON A SHELF WHERE IT DOESN'T GET A LOT OF LIGHT.
SO WE DON'T USUALLY HAVE FLOWERS IN IT, BUT I HAVE BEFORE.
KEEP KEEP UP AND USING IT, EVEN IF ARE YOU INTERESTED IN DOING THAT SORT OF AS A CAREER OR IS IT MORE OF A HOBBY? IT'S JUST MORE OF A HOBBY.
THANKS FOR SHARING IT WITH US.
OH, I WANT TO JUST LET YOU KNOW, I THINK IT'S BEAUTIFUL ARTWORK, AND I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR DESDRIPTION OF THE PROCESS BECAUSE I'VE LEARNED SOMETHING TONIGHT AND I'M A BIT INSPIRED TO POSSIBLY TAKE UP SOME OF THE THE ART THAT YOU'VE [INAUDIBLE] SOME POTTERY.
THIS HAS BEEN VERY INSPIRING FOR ME, AND I REALLY LOVE THAT YOU SHOWED US THE BACK.
[00:15:02]
IT'S EVEN MORE COLORFUL, SO THANK YOU SO MUCH.ALL RIGHT, WELL, THANK YOU SO MUCH, SARAH, FOR BEING HERE AND TO OUR OTHER ARTISTS WHO ARE HERE JUST LISTENING IN.
WE APPRECIATE ALL OF YOU SO MUCH FOR THE WORK THAT YOU HAVE DONE AND WHAT YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE DISTRICT.
SO KEEP IT UP AND KEEP SHARING YOUR WONDERFUL WORK WITH US.
AND THAT CONCLUDES THIS PRESENTATION.
THANK YOU BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR GIVING US THIS TIME.
HARMONY, AND THANK YOU, SARAH.
[7. SUPERINTENDENT REPORT-7:00 pm]
NEXT, WE HAVE OUR SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT, DR.THANK YOU, BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND PRESIDENT KILGORE.
REALLY APPRECIATE THE STUDENT ARTIST AND ALL THEIR WORK THAT THEY'VE DONE.
AND SARAH, THANK YOU FOR BEING ON.
I'LL BE BRIEF FOR MY COMMENTS TONIGHT AS WE WILL GET TO A STATUS REPORT LATER ON REGARDING COVID VACCINE LIMITATIONS WE HAVE IN OUR COUNTY.
I KNOW THERE'S A DIFFERENCE AND BETWEEN THE VARIOUS COUNTIES, AND WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO ADVOCATE FOR MORE EQUALIZED DISTRIBUTION OF THE VACCINE FOR OUR KIDS AGES FIVE THROUGH 11.
I KNOW WE'RE SEEING THE DIFFERENCE AND WE'RE BEING ASKED WHY WE'RE DIFFERENT FROM SHORELINE, WHICH IS WHICH IS A NEIGHBORING DISTRICT IN KING COUNTY AND WHY THEY HAVE VACCINE CLINICS AVAILABLE MORE AVAILABLE THAN THAN WHAT WE HAVE.
I KNOW WE HAVE FIVE, ACTUALLY.
WE HAD ABOUT 700 STUDENTS THAT ARE ABLE TO GET VACCINATED, BUT THOSE SLOTS WENT VERY QUICKLY.
THEY WENT WITHIN WITHIN THE HOUR.
SO CONTINUE TO WORK WITH SNOHOMISH COUNTY AND THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH.
I KNOW EVERYBODY IS TRYING TO DO THE BEST THEY CAN, AND THERE'S A SLOW ROLLOUT FOR VACCINES NATIONWIDE, BUT ALSO JUST MAKING SURE THAT WE HAVE EQUAL DISTRIBUTION AMONG THE COUNTIES AND NOT ONE COUNTY HAVING MORE EASY ACCESS FOR THE VACCINES.
NOT THAT IT IS EASY, BUT MORE EASIER ACCESS TO THE VACCINE THAN IN OTHER COUNTIES.
AND YOU KNOW, WE'VE BEEN MEETING WITH DR.
SPITTERS QUITE OFTEN AND AGAIN CONTINUE TO ADVOCATE.
SO I KNOW THAT'S NOT THE ANSWER THAT FOLKS WANT TO HEAR, BUT I DO KNOW THAT WE ARE WORKING HARD TO TRY TO DO THE BEST WE CAN WITH WHAT WE HAVE.
BUT WE WILL BE WORKING WITH OTHER SUPERINTENDENTS IN THE LOCAL AREA TO SUBMIT LETTERS TO THOSE HIGHER UPS AT THE OLYMPIA TO ENSURE THAT THEY HEAR OUR VOICES AND WE'LL SHARE THOSE LETTERS AND COMMUNICATION WITH THE BOARD.
WE'RE ALSO HAVING DIFFICULTY FINDING SUBSTITUTES, AND I APPRECIATE THE WORK THAT OUR HUMAN RESOURCES STAFF HAVE DONE TO FILL SPOTS.
IT'S NOT THE THE NUMBER OF ABSENTEEISM, IT'S IT'S A LACK OF SUBSTITUTES AND PEOPLE QUALIFIED TO BUILD GOING TO INTO CLASSROOMS. THAT'S WHERE WE'RE FINDING THE BIGGEST ISSUE RIGHT NOW, AND WE'RE STILL HIRING A VARIETY OF POSITIONS.
BUT WE'RE HAVING DIFFICULTY FINDING A SUBSTITUTE RIGHT NOW.
WE'RE CONTINUING TO LEVERAGE OUR CENTRAL OFFICE STAFF, INCLUDING OUR TEACHERS, ON SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT AS WELL AS OUR CABINET MEMBERS THAT ARE SUBSTITUTING FOR PRINCIPALS RIGHT NOW.
WHEN WE HAVE TO DO IT REALLY IS.
EVERYBODY IS PITCHING IN TO DO THE BEST THEY CAN FOR OUR FOR OUR KIDS TO BE ABLE TO STAY IN CLASSES AND HAVING TEACHERS IN FRONT OF THEM.
SO TO EXPLAIN IT TO THE BOARD, WHAT'S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW ARE PRINCIPALS ARE OUR CONTACT TRACERS OUR PRINCIPALS ARE CONTACT TRACERS.
AND WHAT HAPPENS IS IF THERE'S SHORTAGE IN THE BUILDING LEVEL, SPECIFICALLY AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL, THOSE PRINCIPALS SUBSTITUTE FOR TEACHERS OR GO IN AND FILL FOR CLASSROOM SPACE TIME UNTIL THEY UNTIL WE'RE ABLE TO FILL THE POSITION, SOMETIMES WE'RE NOT ABLE TO FILL THE POSITION.
SO AS YOU CAN SEE, THERE'S ALSO THE CONTACT TRACERS AND WE'RE HAVING SEEMED LIKE EVERY OTHER EMAIL I GET RIGHT NOW IS A COVID CASE IN OUR CAMPUS OR SOMETHING HAPPENING WITH COVID IS IT STARTS TO REALLY CAUSE SOME CONCERN AT THE BUILDING LEVEL WHEN OUR BUILDING, WHEN OUR BUILDING PRINCIPALS AREN'T AREN'T AVAILABLE TO BE ABLE TO DO TO MANAGE THE BUILDING BECAUSE THEY'RE MANAGING THE CLASSROOM.
BECAUSE WE HAVE KIDS THERE, THEY'RE LEFT UNATTENDED.
SO WE ARE WORKING HARD TO CONTINUE TO STAFF UP.
I KNOW OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DEBBIE CARTER AND HER STAFF ARE WORKING VERY HARD AT THAT.
BUT I JUST WANT TO INFORM THE BOARD.
THAT'S IT'S IT'S A CONCERN RIGHT NOW.
WE HAD SOME OF OUR SENIOR LEADERS.
I THINK I'M GOING INTO A BUILDING SUBSTITUTING FOR PRINCIPAL TWICE THIS MONTH, LATER IN THE MONTH.
SO WE'RE REALLY SHORT IN A VARIETY OF LEVELS AND BUT CONTINUING TO WORK TOWARD AGAIN GREATER STAFFING LEVELS.
ALSO JUST WANT TO CONFIRM THAT THIS IS NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH AND REALLY HONOR AND RESPECT, AS STATED EARLIER, THE LAND THAT WE ARE ABLE TO TO BE ON AND
[00:20:10]
RESPECT THE SOVEREIGNTY OF THOSE FOLKS THAT THOSE TRIBAL LEADERS HAVE BEEN, THOSE TRIBES HAVE BEEN HERE BEFORE US.SO SOMETHING THAT WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE CONTINUE TO CALL THAT OUT AND RESPECT THE LAND AND THE PEOPLE THAT WERE THAT WE ARE ABLE TO HAVE THESE MEETINGS ON.
SO AGAIN, JUST WANTED TO BE QUICK WITH YOU, BUT WANT TO THANK ALL THE STAFF THAT HAVE REALLY PUT IT TOGETHER TO TO CONTINUE TO KEEP KIDS IN CLASSROOMS AND SCHOOLS RUNNING.
THIS MORNING WE DID HAVE SOME SOME THE HEAVY WIND ISSUES.
I THINK WE HAD A HANDFUL OF SCHOOLS THAT WERE ACTUALLY CLOSED THIS MORNING FOR A PERIOD OF TIME AND ALSO ONE THIS AFTERNOON.
BELIEVE IT OR NOT, ONE IS AFTERNOON THAT LOST POWER.
SO BECAUSE OF THE HIGH WINDS AND REALLY APPRECIATE THE TEAMWORK, BECAUSE I'VE HEARD FROM A COUPLE OF PRINCIPLES THE TEAMWORK THAT EVERYBODY CAN BAND TOGETHER TO, TO MAKE IT WORK FOR THE KIDS AND THE FAMILIES.
SO VERY THANKFUL FOR ALL STAFF AS WE GET THROUGH THESE EMERGENCIES HERE IN THIS AREA, BUT VERY THANKFUL MORE THAN ANYTHING TO HAVE KIDS IN OUR CLASSROOMS. SO THANK YOU, BOARD OF DIRECTORS.
WELL, THANK YOU, DR. BALDERAS.
NEXT, WE HAVE APPROVAL OF MINUTES, OUR FIRST ITEM IS A SINGLE READING TO APPROVE

ANY ABSTENTIONS, THE MOTION PASSES AND THE CONSENT AGENDA IS APPROVED.
[10. PUBLIC COMMENTS-7:20 pm]
NEXT, WE HAVE OUR PUBLIC COMMENTS, AND I THINK WE HAVE ONE PERSON, NICOLE [INAUDIBLE], WHO HAS SIGNED UP TO SPEAK.CAN YOU HEAR ME? YES, I CAN THANK YOU.
THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME HAVE SOME TIME TODAY TO TALK ABOUT THE LACK OF AN ADVOCATE FOR HEALTH AND FITNESS AT THE ESD.
WE ARE ALL AWARE THAT THIS YEAR HAS NOT BEEN LIKE ONE EVER BEFORE AND THERE WAS A NEED TO REASSIGN SOME POSITIONS AT THE ESD TO GO BACK INTO THE CLASSROOM.
[00:25:05]
WITH THIS CHANGE, THE PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT HAS LOST AN ADVOCATE AT THE ESD AND A PERSON FOR US PE TEACHERS TO BE ABLE TO GO TO FOR QUESTIONS, CONCERNS MEETING GOALS FOR OUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THROUGH PD IN THE BIGGEST IMPACT, WHICH IS GUIDING NEW AND OLD TEACHERS IN HOW TO HAVE THE BIGGEST IMPACT TO OUR STUDENTS.HEALTH AND FITNESS HAS HAD A POINT FOUR [INAUDIBLE] AT THE DISTRICT LEVEL TWO FOR P.E.
AND POINT TWO FOR HEALTH, WHICH HAS COVERED NOT ONLY ALL OF ELEMENTARY PE INCLUDED MIDDLE SCHOOL P.E.
HIGH SCHOOL P.E., WHICH THERE'S ABOUT 70 OF US.
BUT IT ALSO INCLUDED ANYONE WHO TEACHES HEALTH, WHICH IS TECHNICALLY ALL ELEMENTARY TEACHERS BECAUSE THERE ARE HEALTH STATE STANDARDS FOR THE CLASSROOMS TO BE MET.
THIS POSITION WAS NOT ONLY AN ADVOCATE FOR US PE TEACHERS AT THE ESD, BUT ALSO INCLUDED BEING A COMMUNITY ADVOCATE.
ONE OF THE BIGGEST IMPACTS SO FAR THIS YEAR IS OUR IMPACT WITH THE BICYCLE CLUB THROUGH THE CASCADE BICYCLE CLUB.
MY FIRST WEEK TEACHING THE KIDS FIRST QUESTION WAS WILL WE GET THE BICYCLES THIS YEAR? AND I WAS EXCITED TO SAY YES, FINALLY, SINCE WE'RE IN PERSON.
HOWEVER, I HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT WHO OR WHAT OR WHEN, AND THOSE ARE THINGS THAT ARE USUALLY FIGURED OUT BY THE MIDDLE OF OCTOBER.
BUT THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANY COMMUNICATION ON THIS.
ON GOAL NUMBER TWO FOR THE DISTRICT STRATEGIC PLAN FOR THE 2021 THROUGH 2026.
IT SAYS THAT THE DISTRICT HOPES TO PROVIDE ENRICHMENT TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR ALL STAFF MEMBERS TO CREATE THE CONDITIONS THAT EMPOWER STUDENTS TO GROW, THRIVE AND ACHIEVE EACH YEAR.
NOW I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS YEAR THE DISTRICT IS TRYING TO SLOW DOWN AND GIVE TEACHERS SOME BREATHING ROOM FOR PD, BUT TEACHERS HAVE HAD ZERO SO FAR.
THERE IS AN INEQUITY AND INEQUALITY WHEN IT COMES TO THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, SPECIFICALLY BETWEEN MUSIC, LIBRARY, AND PE IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.
MUSIC HAS A 1.0 MANAGER TO COVER THE VISUAL ARTS K-12 AND IN THE DISTRICT AND LIBRARY HAS BEEN ABLE TO KEEP THEIR POINT FIVE [INAUDIBLE] THAT DID NOT GET REASSIGNED TO THE CLASSROOMS, BUT THEY WERE ABLE TO FIGURE IT OUT AND KEEP THEM AS A PERSON FOR THE LIBRARIANS TO GO TO.
NOW, FOR THE PAST FEW MONTHS, I HAVE HEARD FROM THE DISTRICT AND FROM THE SCHOOL BOARD THAT WE ARE IMPORTANT AND THAT WE ARE VALUED, AND IF THIS IS A TRUE STATEMENT, AND IF OUR DISTRICT FOLLOWS RESEARCH ON THE IMPORTANCE OF HEALTHY KIDS AND HOW BEING HEALTHY WILL HELP STUDENTS BE A BETTER LEARNER, THEN THE DISTRICT AND SCHOOL BOARD WOULD MAKE SURE THAT US PE TEACHERS HAVE WHAT WE NEED AND WE HAVEN'T HAD THAT YET.
SO THANK YOU FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY FOR ME TO INFORM YOU ABOUT THE STRUGGLES IN PE.
WE HAVE OUR OUR AGENDA BACK, I CAN LOOK AT MINE.
WHERE ARE WE? I'M SORRY, I'M CONFUSED.
[11. REPORTS-7:50 pm]
NEXT, WE HAVE OUR 2021 TO 2022 STATUS UPDATE.THANK YOU, BOARD, AND IF I COULD GET THE SLIDESHOW CHARELL.
AGAIN, AS STATED EARLIER, WE ARE CONTINUING TO WORK WITH SNOHOMISH COUNTY HEALTH AND AND OTHER PARTNERS TO TRY AND GET VACCINES INTO OUR BUILDINGS, INTO OUR KIDS ARMS, BUT ALSO ON OUR BUILDING SITES.
I THINK STAFF ARE PREPARED TO BE ABLE TO TO SPEAK A LITTLE BIT TO THAT.
I TURN OVER TO DANA, WHO'S BEEN REALLY TAKING LEAD WITH [INAUDIBLE] OUR LEAD NURSE, IN TERMS OF TRYING TO ADVOCATE FOR WORKING WITH OUR COUNTY AND SEATTLE VISITING NURSES TO REALLY WORK TOWARDS HAVING CLARITY IN HOW MUCH HOW MUCH WE CAN DO ON OUR CAMPUSES, SO TURN OVER THE DANA IN TERMS OF THE WORK THAT'S BEEN DONE AND ALSO JUST TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE UPDATE IN TERMS OF WHERE WE'RE AT RIGHT NOW.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS REALLY QUICK UPDATE FROM SNOHOMISH HEALTH DISTRICT.
EVERY EVERY TIME WE COME TOGETHER, WE TALK ABOUT HOW MANY CASES PER 100000.
THEY GOT UP TO THREE EIGHTY THREE THE PREVIOUS TWO WEEKS AND MONDAY'S COUNT FOR THE PAST TWO WEEKS WAS DOWN TO THREE POINT FORTY SIX PER 100000, WHICH IS GOOD PROGRESS.
[00:30:01]
WE STILL HAVE STILL LIKE THAT TO BE A LOT LOWER, AND WE HOPE WITH THE VACCINE FOR FIVE TO 11 YEAR OLDS AS IT GETS ROLLED OUT, THAT WILL CONTINUE TO DECLINE.THIS IS A DECREASE OF 15 PERCENT IN THE LAST 14 DAYS.
THOSE ARE THE TESTS THAT ARE DONE IN THE COUNTY AND SIX POINT EIGHT PERCENT OF THE TESTS THAT ARE BEING GIVEN ARE COMING BACK POSITIVE AGAIN.
MANY TESTS ARE GIVEN BECAUSE IT IS ONE OF THOSE MITIGATING STRATEGIES.
SO MANY, MANY TESTS ARE GIVEN AND SOMETIMES TESTS ARE GIVEN FOR PEOPLE TO TRAVEL IN THOSE KIND OF THINGS.
SNOHOMISH COUNTY RATES ARE DECLINING SLOWER THAN OTHER PARTS OF THE STATE IS THE TREND THAT WE'RE SEEING.
AND THEN OUR WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH IS GETTING ABOUT SEVENTY FIVE THOUSAND DOSES OF THE FIVE THROUGH 11 YEAR OLD VACCINE PER WEEK, AND SNOHOMISH COUNTY GETS ABOUT 10 PERCENT OF THAT NUMBER RIGHT NOW.
THEY HAVE, SNOHOMISH COUNTY IS IT'S KIND OF THE FLOW THROUGH FOR ANY OF THE VACCINES THAT WE'RE GETTING.
WE'RE GETTING SOME ADULT VACCINES AND THEN ALSO SOME FIVE TO 11 YEAR OLD VACCINES.
BALDERAS MENTIONED THIS WHEN WE TALKED WITH IN A MEETING WITH SNOHOMISH COUNTY.
THEY DIDN'T SPECIFICALLY ORDER VACCINES TO BE DISTRIBUTED DIRECTLY BY THEM.
IT WAS THROUGH OTHER ENTITIES THAT HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM.
AND THE FIRST FOCUS WAS WAS PEDIATRICIANS AND LOCAL PHARMACIES AND THOSE KIND OF THINGS.
WE KNOW THAT OUR FAMILIES, THAT WE ARE A TRUSTED SPACE FOR OUR FAMILIES TO ACCESS VACCINES.
WE WANT TO CONTINUE TO PUSH ON THAT AND GET VACCINES IN AT OUR SCHOOL SITES.
FOR INSTANCE, WE HAVE A ONE THAT WE'RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT IN A MINUTE THAT'S HAPPENING ON SUNDAY, AND WE'VE PARTNERED WITH [INAUDIBLE] SCHOOL DISTRICT AND EVERETT SCHOOL DISTRICT JUST TO GET THE WORD OUT, AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO DO THAT TO GET AS MANY VACCINES AVAILABLE TO OUR FAMILIES AS POSSIBLE.
THE PROJECTION IS THAT ONE IN SEVEN FIVE TO 11 YEAR OLDS IN SNOHOMISH COUNTY WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET VACCINATED WEEKLY, SO WE WILL CONTINUE TO WORK ON THAT.
SPECIFICALLY TO THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT, WE ARE STILL SEEING A NUMBER OF CASES OF COVID POSITIVE CASES OF COVID 19.
THIS IS SOME DATA FROM THE LAST LITTLE BIT LESS THAN A MONTH.
WE'VE GIVEN ONE THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED TWENTY EIGHT PCR TESTS WITH AN AVERAGE OF SIXTY ONE TESTS PER SCHOOL DAY.
THE TESTS AT OUR SCHOOL SITES ARE A MITIGATING STRATEGY.
MASK WEARING IS A MITIGATION STRATEGY, OF COURSE, DISTANCING AS A MITIGATION STRATEGY.
THIS IS ANOTHER MITIGATING STRATEGY.
WE HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLY, INCREDIBLY FORTUNATE THAT WE HAVE PCR TESTS IN ALL OF OUR SITES.
IT ALLOWS US WHEN SOMEONE PRESENTS WITH SYMPTOMS FOR THEM TO ACCESS A TEST, AND WE'LL CONTINUE TO WORK ON THAT AND PROVIDE THAT TO TO OUR STUDENTS AND OUR STAFF AND AT OUR OTHER SITES LIKE MAINTENANCE IN THE ESD.
IN THE LAST LESS THAN LESS THAN A MONTH, WE'VE HAD A SCHOOL CLOSURE.
WE'VE HAD ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE POSITIVE CASES.
EACH ONE OF THOSE POSITIVE CASES HAS A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF CONTACT TRACING THAT FOLLOWS IT.
WE'VE HAD 10 CLASSROOM CLOSURES, TWO EXTRA CURRICULAR CLOSURES.
THE NUMBER OF CLOSE CONTACTS THAT WE HAVE HAD TO INVESTIGATE BY THE SCHOOL STAFF HAS HAD TO INVESTIGATE IS ONE THOUSAND SIX HUNDRED AND FIFTY NINE CLOSE CONTACTS.
AND THEN THE NUMBER OF QUARANTINED IN THE LAST ABOUT TWENTY SEVEN DAYS IS SEVEN HUNDRED AND FIVE.
ON THE RIGHT HERE IS BY ZIP CODE IN OUR DISTRICT WHERE THOSE PCR TESTS ARE HAPPENING.
BALDERAS MENTIONED THIS A LITTLE BIT, THIS HAS BEEN ONGOING WORK, WE DO HAVE A MOA WITH SEATTLE VISITING NURSES AND CONSEQUENTLY WITH SNOHOMISH COUNTY HEALTH.
SEATTLE VISITING NURSES HAS BEEN AN AMAZING PARTNER FOR US, FOR ALL KINDS OF IMMUNIZATIONS, EVEN PRIOR TO COVID.
BECAUSE OF THEM, WE ARE ABLE TO OFFER A CLINIC THIS SUNDAY AT MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL AND DR. BALDERAS MENTIONED THIS.
WE DID COMMUNICATIONS LAST NIGHT TO ALL OF OUR DISTRICT FAMILIES AND THOSE SEVEN HUNDRED VACCINE DOSES THAT WE HAVE BECAUSE WE ASSURE A SECOND DOSE FILLED UP IN ABOUT AN HOUR.
I'M SURE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE WASHINGTON SCHOOL DISTRICT.
THEY WERE ONE OF THE FIRST TO OPEN UP SOME DOSAGES AND THEY FILLED UP IN SEVEN MINUTES, SEVERAL THOUSAND.
SO WE KNOW THAT THE DOSES ARE GOING FAST.
WE KNOW THAT KING COUNTY WAS ABLE TO ACQUIRE MANY MORE VACCINES THAN SNOHOMISH COUNTY DID, AND THAT'S WHY YOU SEE DISTRICTS TO THE SOUTH OF US AND IN KING COUNTY HAVING MORE CLINICS, THOSE KIND OF THINGS.
WE ARE STILL PUSHING ON ON THIS.
IN THE LAST THREE, I THINK, SCHOOL DAYS, I'VE BEEN IN FOUR MEETINGS THAT INVOLVED SNOHOMISH COUNTY HEALTH, SEATTLE VISITING NURSES, OUR PARTNERS IN MUKILTEO AND EVERETT AND THOSE KIND OF THINGS ADVOCATING AND PLANNING TO TRY TO GET DOSES HERE.
WE ARE WORKING COLLECTIVELY WITH SEATTLE VISITING NURSES AND SOUTH COUNTY FIRE, AND WE'RE HOSTING THIS VACCINE CLINIC AT MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL ON SUNDAY.
IF ANY OF YOU WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER AND BE THERE, WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU.
WE REALIZE IT'S A SUNDAY, BUT THIS VACCINE CLINIC IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT.
[00:35:04]
AND DR. KATIMS, I KNOW THAT YOU WERE AT THE FIRST ONE.THIS VACCINE CLINIC IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT BECAUSE IT IS IT IS FIVE TO 11 YEAR OLDS, SO IT'S INSIDE AND ALWAYS THEY'LL HAVE A PARENT WITH THEM.
SO THERE'S SOME MORE LOGISTICS TO THIS AND MOVING PEOPLE THROUGH AND BEING THOUGHTFUL.
AND ANY TIME WE'RE INSIDE DURING A PANDEMIC, THERE'S A LOT OF SPACING AND ALL OF THOSE THINGS.
BUT OUR STUDENT HEALTH MANAGER [INAUDIBLE] BIANCO AND I ARE GOING TO THE EVERETT CLINIC ON VETERANS DAY AND THEY ARE THEY HAVE SEVEN HUNDRED DOSES ALSO, AND WE'RE PARTNERING WITH THEM AND WE'RE GOING TO HELP WITH THAT CLINIC AND GET EYES ON IT IN THOSE KIND OF THINGS AND SOME LEARNINGS.
AND THEN WE'LL BE HERE AT MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL ON SUNDAY, AND SO WE HOPE TO GET MORE CLINICS UP AND RUNNING, AND IT'S BEEN WONDERFUL TO PARTNER WITH WITH ALL OF THE ENTITIES.
AND I HOPE THAT THE NEXT TIME WE'RE BACK IN FRONT OF YOU, THAT WE HAVE SEVERAL MORE VACCINE CLINICS SCHEDULED TO TOUCH BASE WITH YOU.
THE SEVEN HUNDRED FIRST DOSES ON THE 14TH ASSURES AND THEY HAVE THE ALREADY THE SCHEDULE FOR THE SECOND DOSE FOR THEIR CHILDREN SO THEY CAN GET THE COMPLETE VACCINE, WHICH IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO ALL OF US.
AND THEN IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER.
LET US KNOW AND WE'LL WE'LL MAKE ARRANGEMENTS TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN.
A QUICK UPDATE ON THE RETURN TO LEARN THERE WERE THERE'S A LARGE UPDATE FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH FOR K-12 SCHOOLS, AND WITHIN THAT THERE WAS SOME GUIDANCE THAT ALLOWED FOR A COUPLE OF OPTIONS AROUND QUARANTINE AND WE INVESTIGATED.
WE TALKED TO NEIGHBORING DISTRICTS AND MADE A DETERMINATION OF WHAT WE'RE GOING TO GO WITH.
MANY OF THE THINGS THAT WERE OUTLINED IN THAT GUIDANCE ARE THE SAME.
WANT TO REVIEW THEM SUPER QUICKLY.
AND THEN I'M GOING TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT THE ONE PIECE THAT IS DIFFERENT THAT WE'RE MOVING TOWARDS.
SO IF A STUDENT OR STAFF TEST POSITIVE FOR COVID 19, REGARDLESS OF THEIR VACCINATION STATUS, THEY HAVE TO ISOLATE FOR 10 DAYS.
THIS IS PART OF THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND SNOHOMISH COUNTY HEALTH.
THERE'S NO TEST REQUIRED TO LEARN OR TO COME BACK AS LONG AS YOU'RE NOT SHOWING ANY ACTIVE SYMPTOMS. SO IF YOU'RE POSITIVE, IT IS 10 DAYS OF QUARANTINE, THAT'S NON-NEGOTIABLE.
AND IF YOU'RE STILL SYMPTOMATIC ON DAY 10, THERE'S THERE'S SOME THINGS THAT WE GUIDE ON THAT.
SO WE WORK WITH SNOHOMISH COUNTY HEALTH AND WHOEVER TALKS TO THE PERSON WHO IS COVID POSITIVE OR THE PARENTS OF WE GIVE THEM THIS INFORMATION.
SO THE RETURN TO LEARN DEPARTMENT HEALTH UPDATE, THIS IS ONE PIECE IS THE CHANGE THAT WE TALKED A COUPLE OF, I GUESS IT WAS PROBABLY A MONTH AGO WHEN WE MOVED FROM THE 14 TO THE 10 DAY QUARANTINE.
THIS IS ANOTHER QUARANTINE CHANGE AND WE HAD TWO OPTIONS.
ONE WAS A TEST TO STAY, WHICH WE DECIDED NOT TO CHOOSE.
IT WOULD BE CONSISTENT TESTING FOR STUDENTS.
THE CHANGE THAT WE HAVE MADE AND THIS IS AGAIN FOR NOT FULLY VACCINATED STUDENTS OR STAFF .
IF THEY'RE FULLY VACCINATED, THAT'S ON THE NEXT SLIDE AND THERE'S SOME DIFFERENT RULES THAT APPLY THERE.
SO IF THEY'RE NOT FULLY VACCINATED STUDENTS OR STAFF AND THEY ARE A CLOSE CONTACT, THE STUDENT, THE PARENT OR GUARDIAN OR THE COULD STAY HOME FOR 10 DAYS.
THAT SAME AS WHAT WE HAVE RIGHT NOW.
OR THE NEW OPTION IS THE STUDENT GETS A MEDICALLY VERIFIED COVID 19 TEST ON EITHER DAY FIVE, SIX OR SEVEN.
IF THAT TEST IS NEGATIVE VERIFIED BY THE DISTRICT, THEY TURN THAT TEST IN OR THEY'VE TESTED WITH US AT A DRIVE THRU TESTING SITE.
THEN THAT PERSON CAN RETURN TO WORK OR SCHOOL ON DAY EIGHT.
SHORTENS THAT QUARANTINE PERIOD, WHICH IS THE RETURN TO LEARN.
WE WANT OUR KIDS IN FRONT OF US, ESPECIALLY IF THEY AREN'T COVID POSITIVE, AND WE'RE SHORTENING THAT QUARANTINE WITH SOME TESTING.
IF THEY ARE SHOWING SYMPTOMS. OF COURSE, IT'S LIKE YOU DEFAULT RIGHT BACK TO THE 10 DAYS OF QUARANTINE AND THOSE KIND OF THINGS.
SO WE KEEP A CLOSE EYE OUT FOR THAT.
SO THE ONE CHANGE IS THIS OPTION TWO.
IF STUDENTS OR STAFF ARE FULLY VACCINATED, THERE'S NO QUARANTINE TIME REQUIRED.
WE MONITOR FOR SYMPTOMS AND THERE'S NO TESTING OR ANYTHING NEEDED, SO IF SOMEBODY HAS BEEN A CLOSE CONTACT AGAIN, THEY DON'T HAVE TO TEST TO COME BACK, THEY COME BACK.
AND AS LONG AS THEY HAVE NO SYMPTOMS, WE'RE GOOD TO GO.
AND THEN IF THEY DO SHOW SYMPTOMS OR START TO SHOW SYMPTOMS, THEN WE ISOLATE FOR 10 DAYS FROM THE ONSET OF SYMPTOMS AND AFTER 10 DAYS, THEY COME BACK.
ANY QUESTIONS ON THAT? IT'LL HELP WE'LL GET KIDS BACK A LITTLE QUICKER, AND WE'LL CONTINUE TO WORK ON THAT AND GO FROM THERE.
ALL RIGHT, SO WE'VE DONE TO DATE SIX ROUNDS OF INTENT CHANGE REQUESTS FOR FAMILIES AND THE INTENT CHANGE REQUEST LINK IS STILL AVAILABLE ONLINE.
AND OF COURSE, SPACE AND APPROPRIATE STAFFING WILL IMPACT ANY KIND OF PLACEMENT DECISIONS, AND THE NEXT REVIEW WINDOW WILL BE OPEN NOW TO JANUARY 17TH.
AND WE'LL HAVE MESSAGING OUT TO OUR FAMILIES TO SAY THAT THE DEADLINE IS JANUARY
[00:40:01]
17TH.AND SO PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU FILL OUT THE FORM ONLINE ON OR BEFORE JANUARY 7TH.
AND WE JUST RECENTLY DID INTENT CHANGE MOVEMENTS ON NOVEMBER 8TH AND AND FEBRUARY START FEBRUARY 1ST WILL BE THE START DATE FOR STUDENTS IN THE NEXT ROUND.
AND SO IN OUR NOVEMBER INTENT CHANGE, THERE WERE SIXTY THREE REQUESTS FOR FAMILIES TO BE IN-PERSON AND WE MOVED THIRTY EIGHT STUDENTS TO REMOTE FROM IN-PERSON.
AND SO THE LAST ROUND, OUR FINAL ROUND WILL BE FEBRUARY 1ST.
WHY, WHY ARE STUDENTS MOVING FROM IN-PERSON TO REMOTE, DO WE KNOW? COULD BE A LOT OF A LOT OF DIFFERENT REASONS THERE.
IT COULD BE THE NUMBER OF POSITIVE COVID CASES, BREAKTHROUGHS, CASES AND ALL OF THOSE THINGS.
OUR PUBLIC DOES HAVE ACCESS TO OUR COVID DASHBOARD.
AND SO THERE'S STILL A LOT OF FEAR OUT THERE BECAUSE WE'VE GOT LITTLES WHO ARE NOT VACCINATED.
AND SO PERHAPS THAT'S THE REASON.
DR. JOUNG, I'M WONDERING WHAT IS THE IMPACT ON OUR STAFFING, IF ANY, WITH THIS THE CHANGES FROM IN-PERSON TO REMOTE AND BACK? YEAH, WE DIDN'T HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT, SO WE WERE ABLE TO APPROVE MOST OF THE MOST OF THE REQUESTS.
WHAT WE'RE FORESEEING IS NOW THAT OUR FIVE TO 11 YEAR OLDS WILL HAVE THE OPTION TO BE VACCINATED.
THERE MAY BE MORE REQUESTS FOR IN-PERSON AND THIS IS WHY THE CUTOFF DATE, EVEN THOUGH WE START FEBRUARY 1ST IN-PERSON FOR STUDENTS, WE NEED TO HAVE THAT DEADLINE OF JANUARY 7TH TO REVIEW STAFFING IMPLICATIONS AND SPACE ISSUES AND ALL OF THOSE THINGS.
AND WE NEEDED TIME AND WE'RE EXPECTING A LARGER NUMBER OF REQUESTS TO FOR IN-PERSON LEARNING.
AND SO WE'RE WORKING WITH DEBBIE AND HER TEAM IN H.R.
TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN FOR OUR FAMILIES.
THIS IS JUST A QUICK OVERVIEW FOR THE BOARD AROUND STAFFING, AS DIRECTOR KILGORE SAID, I TOO WAS PLEASED THAT THERE WERE A NUMBER OF NEW HIRES THAT YOU APPROVED TONIGHT.
SO WE HAVE BEEN BUSY GETTING PEOPLE INTO OPEN POSITIONS AS WELL AS SUBSTITUTES.
WE HAVE SOME POSITIONS THAT WE CALL FLOAT POSITIONS, LIKE IN CUSTODIAL, FOOD SERVICE WHERE WE HIRE THEM AND THEN WE DEPLOY THEM WHEN SOMEONE'S ABSENT OR WE NEED SOME ADDITIONAL HELP OR SUPPORT AND ALSO IN ATHLETICS.
IN OUR CERTIFICATED, WE STILL HAVE A FEW POSITIONS THAT WE ARE HIRING FOR, BOTH ON A CONTINUING AND A NON-CONTINUING BASIS, THE NON-CONTINUING ARE PRIMARILY TO COVER FOR INDIVIDUALS GOING OUT ON APPROVED AND PROTECTED LEAVES.
AND SO WE DO HAVE A COUPLE IN SPECIAL ED, OUR ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND SOME PARTIAL FTE IN SPANISH AND HEALTH AND FITNESS.
IN OUR CLASSIFIED, WE CONTINUE TO HAVE OPEN POSITIONS, PROBABLY THE MOST AS OF TODAY.
WE STILL HAVE 17 PARAEDUCATOR POSITIONS THAT WE'RE HIRING FOR.
WE JUST HAD AN ORIENTATION EARLIER THIS YESTERDAY FOR THE NEW ONES THAT WE HIRED AND BRINGING THEM ON.
AND YOU CAN SEE IN ALMOST EVERY ONE OF OUR CLASSIFIED POSITIONS, WE HAVE AT LEAST ONE OR MORE OPENINGS.
ONE OF THE THINGS TYPICALLY BY THIS TIME IN MORE NORMAL YEARS IS ANY POOLS THAT WE HAVE POSTED LIKE FOR HARD TO FILL AREAS, SPECIAL ED, EL, SECONDARY MATH AND SCIENCE.
WE CLOSE THAT FOR THE YEAR AND THEN IN THE SPRING, WE OPEN UP POOLS AGAIN.
AND ONE OF THE STRATEGIES THAT WE'RE USING IS WE'RE CONTINUING TO KEEP ALL OF OUR POOLS OPEN AND ESTABLISH SOME ADDITIONAL POOLS.
SO AS WE'RE ADVERTISING AND DOING RECRUITMENT AND OUTREACH, IT SAVES SOME TIME BY IF PEOPLE HAVE AN APPLICATION IN THE POOL, THEN WHENEVER THERE'S AN OPENING, THE HIRING ADMINISTRATOR COULD GO STRAIGHT TO THE POOL AND LOOK TO SEE WHO'S AVAILABLE.
SO TRYING TO BE MORE TIMELY IN KEEPING THOSE POOLS OPEN.
[00:45:02]
AND SO CURRENTLY WE DO HAVE A POOL FOR NURSES, BOTH ON THE CERTIFICATED AND CLASSIFIED SIDE.AND AS WE'VE SHARED WITH YOU BEFORE, WE'RE CONTINUOUSLY LOOKING FOR BUS DRIVERS CUSTODIAL AND FOOD SERVICE, BOTH ON FOR PERMANENT OR CONTINUING POSITIONS, AS WELL AS SUBSTITUTES.
WE HAVE KEPT OUR ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY POOLS OPEN, AND THEN WE'LL CONTINUE WITH OUR HARD TO FILL AREAS AS WELL.
JUST CURIOUS WHAT I'M TALKING TO OTHER PEOPLE FOR THE CLASSIFIED POSITIONS.
WHAT IS KIND OF A RANGE OF HOURLY WAGES FOR THE CLASSIFIED ONES THAT WE HAVE OPEN ? THE, SOME OF THEM START AROUND 22 TO 25 AND COULD GO UP IN MORE LIKE IN OUR TRADES, SOME OF OUR [INAUDIBLE] COULD GO UP TO FORTY FOUR, FORTY FIVE DOLLARS AN HOUR.
SO THERE'S A WIDE RANGE OF THAT AND ONE OF THE ITEMS THAT WILL BE BEFORE THE BOARD AT YOUR NEXT MEETING, AS WE'RE ALSO INCREASING OUR PARAEDUCATOR SUBSTITUTE RATE THAT MAKES US VERY COMPETITIVE WITH NEIGHBORING DISTRICTS AS WELL.
SO WE'LL BE DOING SOME ADVERTISING AND SOME PERSONAL OUTREACH AND LETTERS, COMMUNICATING THAT AND INVITING PEOPLE TO JOIN OUR TEAM.
ALL RIGHT, THIS IS ME, HARMONY HERE, COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER.
SO WE ARE EXCITED THAT WE CAN ANNOUNCE THAT WE ARE SAFELY SINGING ONCE AGAIN.
SO AS YOU KNOW, COVID 19 CHANGED THE WAY OUR STUDENTS COULD SING IN ELEMENTARY MUSIC CLASSES.
THE NEW REQUIREMENT IS A THREE PLY MEDICAL GRADE MASK, WHICH MEANS STUDENTS WERE UNABLE TO SING INSIDE UNTIL WE GOT THIS ORDER OF MASKS.
SO THE NEXT SLIDE, I BELIEVE CHARELL WORKED HIS MAGIC, AND WE HAVE JUST A LITTLE VIDEO OF A GLIMPSE INTO A MUSIC CLASSROOM BECAUSE IT'S JUST SO SPECIAL TO SEE THAT.
IT WAS VERY EXCITING TO SEE THOSE KIDS HAVING FUN AND ANY TIME WE CAN SHOW YOU A LITTLE PEEK INSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM, WE ARE GOING TO DO THAT AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY WE HAVE.
SO THANK YOU FOR THAT AND I THINK GREG HAS THE NEXT SLIDE.
VERY EXCITING TO BE ABLE TO TALK TO YOU TONIGHT ABOUT SOMETHING OTHER THAN COVID AND LET YOU ALL KNOW THAT OUR EDMONDS-WOODWAY HIGH SCHOOL BOYS AND GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS WERE NAMED ACADEMIC STATE CHAMPIONS FOR THE THREE A CLASSIFICATION.
THE BOYS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM HAD A GPA OVERALL GPA OF THREE POINT NINE THREE EIGHT AND THE GIRLS TEAM HAD THREE POINT NINE NINE TWO.
SO WE'RE VERY PROUD OF THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THOSE STUDENT ATHLETES AND THE EXCELLENT JOB THEY'RE DOING BOTH ON THE COURSE AND IN THE CLASSROOM.
AND I ALSO WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT WE JUST COMPLETED THE STATE CROSS-COUNTRY MEET THIS LAST WEEKEND AND MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL BOYS FINISHED IN THE TOP IN THE TOP.
THEY FINISHED 18TH IN THE TOP 20 AND THE EDMONDS-WOODWAY GIRLS FINISHED EIGHTH OVERALL OUT OF 20.
AND SO AGAIN, VERY EXCITED ABOUT THE THE PERFORMANCE OF THOSE TEAMS, AS WELL AS WE HAD SEVERAL INDIVIDUAL STUDENT ATHLETES THAT ALSO THAT ALSO WENT AND REPRESENTED THEIR SCHOOLS AS WELL.
SO WE ARE WRAPPING UP THE FALL SPORTS SEASON.
WE HAVE VOLLEYBALL AND FOOTBALL STILL GOING ON AND SWIMMING AS WELL.
WE ALSO, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, WE'LL BE STARTING WINTER SPORTS.
[00:50:03]
SO WE'RE WE'RE READY TO MOVE INDOOR, SO JUST A QUICK UPDATE ABOUT HOW OUR ATHLETIC TEAMS ARE DOING.ANY QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD WE CAN ANSWER? I DID HAVE ONE QUESTION FOR DANA.
AS WE'RE HEADED INTO SORT OF COLD AND FLU SEASON.
WHAT WILL FAMILIES BE EXPECTING? WHAT CAN THEY EXPECT FROM OUR OUR COVID PROTOCOLS? OUR COVID PROTOCOLS STAY CONSISTENT, SO WE DO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO GET THE FLU VACCINE BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY MANY OF THE FLU SYMPTOMS MIMIC AS COVID SYMPTOMS, AND SO ANY SYMPTOMS THAT ARE COVID LIKE WHICH THERE IS A LAUNDRY LIST OF CAUSE STUDENTS TO OUR STAFF TO HAVE TO STAY HOME.
SO WE DO ABSOLUTELY ENCOURAGE THAT.
AND THEN, OF COURSE, THE PCR TESTING THAT WE HAVE AVAILABLE AT THE BUILDING.
SO THEN YOU CAN RULE THAT OUT.
I KNOW THAT WE'RE STARTING TO SEE SOME COLDS AND THOSE KIND OF THINGS IN OUR BUILDINGS.
BUT IF THEY DO PRESENT WITH SYMPTOMS, THEN THEY THEN WE DO SEND THEM, WE DO SEND STUDENTS OR STAFF HOME.
THAT'S WHAT GETS REALLY COMPLICATED NOW.
SO WE JUST ENCOURAGE THE VACCINES FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO ACCESS THAT AND ALSO THE FLU VACCINE.
AND WE'VE HAD ON SITE FLU VACCINES AGAIN WITH SEATTLE VISITING NURSES, WHICH HAS BEEN WONDERFUL.
I JUST WANT TO THANK ALL OF THE STAFF.
YOU KNOW, DANA, I'M LOOKING AT YOU.
YOU HAVE A HUGE JOB IN TERMS OF OVERSEEING OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM, TEACHING AND LEARNING SPECIAL EDUCATION.
BUT YOU'RE RIGHT IN THERE, YOU KNOW, WORKING ON ALL OF THOSE COVID PROTOCOLS AND DATA.
HARMONY, YOU'RE BRINGING IN ALL THIS MUSIC TO SHOW US IN THE CLASSROOM, WHICH IS SO HEARTWARMING.
GREG, YOU'VE BEEN GREAT ON KEEPING UP YOUR WHOLE PART AND THEN SHARING THE ATHLETICS PIECE WITH US BECAUSE WHEN WE TALK ABOUT KIDS FEELING LIKE THEY BELONG, IT'S ALL OF THOSE THINGS THAT ARE PART OF IT.
AND SO I JUST KNOW HOW HARD IT IS FOR EVERYBODY TO KEEP UP.
YOUR REGULAR JOBS WERE SO HARD.
SO I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU BECAUSE WE REALIZE HOW MUCH YOU'RE DOING AND THAT HOPEFULLY IT'LL START GETTING MORE INTO YOUR REGULAR JOBS AND LESS INTO THE HEALTH PART.
BUT IT'S BEEN A LONG, A LONG HAUL, AND WE APPRECIATE IT BECAUSE YOU GUYS ARE JUST AMAZING.
AND DR. KILGORE, CAN WE ASK THE THE STUDENT ADVISORS, DO THEY HAVE ANY COMMENTS? YOU READ MY MIND IF THERE ARE ANY STUDENTS WHO WANT TO CHIME IN, NOW'S A GOOD TIME.
OR IF YOU WANT TO WAIT TILL LATER, THAT'S OK, OK, AS WELL.
OH, SURE, I CAN GO [INAUDIBLE].
I THINK, FIRST OF ALL, LIKE I APPRECIATE ALL THE WORK THAT'S GONE IN, I'VE SEEN FIRSTHAND KIND OF THE CRAZINESS OF STAFF SHORTAGES AND THE MADNESS OF THE BUILDING ADMINISTRATION, AND I CAN'T EVEN STRESS HOW GRATEFUL I AM FOR BUILDING AND THE ADMIN.
I THINK THE THING I DID WANT TO MAKE A COMMENT ON THAT KIND OF FITS IN THIS EXACT CATEGORY IS WHILE I'VE REALLY APPRECIATED THE FACT THAT WE'VE HAD THESE EVENTS HAPPENING AND ATHLETICS HAVE THIS YEAR REALLY TAKEN OFF, AND I KNOW THAT FOR MANY, THAT'S BEEN A HUGE LIFESAVER, HONESTLY, BECAUSE IT IS REALLY WHAT KEEPS PEOPLE GOING IN SCHOOLS.
I THINK THERE IS A LITTLE BIT OF A MIXED MESSAGE THAT STUDENTS ARE FEELING, ESPECIALLY IF THEY'RE NOT IN ATHLETICS.
SO A REALLY GOOD EXAMPLE OF THIS IS, LIKE MANY THAT KNOW [INAUDIBLE] HIGH SCHOOL KNOW HOW IMPORTANT JAM SESSION IS TO EACH YEAR.
AND FOR THOSE THAT DON'T KNOW, JAM SESSION IS THE KICKOFF OF THE WINTER SPORTS SEASON THAT HAPPENS EACH YEAR AT [INAUDIBLE] HIGH SCHOOL, AND IT IS ONE OF THE VERY MANY EXAMPLES OF THIS IN THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS THAT HAVE COME UP.
BUT YOU KNOW, WE ORIGINALLY HAD PLANNED TO GO THROUGH WITH THE EVENT, AND I KNOW LIKE WITH COVID AND EVERYTHING LIKE THAT, LIKE IT'S REALLY DIFFICULT TO PULL OFF EVENTS LIKE THIS.
BUT ORIGINALLY IT WAS LIKE, OK, YOU KNOW, SPORTS CAN HAVE SPECTATORS AND EVERYTHING LIKE THAT, SO WE SHOULD BE FINE.
AND UP UNTIL A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO, WE WERE FULL STEAM AHEAD EVEN WITH THE SHORT NOTICE.
AND JUST LIKE PLANNING TO KEEP THINGS KIND OF NORMAL BECAUSE IT IS ONE OF THE MOST, IT BRINGS COMMUNITIES TOGETHER IN A REALLY STRONG WAY AND WE FIGURED, WELL, SOCIAL EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING.
[00:55:01]
THIS IS ONE REALLY GOOD WAY OF DOING IT.BUT YOU KNOW, A COUPLE DAYS AGO THAT WE HAD THAT PULLED THE PLUG ON THAT JUST BECAUSE THE [INAUDIBLE] GUIDELINES AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
SO I THINK THERE IS A LITTLE BIT OF FRUSTRATION AND A LITTLE BIT OF LIKE UNCERTAINTY OF WHAT CAN HAPPEN IN TERMS OF IN-PERSON EVENTS AND WHAT CAN'T HAPPEN AND WHAT LIKE THE DIFFERENTIATION BETWEEN THEM.
IF IN TERMS OF, YOU KNOW, FOLLOWING GUIDELINES AND BEING ABLE TO HOST EVENTS AND THEN LIKE OTHER GROUPS NOT BEING ABLE TO DO THAT.
SO I THINK THERE'S A LITTLE BIT OF A MIXED MESSAGE COMING TO LIKE STUDENTS AND STAFF ALIKE.
AND I THINK THAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND TO REALLY SOLIDIFY THE MESSAGE THAT'S GOING OUT LIKE IN TERMS OF WHAT CAN HAPPEN AND WHAT CAN'T HAPPEN AND WHICH EVENTS CAN BE HELD BECAUSE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING IS SO IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW.
AND I THINK THE NORMAL THINGS THAT WE DO, THE MORE NORMALIZED WE CAN MAKE IT.
GIVEN THE SITUATION WE'RE IN RIGHT NOW, YOU KNOW, THE BETTER AND JUST CLEAR COMMUNICATION ON THAT WOULD BE AMAZING.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS BEFORE WE MOVE ON? OK.
NEXT, WE HAVE A REPORT ON OUR STRATEGIC PLAN.
SO THANK YOU, BOARD, AND HAVE HARMONY AND THE TEAM DRIVE A BIT, BUT THE BOARD'S SEEN OUR STRATEGIC PLAN A FEW TIMES NOW IN THIS LATEST ITERATION OF THE PLAN.
SO AGAIN, THIS IS GOING TO BE THE PATH THAT WE LAY FOR THE NEXT FEW YEARS.
AGAIN, OUR GOAL IS TO HAVE THIS BE A LIVING DOCUMENT THAT IT'S A THAT WE CONTINUE TO TO REVIEW AND LOOK AT AND HAVE METRICS ATTACHED TO IT.
WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO SEE TONIGHT IS REALLY THE HIGH LEVEL PLAN.
THERE'S GOING TO BE STILL ACTION PLANS SET FORTH UNDERNEATH EACH SPECIFIC ACTION STEP.
THAT'S NEED TO BE PLAYED OUT AND STILL CREATED.
WE WISH WE WOULD HAVE HAVE THAT DONE BY NOW, BUT IT JUST IT'S OUR GOAL'S TO BE DONE WITH THIS BY THE END OF THE YEAR AND MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE SOMETHING PRESENT TO THE BOARD.
BUT WE DO WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE APPROVE THE HIGH LEVEL GOALS TODAY OR THIS THIS MONTH AND THEN CONTINUE TO WORK IN TERMS OF WHAT ARE OUR PRIORITIES SO WE CAN CAN.
SO WE CAN FRAME UP THOSE THOSE ACTION PLANS UNDERNEATH THE BROADER GOALS.
NEXT STEP NICK'S NEXT [INAUDIBLE].
THE BACKGROUND AGAIN, WE'VE BEEN DOING THIS FOR A WHILE NOW.
I KNOW THERE WAS A PAUSE WHEN I ARRIVED.
THERE WAS A THERE WAS A PAUSE WHEN I ARRIVED BECAUSE OF COVID.
BUT WE REALLY THIS IS SOMETHING THAT'S BEEN GOING ON FOR A FEW YEARS NOW, THE STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS AND SOMETHING THAT WAS LED BY DISTRICT ADMIN, SOME THAT ARE NO LONGER HERE AND SOME ON THIS BOARD, AS WELL AS MUCH OF THE COMMUNITY THAT WAS MANY OF THE COMMUNITY THAT WERE THAT WERE INVOLVED IN THE STRATEGIC PLANNING ELEMENT.
BUT THIS PAST YEAR AND THIS YEAR, HELPING FRAME THE STRATEGIC PLAN AND MAKING SURE THAT AGAIN, WE SOUGHT YOUR INPUT AS A BOARD AND WE'LL CONTINUE TO DO SO TO MOVE FORWARD AND AGAIN GROUNDING THE DISTRICT IN OUR NORTH STAR.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE TALK A LOT ABOUT IN OUR DISTRICT IS HAVING A COLLECTIVE NORTH STAR AND UNDERSTANDING THAT WE'RE CLEAR DIRECTION TO WHERE WE'RE HEADING.
AND THAT'S SOMETHING THAT A STRATEGIC PLAN DOES PROVIDE.
AND WE KNOW THAT IT'S NOT A WE EXPECT IT TO BE FLUID.
IF THINGS MORPH AND CHANGE, WE NEED TO.
BUT WE DO NEED A STRATEGIC PLAN FOR THAT COLLECTIVE NORTH STAR.
AGAIN, AS WE TALKED ABOUT, WE'VE HAD A LOT OF VOICE IN A VARIETY OF STAKEHOLDERS, INCLUDING KIDS, STAFF, FAMILY AND OF COURSE, THE BOARD.
AND THIS IS WHY WE TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE WHY, WHAT IS OUR WHY AND WHY DO WE DO WHAT WE DO AND WHY DO WE NEED A STRATEGIC PLAN? AGAIN, OUR WHY IS REALLY TO BE.
TO BE HERE TO CREATE THE BEST POSSIBLE STUDENT SO THEY CAN DEFINE THEIR OWN SUCCESS.
I THINK THAT'S ONE OF THE CRITICAL ELEMENTS THAT'S HAVING KIDS BE ABLE TO DEFINE THEIR OWN SUCCESS.
BUT FOR US TO BE ABLE TO HAVE THE STRUCTURES SO THEY CAN HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY SO THEY CAN DEFINE THEIR SUCCESS, AND THAT'S ALWAYS OUR COLLECTIVE GOAL BECAUSE NOT EVERY STUDENT IS GOING TO GO ON TO A FOUR YEAR COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY.
[01:00:02]
EVERY STUDENT WANTS TO, NOR NEEDS TO.THAT'S SOMETHING THAT THAT'S GOING TO CONTINUE TO CHANGE IN OUR BROADER EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS. SO HAVING AN OPPORTUNITY FOR KIDS TO BE ENGAGED IN SOMETHING THAT THEY'RE PASSIONATE ABOUT, THAT THEY CARE ABOUT.
AND THE GOAL IS BY THE TIME THEY GET TO THEIR 13TH YEAR THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO DEFINE THEIR OWN SUCCESS AND WE PROVIDED THEM THE OPPORTUNITIES ALONG THE WAY TO HAVE THE SKILLS SO THEY CAN BE SUCCESSFUL IN WHATEVER THAT DEFINITION THAT THEY AGAIN, THAT THEY DEFINE THEMSELVES.
SO THIS IS WHERE THE HOW AGAIN, JUST BEING VERY INTENTIONAL IN OUR ACTIONS.
AND ONE OF THE THE ITEMS THAT WE REALLY WORK TOWARDS IS THE SENSE OF DEFINING THE BELONGING.
I MEAN, THAT'S ONE THING THAT WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO BE CENTERED ON.
THAT'S GOING TO BE PART OF OUR CENTER GOAL HERE IS ENSURING THAT WE HAVE FOLKS THAT BELONG BECAUSE BELONGING, IT'S VERY DIFFERENT THAN BEING INCLUDED.
IT'S A VERY DIFFERENT THAN HAVING OPPORTUNITIES OR HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE ENGAGED OR POTENTIAL TO BE ENGAGED.
BELONGING, IT'S REALLY DEFINED BY THE PERSON.
WHETHER IT'S A PARENT, WHETHER IT'S A KID, WHETHER IT'S A STAFF MEMBER, THEY DEFINE BELONGING, DO THEY FEEL THAT THEY BELONG ON OUR CAMPUSES? DO THEY FEEL THAT EACH DOES EVERY STUDENT FEEL THAT THEY BELONG IN EACH CLASSROOM, THAT THEY ARE SCHEDULED IN SECONDARY OR IN EVERY CLASSROOM AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL? OR DO PARENTS FEEL THAT THEY BELONG WHEN THEY COME ONTO OUR CAMPUSES? WE'RE EXTREMELY DIVERSE DISTRICT, AND I WILL SAY THIS OFTEN AND I'LL SAY THIS PROUDLY.
OUR DIVERSITY IS OUR SUPERPOWER.
OUR DIVERSITY IN OUR IN OUR IN OUR IN OUR COMMUNITIES, IN OUR STUDENT BODY.
AND BUT WITH THAT SUPERPOWER IS ENSURING THAT THERE'S A SENSE OF BELONGING AND MAKE.
AND AGAIN, THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO STRIVE FOR BECAUSE WE FEEL THAT ONCE THE STUDENT FEELS THAT THEY BELONG, THAT MEANS THAT THEY'RE GOING TO BE MORE ENGAGED AND THAT WE'RE ABLE TO MEET THEIR NEEDS, NOT JUST THEIR NEEDS, BUT ALSO THEIR FAMILIES' NEEDS.
I KNOW THAT IN EDUCATION, WE SPEAK A LOT OF JARGON, AND MTSS IS THE MULTI-TIERED SYSTEM OF SUPPORT.
THE SYSTEM REALLY IS JUST MAKING SURE WE'RE MEETING THE NEEDS OF KIDS BOTH ACADEMICALLY AND BEHAVIORALLY.
AND IT USED TO BE RESPONSE TO INTERVENTION.
I THINK THIS DISTRICT, WE HAD MTI, WE'VE HAD A VARIETY OVER THE YEARS, BUT IN THE SIMPLEST FORM, IT'S REALLY MEETING THE MEETING KIDS WHERE THEY'RE AT BOTH ACADEMICALLY AND BEHAVIORALLY.
AND THAT'S THE WORK THAT OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM HAS BEEN WORKING ON WITH ED NORTHWEST.
VERY THANKFUL FOR THE GATES FOUNDATION FOR THEIR SUPPORT TO BE ABLE TO CONDUCT THIS WORK.
AND THIS IS SOMETHING WE'VE BEEN WORKING TO CONTINUE TO FRAME UP BECAUSE AGAIN, WE'RE NOT THERE YET.
WE'LL CONTINUE THAT WORK BECAUSE THIS IS THE IMPORTANT WORK TO ENSURE THAT WE'RE ABLE TO GET KIDS WHERE THEY'RE AT.
I TALKED ABOUT THIS, AND I THINK IT'S.
AND THE WAY WE DEFINE BELONGING, I'M NOT GOING TO READ TO YOU, IT'S RIGHT THERE FOR ANY OF YOU, BUT IT'S SOMETHING THAT YOU'VE SEEN THIS BEFORE.
BUT TO REALLY HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO WHERE KIDS REALLY ARE ABLE TO COME TO US.
IN THE SKIN THAT THEY'RE IN AND HAVE A TRUE SENSE OF SELF IN OUR SCHOOL SYSTEM.
SO THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE TRULY BELIEVE IN AS A SYSTEM, AND THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WE'RE GOING TO STRIVE FOR.
AS STAFF HAVE STATED EARLIER TODAY, IT'S IT'S THINGS ARE NESTED IN A SOLID SCHOOL SYSTEM AND THEY'RE NESTED WITH THE VISION OF YOU, THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS THAT CREATE, HELP CREATE AND DEFINE THE VISION WHICH BECOMES THE STRATEGIC PLAN, THE STRATEGIC PLAN ELEMENTS.
THAT CARRIES DOWN AND TRICKLES DOWN INTO THE BROADER SYSTEM, INCLUDING OUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS, AS YOU HEARD EARLIER TODAY DURING OUR STUDY SESSION AND OUR DAILY ACTIONS TOWARD THOSE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS.
EVERYTHING IS NESTED, BUT EVERYONE KNOWS THE GOALS, WHETHER IT'S THE COLLECTIVE GOAL AS A SCHOOL SYSTEM OR THE COLLECTIVE GOALS AS A SCHOOL OR A GRADE LEVEL TEAM AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL OR A CONTENT LEVEL TEAM AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL.
I THINK THAT IS THE THE POWER OF A STRATEGIC PLAN IS THAT THERE'S A COLLECTIVE
[01:05:05]
UNDERSTANDING OF WHERE WE'RE HEADING, BUT IT'S BROKEN DOWN IN CHUNK OUT BY LEVEL AND AT THAT CLASSROOM LEVEL, WHICH MAKES THE ULTIMATE DIFFERENCE, AGAIN, THE GOAL OF US ALL STRATEGIC PLANS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR KIDS AT THE CLASSROOM LEVEL AND HAS SOMETHING THAT WILL.WE'LL GO TO OUR GOALS HERE AND MAYBE HAVE HARMONY AND THE TEAM, CHIME IN ON THIS ONE.
YEAH, I'M HAPPY TO TAKE THIS ONE.
SO WE HAVE WE HAVE GOALS FOCUSED AROUND OUR STUDENTS, OUR STAFF AND OF COURSE, OUR FAMILIES AND COMMUNITY.
SO THE GOAL FOR OUR STUDENTS IS TO BUILD AND SUSTAIN AND INSTRUCTIONAL SYSTEM THAT PROMOTES A LEARNING CULTURE OF HIGH EXPECTATIONS, BELONGING AND A BELIEF IN ALL STUDENTS.
OUR EXPECTATION IS THAT EACH AND EVERY STUDENT GRADUATES READY FOR SUCCESS AT THE NEXT LEVEL IN SCHOOL CAREER AND GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP.
SO THE NEXT SLIDE SHOWS OUR OBJECTIVES AND AGAIN, TO DR.
THE PLAN IS MUCH MORE DETAILED, BUT TONIGHT WE REALLY WANTED TO FOCUS ON THE GOALS AND THE AND THE MAIN OBJECTIVES.
AND THEN THE WORK BEHIND THAT IS IN THE MORE DETAILED PLAN AND THE ACTION THAT WILL NEED TO TAKE PLACE, AS HE MENTIONED SO.
SO HERE WE HAVE FOUR OBJECTIVES.
YOU CAN SEE THEM THERE, BUT I DO THINK THERE'S VALUE IN SHARING THEM, SO I WILL GO AHEAD AND READ THEM.
SO TO CREATE A SAFE AND INCLUSIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT THAT PROMOTES A SENSE OF BELONGING FOR EACH STUDENT EACH YEAR.
ACHIEVE THIS BY PROVIDING SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING AND RIGOROUS ACADEMIC INSTRUCTION THAT ARE CULTURALLY AND LINGUISTICALLY AFFIRMING AND MATCH THE STUDENTS LEARNING NEEDS ACROSS ALL GRADE LEVELS, ENSURE EVERY KINDERGARTEN STUDENT IS READY FOR FIRST GRADE.
ENSURE EVERY STUDENT IS AT OR ABOVE GRADE LEVEL FOR MATH AND READING FROM KINDERGARTEN THROUGH 12TH GRADE AND INCREASE THE OVERALL PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS GRADUATING ON TIME TO AT LEAST 90 FOUR PERCENT BY 2026.
SO THE NEXT SLIDE IS OUR GOAL NUMBER TWO, WHICH IS ABOUT OUR STAFF, OUR CRITICAL AND IMPORTANT STAFF.
SO TO PROVIDE ENRICHMENT, TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR ALL STAFF MEMBERS TO CREATE THE CONDITIONS THAT EMPOWER STUDENTS TO GROW, THRIVE AND ACHIEVE EACH YEAR.
AND SO THE OBJECTIVES BEHIND THAT ON THE NEXT SLIDE ARE TO PROVIDE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO STAFF ON INCLUSIVE, EQUITABLE AND CULTURALLY AFFIRMING PRACTICES FOR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS.
DIVERSIFY STAFF TO REFLECT THE DIVERSITY OF OUR STUDENTS, INCREASE STAFF MEMBERS, WORK SATISFACTION BY SUPPORTING THEM AND MEETING THEIR GOALS FOR PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND STUDENT IMPROVEMENT.
AND THEN THE THIRD GOAL FOCUSES ON THE OTHER MAIN PART OF OUR COMMUNITY, WHICH IS OUR NEXT SLIDE CHARELL, WHICH IS OUR FAMILIES AND OUR COMMUNITY.
THESE ARE VITAL PARTS OF OUR OF OUR SYSTEM.
SO SO OUR GOAL IS TO EMBRACE RECIPROCAL PARTNERSHIPS WITH OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND FAMILIES, TO MEET THEM WHERE THEY ARE AND HONOR AND RESPECT THEIR CULTURAL AND LIVED EXPERIENCES DEMONSTRATE THAT WE UNDERSTAND THAT FAMILIES AND CARETAKERS ARE THE EXPERTS WHEN IT COMES TO THEIR CHILDREN AND PARTNER WITH THEM TO NURTURE STUDENTS' ACADEMIC, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL GROWTH.
AND THEN WE HAVE SOME OBJECTIVES BEHIND THAT GOAL ON THE NEXT SLIDE.
WHICH ARE TO PROVIDE TIMELY, ACCESSIBLE AND OPEN COMMUNICATION WITH FAMILIES AND TO BUILD AND MAINTAIN TRUST WITH OUR DIVERSE FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES BY SHOWING UP LISTENING AND BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS AS WE PARTNER TO PROMOTE OUR STUDENT SUCCESS AND OUR SHARED COMMITMENT TO THEIR FUTURE.
I KNOW THE BOARD HAS A FIRST READING LATER ON TODAY, AND WE'LL HAVE DISCUSSION THEN, BUT IS THERE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FROM THE BOARD RIGHT NOW? AND I KNOW THE BOARD SEEN THE HIGH LEVEL OBJECTIVES BEFORE.
I HAVE ONE COMMENT I APPRECIATE WE HAVE SEEN THIS BEFORE, AND SO I APPRECIATE BRINGING THIS UP AND LOOK FORWARD TO THE FUTURE DISCUSSION.
WHAT SCHOOL IS THAT LAST SLIDE? I WAS JUST CURIOUS WHAT SCHOOL THAT WAS, BECAUSE I LOVE THAT STAIRCASE AND I COULDN'T REMEMBER.
THAT'S A TRIVIA QUESTION I WANT.
I WANT TO SAY THAT I THINK IT'S ALDERWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL.
THAT LOOKS THAT LOOKS LIKE ALDERWOOD.
OK, YEAH, YOU SHOULD SEE WHEN THEY HAVE, THEY HAVE THE CONCERTS DOWNSTAIRS IN THAT COMMON
[01:10:01]
AREA AND PEOPLE JUST STAND ALL THE WAY UP UP THE STAIRS.SO I HAVE A QUESTION IS THE PROCESS THAT IF WE HAVE A COMMENT ON THE SPECIFIC PLAN THAT WE'RE GOING TO DO THAT UNDER THE DISCUSSION WHEN IT COMES UP FOR FIRST READING TONIGHT OR IS NOW THE TIME? IF WE COULD? DIRECTOR KATIMS THAT WOULD BE THAT'D BE GREAT.
THEN THAT WAY WE CAN MAKE SURE BECAUSE I THINK WE'RE GOING TO GO A LITTLE BIT MORE DETAIL THEN AS WELL.
THANK YOU, BOARD, FOR THAT, AND AGAIN, WE WILL HAVE A FIRST READ NO ACTION LATER ON UNDER NEW BUSINESS AND WE WILL GO MOVE HOPEFULLY TO GET APPROVAL LATER ON THIS MONTH AND.
BEGIN THE WORK IN TERMS OF PRIORITIZING YEAR ONE, TWO AND THREE AND SO ON OF THE ACTION PLANS.
THANK YOU, HARMONY, FOR THE WORK AND ALL THE REST OF THE STAFF THAT HELPED WITH THAT, TOO.
YES, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, THAT'S AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF WORK FOR ALL THE DATA AND AND PERSPECTIVES THAT YOU HAD TO BRING IN, AND I KNOW THAT YOU ALL GAVE A LOT OF THOUGHT TO IT AND IT LOOKS REALLY GOOD.
OUR NEXT ITEM IS UNFINISHED BUSINESS.
WE HAVE A SECOND READING TO ADOPT REVISED POLICY SIXTY TWO THIRTEEN, REIMBURSEMENT
[12. UNFINISHED BUSINESS 8:20 pm]
FOR TRAVEL EXPENSES.IS THERE A MOTION? I MOVE TO APPROVE.
IT'S BEEN MOVED AND SECONDED TO ADOPT THE REVISED POLICY 6213.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE I'D LIKE TO ASK FOR A ROLL-CALL VOTE, PLEASE.
THE MOTION PASSES AND POLICY 6213 IS APPROVED.
[13. NEW BUSINESS 8:25 pm]
NEXT, WE HAVE NEW BUSINESS OF OUR FIRST ITEM IS A SINGLE READING TO APPROVE THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS.IS THERE A A MOTION? THIS IS ANN MOVE TO APPROVE.
IT'S BEEN MOVED AND SECONDED TO APPROVE THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? I JUST WANT TO SAY I APPRECIATE THE ALL THE WORK THAT'S GONE INTO THAT AND TO LET THE PUBLIC KNOW THAT WE HAD A STUDY SESSION JUST BEFORE THIS MEETING AND THAT THE WORK THAT THIS IS JUST A WORK IN PROGRESS AND IT'S A GREAT BEGINNING TO HELP ALL THE SCHOOLS DO A VERY WELL ARTICULATED SYSTEM OF CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT, WHICH IS WHAT THE GOAL IS WITH SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN.
JOUNG AND AND THE OTHERS ON THE CABINET WHO WORKED SO HARD ON THIS AND ALL OF THE DISTRICT STAFF, AS WELL AS THE PRINCIPALS AND ALL THE LEADERSHIP TEAMS BECAUSE A LOT OF WORK GOES INTO THIS, BUT IT IS JUST A BEGINNING.
AND SO IT'S YOU CAN'T GET WORK DONE WITHOUT A GOOD PLAN.
SO WE GOT GOOD PLANS TO GET US GOING.
ANY OTHER DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE, I'LL GO AHEAD AND CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE, PLEASE.
THE MOTION PASSES AND THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS ARE APPROVED.
NEXT, WE HAVE A FIRST READING WITH NO ACTION TO APPROVE THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT 2021 TO 2026 STRATEGIC PLAN.
I'LL JUST OPEN IT UP FOR DISCUSSION.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION ON THE STRATEGIC PLAN? WE OPEN UP THE STRATEGIC PLAN AS WELL, SO WE CAN PEEK AT THAT.
[01:15:04]
THANK YOU.SO, SO OVERALL, I THINK IT LOOKS GREAT, I HAVE A FEW COMMENTS THAT ARE REALLY SMALLER SIZE THINGS, BUT I GUESS THIS IS THE TIME BEFORE WE FINALIZE IT FOR AT LEAST FOR US TO LOOK AT THEM AND DISCUSS.
ONE OF THE ONE OF THE QUESTIONS THAT I HAVE TO FOR YOUR.
THE REST OF THE BOARD'S CONSIDERATION IS UNDER GOAL ONE OBJECTIVE TWO.
SO THE ONE THE OBJECTIVE THAT SAYS ENSURE EVERY KINDERGARTEN STUDENT IS READY FOR GRADE ONE.
IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE STUDENT STRATEGY TWO POINT ONE AND TWO POINT TWO, AS WELL AS THE KEY PRACTICES UNDER THEM, HAVE A LOT OF OVERLAP AND SOME REDUNDANCY IN THEM.
AND THAT I THINK CLEANING THAT UP WOULD MAKE IT EASIER TO HAVE AN ACTION PLAN THAT WOULD BE CLEAR AND FOCUSED AND IT JUST ONE.
IDEA THAT I HAVE FOR US TO THINK ABOUT IS PERHAPS IF STUDENT, YOU KNOW, AND JUST AS AN EXAMPLE TO POINT OUT THE REDUNDANCY, IF YOU LOOK AT THE PHRASING OF STUDENT STRATEGY TWO POINT TWO AND THE KEY PRACTICE FOR TWO POINT ONE, IT'S ALMOST THE SAME WORDING.
SO I'M WONDERING IF IT WOULD BE CLEARER FOR FOR THE WORK THAT NEEDS TO TAKE PLACE IF STUDENT STRATEGY TWO POINT ONE, FOR EXAMPLE, COULD BE FOCUSED ON INTERNAL ALIGNMENT AND IMPROVEMENT OF PRACTICES AND PROGRAMS FOR OUR PRESCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN CLASSROOMS. AND THAT'S TWO POINT TWO WOULD BE FOCUSED ON MAKING THE PARTNERSHIPS WITH EXTERNAL PARTNERS, BRINGING IN ALL OF THOSE, THOSE PIECES THAT ARE EXTERNAL.
SO IF TWO POINT ONE WAS INTERNAL IN TWO POINT TWO IS EXTERNAL, IT MIGHT BE CLEARER AND EASIER FOR US TO HAVE AN ACTION PLAN THAT WOULD BE WELL ARTICULATED.
SO I JUST I WANT TO BRING THAT UP AS A POINT OF DISCUSSION FOR US.
AND I DON'T KNOW IF WE CAN PULL UP AT THE THE EXACT LANGUAGE IT'S IN THE STRATEGIC PLAN RIGHT NOW, EITHER HARMONY, IT'S IT'S A SCREEN 12.
SO THIS IS ANN, NANCY, WHERE WOULD YOU PUT STUDENT STRATEGY TWO POINT ONE SPECIFICALLY HIGHLIGHTS CULTURALLY AND CULTURALLY AND LINGUISTICALLY AFFIRMING OPPORTUNITIES? WOULD YOU MOVE THAT DOWN TO TO COMBINE IT WITH STUDENT STRATEGY TWO POINT THREE ABOUT TWO WAY CULTURALLY AND LINGUISTICALLY DIVERSE COMMUNICATION? NO, NO, BECAUSE I THINK TWO POINT THREE IS SPECIFIC TO FAMILIES, SO I WOULD KEEP TWO POINT THREE AS A SEPARATE THING.
I THINK TWO POINT ONE IS FINE, AS IS.
TO THINK ABOUT, BUT JUST PERHAPS REPHRASE IT OR ADD TO IT.
SO IT'S EVALUATE, DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT CULTURALLY AND LINGUISTICALLY AFFIRMING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS.
TO BUILD KINDERGARTEN READINESS SKILLS, MAYBE THAT CAN STAY THE SAME, BUT THEN UNDER KEY PRACTICES.
I WOULD TAKE TWO POINT ONE POINT ONE AND PUT IT UNDER AS A KEY PRACTICE FOR TWO POINT TWO.
I WOULD DO THAT FOR ALSO FOR TWO POINT ONE POINT TWO.
ACTUALLY, TWO POINT ONE POINT THREE IS ALSO THAT.
I WOULD KEEP TWO POINT ONE POINT FOUR, BUT I WOULD ADD SOMETHING ABOUT.
AND YOU SO I WOULD I WOULD ADD A NEW KEY PRACTICE UNDER TWO POINT ONE THAT SOMETHING ABOUT.
ACTUALLY, I WOULD PICK UP KEY PRACTICE TWO POINT TWO POINT TWO DEVELOP A LONG TERM PLAN FOR ALIGNING OUR INTERNAL PRESCHOOL PROGRAMS WITH OUR KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM AND PUT THAT UNDER TWO POINT ONE AND PERHAPS ADD SOMETHING ABOUT.
ENSURING SYSTEMATIC AND CONSISTENT CURRICULUM AND PROGRAMING THAT'S RESEARCH BASED WITH WHAT WHAT IS BEST KNOWN ABOUT EARLY CHILDHOOD AND PUT THAT UNDER TWO POINT ONE AND THEN UNDER AND THEN HAVE THE SECOND ONE BE ASSESSED STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO EVALUATE THEIR GRADE ONE READINESS AND ADD TO THAT SOMETHING LIKE.
AND DEVISE STRATEGIES FOR SUPPORT AND RESOURCES TO ADDRESS THE GAPS, THE NEEDS
[01:20:02]
THAT SURFACED FROM THAT ASSESSMENT.YOU KNOW, I SO APOLOGIZE, NANCY, BUT I'M LOST AT THIS POINT.
I KNOW I'M NOT DOING A GOOD JOB AT THIS.
WELL, BECAUSE I'M JUST WONDERING IF YOU COULD GET TO US AN EMAIL OR SOMETHING SO THAT I COULD ACTUALLY READ IT AND SEE IT AND COMPARE IT BECAUSE I'M HAVING TROUBLE KIND OF FIGURING OUT WHERE EVERYTHING GOES.
KATIMS, I COULD DO THAT WITH STAFF.
I KNOW THAT I TALKED TO STAFF ABOUT THIS AND WE CAN MORPH IT AND HAVE THE CURRENT AND THE AND I CAN RUN IT BY YOU BECAUSE I KNOW STAFF HAVE LOOKED AT IT AS WELL.
SO MAYBE IF I SEND SOMETHING TO THE BROADER BOARD HERE VERY SOON, I MEAN, WE HAVE TWO WEEKS.
BUT THAT WAY THE THE BOARD SEES WHAT YOU'RE PRESENTING BECAUSE IT DOES MAKE AGAIN.
AGAIN, WE CAN FIX IT TO MAKE IT EASIER TO READ AND MORE ALIGNED TO WHAT YOUR STATEMENTS ARE.
SO WHAT YOUR COMMENTS ARE, SO WE CAN DO THAT AS A STAFF.
SO ANN I HAD EARLIER SENT THIS TO DR.
KILGORE JUST TO LET HIM KNOW MY THINKING, WHICH IS WHY I THINK DR.
BALDERAS HAS ALREADY SHOWN IT TO STAFF.
IN OUR PROTOCOLS, I'M ALWAYS SO CAREFUL ABOUT WHAT I SAID TO THE WHOLE BOARD, SO.
YOU KNOW, IF DR. BALDERAS, YOU'LL HELP SORT OF MAKE MAKE THOSE REVISIONS AND THEN GET THAT OUT.
MY MY OTHER COMMENT IS KIND OF A GENERAL COMMENT, BUT I COULD GIVE EXAMPLES.
SO I KNOW THERE'S BEEN DISCUSSION ABOUT.
HOW WE'RE TRYING TO FIND THE LINE BETWEEN WHAT ARE KEY PRACTICES AND WHAT ARE ACTION STEPS THAT ARE MORE FINE GRAINED THAT COME UNDER THAT.
AND IT SEEMS TO ME THAT WE'RE A LITTLE INCONSISTENT AND THAT WE HAVE SOME KEY PRACTICES HERE THAT ARE SMALLER GRAINED.
SO, FOR EXAMPLE, UNDER GOAL TWO KEEP.
SO LET ME FIND THIS SORRY, SO THIS IS UNDER STAFF.
AND IT SAYS USE A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT MASTER CALENDAR AND SYSTEM FOR TRACKING.
IT SEEMS REALLY SPECIFIC AND NOT KIND OF HIGH LEVEL.
WE'VE HAD INPUT FROM SOME OF OUR TEACHERS ON A DIFFERENT KIND OF COMPARISON PIECE ABOUT THAT WE HAVEN'T MENTIONED.
UNDER THE PROGRAMING THAT WE'RE DOING ANYTHING ABOUT ETHNIC STUDIES AND TRYING TO MAKE THAT MORE INTEGRATED ACROSS THE DISTRICT.
AND YET WE DO REFER TO DOING DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAMS. DISTRICT WIDE.
AND SO I'M NOT QUITE SURE I SEE WHAT THE DIFFERENCE WOULD BE WITH ONE BEING A KEY PRACTICE AND ONE BEING SOMETHING THAT WOULD BE PERHAPS MORE OF AN ACTION STEP.
SO I'M JUST TRYING TO UNDERSTAND THE GRANULARITY SORT OF PROCESS OR PROTOCOL HERE.
IT'S STILL A WORK IN PROGRESS, DR.
KATIMS. I THINK THAT'S WHY WE, I THINK, ARE GOING TO CONTINUE TO DEFINE AND REFINE THE STRATEGIC PLAN BECAUSE I DON'T DISAGREE WITH YOU.
I THINK TO HELP WITH THAT SOLUTION IS WITH ETHNIC STUDIES IS TO ADD A STATEMENT THAT SAYS INCLUDING ETHNIC STUDIES AS PART OF THE STATEMENT.
SO AND WE WILL WORK ON THAT AND BRING IT BACK TO THE BOARD.
SO WHAT I WANTED YOU TO DO TONIGHT IS REALLY REVIEW THIS AS A BOARD AND WE CAN SEND YOU SOME AGAIN, MAYBE SOME SUGGESTED REVISIONS ON TOP OF THIS AND HAVE MORE DISCUSSION AT THE NEXT BOARD MEETING, BUT MY RECOMMENDATION IS TO INCLUDE SOME LANGUAGE THAT DOES STATE EXPLICITLY TO INCLUDE ETHNIC STUDIES.
THAT WAY IT IS THERE, IT'S MEMORIALIZED, IT'S HISTORICAL.
AND FROM THERE, WE DEVELOP THE ACTION PLAN UNDERNEATH THAT THAT ACTUALLY DEALS WITH ETHNIC STUDIES AND THE K-12 ROLLOUT BECAUSE I KNOW THERE'S A LOT OF WORK THAT'S BEEN DONE IN THAT IN THAT ARENA.
THAT MAKES SENSE TO ME AND THEN WOULD BE CONSISTENT WITH SOME OF THE OTHER THINGS THAT ARE IN HERE.
WELL, I MEAN, IF I IF I MAY, I THINK THERE'S SOME CONFUSION ALSO ABOUT LANGUAGE.
I MEAN, WHEN WE THINK OF MANY OF US THINK OF ETHNIC STUDIES AND I, WE'RE THINKING ABOUT A COURSE VERSUS A PROGRAMMATIC, YOU KNOW, A MOVE.
SO THAT'S WHY I READ WHEN I READ THE CULTURALLY AFFIRMING, I FORGOT WHAT THE
[01:25:03]
SPECIFIC LANGUAGE WAS THAT SEEMED TO REPRESENT.THE COURSE PLUS INTEGRATING, YOU KNOW, MATERIAL IN THE VARIOUS OTHER AREAS, IT DIDN'T I DIDN'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH IT, IT SEEMED PRETTY REPRESENTATIVE OF WHAT WE WERE TRYING TO DO.
NO, AND I SEE DUAL LANGUAGE AS A PROGRAM.
WE'RE NOT REFERRING TO JUST A SPECIFIC CLASS OR, YOU KNOW, I DON'T KNOW.
THAT'S HOW I READ IT WAS ONE WAS PROGRAM LEVEL AND THE OTHER THEY HAD LANGUAGE THAT SORT OF, TO ME, DID REPRESENT PROGRAM LEVEL OF OF INTEGRATING ETHNIC STUDIES THROUGHOUT K THROUGH 12.
DEBORAH DID YOU SEE THAT IN THE STRATEGIC PLAN? A REFERENCE TO THAT? YEAH, THERE WAS SOME LANGUAGE.
AND DR. BALDERAS, MAYBE YOU CAN REMIND ME THERE WAS LANGUAGE.
IT WAS IT DIDN'T SAY ETHNIC STUDIES SPECIFICALLY, BUT IT SAID, YOU GET TO THAT SLIDE, PLEASE.
IS IT JUST THE NEXT ONE? YEAH, I BELIEVE SO.
THERE'S QUITE A BIT OF DETAIL.
WAS IT? I FEEL LIKE I READ SOME LANGUAGE THAT.
NO THIS IS ON STAFF THAT DEFINITELY HAD TO DO WITH WHAT I THINK.
ARE WE ALL TIRED? YEAH, IT'S BEEN I THINK WE'VE BEEN TIRED FOR 22 MONTHS NOW, SO CAN WE FIND WHERE IS THAT? AS WE'RE LOOKING LOOKING THAT UP, YOU KNOW, IT'S LIKE THERE'S A LOT OF IT'S AN ADVISORY COMMITTEE WITH OSPI AND THE MOST RECENT SENATE BILL, THERE'S A LOT OF INFORMATION ON ETHNIC STUDIES IN GENERAL ON HOW WE INCORPORATE THAT.
IS IT IS IT SCREEN NUMBER NINE, SCREEN NUMBER 10? OR EVEN NUMBER 11? SO WHERE WHERE STUDENTS STRATEGY.
RIGHT? NO IT'S NOT FOR MULTI, IT IS STUDENTS ALONE, THOUGH.
NO, THIS IS FROM YOU'RE RIGHT ANN THIS IS ON SLIDE 10.
STUDENT STRATEGY ONE POINT TWO.
BECAUSE IT TALKS ABOUT ACHIEVING THE GOAL BY PROVIDING SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING AND RIGOROUS ACADEMIC INSTRUCTION THAT ARE CULTURALLY AND LINGUISTICALLY AFFIRMING.
SO TO ME, ETHNIC STUDIES WOULD NATURALLY FIT, AT LEAST TO ME FIT UNDER THIS PARTICULAR OBJECTIVE.
YEAH, AND THEN UNDER KEY PRACTICE, SUPPORT THE REVIEW AND UPDATING OF CURRENT CURRICULUM AND ONE POINT TWO POINT TWO PROVIDE INSTRUCTION.
THAT'S HOW I READ THAT, WAS THAT THAT WOULD BE INCLUSIVE OF OUR ETHNIC STUDIES EFFORTS.
I THINK ONE POINT TWO POINT TWO IS PROBABLY WHERE IT FITS.
I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE ACTUALLY CALL IT OUT.
WE SPENT A LOT OF TIME IN OUR DISTRICT TALKING SPECIFICALLY ABOUT ETHNIC STUDIES.
I THINK YOU COULD MODIFY ONE POINT TWO POINT TWO, AS DR.
BALDERAS SUGGESTED, PROVIDE INSTRUCTION THAT IS CULTURALLY AND LINGUISTICALLY AFFIRMING TO SUPPORT STUDENTS SENSE OF BELONGING, POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS AND ENGAGEMENT.
YOU COULD SAY SOMETHING, FOR EXAMPLE, THROUGH ETHNIC STUDIES.
K-12 ETHNIC STUDIES CURRICULUM.
SO LET'S IF I MAY HAVE STAFF, I CAN WORK WITH THIS WITH STAFF AND THEN BRING BACK AN UPDATED VERSION AS WELL.
WE LEAVE IT IN THE GOOD HANDS OF THE EDUCATION EXPERTS.
SO AGAIN, THIS IS THE FIRST READ FOR THE BOARD, ARE THERE OTHER QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS AND YOU KNOW I KNOW WE HAVE TWO WEEKS FOR FOR THIS, SO WE WILL I WILL WORK WITH
[01:30:04]
STAFF TO MAKE SOME REVISIONS AND SENT THIS TO THE BOARD.AND ALSO INCLUDED IN THE NEXT BOARD AGENDA AS A COMPARISON.
SO WE CAN WE CAN WE CAN DISCUSS AT THE NEXT BOARD MEETING AS A BOARD.
I THINK THAT IT'S MY SENSE THAT WE'RE VERY CLOSE TO SOMETHING THAT THE BOARD WOULD BE ABLE TO APPROVE.
SO, SO I DON'T KNOW THAT WE HAVE TO, YOU KNOW, WE COULD STILL COUNT ON TWO WEEKS FROM TONIGHT APPROVING THE STRATEGIC PLAN, IS THAT CORRECT BOARD? THIS IS ANN, I'M LEADING THAT WEEK, YES.
AND I SAW A THUMBS UP FROM DIRECTOR CHASE.
AND SOMEWHERE, DIRECTOR NOBLE, YOU HAVEN'T BEEN VERY CHATTY.
SO YOU'RE NOT ON MY FIRST SCREEN, BUT I SAW YOUR THUMBS UP.
NEXT, WE HAVE A SINGLE READING TO APPROVE BUDGET AUTHORIZATION FOR THE 2021 SAFETY AND SECURITY UPGRADES PROJECT AND IS IS THIS IT SAYS IT DOESN'T SAY ANY NO ACTION, BUT THIS WOULD BE OK.
IS THERE A MOTION? THIS IS ANN MOVE TO APPROVE.
IT'S BEEN MOVED AND SECONDED TO APPROVE THE BUDGET AUTHORIZATION FOR THE 2021 SAFETY AND SECURITY UPGRADES PROJECT.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? ED'S BEEN BUSY.
I'LL GO AHEAD AND CALL FOR A ROLL-CALL VOTE, PLEASE.
THE MOTION PASSES AND THE BUDGET AUTHORIZATION IS APPROVED.
NEXT, WE HAVE A SINGLE READING TO APPROVE THE BUDGET AUTHORIZATION FOR THE HVAC LIGHTING ROOF UPGRADES AT THE DISTRICT EDUCATIONAL SERVICE CENTER.
IS THERE ANY? DO I HEAR A MOTION? I MOVE TO APPROVE.
IT'S BEEN MOVED AND SECONDED TO APPROVE THE BUDGET AUTHORIZATION FOR THE UPGRADES AT THE ESC.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? I HAVE ONE WORD.
SHE'S STILL TRAUMATIZED BY BUCKETS OF WATER.
IS THERE ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION? OK, HEARING NONE, AND LET'S I'LL ASK FOR A ROLL-CALL VOTE, PLEASE.
THE MOTION PASSES AND THE BUDGET AUTHORIZATION FOR THE ESC UPGRADES IS APPROVED.
NEXT, WE HAVE A SINGLE READING TO APPROVE RESOLUTION TWENTY ONE DASH THIRTY TWO CERTIFICATION OF 2022 EXCESS PROPERTY TAXES, IS THERE A MOTION? I MOVE TO APPROVE.
IT'S BEEN MOVED AND SECONDED TO APPROVE RESOLUTION TWENTY ONE DASH THIRTY TWO.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE, I'LL ASK FOR A ROLL-CALL VOTE, PLEASE.
THE MOTION PASSES AND RESOLUTION TWENTY ONE DASH THIRTY TWO IS APPROVED.
NEXT, WE HAVE A SINGLE READING TO APPROVE RESOLUTION TWENTY ONE DASH TWENTY NINE FEBRUARY 2022 EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND OPERATIONS LEVY.
IS THERE A MOTION? HAS BEEN MOVED AND SECONDED TO APPROVE RESOLUTION TWENTY ONE DASH TWENTY NINE, FEBRUARY 2022 EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND OPERATIONS LEVY IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? I'D LIKE TO SAY THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT AND THAT THE DISTRICT WILL BE GETTING OUT
[01:35:05]
INFORMATION TO THE COMMUNITY, IT'S VERY IMPORTANT THAT THE COMMUNITY UNDERSTANDS THAT THIS IS NOT A NEW TAX THAT WE'RE VOTING ON AND THAT IT'S ESSENTIAL FOR THE FUNDING OF ALL OF THE THINGS OR MANY OF THE THINGS THAT WE DON'T CURRENTLY GET FUNDING FOR FROM THE STATE OR FEDERAL GOVERNMENTS.AND IT'S A REPLACEMENT OF WHAT OF THE TAX THAT WE'VE HAD PREVIOUSLY, AND IT WILL BE SAYING AT THE SAME OR SIMILAR LEVEL.
I HOPE I SAID THAT CORRECTLY, LYDIA.
OK, IF THERE'S NO FURTHER DISCUSSION, I'D LIKE TO ASK FOR A ROLL-CALL VOTE, PLEASE.
THE MOTION PASSES AND RESOLUTION TWENTY ONE DASH TWENTY NINE IS APPROVED.
NEXT, WE HAVE A SINGLE READING TO APPROVE THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT 2022 LEGISLATIVE PLATFORM.
DO I HEAR A MOTION? THIS IS ANN MOVE TO APPROVE.
IT'S BEEN MOVED AND SECONDED TO APPROVE THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT 2022 LEGISLATIVE PLATFORM, IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? JUST MY GRATITUDE FOR PUTTING THIS TOGETHER.
CAN WE JUST PULL IT UP SO EVERYBODY CAN SEE IT JUST AGAIN BEFORE WE VOTE ON IT AND THE THE LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEES MEETING, I SEE THIS AS A LIVING DOCUMENT SIMILAR TO OUR STRATEGIC PLANNING THAT WILL ALLOW US TO ADVOCATE TO THOSE THINGS THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO THE DISTRICT.
THE LEGISLATIVE WSSDA LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEES MEETING THIS COMING WEEKEND, AND I MAY HAVE SOME MORE INFORMATION ON ANY SPECIFIC LEGISLATION THAT MAY ALIGN WITH OUR LEGISLATIVE PLATFORM THAT WILL HELP US AS WE THINK ABOUT ADVOCATING IN THE FUTURE AND SPECIFICALLY WANTED TO CALL OUT THAT ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY PORTION WITH THE ELECTRIC BUSSES THAT I THINK GARY WAS WE WERE ALL TALKING ABOUT LAST TIME.
RIGHT, AND THIS DEFINITELY GIVES US SOMETHING CONCRETE TO TALK TO OUR ELECTEDS ABOUT.
I FORGET WHAT I'M TRYING TO ADVOCATE FOR.
SO IT'S NICE TO HAVE SOMETHING THAT THAT I CAN DRAW ON SPECIFICALLY.
I JUST WANT TO ADD MY THANKS TO CARIN AND EVERYBODY ELSE WHO WORKED ON THIS BECAUSE I THINK IT'S SUCCINCT, WELL WRITTEN.
FOCUS IS ON THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS AND LIKE DEBORAH SAID, GIVES US TALKING POINTS SO THAT WE CAN ALL BE ON THE SAME PAGE.
IS THERE ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE I'LL CALL FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE, PLEASE.
AYE AND THE MOTION PASSES AND THE 2022 LEGISLATIVE PLATFORM IS APPROVED.
[15. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS]
NEXT IS TIME FOR OUR COMMENTS.MAY I SEE THE GALLERY VIEW, PLEASE? BECAUSE I DON'T REMEMBER WHO ALL IS HERE.
I'D LIKE TO ASK THE STUDENTS, RITIKA, IF YOU'D LIKE TO, I SEE YOU FIRST.
IF YOU'D LIKE TO MAKE SOME COMMENTS.
FIRST OF ALL, QUICK SHOUT OUT TO EVERYONE ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND ALL THE STAFF THAT HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH THIS.
IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT IT'S BEEN LIKE OVER A YEAR SINCE DR.
I FEEL LIKE YOU'VE HAD 15 YEARS OF WORK IN THE LAST TWENTY TWO MONTHS, SO THANK YOU TO EVERYONE BECAUSE IT'S BEEN CRAZY AND IT WILL CONTINUE TO BE PROBABLY IN TERMS OF THE STRATEGIC PLAN.
I THINK ONE OF MY FAVORITE LINES HAS REALLY BECOME.
ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS, AND I THINK THIS IS A REALLY GOOD STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION WHEN IT COMES TO DIVERSITY.
IT STARTS WITH THE LITTLE THINGS IT STARTS WITH, YOU KNOW, MAKING SURE COMMUNICATION GOES OUT AND IS SUPER ACCESSIBLE IN EVERY FORM.
AND I KNOW I'VE BEEN TALKING TO HARMONY ABOUT THIS A LITTLE BIT.
BUT JUST LIKE WHEN IT COMES TO INCLUSIONARY PRACTICES AND MAKING SURE THAT PEOPLE FEEL INCLUDED, IT'S LITTLE THINGS STARTING WITH, YOU KNOW, USING CORRECT PRONOUNS OR
[01:40:02]
NOT MAKING THINGS SUPER GENDERED UNNECESSARILY OR USING OLD TEXT ON PHOTOS OR JUST LITTLE THINGS LIKE THAT THAT THEN LEAD TO MUCH BIGGER THINGS LIKE THE STRATEGIC PLAN.SO I APPRECIATE THAT THAT'S OUT THERE AND THAT WE'RE MAKING STEPS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN BECAUSE YOU KNOW IT, IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT.
AND I THINK SOCIAL EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING, IF THAT'S NOT THERE, THEN THERE'S NOTHING THERE AND THERE'S NO LEARNING HAPPENING IF SOCIAL EMOTIONAL WELLBEING AND MENTAL HEALTH IS NOT WELL.
THAT SAID, TO MY EARLIER POINT WITH THE EVENTS THIS YEAR, I THINK THAT'S ONE OF THE IT'S FRESH ON MY MIND RIGHT NOW BECAUSE OF, YOU KNOW, HAVING BEEN A PART OF A PLANNING COMMITTEE FOR LIKE AN EVENT IN THE LAST LIKE TWO WEEKS THAT WE HAD TO TRY TO PULL TOGETHER.
I JUST THINK IT'S JUST REALLY IMPORTANT TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR COMMUNICATION IN TERMS OF LIKE WHAT EVENTS ARE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN AND WHAT AREN'T ALLOWED TO HAPPEN AND MAKING SURE THAT THOSE PRACTICES ARE EQUITABLE BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY GROUPS AND SO MANY SITUATIONS AND EVENTS TRYING TO BE PULLED OFF RIGHT NOW.
AND JUST LIKE THE SENSE OF NORMALCY, WHILE ALSO HOLDING ON TO THE FACT THAT WE STILL ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC AND THAT WE NEED TO BE AWARE OF THAT STUFF.
AND SO I THINK JUST CLEAR COMMUNICATION AND CLEAR PRACTICES FOR EVERY AREA OF THIS AND JUST MAKING SURE THAT IT'S EQUITABLE AND THAT, YOU KNOW, PEOPLE ARE ABLE TO DO THE THINGS THAT ARE POSSIBLE ACROSS THE BOARD IS THE MAIN THING THAT HAS BEEN ON MY MIND.
BUT THANK YOU FOR ALL THE WORK.
AS ALWAYS, IT'S THREE MONTHS IN AND IT'S SO STILL SO GRATEFUL TO BE IN PERSON.
HOW ARE YOU? [INAUDIBLE] I'M HAVING TROUBLE HEARING YOU.
CAN YOU GUYS HEAR ME NOW? CAN YOU HEAR ME? WELL, I'M JUST REALLY EXCITED FOR WINTER SPORTS TO START AGAIN.
LAST YEAR, WE DIDN'T HAVE THE ENTIRE SEASON.
I KNOW WINTER SPORTS IS SUPER LONG.
I REALLY ENJOY LIKE THE ENTIRE SEASON, AND I'M REALLY GLAD WE GET TO PLAY AGAIN INDOORS, ESPECIALLY FOR LIKE BASKETBALL AND STUFF AND.
I'M REALLY GLAD WE HAVE THESE COVID CHECK INS AND TESTS SO THAT WE CAN KEEP THE THIS SEASON GOING.
AND I'M JUST REALLY HAPPY TO BE PART, BE PARTICIPATING IN SCHOOL EVENTS.
SO, YEAH, I JUST WANTED TO SAY I TALKED TO SOME FELLOW CLASSMATES TODAY AND SO.
JUST GENERALLY FOR SCHOOL AND STUFF, SHE SAID THAT LIKE SHE WISHES, THERE WAS LIKE A BETTER COMMUNICATION THROUGHOUT, AT LEAST OUR SCHOOL, BECAUSE SHE SAID, LIKE FOR THE SBA TESTING, LIKE WE CAN TAKE, FOR EXAMPLE, OR THE PSAT TESTING.
THEY GIVE US SCHEDULING LIKE REALLY LATE, SO WE'RE NOT PREPARED.
WE'RE NOT PREPARED BECAUSE THEY GIVE US THE SCHEDULE LIKE WHENEVER WE HAVE WEIRD DAYS, WHETHER IT'S FOR TESTING OR OR SOMETHING ELSE IS GOING ON WHERE WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A WEIRD SCHEDULE AT SCHOOL.
THERE'S LIKE A LACK OF COMMUNICATION.
LIKE THEY NEED TO SHE JUST SAID, LIKE, WE SHOULD GET OUR INFORMATION LIKE QUICKER AND LIKE BETTER BECAUSE WE GET IT SO LATE, SO WE ARE LESS PREPARED AND STUFF FOR THE WEIRD DAYS.
SO WE JUST THINK WE NEED BETTER COMMUNICATION THAT COMES OUT QUICKER AND NOT SO LATE ON WHEN YOU ONLY HAVE, LIKE THREE DAYS TO PREPARE AND INSTEAD GIVING MORE LIKE A FEW WEEKS ADVANCE.
SO THAT'S BASICALLY ALL I HAVE AND THAT I ALSO WANTED TO KNOW I REALLY LIKED FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE PRESENTATION, THE THE MEETING, ALL THE STUDENT ARTWORK.
SORRY, I WAS A BIT LATE TODAY.
THANKFULLY, I WAS ABLE TO CATCH A MAJORITY OF THE PRESENTATION.
FIRST, HONESTLY, THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU GUYS ARE DOING.
WE'RE FINALLY HEADING TOWARDS SOMETHING GOOD WITH THE FIVE TO 11 YEAR OLDS
[01:45:03]
FINALLY BEING ABLE TO BE VACCINATED.I THINK THAT'S A REALLY BIG STEP TOWARDS OUR ACTIONS TOWARDS FIGHTING THE PANDEMIC.
LIKE ALL THE FELLOW BOARD MEMBERS SAID, I THINK COMMUNICATION IS SOMETHING THAT EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT COULD WORK ON BECAUSE I ALSO TALKED TO A LOT OF MY FELLOW CLASSMATES AND THEY WERE JUST EMPHASIZING THE LACK OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE DISTRICT AND THE STUDENTS.
THEY DON'T REALLY FEEL LIKE THEY'RE GETTING ALL THE INFORMATION.
ALTHOUGH YOU GUYS ARE GIVING OUT A LOT FOR COVID AND THAT KIND OF STUFF, FOR EXAMPLE, LIKE BEING IN SENIOR CLASS ASB, IT'S KIND OF HARD TO PLAN EVENTS LIKE RITIKA SAID, BECAUSE WE'RE NOT SURE IF THEY'RE GOING TO HAPPEN OR NOT.
AND IT'S JUST SOMETIMES KIND OF IT CONFUSING ON WHERE TO STEP AHEAD.
AND THEN ANOTHER THING MY FELLOW FRIENDS HAD AN IDEA ON IS THE MASK MANDATE IN THE SCHOOL.
I BELIEVE THAT IT'S IMPORTANT TO KEEP OUR MASKS ON AT SCHOOL TO REDUCE THE TRANSMISSION.
BUT THERE HAS BEEN CASES WHERE ADMINISTRATORS AT OUR SCHOOLS AND THOSE STUDENTS ARE KIND OF LENIENT TOWARDS THEM.
I'VE SEEN A LOT WITHOUT THEIR MASKS IN SCHOOLS AND THEN THE ADMINISTRATORS IN THE HALLWAYS NOT REALLY SAYING ANYTHING.
AND I FEEL LIKE THAT'S KIND OF PUSHING US BACK ON OUR FIGHT AGAINST COVID AND HOPEFULLY WE CAN LOOK THROUGH THAT A LITTLE BIT.
OTHERWISE, I THINK EVERYTHING IS GOING GREAT, SO IT'S JUST GOOD TO BE BACK.
YEAH, I GUESS A COUPLE OF THINGS I LIKE TO SAY, FIRST OF ALL, THANKS TO THE CALENDAR PRESENTATION, THAT'S ABSOLUTELY MY FAVORITE BOARD MEETING OF THE YEAR, AND I'M JUST SO DISAPPOINTED THAT I DON'T GET TO BE THERE AND SEE ALL THE KIDS AND SEE ALL THE ORIGINAL PIECES OF ARTWORK.
BUT THANK YOU SO MUCH TO SARAH FOR SHARING YOUR SHARING YOUR PIECE OF ART.
IT'S PRETTY AMAZING, AND I WISH THE CALENDAR COULD HAVE HAD A PHOTOGRAPH OF BOTH SIDES OF YOUR VASE BECAUSE THAT BACKSIDE IS REALLY BEAUTIFUL WITH ALL THE FLOWERS.
THE OTHER THING I LIKE TO MENTION IS I HAD THE PLEASURE OF GOING TO A LYNWOOD HIGH MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL GIRLS VOLLEYBALL GAME, AND I'VE JUST GOT TO SAY A SHOUT OUT TO BOTH SCHOOLS.
THOSE GIRLS ARE SO PROFESSIONAL AND THEY'RE SO GOOD.
LYNWOOD WON THE FIRST TWO AND THEN MEADOWDALE MANAGED TO SCRAPE, SCRAPE BY AND WIN THE LAST THREE IN A ROW.
SO IT WAS A LONG MATCH, FOR WITH FIVE GAMES AND EVERY GAME WAS SUPER CLOSE AT THE END.
AND THANKS FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT, I REALLY ENJOYED IT.
WELL, YES, THE CALENDAR, I JUST LOVE THAT THROUGH ALL OF THIS, OUR KIDS ARE STILL BEING CREATIVE AND WE'RE STILL FINDING A WAY.
THANK YOU TO THE FOUNDATION FOR HELPING OUT WITH THAT FINANCIALLY.
I'M JUST KIND OF AMAZED THAT IN THIS TIME OF STAFFING CHALLENGES AND EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING ELSE THAT'S GOING ON, WE HAVE TWO MAJOR ACTIONS THAT WE DEALT WITH TONIGHT THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS IN THE DISTRICT, THE DISTRICT STRATEGIC PLAN, AND I.
I AM JUST SO GRATIFIED THAT THAT PEOPLE ARE FINDING THE WAY TO TO CONTINUE AND FURTHERING JUST THE REALLY IMPORTANT WORK OF THIS DISTRICT AND THAT WE'RE NOT GETTING TOTALLY SIDETRACKED BY, YOU KNOW, CONTACT TRACING AND THE OTHER THINGS ABOUT THIS PANDEMIC.
I APPLAUD THE SYSTEM FROM THE TOP ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE PEOPLE IN THE IN THE SCHOOL BUILDINGS.
AND I LOVE THE THOUGHT THAT THAT EVERY SINGLE ADULT IN THE SYSTEM IS GOING TO BE ABLE TO SEE HOW THEY, THE ROLE THEY PLAY IN FURTHERING THE ACHIEVEMENT FOR OUR STUDENTS AND HOW AND HOW, YOU KNOW, IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT JOB THEY HAVE, THEY ARE.
THEY'RE IMPORTANT AND THEY THEY HAVE VALUE IN THE SYSTEM.
SO THAT'S THAT'S REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT.
AND I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU BECAUSE I KEEP THINKING THAT WE'RE WE'RE GETTING TOWARD THE END AND THEN ANOTHER CURVEBALL HITS AND AND PEOPLE ARE ASKED ONCE AGAIN TO GO ABOVE AND BEYOND.
AND I'M JUST GRATEFUL THAT PEOPLE ARE FINDING THE INTERNAL FORTITUDE TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT AND CONTINUE TO PUT KIDS FIRST.
[01:50:02]
DIRECTOR CHASE.AND ECHOING WHAT ANN JUST SAID, DIRECTOR MCMURRAY.
AND ALSO, I'M SUPER EXCITED ABOUT THE LEVY TOO.
YEAH, THE YOU KNOW, AS WE CONTINUE THINKING ABOUT THE WORK GOING FORWARD, YOU KNOW, WE DO HAVE ANNUAL CONFERENCES AND LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEES.
AND SO IT'S REALLY NICE THAT WE'VE GOT A LEGISLATIVE AGENDA THAT WE ACTUALLY ALL LOOKED AT AND THOUGHT ABOUT AND TALKED ABOUT.
AND I REALLY WANT TO DO A SHOUT OUT TO HARMONY AND LYDIA ON THIS.
BALDERAS, BECAUSE WITHOUT THEIR ADVOCACY AND WORK ON THIS, WE WOULDN'T HAVE IT.
WE WOULD NOT BE NEARLY AS FAR AS WE ARE RIGHT NOW.
YOU KNOW, AS KIND OF BUILDING ON THE THEME OF BELONGING, YOU KNOW, SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT ALSO IS GATHERING AS A BELONGING IN OUR COUNTY.
I'M THINKING ABOUT DOING SOME FURTHER COLLABORATION WITH THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN OUR AREA SO THAT WE CAN BUILD ON THESE RELATIONSHIPS AND HAVE A STRONGER SENSE OF BELONGING, NOT ONLY FROM THE BOARD LEVEL DOWN FROM THE COUNTY LEVEL ON DOWN.
SO, YOU KNOW, I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SOME OF THIS WORK AS WE GO FORWARD AND I'LL JUST END THERE AND LOOK FORWARD TO ALL GOOD THINGS COMING FORWARD.
DIRECTOR KATIMS. SO I ECHO WHAT EVERY ALL OF MY PEERS AND COLLEAGUES SAID.
I ALSO, I WANT TO THANK THE STUDENT ADVISORS TONIGHT.
YOU GAVE US SOME VERY SPECIFIC FEEDBACK, WHICH IS REALLY IMPORTANT FOR US TO HAVE VERY SPECIFIC FEEDBACK FROM STUDENTS AND THINGS THAT ARE ACTIONABLE THAT OUR STAFF CAN, CAN ADDRESS AND HOPEFULLY HELP IMPROVE IN THOSE AREAS THAT YOU BROUGHT UP TO US.
SO I REALLY WANT TO THANK YOU FOR THAT KIND OF SPECIFICITY AND BRINGING US THAT INPUT.
I ALSO ON LOOKING AT EVERYTHING I THINK WE DID FOUR REALLY IMPORTANT THINGS TONIGHT THAT REALLY REPRESENT WHAT THE ROLE OF THE BOARD IS, THE STRATEGIC PLAN AND THE SIPS AS TWO OF THEM THAT REALLY SET THE BLUEPRINTS FOR WHAT MATTERS MOST, WHICH IS OUR KIDS LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES, ACCESS TO THE BEST OPPORTUNITIES THAT THEY CAN HAVE AND MAKING SURE THAT WE CONTINUALLY IMPROVE TO HELP MEET THOSE NEEDS.
THE LEVY TO PROVIDE FINANCIAL STABILITY FOR THE DISTRICT, WHICH IS KEY TO BEING ABLE TO MEET ALL OF THE THINGS WITHIN THE STRATEGIC PLAN AND THE SIPS AND THE LEGISLATIVE PLATFORM FOR US TO AS OUR ADVOCACY FOR HOW TO HELP BRING THE KINDS OF EXTRA SUPPORT FROM THE OUTSIDE THAT WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO DO OUR JOBS BETTER.
SO FOR THE FIRST TIME, I FEEL LIKE SINCE THE PANDEMIC STARTED, I FEEL LIKE I SEE THIS LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL OF JUST REFLECTED IN THESE FOUR REALLY MAJOR THINGS WE DID ON THE AGENDA TONIGHT THAT ARE MOVING US BACK INTO THE MAIN AND IMPORTANT AND VALUABLE WORK OF THE DISTRICT AND HOPEFULLY WHICH IS NOT IN ANY WAY MINIMIZING AMAZING WORK GOING ON TO TAKE CARE OF ALL OF THE PANDEMIC.
THAT IS RELATED ISSUES THAT CONTINUE.
BUT THIS SEEMS TO SHOW SORT OF A LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL AND BRINGS HOPE THAT WE'RE GETTING BACK TO THE THE REAL WORK OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
YES, AS EVERYONE SAID, I'M JUST SO PLEASED WITH THE DIRECTION THAT WE'RE GOING AND IN PARTICULAR, THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN REALLY FEELS LIKE HOPE TO ME TO SEE US MOVING FORWARD AND AND DOING PRODUCTIVE WORK EVEN ON UNDER THESE DIFFICULT CONDITIONS.
HARMONY, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BRINGING THE VIDEO OF THE KIDS SINGING THAT JUST THESE KINDS OF THINGS JUST YANK AT ME.
THE [INAUDIBLE] ON OUR TEAM DID THAT VIDEO SO I WANT TO GIVE HER A SHOUT OUT.
AND AGAIN, ANOTHER ANOTHER SIGN OF HOPE FOR OUR DISTRICT AND OTHERWISE WE DID HAVE AN ELECTION.
NOBODY RAN AGAINST ME, SO IT WAS EASY.
BUT ANYWAY, I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO, YOU KNOW, WORKING WITH NEW COLLEAGUES
[01:55:04]
AND OLD AS WE MOVE ON.I LIKE DEMOCRACY, AND SO I'M ALWAYS EXCITED AROUND ELECTIONS AND DR.
I WILL TURN IT OVER TO YOU FOR THE LAST WORD.
I APPRECIATE THE COMMENTS FROM THE FROM THE BOARD AND ALSO OUR STUDENT ADVISORS.
AND I THINK WHAT WE NEED TO DO IS CONTINUE TO TO REALLY WORK ON PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS IN TERMS OF OUR CURRENT SCENARIO THAT WE CURRENTLY ARE STILL FACING.
WE'RE STILL OVER 300 CASES PER 100000 AND MAKING SURE THAT WE COMMUNICATE BETTER TO SCHOOL LEADERS AND THOSE IN ADVISORY POSITIONS THAT ARE ADULTS REGARDING THE PARAMETERS TO WHAT'S ALLOWABLE RIGHT NOW, THAT THINGS THAT.
AND AGAIN, SO I APPRECIATE THE THE STUDENTS BRING THAT UP BECAUSE THAT IS ALWAYS, I KNOW I TOLD THIS BOARD AND OTHERS IS WE CAN ALWAYS DO A BETTER JOB AT COMMUNICATING.
WE CAN ALWAYS WE CAN NEVER COMMUNICATE ENOUGH, SO NOT COMMUNICATE ENOUGH.
SO WE'LL CONTINUE TO WORK ON THAT.
SO BUT I REALLY APPRECIATE THE COMMENTS FROM THE STUDENT ADVISORS TODAY.
ALSO, AS THE BOARD DOES KNOW THAT WE'VE DELAYED SOME OF THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THAT'S REQUIRED.
AND AND ALSO TO PUT A PAUSE ON SOME OF THE ADOPTIONS FOR NOW, BECAUSE OF THE WORKING WITH OUR EEA PARTNERS IS WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE.
WE CONTINUE TO MEET ALMOST WEEKLY RIGHT NOW AND TO TALK ABOUT WHAT ARE THE THINGS THAT WE CAN DO TO NOT OVERLY STRAIN AN ALREADY STRAINED SYSTEM.
SO AND WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO WORK TOWARDS THAT.
AND I APPRECIATE RITIKA'S COMMENT ABOUT THE LITTLE THINGS BECAUSE IT REALLY IS.
WE NEED TO TAKE CARE OF THOSE LITTLE THINGS BECAUSE THOSE LITTLE THINGS MATTER AND ENSURING THAT WE'RE DOING EVERYTHING WE CAN.
AND I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT COMMENT BECAUSE IT REALLY STARTS OFF WITH HOW WE CAN BETTER COMMUNICATE TO OUR KIDS AT ALL LEVELS, PARTICULARLY THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL, IN TERMS OF JUST PARAMETERS.
SO THAT AGAIN, OUR GOAL IS TO KEEP KIDS SAFE.
I MEAN, WE HAD A I JUST WE HAD A FUNCTION AT ONE OF OUR HIGH SCHOOLS OVER HALLOWEEN WEEKEND AND BECAUSE OF THAT FUNCTION, SIXTY KIDS SIXTY KIDS OR CLOSE CONTACTS WERE HAD TO BE QUARANTINED.
SO THAT'S WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO PREVENT.
THAT'S WHAT WE TRY AND PREVENT.
BECAUSE AGAIN, I'VE WORKED AT ALL THREE LEVELS, BEEN AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL AS WELL, AND WE CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH AS GROWNUPS.
BUT THE PSAS WE CAN DO, WE'LL CONTINUE TO WORK ON MAKING SURE WE HAVE PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS TO OUR STUDENTS IN TERMS OF WHAT TO DO AND ALSO TRULY APPRECIATE DANIEL'S COMMENTS REGARDING ENFORCEMENT OF THE RULES.
WE CANNOT GET A LAX RIGHT NOW.
WE STILL WE'RE STILL IN THIS REMINDER THAT AT ONE POINT IN TIME LAST YEAR, IT WAS SEVENTY FIVE PER HUNDRED THOUSAND.
ANYTHING ABOVE THAT WE COULDN'T COME BACK IN PERSON.
I JUST REMEMBER THAT THE FLOWCHART WE HAD, IT WAS 75.
WE'RE ABOUT 340 OR SO, PER HUNDRED THOUSAND.
SO I THINK WE WE LOSE TRACK OF THAT BECAUSE ALL OF US ON A SCREEN OR, YOU KNOW, HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE VACCINATED.
SO I'M VERY HOPEFUL AS WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO TO PRESS FOR ADDITIONAL VACCINES.
BUT AS THE BOARD HAS STATED, WE DO SEE THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL AND WE'RE WORKING TOWARDS THAT AND WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO TO DO EVERYTHING WE CAN TO MAKE IT AS NORMAL AS POSSIBLE, HOPEFULLY BY THE END OF THE YEAR OR AT LEAST SECOND SEMESTER.
SO THAT'S OUR THAT'S OUR HOPE.
SO THANK YOU BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR YOUR COMMITMENT AND TRULY WANT TO APPRECIATE THE STAFF THAT ARE ON THE CALL.
WELL, BECAUSE AGAIN, IT'S THE WORK THAT THE BOARD HAS THAT APPROVAL OF TONIGHT, THAT IS YEARS OF WORK, BUT THOSE ARE A LOT OF MAN.
THOSE ARE A LOT AGAIN GOING TO RITIKA SAID.
THOSE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE HOURS.
THOSE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE HOURS BECAUSE WE GOT TO USE GENDER NEUTRAL TERMINOLOGY.
THOSE ARE THOSE ARE PEOPLE HOURS THAT A LOT OF A LOT OF PEOPLE PUT TIME AND EFFORT INTO THAT TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS, OUR STRATEGIC PLAN, AND THAT INCLUDES OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS.
LOOK FORWARD TO THE WORK AHEAD AND WELL.
I WILL FOLLOW UP WITH STUDENT COMMENTS WITH STAFF TO ENSURE THAT WE GET COMMUNICATION OUT TO PRINCIPALS.
MEETING ADJOURNED.
